An unfinished 168-foot superyacht abandoned in 2007 just sold after going up for auction with bids starting at $1.5 million — see inside the 40% complete yacht

  • An unfinished superyacht abandoned just before the Great Recession was up for auction starting at $1.5 million.
  • The 168-foot motoryacht could cost between $16 million to $25 million to complete.
  • Take a look at the nearly half-finished motoryacht that was just sold on November 15.

The auction for a 168-foot superyacht starting at only $1.5 million — an absolute steal — has officially closed.

The catch? It's only about 40% finished and the winning bidder is now responsible for bringing the 168-foot Trinity Tri-Deck yacht to life.

The final sales price of the vessel, sold through Boathouse Auctions, is not public.

But Jack Mahoney, a director at Boathouse Auctions, told Insider in an email that there were 32 interested groups that resulted in three final bids.

And both the buyer and seller were ultimately "pleased with the outcome," Mahoney said.

Yacht and boat sales have continued to skyrocket throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with some ultra-luxury yachts selling for millions of dollars above their initial asking price.

And the ultra-wealthy's demand for luxury homes at sea has yet to slow down.

abandoned mega yacht

Superyacht sales hit a record high in 2021 even as manufacturers struggled to keep up with demand amid supply chain and staffing problems.

abandoned mega yacht

This incomplete yacht may not be turnkey like the other vessels that have been sold during superyacht market's boom, but at least it is semi-customizable.

abandoned mega yacht

The previous owner of the 168-foot Trinity was formerly owner of the now-defunct luxury yacht-building company Trinity Yachts.

abandoned mega yacht

In the face of the Great Recession, the project was abandoned in 2007 when it was only 40% complete.

abandoned mega yacht

Since then, the half-finished semi-displacement yacht had been stuck in storage where it was regularly checked.

abandoned mega yacht

After several years, the vessel was finally put up for auction on Boathouse Auctions starting at a cool $1.5 million …

abandoned mega yacht

… a bargain compared to other — albeit complete — superyachts.

abandoned mega yacht

For now, the motoryacht is just a nearly completed shell of its potential (the aluminum hull and superstructure are about 95% done).

abandoned mega yacht

But picture its potential as a six-stateroom, four-deck yacht with luxurious amenities like an elevator.

abandoned mega yacht

Of the six staterooms, four for guests and two for the crew.

abandoned mega yacht

The customizable yacht can also accommodate spaces like a galley, formal dining area, owner's lounge …

abandoned mega yacht

… deck with a 12-person dining table …

abandoned mega yacht

… several salons, and an outdoor lounge on the sun deck.

abandoned mega yacht

It obviously wouldn't be a luxury superyacht without a large sun deck.

abandoned mega yacht

The current owner can build out this lounge by adding a bar, dinette, outdoor galley, and more lounge seats to create the perfect space to bask under the afternoon sun.

abandoned mega yacht

And when it's time to cool off in the water, the owners can head to the garage for access to toys like jet skis and a jet tender.

abandoned mega yacht

Along with the half-complete motoryacht, the highest bidder also received several parts like engines and a watertight door …

abandoned mega yacht

… as well as some help from the original Trinity Yacht's design and engineering team.

abandoned mega yacht

When it's finally complete, the home at sea will be able to hit up to 23 knots with a less than eight-foot draft.

abandoned mega yacht

But to finish the project, its owner will have to cough up at least $16 million for lower-end finishes, according to estimates from shipyards in Greece and Turkey, Mahoney, told Insider in October.

abandoned mega yacht

If they want top-of-the-line amenities, the project could cost upwards of $25 million.

abandoned mega yacht

To compare, buying a new yacht of this similar size could cost over $35 million, according to the 168-foot Trinity 2007's listing page.

abandoned mega yacht

The unfinished yacht was likely far from inexpensive …

abandoned mega yacht

… but with time, patience, and a few extra supplies, the yacht's new owner could find themselves saving close to $20 million.

“A notice to the newspapers and other media will be published for a period of 10 days, notifying the sale of the Alfa Nero vessel in order to satisfy the requirements under the law for a forced sale,” a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda read. “If the owner fails to claim the vessel within that time period, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda will sell it to the highest bidder.”

Delivered in 2007 by Oceanco, Alfa Nero features a striking exterior by Nuvolari Lenard and interior styling by Alberto Pinto that together have landed the yacht a number of awards. The beautiful behemoth notably features six staterooms, accommodation for 28 crew, a hydraulically operated pool and a large helipad aft. Alfa Nero was sold in 2011 to its current owner with an asking price of $115 million, according to Marine Industry News . The Guardian has previously reported that the yacht is linked to the Russian oligarch (and Putin ally) Andrey Guryev.

The Antigua and Barbuda government reportedly consulted with the US authorities prior to taking the action. During a media briefing, Information Minister Melford Nicholas told reporters that any proceeds from the sale of Alfa Nero would remain in the Antiguan government’s hands, but the US could request access to the funds in the future.

A SUPERYACHT that was seized for its links to Vladimir Putin's crony Andrey Guryev has finally been sold - but for less than half its original value.

Mystery surrounds the identity of the Alfa Nero ' vessel's buyer but the boat worth an estimated $105 million (£81.5m) went for a measly $40 million (£31m)

The stunning Alfa Nero superyacht went for just $40 million despite an estimated worth of $105 million

The 82-metre luxury yacht was abandoned by Caribbean island Antigua for over two years before its confiscation in 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine .

The move came as part of a series of sanctions faced by Russian oligarchs following the onset of the deadly war.

Ronald Sanders, Antigua & Barbuda’s ambassador to the US could not name the yacht 's new owner due to a confidentiality agreement.

This comes after Sanders gave potential owners up to 10 days to claim the vessel.

He said: "If the owner fails to claim the vessel within that time period, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda will sell it to the highest bidder."

Former owner of the superyacht, which boasts a 40ft infinity pool among other glamorous features is oligarch Andrey Guryev, 64.

He made his huge £8bn fortune from a Russian fertiliser company PhosAgro but was hit by sanctions by the US, Britain and the EU in 2022.

Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt tried to buy the Alfa Nero for $67.6 million at an auction before he knew of its haunting past.

But Guryev's daughter Yulia claimed ownership of the high-end vessel, triggering an arduous legal dispute.

However, billionaire dad Guryev denied ownership, but was caught out by the US Treasury Department - which claimed PhosAgro's former boss bought the boat for $120 million in 2014.

It was registered with a company in the British Virgin Islands and listed Yulia as a beneficiary before being docked at Falmouth Harbour in Saint Paul Parish, Antigua.

Oligarch Guryev's personal fortune is thought to be $9.3 billion (£7.2bn) despite being subject to US, UK and EU sanctions.

Broker Richard Higgins, who is representing the undisclosed buyer, told Fortune magazine : "They needed to get the boat sold."

Higgins let slip that the superyacht's new owner was European and is likely to put the Alfa Nero on the charter market.

The Alfa Nero is just one of several superyachts affected, with a growing number of  oligarchs moving their yachts  into no extradition waters shorty after Putin waged war on Ukraine .

The vessel was built back in 2007 and won several awards for its design, which includes a staircase that wraps around a glass lift shaft.

Inside the superyacht projects that never left the yard

Related articles.

For yacht designers, there’s nothing better than a big commission. But what happens when your dream project doesn’t make the water?   Charlotte Hogarth-Jones speaks to four leading designers as they discuss the fate of superyacht projects that never left the shipyard...

PROJECT MARS

Studio H2 Yacht Design

Progress made Two years – the team were about to lay the keel

H2 Yacht Design: "Our involvement in Project Mars began while we were doing some refit work for a client. Towards the end of the job, I realised that there must be another project in the offing – but, for whatever reason, we hadn’t been invited to pitch for it.

"I had a word with the captain, who gave me a sense of what the owner was looking for, and I worked up some designs that I hoped I’d be able to show the client at the Monaco Yacht Show. Try as I might, however, I couldn’t get access to him. I was sitting in this café, feeling dejected, when across the road I caught sight of him, with his captain. I immediately ran over and asked if I could show him my ideas and, as luck would have it, he loved them. He basically pulled the plug on the other designer right there and then.

"Most clients were nervous about committing to this look in case it was just a trend. Now they’re everywhere! In terms of interiors, he was very into the idea of a clean, modern Scandinavian feel, but with a natural palette and some signature pieces based around nature, such as tree root coffee tables from Chista.

"About a year later, Fincantieri marketed the project for sale – it came close a few times with subtle variations, but the demand for such radical yachts is not as high as you might imagine, and an agreement could never quite be made."

For us, the story has a happy ending, as one day, six or seven years later, we got a call from a client representative in the Middle East who wanted to discuss the Mars project with us. That call led to the commissioning of the 123-metre Al Lusail project at Lürssen, so it was nice that something good came out of it in the end, and we’d had a test bed to develop in detail some interesting ideas that we then went on to transfer to other projects. Would I do it all again? Absolutely. Without Mars, we’d never have got to do Al Lusail , and the client was one of the most dynamic guys I’ve ever met. I owe him a lot.

PROJECT LIGHT

Studio Nauta Design

Progress made Construction had already begun at Fincantieri Yachts – plate cutting had started, the shaft lines were already built and the project was fully engineered and tank-tested

Nauta Design: "It’s not often that you get carte blanche to do exactly what you like as a brief, but that’s what we were asked to do by an owner back in 2006, who wanted us to design the exterior of a motor yacht. We met him through another one of our clients at a party. It was the largest yacht we’d ever been asked to design at the time, so it was a big deal for our studio, and we were thrilled to have so much freedom to work with.

"We didn’t think that yachts had enough outside space, and we wanted owners to connect more with the ocean. So, we changed the balance drastically, from about 30 per cent outdoor/70 per cent indoor space, to something more like 50/50, and we made windows a lot larger, with no obstructions.

"Project Light was to include 640 square metres of free teak decks, and 770 square metres of luxurious accommodation “wrapped” in 200 square metres of glass surfaces. At the time this was revolutionary – no one was doing things this way.

"Then, the global financial crisis of 2008 happened, and I think it was a surprise for everyone apart from a few very savvy financiers who saw it coming. Our client’s business was doing really well, and we were two years into the project. It wasn’t nice."

"By the time we were given notice that the project wasn’t going to go ahead any more, Project Light had been fully tank-tested in the Netherlands, and they’d just started cutting the steel. The owner lost their deposit to Fincantieri shipyard, which basically paid for the extensive engineering and testing they’d done and things that they’d bought, such as the propeller shafts. Thankfully the steel could be used on projects elsewhere.

"We were paid for all our design work, and to be honest, the project was absolutely a good thing for us, because it led to us being contacted by the future owners of Azzam , one of the largest yachts in the world. They’d seen Project Light and loved the boldness of it. In the end, what we designed for them didn’t have many elements in common with Project Light – they didn’t want as much exterior space as the climate they were using the yacht in was so different – but we did apply the same big, light windows, and the two yachts have the same grace and lighter superstructure.

"We tried to market Light at the time and sell it along with Fincantieri, but there were few who were interested in something so niche. But we did have a handful of people interested, and in one meeting an American prospect, a very refined gentleman, commented that Light “could have been designed by Frank Lloyd Wright”. That was arguably the best compliment we ever received."

PROJECT ROSSY ONE

Studio Luca Dini Design & Architecture

Progress made Exterior renovation was well under way; new interior was designed but not installed

Luca Dini Design & Architecture: "I’ve got no problem admitting that I felt completely in awe the first time I stepped on board Rossy One . Here was a yacht that had gone through such important and terrible phases throughout history. It was exciting to have the opportunity to work on a boat with a real soul.

"The yacht was launched in 1931 with the name Argosy and had been designed for a New York banker by Cox & Stevens. It became an American Navy warship during the Second World War (renamed Cythera ), after which it was bought by the American League for a Free Palestine, largely thanks to funds obtained with the proceeds of a theatrical script by the writer Ben Hecht, from which the boat took its name.

" Cythera , however, was accosted by Britain’s Royal Navy not far from the Palestinian coast with more than 600 Jewish refugees on board, and the vessel was then redirected to Haifa, where it once more became a warship – INS Maoz. It was abandoned at the end of the Suez/Sinai campaign in 1956, and then operated as a passenger ferry on the Sorrento-Capri line under the name Santa Maria del Mare, until it was bought in 2006 by the Italian owner I knew.

"I already knew him because I’d designed a yacht for him previously, so we had a good working relationship. Seeing this beautiful classic yacht sitting abandoned, and planning its return to its glory days, was simply exhilarating. Unfortunately, due to financial problems, and also a lack of time on the owner’s part to commit to such a big project, Rossy One was stopped at a very advanced stage. The renovation of the exterior was well under way, while my interior project was complete – it just hadn’t been put into practice yet.

"I feel bittersweet about the whole thing and, to me, Rossy One seems like unfinished business. Yet, after several years, I still feel very proud of it and close to it. Had it gone ahead, it would have been one of the highlights of my career, I’m sure of it."

PROJECT ICEBREAKER

Studio Studio Indigo

Progress made Five months – a Scandinavian shipyard had been identified and visited, plus a concept GA had become a working GA. An interior outfitter had also been identified

Studio Indigo: "In late 2016, we were approached by a client to undertake a feasibility study for an 85-metre polar ice-class explorer yacht. We were absolutely delighted – it was exciting new territory for our design team, although the clients and their tastes were familiar to us. They were known for their forward-thinking and open-minded approach, and they made it clear that they wanted to push the boundaries a bit, so the yacht was always going to be something very special.

"As well as a charter yacht, they also wanted the boat to serve as a research and conservation platform, so the brief was to create a super-efficient, functional vessel that would be as capable of pushing through sheet ice near the North Pole as it would be cruising up the Amazon.

"It had equally appointed accommodation for up to 24 guests, and each suite had side-deck access directly from the cabin. The boat had an impressive list of toys too – including ROVs, submarines, a snowcat and four snowmobiles – plus three panoramic viewing lounges, one of which floated above the convertible helicopter hangar.

"Our design incorporated exposed beams and cambered ceilings with bronze bracing details. Natural materials were used in abundance, with brushed wooden floors and weathered teak joinery, all softened by plush contemporary furniture and textured wall panels.

"Part of the theme of the vessel encompassed wellness and retreat, so the spa facilities on board were also considered carefully. We looked at how part of the hull floor could be glass, creating a viewing portal to admire the sea life while being pampered by hot stone or mud treatment massages, and we planned to illuminate the water beneath the boat to attract curious sea life. Seeing a beluga whale swim while you’re being massaged would have certainly given you something to talk about at dinner!

"Project Icebreaker reached a fairly advanced stage, with meetings being held with a Scandinavian specialist shipyard and interior outfitter in both our London studio and over there, and the specification of helicopter and tenders had also been considered. Then the client’s personal circumstances suddenly changed, and the project had to be shelved.

We were particularly disappointed as this boat represented something so completely new and challenging for us, and working with a client you know is also a huge advantage, as you really understand how they live and what their values are. We aren’t aware of any intention to restart the project, so we’ve moved on for now. But we always keep in mind that one day we may be called up to reignite this visionary and hugely ambitious project. You never know…"

If this were a real James Bond scenario, it would be a darn good one. A James Bond-themed superyacht, aptly called 007 and restyled to resemble something the world-famous spy would sail, has been refloated, six full months after it was intentionally run aground.

abandoned mega yacht

On September 2, 2022, 007 ran aground off the coast of Greece, in Kolona Bay, some 15 meters (49.2 feet) from the beach. Initial reports said that some kind of navigation error had steered the vessel off course, so it hit rocks when it entered shallow waters. The hull was pierced and it started taking on water, so, to prevent it from sinking into deeper waters, the captain ran it aground.

After that, 007 tilted to the port side and eventually capsized, ending up on its side. It spent the next six months that way, with authorities seemingly in no rush to salvage it, though they did put up floating walls to keep pollution under control. As of this moment, the exact damages to the ecosystem are unknown.

abandoned mega yacht

On March 6, Greek authorities began the salvage operation, which concluded on March 22, with 007 refloated. If this happened in a James Bond movie, it would probably be the scene before the end credits, and Bond himself (Bond, James Bond) would make an appearance alongside the lady of the moment, and they would kiss as the camera would zoom out on the beautiful vessel, back in an upright position.

But this is no movie, and the situation continues to remain very strange, beyond the fact that authorities waited half a year to remove a vessel that posed a danger to the picturesque area.

abandoned mega yacht

By the looks of things, 007 has been abandoned by the owner, a millionaire businessman who was also the captain, amid claims that he deliberately ran it aground for other reasons than those having to do with the danger of sinking. One particular report, included in the second video available at the bottom of the page, says that he did it because the ship was no longer seaworthy and may have had severe balance issues brought on by repeated modifications to the hull.

abandoned mega yacht

Delivered in 2006 by Aegean Yachts as Royal Enterprise, 007 was initially a 32-meter (105-foot) that was modified extensively in subsequent refits. When it ran aground, it was 49 meters (160 feet) long and featured all the trappings of larger superyachts, including a touch-and-go helipad and an additional deck that wasn’t in the original design by Yavuz Mete.

According to the latest reports in the Greek media, the millionaire owner has been given one month to recover his superyacht, now that it’s been refloated, after which he will be liable to huge fines. Whether he’s actually coming back for it, after it spent half a year half-underwater, remains to be seen

Breaking news, ex-google ceo eric schmidt wins russian oligarch’s superyacht for $67.6m at auction.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt sailed off with the superyacht abandoned in the Caribbean by its Russian oligarch owner after the invasion of Ukraine with a winning $67.6 million bid during an auction Friday.

Schmidt bought the 267-foot Alfa Nero yacht after it was left moored in Antigua by Andrey Guryev, the Russian billionaire who was slapped with sanctions by the US Treasury last year, according to Bloomberg News.

The Treasury Department claimed that Guryev, who made his fortune in the fertilizer industry and is thought to be close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, initially bought the yacht for $120 million in 2014, but the Russian oligarch has denied the claim.

The former Google boss, whose net worth was valued by Bloomberg Billionaires Index at $25 billion as of Friday, “won the auction this morning in a fully transparent process,” according to Sir Ronald Sanders, Antigua’s ambassador to the US.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt placed a winning bid for $67.6 million at an auction on Friday for a superyacht.

The vessel, which has been described by its manufacturer Oceanco as “one of the world’s most iconic and highly awarded yachts,” includes amenities such as a baby grand piano and a swimming pool that converts into a helipad, Bloomberg News reported.

Antigua and Barbuda was eager to sell the vessel due to mounting maintenance costs totaling some $112,000 per month that accumulated while it sat in Falmouth Harbor.

Schmidt served as Google’s CEO from 2001 to 2011, a time of rapid growth for the California-based technology company.

Andrey Guryev is the Russian billionaire who was slapped with sanctions by the US Treasury last year.

He later became executive chairman for Google, and in 2015, for its new parent company, Alphabet, before resigning as chairman in 2018.

The US and other Western countries sanctioned several Russian oligarchs following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine last year.

An Antiguan port official told Bloomberg News that Guryev’s daughter filed a last-minute injunction claiming ownership of the yacht.

Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt Docks Purchase of Superyacht Over ‘Legal Wrangling’

The 267-foot luxury vessel belonging to a russian heiress has been abandoned in antigua and barbuda since march 2022.

Former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt is changing course on his purchase of a superyacht abandoned by a Russian heiress after she launched a legal battle over the vessel.

Schmidt, who won the 267-foot superyacht for $67.6 million at a public auction in June, withdrew his offer several days ago, Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the U.S. told Bloomberg .

“Schmidt, because of the legal wrangling, determined that we could not give him clear title of the ship,” Sanders said in a Friday interview. “That’s not accurate, because the ship belongs to us, it is owned by the government.”

The Alfa Nero, as the luxury yacht is called, was abandoned in Antigua’s Falmouth Harbor in March 2022 — one of the many glittering vessels and properties cast aside by sanctioned Russian elites following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Lawyers for Yulia Gurieva-Motlokhov, daughter of Russian fertilizer magnate Andrey Guryev, claimed in a July legal appeal that she was the rightful owner of the Alfa Nero. The luxury boat houses a baby grand piano and a swimming pool that converts into a helipad, according to Bloomberg.

The U.S. Treasury Department previously blocked the yacht sale due to Guryev’s ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but removed it from the sanctions list earlier this year. Guryev formerly headed PhosAgro, one of the world's largest phosphate-based fertilizer producers.

Eric Schmidt headed Google between 2001 and 2011, and left the board of Google’s parent, Alphabet, in 2019. He currently has a net worth of about $20 billion , according to Forbes.

U.S. seizes mega yacht owned by oligarch with close ties to Putin

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain — The U.S. government seized a mega yacht in Spain owned by an oligarch with close ties to the Russian president on Monday, the first in the government’s sanctions enforcement initiative to “seize and freeze” giant boats and other pricey assets of Russian elites .

Spain’s Civil Guard and U.S. federal agents descended on the yacht at the Marina Real in the port of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Associated Press reporters at the scene saw police going in and out of the boat on Monday morning.

The seizure was confirmed by two people familiar with the matter. The people could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity. A Spanish Civil Guard spokesman confirmed that officers from the Spanish police body and from the FBI were at the marina searching the vessel Monday morning and said further details would be released later.

A Civil Guard source told The Associated Press that the immobilized yacht is Tango, a 78-meter (254-feet) vessel that carries Cook Islands flag and that  Superyachtfan.com , a specialized website that tracks the world’s largest and most exclusive recreational boats, values at $120 million. The source was also not authorized to be named in media reports and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

The yacht is among the assets linked to Viktor Vekselberg, a billionaire and close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin who heads the Moscow-based Renova Group, a conglomerate encompassing metals, mining, tech and other assets, according to U.S. Treasury Department documents. All of Vekselberg’s assets in the U.S. are frozen and U.S. companies are forbidden from doing business with him and his entities.

The move is the first time the U.S. government has seized an oligarch’s yacht since Attorney General Merrick Garland and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen assembled a task force known as REPO — short for Russian Elites, Proxies and Oligarchs — as an effort to enforce sanctions after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

Vekselberg has long had ties to the U.S. including a green card he once held and homes in New York and Connecticut. The Ukrainian-born businessman built his fortune by investing in the aluminum and oil industries in the post-Soviet era.

Vekselberg was also questioned in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and has worked closely with his American cousin, Andrew Intrater, who heads the New York investment management firm Columbus Nova.

Vekselberg and Intrater were thrust into the spotlight in the Mueller probe after the attorney for adult film star Stormy Daniels released a memo that claimed $500,000 in hush money was routed through Columbus Nova to a shell company set up by Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen. Columbus Nova denied that Vekselberg played any role in its payments to Cohen.

Vekselberg and Intrater met with Cohen at Trump Tower, one of several meetings between members of Trump’s inner circle and high-level Russians during the 2016 campaign and transition.

The 64-year-old mogul founded Renova Group more than three decades ago. The group holds the largest stake in United Co. Rusal, Russia’s biggest aluminum producer, among other investments.

Vekselberg was first sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018, and again in March of this year, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began. Vekselberg has also been sanctioned by authorities in the United Kingdom.

The U.S. Justice Department has also launched a sanctions enforcement task force known as KleptoCapture , which also aims to enforce financial restrictions in the U.S. imposed on Russia and its billionaires, working with the FBI, Treasury and other federal agencies. That task force will also target financial institutions and entities that have helped oligarchs move money to dodge sanctions.

The White House has said that many allied countries, including German, the U.K, France, Italy and others are involved in trying to collect and share information against Russians targeted for sanctions. In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden warned oligarch that the U.S. and European allies would “find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets.”

“We are coming for your ill-begotten gains,” he said.

Wednesday’s capture is not the first time Spanish authorities have been involved in the seizure of a Russian oligarch’s superyacht. Officials there said they had seized a vessel valued at over $140 million owned by the CEO of a state-owned defense conglomerate and a close Putin ally.

French authorities have also seized superyachts, including one believed to belong to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, which has been on the U.S. sanctions list since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Italy has also seized several yachts and other assets.

Italian financial police moved quickly seizing the superyacht “Lena” belonging to Gennady Timchenko, an oligarch close to Putin, in the port of San Remo; the 65-meter (215-foot) “Lady M” owned by Alexei Mordashov in nearby Imperia, featuring six suites and estimated to be worth 65 million euros; as well as villas in Tuscany and Como, according to government officials.

Para reported from Madrid and Balsamo reported from Washington.

Abandoned £100m mega yacht ‘seized from Putin’s friend’ finally sold to mystery buyer after 2 years… but for a fraction of the price

A SUPERYACHT that was seized for its links to Andrei Guriev, Putin’s accomplice was eventually sold – but for less than half its original value.

The identity of the buyer of the Alfa Nero ship remains a mystery, but the boat, valued at $105 million, was sold for a modest $40 million.

Abandoned £100m mega yacht ‘seized from Putin’s friend’ finally sold to mystery buyer after 2 years… but for a fraction of the price

The 82 meters luxury The yacht was abandoned on the Caribbean island of Antigua for more than two years before it was seized in 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine.

The move is part of a series of sanctions imposed on Russian oligarchs after the start of the deadly war.

Ronald Sanders, Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the United States, was unable to name the yacht new owner due to confidentiality agreement.

The move comes after Sanders gave potential owners up to 10 days to claim the vessel.

He said: “If the owner does not claim the vessel within this period, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda will sell it to the highest bidder.”

Former owner of the superyacht, which has a 40-foot infinity pool Among its other glamorous features is oligarch Andrey Guryev, 64.

He built his vast £8bn fortune through Russian fertiliser company PhosAgro, but was hit by sanctions from the US, Britain and the EU in 2022.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt tried to buy the Alfa Nero for $67.6 million at auction before learning of its troubled past.

But Guryev’s daughter, Yulia, claimed ownership of the luxury ship, sparking a bitter legal dispute.

However, billionaire father Guryev denied ownership, but was caught out by the US Treasury Department which claimed the former PhosAgro boss bought the boat for $120 million in 2014.

It was registered with a British Virgin Islands company and listed Yulia as the beneficiary before being docked at Falmouth Harbour in St Paul’s Parish, Antigua.

Oligarch Guryev’s personal fortune is estimated at $9.3 billion, although he is subject to sanctions from the US, UK and EU.

Broker Richard Higgins, who represents the unnamed buyer, told Fortune magazine: “They needed to sell the boat.”

Higgins let slip that the superyacht’s new owner was European and would likely put the Alfa Nero on the charter market.

The Alfa Nero is just one of many superyachts affected, with a growing number of oligarchs moving their yachts into extradition-free waters shortly after Putin declared war on Ukraine .

The ship was built in 2007 and has won several awards for its design, which includes a staircase that wraps around a glass elevator shaft.

The Floating Mansion features a 40 foot infinity pool which also serves as a helipad, jacuzzi, spa, gym and beauty room.

There is a beach club that allows guests to jump in and out of the sea and a luxurious interior.

A Guide To All The Outrageous Mansions And Estates Owned By Sanctioned Russian Billionaires

Alisher Usmanov's Sutton Place estate in Surrey, England.

Forbes uncovered at least 156 properties—worth a collective $5.6 billion—held by 30 targeted Russian-born oligarchs, ranging from a posh Manhattan townhouse to a grand Italian villa. All are at risk of seizure.

Updated on September 14, 2023. The map in this article has not been updated with the additional properties included since its initial publication in March 2022.

R ussian oligarchs looking to hide their “ill-begotten gains” from sanctions may be able to evade the authorities in a superyacht or private jet, but good luck moving that $190 million villa on the French Riviera.

On March 3, the U.S. and the United Kingdom ratcheted up the pressure on Russian billionaires reportedly close to Vladimir Putin when they simultaneously announced an asset freeze and travel ban on prolific investor Alisher Usmanov. The 68-year-old metals magnate had already been sanctioned three days earlier by the European Union, making him one of 50 Russian-born billionaires sanctioned by the EU, U.S., U.K. Switzerland, Canada or Japan since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014; 24 were hit for the first time in the past month since Russian troops invaded Ukraine.

Two of Usmanov’s most prized assets—the 16th-century Sutton Place estate in Surrey and the Beechwood House mansion in London—are located in England. According to a press release by the British government announcing the sanctions , both properties have now been frozen, and no "British citizen or business" can deal with Usmanov. In practice, this means Usmanov can’t sell, rent, or receive any economic benefits from the homes.

He’s not the only sanctioned Russian-born billionaire with significant real estate holdings outside of Russia. Nor is he the only one with homes in Western capitals. Forbes uncovered at least 156 properties owned by 30 sanctioned Russian-born oligarchs, stretching from Connecticut to Sardinia. By Forbes ’ count, these properties are collectively worth $5.6 billion.

While asset freezes and travel bans may block these oligarchs from visiting their far-flung homes, it doesn’t mean they immediately lose control of them. That’s in part because it’s not always easy to pin the ownership on them. Putin ally Oleg Deripaska was first sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018, and two of his properties—one in Washington, D.C. and another in New York City—were raided by the FBI in October 2021. But their ownership still hasn’t changed: Forbes reviewed property records in both cities that show both of those properties, plus a third in Manhattan that’s been linked to Deripaska, are still owned by three Delaware-based LLCs that bought them prior to the sanctions. A spokesperson for Deripaska told the Washington Post on March 1 that the homes are owned by his relatives.

A common way to get around sanctions, according to Alexi Fehlman, an analyst at data intelligence firm Sayari Labs who specializes in Eurasia and Russia, is to transfer properties to a relative or a close associate. “Even though there's a push to seize assets, that's going to be complicated," Fehlman says. "Legally, a lot of the time they're not necessarily the owners of the property. Often it'll be an [offshore] entity.”

Still, the U.S. and its allies in Europe have recently indicated they will step up enforcement of sanctions and seize any assets held by sanctioned individuals. On March 2, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a new task force named "KleptoCapture" that will target Russian oligarchs and use asset forfeiture to seize the holdings of sanctioned individuals. That includes using "cutting-edge investigative techniques" such as data analytics, cryptocurrency tracing, foreign intelligence sources and information from financial regulators to identify any sanctions evasion.

Here are the mansions, villas and luxury apartments held by sanctioned Russian-born billionaires outside of Russia:

Alexander Abramov

Sanctioned by: u.k., australia, citizenship: russia, properties in: prague, czech republic; mykonos, greece; auckland and hikurangi, new zealand; west caicos, turks and caicos islands, total estimated value: $30 million.

Alexander Abramov owns several properties in New Zealand, where the steel tycoon had to apply for the right to own property in the country in 2015 and 2020. Abramov owns a 39-apartment complex the Auckland suburb of Morningside, as well as the Helena Bay Lodge, a "delightfully intimate retreat" set on 800 acres of farmland and native forest replete with four private beaches, a 25-metre heated swimming pool, outdoor firepit and and a luxury yacht. In October 2022, the New Zealand government sanctioned Abramov but limited the sanctions to a travel ban for Abramov and his family, including on his aircraft and vessels, without targeting his properties in the country.

The Guardian reported in April 2022 that Abramov, alongside his business partner Alexander Frolov, owns several other properties through British Virgin Islands-based Vollin Holdings Ltd. The assets held through Vollin include the Caribbean resort island of West Caicos, in the Turks and Caicos islands; a golf course community in Prague with homes, a hotel and a spa; a part-built hotel with land in Mykonos, Greece; and several commercial properties in the U.K., worth more than $120 million.

Both Chateau de la Croë and his St. Barts estate have been frozen by French authorities.

He previously owned two co-op apartments on East 73rd Street and four townhomes on East 75th Street in New York City—including three adjacent properties at 9, 11 and 13 East 75th that he consolidated into a six-story, 31,500-square-foot home which will become the largest single residence in Manhattan upon its completion—before transferring all six properties to his ex-wife Dasha Zhukova for a combined $92.3 million in 2018, according to property records. The mammoth residence at 9-13 East 75th will feature a swimming pool surrounded by a glass-paneled wall , a rooftop garden and an art gallery. A representative for Abramovich did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sanctioned by: u.s., eu, u.k., canada, switzerland, japan, australia, properties in: cap d’antibes, france, total estimated value: $275 million.

His four villas in Cap d’Antibes on the French Riviera were embroiled in a tax scandal involving a Swiss company named Swiru Holding AG in 2020. French authorities fined Swiru $1.6 million for alleged tax evasion in the sale of one of the villas, named Hier, to Kerimov in 2008, for a declared amount of $51 million instead of the actual purchase price of nearly $190 million. Located on so-called "Millionaires' Bay," the nearly 13,000-square-foot Hier also served as the backdrop for the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Michael Caine .

In May 2020, Kerimov's legal counsel Nikita Sychev issued a statement after the fine was issued, indicating that Kerimov "is not under any investigation in this case and that he has never been convicted by any court whatsoever, in France or abroad." The statement also cites that French courts dismissed prior allegations of money-laundering made against Kerimov, which "caused serious prejudice to [Kerimov] since they constituted the sole basis for the sanctions imposed on him by the [U.S.]" A representative for Kerimov did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The video shows an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, tennis court and a wine cellar, as well as a large treehouse and smaller properties on the grounds. A spokesperson for Khan told the MailOnline in October 2020 that the property was not abandoned and was occupied by a Russian family that was living there on the behest of Khan and his wife. 'The whole property is in the process of being renovated. This is a multi-stage process,” he said. “So far the Lodge house has been renovated and that part of the project completed, and it has people living in it again.'

Arkady Rotenberg

Sanctioned by: eu, u.k., u.s., australia, canada, japan, switzerland, properties in: rome, sardinia and tarquinia, italy; surrey, u.k.; saint-jean-cap-ferrat, france, total estimated value: $170 million.

Putin’s onetime judo partner, Rotenberg owns several properties in Italy, including two villas in the luxe Costa Smeralda in Sardinia; a villa and an apartment in southern Sardinia; a villa in the hilltop town of Tarquinia, north of Rome; and the 4-star Berg Luxury Hotel in central Rome near the Spanish Steps. The properties, which he owned through Cyprus-based Olpon Investments Limited, were reportedly valued at $40 million in 2014. In September that year, Italian authorities froze those assets after the EU imposed sanctions on him as a result of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Rotenberg sued the EU over the sanctions and obtained a partial annulment in November 2016, when the General Court of the European Union upheld them but revoked the "restrictive measures" applied from July 30, 2014 to March 14, 2015—a period of time that covers the Italian government’s freezing of his assets.

Arkady is still the sole shareholder of Olpon, according to filings from the Cyprus Registrar of Companies. According to Italian property records, Arkady still owns 50% of Aurora 31—the company that owns the Berg Luxury Hotel—through Olpon Investments Limited. The other 50% is owned by another Cyprus-based firm, Logotax Developments Limited, which is owned by Boris. He owns the property through Luxembourg-based Lucasnel SA, according to Luxembourg and French corporate records. French authorities have frozen Villa Shoshana.

Another one of Rotenberg’s properties, the Upper Ribsden estate in Surrey, England, has been entangled in a dispute with his ex-wife Natalia since their divorce in 2013. Rotenberg acquired the home for $44 million in 2012 through British Virgin Islands-based Ravendark Holdings Limited, which still owns the home, per British property records. According to court filings , Ravendark obtained the funds to purchase the estate through a loan provided by Cyprus-based Olpon, which is still owned by Rotenberg. (Part of the loan was also used to buy a Bentley.) The 27,000-square-foot manor features an Italian glass chandelier and a curved marble staircase and is set in six acres surrounded by woods and the Sunningdale golf course. Amenities include a 42-foot swimming pool, games suite, cinema, and a wine cellar.

In July 2016, a British court ordered Rotenberg to transfer the property to Natalia, a decision that was upheld in August 2019 and again in January 2021, when a British judge ruled that Ravendark holds the property "on resulting trust for" Rotenberg and that he is the "sole beneficial owner." Rotenberg appealed that decision and won the latest round in the long-running saga in November 2021, when a panel of three judges ruled that Rotenberg's ownership of the property "has not yet been properly determined" and ordered a full rehearing. A representative for Rotenberg did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In 2009, Rotenberg obtained initial authorization for a third villa with a pool, tennis court and a private funicular; work was stopped for unknown reasons and the project was reauthorized in 2015, with construction resuming in 2018. An incredible mega yacht so large that has its own submarine could double as a billionaires playground and a research lab.

Plans for the 700ft Goliath yacht includes research equipment, jet skis, helicopters and three heated pools.

The vessel is touted to cost a whopping £1 billion - $A2 billion.

Part of the Goliath series, the Q-quest yacht designed by California based yacht designer Steve Kozloff.

The £1 billion - $2 billion - vessel has it’s own submarine. Picture: Steve Kozloff

The massive research floater has been described as an expedition dream, providing plenty of lab space for research, experimentation, and medical intervention.

The mega-yacht is also loaded with plenty of exploration vehicles, including six hydrofoil tenders, two seaplanes, three jet skies, two helicopters, a U-Worx Research submarine, and a garage for two overland SUVs.

The Q-quest is 700ft long.. Picture: Steve Kozloff

A separate hangar at midship stores two Cessna Caravan Seaplanes, selected for their ability to transport resupply across long distances.

The three upper decks are reserved for the owner and guests, offering 18 VIP cabins and a primary suite with a private balcony and pool.

It also boasts five-star amenities like a beach club, Turkish bath, three heated pools, yoga studio, and a 20-person theatre.

The mega yacht also has an impressive 3,000-square-foot owner’s suite with panoramic views at the bow, a large spa and pool, a basketball court.

There’s another pool with a shaded lounge area above the hangar, a dining room at the stern, and a solarium with a second dining area, plus a beach club with a full bar.

A total of 26 owner’s guests will reside on the three upper decks, while an operating crew of 150 including doctors, scientists, pilots, nurses, research engineers will reside in unspecified quarters.

Luxury aside, the predominantly research vessel would carry a complete oceanographic laboratory, a medical laboratory with MRI and X-ray imaging.

It could even hold as many as 20 hospital beds with 5G-connected robotic surgery facilities.

It also boasts five-star amenities like a beach club, Turkish bath, three heated pools, yoga studio, and a 20-person theatre. Picture: Steve Kozloff

Propelled by thrusters powered by batteries, the vessel can reach a top speed of 20 knots with a range of 20,000 nautical miles.

Kozloff told autoevolution : “The mission of G-Quest, a 705-foot yacht, allows its owner to oversee their philanthropic efforts while living in luxury at sea.

“It is designed for both humanitarian and research objectives.”

The G-quest isn’t the only luxury yacht to boast a helipad.

Plans for the “Floating Dubai” vessel include an enormous pool deck , a relaxing spa and not one, but two enormous helipads on board.

The vessel also has a research laboratory on board. Picture: Steve Kozloff

Christened UAE One, the superboat was designed by Milan-based Enzo Manca, who collaborated with a sheikh to make it the flagship of the United Arab Emirates.

In a statement, Manca said: “The idea of UAE One was born in 2020, during a very special meeting between me and a sheikh of the United Arab Emirates on vacation in Italy.

“The sultan was very clear and categorical, he wanted something really special and unique.”

The mega-yacht is also loaded with plenty of exploration vehicles two seaplanes, three jet skies, two helicopters, and a U-Worx Research submarine. Picture: Steve Kozloff

UAE One is inspired by historic defence ships, yet its curving lines distinguishes it from other vessels on the high seas.

It also stands over 130 feet tall and has tinted windows for extra privacy in true military style.

With nine decks and a total area of slightly over 30,000 square feet, the monster yacht is designed to give guests, diplomats, and kings the finest experience possible.

There is an owner’s suite, eight cabins, and 14 mini suites within.

The staff has 35 cabins as well.

The main deck, meanwhile, has a beautiful 18-metre geometric swimming pool.

There are also several outdoor lounges for sundowners, a platform for ocean swims, and a wellness centre with a spa on board.

What happens with abandoned factories in Russia? (PHOTOS)

Likyorka in Tula

abandoned mega yacht

A former distillery in Tula has become a favorite recreation spot for local residents. The plant was built in 1903 and produced alcohol until the late 1990s, when, unexpectedly for everyone, it went bankrupt. The decision was made to convert its old red-brick buildings into a shopping and entertainment center, and the outcome turned out to be far better than anyone expected.

The old wine warehouses are now filled with cafes, restaurants and trendy shops. The factory smokestack is covered with a huge portrait of Leo Tolstoy, whose Yasnaya Polyana estate is located nearby. The most frequently photographed art object here is a huge flea that Levsha is trying to smack with a shoe (a reference to Nikolai Leskov's story about a skilled Tula craftsman). It is not so much a flea as a space monster!

Melnitsa loft quarter in Novosibirsk

abandoned mega yacht

The neighborhood surrounding a flour mill in Novosibirsk has turned into a center of modern design and furniture showrooms. In 1910, the five-storey mill was one of the first brick buildings in the city (which was called Novo-Nikolayevsk at the time). It produced pasta, bread rings and bagels.

The pasta factory is still here, but the building of the mill, which had not been used for a long time, has been handed over to young designers. The original walls have been preserved, but new floors have been added and the interior has been completely redone. It now serves as a venue for various design-related events.

Art Quarter in Ufa

abandoned mega yacht

The Art Quarter public space describes itself as “the center of Ufa that never was.” Just several years ago, it housed an old tea-packing factory, a shoe factory and a printing house, which with time had fallen into disrepair. The image of disuse and neglect they projected was compounded by decrepit warehouses and the peeling facades of garages.

abandoned mega yacht

The Art Quarter has united several buildings in the historical part of the city into a single space, dividing them into squares. These include a large area for outdoor events, an amphitheater, a park with benches and sports grounds where you can enjoy a coffee in one of the numerous courtyards. The former factory buildings are painted with bright graffiti, while the second level consists of construction containers that will also soon be converted into an art space.

Hampton hotel in Volgograd

abandoned mega yacht

It might be hard to believe, but this modern hotel in Volgograd is a restored factory administration building. When the current owner came into its possession, the building was in a depressing state with boarded-up windows and dilapidated facades, while the soil beneath the building was beginning to sink.

At first, the architects planned to demolish it, but in the end they managed to resolve all its issues, turning this Soviet-era building into a luxury hotel.

MAKARONKA in Rostov-on-Don

abandoned mega yacht

This pasta factory operated from the 19th century until the mid-2000s. After this, it stood abandoned for some time before becoming a place popular with young artists. It now houses an experimental theater, an exhibition hall and numerous shops and cafes.

Shpagin factory in Perm

This building, which once housed a repair plant, now serves as a venue for the Diaghilev Festival of Theater and Music, a tour guide school and various exhibitions. The reconstruction of the plant was supervised by SPEECH, a prominent Moscow design bureau. In the future, the building is expected to house a contemporary art gallery, PERMM, and a library.

Sevkabel port in St. Petersburg

abandoned mega yacht

One of the most visited places in St. Petersburg is a former cable plant on Vasilyevsky Island. It was thanks to this plant that Moscow and St. Petersburg were connected by a telegraph line and that the northern capital got street lighting. After a restructuring in 2016, the plant no longer needed this part of its premises, which were handed over to the city.

Today, it is a popular spot for watching sunsets and sunrises on the shores of the Gulf of Finland and lazing around on cozy bean bags in the summer. During the winter, its main attraction is a large ice rink and local street food. The site’s industrial past is celebrated with huge reels that are scattered across its territory.

Museum of Water in St. Petersburg

abandoned mega yacht

What a brilliant idea to place a water museum in a water tower! This building dates back to the mid-19th century, but it was hardly ever used for its intended purpose and ended up standing idle most of the time. It belongs to the local Vodokanal water supply company.

abandoned mega yacht

In the early 2000s, architects gave the old water tower a new lease of life and converted it into an exhibition space dedicated to water. Most of the building was preserved in its original form, but the side staircase was covered with a glass dome for safety reasons.

Flacon design factory in Moscow

The plant in 2009.

The plant in 2009.

Moscow has many historic industrial buildings that have been converted into art spaces and offices. One of the first to undergo such a transformation, back in 2009, was Flacon. A 19th century perfume factory (known as the Kalinin crystal factory during Soviet times) that went bankrupt in the early 1990s has been turned into a contemporary art center. With showrooms, installations and food trucks, it has just about everything any urban hipster could hope for.

1830 Factory in Balashikha

abandoned mega yacht

The historical center of the town of Balashikha outside Moscow is home to a former cotton spinning factory that was built in 1830. In the 1980s, the factory was unable to cope with the changes brought by perestroika and shut down. The revamped factory building has turned into one of the most popular places in the city and is used for film screenings, exhibitions and sporting activities.
