Iconic superyacht Athena back on the market for $70 million

Athena the luxury superyacht owned by internet billionaire Jim Clark has been put up for sale for $70 million. The iconic luxury schooner, featuring three masts that stretch 190-feet above the water, was one of the largest private sailing yachts when it was launched in 2004.

Clark has had the yacht giant on and off the market since 2012, but it seems recently to have been replaced by the 100-foot-long all carbon-fiber Comanche in the tycoon’s affection.

Athena has a range of 4000 nautical miles and is able to accommodate 12 guests in five luxury VIP cabins and 19 crew. Its large master suite features a separate study, walk-in-wardrobe and spa bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub. It was built by Royal Huisman and takes inspiration from the 1920s Krupp built motor yacht Talitha. Athena has a cruising speed of 14 knots and a maximum speed of 18 knots.

In July 2012 Athena was listed for sale at an asking price of $95 million. After no firm offers were received the price was reduced to $75 million in 2014. In the summer of 2014 the yacht was listed for charter in the South Pacific priced at $296,000.

Yacht of the Week: S/Y Athena

S/Y Athena , a 2004 Royal Huisman sailing yacht, is our yacht of the week for her beautifully classic design from Pieter Beeldsnijder and Dykstra Naval Architects . To this day, Athena is ranked as one of the all-time great superyachts thanks to her timeless aesthetics and impressive physical dimensions. She has received several awards thus far, including Best Sailing Yacht and Best Interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2005 and Best Refitted Yacht at the World Superyacht Awards in 2012.

This summer, the elegant sailing yacht is at the Royal Huisman refit shipyard for a range of service works which will keep her in first-class operational condition. Her rigs have been removed and she is in the covered hall, ready to begin her Huisfit refit. Her main engines and gensets will be overhauled, while updates to various board systems and piping will also take place alongside a full service of her rigging and a full repaint.

At 90 metres in length, Athena is the world’s sixth largest sailing yacht. She has an impressive logbook of globe-circling cruises, including adventures to Papua for the exquisite diving areas, the South Pacific and the Caribbean.

Athena was built in 2004 for Internet entrepreneur James H. Clark, taking inspiration from the 1920s motoryacht Talitha. Athena has undergone two refits, in 2008 and 2014, for minor upgrades and maintenance projects, again from the specialist Huisfit team.

Beeldsnijder and Dykstra combined their talents to create one of the world’s largest and most luxurious three-masted schooners. With classical inspirations from Talitha and historic schooners, Dykstra created a very traditional deck layout and sail plan for the three masts.

Athena ’s naval architecture is incredibly powerful, with over 1,888sq nautical miles of sail power and up to 55 Rondal captive and drum winches allow for lightning fast tacks under full sail. Using Alustar plate mast construction, even the tallest of Athena ’s three masts can fit snugly through a bridge height of 62m. The hydraulically operated crows nest is ideal for viewing the varnished teak decks of this yacht from above, which embodies the golden age of sailing.

Internally, Beeldsnijder worked closely with Californian designer Rebecca Bradley to create cleverly divided areas that exude classical comfort. Warm woods, traditional furnishings and fabrics, and unique artwork alongside the closed-plan layout ensure guests feel as though they have stepped back in time.

The interior design duo created five magnificent cabins that can accommodate up to 10 guests across a master suite bedecked in marble, three double cabins, one twin cabin and two pullman beds. She can also carry up to 20 crew.

Athena is a wonderful blend of the art and beauty of traditional yachting and a modern luxury lifestyle. Briefly the largest sailing yacht in the world, Athena remains one of the all-time greats of the sailing industry and her refit looks set to make sure she remains at the forefront for many more years.

$10.9 million price drop on 90m S/Y ‘Athena’

The largest second-hand sailing yacht publicly for sale is now priced at a reduced $59 million….

The owner of the 90m three-masted schooner Athena , currently for sale with Burgess and Merle Wood & Associates, has instructed a $10.9 million reduction in price. She is now for sale at $59 million.  

Delivered in 2005 by Royal Huisman – regarded by many as the best sailing yacht builder in the world by quality – Athena has naval architecture from Dykstra Naval Architects, exterior work by Pieter Beeldsnijder and the interior design work of Rebecca Bradley, a design collaboration that has achieved a stylish balance of classic and contemporary sailing yacht design.

With eight completed sailing yacht transactions in 2016, Burgess has its finger on the pulse for such listings. Henry Craven-Smith, sales broker at Burgess says, “The market has almost certainly been towards the pedigree, high performance custom sailing yacht sector,” adding that there is currently a “lack of pedigree inventory on the brokerage market.”

The 50m+ new build sailing superyacht market is one typified by innovation – seen by the likes of recent projects, 85m Aquijo , 70m Sybaris and 142.8m A .

But, much like the re-sale of highly bespoke motoryachts, finding a buyer with the same exact taste, vision and intended purpose, is challenging. However, as Craven-Smith astutely highlights, “It would be naïve to comment on the possible residual value of any iconic sailing yachts. After all, it only takes one buyer.”

With many of the 50m+ projects today, it appears that sailing performance comes secondary to comfort, but Athena looks to offer both – and in abundance. She has the volume (1,125gt), guest capacity and asking price of a 65–70m motoryacht, and a staggering 2,500 sqm sail area.

While the volume for pound is better in a motoryacht, when you see a specification sheet like Athena’s , the large sailing yacht ownership demise is baffling. Craven-Smith adds: “I have one or two large yacht clients who would never consider building anything other than a sailing yacht. To them it is about having something aesthetically spectacular and highly unique that no-one else has. Like a Monet or Van Gogh.”

The famed 90 metre sailing superyacht Athena, jointly listed for sale by Burgess and Merle Wood & Associates , has had a $10,900,000 price reduction.

One of the largest sailing yachts in the world , this  yacht for sale  has a pure Dutch pedigree, combining the talents of Pieter Beeldsnijder for exterior design with the naval architectural skills of Dykstra Naval Architects and the craftsmanship of the celebrated Royal Huisman yard.

Built in aluminium to Lloyd's class and MCA coded, Athena was delivered to much industry acclaim in 2004. She boasts superb engineering, state-of-the-art sail handling gear and interior joinery of the highest quality in lightly stained mahogany. Accommodation is for 12 guests in five cabins configured as a full-beam master suite, three doubles with queen size beds and a twin cabin with two Pullman berths, and all with en-suite bathroom facilities.

A regular at the world's top superyacht regattas, Athena is as fast as she is good looking. On deck 55 Rondal captive and drum winches allow lightning fast tacks under full sail while sails can be set and stowed at the press of a button or two. The tri-mast schooner rig by Rondal provides some 2,500 square metres of sail power and is complete with in-mast furling for the topsails and in boom furling for the carbon fibre gaffs.

Under power, twin 3516B Caterpillar engines give her a cruising range of 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots.

Currently cruising in the Caribbean, Athena is now asking $59 million.

90m (295ft) sailing yacht Athena was successfully refitted by Orams Marine Services in Auckland , New Zealand , undergoing  a fully comprehensive maintenance and service 9-month program. The Athena superyacht is a beautiful three-masted aluminium schooner, launched by the prestigious Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman in 2004.

Max Cumming, captain of the superyacht Athena, says the owner of the seven-year-old schooner had a simple instruction when he told him what he wanted: “Make her look new again.”

But finding a place to fit the 90m megayacht Athena to give her a makeover is not that easy.

Nine months later and with the luxury yacht Athena repainted, he is thrilled that he was able to get the refit completed at Orams Marine Village .

“Being Kiwi – and at a guess I reckon about a quarter of the world superyachts are skippered by Kiwis – it is fantastic to be able to show off the world class tradesmen and their ingenuity when it comes to solving problems.”

The refit turned out to be a real life changer for one 18-year-old Kiwi. He was helping in his Dad’s business with some of the cover work on the boat and earned himself a fulltime job on the Athena yacht. When she sails for the Caribbean through Tahiti soon, he will be starting a career Max himself stumbled over just over 23 years ago.

A Bay of Islands/Cook Islands boy, Max started life as a commercial fisherman before joining the R Tucker Thompson Sailing Training Trust. When he left for overseas he had no idea about superyachts and was amazed to learn from some new friends he met that he could get paid for sailing.

“It is a great business for New Zealand,” he says. “I am sure there is a lot of foreign exchange that comes back to the country from people buying houses or land, or helping support family. And Kiwi crews and our sailing successes certainly help bring some big projects back here.”

Max says one huge advantage Auckland has is the proximity of the marine sector to the centre of the city. It saves in travel costs for the crew – and keeps them happy.

“Cost is a big factor. While the superyachts might look opulent, their owners insist on value for money. I run a tight budget for Athena. While the value of the NZ dollar is higher than it has been historically, the marine sector here has to look for every way it can to remain cost competitive.”

Italian navy specialist divers are combing the superyacht on which tycoon Mike Lynch and six others died to try to find out why it sank last month off Sicily.

An investigating magistrate has reportedly asked the Italian navy’s secretive Comsubin unit to search for clues as to what happened , so he can check them against statements given by the crew.

Sicilian magistrates are investigating the yacht’s captain, a British yacht engineer and another British crew member over their role in the sinking of the Bayesian in a storm off Sicily last month.

Fifteen people, including Mr Lynch’s wife, survived the sinking, and other vessels nearby stayed afloat.

Mr Lynch died alongside  his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, the boat’s chef and four others who were on board the British-flagged yacht, celebrating his acquittal after a decade-long legal battle.

About six divers from the Comsubin unit are combing the 180ft superyacht for electronic equipment, including data storage and CCTV footage, according to The Times .

They are also checking whether doors or hatches were left open, a source close to the investigation told the paper.

Sources close to New Zealander James Cutfield, 51, the captain, told the Italian newspaper  Corriere Della Sera  that is living through the darkest days of his life.

A large-scale search operation by Italy’s fire service was carried out over for five days as they retrieved the seven bodies.

Divers faced debris and furniture that blocked the narrow passageways of the sunken yacht.

But the sinking has puzzled maritime experts , who said a vessel such as the Bayesian, built by high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm.

The naval diving specialists from Comsubin, which is the Italian navy equivalent of the British Special Boat Service, have now begun work, supported by a navy minesweeper with a decompression chamber to help in deep-dive operations.

The authorities say the vessel’s owner, Revton, which is controlled by Lynch’s widow Angela Bacares, will fund the operation to raise the yacht.

Revton has employed a Genoa-based diving company, Drafinsub, to use sonar and a submersible robot to study the state of the Bayesian to plan how to raise it.

“With the robot we will video the hull to see how the yacht and its mast are positioned on the sea floor, while the sonar we have on a vessel can map the sea floor and check the position of the anchor and chain,” a Drafinsub official told The Times .

Around 18,000 litres of fuel must be syphoned out of the yacht’s tanks to avoid any spillage and make the vessel lighter to lift.

Then buoyancy balloons may be used or ties could be attached to the yacht to hoist it to the surface.
