Schooner Zaca

Launched in San Francisco on the eve of the great depression, the schooner Zaca explored stone-age civilizations in the South Pacific, patrolled the California coast as an armed ship of war during World War II, and served as party boat for sailor and swashbuckling actor, Errol Flynn. Left to languish as a striped hulk on a mud flat in the south of France, schooner Zaca rose like the phoenix to sail again. Sail in her wake and gain a unique perspective on history and experience adventures most of us can only dream about.

the zaca yacht

Started building in 1928 and finished in 1930.   Garland Rotch (designer) was largely inspired by the famous Bluenose schooners.   Originally commissioned by Templeton Crooker, a Yale educated San Francisco banker.   Zaca went around the world twice on scientific expeditions due to the owners interest in Marine Biology.  Crooker then joined the war effort and sold Zaca to the U.S. Navy for $40,000.   Zaca was then painted requisition gray-blue, fitted with 20mm guns and a crew of 35 sailors.

In 1945 Errol Flynn discovered her, and bought her in 1946.   He invested $80,000 towards her restoration:  new masts, repainting etc.   In 1952 Flynn died while trying to sell Zaca to pay off his debts … In 1988 Zaca ended up sinking in the port of Beaulieu.

1991 Roberto Memmo bought the wreck, refloated her and she was restored in IMS shipyard in Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer, near Toulon.   Officially rechristened by Memmo on 22nd September 1994.

I Can't Believe It's NonFiction

A collection of strange, but true, stories…

Built in 1930, the Zaca is a wooden yacht commissioned by Templeton Crocker.

the zaca yacht

Templeton spent much of the next 10 years traveling the world on his boat. He was a scientist and left much of his research to the California Academy of Sciences.

During World War II, the Zaca was acquired by the United States Navy and used to rescue the crews of downed American planes until 1944.

Actor Errol Flynn purchased the Zaca in 1946. He owned the vessel until his death in 1959.

the zaca yacht

The yacht sat docked and rotting until 1965 in Villefranche, France.

In 2008, Roberto Memmo purchased the Zaca and completely restored the vessel.

Visitors to the Zaca claim that it is haunted by the ghost of Errol.

Errol was born June 20, 1909 to Theodore and Marelle Flynn in Tasmania, Australia.

He often described his mother’s family as seafarers and had a lifelong fascination with boating.

the zaca yacht

In 1926, he was expelled from school for theft. When asked about it later in life, he would claim instead that he had an affair with a female employee of the school.

Errol found a job as a junior clerk in Sydney, Australia, but was fired for stealing money.

His first film role was In the Wake of the Bounty in 1933 and sparked his interest in acting. He went to Europe to study acting shortly after the film was released.

He tried his hand at stage acting, but was fired from the Northampton Repertory after throwing a female stage manager down the stairs.

the zaca yacht

Errol’s performance in Murder at Monte Carlo led to a trip to Los Angeles, California and a contract with Warner Bros. Pictures.

He married Lili Damita in 1935. The marriage lasted 7 years. The couple had a son named Sean. Sean was an actor, as well, before becoming a journalist. Sean was declared dead in 1984 after disappearing in Vietnam.

In 1938, Errol starred in his most famous role as Robin Hood in The Adventures of Robin Hood.

In 1942, two 17 year old girls accused Errol of statutory rape. He was acquitted in 1943, but his reputation was forever tarnished.

That same year he married Nora Eddington. The marriage lasted 6 years.

the zaca yacht

He married Patrice Wymore in 1950 and the couple remained married, even if just on paper, until his death.

Warner Bros. terminated their contract with Errol in 1953. He made 35 films in the 18 years he was under contract.

Errol became known for living a hard and fast life. He drank and smoked and was popular with women. The expression “in like Flynn” became popular after his acquittal of the statutory rape charges.

Errol was just as fast and loose with his finances and often found himself broke.

Needing to make some quick money, Errol flew with 17 year old Beverly Aadland to Vancouver, British Columbia in October 1959 to lease the Zaca to a man named George Caldough.

the zaca yacht

Before he could catch his flight home, Errol complained of pain in his back and legs. He was taken to the home of a doctor who was friends with George. The doctor treated Errol for pain and told him to rest.

Errol lost consciousness in a bedroom of the doctor’s home and was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he died on October 14 at the age of 50.

His official cause of death was heart failure with cirrhosis of the liver as a contributing factor.

His ghost is said to be seen walking the deck of the Zaca at night.

What is known about the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily and those aboard

Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts are searching for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and ...

PORTICELLO, Sicily -- Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts were searching Tuesday for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily.

The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived.

Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.

Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board.

Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported.

Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard.

Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello.

Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch , sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a U.S. fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.

Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11.

Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.

Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity.

One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef.

The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy.

Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water.

According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic.

Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website.

While scientists haven’t attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months . Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely.

Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer , and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20% higher than the global average.

Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events.

“This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing.

Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel.

“When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in. It would take a couple minutes and that would be it."

As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly.

The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.

Corder reported from The Hague, Netherlands. Associated Press writer Sylvia Hui in London contributed to this report.

Final body recovered from wreckage of luxury yacht off coast of Sicily

A body believed to be that of Mike Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter has been recovered from the wreckage of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily, meaning all missing passengers have now been found.

The discovery comes as unconfirmed reports in the Italian media have said that prosecutors are set to announce a manslaughter investigation into the incident.

The Italian Coastguard said the sixth and final missing person had been located on the sunken Bayesian on Friday.

A green body bag was seen being brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking.

Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, said the search for Hannah has not been “easy or quick”, comparing the sunken yacht to an “18-storey building full of water”.

Mr Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the yacht sank at around 5am local time on Monday.

Mr Zagarola said: “From the first moment, it has not been easy or quick to inspect the boat.

“Think of an 18-storey building full of water.”

The bodies of all six missing passengers have now been brought to shore in the small fishing village of Porticello, around 11 miles from the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

One of Hannah’s former teachers paid tribute to her after her body was recovered from the wreckage, saying: “I will remember her for what she taught me: kindness, compassion and commitment.”

Jon Mitropoulos-Monk, head of English at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, said: “I’ve never taught someone who combined sky-high intellectual ability with warmth and enthusiasm in the way Hannah did.”

Her friend Katya Lewis also paid tribute to Hannah, saying: “Being with Hannah made me feel whole and happy.

“She is the most special friend anyone could ask for and I will always love Hannah.”

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping on to a lifeboat.

The body of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the superyacht, was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

The boat trip was a celebration of Mr Lynch’s acquittal in a fraud case in the US.

The businessman, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Mr Zagarola previously said a decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is “not on the agenda”, but will be in the future.

The luxury yacht’s captain, James Cutfield, has reportedly been questioned by authorities in connection with the sunken yacht.

Giovanni Costantino, chief executive of the firm that built the yacht, told The Times it was “absurd” that passengers on the yacht were in their cabins.

He told the newspaper: “Why were (they) in their cabins?

“Local fishermen saw the storm was coming, why did no-one on board the Bayesian realise?

“From 3.50am, the captain had four minutes to get the passengers out of their cabins.”

He continued: “They should have jettisoned the anchor, started the engine, pointed the bows to the wind and put the keel down.

“If they had done that, no-one on board would have been afraid, they would have been back to bed in an hour and ready to push on with their voyage.”

Tributes have been paid to those who died in the disaster, with some describing Mr Lynch as a “visionary unlike any other”.

Eleanor Lightbody, the chief executive of the legal AI company he founded called Luminance, said: “He had a unique ability to spot the next technological revolution and solve tomorrow’s challenges before others even knew they were coming.

“Above all, Mike was a kind man who had an impact on many and will be sorely missed. I feel honoured to have known him, worked with him and learnt from him over the years.”

In a statement confirming their parents’ deaths, the Bloomer family described the couple as “incredible people and an inspiration to many”.

They said: “Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

“Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.”

A helicopter, remotely controlled underwater vehicles, naval units and cave divers have been used in the search.

Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank as the area was hit by a storm.

The wreckage of the Bayesian is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres (164ft).

Prosecutors in the nearby town Termini Imerese are scheduled to hold a press conference on Saturday morning.

At last, Bonnie Cother is back from her visit to the UK and I have just now been in touch.

The ordering particulars are these:

The book is $29 (USD) and for the USA, shipping and handling is $5. Please check with her if you are outside USA.

No credit card or personal checks. A money order or the equivalent and to please make the check out to Veronica Cother-Bentley and send your order to the address below.

The Post Office informs her that shipping usually takes between 5 and 6 days.

If you want it sooner that can be arranged also but you must contact her for a different price

[email protected]… Veronica Cother-Bentley P.O. Box 7621 Winter Haven, FL 33883

To refresh your memory:

She has said: “my father was the Master/Captain of Zaca during 56/57……….. the journal is full of photos of EF and family, copies of original letters to and from EF……..log book entrants……….. telegrams, and information dad has typed re meeting with EF.”

(Bonnie has further related this most interesting tidbit- that her father and Errol Flynn had MUCH common- not the least of which … a shared birthday!)

I am REALLY looking forward to this book as it is another unusual (and to date, unknown) witness to events that has come forward- albeit indirectly. In fact, had Ms Cother not gone through her fathers' things, discovered this treasure trove of Flynn stuff (and, in many cases VERY fragile items at that) and TAKEN THE TIME OFF to do loving justice to the assemblage of it all … I shudder to think of the alternative! Afterall, think of the almost fate of the Zaca itself!
