Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Rival 36

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 15.7 suggests that the Rival 36 will need a stiff breeze to get her going. In light conditions, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands, motor-sailing may be the way to go.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 39.2 means that the Rival 36 will have a tendency to heel excessively in a gust, and she'll need to be reefed early to keep her sailing upright in a moderate breeze.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 317, tells us the Rival 36 is firmly in the ultra-heavy displacement category. Load her up as much as you like and her performance will be hardly affected, not that it was ever startling. Few if any sailboats are built to this displacement category these days - but they remain popular with some long-distance sailors.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 30.4 suggests that crew comfort of a Rival 36 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a moderate bluewater cruising boat - a predictable and acceptable motion for most seasoned sailors.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.8 tells us that a Rival 36 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Used – Rival 36

Mention Rival yachts and most sailors think of fairly heavy, pretty, bulletproof affairs designed for crossing oceans in safety, with high speed not featuring particularly high on the priorities list. Rival Yachts, in its first iteration, was started by yacht designer Peter Brett in 1967 with the Rival 31, the first one of which was popped out of her mould in 1968. This was quickly followed by the slightly extended 32 and then later with the well respected 34, 41 and 38. The first 36 was launched in 1980, making it the sixth and final Rival from the company in its original form.

The Rival 34 in particular had gained many admirers in serious yachting circles following Wild Rival winning the OSTAR transatlantic race on handicap in 1976. The race had been a windy one and the 34 had triumphed in the main due to an ability to plug relentlessly to windward in conditions that had caused many other crews to ease off and yachts to retire. The 36 was launched with this triumph fresh in the minds of the boating public, to fill a gap between the slightly fuller ended aft cabin 38 and the bulletproof 34. The 36 was a fairly successful design for Rival with 78 hulls being launched from the Woolston, Southampton factory. Later, in the 1980s, Rival Yachts’, like many other boatbuilders’ stories became more complicated, performing and being subjected to various takeovers and mergers featuring Bowman, Starlight and Rustler, all illustrious names in their own right when it comes to world girdling cruising yachts.

The 36 was designed from the start with a lift keel variant, the 36C (for centreboard), which has a slightly shorter mast. The lift keel is a GRP foil that operates within an external stub keel with a flat bottom and grounding shoe for drying out safely alongside a harbour wall or similar. It is raised and lowered using a deck mounted winch. The 1984 model we are looking at here has the alternative deep fin keel of encapsulated lead. There was a third shallow draught variant offered with Scheel keel. The 36 was offered with sloop rig as standard and cutter rig and furling headsail were offered as options.

Entering the rich confines of the saloon, the first thing that strikes any visitor is the Rival trademark keyhole cut bulkhead. It’s actually quite a clever structure as it adds most of the additional strength of an extra central bulkhead without stealing too much natural light from the cabin. She’s constructed to Lloyds 100A1 standards and her solid feeling hardwood faced ply joinery bears this out. Maximum headroom is 6ft 3in (1.91m) declining slightly to 5ft 1in at the forward bulkhead. While small saloon ports and the hardwood finish are always going to create a darker atmosphere than in some more modern designs, I found it was actually quite bright and uplifting for a 25 year old boat. The saloon table is soildly constructed, amply fiddled and on some boats can be dropped to provide an occasional double. There are serious looking triple cup positions for pipe cots above the saloon berths, and the berths are a usable 6ft 3in (1.91m) long. Stowage under these berths is significant, thanks in part to the water tank being situated in the root of the keel and accessed through inspection hatches in the sole.

This is a real ocean eating plodder. She won’t be setting anybody’s pants on fire, but there are few 36ft boats available new today with the same cocktail of ocean going layup and design detail, and possibly none with the same unpretentious quality of finish. These boats justifiably hold their value very well, though it is a sad indictment on sailing snobbery that they would make more buyers’ shortlists if more of them had come with wheel steering.

For • Solid lump of quality boat • Heavy weather comfort • Proven seakeeping ability

Against • Would you get on with a tiller? • Not quick, especially in light airs

Review of Rival 36

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 201.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Rival 36 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.83 - 1.93 meter (6.00 - 6.30 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Rival 36 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD2030 diesel engine at 29 hp (21 kW). Calculated max speed is about 5.5 knots

The fuel tank has a capacity of 182.0 liters (48 US gallons, 40 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Rival 36 is 1.81, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Rival 36 is about 185 kg/cm, alternatively 1040 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 185 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1040 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

 • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
 • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
 • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
 • LOA: Length overall in feet
 • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A keel/centerboard and Sheel keel version was also available. CB version: draft bu: 3.75’, bd: 6.75’

I am in the market for my next boat and have seen a Rival 36. What I need is a boat capable of family coastal sailing just now but OK for short handed sailing further afield in a few years time. Any comments please on the Rival for this purpose?

Wonderful Rivals ! Haven't sailed a 36 but our R41A is truly wonderful. She is easy to single-hand, so beautifully balanced we rarely need an autopilot. After a Sadler 29 we wondered if she'd be sluggish in light airs and were pleasurably surprised - she'll go in a F2-3 and being heavy she slices through waves which stop lighter boats. We've had her 7 years and are still in love ! Many Rivals go long distance - the Rival mag. even gives a blithe account of a couple with their 13yr old daughter popping round the Horn ! The boats certainly inspire confidence - we haven't been out in too many blows but when we have she's just revelled in it ! Our only criticisms are a lack of space/stowage by comparison with more modern designs - but that's what you get if you choose that style of boat. And close-quarters handling, such as marinas, is "interesting". To save further grey hairs we fitted a bow-thruster - not necessary but does make life easier. Highly recommended - if you hadn't guessed !
a pragmatist is an optimist with a boat in the UK

For all droolers, some vital statistics. Rival 36 The R36 was the sixth and last RIVAL designed by Peter Brett and comes in three basic versions. Deep draft, Scheel keel, and Centre board. 78 R36s were built. The first being launched in 1980. L.O.A. 35' 10" L.W.L. 27' 2" Beam 11' 0" Draft 3' 9"and 6' 9" or 6' 0" Displacement 14,250 lbs As an R38a owner I'd say that the r36 is probably the best of series as a compromise of robustness and sailing performance

Thanks to all for the replies. I was hoping the 36 might have a reasonable performance and I think that will be the case. I have posted a wanted advert on the Rival Owners page so will see if I get any replies. The one in Ipswich has a scheel keel and cutter rig, is owner finished and has just been treated for osmosis. The one down south has the deep keel and sloop rig, is factory finished and is being treated now for osmosis. Any comments on the rig or keel options welcomed.

Birdseye

It doesnt have a reasonable performance in my view. I sailed alongside one for a couple of days off France a couple of years back, and I was genuinely quite surprised by how badly it performed. Sail slowly and pitches. Pointed less well than my Prout cat which is hardly the answer to windward work. Probably very safe and secure but as a heavy old fashioned type of design, dont expect good performance by modern standards except perhaps in a howling gale. Quite put me off a boat that I had fancied.
this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.

Re: Ohlson 38 I thought Clare Francis did the Trasat in an Ohlson 38? The Rival 38 is quite tubby and is not a scaled up R34 or scaled down R41. The Rival 36 was different again.

I regularly sail a well used Sigma 36 for a sailing school & cannot agree that it has any problems to windward. You sure the boat you saw wasn't 'hove to'. Yes they like a 'howling gale', yes they don't have the room or freeboard of a modern AWB, but I know which I'd choose to sail offshore. Reefing also is much easier & safer than most AWB because you are lower down on the coachroof. Are they a family boat for short handed sailing? Set up correctly yes - no vices. Will they turn heads in a Marina, probably only amongst those who can appreciate a good classic design. Will SWMBO be impressed, probably not if comparing below stairs with an AWB. Why not contact me & I'll put you in touch with the school for a taster sail so you can assess it yourself prior to spending £'s - invite SWMBO as well.

I agree with you about the Sigma 36 - its an excellent boat to windward, and a pleasure to helm. Not quite sure what this has to do with the Rival 36 which is a complete contrast and, as you suggest, a traditional design (read old fashioned?) with some virtues in heavy weather and lots of disadvantages the rest of the time. On the other hand, if you want something with small internal volume, slow sailing, doesnt point high, expensive, but well made - its the boat for you. The sailing equivalent of a Rover? And about as exciting.
this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.

westhinder

The Rival 36 is latest in the series and definitely the fastest, while retaining all the excellent sea-keeping qualities. As you might expect, the deep keel version points a little higher than the Scheel keel, but the difference is not dramatic. Build quality is very high, as is the factory finish. Stowage is excellent. If you plan to make longer voyages, here's a great boat for a couple. Do I recommend them? Most certainly. Am I biased? Owning a Rival 34, so most probably.
Johan

Quite tubby! You are talking about the woman I love, handbags at dawn, sir.

Re: Ohlson 38 OK, I'm standing in the corner with a Dunce's hat on!
Let's Twist Again

Boat: Passport 42
in Direction Bay. After some searching found out it is a Rival 38 (Boat name isWandering Dream to be specific).

I liked the lines of the and was wondering if some of the more experienced crowd out there could tell me what the general feedback was on the design, sail performance, cruising ability, layout etc. of these are. My sailing experience is still limited (but growing by the week) so unsure as to what would be a similar type of vessel from a performance perspective.

I couldn't find to much info other than the searches and here on the forum, I see there is an owners forum as well.

Any owners (or previous owners) out there willing to share an opinion?

from the top of the down to the bottom of the . Very solid, dependable .

I was thinking of getting one, as a friend had the 36, and it was a tremendous . It's one of those boats that if you have a thought as a , "Wouldn't it be nice if . . . ?" then you find the Rival already has it. But a few years back even old ones were way out of my reach (I really liked the 32, but my friend said just get the 36). Should add, this "Rival already has it" is down to basic darned good stuff to have fitted, not in respect to desirable but unnecessary 'bling' that some may hanker after.

I've always hankered after one.

Maybe one day. , you don't even have to think about leaving harbour, you just go.

Perhaps that's the best compliment they can have.

Now I can't vouch for that capability personally (I've never been in that situation with one), but it is something I have heard echoed elsewhere over the years.

but I am an owner of a Rival 38 in and can tell you they are one hell of a boat. I have owned a number of French boats over the years but this cant be beaten for comfort, ability to sail in a breeze in a big old Atlantic swell.
You should check out the book (Cruise-Luna-Quest-Eric-Faber) and blog. He has just completed a and is presently in the .

It is also worth having a look at the Rival website:

You mentioned Wandering Dream Steve Litson blog is full of information and makes great reading they also have just completed there trip around the world trip and are also in the at the moment.
.

If that boat is still in she would be worth a look at. As there are none in the world at the moment.

Best of luck with your search believe me it is worth it.

. The boat beautifully in all conditions. We've had maximum gusts up to 40 knots here in the so we were the only boat out, and she cut through the waves and handled the (with 3 reefs) like a dream.

For low cruising she still but it would be worth an investment into light sails for sailing downwind. Sailing into the wind is no problem.

I'm currently renovating the woodwork inside and out, and getting the boat MCA certified to put on sail later on this year. The only reason we sell is so that we can have a that can take 10-12 people in comfort to fit more of our associates onboard at one time.

I've sailed on a few plastic fantastic's and this is a million miles away. In 30-40 knots of wind you can steer the boat with 1 finger with a minimum of effort. You will also feel in complete control and .

If you want any further info or want a sail, feel free to be in touch as she'll be on sometime near the end of this year.

Cheers
Dave

for long distance stuff and will always look after you. Ours has the slightly taller and so sails really well even in light airs. We have been cruising the from hobart to bowen over last couple of years and are currently in Moreton Bay. If you can get to us we would be happy to show you the boat if you are still interested.
BTW, we are reluctantly thinking we will put the boat up for sale in the near future. ☹️
