Best bluewater multihulls: HH OC50

  • Toby Hodges
  • November 16, 2021

HH Catamarans are known for their lightweight flyers, but the new OC50 is designed for bluewater cruising couples, Toby Hodges and François Tregouet report

oc 50 catamaran price

The Xiamen-built HH range of catamarans found popularity for its high-performance, all-carbon, hull-flying designs such as the HH66 and HH55 . But the HH OC50 is designed as a more affordable cruising alternative, and one that targets ocean sailing. Hence it earns its place in our bluewater multihull listing .

The Morelli and Melvin-designed HH OC50 is still stiffened and strengthened by carbon, but built in vinylester composites with a gelcoat finish. This adds an additional 300kg or so over a full carbon HH50, but cost savings are in the region of $400,000.

Solid glassfibre fixed keels with winglets are used instead of daggerboards, which are independent of the hulls and are designed to take the weight of the boat.

HH describe the new Ocean Series as designed with cruising couples firmly in mind. The OC50 comes with a self-tacking staysail and genoa for ease of sail handling. Sail controls are led to a single raised helm station, which has a fixed bimini and canopies for full enclosure.

Practical features for bluewater cruising include plentiful deck stowage, generous tankage, removable transom washboards and tech spaces in the forward cabins.

There is a generous forward-facing navstation and a U-shaped galley with deep drawer fridges and freezers.

HH Catamarans has also recently unveiled a new OC44 model.

 HH CATAMARANS with SCOTT ROCKNAK

hh catamarans offered by scott rocknak, the new hh catamarans ocean 50, the hh ocean series 50 (oc 50) shares the same interior as the hh 50. the hull shape is very similar above the waterline. where it differs is that the boat has keels instead of daggerboards, is constructed of e-glass and epoxy, and has an aluminum mast. there are other things of course but these are the primary ones., th oc 50 is a performance keel boat. more so than others. the oc 50 offers all the hh engineering, design, and quality of its hh line sisterships. the boat bridges the gap between the more complex daggerboard boats and the heavier cruising cat offerings. the e-glass epoxy combination is what you see on the top flight semi-production and production performance choices. e-glass also offers a price savings over carbon construction., the oc 50 has all the halyards, sheets, and control lines led aft to a helm station on the starboard side. the winches are in front of you and wishing reach. instrumentation is flush mounted and can accommodate a large multi-function display., with this steering position you are part of the action in the cockpit and have clear sight lines forward and aft., point it and go. but go faster than the fleet. call or write for my performance analysis. also available is a vpp. carry the solar you need, the big tender, entertain your crew, and have something that stands apart from the fleet., deciding between the hh 50 and the oc 50  i can help. for a quick email form click here., there is a decent option list for the oc 50. solar, a/c, watermaker, generator, scuba, and so on. write me for it.  , its a distinctive boat off the shelf and you can make it even more so. our price sheet even calculates the weight of the boat. why because weight matters with catamarans. remember, the oc 50 is a performance keeled cat. you’ll find everything you need on board for a comfortable and rewarding experience. what you’ll be less inclined to see are items that create large amounts of mass. keep it light. keep it fast., the single helm buys you a lounge area on the port side. theres a choice of materials for the cockpit and transom steps. notice the boom. you won’t need a step ladder to access it. like the hh line, all oc 50’s have a boom located within reach. loading up with the custom solar panels they’re the walk-on variety. all 1.5 kw of them., the salon doors all slide port or starboard making the salon and cockpit one. this point can’t be understated. i have photos that illustrate this., a clean bottom, low wetted surface and performance designed keels define the oc 50 underwater form. what makes this boat different is that its a morelli and melvin design. these folks know what they’re doing. look at the shape from underneath. now snorkel under your next charter and look at that shape. see the difference, above is the owner’s cabin version. port hull has the head forward with a large shower. there are his and hers lockers. you can battle over the drawers. well, maybe not, as we know who’s going to win there., the big take away here is that the cabin is light and airy. lots of light and ventilation. and a choice of finishes that separate the oc 50 from the catamaran aisle at ikea., this is the same rendering i have on the hh 50 page. both boats have the same salon. the are several blends of options to choose from in terms of finishes and fabrics. you would expect that in a boat of this caliper. please inquire for additional renders..

oc 50 catamaran price

Looking outboard in the port hull owner’s cabin we have additional lockers. They’re about 1/2 the depth of the inboard lockers and ideal for folded clothing, towels, and personal items.

Notice the windows. all three have an opening port as well. you can also see the four opening hatches on the coachroof. note that those hatches are flush mount lewmars., the aft window has a view of the sea. its larger than other boats in this size range. it really makes a difference..

oc 50 catamaran price

The above image  is shown with the twin overhead hatches. Nav Station to port. “L-Shaped” Settee and a table with sofa-seat to port. The owners cabin model has a sliding companionway. This is a rendering of the darker interior finish selection. There are also selections for the look of the cabin sole.

Living aboard the salon of the oc 50 rivals larger boats. this is especially so when you can combine cockpit and salon. i have the general arrangement plans. just ask..

oc 50 catamaran price

You can choose a Four Cabin Model as well. An option is to have the pipe berth in one or both of the forward cabins. This can fold down or up at an angle when not in use. Use it as a spare crew berth or to put several duffle bags. Inquire about the soft cabinet storage containers that will fit on the pipe berths. Note that the rendering above is actually an HH 50. On the OC 50 the daggerboard trunks could be a shelf system or open space.

The dinghy shown is an ab al (aluminum) 11’ in length. the davits can handle larger and i have developed several examples of dinghy and engine combinations ranging from center consoles, custom tube colors, and more., inquire also for a storage map where things could go. i believe you will be presently surprised of the capacity..

oc 50 catamaran price

Shown above is the master cabin. In this case it is the port hull. It is possible to have a (2) cabin, (3) cabin, and (4) cabin interior. The interior finish shown here is the artificial wood in a walnut. All trim is solid walnut. You can choose from a large variety of artificial or actual wood veneers.

Andrew Hodgdon and The Multihull Company have done an extraordinary job facilitating the sale of our catamaran. There were a couple of challenges (geography and timing) that made this sale a little tricky, but, as usual, Andrew was amazing. I’ve been buying and selling cruising boats for over 12 years and Andrew is, without a doubt, the best broker I’ve worked with.

Andrew Hodgdon at TMC-St. Augustine kept us thoroughly informed during the sale of our boat and took the extra steps necessary to complete the deal. His knowledge of the process made a complex deal very easy. Needless to say, we are extremely happy and satisfied with the job that Andrew did.

Performance Catamaran Comparisons

Performance cruising cats are becoming more popular and mainstream. A lot more brands have become available on the market over the last 10 years. Some of the most popular and well known performance cat brands are Catana, Outremer, HH Catamarans, and Balance. These boats’ popularity is not only driven by their amazing sailing abilities but also by YouTube channels like Sailing La Vagabond with their Outremer 45 and Gone with the Wynns who recently bought an HH 50 OC.

We Joined the Performance Catamaran Enthusiasts!

Catamaran Guru acquired a Catana Ocean Class 50. We take possession of the boat in September 2022 at the Cannes Yachting Festival .  After a hiatus for a few years to focus on the Bali range, Catana released in 2022 their Catana OC 50 that has the industry abuzz including ourselves. Its new bulkhead helm station, the open plan design, the comfort, interior spaciousness, and the affordability convinced us to take the leap and buy one. Read our review here>>

Let’s Look at Some Fundamentals

Of course, before we bought the Catana OC 50, we did a little research on the most popular performance catamarans. We wanted to see how these boats compare in performance.  One of the big factors that determines performance is Power-to-Weight ratio (or sail area to displacement ratio). We calculated the Bruce number and SA/D for the Catana OC 50, HH 50 OC, HH 50 Performance, Balance 482, and Outremer 51 . This is not the be-all and end-all but one do get a good indication of performance for these boats in steady sea conditions.

But before we dive down into it, let’s heed this advice from two veterans in the industry. Measuring a multihull’s performance is a complex issue that we all tend to want to boil down to a simplistic solution, which it is not. In the words of Tony Grainger: “…as a species hard wired for optimism, we’re prone to magical thinking, especially in the hands of marketing pros and advocacy scientists delivering theoretical solutions to complex problems.” As he says, “Prediction of performance and actual Observation are two very different things”. Phillip Berman from Balance Catamarans concurs: “Even the most accurate input, polar performance numbers on cruising catamarans are seldom achieved”. So, take this for what it is, simply numbers on a spreadsheet.

Some definitions:

  • Bruce Number – a power-to-weight ratio for relative speed potential for comparing boats. It takes into consideration the displacement and sail area of main and jib (100% fore triangle only), no overlapping sails. Light boats are more easily driven than heavy boats and more sail gives you more drive.
  • SA/D (sail area / displacement ratio): indicates the power of the sail plan relative to the displacement of the boat, regardless of the length.

We used the Bruce-SA/D calculator  to calculate the SA/D range of values:

  • 16 to 18 Heavy offshore cruisers
  • 18 to 22 Medium Cruisers
  • 22 to 26 Inshore cruisers, racing boats
  • 26 to 30 Extreme racing boats

Catamaran Measurements

oc 50 catamaran price

Points of Consideration

  • We used the published numbers on the manufacturers’ websites to do the calculations and some of those numbers may be slightly off. We tried to verify but have not received feedback. Any input is welcome!
  • We used only the mainsail and jib area on all the boats to get an apples to apples comparison.
  • The “Lightship Displacement” quoted in each of the manufacturer’s specifications was used in the Bruce number calculation. Note there is an anomaly in that the Outremer, which is the biggest boat with the least carbon fiber, is quoted as being the lightest boat of the group. We think the lightship displacement quoted on the Outremer website might be inaccurate because it is unlikely that a predominantly E-Glass boat would be lighter than a full Carbon boat such as the Balance or HH performance. If anyone has reliable numbers for Outremer, we would love to hear from you! *We have received new information and have updated the weight of the Balance with new actual published numbers.

Some Observations and Conclusion

For performance cruisers there is a fine balance between speed and comfort and they are not for everyone. Speed does not always make for comfort. Operation of daggerboards, bigger and more powerful rigs and more complex running rigging require more skill, making them not suitable for the average cruising sailor. The conclusion we drew from this exercise is that all these boats are essentially very similar cruisers with very similar performance characteristics, except for the Balance, which stands out as the real performance boat. *Updated information shows that this boat is very similar now to the other boats. We believe that most of these boats are capable of good performance in light conditions, which is of course the beauty of a performance cat. These are our observations:

  • The measurements for these boats are all very similar.
  • Balance is the lightest boat (full carbon) at 25,353lbs 29321lbs  with a big sail plan at 1,432 sq ft. These boats are super light and fast and moves in very light air.  *We updated the Balance weight with new actual published numbers.
  • According to the SA/D numbers, the Balance is rated in the “extreme racing” category at 26.549 and a Bruce number of 1.292.   The Balance turns out to be very similar to the other boats SA/D “inshore cruisers / racing boats” category like the other boats
  • The rest of the cats all fall into the SA/D “inshore cruisers / racing boats” category. So, these boats should all perform similarly and sail well even in light conditions.
  • The Catana OC 50 (carbon deck and bulkheads) and the HH 50 Performance (full carbon), surprisingly are rated very similarly. The Catana is heavier but has a bigger sail plan and thus has similar performance to the HH.
  • The HH 50 OC has mini keels rather than daggerboards and will likely not have the same performance to weather as the daggerboard boats.
  • The Catana is the heaviest boat at 31,164lbs with the biggest sail area at 1469 sq ft.
  • The Catana has the highest load carrying capacity of 10,723lbs – great for cruising and living onboard.
  • The fuel tanks on both the HH catamarans are 4 times the size of the water tanks which is curious and nearly double the size of any of the other cats. That seems a little odd, but we could be wrong.
  • Fuel capacities vary greatly between the boats, with Outremer having the least fuel capacity at 88 gal.
  • Water capacity varies slightly, also. Catana and Balance carry around 210 gals while the others carry around 100 gals, which is a bit small for live aboard in our opinion.

We also concluded that while these stats are interesting data, they should not be the overriding factor when choosing a boat in the performance cruising category. Other factors to consider include quality, comfort, livability, equipment, safety, resale value, etc. Price is also a very big consideration. Balance (South Africa) and HH cats (China) are way more expensive than the French-built cats, Catana and Outremer, partly because the Balance and HH Performance are full carbon boats while the others have carbon infused deck and/or bulkheads. We believe that the Catana’s interior volume and comfort make it an extremely livable boat while still having the performance benefits of an express blue water cruiser and it is extremely affordable at around $1.5 million.

Having said all that, with the advancement of technology, more people will be able to sail these performance cats safely and will be able to afford them as more hulls are built and costs come down.

Here is another very interesting analysis Sailing into Freedom. The top 10 performance catamarans – Dazcat 1495, ORC 50, Odisea 48, Balance 526, Outremer 45, Outremer 51, Catana OC, HH 50, OC 50, Balance 482, HH44, Seawind 1370, Seawind 1600, Slyder 49, Privilege, Windelo 50. Catana Ocean Class

oc 50 catamaran price

We first saw the Catana Ocean Class, a 50 footer, at La Grand Motte in 2022 where she was one of the main attractions of the International Multihull show. The layout is a bit of a departure for Catana (although they have launched similar helm set ups back in the day), as she has a raised mid-position helm on the starboard side.

Catana were famous prior to that for their sporty twin aft-helms configuration. I think that this will probably widen their market but it might upset a few Catana traditionalists.

The French manufacturer hadn’t launched a new model since the 2016 launch of the 53, as they were focusing on their Bali Catamarans range. Let’s see if they expand the range after the launch of the OC50.

Photos from Catana.

Judging from the reception the boat was getting at the show, this model should do well. This isn’t an “out and out” performance boat like a Marsaudon, but it offers a fantastic mix of performance and comfort that should prove popular. You get a nav station that looks like it belongs in Star Trek AND a full sized American fridge/freezer.

She’s stiff and strong thanks to decades of “carbon infusion” experience in building performance yachts at Catana, and with those daggerboards she should sail upwind well.

  • A unique blend of performance and comfort
  • Strong and rigid.
  • She carries the same sail-plan as the Catana 53 despite being shorter. This catamaran should move particularly in fresher conditions.
  • Great layout in the saloon. I love the nav station to port next to the cosy L-Shaped sofa
  • Competitively priced
  • That big fridge!
  • It looks like the weight distribution is further forward compared to, say, an Outremer. the mast is stepped through the saloon. the nets are quite a bit shorter.
  • Not as quick as some of her competition in lighter winds
  • I am not sure about the aft sliding doors being so far back. It doesn’t do the profile any favours and I would worry in a big following sea. I’d have liked to see a version with the doors further forward
  • To get to the helm, you need to walk round onto the starboard deck. No big deal, but you are separated from the “pack” inside, although the starboard aft window slides right open.
  • Does look a bit like a Bali on steroids.

She certainly looks seaworthy with her boxy, muscly profile and high freeboard. The Ocean Class carries the same amount of mainsail (90 sqm.) as her bigger sister: the 53.

The nacelle is 90cm above the water – this boat sits high on the water, which will help her power through big waves.

You can set the boat up with either an overlapping genoa (64m²) or a self tacking solent (50m²). In lighter winds, you can fly a Code O (105 m²) or a gennaker (130 m²) off the bowsprit. Light displacement is 14.5 T and she will soak up to 4.5 T of weight.

Like all Catanas, the Ocean Class has a bridle system for the mainsheet rather than a traveler. The windward sheet functions as the mainsheet/traveler while the leeward one is used to flatten the sail.

The disadvantage of this is that the main is not strictly self-tacking: on each tack, you need to release the leeward sheet( as it will become the windward one on the new tack) and flatten the sail by tightening the new leeward sheet. But, you can trim your mainsail very effectively with this kind of system and I know that Catana owner’s swear by it.

All of the lines run back to the single raised helm (except the light wind sails of course). This boat has been designed to be sailed by a couple, and the visibility from the helm to all 4 corners is good (although you need to duck around a bit to see the aft port side).

The Catana Ocean Class is powered by 2x 45HP engines (there is an upgrade available to 57) which will power you along at 7 knots and over with a decent sea state. Or just use one engine and cruise at 6 knots. She will carry up to 800L / 211 US gal of diesel.

Construction

The Catana Ocean Class is built with foam coring and vinylester resin infused into the hulls, decks and bulkheads, with added carbon fiber and Twaron cloth to increase strength and stiffness in high stress areas. She is a strong rigid boat.

Living Space

This is an area where Catana have put some blue water between themselves and the competition. Despite the mid position helm, the living space up top is very generous and well laid out. Stepping up the aft steps on the sugar scoops, you arrive at a wide aft deck area with winches on either side for your lighter wind sails.

An aft bench runs along the transom and then you are through the sliding doors that open right up to maximise the living space on one level.

Aft of the saloon is an L-shaped sofa area (room for 5) around a folding table. Along the starboard side runs a storage area and 2 pull out fridges. A sliding window opens fully to connect to the raised helm position on the starboard side.

Moving forward, there is a substantial nav station to port with a great looking helm seat. To starboard, is another large L-shaped sofa running along by the forward windowns which open right up.

The galley (with sink and a half) is positioned centrally to port behind the nav station leaving room for the full size American fridge-freezer to port and a central drinks cabinet and bar area behind the mast. It’s a well thought out design. The height of the roof in the saloon is 2.13m

The only thing that would worry me is the position of the sliding doors which are well aft. This has the benefit of giving you a huge enclosed space at anchor, but I would worry in a big following sea.

catana ocean class configuration

There are 3 basic configurations:

  • Owner’s version with owner’s suite in the port hull with shower and seperate head forward
  • Four Cabin version with twin bunks aft (that convert into a double),  and seperate head and shower in each hull
  • Four Cabin version with twin bunks aft (that convert into a double),  and twin head and shower units in each hull

The finish is light oak effect and looks very smart. The quality doesn’t match the level you would see on a Balance or HH. They are aiming for a level on par with an Outremer.

The storage space looks well thought out and the whole feel is very light and airy, similar to the Catana 53. The height down here is a roomy 2m.

Here is the Catana Ocean Class Brochure .

This model represents a clever positioning from Catana, a great combination of performance, comfort and value that is pretty unique in the market. Its closest competitor is probably the Seawind 1600. Let’s see if they extend the range with this format and launch a 47 and a 42.

How much is the Catana Ocean Class? What is the price of this catamaran? As always, we will qualify this answer with “it depends on the options you go for”, but the price range runs from €915,000 to €1,250,000 for a fullly equipped boat. That’s pretty competitive versus the competition.
