Quick Enquiry

“You look around the market today and I would say that 95 per cent of yachts from 40 to 140 feet have copied Genie of the Lamp. That kind of layout, that kind of style and deck, it’s clear. I don’t think it’s too much to say that Genie has influenced the last 20 years.” - "Today, everyone has ‘invented’ the vertical bow. We didn’t invent it, it was invented in the 19th century, even before that, but when we introduced it in 2003, everyone was against it. Even the naval architects, they were saying, ‘no, this boat will have big problems’. And now everyone understands that there are a lot of advantages in having a vertical bow. And everyone is claiming they invented it!” - Luca Bassani, founder and president of Wally

ESENSE // Wally

Esense is a 43m high-performance sloop built in 2006 by wally ..

Esense has a radical design. Wally typical: No deck house appears on her flush deck and only the bare necessities. That makes her the biggest keel jolly-boat in the world. In German, we would say: Die wohl größte Kieljolle der Welt.

Her exterior lines were designed by Wally in-house by the visionary founder Luca Bassani. The naval architecture work was done by Tripp Design . Her Hall Spars rig carries a sail area of 836 m².

Deep-sea dinghy: "Esense"

This yacht takes your breath away. She lies there like a rocket emerging at an angle from the water, shimmering grey-blue, mysterious, with the typical Wally bow thrust forward. The deck is wide, a centre cockpit dug in like a sandy hollow. The mast base is surrounded by huge winches. On the port and starboard ends of the deck, which is covered with long teak poles, the designers have placed two solitary helm stations, with an equally lost console between them, reminiscent of a keyboard on spindly legs. Otherwise: emptiness. Wally emptiness. Of course, the stepped terrace deck, which has long been part of the Wally standard, is not missing, as are the dark smoked glass windows looking out over the terrace onto the wake. Invented back then for "Tiketitan". The extremely wide bulwark only appears new at first glance because it was copied from old schooners. It surrounds the entire deck, turning it into a gigantic cockpit. It increases the freeboard by almost 90 centimetres and is probably also good for the dimensional stability of the hull. It leaves the stern open.

When casting off, the crew show why the deck is so conspicuously empty. Equipment for mooring, hoisting sails, trimming and everything else needed for enjoyable sailing disappears behind flaps in the bulwark. This is 60 centimetres deep. This is where the shipyard installed the bollards, the air intake for the air conditioning system, the engine compartment fans and the forecastle boxes. And this is where they installed Magic Trim, hydraulic rams for hauling the sheets and adjusting the rigging.

"Esense" in action: 900 square metres of sailcloth allow it to reach 15 knots even in light winds. | n.

The sea is like lead, we motor into more open water. And we stretch our legs: no problem doing jogging laps, because the deck is gigantic. We don't feel the engine. It operates quietly and vibration-free in the well-insulated engine compartment. Its exhaust gas is discharged under water.

Enough time to look around: At the height of the steering wheels, we discover the hydraulics behind flaps. "Trimming sails using winches," says Wally inventor Luca Bassani, "is backward and slow." Instead, Italian manufacturer Cariboni provides us with its flexible Magic Trim tackle, whose opposing rollers are pushed apart by a hydraulic ram, thus shortening the furling section extremely quickly. "'Esense' hauls and furls its sheets within seconds," says Bassani, "sensitively controlled via proportional joysticks: a light tap for slow trimming, a firm push for fast hauling and furling. All from the helm stations."

It's hard to think of a 143-foot mega yacht as minimalist, but the Wally Esense has taken that exact approach. The Esense isn't nearly as extravagant or flashy as some of the other superyachts we've posted, but it presents its beauty through a clean wooden deck, simple pool area, and white, airy cabin. We wouldn't mind sailing across the ocean in one of these.

On board Wally's latest flagship Better Place

Anyone who knows Luca Bassani Antivar i knows he sees the world a bit differently from most who make their living in the yacht business. Ever since he burst on the scene with his 32 metre Luca Brenta -designed Wallygator in 1994, it has seemed that he believes his job is to change the status quo and erase perceived limitations, as he good-naturedly prods and pulls yachting along with him.

A sailor for 40 years, he nevertheless appreciates that there are applications for powerboats. His 36 metre WallyPower in 2003 turned sport yachts on their collective head, and it was followed by WallyTender and Wally Lunch Boat . He showed his mastery of carbon fibre with WallySki . This summer, Bassani performed a hat trick when Wally delivered the first of a new class of racer-cruiser, WallyCento ; Kanga , the first yacht from Wally’s first displacement line, WallyAce ; and the first big cruising Wally, the company’s flagship at 50.5 metres, Better Place .

Surprisingly, the owner of Better Place did not come from within the ranks of the Wally sailing fleet. ‘The owner was a powerboat guy,’ says Bassani. ‘Some of our most advanced boats are built for powerboat owners.’

Advanced it is. Better Place is Wally’s first diesel-electric sailing yacht and powered via a standard shaft and feathering prop. With all three Caterpillar C7 gensets in operation, the yacht runs at 14.5 knots through a Siemens electric engine. Dial back to one generator and it still achieves 9.5 to 10 knots.

But was Better Place designed as a motor sailer? ‘We took the stupid out of the motor sailer type; the hull is a real torpedo,’ says Bassani. ‘It’s a Wally from any point of view. It’s light at 250 tonnes displacement, or about half that of a 50 metre yacht of this type. You don’t have to wait for the wind to blow 20 knots to start having fun and stop at 25.’

The torpedo part of the equation is apparent with one glance at the velocity prediction program (VPP): Better Place sails at 14 knots upwind and 17 reaching. She’s also stiff – her keel alone is heavier than Wally’s maxi Indio . Better Place is among the new breed of yachts this size completely built in advanced composites, as requested by the owner to ensure scale and comfort are balanced with performance. She draws 4.5 metres with the keel up and 6.5 metres with the keel down.

On deck, she bears a resemblance to the 2006 launch Esense , a 43.7 metre with high freeboard, and halfway along the aft main deck, windows that drop from deck level to a lower level – creating a step down to the ‘terrace on the sea’ (a semi-private aft deck for the owner, a typical feature on Wallys). Also like Esense , a high freeboard wraps around to become both coaming and bulwark, providing more protection for those on deck than a typical toe rail and a safe place to run sheets and fairleads. But that is where the similarity ends.

Better Place sports a conservatory-style deckhouse, with an on-deck wheelhouse and a living area of more than 86 square metres, which flows on to the main deck fore, aft, port and starboard from a seemingly endless array of doors and full-height windows. It provides a 360-degree view from any position. Recessed into the top of this structure is a flybridge, a first for Wally, with twin wheels forward and an expansive lounging and dining area. As with Esense and 45 metre Saudade launched in 2008, which has a deckhouse but no flybridge, Better Place’s naval architecture is by Bill Tripp, of Tripp Design.

‘We started designing this project in 2003,’ says Tripp. ‘Originally, it was to be an aluminium boat, a version of Esense with a WallyPower superstructure on top. You can see how much it developed from that first concept.’

Tripp designed the boat in an aluminium and carbon fibre version, working out the weights, balances and loads for each. The aluminium version would have weighed 310 tonnes lightship, whereas the carbon fibre version was predicted to be 265 tonnes, plus the 11.5 tonnes of mast, rigging and sails. ‘In the beginning, the market had a fear factor about 50 metres in carbon,’ says Tripp. ‘But as boats like Esense and Saudade performed without incident, it was clear risks were low. The first time we put her into the wind, she did 10 knots in 12 knots of breeze, then 12 knots in 14. What did surprise everyone was how fast she accelerated.’

The saloon, dining area and wheelhouse form one continuous area and its furniture can be reconfigured for various uses with the same facility as a Transformers toy is changed from a robot to a vehicle. A sophisticated lighting plan delineates areas and supports various tasks. Exterior seating and dining areas forward, aft and on top of the deckhouse eliminate any of the conflicts that could be associated with open-plan living.

The saloon, for example, seats 20 people as a lounge, opening fully on to the covered portion of the aft deck with even more seating. The central coffee table can be converted into a dining table for small groups of up to eight, or to augment the specific dining area for 10 forward. This dining area is also multifunctional, configuring as a lounge with a six-person sofa for watching the sailing if the weather is inclement.

When the yacht is moored, at anchor or in light air, the foredeck social area (about 43 square metres) is an excellent social space. It is accessible from the interior dining area and features table seating and sunpads for 20 people. Beyond, the forward 84 square metre expanse of teak deck hides a sunken spa pool. Winches, windlasses and two tenders are hidden under hatches as well.

With the lounging and dining space on the main deck, the terrace on the sea space was available for the owner’s bedroom in his 62 square metre suite. This suite is where the yacht’s 10.25 metre beam is used to its greatest effect. With mirrored windows across the aft bulkhead, a strip of glass in the overhead and a pair of 1.8 metre by 0.9 metre windows in the hull sides, the space is bathed with sunlight by day. At night it is lit with indirect LEDs with alterable colour settings.

A centreline corridor divides the sleeping and lounging areas of the master cabin and the dressing area from the head. A king-size bed to starboard faces aft while a modular television lounge of nearly equal size faces forward, adjacent to a desk area. The entrance to the suite is a gallery of sorts, with recessed niches for objets d’art in the white lacquered oak panelling and coloured lighting. Aft, the owner’s suite has direct access to the terrace on the sea.

Up to 10 guests can be accommodated on board Better Place in four double cabins and 10 crew in five double cabins. The guest cabins are split fore and aft of the double engine rooms and the trunk for the lifting keel. A series of doors divide the captain’s cabin and galley, mess and crew cabins from the guest areas forward.

The sundeck/flybridge, measuring more than 90 square metres, can be reached either by a staircase from the dining area or by an outside staircase from the main deck aft. Up top, tucked behind the vang and under the furling boom, is a forward wraparound seating area facing the twin wheels and sail control consoles.

A unique environmental characteristic of Better Place is her RINA Green Star certification, and she received RINA’s award for Most Environmentally Conscious sailing yacht at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2012. Her diesel-electric propulsion reflects the latest Siemens technology and offers the power to covert some typically hydraulic ships services to electric, such as the inner stay furler and the sheet tensioning devices.

‘As soon as we had the boat set up and sailing,’ says Tripp, ‘the owner asked if he could have it for a weekend to sail to Montenegro. It wasn’t totally finished but Luca said he could sail it for a few days. The owner didn’t bring it back for a couple of months; he even cruised to Sicily and Sardinia. That was pretty amazing. I guess it means he likes the boat.’

Sailing yacht Esense of Wally the older brother of Tango.

Esense, is a high performance cruising yacht that has definitively decreed the affirmation and validity of the simplified esthetics used by wally to create innovative, modern, elegant and unmistakable exteriors of its yachts., in truth, the wally esthetics was born initially to hide all the maneuvering devices on deck that can be dangerous especially if there are children among the guests that’s why the bridges of wally boats are free dishes aesthetically beautiful to see., over the years, wally has continued with its innovations, experimenting with new forms and functions, never neglecting the overall aesthetic beauty of the structure of its yachts., luca bassani, creator, founder and president of wally built esense tailored to achieve a private dream. the yacht is 43, 70 meters long was launched in 2006 but still today is one of the most exceptional sailing boats that sail our seas., unmistakable for its graceful modern and elegant lines a 143-foot sloop that can be managed by a very limited number of crew., the blanket that, as luca bassani says, “is the great novelty of this boat” has a huge space, the teak deck completely satin and free from everything there are no wells, no accessories and not even a sight-mounted chute for the helms an immense flush deck., in place of the side rail, the deck is surrounded by a particular 60-80 cm high battened area, like the large sailing ships of yesteryear and inside it runs all the maneuvers of the yacht. in view on deck we find only the twin steering wheels on the rear deck with a dashboard in the middle, where all the navigation control displays are embedded and closed and 4 robust winches under the mast., even if the esense bridge re-introduces the bulwarks of the old sailing ships, the technology is that wally’s advance with the ever present self-tacking jib and the magic trim automated system that manages all the navigation maneuvers., on the deck almost at the center of the boat between the skylight and the tree outside the maneuvering area a teak protected table is installed for 12 people with a wrapping sofa to enjoy life on board the open area and to socialize with guests , covered with two concealed bimini which, if necessary, provide the necessary shading., the hull was made entirely of carbon so the tree and this is nothing new considering that wally is known for being one of the first to adopt carbon fiber as a material for yachts., we remember wallygator which in 1991 was the first cruise yacht in the world to have a carbon mast. “seventeen tons of carbon for the hull alone, we are the biggest carbon consumers in italy …” bassani commented during the construction of the boat., among the main features of this yacht is certainly the presence of a terrace overlooking the sea at the stern with access through two side stairs that lead from the main deck on this huge platform below teak of 21 square meters that in addition to being very nice to to see is functional in fact it is used to facilitate the boarding of guests in the moorings or as a large sunbathing area as well as being the access to the main hall with its beautiful window., the downstairs descent is via a staircase that is accessed by an inn located at the stern of the mast while the second entrance is from the stern terrace through the main hall., wally conceived and developed the project, while for the water lines he asked for the collaboration of the famous designer bill tripp, founder of tripp design naval, where engineers and architects specialize in the design of yachts with exceptional performances. “my boats have to fly on water, do not sink”, is the basic principle of bill tripp., the performance of esense is exceptional, with a weak wind of about 8 knots, manages to reach 11 knots. the 57-meter carbon mast is equipped with a 17-meter boom. the sailing surface of the most stabled mainsail is 900 square meters. . the retractable keel of 48 tons allows you to adjust the draft from 6 to 4 meters., “it was a real pleasure to create something unique” commented bill trip after the works “we believe that esense is an extraordinary yacht from all points of view”, the interior design instead is the work of a famous french architect odile decq, who also designed the museum of contemporary art in rome (macro), this project was his first experience in the construction of yachts., upon specific request of the owner apart from the kitchen amidships and the owner’s suite in the bow of the mast consists of a cabin with double bed with bathroom with tub with adjoining music room and the area reserved for accommodation for 6 crew members , which is located immediately after the owner’s suite, all the interiors are modular, so that guests’ bedrooms cabins can be transformed and become part of the living area of the stern and vice versa, thanks to the versatility and compatibility of the environments designed by odile decq with a style of the early ’70s, a trend that is also developing in the latest luxury motor yachts., the areas can be joined or separated by means of bulkheads or sliding doors creating environments as you want, living life on board, also depending on the guests present at that time. with this flexibility in the salon you can create up to two guest cabins and another in the middle of the boat. in total, aboard esense there is space to accommodate six guests in three cabins each with its own bathroom over the couple of owners in their suite., below deck the natural light arrives through the windows located along the perimeter of the bridge: “i wanted that below the light came oblique,” says odile decq, who designed the rooms by modulating spaces and light starting from the large aft salon with the window that gives on the terrace., the lighting system was designed in such a way that at night the direct and reflected light highlight the shapes of the hull with a truly spectacular result., the propulsion of the yacht is always guaranteed for the presence in the engine room of a 550 hp caterpillar engine that ensures a cruising speed of 12 knots and a maximum of 14 with a huge autonomy that can cross the atlantic., this boat that for some opinion of the sector would represent one of the most successful sailing boats of all time a real work of art on the sea, among other things, manageable by a few nice crew units inside and out, chosen to turn entirely the last summer film by leonardo guerranse, surely represents a reference boat for designers and shipyards of the sector also of the same brand wally., bassani himself asserts that the tango sailing yacht, the fourth in the wally 100 series launched in 2017, was awarded with the honorable mention at the compasso d’oro adi award 2018 was born from the idea developed on esense a flush deck boat with a classic curved boat and history of a time with the smooth blanket that taught us to understand what is the beauty of a boat. clearly, beauty or design is not enough to first take care of functionality, safety, comfort and maneuverability. about this, luca bassani antivari comments:, “ we will always keep our soul as a company that always brings something new and functional to the market. we never consider adventure, the experience of finished design. “, main technical characteristics.

Questions for Investigators Trying to Unravel Mystery of Luxury Yacht’s Sinking

The investigators searching for answers about the shipwreck, leaving seven dead, face questions about extreme weather and possible human error or problems with the yacht itself.

  • Share full article

Two small boats with outboard motors make their way across the water.

By Alan Yuhas

More than 180 feet long, with a mast towering about 240 feet and a keel that could be lowered for greater stability, the Bayesian luxury yacht did not, in the eyes of its maker, have the vulnerabilities of a ship that would easily sink.

“It drives me insane,” Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company that made the ship, said after its wreck last week. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

But the $40 million sailing yacht sank within minutes and with fatal results: seven dead, including the British technology billionaire Michael Lynch, his teenage daughter, four of Mr. Lynch’s friends and a member of the crew. Fifteen people, including the captain, escaped on a lifeboat.

Mr. Lynch had invited family, friends and part of his legal team on a cruise in the Mediterranean to celebrate his acquittal in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

The Italian authorities have opened a manslaughter investigation, searching for answers from the survivors, the manufacturer and the wreck itself. They face a range of questions and possible factors.

An ‘earthquake’ in the sky?

When the Bayesian sank around 4 a.m. on Aug. 19, the waters in its area, about half a mile off the Sicilian port of Porticello, were transformed by an extremely sudden and violent storm, according to fishermen, a captain in the area and meteorologists.

But what kind of storm is still a mystery, compounded by the fact that a sailing schooner anchored nearby did not have its own disaster. Also unclear is whether the crew was aware that the Italian authorities had issued general warnings about bad weather the night before.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby passenger ship, said he’d had to steady his ship during “really violent” winds . During the storm, he said, the Bayesian seemed to disappear behind his ship.

Severe lightning and strong gusts were registered by the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, according to Attilio Di Diodato, its director. “It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said.

The yacht, he said, had most likely been hit by a fierce downburst — a blast of powerful wind surging down during a thunderstorm. His agency put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about possible storms.

Locals have said the winds “felt like an earthquake.” A fisherman in Porticello said that he had seen a flare go off in the early-morning hours. His brother ventured to the site once the weather had calmed about 20 minutes later, he said, finding only floating cushions.

The Italian authorities have so far declined to say whether investigators had seen any structural damage to the hull or other parts of the ship.

Open hatches or doors?

The boat executive, Mr. Costantino, has argued that the Bayesian was an extremely safe vessel that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing. His company, the Italian Sea Group, in 2022 bought the yacht’s manufacturer, Perini Navi, which launched the ship in 2008.

Mr. Costantino said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, would be to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

At a news conference on Saturday, almost a week after the sinking, investigators said the yacht had sunk at an angle , with its stern — where the heavy engine was — having gone down first. The wreck was found lying on its right side at the bottom of a bay, about 165 feet deep.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Water pouring into open hatches or doors could have contributed to the sinking, experts say, but that on its own may not account for the speed at which such a large boat vanished underwater.

Asked about the hatches at the news conference, the authorities declined to comment on whether they had been found open at the wreck.

The authorities have also not specified whether the boat had been anchored, whether it was under power at the time or whether its sails had been unfurled.

A retracted keel?

The Bayesian had a keel — the fin-like structure beneath a boat that can help stabilize it — that could be retracted or extended, according to its manufacturer. On some yachts, keels can be raised to let the large vessel dock in shallower water, and extended downward to help keep a boat level.

But like the hatches, the status of the keel alone may not explain why a large ship sank with such precipitous speed. Investigators have not disclosed what divers may have seen at the wreck, aside from saying divers had faced obstacles like furnishings and electrical wiring in tight quarters. Officials want to raise the wreck to better examine it, a process that may take weeks.

Human error?

Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor in charge of the case, said at the news conference that it was “plausible” crimes had been committed, but that investigators had not zeroed in on any potential suspects.

“There could be responsibilities of the captain only,” he said. “There could be responsibilities of the whole crew. There could be responsibilities of the boat makers. Or there could be responsibilities of those who were in charge of surveilling the boat.”

It remains unclear what kind of emergency training or preparation took place before the disaster, or what kind of coordination there was during it. So far, none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened the night the ship sank.

Prosecutors said they want to ask more questions of the captain and crew, who have been in a Sicilian hotel with other survivors. They said that neither alcohol nor drug tests had been performed on crew members, and that they have been allowed to leave Italy.

Prosecutors also said they were also investigating why the captain, an experienced sailor, left the sinking boat while some passengers were still on board.

Besides possible manslaughter charges, the authorities are investigating the possibility of a negligently caused shipwreck.

The bodies of five passengers were found in one cabin, on the left side of the yacht, the authorities said. The five were most likely trying to flee to the higher side of the boat and were probably sleeping when the boat started to sink, they said.

Manslaughter Probe Launched After Bayesian Yacht Sinking Kills British Entrepreneur, Morgan Stanley Chief

Italian authorities have launched a manslaughter investigation into the captain of the luxury Bayesian sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last week in a wreck that killed seven people, including Britsh tech entrepreneur Michael Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, and Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer.

Italian Coast Guards take part in searches of missing off Porticello near Palermo, on Aug. 21, 2024.

Italian prosecutors will investigate James Cutfield, the captain of the Bayesian, for manslaughter after the ship sank in rough weather overnight on Aug. 18, multiple outlets reported Monday.

The investigation will look into if the crew of the ship appropriately handled the storm that hit the yacht before it capsized, if passengers were warned of imminent danger and if hatches on the ship were left ajar, which would have contributed to its quick sinking.

As part of the probe, the ship will be raised from the waters in which it sank later this year, CNN reported , at the cost of registered owner Angela Bacares, the wife and mother, respectively, of victims Michael and Hannah Lynch.

The Bayesian, named for a mathematical theory, is currently about 50 meters (164 feet) below the surface near the port of Porticello in Sicily, Italy, and sank less than a minute after it capsized.

Officials have said the passengers who died—Michael and Hannah Lynch, Jonathan and Judy Bloomer and Chris and Neda Morvillo—were likely asleep at the time of the sinking.

Notices of investigations into an incident must be issued in Italy before autopsies can be done on victims, Reuters reported , and the opening of a probe does not necessarily mean formal charges will follow.

Key Background

The Bayesian is a 184-foot luxury sailing yacht with a 246-foot aluminum mast—the tallest of its kind in the world. It is legally owned by Bacares and her late husband "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a staff member told The Times of London. The Lynch/Bacares family was on board with seven guests and the boat was anchored when a storm hit overnight on Sunday, Aug. 18. The harsh weather included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water, that caused the vessel to top over and it was then quickly dragged underwater. Of the 10 passengers, six died in the capsizing and their bodies were recovered last week. There were also 12 crew members on board and one, Recaldo Thomas, also died. Among those resued were Bacares; Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Lynch's Invoke Capital, along with her partner and her baby daughter; lawyer Ayla Ronald and her partner.

Lynch, Bloomer and Morvillo were all involved in a massive fraud trial that saw Hewlett-Packard accuse Lynch and others of artificially inflating the value of his software company, Autonomy, before HP purchased it in 2011. Lynch was indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale but was acquitted alongside his co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain, who was killed in a car crash in the U.K. the same weekend the Bayesian sank in Italy. Bloomer testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial, according to the Associated Press , and Morvillo was one of the lawyers on the case.
