Where do I start...well, first of all I have been yachting with Ultimate YachtLife Charters since 2017 shortly after I moved to Florida. The owner of this fleet keeps these boats in top condition, and also keeps sea bobs and a huge lily pad to have fun on your trip. He also chooses the most knowledgeable, safe, and laid back captains to host your experience. If you aren't from here I can't recommend enough to take a look at Tampa Bay from the water like this. It is always a memorable time and totally worth the money. Don't waste it on jet skis or silly boat tours. This is truly the best way to experience Tampa Bay, in affordable luxury.

I always have a great time at Shane's yacht. He is an excellent captain, and he always makes sure everyone has an awesome time. The yacht is very spacious, comfortable, and was recently renovated. Shane is an experienced captain that knows all the cool spots around the Tampa Bay area. I have done several Sunday trips to different islands around St Pete. However, my favorite time was when we did a Wednesday sunset cruise that included sushi, cheese platter, and wine. The views were gorgeous, food was delicious, and the group was fun and welcoming. I highly recommend you treat yourself to an amazing day or weekend at Shane's yacht. Gather your friends and family and take them with you You will not be disappointed!

Jamie Ryer "Captain Jacques"

I have been navigating the US waters for nearly 15 years beginning in San Francisco bay where I purchased my first vessel, a 24 foot Bayliner, “The Marmallee I” named after my late sister Marmallee. I quickly outgrew this and acquired a 34 foot Rinker which I named The Marmallee II since I didn’t even have my first vessel for a year!

In addition to myself, all charters are Captained by a licensed USCG Captain and navigate completely under USCG regulations. We keep all required safety gear and then some on board including GPS tracking, Satellite SOS emergency transponders, life vests, first aid supplies, life raft for 8, additional inflatable rafts, night vision camera, XM satellite weather and more, above and beyond what is required to ensure a safe and memorable charter.  I am delighted to add this new custom upgraded 2022 Jenneau 1095 NC Fly to my yachting portfolio. Join me and my crew as we make memories and you become a part of the La Vie en Bleu family.

What people are saying

“Canvas Yacht Charters and Doug are a pleasure to work with. Doug’s follow-up skills are remarkable and attention to detail are bar none. I very rarely leave reviews, but I can, without a doubt, recommend Canvas and Doug to everyone I know. Thanks again D!”
“We recently celebrated our 25th anniversary with three other couples, our dearest friends, on a week-long sailing charter. The trip was arranged by Doug Tibbs at Canvas Yacht Charters, and his assistance was invaluable every step of the way. He listened to our dreams for the trip, the things we were really hoping for and things we wanted to avoid, non-negotiates and crazy ideas, and he filtered them all to present us with several charter options, any one of which would have been wonderful, but we ended up on Ghost. Doug’s attention didn’t stop with the booking. He made sure we were kept aware of various important deadlines, including changes related to covid, connected us with the crew and conveyed to them all our preferences, and was available throughout to answer our big and small questions. This was truly the trip of a lifetime for every one of us onboard—the boat, the crew, the sailing, the food, the adventure. So many thanks to Doug for his care to make it everything we dreamed it could be—and we are already hoping to plan a repeat trip for next year!”
“It’s not often that I end up leaving a review for a service I didn’t end up booking, but the super customer service I received from Heather at Starrluxe definitely merits noting. From the first step in the process, she was helpful, professional, and extremely accommodating despite a difficult itinerary and an expedited time frame. She provided excellent options and went out of her way to address our every requirement. I deeply regret that our travel plans changed and we weren’t able to finalize our charter, but I greatly look forward to working with Starrluxe again in the future. Highly recommend!”
“Enjoyed working with Doug. He was attentive to our needs/desires. Got us a great boat with a great crew. He even got us a price reduction. I will look forward to working with him again.”
“Doug and his team helped us book a trip in two days for the following week. Great communications and expectation setting, which helped make the trip successful. We will recommend them to family and friends for their trips. -Cheers, John”

With such a unique and memorable experience, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the essential yacht charter rules to ensure smooth sailing and make the most out of your luxurious getaway.

Certain standards have been established throughout the yachting industry to ensure the safety and well-being of guests, crew, and the yacht itself. By adhering to these guidelines, you can confidently enjoy your time aboard, provide an ideal working environment for the crew, and abide by international maritime laws.

In this article, we will outline 15 essential yacht charter rules you should know, from respecting the crew’s authority to understanding proper etiquette when in port. By following these recommendations, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the captivating world of luxury yacht charters and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones. When it comes to Tampa Bay, Florida Yacht Life is dedicated to providing exceptional experiences that adhere to these essential rules, ensuring that every charter is both luxurious and memorable.

Understanding Charter Types

When planning a yacht charter, it is crucial to be familiar with the different types of charters available. This section will provide a brief overview of two primary yacht charter types:  Bareboat Charters  and  Skippered Charters .

Bareboat Charters

A  bareboat charter  refers to a yacht charter where the client rents the boat without a hired crew. The client assumes full responsibility for the vessel, including navigation, maintenance, and overall safety.

This charter type is suitable for experienced sailors, as proficiency in yacht handling and navigation are prerequisites. The hirer must present evidence of sailing qualifications and experience, typically in the form of a valid sailing license.

Advantages of Bareboat Charters:

  • Flexibility:  Clients have complete control over their itinerary, sail routes, and duration of stops.
  • Price:  Bareboat charters are generally more cost-effective, as clients are not hiring a professional crew.
  • Privacy:  Clients enjoy increased privacy without the presence of hired crew members.

Skippered Charters

In a skippered charter, the hirer rents a yacht with a professional skipper on board. This type of charter offers additional guidance and yacht handling expertise to clients who may have limited experience or simply prefer a more relaxed sailing vacation. When it comes to yacht charter Tampa , this option provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals to explore the stunning waters of the Tampa Bay area with the assurance of a skilled skipper at the helm.

The hired skipper assumes the responsibility of vessel management, allowing clients to focus on enjoying their travel experience.

Advantages of Skippered Charters:

  • Expert Assistance:  A professional skipper has extensive knowledge of the local area, including points of interest, hidden gems, and the safest routes.
  • Safety:   A skippered charter provides the added security of a professional, certified captain who is responsible for all aspects of the yacht’s safety and navigation.
  • Less Stress:  Clients can benefit from a more relaxed sailing experience, placing their trust in an experienced skipper.

To summarize, choosing the appropriate yacht charter type largely depends on the client’s experience, sailing qualifications, and desired level of control over the yacht and itinerary. Both bareboat and skippered charters offer unique advantages, and understanding these options can help clients make an informed decision for their perfect yachting experience.

Safety and Regulations

When chartering a yacht, it is essential to prioritize safety and adhere to the regulations in place. This section will explore the importance of safety equipment and navigational rules while on a yacht charter.

Safety Equipment

Yacht charter operators must ensure that their vessels are equipped with all essential safety equipment. The following list highlights some of the items that should be on board:

  • Lifejackets : Available for each passenger, adjusted to fit based on their size and weight.
  • Life Rafts : In case of an emergency, life rafts are imperative. They should be inspected and maintained regularly.
  • Fire Extinguishers : Different types of fire extinguishers should be readily available on the yacht, targeting various fire categories (A, B, C, etc.).
  • First Aid Kit : A well-stocked first aid kit should be aboard, catering to common injuries and ailments.
  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) : Activated in distress situations, the EPIRB sends a signal to rescue services with information about the vessel’s location.

Additionally, it is crucial for crew members and passengers to be familiar with the location and proper use of the safety equipment.

Navigational Rules

Understanding  the  navigational  regulations,  also  referred  to  as  the  “rules  of  the  road,”  is  necessary  for  navigating  a  yacht. These  regulations  support  the  preservation  of  maritime  safety  by  preventing  collisions. Key navigational rules that yacht charterers should be aware of are:

  • Right of Way : Understand which vessel has the right of way in different situations.
  • Speed Restrictions : Abide by speed limits, especially in areas near other vessels, ports, or marine life.
  • International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) : These international maritime regulations, enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), should be followed by all yachts. Familiarize yourself with its content, including standard signaling, lights, and shapes.
  • Charts and Aids : Always use updated charts and regularly monitor navigational aids (buoys, beacons, etc.) to avoid hazards and follow designated routes.
  • Communication : Efficient communication between the crew and other vessels is integral to ensuring smooth and safe navigation.

By being mindful of these safety and regulatory guidelines, yacht charterers can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Financial Considerations

When planning a yacht charter, it is essential to understand the financial aspects involved in the process. In this section, we will discuss the main financial considerations, including charter costs and insurance and liability.

Charter Costs

Charter costs can vary significantly depending on factors such as the yacht’s size, age, destination, and boarding facilities. It is crucial to understand the primary components of charter costs:

  • Base price : This is the upfront cost of renting the yacht, usually quoted on a weekly basis. It typically covers yacht and crew expenses but does not include extras such as food, fuel, and docking fees.
  • APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) : This is an additional fee, usually a percentage of the base price (approximately 20-30%), which covers the operational costs of the charter, such as fuel, food, and port fees. At the end of the trip, any remaining APA balance is refunded to the client.
  • Gratuities : It is customary to tip the yacht crew (usually around 10-20% of the base price) upon completion of the charter.

By researching and comparing different yacht options, you can find the best charter option within your budget.

Insurance and Liability

There  are  several  hazards  associated  with  yacht  charters,  therefore  you  need  to  be  sure  you  have  enough  financial  protection. There  are  two  primary  categories  of  insurance  to  think  about:

  • Yacht insurance : The yacht owner should have insurance that covers the vessel, including hull and machinery coverage, as well as protection and indemnity (P&I) coverage. Before booking a charter, ask for proof of insurance from the yacht owner to ensure it is up-to-date and comprehensive.
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance : Covers cancellation costs due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, or unforeseen events.
  • Medical and Accident Coverage : Covers medical expenses and emergency evacuation in case of an accident during the trip.
  • Personal Effects Insurance : Protects against the loss or damage of your personal belongings during the charter.

By understanding and addressing the financial aspects of yacht chartering, you can help ensure a smooth and worry-free trip.

Respect for Environment

Yacht charters offer an incredible experience to explore the beauty of oceans and coastlines. This section will discuss the importance of respecting the environment whilst enjoying a yacht charter.

Environmental Protection

When chartering a yacht, it is crucial to be aware of the  marine ecosystem . The ocean houses diverse flora and fauna, which can be fragile and require protection.

  • Avoid anchoring in sensitive areas such as  coral reefs  and  seagrass beds . Instead, use mooring buoys or designated anchorages.
  • Maintain a safe distance from  marine life  such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles. Federal regulations might require specific distances to be observed.
  • Be mindful of the use of  sunscreen,  as certain chemicals can harm coral reefs. Opt for  reef-safe sunscreens  that are biodegradable and eco-friendly.
  • When participating in water activities like snorkeling or diving, avoid touching marine life, as it can negatively impact their natural behavior.

Waste Management

Proper waste management in your yacht charter is essential to minimizing the environmental impact of your trip.

Follow these tips to minimize waste and ensure sustainable yacht charter practices:

  • Minimize single-use plastic : Bring reusable water bottles, bags, and containers, and avoid using plastic cutlery.
  • Recycling : Separate and store recyclable materials such as glass, plastic, paper, and aluminum cans. Dispose of them in designated recycling facilities once ashore.
  • Biodegradable products : Use eco-friendly and biodegradable cleaning products and toiletries to minimize pollution.
  • Energy conservation : Turn off lights, appliances, and air conditioning when not in use. Make use of natural daylight and airflow.
  • Proper waste disposal : Dispose of trash and waste in appropriate onshore facilities. Never throw trash or waste overboard.

By following these rules and guidelines, you can ensure a memorable and responsible yacht charter experience, while preserving the beauty and health of the marine environment for future generations to enjoy.

Crew Etiquette and Tipping

When chartering a yacht, it’s essential to treat the crew with  respect  and adhere to proper yacht etiquette. The crew works tirelessly to ensure your trip is enjoyable, so be kind, patient, and considerate. Here are a few important guidelines to follow regarding crew etiquette and tipping.

  • Politeness:  Always address the crew using their titles (Captain, First Mate, etc.) or their first names. Maintain a polite and respectful demeanor during your interactions.
  • Following instructions:  The crew is responsible for your safety on board. It’s important to follow their instructions, especially during safety drills and when maneuvering the yacht.
  • Crew quarters:  Avoid going into crew quarters unless invited. The crew needs their privacy, and it’s best to respect their space.
  • Meal requests:  Inform the chef ahead of time about any dietary restrictions or preferences you may have. It’s also essential to communicate any changes to your meal plans.
Crew Member Percentage of Total Tip
Captain 20% – 25%
Chef 15% – 20%
Engineer/Mate 10% – 15%
Other crew members 5% – 10%

It’s best to give the entire tip to the captain, who will distribute it among the crew members according to their roles and responsibilities.

In conclusion, maintaining proper crew etiquette and tipping helps create a harmonious and enjoyable yacht charter experience. You can thank the yacht’s crew for their hard work and dedication by being polite, paying according to the rules, and following their directions. When experiencing Florida Yacht Life , these considerations contribute to a memorable and seamless luxury charter experience.

Live Aboard Charters: Multi-Days & Nights

How to charter a luxury yacht for multi-days or a “live aboard”.

Our Cabo Yacht Life Live Aboard yacht charters guide below outlines the process of chartering a luxury yacht and details the costs involved. Yachts can be booked for several days and nights with 5-star service standards. It should cover everything you need to know about luxury yacht charter. However, if you have any further questions, please  contact us.

How Do I Charter a Live Aboard Yacht?

There are a few key steps you need to follow when thinking about booking luxury Live Aboard yacht charters:

  • Think about where you want to go around Los Cabos, La Paz, or Baja California Sur.
  • Narrow down your requirements. What is your budget? How many people do you want to invite? Do you want adventure, romance or both?
  • Get an idea of the type of yachts you like.
  • Let the VIP booking expert find you the most suitable yachts, and pick your favorite.
  • Start planning: the booking professional will arrange your itinerary and any other details.

How Much Does It Cost for Live Aboard Yacht Charters?

You’ll usually see two rates for charter yachts: the high season and low season rate. But that’s not all that you need to budget for. You need to factor in:

  • The running costs of the charter, which usually ends up being 25-30% of the charter depending on your group and itinerary.
  • It’s called the Advanced Provisioning Allowance.
  • IVA or local cruising taxes, that can vary from 0% to 22%.
  • Delivery costs and/or redelivery cost, if you want to charter the vessel away from her home port area of Cabo San Lucas or far from current bookings in place. This doesn’t always apply, so check with our VIP Live Aboard professional at [email protected] .
  • A security deposit. This is mainly requested if an event is part of Live Aboard yacht charters standard. However, depending on the make-up of the group, we will require this on the contract due to high demand.
  • A crew tip is offered at your discretion but in planning the overall cost, this is something to consider. We explain tips in more detail below.

What is the Advanced Provisioning Allowance?

Advanced provisioning allowance (APA) is the extra fee that you pay in advance to cover the cost of provisions for Live Aboard yacht charters. It helps to think of the advanced provisioning allowance as like opening a petty cash account for your captain and chef, because it’s the simplest way of tracking charter expenses while you’re on board.

The APA allows the Captain and Crew to fully prepare and customize the experience to exactly how you want to live on board. A “preference sheet” will be prepared in detail between you and your bookings professional and sent to the Captain in good time for him to prepare the yacht for your arrival.

The captain will oversee all the purchases made before and during your charter. He will be responsible for ensuring the crew stay within budget and will provide receipts and expense accounts upon request. All expenses will be charged at cost and at the end of your charter you’ll receive an itemized breakdown of all expenditures.

FAQs: Live Aboard Yacht Charters Etiquette

How should I interact with the crew?

The crew are valued employees, ensuring Live Aboard yacht charters are run safely, operates smoothly and that service levels are optimized for you and your guests.

Can I invite friends on the yacht?

You’re encouraged to entertain guests during your charter, but please let the bookings expert know if you’re thinking about inviting friends on board. If you give the crew plenty of time to plan, you’ll have the very best experience.

Can I hold a party on board?

Some of our Live Aboard yacht charters are able to hold events on board, but they will need to adhere to regulations as to how many guests can be there at any one time. The yacht may request a security deposit, in case of any damage caused during the charter.

The number of guests for events varies with the size of yacht, flag registry rules, insurance levels and our company’s comfort level.

Can I bring staff in addition to my guests to stay on board?

Any essential staff such as nannies or physicians may be accommodated if the yacht has suitable cabins available for them. This is requested on a case-by-case basis. The yacht crew will ensure that the staff are given any necessary safety training and advise them on how service works on the yacht.

FAQs: Helpful Advice

Can I bring my pet?

Our Live Aboard yacht charters are not set up to accommodate pets on any charters.

What happens while the crew clean?

The crew are very skilled at making sure everything is shipshape. However, they always appreciate it when guests take their morning coffee on the sundeck, for example, as it gives them a chance to make sure your stateroom is made up and ready.

What happens if I have a problem?

Every member of the crew wants you to have the very best experience. But if you have any questions or concerns, a quick chat with the Captain is the best thing to do.

Are any areas off-limits?

Please don’t enter the crew areas without permission. The Captain or host/hostess will give you a safety briefing upon embarkation, which will go over how to stay safe on board. For your own safety, take the time to familiarize yourself with all the information provided about lifejackets and the lifeboat drill.

Do I have to take my shoes off?

Please make sure you’re barefoot or wearing socks during the charter or bring slippers. Decks are notoriously fragile and dents and scuffs on the well-polished wood or stains on carpets are a big no-no. Similarly, street shoes can damage a yacht’s antique carpets or custom flooring. Our crews will provide a shoe basket at the end of the gangway to keep your favorite shoes safe.

What luggage should I use?

Soft luggage that can be easily folded up and stowed away is the best option for packing. That’s because although guest staterooms are beautifully designed, storage is always an issue. Hardshell luggage is difficult to store at the best of times.

FAQs: Preference Sheet

What is a preference sheet?

A preference sheet is a form you fill out to outline your preferences for all Live Aboard yacht charters. It’s your opportunity to let the crew know about any special requirements you might have for your charter. From the sleeping arrangements for your party to your favorite dessert to meals to water activities, the preference sheet will help the crew create an unforgettable holiday.

When do I have to fill it out the preference sheet?

You’ll get the preference sheet in advance of your charter with your Live Aboard yacht charters booking expert . Please fill it in as soon as you can, and return it to the Cabo Yacht Life booking department approximately 30 days (at the latest) before you embark.

FAQs: Advance Provisioning Allowance

Where and when do I need to pay the APA?

The APA of 30% is due at the same time as your final charter payment, so roughly one month before you set sail. The transfer is made directly to Cabo Yacht Life so you’re in the best of hands. Your Live Aboard yacht charters bookings professional will provide all the necessary bank details ahead of time.

What happens if the APA doesn’t cover all expenses?

Live Aboard yacht charters cost estimation is fairly accurate, but there’s always a chance that you might decide to blow the budget while at sea. Should your outgoings exceed the initial payment, you can top up the APA in cash while you’re on board, or by wire transfer to the Cabo Yacht Life U.S. bank account or other payment options. The captain will keep you updated throughout the trip, and if there are any outstanding costs, you’ll need to settle up before disembarking.

What if we don’t use the full APA?

If there’s any credit remaining on the APA account at the end of the charter, the captain will communicate with the bookings and accounting departments to issue a refund. You will receive the outstanding balance after you leave the yacht by wire transfer or your preferred method within five working days after the charter.

Does the APA apply to all Live Aboard charters?

Yes. When it comes to luxury Live Aboard yacht charters, the APA is usually applied as standard. Simple and straightforward, the APA is the easiest way to keep track of your outgoings while at sea.

FAQs: Child Safety

What should I look out for?

Just ask your Live Aboard booking agent to check with the captain and crew before reserving your yacht and make sure that you mention all special requirements.

Can the crew babysit?

If you need someone to babysit, it’s advised that you bring a nanny on board with you. While the crew are willing to go the extra mile to entertain younger charter guests, they will be too busy to babysit during your charter.

FAQs: Water Toys

Can I use every water toy?

The water toys are there for you to enjoy, but some may need special training or tips prior such as the Sea Bobs. It’s best to check with the Captain first if you’re unsure. Keep in mind that nearly every water toy, water activity, and location can be programmed in advance with your VIP Live Aboard booking professional .

Are the water toys easy to use?

Most of the yacht toys are straightforward and self-explanatory. But if you’ve never used a Sea Bob or Wave Runner, for example, ask the crew to show you how it works before you head out to sea. They’ll be more than happy to assist.

Do I need a lifejacket?

You should always wear a lifejacket when using the toys. As tempting as it might be to jump straight onto the nearest Wave Runner or Sea Bob, safety first is definitely key. The crew will be happy to provide life jackets in a range of sizes to keep everyone safe and sound out on the water.

FAQs: Tipping

How do I tip the charter crew?

Give the tip to the captain. He will take care of dividing it between the crew members including those who work behind the scenes. If you feel that any member of the crew has gone above and beyond the call of duty, just let him know.

What are the tipping guidelines?

The tipping policy guidelines have been accepted as standard by most of the Live Aboard yacht charters industry. The guidelines say a tip should be around 15% of your charter fee.

“Absolute Perfection!” From start to finish, our experience with this organization was absolutely perfect. They were professional, polite, friendly, accommodating and they facilitated an  amazing   experience ! We booked a 4 hour sunset trip to the arch, and surrounding areas for 5 people. With 4 young women, you can only imagine how many photos we wanted to take. Janett assisted us by taking SO many wonderful photos, telling us how to pose, capturing our best angles and all the while supplying us with the perfect drinks to keep the party going! Captain Juan was a gentleman, and clearly knew how to navigate to the best spots around. They had a stand up paddle board for us to use, as well as different things to float on in the water. Janett provided us with some excellent food that kept us energized for all the fun! The entire trip with Cabo Yacht Life was a delight, and for any future trips I may take to Cabo, they would be my go to activity! — Trip Advisor, 5-stars
“Amazing charter experience!” From the moment I inquired until we stepped off the boat I received the most amazing service. Joseph was so accommodating especially because there was a hurricane on my initial charter date. He made sure to communicate after the storm and made sure to get us out on the boat the next day, safely might I add. When we got to the boat the experience was so amazing. Eva and Juan were both so friendly and attentive. Eva took some amazing pictures of my friends and I. Unfortunately, several of us became motion sick however, they immediately accommodated us and made sure we were good. The boat was clean and I still enjoyed myself. Eva even used her phone for the music we liked to ensure I as the birthday girl could use my phone for pictures and videos. I would highly recommend you use them for your private charter needs. — Trip Advisor, 5-stars

'Abrosexual' identity takes hold as more people embrace the term:...

Breaking news, i lived ‘below deck’ on a luxury yacht — here’s what you need to know.

Tahiti, St. Thomas and the French Riviera — I’ve yachted in all of these exotic locales, albeit from the comfort of my couch. And, millions of Americans are in the same boat.

In 2013, “Below Deck,” introduced the masses to the most glamorous mode of traveling: yachting. Since then, it’s become a Bravo mainstay with Season 9 of “Below Deck Mediterranean’’ premiering in June.

But how real is the reality show? I spent five nights on a yacht in Croatia to find out.

A woman in a bikini standing on the deck of the 'Adriatic Escape' boat, ready to experience reality TV drama on the high seas in Maldives.

A tip on tipping

My suitcase wasn’t bursting with Benjamins. An agency at your final destination provides cash for the crew’s tip money. While you’re expected to tip $30,000 for a two-night cruise on “Below Deck,” in real life you only have to tip 10% to 15% of your charter fee. That’s about $10,000 for a two-night cruise on a 180-foot charter yacht like Mustique (from $250,000 a week), which stars in the new season.

According to Zvonimir Androić, president of the yacht charter company Via Croatia, more often than not, the tip comes from what’s left over after provisioning.

So, shun the Dom Pérignon and skip the beluga caviar, and you’ll have money to spare.

What’s up, dock?

A luxury yacht, named Adriatic Escape, docked at Split Marina with a weekly rental price of US$52,800

In real life, “Below Deck’s” favorite commercial-break cliff-hanger isn’t nearly as dramatic. Docking in our yacht, Via Croatia’s five-cabin, 100-foot Adriatic Escape (from $52,800 a week), was breezy.

I asked the crew if they hated setting up the slide — a tortuous, Herculean task if you believe what you see on TV.

“It’s not that bad,” a twentysomething Croatian deckhand, as cute as his on-screen counterparts, told me. “That said, we’re definitely not sad if you don’t ask for it.”

Play it cool

Barbie Pascual arranging a table on the set of Below Deck Season 11.

Despite being served meat on more than one occasion, my vegetarian co-guests on board weren’t divas when it came to cuisine — a major source of chef-related stress on the show.

Tantrums aren’t the norm Barbie Pascual, the “Below Deck” stewardess famous for putting up with former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin’s demands for the perfect Diet Coke in the “Real Housewives of Grenada” episode, tells me. “Guests know they are being filmed so their reactions are more extreme than they’d be if the cameras weren’t around,” she says.

Pascual’s biggest tip for first-time yachters? Don’t go skinny dipping, like they do on the show, after dark.

“People forget about currents, sharks, etc.,” she says. “Jumping in the water should always be with the captain’s consent!”

Our humorless Croatian yacht captain was a far cry from “Below Deck Mediterranean’s” affable Captain Sandy Yawn. I think we only saw him twice over the course of four days, and he definitely didn’t join us for dinner.

That was fine by us because the stews and deckhands were always handy with anything we needed — including at chat.

Asking for it

A group of people on the Adriatic Escape boat, available for weekly rent at $52,800

“No” is a word you’ll never hear on a yacht, unless there is a safety issue, Pascual says.

While we didn’t ask our crew to do a striptease or decorate for ‘70s night (two recurring requests on the show), out-there demands aren’t out of the question, as long as you’re willing to pay for it.

For example, Via Croatia is currently retrofitting one of its multimillion-dollar superyachts for an upcoming charter booked by a multigenerational Jewish family from Florida.

“In addition to paying the charter fee, the client is literally buying everything new: pots, pans, silverware, et cetera,” said Androić. “They’re even spending $30,000 on a new tender for the elderly mother-in-law.”

Now, I’m no reality show producer, but a picky primary trying to keep his wife, her elderly mom and their kosher kids happy at sea has the makings of an Emmy Award-winning episode.

Yachting on a budget

Agape Rose, an ultra luxury mini cruiser yacht with various amenities, sailing on Croatia's Adriatic coast.

Charters are cheapest at the beginning and end of a destination’s season. Via Croatia’s yuppiest yacht, the 160-foot, 12-cabin Agape Rose , fetches $200,000 a week in July and August. But it’s just $164,000 a week in April and October. Divide that by 24 of your closest friends and family and it’s just $6,800 a person.

If that’s still too much, consider booking a yacht club suite on one of MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean voyages.

Sure, you’ll be on a cruise liner, but for $1,659 a person you’ll be treated to seven nights of private butler service with a private pool and restaurant that the pleb passengers don’t even know exists.

Inside the Shocking Sicily Yacht Tragedy: 7 People Dead After Rare Luxury Boat Disaster

There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead.

Nobody was trying to reach the lowest depths of the ocean or otherwise test the boundaries of human endurance .

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter  of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner , the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco , head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera  Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told  La Repubblica , per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch —"Britain's Bill Gates ," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah  to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain , the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer —who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer , as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo , a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo , a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo . None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas .

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

How sinking of luxury yacht off Sicily unfolded

yacht life charters

One man has died and six people are missing after a luxury yacht sank in freak weather conditions off the coast of Sicily.

The 56m British-flagged Bayesian was carrying 22 people - 12 passengers and 10 crew - when a heavy storm that created waterspouts struck early on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued and a search operation for those unaccounted for - who include the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch - is continuing.

Here is what we know about the tragedy so far and how it unfolded.

What happened to the yacht?

Map of Porticello and Palermo in Sicily

The Bayesian was struck by a sudden and powerful storm in the early hours of Monday morning, witnesses say.

It was reportedly anchored to the sea bed outside the harbour at Porticello, a small fishing village to the east of Palermo, when what the Italian coastguard described as a "violent storm" hit.

The storm was so fierce that it caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air and mist, to appear over the sea.

The vessel disappeared beneath the water at about 05:00 local time (04:00 BST).

A doctor treating survivors said the ship "capsized within a few minutes".

Witnesses told Italian news agency Ansa that the Bayesian’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the 72m (236ft) aluminium mast to break in half and the ship to lose its balance and sink.

However, divers on the search and rescue team have said the ship was "practically intact" on the seabed, raising questions as to whether the mast was broken.

The ship's unusually tall mast may have contributed to its sinking, according to Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the mast acted almost like a sail in the strong wind "especially with it being so high".

The extreme winds could have caught the mast and pushed the yacht over, he said.

Karsten Borner, captain of a nearby boat, said after the storm had passed, the crew noticed the yacht that had been behind them had disappeared.

"We saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position, and we found this life raft drifting," he told Reuters.

His crew took on board some survivors, including three who were seriously injured.

Another witness, Fabio Cefalù, captain of a trawler, said he was about to go out on a fishing trip when he saw flashes of lightning so he stayed in the harbour.

"At about 04:15 we saw a flare in the sea," he said, according to the EVN news agency reports.

"We waited for this waterspout to pass. After 10 minutes we went out to the sea and we saw cushions and all the rest of the boat [that had sunk], and everything which was on the deck, at sea. However, we did not see any people in the sea.”

Another fisherman described seeing the yacht sinking "with my own eyes".

Speaking to the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia, the witness said he was at home when the tornado hit.

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very big," he said.

Shortly afterwards he went down to the Santa Nicolicchia bay in Porticello to get a better look at what was happening.

He added: "The boat was still floating, then all of a sudden it disappeared. I saw it sinking with my own eyes."

One of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Golunski, told Italian newspaper La Repubblica how she held up her one-year-old daughter Sofia to stop her from drowning.

She said the two of them and her partner James survived only because they were up on deck when the yacht sank.

They were woken by “thunder, lightning and waves that made our boat dance”, and it felt like "the end of the world" before they were thrown into the water.

Charlotte said: "For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea, then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves."

She added: "I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

What is the latest with the search?

Six passengers remain missing and the Palermo coastguard says the search and rescue operation is continuing "incessantly".

The search began on Monday and specialist divers have been working at the site since early on Tuesday morning.

One diver told Italian media the yacht was "practically intact" on its side at the ocean's basin, about 50m below the surface.

The ship's hull is obstructed with furniture and various objects, the Italian fire and rescue service has said.

Divers are looking for ways to access the yacht's cabins, but they have just 10 minutes to search on each dive before they need to return to the surface, the Italian news agency Ansa has reported.

A 1cm thick glass window is also being considered as an entry point.

Francesco Venuto, a spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, told the BBC on Monday rescue teams fear the bodies of those missing "must be" in the boat.

"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats, we've found nothing. That wouldn't make sense. In these conditions, we should have found something by now," he added.

A specialist caving search and rescue diving team arrived from Rome on Monday, hoping to "achieve results" either during the night or by Tuesday morning at the latest, the director general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, said.

On Monday, the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch sent a team of four investigators to carry out a preliminary assessment of the Bayesian's sinking, the BBC understands.

Who was on board?

PA Mike Lynch

There were 22 people on board when the storm hit, including 12 passengers and 10 crew.

The body of one man has been recovered. He has not been formally identified, but the Palermo coastguard said he was the ship's cook. His nationality has not been confirmed.

Among the six people still missing is 59-year-old tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, known by some as the "British Bill Gates".

Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was awarded an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006.

In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an $11bn (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

Afterwards, he told the BBC in an interview he had been able to prove his innocence only because he had the wealth to pay the enormous legal fees required.

The other missing people include Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares is among the 15 people to have been rescued, with eight of those receiving treatment in hospital, the Italian coastguard said.

Charlotte Golunski, her husband and daughter Sofia were also rescued and were unharmed, but taken to hospital for check-ups.

She said they had been on the yacht with a group of colleagues.

The daily Il Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported the vessel had mostly British passengers on board, but also people from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland and British-French citizens.

A doctor based in Palermo said the "very tired" survivors were "constantly asking about the missing people".

Dr Domenico Cipolla told Reuters that one woman he treated described the trip as a "corporate holiday", with some of those on board "very young".

"There were a lot of work colleagues, friends, a few husbands, wives, or a couple of friends who had joined in," he adds.

Facebook Charlotte Golunski

What is a waterspout and why do they form?

A waterspout is similar to a tornado and can form over oceans, seas or large lakes.

The western half of the Mediterranean has experienced severe storms since the middle of last week.

Through Sunday night and into Monday morning, a zone of bad weather passed by the north coast of Sicily.

BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "A waterspout is a tornado that has occurred over water rather than land.

"They can form during intense storms, on the base of cumulonimbus/thunder clouds.

"Turbulence, and the wind blowing in slightly different directions around the cloud, can cause rotation under the base of the cloud and the spout to form.

"Like tornadoes, they bring powerful winds, but instead of picking up dust and debris they cause a water mist around the column of rotating air."

What is the Bayesian, and who owns it?

EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock The Bayesian yacht

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites, and is listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week.

It was built in 2008 by Italian company Perini Navi.

The Bayesian's registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd, which is based on the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is understood to derive from the Bayesian theory, which Mr Lynch's PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on.

Mr Lynch's wife Ms Bacares is named as the sole legal owner of Revtom, which is registered in the Isle of Man.

The Bayesian completed a number of sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily, according to ship-tracking website VesselFinder.

A spokesperson for Camper and Nicholsons International, the firm that manages the 2008-built boat, told BBC Verify: "Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew."

The chairman of Morgan Stanley International was reportedly among the six missing people—including UK tech mogul Michael Lynch— after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht Bayesian sank in rough seas near Sicily early Monday morning, according to new reports.

Italian emergency services headed out to sea towards the area off the Sicilian coast on Tuesday, ... [+] Aug. 20, 2024.

Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur and one-time billionaire, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are confirmed to be among those still missing after the ship sank (his wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued).

Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of the Morgan Stanley International bank and insurance company Hiscox, is also reportedly among the missing along with his wife, Judy.

Authorities on Monday told the BBC the missing people are presumed to still be inside the boat, and rescue operations resumed Tuesday morning.

The vessel had 22 people on board — 10 crew and 12 passengers — including people from the United States, Britain and Canada, when it overturned at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Italian coast guard.

Fifteen people were rescued from the vessel (including a 1-year-old girl), one person was found dead and six, including two Americans , remain missing, according to multiple reports.

Local media reported the person who died was a member of the crew, thought to be the yacht’s chef .

Who Are The Missing People Aboard The Bayesian Yacht?

Lynch, 59, and his daughter were the first to be reported as among the missing. Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has also not been found, nor has his wife and jewelry designer Neda Morvillo. Bloomer, 70, a close friend of Lynch's, is also missing along with his wife, Judy.

Key Background

The Bayesian was anchored near the port of Porticello overnight Sunday when a harsh storm hit the coast that included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water. The ship tipped over and quickly was drug underwater by its massive mast —it had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at 246 feet. Of the 15 people rescued in the aftermath, eight were treated at a local hospital.

Lynch was acquitted in a fraud trial in June after he was accused by Hewlett-Packard of artificially inflating the value of Autonomy before HP bought it for more than $11 billion in 2011. HP wrote off $8.8 million of Autonomy's value within a year of buying the company. Today, The Times estimates Lynch has a net worth of £500 million. He "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a member of his staff told the U.K. paper, and business filings show the boat is legally owned by his wife, Bacares.

Surprising Fact: Lynch's Co-Defendant Stephen Chamberlain Died The Same Weekend

Stephen Chamberlain, who was acquitted in the same trial as Lynch in June, died hours after news broke of Lynch's disappearance. Chamberlain was hit by a car while jogging in England on Saturday morning and was put on life support before his death was announced late Monday, the Guardian reported . Lynch and Chamberlain were both indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale of Autonomy to HP before being acquitted.

What To Watch For

An ongoing search operation includes divers attempting to search the vessel, now sitting 160 feet below sea level, as well as rescue boats and helicopters, according to CNN .

$215,000. That's the cost to charter the Bayesian, a single-mast sailing vessel, for one week .

Crucial Quote

“She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water,” Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at the pediatric hospital in Palermo, Italy, told The Times . “Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.”

Seven bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued.

Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Charlotte Golunski

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed on Thursday that their bodies had been recovered.

The yacht's captain James Cutfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife.

It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

Pic:Danny Wheelz

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck, of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications.

He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency regulations before its voyage.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

What were its last movements?

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.
