Crew aboard Schooner Roseway

Ahoy me hearties! Get ready to roll up your sleeves and hoist the sails as you set sail from Gallows Bay harbor on St Croix.

Seasonal sunset sails depart Sunday through Friday at 4 pm.  Rates: Adults: $50 | Seniors (65 and above) and Children (12 and under) $40. Reservations required. Private Charters are also available. Boarding begins 15 minutes prior to departure. Roseway sails rain or shine (it’s an adventure) unless conditions are unsafe. In such cases, they will contact you prior to the sail for re-scheduling.

The World Ocean School is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing challenging educational programs aboard the Schooner Roseway . She spends her winters here on St Croix where they offer educational programs to local school children. She summers in Boston Harbor (docked on Rowe’s Wharf) and along the Eastern seaboard providing educational programs. Part of the way they raise funds is by offering day and sunset sails. This is a fantastic opportunity to help hoist the sails and see what it's like to sail aboard a tall ship! She’s here in our waters typically from late November through April or May. After a century of service, she is one of only three original Grand Banks schooners left floating today. She is a registered U.S. National Historic Landmark operating in Boston and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Feeling adventurous? Book a weekend trip in the Caribbean or as volunteer crew when she sails back and forth to St Croix each season.

Be sure to check their schedule on the St Croix Calendar for special events!

About s/v Schooner Roseway

In the fall of 1920 a Halifax, Nova Scotia, newspaper challenged the fisherman of Gloucester, Massachusetts, to a race between the Halifax fishing schooners and the Gloucester fleet. Therefore many schooners, such as  Roseway , built at this time were not strictly designed for fishing but in order to protect American honor in the annual races. Roseway , 137′ in sparred length, was designed as a fishing yacht by John James and built in 1925 in his family’s shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts. Father and son worked side by side on Roseway , carrying on a long New England history of wooden shipbuilding. She was commissioned by Harold Hathaway of Taunton, Massachusetts, and was named after an acquaintance of Hathaway’s “who always got her way.” Despite her limited fishing history,  Roseway set a record of 74 swordfish caught in one day in 1934.

During the 2022/23 season, Schooner Roseway is undergoing maintenance and not in the water. Instead her new sister ship, Denis Sullivan is taking over the St Croix excursions

About s/v Denis Sullivan

Along with Roseway, World Ocean School has added another exciting vessel to their fleet, the Denis Sullivan.  The Denis Sullivan is a three-masted, gaff-rigged schooner, a Great Lakes tall ship built by Milwaukee community volunteers 20 years ago. Captain Christa Miller-Shelley, planned and sailed the challenging sail from Milwaukee, Wisconsin on an inland transit down the Mississippi River through locks and other obstacles before heading out on the open sea in transit to St Croix. She arrived in December 2022 and has been gracing our waters with sunset sails and educational programs ever since.

Wartime designation: CGR-812

Type: Gaff-rigged schooner

Historical:

Roseway was designed as a fishing yacht by John James and built in 1925 in his family’s shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts. Father and son worked side by side on Roseway, carrying on a long New England history of wooden shipbuilding. She was commissioned by Harold Hathaway of Taunton, Massachusetts, and was named after an acquaintance of Hathaway’s “who always got her way.”

n 1941, Roseway was purchased by the Boston Pilot’s Association to serve as a pilot boat for Boston Harbor, as a replacement for the pilot-boat Northern Light, No. 3

WWII service

In the spring of 1942, Roseway was fitted with a .50-caliber machine gun and assigned to the First Naval District (New England). All lighted navigational aids along the coast were turned off during the war, and it was up to the Pilots and Roseway to guide ships through the minefields and anti-submarine netting protecting the harbor. At the end of the war, the Coast Guard presented a bronze plaque to the pilots in honor of Roseway‘s exemplary wartime service.

Post War Years: Roseway continued to serve as a pilot vessel until the early 1970s, at which point she and San Francisco’s Zodiac were the only pilot schooners still in service in the United States. She was then sold and converted into a passenger vessel for the tourist trade. Roseway changed hands several times in the ensuing decades, operating primarily out of Camden, Maine and the US Virgin Islands. In 1997, Roseway appeared in a 1977 television remake of Rudyard Kipling’s “Captains Courageous” featuring Karl Malden. And she is now believed to be one of only six Essex-built Grand Banks fishing schooners left in existence. Roseway was listed as a National Historic Landmark. Roseway, at that time, retained between eighty and ninety percent of her original hull fabric and was badly in need of repairs. She remained docked in Rockland, Maine until she was repossessed by the First National Bank of Damariscotta, which in 2002 donated the vessel to the newly founded World Ocean School. Following two years of restoration in Boothbay Harbor, Roseway again set sail in 2005. She currently serves as the platform for the World Ocean School, which offers various educational programs in St. Croix and the northeastern United States. Roseway appeared in a 1977 television remake of Rudyard Kipling’s “Captains Courageous” featuring Karl Malden. roseway sailboat boston

Mystic — The schooner Roseway was returned to the water Wednesday at Mystic Seaport Museum's Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard.

Roseway, operated by World Ocean School, is wrapping up several weeks of maintenance, including replacing a plank and recaulking seams in the hull, sanding and painting the hull, and crafting new mast hoops .

The schooner is returning to Boston, its homeport, after a winter of educational programming in the Caribbean with students from Proctor Academy as well as a new partnership with the Caribbean Center for Boys and Girls.

The 137-foot vessel was built in 1925 in Essex, Massachusetts.

Hoist the Sails on a Historic Ship

There are few sights as eye-catching as seeing the Roseway making her way across the turquoise waters of the Caribbean into the harbor. The Roseway is a beautifully restored 137′ schooner with massive russet colored sails that is registered as a U.S. National Historic Landmark in both Boston and St. Croix. This regal vessel is owned and operated by the World Ocean School, which operates in South Carolina, Georgia and the Caribbean from November to May, providing a platform for curriculum integrated educational programs for students of all ages.

Roseway was originally designed as a fishing yacht by John James and built in 1925 in his family’s shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts.  The Roseway is one of only six surviving Grand Banks schooners, and the only schooner specifically designed to beat the Nova Scotians in the international fishing vessel races of the 1920s and 1930s. Following her use for racing and fishing, during World War I in 1942, Roseway was fitted with a .50-caliber machine gun and used by the Boston Pilots Association to guide ships through the minefields and anti-submarine netting protecting the harbor.  After her retirement from naval use in 1973, Roseway was transformed into a Windjammer and started cruising in 1975.  Roseway then starred in the television remake of Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Captains Courageous’ in 1977.  Finally, in September 2002, the bank that owned the Roseway honored a request by the World Ocean School and donated Roseway to be used for the school.  Since then, St. Croix has become the winter home port for Roseway and she summers in the Northeast, primarily in Boston, providing educational programs and day sails for the public.

I highly recommend that you book a day sail on the Roseway while here on St. Croix and allow yourself the amazing experience of hoisting the sails on this historic tall-ship!  Stepping onto the ship is like stepping back in time.  As you stand on the wooden deck make sure to look up and marvel at the enormity of the two masts.  Also, make sure to tour the entire deck and take in the details of this impressive schooner such as the intricate rigging, the wooden helm, the huge anchor stowed on the port side of the bow, the beautiful brass ships bell, and the array of knots used for both utility and stowage of the lines.

Once underway, you will be given the opportunity to be part of the action as the crew recruits passengers to grab a line and help to hoist the 5,600 square feet of sails.  After lining up along the side of the ship, you firmly plant your feet and grasp the huge line in your hand, then the staff crew leads as you rhythmically hoist the sail by pulling the line hand-over-hand in unison (or heave, ho as the sailors say).  The weight of the sails is unbelievable, and it feels very rewarding to look up at the billowing sails and know that you were part of the ‘crew’ that raised them up those massive masts.

Roseway Sunset Sails

Once the sails are up, enjoy the smooth sailing Roseway offers here around St. Croix as you relax on deck and enjoy the view, or explore the vessel and take in the splendor of this sailing landmark.  The Roseway is docked on St. Croix from November through April, and offers sunset sails to the public Sunday – Friday, as well as public day sails and private charters. To book your sail, or to confirm the current schedule and cost, please call (340) 626-7877 or visit www.roseway.com . Come and be part of history today by hoisting the sails and experiencing the National Historic Landmark that is the Roseway.

Editor’s Note: The schooner Roseway is currently undergoing a major refit. The Denis Sullivan, a replica Great Lakes sailing schooner, is coming in her place until she is in shipshape and returns back to making her seasonal voyages to St. Croix.
