Following a summer of record demand this year’s event was glitzier than ever.

By Irenie Forshaw

Luisine

Each September, thousands of yacht builders, designers and owners descend on Port Hercule for the Monaco Yacht Show. It is here, in the heart of the picturesque Côte d’Azur, that boat lovers make their annual pilgrimage to catch a glimpse of the world’s newest – and most exciting – vessels.

This year, the hotly anticipated event took place between September 28 and October 1. And, following a summer of record demand for superyachts spurred by the pandemic, the 2022 iteration was bigger and glitzier than ever.

With over 600 exhibitors showcasing 125 superyachts, there was no shortage of incredible boats on display. So, whether you’re considering taking the plunge and purchasing a yacht of your own, or you’re simply here to marvel at the latest builds, we’ve rounded up the most impressive vessels on display at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Project TIME

Project TIME yacht exterior

Kicking off our list of the biggest reveals at the Monaco Yacht Show is Project TIME. The 282-ft explorer yacht concept is the brainchild of German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen and Valentin Design.

Suited for cold and warm water expeditions, the ship has been designed to travel everywhere from Antarctica to the South Pacific Islands. Powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, Project Time would deliver a maximum speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 14 knots, and a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

Boasting a helipad platform, submarine, two lounges and even an onboard German brewery, this is no ordinary yacht. The extravagant vessel also features an extra wide owner’s duplex suite complete with two marble bathrooms and an expansive balcony.

Dutch shipyard Feadship unveiled its eleventh cutting-edge yacht concept at the show, Slice. Studio de Voogt was brought in for the project, with the ambitious goal of turning “the inside out and the outside in”. To this end, the design team fitted the yacht with a glass strip running from bow to stern, bathing the decks in natural light.

Unlike many yachts that are plagued by gloomy corridors and claustrophobic living spaces, the interiors onboard Slice are bright and breezy. At the heart of the yacht on the main deck is a sprawling 750-sq-ft atrium flanked by cascading circular balconies, which, according to Feadship is so much more than a lobby and instead becomes “a destination in its own right”.

In a sign of Feadship’s dedication to using the latest technology, Slice would be fitted with a propulsion system powered by four dual-fuel generators modified to run on both methanol and non-fossil diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil), with the generated power delivered to two Azimuthing pods.

Luisine yacht with helicopter

Our list of the best superyachts on display at Monaco Yacht Show would not be complete without mentioning Lusine. The 196-ft vessel is Heesen’s largest ever steel Fast Displacement motor yacht and features a sleek silhouette with black thermo-bonded dark glass windows to keep out prying eyes.

Perhaps most impressive of all is the touch-and-go helipad on the sundeck which can accommodate an Airbus H-135. Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design was brought in to mastermind the lavish interiors. Lusine comfortably sleeps twelve set across six spacious staterooms, each of which has been thoughtfully adorned with bespoke furnishings and elegant sculptures. The most exclusive abode is the owner’s apartment located up on the bridge deck which has its own staircase to ensure total privacy.

Come Together

Come Together yacht

Next up on our list is the first vessel in Amel’s new 60 Limited Edition Series. Designed by Espen Oeino International and built in the Netherlands, Come Together was delivered to her owner this Spring for an estimated €69.5m (approx. $68.6m).

The gleaming new superyacht spans 196 ft and features a teak deck, steel hull and aluminum superstructure. Winch Design is responsible for the laid-back yet elegant interiors that are reminiscent of a relaxed family home in shades of walnut and bronze.

Come Together has been fitted with a hybrid propulsion system for smooth, quiet cruising and features an expansive sun deck and 157-ft swim platform.

Winch Design and Heesen also unveiled XV67 at the Monaco Yacht Show – a brand new explorer yacht concept that builds on their XVenture design concept from four years ago.

The 187-ft vessel has been given a refreshed layout and updated with the latest technology. While the robust steel hull remains, she is 32 ft longer than her predecessor and the tenders have been moved to the open aft deck freeing up space for even larger guest cabins and an expansive three-story master stateroom.

As seems to be becoming commonplace onboard the newest superyachts, VX67 boasts a helipad (that functions as an al fresco cinema when not in use) and has space to store a personal submarine on deck.

Meyer took the Monaco Yacht Show as an opportunity to share the very first renderings of its sustainable One50 concept. The vessel – which was first unveiled a year ago at the 2021 show – is powered electrically by 25,000 kilowatts enabling her to reach a maximum speed of 23 knots.

After a year long wait to see what One50 could like, the renderings certainly don’t disappoint. Wellness is at the heart of the design; the 492-ft yacht features a retractable swimming pool, massage parlour, sauna and hammam. Other highlights include the top deck which is reserved entirely for the owner’s use and boasts an enormous suite complete with a private terrace.

Four Seasons Yacht

four seasons yacht rendering

Last but by no means least on our roundup of the most impressive vessels unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show is Four Seasons’ first branded yacht . Slated to set sail at the end of 2025, no expense has been spared by the luxury hotel group, with each suite costing a cool $4.2m to build.

The gigantic vessel will be 679 ft long and 88.6 ft wide with 14 decks and a total of 95 rooms and suites. While the initial launch is just one yacht, the order includes the option to add two further ships in the future – amounting to an eyewatering $1.1bn.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will build the Four Seasons yacht in Trieste before Tillberg Design of Sweden and London-based Martin Brudnizki are brought in to put their stamp on the interiors. As you would expect from the luxury hotel brand, the yacht will feature an array of facilities including gourmet restaurants, bars, and a full-service spa.

Monaco Yacht Show 2022: Highlights and reflections

Oct 6, 2022 | News

The industry gathered last week for the 31st annual Monaco Yacht Show , an international show dedicated to the world of superyachts. After a brief hiatus in 2020 due to the covid pandemic, the show returned with a refreshed approach in 2021, placing a greater focus on superyacht clientele, with categorised visitor passes to provide a more tailored experience. These passes, ‘Discover, Advise, and connect,’ returned this year, and on Wednesday (the show’s opening day), access to the dockside was invitation only, all part of the show’s new format.

This year more than 100 yachts were presented at the show from world-leading shipyards such as Lurssen, Benetti, Heesen and Sanlorenzo, and 550+ exhibitors were in attendance at the famous port. During the show, Sunseeker revealed its most significant investment in product development, and SuperyachtTimes ‘ annual show report revealed a total of 281 superyachts (new and used) were sold in the first half of 2022. Both are clear signs that the industry is still very much booming after its significant post-pandemic growth.

The greener, the better – a focus on sustainability

This year’s show placed an increased emphasis on sustainability, with the launch of a new exhibition area dedicated to companies that specialise in technology to reduce the environmental impact of superyachts. The ‘Sustainability hub’ included companies such as  GoodFuels, which develop high-quality, sustainable, scalable and affordable biofuels, and French-based  EODev , whose mission is to accelerate the ‘energy transition’ by providing reliable, efficient, and affordable industrial solutions.

Environmental credentials were also a key theme amongst many of the concept and new build announcements from leading shipbuilders in attendance.

  • Benetti announced their new concept, ‘Project Oro, ‘ which will be fitted with hybrid propulsion (like many of their other yachts).
  • Sunreef announced the signature of a build contract for its first Sunreef 43M Eco catamaran, which according to the shipyard, is ‘the world’s biggest electric leisure catamaran’.
  • Rossinavi’s 42.75 metre Sea Cat – this hybrid catamaran is currently under construction and is the first multihull project from the yard. The yacht will feature four different energy models that can be utilised depending on the cruising demands.
  • Italian shipyard Amer revealed their new explorer model Amer 41 steel during the show, which will be fitted with advanced new propulsion systems that will ‘significantly reduce consumption and emissions’.

Monaco Yacht Show 2022 highlights

Starlink, OneWeb and the evolving world of Satcoms

From an IT and technology perspective, few developments can surpass the excitement and current buzz around new LEO satellite constellations. Starlink was the word on everyone’s lips, with the new ‘maritime’ antenna, the flat high-performance model , on display, which is ready for shipment later this year. Starlink CEO Elon Musk stated that this new antenna is rated for 280+kph (174+mph) and has an operating temperature ranging from -30C to 50C. Unlike previous models, the high-performance antenna doesn’t have tripod legs; instead, it has a flat base that enables easy installation.

Starlinks solutions are already being adopted by the maritime sector, with high speeds, low latency and low pricing being its biggest draws. The service is currently available in Europe and coastal areas of the US, the Caribbean, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for further expansion in Q4 (2022) and Q1 (2023). Starlink is showing no signs of slowing down, with SpaceX launching a Falcon 9 rocket every 6.4 days.

Also in the low earth orbit market are OneWeb , who introduced their new superyacht offering at the show in partnership with Kymeta. This joint offering, created specifically for superyachts, hopes to rival competitor Starlink Maritime. Recent tests of the service demonstrated download speeds of up to 200Mbps, facilitating streaming and gaming with continuous, seamless coverage. A benefit of this service is it removes the need to choose regional plans or change services (due to OneWeb’s global and mid-ocean connectivity). Deliveries of the antenna are projected to begin in early 2023, with the service available through OneWeb-certified yachting partners, such as airtime provider Speedcast.

Superyacht Stories Reports on the Monaco Yacht Show 2022

Written By: Sam Watson

From the Monaco Yacht Show 2022, the most important event in the yachting calendar, our reporters on the ground reveal the key insights set to define yachting in 2023 and beyond.

MYS 2022 2

As the sun begins to set on the summer, the world’s yachting elite set sail for the French Riviera for the most illustrious event of the year, the Monaco Yacht Show. Since its inception in 1991, the event has become an important platform for those in the industry to share their news and previews while indulging in the glitz and glamour of the yachting lifestyle at its finest.

After a week on the ground in the principality of Monaco, our reporters reveal their key insights from the show, from the innovative shipyards making strides in sustainability to the creative concepts making waves across the globe.

Going green – past and future

As the industry continues to become increasingly environmentally aware, sustainability returned as a leading theme with the addition of a Sustainability Hub showcasing a wide range of green innovations. At a seminar on the first morning Giedo Loeff, Head of R&D at Feadship, Anders Kurten, CEO of Baltic Yachts, designer and naval architect Philippe Briand and Robert van Tol of Water Revolution Foundation presented “tangible improvements” in hull design, energy and propulsion, and the use of more sustainable materials. Besides yachts of the future, a major point of discussion was the feasibility of ‘green refits’ for the huge number of yachts already in existence.

Also driving the green energy movement was German shipyard Lürssen which revealed the results of its new Innovation Lab, which has spent the past few months testing and developing methanol fuel cell technologies. It also announced a new partnership with technology group Freudenberg, a world leader in maritime fuel cells. CEO Peter Lürssen said: “We both have the aim to bring fuel cells on board ships in the near future and revolutionise the yacht’s energy and propulsion system. The Innovation Laboratory will definitely bring us a step closer to a CO2 emission free Lürssen yacht.”

Lurssen MYS

Over in Italy, Rossinavi shipyard revealed it has commenced construction of a 43m hybrid-electric catamaran. Scheduled for delivery in 2024, Sea Cat will store and convert solar energy into electricity and is capable of transatlantic trips – 80% of an Atlantic crossing would be powered by electric energy, supported by 20% diesel generator use, reducing CO2 emissions by 40 tonnes.

Meanwhile in Austria, Silent-Yachts revealed the expansion of its range of solar-powered catamarans with the 36.7m Silent 120, scheduled for delivery in 2024. “This is the age of the super catamaran,” said CEO Michael Köhler. “Three great trends have converged to make our boats enormously successful. The rebound in yacht sales since Covid is already well documented. But add to that the growth of environmental sensibilities and the recognition that two hulls provide a far more luxurious platform for life at sea, and you have a recipe for unprecedented demand.”

Blue sky thinking

Love them or hate them, concept yachts are a key part of the show’s news every year and 2022 was no different. Concepts unveiled focused primarily on leading themes such as indoor-outdoor living and exploration.

One of the most talked about was Slice, an 85m superyacht concept by Dutch shipyard Feadship that “turns the inside out and the outside in”. Slice reinvents the way that light can be brought into a yacht. While most vessels feature large glass windows, Slice features a long strip of glass running from the bow to the stern, which allows natural light to filter down to all levels from above. It was created by Studio de Voogt, who designed several stand-out features including a multi-level pool, a 70sqm atrium accessed by cascading staircases.

Another light-filled concept was Italian shipyard Tankoa’s 68m T680 Fenice concept yacht. Created in collaboration with Enrico Gobbi of Team for Design, it was named after the Fenice opera house in Venice, Gobbi’s home city, and is elegant, bold and dynamic, much like its namesake. “This new project is the result of our desire to be recognised for who we are: a boutique shipyard able to offer a range of unique yachts designed by the best designers,” said Eva Orsi, President of Tankoa. “Enrico Gobbi highlights the unmistakable style, quality, beauty and know-how that goes into making our customers' dreams come true.”

Tankoa MYS

Explorer yachts made a return this year, too. Perhaps most excitingly, Dutch shipyard Heesen launched a 67m explorer concept in collaboration with British studio Winch Design. The yacht, XV67, creates a “new DNA” for the shipyard and is designed in response to demand from a new generation of customers looking to experience expedition-style adventure travel while indulging in the luxury lifestyle. “The new XV67 remains true to our original design intent: to create an exceptionally capable and beautiful bluewater voyager that will inspire owners to venture into new terrain,” the yard said.

XV67 MYS

Cruise control

One of the worst-kept secrets of the show came not from a shipyard but from a hospitality group, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. The company chose the event to showcase the launch of Four Seasons Yachts , a luxury yachting service set to sail in late 2025. The first yacht in the series was designed by Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri and will be 207 metres long and feature 95 suites and several dining and leisure outlets as well as fitness and wellness spaces across 14 decks.

“Four Seasons Yachts represents the next chapter of our long history of industry leading innovation, and a milestone moment for our company as we continue to capitalize on new opportunities to extend the world of Four Seasons,” says Christian Clerc, President, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. “Together with our partners at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD, we are creating something extraordinary that combines their expertise with what Four Seasons does best – delivering unmatched quality and excellence, surrounded by beautiful acts of service and love for our guests.”

Four Seasons MYS

Deep-sea exploration

While there was much to talk about on the water, waves were also being made under the surface. Dutch submersible company U-Boat Worx showcased its new two-person NEMO submarine, and revealed Nautilus, a diesel electric submersible yacht concept with five guest rooms. The “underwater yacht”, should it come to fruition, will be able to dive to a depth of 200m and reach speeds of 4 knots underwater and 9 knots on the surface.

U BOAT MYS v2

Also new in the world of submersibles is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between three industry leaders, Triton Submarines, Espen Øino International and Dark Ocean Deepsea. The powerful trio came together on a joint submersible project set to “quite literally reimagine subsea craft to change the way our deep oceans are explored”.

Speaking of the new Triton 660/9 AVA EO Edition, Espen Øino said: “Designing products and experiences that enable human beings to engage more deeply with the ocean environment is a core mission, both personally and for the company. This opportunity for Espen Øino International to further expand its expertise, while also contributing to the dramatic evolution of submersibles, is one I am personally intrigued by and has truly stimulated the team.”

Eyes on the East

Much of the superyacht industry has its sights set to the East. Leading yacht charter and brokerage company Camper & Nicholsons revealed the opening of its tenth bureau, in Dubai, with a Singapore office on the horizon as the business continues to expand.  Meanwhile USA-based Denison Yachting is set to open a London office. “Usually, people expand from the UK to the USA, but we are doing it the other way round,” said CEO Bob Denison.

Celebrating its 40 th  anniversary this year, Gulf Craft, a global brand in the field of composite-built superyachts unveiled plans for their new Majesty 160 due for delivery in 2025. Gulf Craft’s Chairman Mohammed Hussein AlShaali said: “The Majesty 160 will be our second largest vessel and will be a class-apart in its segment, catering to the needs and requirements of customers through its exceptional design, architecture and state-of-the-art engineering and technological features.”

Majesty Yachts MYS

Further developments in the Middle East were unveiled at a Superyachts in the Gulf seminar at Yacht Club de Monaco. Al Seer Marine, MB92 Group and P&O Marinas have signed a memorandum of understanding for a joint venture to develop the first superyacht refit and repair facility in the UAE (Dubai). Construction of the shipyard is scheduled for completion in 2026, with the joint venture offering its superyacht repair and refit services from 2023.

Supported by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, this is a strategic move in support of wider plans to position the UAE as a superyacht hub and become the winter yachting destination of the future.

Overall, the mood was positive among all exhibitors, with strong sales figures revealed for the last year and much optimism for the coming 12 months, despite ongoing political and financial issues in Europe. Time will tell how these impact predictions, although for now at least, it seems the future is smooth sailing.

Monaco Yacht Show opens in Monte-Carlo

Wednesday, September 28th, 2022

Written by: Marine Industry News

Monaco Yacht Show

The world’s most important big-yacht show opens its doors today at the Port Hercules, as the annual Monaco Yacht Show returns for 2022.

The lavish 115-metre Lürssen superyacht Ahpo headlines the four-day show, marking the largest yacht in attendance in the show’s history.

There are a total of 117 superyachts over 24m on display this year , attracting an estimated 19,000 international visitors and 440 exhibitors from 28 September-1 October.

This year, the show has expanded with three new exhibition areas focusing on sustainability, adventure, and innovation.

Presented in partnership with the non-profit Water Revolution Foundation , the new Sustainability Hub is an incubator for companies that provide innovative or tried-and-true eco-friendly solutions, as well as for budding start-ups working on sustainable alternatives that fit in seamlessly with the yachting world.

The 200sqm exhibition is located at Darse Sud, the tent dedicated to nautical equipment and technology.

The new Adventure Area showcases a range of day-trip and sports tenders, luxury and off-road vehicles, water toys, high-tech gadgets, helicopters and tailor-made programmes to explore the planet’s most remote destinations. The exhibition spans two sites at Monaco’s Port Hercule: Quai Antoine 1er, and Quai Jarlan.

Also new for this year, show organisers have extended the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub to integrate the exhibitors of the Designer Gallery under one single exhibition, located at Virage Louis Chiron.

Monaco-yacht-show

Following the success of previous years, Superyacht UK (SYUK) has returned to the show with a stand at Darse Sud, representing the UK industry via 11 companies showcasing their capabilities.

“Our members are at the forefront of superyacht development,” says association chair, Stephen Hills. “We offer global leadership in everything from naval architecture, design and engineering, new construction and refit, as well as the many skills and services necessary to ensure that superyachts are brilliantly managed and supported throughout their life.

“The Superyacht UK Pavilion has played a very important role for nearly two decades, providing a networking base for the many Superyacht UK attendees as well as supporting the global endeavours of individual British Marine members and driving business.”
