Inside the Beast – the story of sailing superyacht Ngoni by Royal Huisman

"Build me a Beast! Don't build me a sheep in wolf's clothing. This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon; fast and furious."

That was the essence of the brief from the owner.

Designed by Dubois Naval Architects and featuring an innovative interior by Rick Baker Ltd, S/Y Ngoni is fast and luxurious – the product of bold and minimalist design and built by Dutch yard Royal Huisman.

Ngoni’s sleek and beautifully executed exterior conceals a host of innovative engineering to meet the challenges of marrying a huge, powerful and advanced rig with a slender and easily-driven hull.

Initially, Dubois drew a long and slender sloop with a plumb bow, sculpted aerodynamic superstructure and elegant beach deck, dominated by a towering sloop rig.

It was a dramatic concept but the owner challenged Dubois to push it still further. Dubois’ response was the reverse sheer that now defines Ngoni. It began as an exercise in creative expression but it soon became apparent that it also held the key to structural stiffness. Dubois further finessed the hull profile so that the reverse sheer transformed to concave sheer aft of the superstructure – an attractive styling touch that also enhances cockpit visibility. The owner had what he wanted.

Ngoni is one of the largest sailing yachts in the world.

Its minimalistic, clutter-free design was one of the requirements from the owner. Also, as an experienced owner who likes to helm, he insisted on steering that was light, yet firm and responsive. The wheel had to give him the true feel of the boat under sail.

Finally, the yacht, however edgy in presentation, must still accommodate the owner, his family and guests in style and comfort. And it should facilitate the safe and efficient operation of the yacht by the crew.

The yacht has a total sail area of 1,950 sqm (upwind) and 3,093 sqm (downwind).

The 853sqm square-top mainsail is notable not just for its load-reducing halyard lock but for the innovation allowing the square-top and its supporting diagonal batten to detach automatically and furl neatly into the styled performance boom with minimal intervention from the crew. While hoisting, the diagonal batten attaches automatically too.

The rig was the result of the collaboration between spar builder Rondal (Royal Huisman’s sister company), sailmaker North Sails and Carbo-Link, together with Dubois Naval Architects and the shipyard team.

Rondal built the impressive 71m one-piece carbon mast with a 24m performance furling boom. The Dubois office, together with the owners’ team, created one of the most extreme style-to-order boom ever seen. The almost 4m long aft extension of the boom, designed and crafted to follow the profile of the yacht’s stern, created visual harmony between the two. Ngoni’s full air-draft is 75m.

The owner’s insistence on steering that was light, yet firm, responsive and adjustable could only be met by a high aspect-ratio rudder and a manual system without power assistance – a major challenge considering the huge sail area.

The final system with a single, balanced 6.92sqm spade rudder – one of the largest carbon rudders ever produced – has delivered on its objectives.

Ngoni’s hull is punctuated by large rectangular portholes, a sea-level gym door, fold-out side boarding platform, two submarine anchors and retractable thrusters. The deck has giant cut-outs for flush sail lockers, a large tender gage, crane, spa pool and cooled waste locker.

The lifting keel weighs near 100 tonnes and allows a reduced draft of 5.3m from the usual 8.1m.

The topsides are finished in a bespoke metallic topcoat named “Claire de Lune” (Moonlight). The paint has been applied with an electrostatic coating technique that uses charged particles to bond the paint to the surface.

"Don't design a traditional yacht interior"

The interior design is the work of Rick Baker and Paul Morgan. The signature furniture pieces are signed by Francis Sultana.

A few steps descend from deck level to the informal yet luxuriously appointed guest cockpit, an intimate and sheltered outdoor space for reading and relaxation, playing games or simply watching the marine world around you. The deck house overhang, together with electrically-powered retractable windbreakers, ensures a comfortable environment in all conditions.

Seamless sliding doors by Rondal give access to the deck house interior, presenting the first indication of the exciting materials, colours and finishes to be found throughout the interior.

To starboard there is a bar and dining area while, to port, there is informal seating with coffee tables and, when required, a pop-up television.

Owners’ and guest accommodation is accessed via a curving staircase from the deck house to the guest lobby area. There is a twin guest cabin with spacious bathroom to port and a double guest cabin featuring a Japanese bath to starboard. Both feature high quality exotic veneers, marbles and resin finishes. Large, rectangular ports offer superb natural lighting by day.

The owners’ suite, aft, comprises a full-beam stateroom with bespoke built-in furniture, twin doors to an enormous bathroom, a spacious study with its own bathroom and a large gym with an opening hull port in the topsides. This area, too, is flooded by natural light.

The audio-visual system was thoroughly tested a full year prior to delivery. The owner was very specific about the configuration, asking iPad users to interface with the custom setup supplied by Tijssen Elektro based on Royal Huisman engineering. With 48 terabyte storage by Kaleidescape and a vault for 320 disks, there is access to a wealth of music and movies. The owner also wished to view his favourite TV channels without relying on VSAT, so a special configuration bundles 3G and 4G broadband while close to land, via a booster mounted on the masthead.

There is accommodation for up to nine crew in six crew cabins. All enjoy high quality cabin fit-outs with full ensuite bathroom and shower facilities. Aft of the accommodation there is a bright, spacious and professionally equipped galley to starboard, open to the crew mess on portside. Just aft of the crew mess is a large laundry. Stairs from the adjacent deckhouse pantry give direct access to the service areas.

Besides the sails additional power is provided by a single MTU 8V 2000 M72 diesel engine delivering 966 hp. Cruising at 12 knots, she can reach a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles.

S/Y Ngoni was launched in April 2017.

Delivered last summer and immediately put to good use in the Mediterranean, the 190-foot high-performance sloop Ngoni (originally known by its project name: The Beast) from Royal Huisman is a sailing sight to behold. Tasked by the owner to create a contemporary yacht with incredible performance, handling, and seakeeping paired with luxury amenities, Dubois Naval Architects settled on a minimalistic approach, creating a clean, clutter-free deck and low-profile superstructure, both of which made for an elegant and efficient yacht. Ngoni is also one of the largest sailing yachts in the world.

Dubois designed a slender aluminum hull with plumb bow and reverse sheer, which gave the hull structural stiffness. This is important, considering the large portholes, a fold-out side-boarding platform, water-level gym door, a couple of submarine anchors, and retractable thrusters, as well as a 100-ton lifting keel that adjusts from 26 to 17 feet. Maximum hull speed is 17 knots.

The yacht features a carbon mast and a 9,182 square-foot square-top mainsail with supporting diagonal batten that detaches automatically and furls into the styled boom. The diagonal batten attaches automatically when hoisting as well.

A Williams 565 Tender Diesel Jet boat is stored in a cut-out tender garage on the flush foredeck, and an inflatable Bombard commando C3 sport boat is stowed deflated in a storage locker for crew use. They are extracted from the yacht and placed into the water via a Nautical Structures crane.

The cockpit helm station features a sculptural carbon helm with a stainless-steel top. Besides a cozy and protected seating area, the cockpit also includes a popup TV for alfresco movies. Glass doors between the cockpit and the deckhouse expand the inside out and the outside in.

Rick Baker and his team created Ngoni’s sophisticated interior, which was meant to be anything but traditional. Instead, it is a curvy, masculine, and colorful scheme, and includes sculpted-metal surfaces, marble and onyx from Italy, and bespoke veneers.

The glass deckhouse includes a seating area, bar, and dining area. Belowdecks are the owner’s apartment and two en-suite guest staterooms, one a twin and the other a double. Both cabins feature large windows to pull in the sunshine, highlighting the interesting veneers, marbles, and resin finishes.

The aft full-beam owner’s suite comprises an en-suite bedroom, as well as an en-suite study and gym, plus an opening hull port for fresh air and natural light. The owner’s stateroom offers up direct access to an aft sunbathing and lounging area with carbon-fiber spa tub and­­ steps down to the sea-level beach deck, which features an Olympic-size diving board.

Ngoni houses accommodations for crew, too, including a captain’s cabin, two single, and three twin crew cabins.

When not under sail, Ngoni has a range of 4,000 nautical miles at its MTU 8V 2000 M72 engine’s cruise speed of 12 knots.

Royal huisman  presents the 58m high-performance sloop ngoni that wears correctly the byname "the beast" - penned by the late ed dubois..

Ngoni is one of the most innovative designs that come to real life. I like those owners who bring courage into the superyacht industry to realize those progressive projects. The owner is a highly experienced yachtsman and offshore racing sailor. The design brief said that the owner wanted a luxurious cruising go-anywhere yacht with high-performance DNA. I haven’t been on board, but I think the project stakeholders delivered precisely that. The statement of requirements in a nutshell:

“Build me a beast. Don’t build me a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon; fast and furious.”

Royal Huisman’s subsidiary company RONDAL built the impressive 71m carbon-fiber mast with components by Carbo-Link . Even the style-to-order performance furling boom with a length of 24m could be a big boat by itself and reflects Ngoni ‘s profile design.

Ed Dubois (1952 – 2016) said:

“The bigger the model, the more accurate the results, because you can scale everything except the viscosity of water. Our aim is to reduce the wetted surface to minimize drag, while still retaining good stability. The hull lines will be finalized by November following the results of the tank tests.”

A Williams 565 jet tender is stored forward under the flush deck. A hidden crane moves the dinghy in or out of the water. The foredeck also contains a pool and enough space set up a sunbathing area with sunshade. Guests can enter the tender via the beach deck with the fold-out swimming platform and an inviting staircase to the cockpit.

NGONI ‘s Interior design is a creation by Rick Baker and Paul Morgan with signature furniture pieces by Francis Sultana . The full-beam owners’ suite at the aft features direct access to the beach deck, a gym, and a study that transforms into further guest areas alongside the two permanent cabins.

“Accent pieces and exotic finishes will be created in the workshop of London-based Rick Baker Ltd. Having been involved in some of the most high-profile projects on the planet, The Light Corporation has been asked to artfully shed light on the project.”

The deckhouse has two distinct areas. The front part is dedicated to the crew with navigation desk and direct access down to the crew area with the mess, galley, and six double crew cabins. The rear part is a socializing area with coffee table seating, dining, and a bar.

Last but not least: Interviews with the naval architect and interior designer of Ngoni

Naval architect ed dubois.

ED: The owner wanted me to take a fresh look at large yacht design. He wanted me to go back to my roots in the late 1970s and ‘80s when we were designing race boats, but he also knew we had designed a number of high-performance yachts that were nevertheless seaworthy and comfortable cruisers. So I had to reset my internal computer, if you like, and look hard at how we could save weight and add strength. That’s how the reverse sheer came about.      

Can you explain the concept behind the reverse sheer?

ED: Think of a sloop as a bow and arrow: the bow is the hull, the arrow is the mast and the string is the forestay and backstay. You can imagine that tension creates an awful lot of bending moment, which is fine if you can compensate with a strong, deep beam in the structural sense, but the Beast has a relatively low freeboard and shallow beam with no structural superstructure. Then you make the situation worse by making holes in the deck for tender bays, sail lockers, and hatches – metal that would usually resist the compression in the deck. You can overcome that by adding a substantial sheer strake and Ngoni has a top plate of solid 35mm aluminum that acts like a ring beam around the hull, but it’s still a struggle to come up with the required stiffness. So then I started thinking about a reverse sheer, which is much like the structure of a bridge where the road is convex to resist the compression created by the weight of the traffic. We ran it through our structural analysis program and suddenly we had a 12 percent increase in stiffness for the same weight. It’s something you sometimes see on high-performance boats like Samurai, but this is the first time I’ve designed a sailing yacht with a reverse sheer.

It also affects the exterior profile, of course. Was the owner happy with the look of the boat?

ED: He wanted a yacht that was fast and punchy without losing the concept of a world cruising boat, which allowed me to think outside the box and defy convention. I remember when he initially came to the office I sketched out a design and he said, “It’s OK, but a bit ordinary. What are you going to do now?” I went away and came up with the reverse sheer, but was worried he might not like it. The next time we met in London I showed him the design and he loved it – in fact, he gave me a big bear hug! Actually, Ngoni has a convex sheer at the maximum bending moment amidships that transforms into a concave sheer aft, which looks more attractive and provides better visibility from the cockpit.

To what extent were you involved in the interior layout and design?

ED: With all our designs – except Twizzle, because we joined the project later – we’ve developed the initial space planning. As naval architects, we know where the primary elements such as the mast, the keel box, and the engine room should be. The associated structures around these have a profound effect on the interior layout, especially on a sailing boat. I also very much enjoy dealing with the architecture – as opposed to the naval architecture – of a boat: the flow from one space to another and the lifestyle the owner enjoys (or endures!) on board. So we created the general arrangement and introduced some of the curved shapes into the interior, which provided the template for the interior designers Rick Baker and Paul Morgan.

There is a fine distinction between speed and comfort; does that mean compromises had to be made?

ED: I prefer the word “balance” to “compromise”. To produce a balanced design you have to understand the true purpose of the boat from the owner’s perspective. That means you have to get to know him or her well enough to understand what they really want, which is not always easy as some owners have very clear ideas and others are not too sure. The owner of Ngoni is an experienced sailor who has raced in the Fastnet and Sydney-Hobart, and he knew I understood both the racing and cruising side. Like Frers and Briand, I started my career designing race boats and then transferred into large cruising yachts, so my job as a designer today is to get the right balance of speed, seaworthiness and long-range cruising ability based on the owner’s brief. I don’t think you can do that successfully unless you’ve sat for hours on the weather rail of a boat you’ve designed yourself and got cold and wet and possibly frightened or felt the excitement when you win and disappointment when you lose. You learn how a sailing boat behaves in all conditions on the race course – it is that experience that has given me the confidence to design a large sailing yacht and be pretty certain it’s going to work.

Given the need for speed, was a carbon fiber hull ever considered?

ED: It was, briefly, at the very beginning. The owner wanted to know about all the options and we presented him with comparisons in terms of weight, cost and build times. But there were other considerations at stake: sure, we could make a lighter and faster boat out of carbon, but would it be as comfortable and suitable for world cruising? Carbon hulls have a more aggressive motion at sea, which beyond the issue of seasickness is not very comfortable for long-range cruising. They also tend to be noisy, so some of the weight you’ve saved goes back on the boat as acoustic insulation. Again, it all came down to balance: understanding the true purpose of the yacht and coming up with the right formula, which is the delicious thing about being a designer. It’s like the satisfaction you get from solving a complicated mathematical equation. And people put their trust in you and pay you do it!

Please introduce yourselves

Rick Baker Limited is a bespoke cabinetmaking company which is very firmly art based. Both myself (Rick Baker) and co-director, Paul Morgan, have been through the art college system – I studied illustration and fine art, and Paul originally started off studying architecture before transferring to furniture design and manufacture.

In my twenties, I moved into furniture design and it did not take too long before we became involved with clients that were looking for originality of design and exemplary workmanship. As the company has grown, so has our reputation for producing quirky one-offs.

We employ twelve cabinetmakers and are fortunate to have never needed to advertise for work.

What brief were you given?

We have worked on many projects for these clients, and they asked if we could come up with a scheme for the interiors for the yacht. We were obviously delighted to be involved and had a series of meetings to determine the brief and direction for the yacht styling.

What was your initial reaction?

The design of the yacht is so unique, and it is obviously very exciting to be part of the team working on such a ‘one-off’. The curved shape of a yacht calls for a different approach – we have made a lot of curved furniture, but it was always to fit into square rooms!

Did the brief present any opportunities?

Yes, it was fantastic to meet the team involved in the building of the yacht. It has given us great insight at the highest level. It has also been very interesting to see how the boatyard approaches manufacture generally.

This project also presents us with an incredible opportunity to bring some new ideas to the more traditional styling of many current yachts.

Are there challenges to overcome?

The main challenge comes from the fact that, although we have designed and made freestanding pieces for motor yachts in the past, we have never been asked to design the complete interior of a sailing yacht.

But this also means we can challenge the status quo. We design with only half an eye on what supposedly can or can’t be done on a yacht, then, with the advice of Royal Huisman, we resolved most problems together.

What are the steps between brief and delivery?

We have a relatively simple design process which starts with a client meeting where we throw lots of ideas into the air – we land some of those ideas and we write copious notes. We then work on visuals and scale drawings to present to the clients and then rework those drawings with the design development that has come out of that meeting. We have been fortunate to work closely on several projects for these clients and have developed an understanding of their ideas, likes and dislikes.

How do you collaborate with the project team?

We had initial design concept meetings with Ed Dubois and Royal Huisman to agree to a strategy. And, as I have already mentioned, we work with Royal Huisman to make sure our concepts are fit for purpose as part of a superyacht interior. Also, the experience and advice from Goddy (Project Manager) and Iain Cook (Build Captain) have been invaluable.

Is there an overall ‘theme’?

The yacht is a total one-off, with a unique design by Ed Dubois, and the interiors had to reflect the same state of the art design. So we have consciously avoided giving the yacht a theme but rather chose to make the different areas very individual. It was important to us to not let the craft feel like a hotel and to avoid repetition in the cabins etc.

Are you using any unusual materials?

Innovative design still has to be practical and visually comfortable. The ‘standard’ response would be to mix high-sheen lacquer and hardwoods. Instead, we have selected some specialist finishes which would not normally be associated with a contemporary yacht. These include artisan resin panels and metalized spray and lacquered textured effects.

Have you learned anything?

Having been involved in such a wonderful project has given us a different way of seeing and designing, although of course not all of that can be applied to domestic interiors. It has encouraged us to consider new rhythms of furniture design.

How do you think people will react?

I believe that other people will enjoy slowly observing the yacht and interiors when they first board – in the same way, that people attune themselves to understand abstract art. They will inspect carefully and hopefully understand and warm to their surroundings.

Can you sum up the project in a few words?

It has certainly been, quite literally, a learning curve. Our voyage on land with the team has been educational and we hope the journey continues and that the yacht proves itself to be something really special – ‘The Beast’ of speed and fun.

Video: 58m Royal Huisman yacht Ngoni on sea trials

Royal Huisman  has released on-board footage from the sea trials of its forthcoming 58 metre sailing superyacht  Ngoni . As the video below shows, she is capable of a sharp turn of speed under sail and eagle-eyed viewers will be able to catch a few glimpses of her interior.

Launched in March at the former  Holland Jachtbouw yard in Zaandam, Ngoni was designed by Dubois Naval Architects  — making her one of the last projects from the legendary British studio. Currently cruising in Palma after her recent delivery, she is one of  the world's largest sailing yachts .

The yard was given a clear brief from the client, which inspired the project name: “Build me a beast. Don’t build me a wolf in sheep’s clothing. This has to be an edgy and innovative weapon, fast and furious. I want to get off the wheel after a day of sailing feeling completely knackered from the excitement of hands-on fast sailing.”

The result is an ocean-going cruiser that balances innovative features with on-board luxury. Interior styling will be courtesy of Rick Baker and Paul Morgan , with accommodation split between two guest staterooms and a master apartment. This palatial suite comes with its own superyacht gym , study and steam room.

The exterior is comprised of an aluminium hull, dramatically inflected sheerline, plumb bow and sculpted superstructure. Ngoni has been designed to achieve a maximum hull speed of 17.5 knots.

Other key features include a lifting keel that will allow her draught to be reduced from 8.1 metres to 5.3 metres. To ensure minimal wind disturbance to the leading edge of her headsail, the flush deck furlers in the bow have been wind tunnel tested. Ngoni  has also been fitted with a tender garage , davit crane and spa pool.

Speaking last year, Alice Huisman said: “With her distinctive modern looks and high performance, Ngoni sends a clear message that she is no ordinary custom yacht, built by no ordinary custom shipyard.”

Other sailing yachts currently under development at the Dutch yard include the 56 metre Project Aquarius and the 81 metre flagship Project 400 .

The last yacht penned by late naval architect Ed Dubois, 58m/190ft sailing yacht NGONI was built by Royal Huisman and launched in 2017. Her exteriors were also styled by Ed Dubois, while the bespoke interiors were completed by Rick Baker Ltd. Sailing yacht NGONI accommodates up to six guests over three comfortable cabins.

To create an uncluttered appearance, the teak foredeck cleverly conceals a tender and crane beneath a flush hatch. A spa pool is also hidden below using the same method, which allows the same space to be employed for sunbathing, exercise or observation as desired.  To the centre, the cockpit extends out from the salon to form a sheltered space for alfresco dining and electrically-powered retractable windbreakers ensure that space can be used both close to land and while out at sea.

Aft of the cockpit, are two helm stations, each with a large sofa for comfort while steering. To the stern, there is an aft-facing double-sized sunpad which enjoys uninterrupted views. An Olympic diving board can be fitted between the helm station and the sunpads for guests to use in deeper water. Broad steps head down the stern to the swim platform, where guests can use the area for lounging or for access to the tender. There is a carbon fibre passerelle with self-levelling steps and platform for guests to step on board from land or by tender, or alternatively, the hydraulic side platform and gangway can be used instead.

NGONI Specifications

Sliding doors separate the cockpit from the salon, which is decorated in a masculine style using deep red and charcoal tones in a variety of materials and textures, including resin and wood. On the port side, there is an inviting curved sofa placed in the unusual position to face outwards to take in the views. Armchairs, a coffee table and a concealed television add to this close and inviting space while on the opposite wall the formal dining area and bar offer comfort and elegance for an unforgettable night of entertainment.

On the lower deck, the accommodation consists of a full-beam Master suite with private library/study and gym, plus an en-suite bathroom finished in lavish Italian marble and onyx. The double cabin and twin cabin en-suite bathrooms receive the same treatment, with the former cabin offering its occupants a Japanese bath.

The accommodation provides for up to 6 guests over 3 cabins: 1 Master suite, 1 double cabin and 1 twin cabin. The crew of 9 are accommodated over 6 cabins.

Walpole woman, 70, dies after August boat crash in Hingham Bay. Who is now investigating

A 70-year-old East Walpole woman has died three weeks after a boat collision in Hingham Bay .

Patricia Cicalese was one of two people transported Aug. 16 to area hospitals in critical condition, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney's office, after a crash that involved a 38-foot Sea Ray motorboat and a 21-foot Pisces sailboat. Weymouth and Hingham police and fire marine units responded to the incident off Grape Island about 12:43 p.m.

Cicalese died Saturday, and the other person remains hospitalized with critical injuries.

Massachusetts Environmental Police conducted the initial investigation. Now the district attorney's office has taken the lead in investigating the fatal crash.

If you love ’70s and early ’80s tunes from artists like Toto, Christopher Cross, America, Ambrosia and Bread, you’ll want to buy a ticket to the Portland Yacht Rock Festival.

The show is on Friday at Aura.

Yacht Rock is the tongue-in-cheek name given to soft-rock music that is loosely associated with southern California and boating. Mostly, it’s comprised of hit songs that you won’t bang your head to but will certainly sing along with. Best of luck with the those high notes in the refrain of Toto’s “Africa.”

Aura general manager Mark Curdo is a gigantic Yacht Rock fan, and the first planning meeting about the show took place at Three Dollar Dewey’s in January.

Curdo, with the help of guitarist Max Cantlin (Gina and the Red Eye Flight Crew, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Micromasse), assembled an all-star cast of 14 local musicians to perform a slew of classic Yacht Rock songs on Friday night. Advertisement

“I’ve been a fan of light and easy listening rock my whole life,” Curdo said. “Whether people think Yacht Rock is cheesy or not, at the end of the day, this stuff is well done and the musicianship is ridiculous.”

The idea for the Yacht Rock show has been mapped out in Curdo’s head for a few years. “I wanted to have a few lead singers, I knew certain ones could hit certain notes, and I actually had the whole set list.”

It includes hits like “Reminiscing” by Little River Band, “Ventura Highway” by America, “Midnight at the Oasis” by Maria Muldaur, “Eye In The Sky” by The Alan Parsons Project and “On and On” by Stephen Bishop.

Lead vocal duties will be shared among Don Campbell, Gina Alibrio, Owen Conforte and Kris Rodgers. There will also be a couple of guest vocalists taking the stage.

The band is led by Cantlin and includes Tyler Quist on bass, Chris Sweet on drums, Emma Stanley on trumpet and flugelhorn and Kate Beever on percussion, among several others.

Boston-based singer-songwriter Bitch (Karen Mould) is performing a Saturday night show on Great Diamond Island, the home of their longtime friend Dini Lamot.

“I’m gonna bring my bass and my violin, sing songs and tell some stories, and it should be really intimate and sweet,” said Bitch (known as Karen only to their mother, according to  a 2022 interview.)

Face the Music: Tough subjects get upbeat treatment on ‘Bitchcraft’

The show will feature a number of songs from the 2022 album “Bitchcraft,” including “Easy Target,” which they wrote in the aftermath of the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, and the synth- and percussion-heavy breakup tune “Pages.”

The album was well-received, and Bitch enjoyed the boost after a several year hiatus from putting out music. “It gave me wind under my broomstick again. It has been a beautiful homecoming into being an artist again.”

They said they’ve also been writing new material. “I actually started laying a couple of songs down in the studio last month. There’s a new project on the horizon.”

Bitch has been performing a one-woman show since the release of “Bitchcraft” and was excited to share that it will have an off-Broadway run in New York City starting this winter.

Captain Glenn on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 return and the Bayesian 'freak accident'

Captain Glenn Shephard has been a familiar face throughout all four seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, where he has commanded Parsifal III.

From dealing with the yacht's unpredictable challenges and managing onboard love triangles, to enjoying oversized crackers in the galley, the Bravo star has made the 177-foot vessel his second home for more than 15 years.

Usually catering to demanding guests as they charter through Greece, Spain, and Italy, it seems fitting that the 63-year-old chatted with us from the comfort of his own boat, Avalon, in Croatia.

Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht has been one of the most anticipated in the show's history. Viewers have been eagerly awaiting its release after photos confirmed filming took place last summer.

Initially slated for a February debut, fans have speculated that the latest season’s release has been delayed following allegations of sexual misconduct against first mate Gary King, made by a production member just days after filming wrapped. King has vehemently denied the accusations.

Despite the controversy, the Montreal native reassured fans that the new season is on its way. However, he remains unsure of exactly when viewers will see him alongside engineer Colin Macrae and chief stew Daisy Kelliher back on their screens.

He told The Standard: “They announced it at BravoCon in November. But then it didn’t air in Spring or Summer. I think it’s coming soon, but I don’t know exactly when. The network decides that. I get endless questions on social media about it, but all I can say is, 'It’s coming soon'.

“We just have to be patient.”

Though the delay is frustrating, it appears both Shephard and fans will have to wait a bit longer for the next season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht. In the meantime, UK fans can catch him at the Southampton International Boat Show 2024 later this month. The event, the largest of its kind in the UK, returns for its 55th year at Mayflower Park from 13th to 22nd September 2024.

Speaking about his involvement, he said: "It's pretty cool. I'm really excited."

The seasoned captain will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, host a meet-and-greet, and take part in a Q&A session. And he assured us that he’s ready for all questions, even tough ones regarding the recent Bayesian tragedy, which claimed the lives of British entrepreneur Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah, and four others when their luxury yacht sank off Sicily.

Boat enthusiasts have been eager to hear Shephard’s perspective on the tragic sinking of Bayesian , especially given his experience with Parsifal III, a superyacht from the same manufacturer. Although that’s where the two vessels similarities end, with Parsifal boasting two masts, not one. It also doesn't have a lifting keel, meaning stability is always at its maximum onboard.

Speaking of the tragedy, Shephard added: “I know there's going to be questions, and I'm happy to address them, but I'm not going to speculate. All I can say is, my heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the people that perish. It's a horrible tragedy, and I'll also say it's definitely a freak accident. You know anyone thinking about going out on a boat and worried that's going to happen - that doesn't happen and I couldn't believe that it could happen.

“We're going to have to take steps to make sure it never happens again, obviously. But no one thought that that could happen. We're all blown away - people in the industry, naval architects - it was a freak incident. That's all I can say.”

Glenn stressed that the Marine Accident Investigation Branch will thoroughly examine the situation, avoiding “guesswork and conspiracy theories” amid the growing social media speculation. He also underlined the importance of safety onboard and reassured viewers that such freak accidents are uncommon.

“Safety is critical,” he said. “It's the most important thing at all times. And we're always keeping an eye on the weather, obviously, but that what happened was a very localised, I think was a very localised event.

“It probably came and gone in a matter of minutes. It's not a hurricane. It's not a storm that's lasting all night. It's something that blows through. I don't know I wasn't there, but that's what I think. And so you have to take all the precautions to be ready for anything, you know, and that's I think we will all learn from this.”

With his sailing knowledge sure to be challenged this weekend, Shephard can usually rely on the camaraderie of his fellow Below Deck captains to riff off of.

Since the debut of Below Deck Sailing Yacht in 2020, he has formed close bonds with Captain Sandy Yawn and Captain Lee Rosbach , whom he hopes will “take to the high seas again” after missing season 12 due to ill health.

However, Shephard's colleagues have had their share of drama. It all started when Yawn stepped in for Rosbach during Season 11 after he had taken ill. Their feud reached fever pitch when he publicly criticised her leadership and her decision to fire stew Camille Lamb without telling him. As a result, Yawn cemented their fallout by not inviting Rosbach to her wedding in May.

Despite the drama, Shephard has stayed neutral and hopes for reconciliation. He shared: “I always like to bring people together, but I don’t know the full story. There’s talk, and it seems they’ve confirmed they’re not the best of friends. But life’s too short for that.

“When we were all together on stage at BravoCon, they seemed fine. But personalities are tricky — especially in the yachting world, where square pegs don’t always fit into round holes. Strong personalities can mean conflict, and resolving that is a massive skill in any industry."

Looking ahead, the captain is contemplating his future with the show after five seasons. For now, fans can rest assured that Captain Glenn isn’t ready to retire from the captain’s chair just yet. He’s aiming to strike a balance between his work and personal enjoyment, signalling a move towards a more leisurely future.

“I’ll probably continue doing it as long as they keep asking me back. I love it. But because of my age, it’s time for me to stop and smell the roses a bit. My sailing days for work aren’t over, but I’m not going to do it full-time anymore. I’d love to do more seasons of the show.”

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.
