Nuraghe of Barumini

Nuraghe are ancient circular stone constructions that were built by the Nuragic civilization people between 1900 and 730 BC. More than 7000 of these mysterious structures can be found on the island, and being unique to the island of Sardinia, a visit to a couple is a must. Once upon a time, it is estimated that their numbers exceeded 10,000. The mystery surrounding their function is still ongoing, but chances are they were used as homes, temples, or meeting places.

The most well-known and best-preserved is the complex at Barumini, which was also added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1997.

Porto Rotondo Distance: 70 nm*

You’ll embark on your Sardinia yacht charter on the Emerald Coast in beautiful Porto Rotondo.

This elegant resort town is a popular stop-off for visiting superyachts throughout the summer but has a more peaceful atmosphere than its neighbour Porto Cervo .

Whether you’re starting your trip by relaxing on one of its many beaches or making a visit to the nearby Bay of Aranci and the island of Figarolo, this is the perfect way to enjoy a luxurious setting in privacy.

Cala Di Luna Distance: 100 nm*

Cruising further south the coast, you will discover many coves and beachfront to anchor dotted around. 

Today you will have a choice between a variety of gorgeous beaches, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzé, Cala Luna, Cala Fuili and Cala Cartoe. Cala Di Luna is at the heart of Sardinia’s east coast, tucked away in the Gulf of Orosei and characterised by its deep caves carved in the limestone cliffs which protect it from the winds. We recommend you make this your prime anchorage. 

The beach is only accessible by sea or a 4 km hike so it remains quiet despite its beauty and soft golden sands. Enjoy an al fresco lunch on board, absorbing the spectacular setting before spending the afternoon snorkelling in the crystal clear waters.

Cagliari Distance: 70 nm*

Your third day in Sardinia will be spent in the island’s capital, Cagliari, where you can spend a day strolling around the colourful and historic city districts.

We recommend you begin the day with a coffee in the Stampede District’s lively and bright Piazza Yenne, then follow the winding streets of Catello to see the landmark Bastione di Saint Remy.

After your cultural lessons, head down to the peaceful Villanova District where you can do a spot of shopping. Be sure to reserve a table at Niu restaurant for a decadent and elegant feast. Finish the afternoon back in the marina and take a stroll down the promenade that overlooks the Mediterranean .

Southwest Coast of Sardinia Distance: 80 nm*

As you cruise along southwest coast you’ll be treated to a treasure trove of Sardinia’s natural beauty, historical remnants, and beautiful beaches.

Along the coast you can discover the wild backdrops of Costa Verde and the cliff-bound coves of the Iglesiente. Inland you can visit the museums of Iglesias and the Unesco-listed Nuraghe Su Nuraxi in Marmilla if you're interested in learning about the island's ancient past.

Offshore, the outlying islets of Isola di San Pietro and Isola di Sant’Antioco offer a more remote aspect of Sardinia and are well worth a visit for their unique, tropical settings. With many anchorages for your motor yacht , this part of Sardinia is certain to be a hit with you and your guests. 

Alghero Distance: 120 nm*

Heading to the northwest, the pretty medieval town of Alghero waits for you.

Once ruled by the Spanish, Alghero still holds a strong Catalan feel today, from the architecture right through to the excellent cuisines for which it is known for. Alghero is also close to the beautiful Riviera del Corallo, famous as the home to the network of caves within the rocky headland of Capo Caccia - Grotta di Nettuno, which must be visited when you’re in Sardinia.

For supper, you will have many coastal bars and restaurants to chose from. However, if you're looking for something slightly more sensational and indulgent, we recommend that you reserve a table at Al Tuguri.

La Maddalena

Your final stop-off on your luxury yacht charter  vacation is the beautiful La Maddalena Island.

Only accessible by boat, it is the main island in an archipelago made up of seven large islands (La Maddalena, Caprera, Budelli, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Spargi, Razzoli) and 55 tiny isolotti. Here you are free to soak up the unspoilt settings, hop between the islands and get to know the friendly locals - the perfect way to finish your trip.

In the north, there are a large number of charter fleets in the immediate vicinity of Olbia, for example Portisco, Cannigione and others. The journey is pleasantly short, all are practically right in the heart of the area, it is only a few miles to the next beautiful bay or the next harbour. WIND & WEATHER

In summer, winds often blow from the north-west along the north coast, often around 5 to 6 Beaufort in the Strait of Bonifacio due to the jet effect between Sardinia and Corsica. Around the Maddalena archipelago, on the other hand, it often blows from the south-east to south-west, around 4 Beaufort. In the low season, the mistral in the Strait of Bonifacio brings a lot of wind and also high swell from the north-west. The most reliable mistral forecasts from the French weather service, here the website with the forecasts. In autumn, strong winds can also blow from the south-east.

NAVIGATION & SEAFARING

Sardinia and the Lavezzis as well as the south side of Corsica are peppered with shallows and rocks, which are part of the appeal of the area, but also mean a certain degree of difficulty. Skippers should always keep an eye on their plotter and chart. There are also many individual rocks just below the surface of the water, and charter crews frequently run aground.

In Italy, minimum distances from coasts and harbour entrances apply when anchoring, otherwise severe fines can be imposed. The Italian coastguard regularly carries out sporadic checks. The minimum distances are 300 metres from harbour entrances, 200 metres from beaches and 100 metres from rocky coasts.

There is a large national park around the island of La Maddalena, which includes many of the neighbouring islands. Travelling there costs a fee, and there are a whole series of anchoring bans and restricted areas to be observed. For example, anchoring is not permitted at night in some zones, not even in mooring buoy fields and certainly not in sea grass areas. In addition, the yacht must be equipped with a holding tank for overnight stays. The entrance fee for the national park area is 2 euros per day and metre of boat (for boats up to 16 metres). It can often be purchased in advance from the charter company.

HANDLES & ANCHORS

The area is famous for its many beautiful anchor bays with marvellous sandy beaches, fantastic rock formations and turquoise waters. These can be found particularly in the north-east of the island and on the small offshore islands of Maddalena and Lavezzi. They are often deeply indented and offer good protection in shallow water, ideal for safe anchoring. The islands often have sheltered bays for every wind direction, so you can easily anchor in changing weather conditions. If you want, you can easily spend a week or more here without getting bored. In the high season, however, the popular bays do get crowded. There are buoys in some of them, which are a good alternative. Anchoring is usually free-swimming, and because of the distances to be maintained from the shore and bathing areas, shore lines or similar are rather unusual.

The harbour network on the Sardinian coast is good, with marinas such as Portisco, Cannigione and Porto Cervo offering berths. However, they are expensive, and the latter in particular is almost unaffordable for charter crews in summer, as it is a mecca for mega yachts. In Italy, it makes sense to contact the harbour in advance via VHF radio, and reservations are also quite common. Marineros help with mooring lines and the service is usually good. This is complemented by some municipal harbours, such as the one in the main town of La Maddalena on the island of the same name. Otherwise, there are moorings on a few islands and the area is particularly suitable for those who enjoy beautiful anchorages. This also applies to the Lavezzi Islands, which belong to Corsica.

TERRITORY CHARACTERISTICS

The area with its fantastic beaches, sometimes rounded rock formations, sometimes wildly rugged, is without question one of the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean. The lovely landscape of the Costa Smeralda is famous and has magically attracted tourists and the super-rich with their mega yachts for decades. Crews usually start on the mainland and then go island hopping at its finest to the offshore islands of the Maddalena archipelago, whose beaches and cosy bays with crystal-clear, turquoise water (hence the name "Emerald Coast") invite you to swim. The area is a real anchoring paradise. It also offers an Italian lifestyle and a beautiful, surprisingly green, slightly mountainous landscape with spectacular rock formations. As large parts of the offshore islands are a nature reserve, the area has not been spoilt by too much development, despite being very busy in summer. The distances to the next bay, the next harbour are short, even from Sardinia's north side to Corsica it is less than ten nautical miles. If you want to, it only takes two or three hours to sail to the next attractive bay.

However, the area is not considered easy for two reasons: firstly, the coast is lined with many shallows and rocks that require careful navigation. And secondly, the strait between Sardinia and Corsica is a notorious wind gust, especially when a strong mistral is blowing, which happens regularly even in midsummer and can last for several days. It is therefore not necessarily a destination for beginners, especially in spring and autumn.

Sailing off Sardinia is perfectly rounded off by the change of area to the French neighbour. Corsica and the Lavezzi Islands are just as much an anchorage paradise as the islands on the Italian side. Many crews like to use the trip for a detour to Bonifacio, the harbour spectacularly situated in a crevice, above which the fortified historic old town towers. It is almost like entering a fjord and, once you have climbed to the top, you have an incredible view. Even just a week's charter is enough for this detour, but there is no doubt that Sardinia offers enough destinations for a fortnight, and a large number of sailors regularly return.

Corsica and Sardinia yacht charter itinerary

Offshore lie quiet, rocky islands in a sapphire sea, while inland you’ll discover wild, mountainous landscapes of vineyards and wildflowers.

Here’s an example 7-day itinerary of what you might experience on charter in Corsica and Sardinia. 

Day 1: Bonifacio to Roccapina (13 miles)

You’ll board the yacht in Bonifacio Harbour at 12pm, where the crew will get you acquainted with the yacht and get you settled into your staterooms. You’ll then meet at the upper deck dining table, and enjoy the stunning transit through the towering cliffs of Bonafacio as you enjoy a gourmet lunch. 

A short cruise later, you’ll arrive at Roccapina, a breathtaking anchorage framed by the rocky hills of the Grand Valicino region; a quiet, sparsely populated corner of Corsica’s southeast. The water here is an almost shocking shade of aquamarine, with clarity so perfect you can see the yac

ht’s shadow on the seafloor far below. The captain will drop anchor, and you’ll spend an idyllic afternoon swimming in the sunlit waters, walking along the powder-soft beach, and perhaps taking a hike through the pine forest into the rocky hills, where giant boulders and ancient castles overlook the coast. 

As evening falls across the hills, enjoy canapes and champagne on the sundeck, before sitting down at the dinner table for a gastronomic feast, water turning silver all around. Your yacht will remain at anchor at Roccapina overnight.

Day 2: Roccapina to Cavalló Island  (20 miles) 

After breakfast and a swim, the captain will weigh anchor and get underway for Cavallo Island, the only inhabited island in the Lavezzi Archipelago. Privately owned and entirely car-free, this tiny island has the kind of low-key exclusivity and secrecy that means it flies under the radar of conventional tourism. Cavallo has a shocking beauty, with incredible rock formations rearing up over wild beaches and a lapis lazuli sea. Sandy tracks wind through the maquis scrub, which sends up a heady scent of lavender, rosemary, thyme and mint as it warms under the Mediterranean sun. Breathe deep, for this is the smell of Corsica!

When you arrive, the deck crew will put up the waterslide and launch the toys, before you take the tender into the Shore Club for an elegant lunch at their beach club restaurant. Afterwards, relax a spell on the sunbeds and swim in the perfect rock lagoon. 

Enjoy dinner at anchor, before heading to the sundeck to watch a movie on the yacht’s alfresco cinema, or relax in the Jacuzzi under the stars. 

Day 3  Cavallò Island — Budelli Island: 7. 5 miles / PortoMassimo Harbor (Maddalena Island)

Wake up to look out upon the astonishing beauty of Cavallo. Start your day with a dive off the swim platform or a leisurely beach walk before sitting down to a splendid breakfast feast. You’ll then get underway for Budelli Island in the Maddalena Islands, your first stop in Sardinia. 

Budelli Island is completely uninhabited, a stunning island where red rocks contrast vividly with the turquoise sea. There are white sand beaches on the island, but the most magical beach is Spiaggia Rosa, where pale pink sands slope gently into a crystal clear sea. Unfortunately, you cannot visit the beach as it is protected, but you can take a walk on the island and look upon its pink sands from several vantage points above the beach. 

Pass a day at anchor in this heavenly place, swimming, picnicking on the beach, and walking the paths that crisscross the island. In the late afternoon, the captain will move the yacht to Marine di Porto Massimo on Maddalena Island, where you can explore the town and enjoy the bustling energy in high summer. 

Day 4: PortoMassimo to Grande Pevero (9,5 miles) / Porto Cervo

Today you’ll arrive on the Sardinian mainland, where your first stop is at Grande Pevero on the Emerald Coast. This exquisite white-sand beach curves around a half-moon bay, and is known as one of the most glamorous beaches in the Mediterranean. If you want to stretch your legs, take a walk through the juniper trees at the back of the beach to discover secluded little coves, or play a round of golf at the nearby Pevero Golf Club.

For lunch, you could dine on lobster salad in a garden courtyard at the rather splendid Ristorante Pendrinelli in Porto Cervo, or remain on the yacht, enjoying a meal with a view of the Li Nibana islets. 

In the afternoon, explore Porto Cervo to shop the boutiques, or head to the ultra-chic White Beach Club to spend the afternoon relaxing on sunbeds and drinking cocktails by the Tyrrhenian Sea. The hottest table in town for dinner, as always, is the Cala di Volpe Restaurant, but for something different, dine at one of Porto Cervo’s Michelin-recommended restaurants — Pedri Garden for Italian, ConFusion for contemporary, or Finger’s Porto Cervo for modern Japanese. After dinner, start your evening at Bar Il Portico before heading to the legendary Billionaire Club or Phi Beach. 

The yacht can either remain at anchor overnight, or the captain will move the yacht into Porto Cervo so you can simply step aboard after your evening ashore. 

Day 5: Gulf Pevero — Gulf of Marinella : 7.5 miles/Porto Rotondo

The captain will move the yacht to the Gulf of Marinella, a quiet stretch of coast at the far end of the Costa Smeralda. Sleep late and enjoy a long brunch on deck, refreshing any tired heads with a swim off the yacht.  

As all days on a yacht charter, what you do today is up to you. Unsurprisingly, there are some superb beaches to choose from. Spiaggia de Bahas is famous for water sports and diving, the small cove of Cala Moresca has lovely views of Figarola Island, and Cala Sabina is quieter and more remote.

If you’d prefer to do a bit of exploring, head into the charming town of Porto Rotondo to shop, visit the beautiful Chiesa San Lorenzo church, and take a coffee in the central Piazzetta San Marco and watch the locals go about their lives in this splendid place. 

If you would rather a day at a beach club, The Bay Porto Rotondo at Punta Asfodeli is a fabulous place to spend a lazy afternoon — and if you like, you can stay there through the evening, enjoying the ambience and views as the energy picks up towards sunset and DJs play long into the night. 

For dinner, head into Porto Rotondo to dine at the elegant  Enoteca da Giovannino, the wonderfully authentic La Tavernetta, or Bambusa on the marina. 

Day 6: From Gulf of Marinella to Tavolara island 12.5 miles

Begin your day with a walk and a coffee in Porto Rotondo’s charming Piazzetta San Marco. Today, the yacht will cruise to Tavolara Island, a spectacular mountainous outcrop. Once its own kingdom and ruled by the Bartoleoni family, Tavolara is rich in history, and you can even visit the royal family’s graves in a tiny cemetery behind the beach. 

The island is part of a marine park, and snorkelers will delight in the vibrant marine life along the rocky coastline, while scuba divers will discover shipwrecks and archaeological artefacts at dive sites at Teddja Liscia, Secca del Papa, Molara and Molarotto. 

Want to take it easy? Spend a day on Spalmatore di Terra beach, with its magnificent view of the massif rising up overhead. Want to burn off some energy? Experienced hikers (who don’t mind a bit of rappelling) can hike the massif, enjoying the spectacular views across the Emerald Coast and out to the distant Maddalena Islands. For a bit of culture, Tavolara also hosts a Film Festival in mid-July. For lunch off the boat, you might like to dine at Da Tonino, which is run by the Bartoleoni family, descendents of the former rulers of the island.

Stay at anchor overnight, dining with the view of the mountain as the sun sets on your last evening on charter. 

Day 7: Tavalora to Marina di Olbia

Wake on your last day, watching the reflections of the water play across your ceiling, thinking about all the wonderful places you’ve seen on your luxury yacht charter Italy. Eat breakfast at anchor, and enjoy a final swim or walk on the beach. The yacht will then cruise to Marina di Olbia, where you will disembark at 12pm. The captain will accompany you to the nearby airport to bid you farewell.
