Israel and Hezbollah exchange heavy fire in major escalation

Israel has said it carried out a wave of pre-emptive strikes across southern Lebanon to thwart a large-scale rocket and drone attack by Hezbollah.

Jets destroyed thousands of the Iran-backed armed group’s rocket launchers on Sunday morning, Israel's military said. Hezbollah and its Amal allies said three fighters had been killed.

Hezbollah said it had still managed to fire 320 rockets and drones at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of a senior commander. According to Israel's military, one Israeli navy soldier was killed.

The US says it is working to avoid any further escalation after 10 months of hostilities that have raised fears of an all-out war.

There have been almost daily exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border since the day after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza on 7 October.

There was no breakthrough at the latest round of US-backed Gaza peace talks in Cairo.

Before leaving, Hamas said it rejected new Israeli conditions and accused Israel of backtracking on promises. Israel denies changing its demands since a last round of talks in early July.

Hezbollah has said it is acting in support of the Palestinian group, which is also backed by Iran. Both Hamas and Hezbollah are proscribed as terrorist organisations by Israel, the UK and other countries.

Since October, more than 560 people have been reported killed according to Lebanon's health ministry, the vast majority of them Hezbollah fighters, while 26 civilians and 23 soldiers have been killed in Israel, authorities report.

The UN says almost 200,000 people have also been displaced on both sides of the border.

Israel's attack on Hezbollah at around 04:30 (01:30 GMT) on Sunday was its biggest since the full-scale war between them in 2006.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said about 100 fighter jets had “struck and destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launcher barrels” in more than 40 areas of southern Lebanon.

The strikes went ahead after "extensive preparation" for a large-scale aerial attack by Hezbollah was detected, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that Israeli aircraft had struck Beaufort Castle, the Bir Kalb area, and the outskirts of the towns of Ain Qana, Kfar Fila, Louaizeh, Bsalia, Kfar Melki, Sajd and Sarba.

A resident of the town of Zibqeen said it had “felt like the apocalypse”.

One person was killed in a drone strike on a car in Khiam, the Lebanese ministry of public health said. The Amal movement said one of its fighters from the village had been killed.

The ministry also said an Israeli attack on the village of Tiri had killed two people. Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of two fighters from nearby Haris, without providing any details.

"What happened today is not the end of the story,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting.

As well as destroying short-range rockets, Mr Netanyahu said, the IDF intercepted all of the drones which Hezbollah had “launched at a strategic target in the centre of the country”.

“[Sheikh Hassan] Nasrallah in Beirut and [Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei in Tehran need to know that this is an additional step in changing the situation in the north,” he warned the leaders of Hezbollah and Iran.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz said he had told dozens of his counterparts worldwide that Israel did “not seek a full-scale war” but would “do whatever it takes to protect our citizens”.

Not long after the Israeli strikes, Hezbollah said it had targeted and hit 11 Israeli military facilities in Israel and the occupied Golan Heights with more than 320 Katyusha rockets.

It described the barrage as a response to the assassination of senior military commander Fuad Shukr, who was killed in an Israeli strike in Beirut on 30 July.

The group said the operation had been “completed and accomplished” and it dismissed as "empty" Israel’s statements that its strikes on Sunday had thwarted a larger attack.

Video footage showed explosions in the sky as incoming rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defence system.

Later, the IDF announced that an Israeli Navy soldier had fallen "during combat in northern Israel", without providing further details.

Israeli media say he was killed in an incident involving a Hezbollah drone and an Iron Dome interceptor in the vicinity of a Dvora patrol boat, about 4km from the Lebanese border.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised address on Sunday evening that the group had targeted a military intelligence base about 110km (68 miles) into Israeli territory, which was only 1.5km (0.9 miles) away from Tel Aviv.

He said Hezbollah had been able to carry out its attack as planned, and all drones had been launched successfully, entering Israeli airspace, according to a Reuters translation.

He warned that the group would respond again if the results were deemed to be not enough.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati - whose government has little influence over Hezbollah - said he was “holding a series of contacts with Lebanon’s friends to stop the escalation”.

He called for a halt to the “Israeli aggression” and the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution which ended the 2006 war.

Mr Mikati also emphasised Lebanon’s support for international efforts to broker a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas.

The White House national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said the hope was that the latest fighting would not lead to a regional war.

The US sees an agreement as key to de-escalating tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border because Hezbollah has said it will only stop the hostilities once the fighting in Gaza ends.

Rio Yachts: the new Le Mans 45 and 50 in world premiere at Cannes and Genoa

Exciting news from Rio Yachts, which will unveil the new Le Mans range with a strong presence and two world premieres at the September boat shows. Both the Le Mans 45 and the flagship of the range, the Le Mans 50, will be on display and available for visits.

It promises to be an explosive season, starting on September 10th with the Cannes Yachting Festival (boats on display at Port Vieux) and continuing with the Genoa International Boat Show from September 19th.

The new Le Mans range

An evolution of the Daytona line, the new Le Mans range has been created by Rio Yachts to expand the usability of the boats, adding a domed Hard-Top that fully protects the cockpit. The result is a boat that appears even sportier and allows for long cruises with a high level of comfort.

Thirteen meters in length for a yacht that offers the features of a significantly larger vessel. The brand-new Le Mans 45 boasts an enormous cockpit that, thanks to its two fold-down terraces, extends the overall width to well beyond 5 meters. In this magnificent space, the seating can be rearranged to create the preferred deck layout.

The galley is located outside, integrated into the bar unit positioned just a step away from the large outdoor dining table. The side-decks provide safe and comfortable access to the bow, revealing a large secondary sunbathing area opposite a seat formed from the bow itself.

The interiors are designed by the renowned SY Design and are very bright, thanks also to the choice of an open and multifunctional layout. There are two cabins, accompanied by a perfectly designed bathroom, making the Le Mans 45 a highly appealing yacht.

Two possible engine options, either inboard or outboard, allow the Le Mans 45 to achieve a maximum speed of 38 or 44 knots.

Technical Specs

The flagship of the new range, the Le Mans 50, represents not only the largest boat in this line but also the one offering the greatest customization options for its owner. It can be equipped with a tender garage, a stern tender lift, and a choice of woods and leathers, among many other features.

Designed by Marino Alfani, this vessel boasts sleek lines and a distinctly sporty design. It can be powered either by a pair of Yanmar engines, each delivering 550 horsepower, or by a triple setup of Mercury Verado V10 400 engines, offering impressive performance.

The space on board is immense, and the huge cockpit can also be extended with the two opening terraces, providing guests with an exceptionally sublime connection to the sea.

Naufragio Bayesian, il comandante dello yacht James Cutfield ha lasciato l'Italia

Lo skipper del veliero, affondato il 19 agosto davanti alle coste palermitane provocando la morte di 7 persone, è sotto indagine per naufragio colposo e omicidio colposo plurimo. Su di lui non pendono provvedimenti restrittivi: Cutfield e gli altri due indagati sono quindi liberi di attendere l'evolversi delle indagini da qualsiasi paese scelgano di risiedere

James Cutfield, comandante del veliero Bayesian affondato il 19 agosto davanti alle coste palermitane, ha lasciato l’Italia. Lo skipper, indagato per naufragio colposo e omicidio colposo plurimo, è partito a bordo di un volo privato diretto in Spagna. L’uomo ha infatti deciso di fare ritorno a Maiorca, dove vive con la moglie, e di attendere lì l’evolversi delle indagini in corso. Nei suoi confronti non ci sono infatti provvedimenti restrittivi ed eventuali atti istruttori potranno essere svolti anche nei paesi in cui ha scelto di risiedere. Lo stesso vale per gli altri due indagati, l’ufficiale di macchina Tim Parker Eaton e Matthew Griffiths, membro dell’equipaggio che la notte del naufragio era di guardia in plancia. Il primo è andato in Spagna con Cutfield, il secondo aveva già raggiunto Nizza nel pomeriggio di ieri. Anche altri componenti dell’equipaggio e alcune hostess hanno lasciato l’Italia verso diverse destinazioni.  

A breve le autopsie sulle vittime

La notte del naufragio hanno perso la vita 7 persone. Il magnate inglese Mike Linch, la figlia 18enne, il presidente della Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer e sua moglie Anne Elizabeth Judith Bloomer, l'avvocato Chris Morvillo e la moglie Nada e il cuoco di bordo Ricardo Thomas sono rimasti intrappolati nelle loro cabine mentre lo yacht a vela colava a picco davanti alle coste palermitane. Sui loro corpi i pm di Palermo che indagano sull’accaduto hanno disposto le autopsie che saranno svolte dai medici del Policlinico del capoluogo siciliano.

Sul registro degli indagati i nomi sono tre: Cutfield, Eaton e Griffiths sono sotto inchiesta per naufragio colposo e omicidio colposo plurimo. Per gli inquirenti il capitano non avrebbe adottato le misure necessarie a mettere in sicurezza l'imbarcazione e non avrebbe prestato adeguato soccorso ai passeggeri. L’ufficiale di macchina Tim Parker Eaton non avrebbe invece attivato i sistemi di chiusura dei portelloni della nave: una mancanza a causa della quale l’acqua del mare è entrata prima nella sala macchine, provocando un black out, e poi nell’intero veliero. Il marinaio in plancia Matthew Griffiths, infine, è accusato di non aver avvertito in tempo della tempesta in arrivo i passeggeri del Bayesian.

Naufrage du yacht de Mike Lynch en Sicile : le corps d'Hannah, 18 ans, fille du magnat britannique, a été retrouvé

Le dernier corps recherché a été retrouvé ce 23 août 2024 dans l’épave du super yacht qui a coulé ce lundi.

Les pompiers italiens ont retrouvé vendredi en milieu de journée le corps de la fille du magnat britannique de la tech Mike Lynch, dernière disparue du naufrage du yacht survenu lundi en Sicile, qui a fait sept morts au total, dont le milliardaire.

Qui sont les victimes ?

Après la découverte d'un premier corps lundi, celui du cuisinier de bord, trois hommes et trois femmes étaient portés disparus à la suite du naufrage du "Bayesian" lundi à l'aube au large de Porticello, près de Palerme. Le corps de Mike Lynch, 59 ans, a été récupéré jeudi.

Ce richissime homme d'affaires, surnommé le "Bill Gates britannique" , fêtait avec ses amis, collaborateurs et avocats, sa relaxe en juin dans un procès pour fraude aux Etats-Unis qui aurait pu lui coûter des années de prison.

Sa fille Hannah, 18 ans, féministe convaincue selon ses amis, venait de passer ses examens de fin d'année et avait obtenu une place pour étudier la littérature anglaise à l'université d'Oxford, ont rapporté les médias britanniques.

Parmi les victimes figurent Jonathan Bloomer, le président du conseil d'administration de Morgan Stanley International - une branche de la banque américaine - et de l'assureur Hiscox, ainsi que son épouse Judy, et Chris Morvillo, un avocat qui a défendu Mike Lynch dans son procès aux Etats-Unis, avec son épouse Neda.

"Une longue série d'erreurs"

Le luxueux super voilier de 56 mètres a sombré en quelques minutes lundi à l'aube après le passage soudain d'une tornade. Quinze personnes ont été sauvées, dont six passagers.

La vitesse à laquelle le yacht a coulé et le fait que les autres bateaux autour de lui n'aient pas été touchés soulèvent des questions, notamment celle de savoir si la quille lestée, qui fait contrepoids à l'imposant mât, était abaissée ou relevée au moment de la tempête.

Le patron du groupe naval The italian sea group, propriétaire du chantier naval Perini Navi qui a construit le Bayesian, a pointé du doigt l'erreur humaine.

"Tout ce qui s'est passé révèle une longue série d'erreurs. Les passagers ne devaient pas être dans les cabines, le navire ne devait pas être à l'ancre" dans ces conditions météo, a déclaré Giovanni Costantino dans une interview jeudi au Corriere della Sera.

Remontée coûteuse

Le Bayesian, propriété de sa famille Lynch, était doté d'un mât de 75 mètres, le plus haut mât de voile en aluminium au monde, selon le site internet de Charter World.

La délicate et complexe opération pour le remonter à la surface coûterait probablement quelque 15 millions d'euros et prendrait "six à huit semaines", selon le responsable qui a dirigé l'opération de récupération du navire de croisière Costa Concordia, qui a sombré au large de l'Italie en 2012.

Pour récupérer le yacht, le mât pourrait être démonté sur le fond marin et le bateau serait ensuite soulevé entier à l'aide d'une grue géante et d'une équipe de 40 plongeurs spécialisés, a expliqué le Sud-Africain Nick Sloane au quotidien La Repubblica.

Affondato in 16 minuti: il ruolo dei compartimenti di aria.

Il Bayesian è affondato in soli 16 minuti. Un tempo davvero breve per uno yacht così grande. Come è stato possibile? Secondo l'esperto un ruolo cruciale è stato giocato da una cattiva gestione dei "compartimenti stagni".

I compartimenti stagni sono essenziali nella progettazione delle navi per garantire la sicurezza e la sopravvivenza in caso di entrata di acqua. I l Bayesian era dotato di sei compartimenti stagni, e secondo le norme di classificazione, era progettata per sopportare l'allagamento di due di questi compartimenti senza compromettere la galleggiabilità. Tuttavia, se più di due compartimenti venivano allagati rapidamente, la nave poteva affondare molto velocemente.

Nel caso specifico, i compartimenti di poppa (tra cui il locale macchine) erano separati da porte che avrebbero dovuto impedire l'ingresso dell'acqua. È probabile che qui ci fossero delle porte lasciate aperte, che abbiano impedito dunque ai compartimenti di fare il loro lavoro.

Secondo Prince, qunidi l'allagamento di più di due compartimenti in modo rapido avrebbe quindi causato l'affondamento in poco tempo.

Bayesian, le lacrime del capitano cutfield e le tre domande rimaste senza risposta, cosa (e come) c'entrano i servizi segreti gli affari di lynch e "il passeggero mancante" nodo risarcimenti, mike lynch morto, chi dovrà pagare i risarcimenti miliardari chiesti in tribunale da hewlett-packard la questione ora in mano agli eredi.
