Baia Yachts

Speed is an integral part of Baia Yachts’ DNA. Located near Naples, Italy, this shipyard builds luxury high performance yachts to 31 meters in length capable running up to 50 knots.

History of Baia Yachts

Baia Yachts’ roots began in 1961 with the Mericraft recreational boat-building factory in Naples. In 1968, Mericraft, which specialised in small wooden day cruisers, moved to the nearby town of Baia, which in ancient times had been a naval base for the Roman navy. In 1971, the Capasso family became a client of the shipyard but, after a strike the following year, ended up taking ownership. The family changed the yard’s name to Cantieri di Baia Spa – Mericraft, which later became Baia Yachts.

An “early adopter” of composite construction, Baia designed high-speed hulls that were perfect platforms for Arneson surface drive propulsion. The shipyard hit a high point in 1983, when American performance boat guru Don Aronow designed the hull for Baia’s B50 model. In 1990, a B50 won the famous Venice to Montecarlo race. Baia went on to launch larger high performance models, and even has a “green” motor yacht series, the Sevolution range, on its design boards.

Notable Yachts

The Baia Atlantica 80 is a successful example of the shipyard’s semi-custom luxury yacht range. Designed by Albert Ascenzi and Carlo Galeazzi, this 25-metre “Coupe” provides speeds of up to 80 knots.

Galeazzi and Ascenzi also collaborated with Baia on the design of its One Hundred model, a 31-metre luxury superyacht, which debuted in 2009. The next hull in the series, Mirage , which launched in 2010 with triple 2,430-horsepower MTU diesels, delivered an impressive top speed of 50 knots.

The Baia History

With over fifty years’ experience producing high performance contemporary luxury motor yachts, Baia Yachts has firmly established itself as one of Italy’s leading companies in yacht production. Baia’s passionate attention to detail and commitment to innovation has placed the company at the forefront of many advances of yacht design over the years. Their continual efforts to improve their line has propelled Baia from their origins as a diminutive company building wooden hulled day cruisers for local buyers in Naples to an internationally recognized powerhouse producing a wide range of all-fiberglass yachts valued for their outstanding performance and luxurious accommodations.  Baia Yachts’ history begins in 1961 with Mericraft, a small facility producing wooden boats in Naples. In 1968, the company relocated to Baia, a port on the Gulf of Naples with an established seafaring tradition that provided an abundance of talented artisans. Management problems threatened the completion of a restoration project for the Capasso family, and in 1972, the Capassos purchased the shipyard and rechristened it Cantieri di Baia. The company launched their revolutionary yacht Pascià in 1997, a vessel notable for her wide round stern, fiberglass structure and hull, and elegant teak decking and interior. 1980 marked a turning point in Baia production, when the company began making boats entirely out of counter molded fiberglass. Their new motoryacht, the B81, which sat low in the water and featured an attractive line, enjoyed such popularity that the company went on to produce 106 models over the next 10 years. The 1983 launch of Baia’s new motor yacht series B50, a fast yacht with brilliant performance and elegant sleek lines that was extremely popular in the American market, propelled the company to international recognition. Baia made the strategic decision to concentrate on the production of large-sized Open superyachts in 1986, in a move to meet rising domestic demand and spread into new markets. The company’s B80 superyacht, released six years later, was well-received by the international community; its renewed technologically advanced version Open cruiser sails the seas at 50 knots to this day. The same year the company joined the world of cabin cruisers with the production of their first 105′ Baia super yacht. The next several decades saw Baia Yachts continuing its foray into international markets as it opened dealerships around the world. Divers and an underwater drone searched Tuesday for six people, including a British tech tycoon and international banker, believed trapped when a luxury yacht sank off Sicily.

The 56-metre (185 feet) yacht "Bayesian" was anchored with 10 crew and 12 passengers on board when it was struck by a waterspout mini-tornado, before dawn on Monday.

Fifteen people, including a woman and her one-year-old baby, were rescued. The body of one man -- reported to be the yacht's chef -- was found.

Among the six missing were UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy.

The passengers were guests of Lynch -- sometimes referred to as Britain's Bill Gates -- to celebrate his acquittal in a massive US fraud case.

While Italy's coastguard said the search continued without a break, Captain Vincenzo Zagarola said it was "difficult to imagine" it would end well.

Experts and officials have described the sinking as an "extroardinary" event.

The search was made difficult by the British-flagged yacht lying largely intact on the seabed some 50 metres down.

Divers take one minute to get down and another minute to get back. They are restricted to 12 minutes for each dive because of the water pressure, according to fire service spokesman Luca Cari.

Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was among those rescued, according to Salvo Cocina, head of Sicily's Civil Protection Agency.

As well as Bloomer, who testified for Lynch in the US case, the missing included Lynch's lawyer Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda, according to law firm Clifford Chance.

Lynch, 59, was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

It emerged Tuesday that a co-defendant, former Autonomy executive Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car on Saturday in England.

- 'Tight spaces' -

Divers trained to work in tight spaces were flown in from Rome and Sardinia late Monday. 

A first, nighttime search of the wreck failed, with firefighters saying early Tuesday that furniture was blocking their way.

Marco Tilotta, from the Palermo fire service divers' unit, told AFP search efforts were concentrated on getting inside the sleeping and living areas of the yacht.

"The spaces inside the boat are very tight and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward, just as it is very difficult to find alternative routes," said Cari, from the fire service. 

The vessel was moored off Porticello, east of Palermo, when violent winds and rains suddenly swept up the coast.

"It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind, and shortly after it went down," survivor Charlotte Golunski told ANSA news agency.

Golunski, board director at Luminance, a company founded by Lynch, lost hold of her one-year-old daughter in the waves "for two seconds", before grabbing her again.

"Lots of people were screaming" in the dark, said Golunski, who scrambled onto a life raft.

- Mast 'snapped' -

Reportedly owned by Lynch's family, "Bayesian" was built by Italian shipbuilding firm Perini Navi in 2008. Its 75-metre mast was the world's tallest aluminium sailing mast, according to the Charter World website.

A photograph posted on social media by the Baia Santa Nicolicchia bar in Porticello showed the yacht lit up, its towering mast shining in the darkness, just a few hours before the storm hit.

A waterspout is a column that descends from a cloud to form a rotating mixture of wind and water, often during severe thunderstorms.

Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP it was an "extraordinary event".

"This is a large, luxurious superyacht that has founded quite quickly in a touristy, well-known sailing area off Sicily. It's pretty unprecedented."

Karsten Borner, captain of a yacht anchored nearby at the time of the storm, said there was a "very strong hurricane gust" and he battled to keep his vessel steady.

Borner saw the yacht's mast "bend and then snap", according to Italy's Corriere della Sera daily.

Italian authorities have opened a probe, while the UK's marine accident investigation branch sent four inspectors to Palermo.

Those searching for the six people who remain missing after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily are hoping "for a miracle" amid the rescue efforts.

The Bayesian , a 56-meter (183-ft) vessel, capsized early on Monday, Aug. 19, while carrying 22 people and moored about a half mile from the coast of Porticello, according to a statement from the Italian coast guard previously obtained by PEOPLE.

The search now continues for the missing people on board, but a rescue operations source tells PEOPLE it's "unlikely anyone will be found during the course of today," Wednesday, Aug. 21, "because this yacht is designed differently from traditional ones in that the main cabins are at the stern." 

"There's very much hope for a miracle; everyone expects them to be trapped inside, but the hope is for there to be some form of air pocket," the source says.

"There will be searching around the vessel, thinking that, like the cook, someone could be found near the vessel, but that's highly unlikely as well, because after a few days they would rise and float," the rescue operation source adds. 

According to Italian media outlets, a man's body was found after the sinking and later identified as the yacht’s chef, per  Reuters . 

"It's extremely difficult because while the boat is still intact, the furniture and debris are all over the place, blocking all passages and entrances. So they have to go through the first floor of the galley and go down the stairs at the other end, then travel through the ground floor of the yacht to the other side in order to get to the cabins," the source tells PEOPLE.

Another rescue operations source told PEOPLE that divers' inspection of the wreckage site revealed that the hull of the superyacht is "intact and the mainmast has no damage, at least for the first 50 meters," of the 72-meter pole.

"To rule out structural failures of the hull, marine investigators will have to examine the side resting on the sandy seabed from the inside, but already the hypothesis is emerging that an enormous amount of water entered in a very short time, as this would be the only thing that could [be] causing the hull to rear up which, as several survivors told the investigators, [making] the ship sink in literally 60 seconds,​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​" the source added.

The six missing passengers include British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and New York City-based lawyer Christopher Morvillo, who helped Lynch get acquitted in his recent fraud case . 

Lynch went to trial, and won, after he was accused of financial fraud in connection to the sale of Autonomy — a business software company Lynch founded — to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, and a source previously told PEOPLE the group had traveled to the Aeolian Islands to celebrate the win.

Morvillo's wife Neda, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, along with Lynch's daughter Hannah are also among the missing. Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was one of the 15 passengers rescued, the Italian coast guard and local sources said. Eight of the rescued were taken to local hospitals.

Also among the rescued was Charlotte Golunski , who said she used "all my strength" to save her 1-year-old daughter Sophie after a wave briefly took her out to sea, per Italian newspaper  la Repubblica .

The families of US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda, have released a statement after the couple were confirmed to have died when the yacht capsized and sank.

The statement reads: "We are completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda, and our collective hearts go out to all the families who have also been affected by this senseless tragedy.

"Chris and Neda were each widely respected for their professional successes, Chris as a distinguished attorney and Neda as a skilled jewellery designer, but their true talents were that of mother and father, son and daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt and dear friends to so many. 

"Neda and Chris lived their lives as devoted, loving parents who always put their daughters and families first. Their passing is a tremendous loss for our family and for the countless people who knew and loved them both.

"We extend our deepest gratitude to the Italian rescue services for their unwavering dedication and to Clifford Chance for all the support they have provided.

"As we grieve this enormous loss, our primary focus remains on Chris and Neda's daughters and other loved ones, and we respectfully request privacy."

Mike Lynch knew he would likely spend the rest of his life in federal prison if he lost his US fraud trial, says a journalist who covered the case.

The British tech tycoon, who today was confirmed to be one of the casualties of Monday's superyacht sinking in Sicily, was cleared of fraud charges he faced over the $11bn (£8.6bn) sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Mr Lynch had been accused of inflating the value of Autonomy ahead of its sale but was found not guilty on all counts by a jury in San Francisco.

He faced more than 20 years in prison if convicted, with Sunday Times journalist Danny Fortson, who interviewed Mr Lynch last month, telling Sky News that the businessman framed his potential conviction as a "near-death experience".

He said: "I was with him for about two and a half hours after covering the 12-week trial throughout, and he was really just kind of reeling in a good way, trying to process the fact that he actually had got this new lease on life.

"He really framed it all as almost having this kind of near-death experience of knowing that he was probably going to lose this case, and if he lost it, he would probably spend the rest of his life in a federal prison far away from his family and his loved ones. 

"And then to win this case and then 73 days later, after having, as you say in his words, getting a second life, to have it end so tragically, it's hard to believe."

Mike Lynch had considered selling the Bayesian superyacht earlier this year but changed his mind when acquitted in a major fraud trial in the US, according to a report.

The billionaire businessman put the vessel up for sale in March but later withdrew it in July, after being cleared in June,  the Telegraph reports.

Industry sources reportedly told the newspaper that he'd planned to spend the summer on the yacht before assessing whether to try and sell it again in autumn.

A businessman who knew Jonathan Bloomer for more than 20 years has described him as a "very humble" man who always had time to help people.

Andrew Carrett told Sky News the bank chairman was a "very supportive individual" and "very generous with his time".

"I think a lot of people would echo that. I think he's going to be a great loss," he said.

Mr Carrett added that you "don't expect to wave goodbye to people on holiday, you expect to see them two or three weeks later coming back through the door with their cases".

"It's very tragic what's happened. Clearly he will be missed."

Mr Bloomer, whose body was identified today along with four others who were onboard the Bayesian superyacht, has helped other businesses to grow as well as well as supporting charities over his career, Mr Carrett said.

"He's a very humble individual in some ways... he will be greatly missed by a lot of people."

Jonathan Bloomer was a "friend and mentor to many", the chief executive of Morgan Stanley has said.

Mr Bloomer and his wife Judy are among the six people to have been confirmed to have died after the sinking of the Bayesian.

Ted Pick said: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic news.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the Bloomer family and all those affected by this tragedy.

"Jonathan's leadership and experience helped the firm manage a period of complex change for our international businesses.

"He has been a friend and mentor to many and we will all greatly miss his wise counsel and spirit of kindness."

Mike Lynch was a "remarkable" man who lost 12 years of his life to a "pointless legal argument", his friend and business partner has said.

In a new interview with Sky News, David Tabizel, who co-founded Autonomy with Mr Lynch, said the tycoon had an "inner child", loved video games and had a life-sized train set in his garden.

"He had a remarkable set of personality traits which we rarely see in Britain," he added, saying Mr Lynch's "lower-middle class background" contributed to his "hunger and ambition".

"He was very, very, very focused on the truth, which is why it was so difficult and so strange seeing what happened to him the last 12 years," Mr Tabizel said.

Mr Tabizel said the lengthy legal case against Mr Lynch - which started when Hewlett-Packard accused him of fraud by overstating the value of Autonomy when he sold it to them in 2011 - reminded him of "the Post Office scandal" but against one man.

"I never heard him lie. I never heard him exaggerate. He was interested in truth," he said. 

"To me, it reminds me of the Post Office scandal. But this time against one man... with a brain the size of a planet and hundreds of millions of pounds in the bank."

Mr Tabizel said his friend's death was "such a loss" for his family.

"We should be celebrating his legacy, and to lose the last 12 years of this wonderful man's life for a pointless legal argument, which comes down to nothing more than greed - it's crazy," he said.

Paying tribute to Mr Lynch, Mr Tabizel said: "I love that man. And and he should be celebrated as a hero."

The family of Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy, have released a statement after the couple were confirmed to have died in the yacht disaster.

The statement reads: "We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services and everyone who helped tirelessly in this rescue operation.

"Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

"Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.

"This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder. Our only ask is that our family's privacy is respected at this time."

BBC director-general Tim Davie says the corporation is "deeply saddened by the awful news" that at least six people have died in the yacht disaster.

"Mike Lynch was an outstanding BBC director who made a major contribution during his time on the board, from 2007 to 2012," he said in a statement.

"Wise, generous and insightful, he played a particularly key role in accelerating our transformation as a digital organisation.

"Our thoughts are with his family and all others involved."

Questions have been raised about whether the sunken yacht will be salvaged in the investigation into the incident.

Earlier, the Italian coastguard said a decision on whether to raise the vessel from the seabed was "not a topic on the agenda" at the moment - but "will be" in the future.

Nick Barke, head of salvage operations at Boats.co.uk, a boat sales and services company, said the "only real way of knowing" why the yacht sank would be to lift it to the surface.

However, he acknowledged this would be an "expensive and complicated process".

On what that process would be, Mr Barke said divers would attach straps to the boat before hauling it upright and bringing it out of the water.

A neighbour of Mike Lynch has paid tribute to him and his family following the confirmation of the tech tycoon's death today.

Ruth Leigh said despite Mr Lynch and his wife Angela being "wealthy, influential people" they "never put any airs or graces on" in the 15 years she knew them.

Mrs Leigh described how Mr Lynch was a valued member of their village community and would give a Remembrance Day reading at the local church every year.

"From the start they were fantastic neighbours, very friendly," she told Sky News.

"In this very small, rural community, everybody knows everybody, and Mike from the very start made a point of getting to know everybody.

"He maintained fences, extended the estate, looked after the menagerie, and really invested in the place.

"One of the first things we noticed about Mike and Angela was that even though they are wealthy, influential people, they never put any airs or graces on.

"They'd always take the trouble to remember your name and ask after your partner or children. They didn't have to do that. We had a great deal of respect for them."

She added: "They touched a lot of people. They were well thought of, kind, generous, hospitable people."

With the search for Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch still ongoing, Mrs Leigh said she can't imagine what Mrs Lynch and her other daughter, 21-year-old Esme, are going through.

"Angela is alive, which is wonderful, and Esme wasn't on the boat, I don't think," she added.

"But to hear that, our own child has turned 18 and just got their A-level results, words fail me, what Angela must be going through. I can't articulate what that must be like."

LONDON:  The British-flagged luxury yacht The Bayesian capsized early on Monday (Aug 19) off the coast of southern Sicily with 22 people aboard.

Here's what is known about the 12 passengers and 10 crew members, believed to have hailed from Canada, France, Ireland, Myanmar, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States.

THE MISSING

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are among those unaccounted for, according to Italy's Civil Protection Agency.

Lynch, once dubbed the British "Bill Gates", founded software firm Autonomy in the 1990s but its US$11 billion sale to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 saw him face fraud charges in the US.

A jury in San Francisco acquitted the 59-year-old and a co-defendant of all charges in June.

It is understood he organised the yacht trip as a post-trial celebration for family, as well as some of his lawyers and employees.

His missing daughter was set to study English at Oxford University after finishing school this year, The Times reported.

Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old British chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, a charity trustee, are also among those missing , UK insurer Hiscox said on Tuesday.

American lawyer Chris Morvillo - a partner at the high-profile Clifford Chance law firm, who worked on Lynch's recent US fraud trial - is also missing along with his wife Neda.

Confirming the pair were not accounted for in a statement on Tuesday, a Clifford Chance spokesperson said: "We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident."

ONE BODY FOUND

The body of one man was found in the sea a few hours after the disaster unfolded off Porticello, east of Palermo.

Officials have said he was the yacht's chef, with different media outlets naming him as either Ricardo or Recaldo Thomas.

He is reportedly Canadian-born and had been living in Antigua.

THE SURVIVORS

Lynch's 57-year-old wife, Angela Bacares, who is also Hannah's mother, was among the survivors, officials have confirmed.

She was seen in a wheelchair after suffering abrasions on her feet, according to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

The paper reported she had been taken to a regional hospital, where she told doctors the boat began to tilt at around 4am local time, waking Bacares and her husband.

She had then climbed up to the deck to assess the situation when the vessel suddenly started to capsize, the paper said.

Briton Charlotte Golunski, 35 - a partner at Lynch's investment firm Invoke Capital who previously worked at Autonomy - her partner James Emslie and her one-year-old daughter also survived.

Golunski told La Repubblica they made it out alive because they were on deck when the yacht sank, describing in dramatic detail holding her baby above the surface of the sea to save her.

She said a lifeboat then inflated and 11 people eventually climbed in, with all three family members unharmed.

Ayla Ronald, 36, a London-based lawyer for Clifford Chance originally from New Zealand who also worked on Lynch's fraud case, "thankfully survived the incident", the law firm confirmed.

It noted her partner, believed to be named Matthew Fletcher, also made it out alive.

Her father Lin Ronald told various media outlets that she had texted him that they were "very shocked at the moment".

Other media reports have said another New Zealander, James Caulfield, 51, survived.

Meanwhile, Irish citizen Sasha Murray, 29, injured her right foot in the tragedy, according to the Irish Times.

Frenchman Matthew Griffith, 22, is also said to have survived.

The boat's crew are believed to include Sri Lankans as well as a citizen of Myanmar named as 39-year-old Myin Htun Kyaw, according to reports.

Five bodies have been recovered from the wreck of the superyacht that sank in a storm early Monday morning, according to NBC News and Sky News.

• British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International Chair Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were all reported missing after a luxury yacht they were on board sank.
• The Italian coast guard on Tuesday confirmed to Sky News that a person who was confirmed dead earlier this week was Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef.

Divers recovered four bodies Wednesday from inside the superyacht, Salvatore Cocina, director of the island's Civil Protection Agency, confirmed to NBC News. Cocina later told Sky News that a fifth body had been found and was being brought to shore.

Rescue teams did not immediately identify the names or sex of the victims.

The total number of victims now stands at six, after one person was confirmed dead earlier this week.

One person remains missing. Specialist divers had warned that the operation to search for the missing passengers was proving challenging.

Italian emergency services had gained access to some rooms on the ship, but were struggling to access sleeping cabins where those onboard may have been at the time of the disaster. This had prevented the divers from seeing if anyone is inside.

The wreck is lying at a tilt at a depth of approximately 50 meters (164 feet), while narrow access points, thick glass windows, and a range of objects and electrical cables are obstructing access.

Divers involved in the operation told NBC News on Wednesday that the depth of the wreck meant they only had 10 minutes to search the vessel before having to return to the surface.

Those reported missing are British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chair Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, charity trustee Judy Bloomer; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo.

The Italian coast guard on Tuesday confirmed to Sky News that the man who died during the incident was Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef.

According to reports from eyewitnesses and survivors, the ship was violently rocked by a storm at around 4 a.m. local time on Monday while it was anchored near the Sicilian port of Porticello. It sank rapidly after capsizing.

Lynch was acquitted less than three months ago by a U.S. court on 15 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud, relating to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett Packard in 2011. Lynch had long denied artificially inflating the value of the company ahead of its $11.7 billion sale and was in 2023 extradited from the U.K. to stand trial in the U.S.

The trip on the U.K.-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian is thought to have marked a celebration of Lynch's acquittal. Morvillo represented Lynch in the case, while Bloomer — who serves in a nonexecutive role as chair of Morgan Stanley's European branch — testified for the defense.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was on the ship and was rescued along with 14 others, including a 1-year-old baby and her parents.

In a separate incident on Saturday, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy and a co-defendant in Lynch's trial, died after being hit by a car while on a run in Cambridgeshire, England, Chamberlain's lawyer  told the Reuters news agency .
