The Puffer is a 13 ft. fractional sloop with very low freeboard. I'd like responses from sailors with experience sailing one. I'm sure they can ship water easily if not sailed flat. If they swamp do you bail first and then climb aboard? -CH PUFFER (AMF) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

I am pleased to find another owner, I sailed one as a kid in lake MI about 20 years ago and now sail one on a small inland lake I was lucky enough to find floating in the water when we bought the house. Parts and other owners are hard to find. Never swamped one, but I find it sails well in light to moderate winds, not enough in the water for higher winds just gets blown direction of the Wind Tom

Hello, I just bought a Puffer and she needs some parts. I need a cockpit drain plug and a rigging guide, or owners manual. Anybody know where i can get these items. Don

Did you ever find a drain plug for your puffer, where and can you tell me the dimension. I've tried West Marine catalog and I can't get the right thickness to stay in tightly. Thanks, Sarah

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Spin: 100 sq. ft.

Can any of you Puffer owners tell me how the puffer compares to the Sunfish as far as stability goes? I am considering a puffer or something like it that will hold 2 people more comfortably than a Sunfish. But how quick is it to roll over compared to a Fish? Thanks..

As a child I learned to sail on a Puffer. I would say they are more stable than a sunfish as well as have more room for two people and room to carry additional items if you plan to be out for hours. They are slightly more complex to sail having the jib, but that gives the second person a job to do, control the jib sheets. Understanding the mechanics of sailing is important for both safety and enjoyment. As stated prior, take a class or have someone with knowledge take you out and show you the ropes! Hope your first experience doesn't keep you from trying again.

Joe said: I've sailed both.... if you can't handle a Sunfish.. you will have trouble with the Puffer. It's got two sails and can get overpowered quickly if you don't know what you're doing. No matter what you decide... you'll be way better off to take a sailing class, or get some lessons... or at least get an instructional book for dinghy sailing. Heck.. you can google "how to sail a small boat" and get all kinds of YouTube stuff. Click to expand

Joe said: Oh brother..... weren't you the guy that had so much trouble getting his Sunfish righted??? How's that "learn by doing" working for you now? Please don't waste our time if you have it figured out already. If you care about your girlfriends safety... you're not showing it here. Click to expand

I did say that the Puffer is more stable than a Sunfish but I didn't say it wouldn't tip over. Probably the most fun a 12 year old kid could have on a small sailboat is tipping it over, it was kind of a game for us. We would intentionally tip the boat over in less than 8 knots of wind, but then we knew how to get it upright again!

kito

Is there such a thing as a stable dingy? There is a Puffer in the corral where I keep my C22. I think your gf would feel more comfortable in it over the Sunfish since you sit in it and not on it. Maybe pick low wind days at first to get the feel for tending the jib and mainsheet. Or even go out with just the jib at first and then raise the main after your comfortable. Looks like a fairly easy boat to right if she tips over.

Can you sit more forward? The fore aft trim, for that boat, in that picture is awful. I think sitting more forward would help with your tiller complaint. Small boats are very sensitive to crew position. The Capri's are real boats. I think they go from 16 to 26'. You can't know if the one available is too big until you know what it is.

Joe said: The tiller is long so you can steer from a more balanced position in the middle of the boat... just like the sunfish. Your mainsail looks improperly rigged, it is not attached to the mast along the leading edge. Did someone help you???? My guess is NO. Study this picture: Here are a hundred more: https://www.google.com/search?q=puf...om%2Fviewrecord.asp%3Fclass_id%3D4975;420;600 Click to expand

My coworker friend just stopped me and told me her family needs the Capri gone and they want me to come over and take it away. Free or maybe a few bucks later if I like it . Don't really need another boat but for this price hard to turn down unless it's junk. I know it needs work but waiting for more details/pictures. I suspect this boat may be larger than what I want/ or may be too much work for me..if so I will offer to anyone local here that might have a use for it.

101e it looks like the mainsail of the Puffer has a boltrope sewn into the luff (front) of the sail. Be sure to feed this into the slot on the mast as you hoist the main, keeping the bow pointed into the wind will as you hoist will make this much easier. This will help greatly in properly shaping the sail and it will actually make the boat a bit more stable. It's hard to tell from your pic, do you have all three battens in the sail? Also try to keep the daggerboard all the way down in the slot when sailing upwind, more stability and handling. It may seem awkward to tack if you are sitting more forward, but you'll catch on pretty quick how to move around things in the cockpit. This will help you balance the boat fore/aft when singlehanding. By keeping the bow down on the water the boat will handle better and be a little faster. Adjust your seating when your gf or others join you aboard. It sure looks like you are having lots of fun, both sailing and searching for the best boat for you. Sail on!

Late to the dance. My first boat was a Puffer back in the mid 70s. I loved it. I used to sail the waters around Annapolis. Great starter boat.
