In a year when an unprecedented number of mid-40-foot yachts have been launched, Hanse has thrown its hat into the ring with the 458, but is she up to the challenge?

One has to hand it to Hanse, 
it knows what its buyers want; modern, easy to handle cruisers.

There is no variation of use or style in the range – every Hanse is recognisable as a Hanse. If you want one, you only have to decide what length you want and the number of people you sail with.

The Hanse Group can do this because of the other marques within the group: Dehler for speed, Moody 
for comfort, Privilege for catamarans. With Sealine and Fjord in its motorboat division, it has all bases covered.

If anything, Hanse has been too good; the Judel/Vrolijk hull originally from the 455, in 2014, looks as good 
now as it did then.

The deck layout worked too, so 
there wasn’t that much that really needed improving.

Therefore, rather than reinvent the wheel Hanse has addressed the few shortcomings of the 455 and modernised her.

She is now the 458.

THE TEST VERDICT

Rather than being a wholly new boat, the 458 improves 
on the 455. Does she do enough to complete with the plethora of new 45ft yachts launched in 2018?

For ease 
of sailing and helm layout (with electric winches), yes. Like all recent yachts from Hanse she was delightful to sail, even with just two of us on board.

The feel on the wheel was smooth, and for a large yacht with spacious accommodation she offered a genuinely enjoyable and relaxing sailing experience.

Where she loses out to her competitors is the feel of onboard space both below decks and in the cockpit. 
That’s not to say any area on board is lacking, but seeing what Bavaria has done with its C45 it feels bigger even though her beam is only 10cm more, but it’s carried well aft.

Interestingly the aft berths on the Hanse are both 9cm wider than the Bavaria. The Hanse, however, offers a high-quality and effortless sailing experience that makes it a pleasure to helm, even shorthanded.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

It’s not often I find a large boat that is easy to sail without being a handful – usually because of sail controls. But Hanse has got it right, again.

The self-tacking jib makes tacking as hard as holding onto the wheel and turning it, the mainsheet can be controlled from either side, so it’s always to hand. With the addition of a ‘Furlstrom’ the Achilles heel of a self-tacking sail plan (namely reduced off-wind sail area) is no more.

The interior has style, space and comfort, and the galley works at sea, so it’s practical too.

Then there is the large forward cabin, with separate shower and heads compartments for the couple who own her.

If simple sailing performance and enjoyment are your priority over voluminous space then the 458 will have much to tempt you.

Hanse 458 Details

The Hanse 458 is one of the builder's newest models for sailors who prefer to set their own trend. The exterior lines of the 458 are unmistakable, contemporary, and elegantly flow from the transom to the tip of the bow. The interior is as equally impressive with more volume that you would anticipate being on a 46' luxury sailboat. Nominated as the "Best Cruising Yacht" in 2018 by The British Yachting Awards, the quality of the Hanse 458 is certainly no secret. Each Hanse Yacht produced is different than the last because every owner is different. Hanse offers unprecedented customization opportunities to make your sailboat personal to you. Hanse's goal is to make you feel completely at home while on the water and the 458 executes that extremely well. The materials and construction techniques used are among the very best possible and the design by Judel/vrolijk and Company ensures a smooth, speedy performance. The combination of "perfectly harmonized" lateral plan with the pre-balanced rudder guarantees optimal performance. Best of all, Hanse makes it easy by allowing for complete control of the vessel by a single person.

Here are a few of the features that make the Hanse 458 unique:

• The high rig on the 458 allows for a large sail area at the masthead. The wind is normally stable at this height which can increase the speed of the vessel and keep good balance.
• The 458 has both a steep stern and a straight stem. This design attribute provides a long waterline at any heeling angle which results in superior speed.
• The sail has been trimmed for optimal performance and there is an adjustable backstay included. This enables both the mast and the profile of the sail to adapt to the wind as it changes.
• Hanse Yachts invented the integrated self-tacking jib system so all the lines go to the helm. Captains can now sail alone or enjoy more of the time with guests on board without working so much.
• The deck of the 458 is very smooth and clean. The halyards and sheets are hidden below deck.
• You have the ability to control the entire Helmsman system from the cockpit.

The main deck is noticeably clean and spacious. It is has a modern look that focuses on the enjoyment aspect of the experience. The cockpit area on the deck consists of two L-shaped lounges for sitting or sunbathing. A folding table opens up to provide a fantastic area for dining al fresco. There is a sink and barbecue grill integrated near the helm for easy serving. Hanse design has changed sailing dramatically as now everyone can enjoy the cruise without ropes in the way and the entertainment space tidy.

Stepping into the salon of the 458, you will immediately notice several things - there is a lot of indirect sunlight filling the cabin, everything is organized well, the color palettes are calming, and there seems to be a lot more space than other boats in its class. All furniture is hand-crafted by Hanse so it fits perfectly with the space and flow of the interior. Whether entertaining or enjoying the peace of the ocean, the Hanse 485 offers a spectacular indoor living area that never feels dark or cramped.

There are two layout variations offered on the 458 which can include up to 9 bunk beds on board. The owner's suite is spacious and includes a lavish private bathroom. Hull-side windows and opening skylights allow light and fresh air to circulate through the owner's cabin and guest staterooms. The attention to detail in each bedroom is second to none, allowing all on board a perfect night's sleep at sea.

Design Ratios: The Key Performance Indicators

The Hanse 458 is a modern yacht that pushes sailing technology forward, offering a seamless blend of performance and comfort. Yet, its performance under sail can be assessed through various design ratios including the Sail Area/Displacement Ratio (SA/D), Ballast/Displacement Ratio, Displacement/Length Ratio (D/L), Comfort Ratio, and Capsize Screening Formula.

The sailboat possesses a  Sail Area/Displacement Ratio (SA/D) ratio of around 18 to 22. This suggests that the Hanse 458 has ample sail area for its weight, contributing to its responsiveness and windward performance under standard conditions.

It shows a Ballast/Displacement ratio of around 30%, meaning that the boat is relatively stable, due to its well-distributed weight, and can handle heavier winds and rougher seas.

A Displacement/Length ratio of 200 translates into a moderately light boat that strikes a balance between performance and comfort, while leaning towards the former.

The Comfort Ratio is an impressive 30. Given this value, the Hanse 458 promises a smooth ride and living-aboard comfort, enabling long distance cruising without sacrificing too much in terms of performance.

Moreover, the Capsize Screening Formula places the boat at a highly desirable value under 2.0, suggesting resistance to capsize and suitability for ocean passages.

However, while the boat is known to perform exceptionally well in light to moderate wind conditions due to its sail area and weight, some sailors have noted challenges when piloting it under high wind and rough sea conditions.

But just how reliable are the design ratios?

The Sailplan

The standard sailplan of the Hanse 458 is designed to guarantee quality performance while keeping handling manageable for any sailors. The sail area spreads across approximately 103 square meters, promoting balance and good speed.

The main mast is crafted from aluminum and supports a fully battened mainsail which is easy to hoist, douse and reef thanks to the lazy jack system fitted as standard. The jib is self-tacking, making the Hanse 458 an ideal boat for single-handed sailing or for those preferring easy maneuverability.

For further sail options, the 458 can be fitted with options such as a code zero or a gennaker, adding flexibility to the sailing experience depending on the chosen waters and wind conditions. These would be set on a fixed bow sprit that carries the anchor, and acts as a tack-point for downwind sails.

All the lines are led aft to the helm, making the yacht easy to control with winches positioned within reach of the helmsman. This contributes to making the Hanse 458 a pleasure to sail, whether you're cruising long distance or racing around the buoys. Moreover, the self-tacking headsail and the option to control the yacht, including the sails, from the helm station eases the sailing effort and underlines the sailboat's responsive and direct nature.

Interior Layout & Design

The Hanse 458 is designed for comfort, functionality, and luxury. The well-crafted interior design is highly customizable, allowing buyers to choose their preferred layout. It usually offers two main configurations, either with three or four cabins.

In the three-cabin version, the owner's suite is located in the bow (front) with an ensuite head, including a separate shower. The two guest cabins are positioned aft (at the rear) and share a separate head, which is also available for general use. The fourth cabin option can either add another guest cabin or can be used as a utility space.

In the four-cabin version, the owner's suite is located at the fore, similarly with an ensuite, complete with a separate shower area. The space that was once a large storage area in the three-version cabin is converted into an additional cabin located at the starboard side, aft. This turns the boat into a perfect space for larger groups or families.

In both versions, there's a well-equipped, L-shaped galley to portside. The kitchen is designed with ample workspace, a two-burner stove, a fridge, and an optional freezer or microwave. Multiple storage spaces are provided for storing galley appliances, utensils, and food supplies.

Furthermore, the interior includes a spacious saloon, which is perfect for relaxing or socializing. The navigation station is at the starboard side, neatly included within the saloon area. The Hanse 458 sailboat is finished with high-quality fabrics and materials, and it has a touch of elegance and a warming ambiance, thanks to the use of teak or alternatively oak for the furniture, accompanied by lots of natural light from the numerous hull windows.

The Secondhand Market

Potential buyers looking for a Hanse 458 for sale will find active listings on the secondhand market. Prices vary considerably based on factors like the year of construction, equipment, and condition of the boat.

On average, a pre-owned Hanse 458 sailboat can range from $350,000 to $550,000. New ones purchased directly from Hanse tend to be pricier, running above $600,000. Regardless, with prudent research and negotiation, a suitable Hanse 458 can be found that fits into the budget.

A valid skipper’s license and VHF license for a Bare-boat charters. Charterer must render evidence that one has licences, skills and experience required to independently charter the yacht. Possession of the license for operating of the pleasure craft that is issued by the state authority of the country that you are coming from. The VHF license is required as well. Licenses from almost all European countries are accepted in Croatia.

Nimbus is an excellent sailboat!!! Normally we are booking the boat to people coming in Greece for sailing. We for ourselves also participate in some of the local regatas all year round A normal booking request is from Sat afternoon to next Sat 9:00 Where to sail: I propose for one week a trip in Saronic Golf area because of distances and available time to sail. This itinerary provides excellent opportunities to visit magnificent lonely places, swimming in turquoise waters, amazing sunsets, traditional island port towns and many more. The cost: The boat cost as described in our pricelist The skipper cost is 1300€/week End cleaning is 150€ Fuel refill will be approx. 150€/week Eventual water refill and electricity approx. 50€/week Port fees approx. 8€/day
