Ryan Harrison, a Partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said, “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range and worldwide reputation for quality and innovation.  KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future.  We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, Chief Executive Officer Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

This definitive agreement will lead KPS Capital Partners to acquire a controlling equity interest in the historic company which, founded in 1965, has been owned by the private equity group L Catterto since 2002. The deal is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023 and will see existing shareholders retain ownership of the company.

The announcement comes after the company unveiled its expansion plans just last year, which also include the construction of a new facility in Devonport; an absolutely strategic operation then, as Princess itself confirms: “ it iwll help support these plans and reinforce the unique national and international marine capabilities that reside in Plymouth and the wider SouthWest region”.

Princess Yachts Purchased by U.S. Investor

Princess Yachts Y95

Britain's largest yacht manufacturer has been purchased by a U.S. private equity firm.

Princess Yachts , who have been a figurehead in Plymouth, England since their launch in 1965, was made available for purchase by private equity group L Catterton in 2022, who purchased the brand in 2008, and have now been acquired by U.S. based KPS Capital Partners .

The deal will provide KPS with a controlling interest in the company once the agreement is finalized in the first quarter of 2023. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In a press release , Ryan Harrison, a Partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said, "We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range and worldwide reputation for quality and innovation. KPS' investment will accelerate Princess' growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future."

"We look forward to working with Princess' existing stockholders, Chief Executive Officer Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts," he added.

Antony Sheriff, Chief Executive Officer of Princess Yachts, also stated, "We are thrilled to partner with KPS for this exciting new chapter for Princess Yachts. KPS and the Princess Yachts team are deeply committed to investing in the Company's future while continuing to further strengthen our portfolio of best-in-class motor yachts. With a current order book nearing a record $1 billion and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position."

"Together with KPS' tremendous track record of manufacturing excellence and investing in leading brands, we are now positioned to take Princess Yachts to the next level of industry leadership in quality and innovation. Under KPS' ownership, we will accelerate a range of growth and operational initiatives to build upon our long and successful history."

KPS is based in New York and has an extensive portfolio in manufacturing assets across North America and Europe. The firm currently holds approximately $14.4 billion of capital under their management.

This is not KPS' first foray into marine acquisitions, although their first purchase was only tangential. In 2019, KPS purchased the fitness equipment business owned by Brunswick Corporation , who are the marine industry's largest conglomerate and own such brands as Mercury Marine and Sea Ray, for $490 million. KPS also holds stakes in Briggs & Stratton , the world's largest producer of gasoline engines for outdoor equipment, and Autokiniton Global Group , a major automotive parts supplier.

Princess Yachts, meanwhile, is currently holding a flush order book of over $1.1 billion and recently unveiled a new flagship model - the Princess Y95 . The company experienced record sales over the last two years, taking over 300 orders in 2021 alone and requiring the company to expand manufacturing capability at their shipyard. They currently employ over 3200 people across five different manufacturing facilities around Plymouth, England.

Princess Yachts has been taken over by a major American private equity firm in a deal which will take the Plymouth company “to the next level”. New York-headquartered KPS Capital Partners has entered into an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in Princess Yachts (Holdings) Ltd, and said the investment will accelerate the company’s growth and innovation.

Existing shareholders will retain ownership in the company under the deal. Completion of the transaction is expected by the end of March.

KPS runs a family of investment funds with more than US$14.4bn of assets under management. For more than 30 years it has been acquiring manufacturing businesses and its current portfolio includes component maker Autokiniton, light vehicle manufacturer AM General, Briggs and Stratton engines, battery maker C&D Technologies, and plant-based foods business Primient.

Antony Sheriff, chief executive of Princess Yachts, said the deal will enable the Plymouth firm, the UK’s largest manufacturer of luxury yachts, to grow and bring out new models. He said: “We are thrilled to partner with KPS for this exciting new chapter for Princess Yachts. KPS and the Princess Yachts team are deeply committed to investing in the company’s future while continuing to further strengthen our portfolio of best-in-class motor yachts.

“With a current order book nearing a record US$1bn and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position. Together with KPS’ tremendous track record of manufacturing excellence and investing in leading brands, we are now positioned to take Princess Yachts to the next level of industry leadership in quality and innovation. Under KPS’ ownership, we will accelerate a range of growth and operational initiatives to build upon our long and successful history.”

KPS’ portfolio of companies already generates total annual revenues of about US$22bn, operates 232 manufacturing facilities in 27 countries and combined has about 53,000 employees. KPS said it creates value “almost exclusively through operational and performance improvement”.

Ryan Harrison, a partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said: “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range, and world-wide reputation for quality and innovation. KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future. We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, chief executive Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team, and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Princess Yachts was acquired by L Capital 2 FCPR, an investment group co-sponsored by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) and Groupe Arnault in 2008. In January 2016, L Capital merged with Catterton to become L Catterton, now recognised as the largest global consumer-focused investment firm.

Last year L Catterton hired bankers at Macquarie to find a buyer for Princess Yachts . At the time, Princess Yachts told PlymouthLive it was looking to start discussions with potential investors to provide financial support needed to build a huge new factory at its Devonport operation.

In late 2021, PlymouthLive revealed Princess Yachts wants to build another factory in Plymouth’s freeport area in the South Yard so it can produce more vessels, employ more people and fulfil a US$1bn order book. The company was also undergoing a sales boost, now selling more than 300 boats annually.

Princess Yachts V55 Reviewed

  • By Chris Caswell
  • April 21, 2023

Princess Yachts V55

For a nation about the size of Oregon, Britain clearly understands luxury. The Brits produce vehicles that set a benchmark: Think Rolls-Royce and Bentley, as well as Aston Martin, Jaguar and Lotus.

So it should come as no surprise that the Princess Yachts V55 has a level of luxury beyond just layout or speed; it’s about the details. Before I get into the amidships master stateroom or the two other staterooms, the gourmet galley or the cockpit arranged for alfresco living, consider the supple, handmade leathers and suedes used for the V55’s interior upholstery. The helm seats, with armrests and headrests, have flawless stitching that stands proud of the material, just like on fine cars. The leather couch in the master made me feel cosseted with the luxe material.

This is a highly usable yacht too. Boarding from the transom platform is via twin stairways flanking a sun pad, which conceals the garage that accommodates an 11½-foot tender. The cockpit has softly curved lines, unlike the dart-like hull with its black-window slash and sweptback windscreen. An L-shaped lounge with a folding teak table is to port, a couch is aft, and there’s a Kenyon grill and a fridge for outdoor cooking. The cockpit is protected from wind with full-glass side windows.

One particular detail caught my eye here: the disappearing salon door. The stainless-steel door into the salon slides, and the neighboring window slides down into recesses, opening the cockpit to the salon. It’s an impressive display of engineering, which, combined with the 90-inch-long sunroof and opening windows on each side of the salon, makes for alfresco living on board.

Princess Yachts V55 stateroom

The galley to starboard has a four-burner cooktop, a two-drawer Sub-Zero fridge and a microwave, along with several drawers and a pop-up pantry. A set of Princess glassware is in a fitted cabinet abaft the helm (and a Miele wine chiller is in the master stateroom). Opposite the galley is the settee with a fold-out dining table.

The Princess Yachts design team—Bernard Olesinski penned the hull—clearly looked at luxury cars when arranging the dash, which hosts a pair of 16-inch Garmin touchscreens and a separate monitor for the engines, all tucked under the wide lip to prevent reflections in the windshield. The helm is a skipper’s delight, with a row of rocker switches, throttle shifters and a wheel. The V55 I was aboard had the optional joystick, combining the twin Side-Power bow and stern thrusters with the engines to make docking easier, even when short-handed. I also applaud the detailed, eye-level electrical panel tucked inboard of the helm in the companionway.

The master stateroom spans the full 15-foot-3-inch beam with a queen-size centerline berth and stowage that includes a 5-foot-tall hanging locker for wrinkle-free clothes. A sliding door opens to the head and its 30-by-36-inch stall shower.

Forward is a guest stateroom to starboard with upper and lower bunks for the kids. The VIP stateroom is far forward with a queen berth that can split into V-berths when needed. The en suite head here has a private entry and does double duty as the day head. An optional crew cabin can be tucked aft with its own head and berth.

Princess Yachts V55 interior

Standard power for the V55 is a pair of 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 straight-shaft diesels, which is a change from the V50 and its IPS pod drives. The straight drives have less maintenance and more horsepower, and skippers still get the joystick for combining thrusters and engines. Of note is the hidden station to starboard in the cockpit with engine and thruster controls for docking.

The V55 I was aboard had several options that consume engine-room space, such as a Seakeeper NG9 gyrostabilizer and a larger genset (21.5 kW rather than 9.5 kW), yet I still had full headroom at 5 feet, 10 inches tall. All the systems are accessible, including the fuel filters, sea strainers and Mastervolt isolation transformer. Three Dometic air-conditioning systems are neatly plumbed on bulkhead racks for service.

With the hammer down, the V55 topped 35 knots at 2,450 rpm, which leaves the engines happy and long-lasting at a 28-knot cruise speed at 75 percent engine load and 2,100 rpm.

Speed for a yacht this size is nice, but the most striking feature of the V55 underway was something missing: noise. Rolls-Royce once promised that the loudest noise in its Silver Shadow was the clock ticking, and the Princess V55 isn’t far behind. My decibel meter barely hit 70 with the boat running flat-out. Dropping back into the high-20-knot speeds, it read just over 64. That’s about the same as background music. Dockside with the air conditioning running, I couldn’t hear the genset.

Princess Yachts V55

Underway, the Princess V55 handles like a much smaller yacht: light on the steering and not needing the Bennett trim tabs to climb quickly onto plane. We stuck our nose far enough offshore to prove that the deep-V hull form could easily handle the bluster of the English Channel, the Catalina Channel or the Gulf Stream.

All in all, this is a delightful offering from a land that knows luxury. Britannia still rules the waves.

Interior Matters

This V55 has the optional satin-finish walnut interior, which is pleasantly serene and modern. Standard interiors in satin finish include alba oak (light) or rovere oak (medium), while darker silver oak and walnut are options.

Dependable Diesel

Powering the V55 are twin Volvo Penta D13 diesels, a marinized version of the Volvo D13 truck engine, which has a worldwide reputation for robust and reliable operation, fuel efficiency and solid torque. At 780 cubic inches in a six-cylinder cast-iron block, it has fuel injection and electronic control systems.

Another Living Room

The V55 salon opens to the outdoors with a disappearing door, as well as a sunroof and lowering windows. Another outdoor living space is at the bow, with a wraparound couch, a cocktail table and another sun pad.

New Princess S80 yacht in motion

Exclusive: On board the Princess S80 debuting at the Cannes Yachting Festival

A sports yacht with a cruising soul, the S80 ’s DNA is born out of a hull that might end up being the best 25-metre platform to grace the seas, says Carl Richardson. He steps on board the new S Class flagship before its world debut at the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival.

First, an admission. Despite plenty of effort on all sides, this isn’t a full test. Time, tides and the demands of the boat show calendar meant we could not get out to sea. Instead, we were given a backstage-style tour with the design and technical teams.

The Princess S80 is the latest sportsbridge chapter in a story that can be traced back over a decade to the Princess V85-S, an impossibly powerful and daring yacht at the time. Since then, the British yacht builder has been a leader in sportsbridge design, leading us to this 70-tonne model, hitting around 32 knots with twin 2,000hp MANs. These figures are important because the boat the S80 replaces is the 50-tonne S78 that can hit 38 knots with 1,900hp MANs.

Performance and speed are key for any genuine sportsbridge model, and so we start with a new boat that is heavier and slower than its predecessor, but it is also bigger in every key area. The S80 uses the same hull as the flybridge Y80 and the Tardis-like X80. The modified V planing design from naval architect Olesinski runs on shafts (as nature intended) and can push each yacht to around 30 knots while delivering the same, class-leading four-ensuite-cabin lower deck.

Speaking to Princess design director Andy Lawrence, a lot of thought went into not only making a different kind of S flagship but also into the hull itself. “It was always going to be a three-boat 25-metre platform running on shafts, we aren’t looking at pods for larger boats. The challenge was creating a hull that would perform as well on the S as it does on the X, two very different boats.”

The X80 does work – according to BOATPro it is one of the best-selling yachts in its class. But it is a much bigger boat than the S80 above the deckline, meaning it is not just about managing extra weight but where that weight is.

Andy Lawrence explains: “The X80 has a much higher CG (Centre of Gravity), but working with our partners Olesinski, over many iterations, we found the right balance.” These iterations included increasing the beam for greater volume, while extending the waterline to hit the speeds expected of an S Class yacht.

Ultimately, Princess delivered three different 25-metre models that all run fast, with the expected option of a MAN 2,200hp engine option delivering the possibility of 36 knots for the S80.

R&D & then some

Princess is a global powerhouse, but its success is anchored by the people at its yard in Plymouth, England. Alex Cleverly was part of the technical team showing us over the boat, but until very recently he was a Princess delivery skipper. He made his first trip at age 16 and regularly clocked up 16,000 nautical miles a year – “I was the person who started work when everyone else was leaving for home, collecting a yacht for delivery to Scandinavia or the Mediterranean,” he explains.

Alex made detailed reports from a skipper’s point of view, on things like visibility, spray, where water might pool on deck, the lumber of the helm seat or access to engineering points. In short, the kind of research and development (R&D) that money can’t buy – and all that knowledge is now on the inside.

Princess ideology has long been about balance, that sweet spot between space, style and performance. Immediate impressions are good. The S80 looks low, sleek and powerful in the water, its extra length allowing its lines to stretch out, the upper sportsbridge barely visible within the rake of the roofline. Where some sportsbridge models might have more than a little flybridge height and bulk to help increase interior space, the S80 is pure performance yacht.

Given that so much conversation about any modern yacht is about volume and accommodation, it was refreshing to hear Andy talk about the importance of style. “The key was the sportsbridge. On a yacht like this, profile is everything, we wanted a big sportsbridge deck, but one you couldn’t actually see!”

Before I get too idealistic on sports style, there will be a hard top option for the S80 which makes perfect sense for a good number of boating reasons, but will change the yacht’s low-down, growling profile (I'm hoping a few emotionally led buyers stick with the standard awning so the rest of us can enjoy the original lines).

Moving up the easy aft deck steps, the sportsbridge is a vast social expanse of yacht style with the driving position rightly set at its heart. It’s a noticeably and provably bigger and better deck than the S78. The extra foot (0.3 metres) of beam works wonders. There is so much deck space but also vast and separate areas of seating plus a massive barbecue and bar, a central island of cold storage and room for a pop-up TV.

It’s the same story back on the aft deck. A familiar Princess layout sees two massive asymmetric pads flank your journey up from the hydraulic platform and garage. But things are different here and it’s another key part of the S80 design. With more room to use, the deck now has three separate social areas, dining, sunbathing and lounging, without the need to convert or move anything. Better still, it’s all done with space to spare and masses of stowage space worked in.

Again, there are no happy accidents here. The initial design saw the staircase and dining table in different positions, but the full-scale mock-ups Princess employs for every new model changed that. We now have a walkaround dining table to port with superb views out over the deck and sea beyond.

Glass-panelled flanks extend aft from the superstructure to ensure that, with the view, privacy and protection are also ensured. The sportsbridge overhang keeps everything feeling intimate and beautifully lit at night - there’s even air-conditioning overhead and the option to enclose the dining area with awnings.

The rest of the decks are just as good. The side decks sit within waist-high bulwarks with gates each side and deep storage lockers forward. Even with the superstructure pushing forward, Princess has found a good deal of space for the foredeck lounge, where eight guests can gather in circular conviviality.

Power of 3 + 5

The S80 is the first Princess to have three lower helm seats. That may not immediately look like a headline moment for a 25-metre performance boat, but it points to something else. Everywhere you go on this boat, from the sportsbridge to the main dining table, its eight guests are able to gather and be together. Whether it’s enjoying the ride or lunch, on the S80, no one gets left behind.

The galley aft design plays a rightfully central role on the main deck. It’s part of the social scene, not hidden away below. A massive piece of glass hinges up to open inside to out, with a bordering storage unit sneaking in a pop-up TV.

The S80 is probably going to be crewed (by no more than two people given the tight quarters in the stern) but it is a social boat and guests will love the galley, dipping into the Sub-Zero refrigerator, massive drawer-style freezers or just hanging around the bar area. Storage space is off the scale, the galley’s multiple dedicated lockers include a pop-up pantry while across the way there is a deep, long sideboard.

Dining is clearly intended to be al fresco on the S80, but you can option a table for the saloon – it can handle the extra furniture. The saloon is massive, another heady example of Princess' ability to deliver interior space, harmony and splendour with an ease few other yards can match. Height and glass play an important part. Huge, 6ft (1.8-metre) high sections of glass line the saloon and, with the optional glass-panelled sunroof and helm side door open, it’s like you never left the deck.

If light and splendour invite you in, the deep, low sofas ensure you won’t leave in a hurry. The best seating area (isn't it always) is the smallest. The raised lounge forward, up by the helm, is a great spot at any time of day, but it’s the perfect guest spot when underway - kudos to whoever had the foresight to subtly lower the forward finishing panel to ensure the best possible view forward.

Anyone who has been aboard the X80 or Y80 will be familiar with the four cabin-layout below decks. The S version has its own smart, performance-edged colour palette and materials, but it will be the peerless layout that wins you over. Four class-leading ensuite cabins will look after eight guests with ease, including the owner’s stateroom which is a perfect blend of style, space and luxury wrapped in deep glass hull windows. A useful upgrade on the S78, there are now separate entrances for the walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.

The forward VIP is equally impressive with an outstanding ensuite and more storage space than seems necessary – and I never, ever think that. There’s a sense of fraternity going on here too, with each cabin featuring the same style notes as the stateroom, including plenty of solid wood to go with the coolly understated but always inviting modern interior finish.

Beyond the looks and luxury, this is a boat designed for the owner to drive, when the fancy takes them, and for their guests to join in on the experience of 70 tonnes carving through the water at 32 knots. Both the upper and lower help stations look and feel like a performance yacht should, with deep, supportive seats and an array of screens and dials. But just as important are the flanks of guest-seating each side of the sportsbridge helm or the elevated lounge to port of the lower helm.

Initial sea trials, with a light load but 12 people on board, recorded 36 knots powered by the standard twin MAN 2,000hp engines, so the official top speed of 32 knots looks nailed on. The MAN 2,200hp option will suit owners who like to cruise faster while adding two or three knots to the top speed. Talking to the Princess team, you get the feeling the extra power is also about the new S flagship being able to match the outgoing one – a competitive spirit I very much endorse.

To say Princess has a reputation for good design, is a bit like saying Patel-Philipe makes accurate timepieces. The S80, like all its stablemates, simply doesn’t put a foot wrong inside or out. The proportions are near-perfect, the styling confident without being challenging and the finish always brings that little bit extra – as with the use of solid woods and semi-custom levels of choice and detail.

The nearest yacht in terms of onboard luxury, design and space is the Azimut S10 . The S10 is a very fine vessel with an unmatched sense of performance yacht cool, but it is 9ft (3 metres) longer and notably more money. The fact it is the S80’s most obvious competitor says everything you need to know about how good a boat this is.

The only possible downside for an S80 owner might be the unnerving sight of a Princess X80 keeping up with you. For anyone concerned about such an event, the MAN 2,200hp engine is the upgrade for you.

The new fractional ownership yacht, the Princess Y72 will be based in beautiful Mallorca with her home berth either in the prestigious Puerto Portals or Club de Mar.  And when it’s time to drop the lines, you can enjoy the freedom of cruising on board your own yacht in the Balearics, along with a tender and choice of water toys to discover secluded bays for complete escapism.  Explore new adventures and create special memories with your loved ones on board your exceptional Princess Y72.

YachtQuarters shared yacht ownership program allows you to still own a yacht in the Mediterranean but without the hassle that long-distance yacht ownership can entail.  Full management is included from the service and maintenance of your yacht to bespoke passage planning and provisioning and even booking your favourite restaurants.  From the moment you step on board, you can sit back and relax as the experienced captain takes the helm to sought-after destinations plus a combined chef/steward/deckhand to ensure your life on board is easy with Princess Yachts fractional ownership.  And as a co-owner, you are owning a share in the asset that is the yacht itself; which means when the time does come to sell, you will receive an equal portion of the proceeds too.

‘ Our YachtQuarters shareholders have a dedicated Yacht Manager and access to our Concierge team. We take care of the calendar, the maintenance, the insurance, the berthing and the hiring of the crew. That means you get to walk on and off with zero hassle – and that makes the yachting experience all the more special.’

Joshua Cleaver, Princess YachtQuarters Manager

‘The YachtQuarters programme offered the perfect solution – a unique kind of yacht ownership that is less financially demanding than buying outright to see if I like the idea of owning a yacht.  The Princess brand gave me confidence that it would offer great service, and would make everything as easy as possible having the back-up of a concierge, team of experts and a yacht manager, and even crew.  It gave me great peace of mind and a really tailor-made walk-on, walk-off yacht ownership experience.’

James Swift, Princess 68 YachtQuarters Owner
