Italian shipyard OTAM is one of the oldest on the Ligurian coast of the country. It was founded in 1954 on the coast of the Gulf of Tigullio: OTAM — Think Tigullio Assistenza Motoscafi. For more than 60-year history, the company became famous for his >open cruisers type Gran Turismo.

Why the Otam 70HT is one of the most efficient fast yachts on the market

Customisation is key when it comes to building luxury yachts. But Italian shipyard Otam Yachts takes customisation to a whole new level by personalising not only the visual styling of its vessels, but every single detail in the construction process to meet the exact needs and desires of the owner.

“Otam brings the 'big boat mentality' into the medium-size range of fast yachts – the level of customisation is equal to that of large superyachts,” explains Matteo Belardinelli, sales and communication manager at Otam Yachts. “Not only can the aesthetics be customised, but the client can also choose the technical and structural specifications according to the priorities and needs of the yacht.”

The brand’s latest masterpiece, the 22.3-metre Otam 70HT , unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023, is a perfect example of this commitment to bespoke luxury. This high-speed yacht is capable of reaching top speeds of 50 knots and cruising speeds of 40 knots, meaning it’s not just about looks and comfort but also performance and efficiency.

The art of extreme customisation

Each Otam yacht exemplifies individuality, with every detail tailored to the owner's vision. Belardinelli sheds light on this process, stating: "We meticulously plan the interior layout before laminating our hulls because it significantly impacts the weight distribution. With over 100 units of Otam yachts, none are similar, given each client's personalised interior layout and lamination.” To bring these visions to life, the Otam 70HT was designed by Giuseppe Bagnardi of the Italian BG Design Firm. Once the client's interior desires were clear, Otam customised the lamination and weight distribution to fit these layout requirements.

Able to cater to a range of clients’ requirements, the Otam 70HT could serve as an ideal chase boat for larger superyachts, shuttling guests swiftly between destinations. Its ability to navigate shallow waters and user-friendly design mean that even the owner can take the helm if desired.

The power of materials

Otam’s commitment to customisation goes beyond the yacht’s layout and extends to the materials in the construction process. Unlike many other yacht builders that rely solely on GRP, Otam employs a mixture of Aramat, Kevlar and carbon fibre in the build process. “Building a high-speed boat in these materials means that the final product is robust, safe and comfortable for all on board,” says Belardinelli. “Lightweight materials aren't suited for a vessel capable of reaching these high speeds, as they lack the flexibility and rigidity needed for both quality and comfort.” The Otam 70HT is constructed from a blend of Aramat and vinyl ester resin, enhanced with carbon fibre longitudinal reinforcements, which were customised to meet the owner's interior requirements.

True Italian craftsmanship

At Otam, there is no compromise when it comes to craftsmanship. Otam prides itself in adopting a unique process when building yacht interiors. Rather than having interior structures built externally and assembled on the yacht, the interiors of the Otam 70HT, like all Otam yachts, are built on board and by hand. This meticulous process ensures utmost solidity and eliminates vibrations. Belardinelli underscores the commitment to excellence, stating: "This is an example of true Italian craftsmanship where both style and precision are at the core of its DNA." Furthermore, every aspect of an Otam yacht is designed with strength in mind. The majority of the interior elements, like partitions and bulkheads, are welded from the keel to the deck using Kevlar fibre, resulting in an exceptionally sturdy and reliable vessel.

Efficiency beyond compare

The fusion of advanced materials and a deep V hull shape, designed by Umberto Tagliavini, drives exceptional fuel efficiency in Otam yachts. Belardinelli emphasises: "Otam yachts often consume one-third less fuel than their counterparts because the deep V hull minimises water contact compared to rounded hulls. Our yachts also traverse distances in nearly half the time of others." This translates to a more eco-friendly approach and reduced engine strain, ultimately extending the yacht's longevity. The Otam 70HT is a shining example, boasting a fuel capacity of 5,500 litres (with an optional 1,000 litres) while consuming an average of just 10 litres per mile.
