INEOS Britannia Team Profile: Royal Yacht Squadron

All sailors

The 37th America’s Cup racing is underway, and here’s a full team profile on INEOS Britannia, the crew and their yacht club, the Royal Yacht Squadron…

Team profile.

Nationality: Great Britain

Representing: Royal Yacht Squadron

Key people: Ben Ainslie, CEO; James Allison, CTO; Martin Fischer, Chief Designer.

Key sailors: Ben Ainslie (skipper) , Giles Scott (helmsman) ; Freddie Carr; Dylan Fletcher; Leigh McMillan; Neil Hunter.

Ben Ainslie - skipper - crew

About INEOS Britannia

This is Ainslie’ third attempt to win the Cup for Great Britain, and it’s a team that is all about the tech. Backing from Sir Jim Ratcliffe gives the team access as part of the INEOS Sport Group to Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team , with live data link-ups to the Mercedes Applied Science team in Brackley, as well as working with the INEOS Grenadiers cycling team .

INEOS Britannia

The Formation of INEOS Britannia

The British team was formed in 2014, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron, with Ben Ainslie leading the charge.

After winning the America’s Cup with Oracle Team USA in San Francisco (2013), Ben Ainslie set out to win another, but this time with a British Team. The British Team made it to the semi-final in Bermuda (2017), but were knocked out by Emirates Team New Zealand .

In 2018, the British Team joined forces with British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and became INEOS Britannia.

British team

The 2024 37th edition of the America’s Cup in Barcelona marks the first time a British team has competed in 3 consecutive America’s Cups since Sir Thomas Lipton and the Royal Ulster YC bids between 1899 to 1930.

The America’s Cup began in 1851 in Cowes, Isle of Wight, organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron, and predating the modern Olympic Games by 45 years. Since losing the first competition 173 years ago against the Americans (New York Yacht Club), the British (Royal Yacht Squadron) are still yet to win…

The Royal Yacht Squadron

The Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Isle of Wight, is a highly prestigious and exclusive yacht club with over 200 years of rich history . They host a wide range of events and races throughout the year, including Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race , as well as marking the finish line for elite offshore competitions like the Ocean Globe Race .

Founded in 1815, the Royal Yacht Squadron, or “The Yacht Club” as it was then known, was situated at Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London.

The Prince Regent was welcomed as a member in 1817, and in his later ascension to the throne as George IV, Royal was added to the club’s name. The club kept a close association with the Royal Navy, with early honorary members including Nelson’s Captain at Trafalgar, Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy.

The RYS Clubhouse: Cowes Castle

Built in 1539 as part of Henry VIII’s chain of coastal defences, Cowes Castle has a long royal naval history . After being decommissioned in 1855, the Castle was taken over by the Royal Yacht Squadron and became their clubhouse.

Every Wednesday of every year (weather permitting), enthusiastic yachties take the afternoon off work and venture to RQYS for a fun and friendly race around the local islands of Moreton Bay.

Skippers can register their boat and their crew through the appropriate links below. Please ensure crew are registered by the skippers prior to the commencement of WAGS each week.

01/09/2024 – WAGS Sailing Instructions for 2024/25: Here

WAGS is a introduction to racing for many sailors, we have created a Q&A form to enable sailors to submit anonymous questions which can then be answered and displayed to the whole fleet. The Intention is to promote a judgement free, friendly, learning environment for all sailors.

Submit a Question: HERE

To see Questions & Answers already submitted please see the Answers Tab.

WAGS WhatsApp group (Asked August 22, 2024 at 6:47 pm):

I understand that there is a WAGS WhatsApp group. How does one actually join this group?

Great Question. The WAGS WhatsAPP Group is what we use to send out timely notices and the ROs daily briefing. To join download WhatAPP on your phone and then click the red “WhatsApp Notification Group” Button found on the WAGS Regatta page https://www.rqys.com.au/wags/

As Always if you need further assistance don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Sailing Office.

Are Furling headsail allowed? (Asked August 22, 2024 at 1:51 pm):

Another Skipper had also asked me if furling headsails are allowed?

It Depends. I Draw attention to Sailing Instruction 3.2 “The headsail must be fully hanked, or attached by means of a luff groove device , to the forestay…”. This means if your headsail is the type to fit into a track on the furler it meets the “luff groove device” rule. However if the sail is only attached at the Head and Tack it is not permitted (Per Sailing Instruction 3.1).

Can you use multiple Head Sails in WAGS? (Asked August 22, 2024 at 1:45 pm):

Can more than one head sail be use during the race?

Yes! You can use more than one headsail over the course of the race. HOWEVER, only one may be hoisted at any time. This means the original sail must be dropped and then the new sail may be hoisted.

WAGS Help Documents

View HERE (or HERE for mobile) for help registering for WAGS. The Skipper is responsible for entering their crew on entry.

More information on Sail Pass can be found Here .

The  first thing to do when arriving at the club is to sign-in at Clubhouse Reception .

  • We would recommend that you  arrive between 10:30 and 11 am to complete this process, as the subsequent crew registration is between 11 and 11:30 am.
  • If you are not already covered by Australian Sailing’s on-water insurance and liability, you will need to register for a  SailPass Online HERE , which will provide you with insurance cover for the day.

There are three (3) options available to assist you in participating in a WAGS event; those being:

  • Join as a Crew member of RQYS (pricing is available at Reception)
  • Provide evidence of membership of an Australian Sailing affiliated yacht club
  • Register for a Sail Pass

Secondly, you will then need to register with the WAGS coordinators in the RQ Bar . They will assign you to a vessel, if one is available.

  • Placement on a vessel for WAGS will be prioritised in order of the three (3) options above; and as such we cannot guarantee that you will make it onto a vessel to go sailing.
  • The number of spaces available is completely dependent on the number of boats entered in WAGS and if the skippers of those boats have any available spots for extra crew.
  • Depending on weather and the vessel you are assigned, the sailing event / competition can take anywhere  between 2 to 4 hours .

In terms of  what to bring , we recommend a bottle of water, clothes that can get wet and shoes with non-marking soles (so as to not mark the deck of the boat).

How to Enter WAGS:

Create Days Crew List:

https://www.rqys.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Create-WAGS-Crew-List.mp4

Don’t like having to go online every week to enter? Are you a RQYS Member with Direct Deposit set up? We have a solution!

WAGS “One Touch Entry” is a opt in program for members to use there member card at the WAGS registration table to Enter, Nominate Crew & Pay on your member account.

To opt in please complete the form below, or see the Sailing Administrator ([email protected] | At WAGS Registration Desk)
