Regatta Series Delivers The Goods

  • By Dave Reed
  • September 10, 2024

Detroit’s Bayview YC

With the last drops of Mount Gay Rum poured on another gangbusters regatta in Annapolis, Maryland, in May, with more than 200 boats, the organizing squad of the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series packed their belongings and headed straight to Detroit’s Bayview YC for a long overdue re-addition to the regatta series.

Tartan 10 Erica

It had been a good 14 years since the series called on Detroit sailors, and for this edition, the sailors answered with the same high enthusiasm of 2010. With nearly 100 boats scattered across Lake St. Clair, there was no “Lake St. Stupid” this time around. The regatta opened with a spectacular day of sun and breeze and continued from there, delivering tight racing, especially among the regatta’s big three fleets: the J/120s, J/111s and J/35s.

Annapolis

The sailors of the regional J/35 class put on a great show with its growing fleet. Most of these now-decades-old 35-footers have been returned to racing form, and the top three were locked in boat-on-boat battles over three days. At the start of the final race, Mike Welch’s team on Falcon was sitting on a 1-point lead, but an OCS had them clawing their way back to win the race and the series by 2 points over their arch rivals on Bill Wildner’s Mr. Bill’s Wild Ride .

“That was quite a comeback, and there’s definitely luck involved,” Welch says. “When you’re over early, the wind literally goes out of your sails, but our crew kept it together and stayed positive.”

J/105 at Marblehead

Falcon ’s stellar perseverance earned them the regatta’s overall title and a berth at the Helly Hansen Sailing World Caribbean Championship in October, a battle of regatta champions in the British Virgin Islands on Sunsail-provided 41-footers.

The Regatta Series continued its Great Lakes tour with a stop in Chicago once again, where the Windy City made good on its reputation. With 150 boats across 16 classes, including several fleets of distance racers, competitors enjoyed three days of racing, and here it was Brian Kaczor’s team on the Tartan 10 Erica that was plenty ready for the big breeze of the final day. After six challenging races in total, Erica ’s winning margin was a single point, and it was this point that they had fought for in the final race. The class win also earned Kaczor’s team the regatta’s overall title and the BVI berth.

“We hung on to first place, barely,” Kaczor says. “We had a tough day with tactics and my driving, but we were able to make up a lot of it on the downwind stuff.”

Albacore class

Their downwind speed in top-end conditions, Kaczor says, was all down to the crew: Corey Fast, Christa Georgeson, Scott Melanson, Seth Morrell, Brian Nelson and Chuck O’Donnell. “They were the key in the last race. We had to catch one more boat, and there was no question that the chute had to go up to catch that one boat in front of us,” he says. “The crew was amazing, and was able to handle that and pull it off.”

Mirage sailing team

Marblehead has long served as the final regatta of the US series, and this year’s edition was hosted by the Eastern YC with support from Boston and Corinthian. In the days prior, the groms of Junior Race Week had been skunked with only one race scored, but the wind gods favored the adults with a challenging day of breeze on the opening day for the bulk of the fleets. With 161 boats spread across three race circles, three classes competed for their New England Championship titles: Sailors on Viper 640s, J/70s and Town Class, and Lightnings vied for their Atlantic Coast Championship.

J/111s racing in Detroit

The regional J/105 fleet has always been strong, and it was a relatively new team in Matthew Herbster’s No Quarter who played the spoiler and left with the ultimate spoils: the BVI Berth. As a group of friends who have been racing with or against one another in different classes, together they’ve been quick to get up to speed, winning the regatta in what is now their second season with the boat.

They battled with perennial champ Merlin throughout the regatta, and Herbster says that the win was bittersweet when racing was abandoned on the final day. “ Merlin beat us on the water, but one bad spinnaker set [on Saturday] set them in,” he says. “We wanted to go out and win today, but we were robbed of that [opportunity] because of the weather. But we are happy to go back out with them and settle the score.”

On No Quarter and headed to the BVI with Sunsail in October were Jonathan Dragonas, Julie Femino, Noah Flaherty, Ted Johnson and Chris Small. They’re confident that they’ll take their collective skills to the Caribbean and do just fine against the regatta series’ five other challengers and the defenders. According to the team, they’ll go down there and do what they do. They’ll figure out how to sail the boat, get it fast, and have fun.

2024 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series, Chicago

With No Quarter finalizing the BVI lineup, they’ll also be facing Steve and Catherine Boho’s Melges 24 team on The 300 (St. Petersburg winners), Cate Terhune’s team on the J/70 Casting Couch (Annapolis), and the defending champions of Cedric Lewis and Fredrik Salvesen’s Team Mirage .

Sunday and Monday Night Races

The Sunday and Monday Night Racing program embodies our “Seriously Fun” philosophy.  Starting in April and ending in October, we one design race our Rainbow fleet.  These less formal races are designed to build sailors’ skills – everybody gets tiller time and there is pre-race, post-race, and on-the-water coaching.  The coach makes up each boat’s crew so the better sailors learn by teaching and the sailors just out of 101 have an experienced racer on their boat.  The emphasis is on fun and learning, not on winning.  Basic Sailing graduates are highly encouraged to attend!

Our races range from multiple short laps around a windward leeward course to longer races out to the Naval Academy Bridge or the Bay Bridge.  We have real starts and finishes but fouls are loosely called from the coach’s boat – no protests. Every once in a while the coach will throw in a skills test like reefing or “doing circles”.

Post-race, we assemble in our clubhouse – the “Sail Shed” – to view the race videos and pictures.  After everyone has helped themselves to the cooler, the coach will give kudos and highlight general areas for the fleet to improve.  Then it’s time to just enjoy a beautiful sunset over Back Creek and the camaraderie of the KBC.

Check out the videos and gallery below:

Finally, a summary of our 2022 season by member John McConnell:

Fleet Racing in Annapolis

Have you ever strolled through Annapolis and seen the parade of boats with their spinnakers up racing up Spa Creek and thought, “that looks so beautiful and fun.  I wish I was out there!”  Now you can be.

The KeelBoat Club enters two Caraluna by Tartan 245’s in the Annapolis Yacht Club’s Wednesday Night Series.  We also enter the boats in weekend fleet races in the Annapolis area.  This gives our members access to racing in Annapolis’s competitive ORC fleet and experience with spinnakers.

The Caraluna by Tartan 245 was designed by Cai Svendsen and Tim Jackett as a modern sport boat teaching platform.  With an asymmetrical spinnaker and carbon fiber mast, the boat is powerful enough to surf at over 14 knots but sailors can remain sheltered in the cockpit rather than “hiking out.”

These boats are also available to rent by our members after a checkout sail.

Regional Sailboat Races in the USA

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Destinations , Sailing Races

Let’s set sail into the thrilling world of regional sailboat races! These competitions offer a unique and exciting twist on the traditional sailing experience.

Regional races center around sailboats vying for supremacy in specific corners of the world, be it a coastal paradise or a cluster of enchanting islands. These events serve as a rallying point for local racers, as sailors hailing from nearby towns and yacht clubs come together to showcase their skills.

What’s particularly enticing about regional races is their inclusivity. Whether you’re piloting a nimble dinghy or commanding a majestic yacht, these races often welcome boats of all types and sailors of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned sea veteran or a novice setting sail for the first time, there’s a class tailored to your needs at most of these local sailing races.

It’s not all about the competition! Regional races transform into grand sailing events, where communities burst to life for multiple days of festivities while showcasing their local flavor. Sailors gather, forge new friendships, and revel in their shared passion for this incredible sport.

Moreover, these races often offer affordable entry fees, ensuring accessibility to aspiring racers of all backgrounds. Some races may be shorter and less arduous than epic ocean crossings, making them ideal for sailors looking to refine their skills. Regional sailboat races are all about honoring the sport of sailing and the remarkable community it nurtures.

Annapolis, MD – Annapolis Boat Shows will host the U.S. debuts of 12 state-of-the art sailboats at its annual fall exhibition and sales show. These new models will join a roster of 140 sailboats exhibiting at Annapolis City Dock from October 10 to 14.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome these new vessels to our show,” says Annapolis Boat Show President Mary Ewenson. “Wind power is among the oldest of boating technologies, and yet every year I am blown away by our exhibitors’ ability to advance it in ways that are innovative and aesthetic.”

Among the boats premiering at this year’s show are the French-built Birdyfish foiling sailboat which can reach speeds of up to 25 knots and the Dufour 44, a sleek racer-cruiser designed by Italian Olympian Umberto Felci.

“I can’t wait for guests of the show to get aboard these boats,” says Ewenson. “Sailboat Show attendees will be the first in the United States to experience these boats on the water in-person, and that’s really thrilling.”

Annapolis Boat Shows produces the premier show series for power and sailing vessels, and its flagship Sailboat Show is the largest in the world. The annual event features multihulls, monohulls, cruisers, racers, and sailing dinghies from manufacturers around the globe, alongside show tents stocked with the latest in nautical gear and accessories, electronics, communication equipment, sails, rigging, education, charter companies, clubs, and more.

Description:

A big fifty-footer, brought to you by Swiftsure Yachts, is exactly what you need to comfortably share your faraway journeys, whether high-latitude or tropical. While the first model in the range is ideal for a couple going around the world, the 52 can welcome family and friends for the time necessary to share the most beautiful places on our planet.

The core of the Garcia Exploration concept remains unchanged. Only a little more than a meter of draft when it is necessary, it is indeed a centerboard. The grey of the hull doesn’t hide the solidity of aluminum, even if the shapes carved by exceptional metalworkers could have been reminiscent of the precision of a molded hull. Rudders and helm stations could only ever be in pairs for Olivier Racoupeau when it comes to controlling a modern, powerful hull with your fingertips, a lifestyle in a space as vast as… all the oceans of the world.

At the front of the very large cockpit with its cleverly designed ergonomics, the rigid cap, which protects two real watchkeeping stations, also offers a real transition zone before going into the warm interior.

You pass the solid watertight doors of the companionway in three smooth steps. Whether you are standing at the companionway or in the galley, sitting in the vast saloon or at the central helm station, you’ll never miss a moment of the planet as it passes by through the windows.

Description:

New to the show, the Mackay Bieker Moth is founded on a no-compromise performance philosophy that aims to deliver the fastest single-handed foiling experience possible. It’s sleek, stealth-looking composite hull is designed to foil above the water at speeds of between 24 to 35 knots. Reducing aero drag is vital to the Mackay Bieker’s performance so next to nothing protrudes on the deck and wing. All mechanical connections and control lines operate under the deck. Adjusting these controls is made easy through a custom-made carbon cleat plate that sits flush on the wing.

The Mackay Bieker’s composite wings are one continuous, smooth form, where all joins sit flush, which optimizes aerodynamics further.

Description:

The Salish Voyager is a truly expedition-worthy small craft that rows as well as it sails, so you can take it just about anywhere you’d want a small boat to go. The balanced lug rig is fun to sail and quick to rig. That makes it easy to get out on the water and take advantage of favorable winds at a moment’s notice. The unique sliding rowing seat design leaves the floor open for maximum utility and can be set up for both single and tandem rowing. Best of all, the boat can be configured for rowing and sailing at the same time, so you can easily switch modes as conditions change.

A self-bailing floor pairs with generous secondary flotation, offering seaworthiness and simple self-rescue. Spacious dry-storage options offer plenty of room for your food & gear, and the cockpit is even spacious enough to comfortably sleep aboard. The hull design is derived from the classic Jersey Beach Skiff, a 19th-Century fishing boat with a bow well-suited to cutting through chop and a flat box keel for easy beach launching and landing. Taken together, this makes the Salish Voyager the perfect boat for anything from an afternoon cruising the harbor, to full expeditions exploring the coastline and getting back to nature.

Maryland Outdoor Equity Grants Awarded to Four Projects Focused on Recreational Access and Inclusion

In July, Defensores de la Cuenca used tents and gear purchased with a Maryland Outdoor Equity Grant for a group camping trip at Assateague State Park, dubbed Playafest. Maryland Department of Natural Resources photo.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources launched a new pilot program this year that awarded $27,000 to four different outdoor recreation activities and opportunities in Maryland’s underserved communities.

The following projects were funded as part of the pilot:

  • A program to provide camping equipment for children in Baltimore through the organization Mentoring Our Rising Entrepreneurs ;
  • A new outdoor gear library serving the Latin American community through Defensores de la Cuenca ;
  • A community garden in Edmondson Village at the home of the Young Successful Leaders organization;
  • And a paddling program for military veterans through the Live Water Foundation .

The funding from the Great Maryland Outdoors Act was distributed through the Maryland Outdoor Equity Grant pilot program. The pilot program is a partnership between the Department of Natural Resources and Together Outdoors, a private-sector coalition focused on ensuring equity in outdoor recreation. The Department of Natural Resources’ Office of Outdoor Recreation coordinated the overall effort.

“The Maryland Outdoor Equity Grant program will create lifelong opportunities, events and activities that make people feel safe and excited to get outside,” Office of Outdoor Recreation Director Sandi Olek said. “We want to create a shared community experience through outdoor recreation. These activities will lay the foundation for the next generation of stewards and environmental advocates who will lead the charge in protecting Maryland’s natural resources

The gear distributed to organizations will allow them to camp, fish, and boat for years to come. Connecting with the outdoors and stepping out into nature can help concentration, reduce depression, reduce risk of heart disease, and improve community wellness, according to multiple studies about the benefits of spending time outdoors. That positive bond turns into environmental stewardship.

Together Outdoors is part of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable , a coalition of outdoor recreation associations representing more than 110,000 businesses. The organization provided $5,000 of in-kind support by providing administrative and technical support for the program.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with the State of Maryland to support impactful local efforts that are making the Great Outdoors more welcoming for all,” said Ambreen Tariq, Together Outdoors coalition lead and senior program director at Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. “Through a strategic blend of public and private resources, we can now leverage our collective resources strategically to support grassroots organizations and help bridge the Adventure Gap for underrepresented communities.”

This year’s recipients are listed below.

Defensores de la Cuenca  (Watershed Defenders) is a Latino-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects Spanish speakers to nature through shared experiences and opportunities to preserve and defend the Chesapeake Bay watershed for a healthier mind, body, and soul. Funding contributes to a gear bank that increases access to outdoor recreation activities by Latino communities who are underrepresented in that field. In July, Defensores de la Cuenca used the tents and gear for a group camping trip at Assateague State Park, dubbed Playafest.

Live Water Foundation inspires and empowers by facilitating watersports programs that improve health, wellness and the environment. Live Water Foundation currently supports three initiatives within the Veteran community, underprivileged and disabled youth, and promoting clean waterways . Funding will be used to support therapeutic water based  activities for military veterans.  The goal of the programs will be to inspire participants to be champions in enhancing the waterways in which they paddle, and inspire a lifestyle of health and wellness through watersports activities

Mentoring Our Rising Entrepreneurs is a homeschool cooperative and nonprofit organization based in Baltimore, serving children ages 7-17. The organization supplements the parent’s primary teaching by offering a safe, secure place where students can receive academic support, entrepreneurial mentoring and learn about project-based services. Funding will cover the cost of camping materials, which will provide 50–75 youths from Baltimore the ability to set out on excursions, enjoy nature and explore new things.

Young Successful Leaders develops youth ages 10-25 into leaders and entrepreneurs, focusing on financial literacy and workforce development. The organization seeks to make a difference in communities where leadership is lacking. Funding will be used to promote local agriculture and community recreation. Enhancements include community clean up activities, a rock wall for teens and a community garden. The Edmonson Village garden will provide a space for outdoor activities, such as yoga.
