FRAME & DECK

The MiniCat 420 frame, to which the floats attach, is produced from light-weight aluminium and the frame parts are powder coated. The trampoline is produced from high strength woven plastic fabric. The frame is attached to the floats by means of welded-on ‘flags’, which are inserted into the pockets on the floats.

The MiniCat 420 is equipped with two inflatable floats 4.2m length and 45 cm diameters. The floats are made of reinforced Heytex 5509, highly resistant to abrasion and very hard wearing. This material and production technology was adopted from the production of ‘white-water’ rafts. The floats are single-chamber with a combined load capacity of 530 kg.

To fully enjoy your sailing you must confidently control your boat. It is imperative to minimize ‘side-sail’, especially when sailing against the wind. To achieve this keel fins were designed to attach under each float. Their design and shape gives excellent performance yet still allows the boat to be sailed in very shallow water without the risk of damage.

The mast consists of three sections of equal length, slotted together. The length of the assembled mast is 5.05 m. The mast is from alloy tubing and has a groove for the sail attachment. This construction ensures high rigidity and strength for ultimate safety, performance and enjoyment.

The MiniCat 420 is equipped with a main sail and a jib. The total area of the sails is 9.7 sqm (main sail 6.5 sqm, jib 3.2 sqm). The material ‘Dimension Polyant’ is used with a surface density of 175 – 240 g/m. The mail sail of the 420 Emotion and Evoque is made of a transparent Sport MonoFilm. Both the main sail and the jib have transparent windows to ensure better visibility and security while sailing.

MiniCat 420 is fitted with one rudder in the craft centreline, attached to the frame. The automatic cleat will unlock the rudder rope in case the boat runs aground, thus protecting it from damage. The design of the rudder allows it to be raised at a 90 degree angle, so at the shore or in very shallow water there is no danger of damage. The rudder can be locked in both positions, raised or lowered. The tiller arm is jointed allowing full 360 degree movement. The rudder on 420 Instinct and Emotion is made of aluminium, on 420 Evoque, 420 Laura Dekker and 420 15th Anniversary is made of Carbon Fibre.

Boat: Hunter 45DS	. Our motors would not generate more than 4 knots and that speed would not last for more than a hour. While under full sail and with 12 knots of off the beam, when a 28 passed us, I knew this was not the for us. We never sailed at more that 4.5 knots, even with a licensed at the . Hopefully they have made some improvements but be very careful if you expect more from this cat than a comfortable place to spend the night.

Much easier (and cheaper) engine maintenance (one easily accessible generator rather than two cramped diesel propulsion engines and a generator).
Much quieter, particularly in the aft cabins (and cooler and no diesel smells in the cabins or bilges), because you dont have a thumping great diesel inches away under your bed .
Much more economical (a single 32.8 hp Kubota using 6.5 l/hr 1.7 gals/hr at full load vs twin 40hp Yanmars using 8.2 l/hr 2.2 gals/hr at full power each ).
Much greater manoeuvrability and control owing to the tremendous grip on the water provided by the bigger propellers and instant torque from the electric motors and, since the G2 Upgrade, the minute variability in the power you can apply through the continuously variable throttles.
Less vibration.
More under-bed storage space.
An abundance of available electrical power from the powerful generator and the huge bank of batteries .
Generates significant amounts of renewable energy by the motors acting as generators when under sail (but this does slow you down and so isnt as useful as you would think).
Ideal for connecting renewable energy devices such as PV panels and wind generator (my preferred option), because of the big battery bank.
Lower top speed. I think that you can probably expect up to one knot higher sustained top speed from the twin conventional diesel version, although, since the G2 Upgrade, the hybrid comes close to that speed for an hour or two, by utilising the battery power in addition to generator power. However, the 420 hull has been designed for the hybrid, not for diesel; the stern has been barrelled out below the water line to give increased buoyancy and so take the weight of the batteries . This is a compromise that makes the hull form less than ideal for conventional diesel. As a result, the diesel version will have more buoyancy in the stern than necessary. I'm not sure how this affects performance and ride comfort, but I guess these will be sub-optimum.
You lose the redundancy of having two engines. However, you do have the back up of the power that you have in the huge battery bank, should your generator fail.
The fragility of electric components in a marine environment . However, we have had no component failure in one year of continuous use.
The difficulty of obtaining support and replacement components in far-flung places. However, the motors are bullet-proof industrial motors that should outlast the boat . The hybrid power management is all solid-state which can easily be removed and replaced by flown-in replacements . The lead-acid batteries are available anywhere. The generator is an Onan/Cummins with a huge international support network .
Control of the hybrid systems is more complex than traditional diesel and takes a bit of getting used to.
The big 17.5kVA generator (50Hz model) is too big for economical house power. However, with the huge battery bank and by planning your energy use (AC electric cooking , AC water-making, AC automatic washing machine etc) to coincide with battery charging means you don't have to run it very often

	of the Atlantic Ocean! I bet it must feel pretty strange for all the to be ashore after so long an adventure. Sorry to hear that the last few miles were heading into forty knot winds. The this summer hasn't been kind. I'm a few miles south of you on the Isle of Man, and it's been like , only slightly warmer! Ancaster have confirmed that the 2009 will be shipped with a longer , so that should improve sailing performance. Thanks for the excellent feedback on the 420 hybrid upgrade and the pros and cons of the hybrid vs the diesel. I'm leaning towards the hybrid at this stage and can't wait to get out to the BVI's to assess the hybrid system for myself. Then I just need to find somewhere to keep one. I'll be interested to hear how you find the . I'm thinking of the . and trying to find a berth in the south of or maybe Palma using the relatively easy flights out of Glasgow or Edinburgh.

	block 2:1 block that attaches to the of the has blown out (it skipped out of the block grooves and when tensioned bent the mounting). Unfortunately I am not anywhere near the boat and was not able to detach the offending block and bring it with me. Anyone know what size/ model the original Ronstan block that is supplied with the L420 is? (I can't see it anywhere on the web or in the specs there - also Catco, the vendor, don't know what it is). Alternatively, can anyone suggest a suitable replacement or switch out that they have had experience with? Thanks in advance. Hans

Boat: Privilege 435 Now Sold	on the 420 main Ronstan block is 3". I suggest you might like to replace the Ronstan with a similar sized product. My similar size cat has a fitting and has gone through more than 180 weeks without needing the block replacing.

Boat: Lagoon 420 Seas the Day	and foredeck, but got the blue. Catamaran Company offered to get the beige for us, to match what we have in the , but after living on the boat for a few weeks, we decided the blue would be better for outside. The beige would eventually get too dirty and the blue does look good. We do like it in the saloon and in the owners area however. So, I guess Im saying if you want them outside, you can get them from Lagoon, but you might want to think twice. PM me and I can give you more information. Jan

Given the disdain of the French for fast food, I hope Lagoon will forgive my suggesting that for its 420 catamaran, it borrowed Burger King’s “Have it your way” approach to pleasing customers.

The stylish 420 made its debut at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis in 2006 as the first hybrid-powered production sailboat and immediately caught the attention of buyers intent on going green. Rather than traditional diesels, the 420 Hybrid is powered by a pair of electric motors and a battery bank that can be recharged either by shore power, an onboard diesel generator, or by the boat’s propellers when sailing faster than 7 knots. For those not convinced that the time for hybrid power has arrived, the 420 is also available with 40-horsepower Yanmar diesels and saildrives.

But Lagoon hasn’t stopped there with its versatile and popular 420. At Strictly Sail Miami last winter, it introduced a third version, with a beefed-up power plant, for owners who might have considered a power cat. This latest iteration of the 420 sports twin 75-horsepower turbocharged Yanmars and saildrives. At a cruising speed of 2,200 rpm, we averaged 7.7 knots; wide open in shallow Biscayne Bay, we topped out at just under 9, though Lagoon America’s Nick Harvey said the boat should do at least a knot better in deeper water.

Sea trials conducted by Lagoon indicate that at cruising speed, the 40-horse engine uses .7 gallons of diesel an hour; it uses about 2 gallons wide open. Each of the 75s burns a little more than 1 gallon an hour cruising and just less than 4 gallons of diesel at full throttle.

Harvey said the opportunity to offer the 420 with various power options was designed into the boat’s twin hulls from the outset. Unlike the Lagoon 440, which has fairly narrow sterns, the hulls of the 420 carry a lot of beam aft to provide more buoyancy. The result is a boat that’s very maneuverable under power. When we were motoring in the channel just south of Miami, the 420 accelerated and stopped quickly, and on our return to the dock, a very competent captain impressed all as he parallel parked along a busy dock, moving the boat all but sideways.

The wind slept in on the morning of our test ride, so about all we could prove under sail is that the sails could be rolled, furled, raised, and dropped. But as on its hybrid cousin, the 420 turbo is well set up for sailing. All control lines are led to a starboard-side raised helm station. Winches include a pair of standard self-tailing Harkens for the jib sheets and a self-tailing electric winch for the main. It would be safe to assume that this boat, with some breeze, would turn in a respectable performance, as does the Hybrid.

The 420’s interior is fitted out with Lagoon’s new light-colored woodwork. Layouts include two double cabins in each hull, or an owner’s version with three staterooms.

So there you have it. From wind to turbo, as the French would say, “Chacun a son gout.”

The hulls are constructed with a single seam, rather than the double seams on standard inflatables. Less seam work minimizes the likelihood of damage at the weakest spots of the boat. The seams use a chemically bonded gluing system for durability against brittleness.

The fast draining removable Tube Transom® is simple and portable, which makes Takacat one of the most versatile inflatable boats in the market.

A. The Takacat line of boats are designed for quick and easy assembly. No need to mess around with heavy and complicated floorboard systems, our high pressure air deck floor fits perfectly in place while it inflates. Inflation with the supplied manual pump takes about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the boat and your urgency. Inflation with an electric pump takes about 8-10 minutes

A: We recommend cavitation plates for outboards greater than 6hp and less than 20 horsepower. Our dealers carry a wide variety of brands, we have tested and confirm the efficacy of the Permatrim and the Davis Dole-Fin.We recommend having your propeller cupped if you experience any cavitation or ventilation. Cupping the prop will give the propeller more grip in the water and increase performance.We recommend PowerTech stainless steel propellers for the best possible performance of your Takacat, although not necessary in most cases.

Permatrim Plate

Lift the power and performance of your Takacat’s gas-powered outboard motor with a Permatrim Hydrofoil. The catamaran design with a single, centralized outboard lends itself to ventilation on higher power outboards. This is more prevalent in the shorter models, but can be brought out on any of the Takacat boats.

We have a remedy to this problem by way of another New Zealand product—Permatrim. This foil plate bolts to the cav plate (the little tongue that sticks out over the propeller) and does a good job of fixing cavitation issues. It also helps get the boat on plane quicker and easier, and reduces splashing from the transom when underway. Fitment Guide:

Lagoon 421 – Longer and Better

It is another Lagoon model which was born as the improvement of the previous model, Lagoon 420. Lagoon 421 is one foot longer than her forerunner while some more improvements made it a completely new yacht. Bows are now vertical and transom skirts are much wider . Fixed bimini top extended living space from the saloon to the cockpit.

Skipper’s helm station is covered by fixed bimini while mainsail is cut in a manner to hoist the boom so there are no troubles with it colliding with skipper’s bimini while sailing. Since the boom is the hoisted part of the hardtop, it could be used even as a sunbathing area . If you do so, please take extra care because the edges of the roof are rounded and your towel could easily get stuck into the ropes.

The cockpit can be turned either into the dining area or lounge because it is equipped with a changeable table. The light is again the keyword for interior design since there are large vertical windows in the saloon as well as large sunlight windows in the cabins. Natural ventilation of all interior spaces is provided by large and convenient opening hatches. Wide sidedecks, as well as the aft deck, provide easy and safe walking all around this cat.

Bridgedeck is gullwing-shaped which brings additional comfort when sailing on the waves. Almost all mentioned above brings improved comfort and elegance , which was, in fact, the point of redesigning the previous model. I think it completely fulfilled its purpose.

Lagoon 421 is available in 3 or 4 cabin versions , depending on the owner’s demands and sailing schedule. Still, since it is a rather small yacht, I would recommend as a charter option for smaller groups so the comfort and elegance can get their full gloss.
