Re-Homing Old Boats: A Sustainable Alternative to BoatBreaking

Finding a foster family for your boat.

When encountering an old, green, and dirty boat, the immediate impulse might be to break the boat up, and scrap her. Fortunately for our wallet and the planet, in many cases the dirt is all but superficial.

What is Re-Homing? Re-Homing is a service designed to find a new enthusiast who will take on an old boat for free and restore it. This is not just another marketplace listing; we proactively search for a suitable new owner. Our process involves sifting through potential candidates to ensure they are responsible and ready to act now, thus saving you from the hassle of dealing with viewings, negotiations, delays and more delays.

Which Boats Are Suitable for Re-Homing? Boats suitable for Re-Homing include:

  • Boats from stalled DIY projects due to changing circumstances.
  • Boats inherited by those who aren’t boating enthusiasts themselvees.
  • Boats that can no longer be maintained due to health or job constraints.

Often, selling these boats can be less than ideal—you might only net a small sum after months of dealing with time-wasters on social media and over the phone.

Our Solution   We offer a seamless Re-Homing process. Through our extensive marketing network, which includes a large following of enthusiastic boaters, we find a new owner who is eager to take on a new project. This approach allows you to dispose of an unfinished project or an old boat with minimal cost. The new owner takes the boat for free but covers all related expenses, such as lifting and transport.

Re-Homing Listing Fees:

  • £250.00 for boats
  • £75.00 for dinghies and tenders

If you have a boat to re-home please fill in the online form following this link https://forms.gle/tTiHcLfd1q86MzAKA

BRISTOL Docks is a favourite place for people to abandon their boats, so Bristol City Council is putting them up for sale.

Narrowboats

There are not only the usual sea-going craft, but narrowboats too that have been abandoned.

However, as can be expected the boats are all in poor condition, and are being moved from their moorings to the  Harbour Master's office in Baltic Wharf, to be sold.

There are 36 boats that will be auctioned-off, from kayaks to sailing yachts, with the narrowboats value estimated at between £4,000 and £5,000 and the cabin cruisers value estimated at between £800 and £4,000. Helen Hewitt, Spokeswoman for Bristol City Council, told that  the clearance would free up moorings for boat owners on a waiting list for a space in the docks, adding:

"It's a regular event where we clear the docks of abandoned boats or boats which have not had their mooring fees paid by their owners."

One yacht for sale is estimated at £4,500, that was taken off a boater who had misbehaved during the Harbour Festival by ramming other boats.

The auction is online  between the 4th and 8th April. For more information about the auction, which will be conducted by Bristol Commercial Valuers and Auctioneers, visit www.dnfa.com/bcva

Lonely Boats service hooks up ‘neglected’ projects with DIYers

Wednesday, January 31st, 2024

Written by: Zella Compton

Boat disposal and salvage specialist Boatbreakers says it turned into a ‘match-making’ company in 2023 — with the idea of saving the UK’s languishing marine projects. And so far, the Gosport-based company calculates that its ‘Lonely Boats’ platform has saved circa 40 vessels from scrap and thousands of pounds in storage fees for owners who are desperate to get rid of their problem boats.

“We know that there are thousands of lonely boats out there,” says Luke Edney, Boatbreakers’ communications manager.

abandoned sailboats for sale uk

“These are once-loved vessels sitting unused and forgotten in boat yards, marinas, and even in people’s gardens. These boats may not be in terrible condition, but they have been neglected and unloved. Some owners may just not be confident in listing a boat online and will not know where to turn if a broker isn’t interested.”

That’s where Lonely Boats comes into play. Edney is putting these neglected and unloved boats in a space in front of a specific audience who are ready to mingle.

After Boatbreakers set up its Boat Scrapyard Facebook Group, Edney says the problem of lonely boats became more apparent. Fifty thousand plus people had joined Boat Scrapyard, and many of them had semi-decent boats they were looking to get rid of — not ready for scrapping but not ripe to sell to owners looking for a ready-to-go workable boat either.

abandoned sailboats for sale uk

He says these are the types of boats which can be sold as a ‘project’. Thus Lonely Boats was set up to help owners who are desperate to shift their problem boat (and avoid the trap of costly storage) sell in the right place, to the right audience.

“Over the years, there have been many boats that, in hindsight, might just have sold as a project,” says Edney. “So we have decided to put more emphasis on saving these Lonely Boats from scrap.

“We believe that there might be someone out there who could give these boats a new lease of life. Now our Lonely Boats page is perfect to put a spotlight on these forgotten boats. It’s a service that we also extend to boat yards and marinas who can suddenly become the owners of these vessels if owners stop paying. Listing the boat through the Lonely Boats page might just save them a costly disposal bill and gain them a new customer.”

abandoned sailboats for sale uk

Boatbreakers has been running for close to 20 years. “We think that we are a good judge of what might be worth saving,” Edney says.

“If a boat is too far gone and could be a potential danger to anyone else, it won’t be shared. We charge an upfront fee of £100 to share the boat and whatever you get for the boat is yours. Even if you give the boat away, its only cost you the initial fee. Typically it takes a day or two to find a list of people willing to make an offer for the Lonely Boat. And it saves the original owner the potentially much higher cost of scrapping it outright.”

Three years ago,  MIN  ran a series of articles looking at the burgeoning problem of end-of-life  fibreglass yachts and how to get rid of them responsibly . At the time, Edney said the industry was suffering from an extreme case of sloping shoulders as more and more fibreglass hulls were abandoned around the UK coastline. He bemoaned the lack of interest in the issue, the lack of leadership and the lack of plans to tackle the challenges. Now, he says, people are talking about the issue . It’s on the agenda, but not much is actually changing amid calls for boat registration to help decrease the number of abandoned yachts.

New initiative to look at the rise in abandoned boats

  • Katy Stickland
  • July 18, 2022

The number of abandoned boats around the coasts of the UK and Europe is growing. Now a new initiative is to look at the scale of the problem and improve how end-of-life boats are disposed of

Abandoned boats in a boatyard

The number of boats being abandoned around the UK is rising, especially in the south east and south west. Credit: Boatbreakers.com

The scale of boat dumping around the UK and North-East Atlantic is to be examined as part of efforts to tackle the growing problem of end-of-life vessels.

Under the new Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter, the UK Government’s Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is working with other countries to ‘map the scale of the issue’ across the North-East Atlantic region.

It plans to ‘develop guidance to improve waste management for recreational vessels that are no longer wanted or fit for use,’ said a DEFRA spokesperson.

The Welsh Government is also funding a three year Nature Marine Litter project to raise awareness of abandoned boats, which starts in the autumn.

A senior advisor to Natural Resources Wales, Dawn Beech, said: ‘We are working with partners to increase awareness within the boating community of the financial and environmental impacts of flytipping boats. We are also working to influence end-of-life solutions, as well as tackling existing hotspots.’

A lack of regulation about the disposal of old boats and disposal costs – around £3,000 for a 30ft boat –  can result in vessels being dumped.

A abandoned yacht with no mast and a blue hull on top of a trailer

The cost of disposal is around £100 per foot, so £3,000 for a 30ft yacht. Credit: Boatbreakers.com

They can only be removed if they are a danger to navigation , and often the long process in tracking down an owner means boats degrade and become a threat to the environment .

One of the biggest issues is with GRP boats , as glass reinforced plastic can’t currently be recycled and is instead sent to landfill.

Researchers at the University of Brighton are currently studying microparticle contamination in Chichester Harbour, with the focus on GRP, which has been found to have been injected by marine animals like oysters and mussels.

Often, the cost of responsible disposal has to be picked up by harbour authorities or local councils. Last year, Cornwall’s Port of Truro spent £125,000 to remove two abandoned boats.

The UK Harbour Masters’ Association said the problem is getting worse, especially in popular sailing areas like the south east and south west, and members are now collating figures on abandoned boats.

‘It’s always been an issue but we have seen an increase post-COVID,’ explained the association’s chief executive, Captain Martin Willis.

‘Many people didn’t have the opportunity to visit their boats and now they have degraded and require a lot of expenditure to get back to a serviceable condition. For boats at the lower end, the option for some is to abandon them. Also the boat buying boom during COVID meant some people bought boats unaware of the attention they require and costs to keep them serviceable and in good condition. Now, with the cost of living squeeze some people are just walking away from their responsibilities.’

Captain Willis said harbours ask for proof of ownership and boat insurance when a yacht is moored there, but this doesn’t help in tracking down boat owners who default on harbour or mooring dues. He would like to see a national registration scheme for boats.

Luke Edney of the UK’s largest boat disposal firm, Boatbreakers, agrees. He says data protection laws means information on ownership can’t be accessed via the Small Ships Register, so a national registration scheme would ‘hopefully push more people to be a bit more responsible’.

Continues below…

The high cost of disposal often means it is cheaper to abandon GRP boats.

A solution to the problem of end-of-life boats and how to dispose of them could be on the horizon

The future of boat building Building with pre-preg materials is efficient, but the hull must be 'cooked' at a precise temperature to cure it. Credit: Eva-Stina Kjellman

Boat building: what will yachts be made from in the future?

Sam Fortescue shines a light on boat building jargon and looks into a future devoid of fibreglass

He would also like to see a sales tax on every boat sale, with the money being centrally held to pay for the recycling of flytipped boats.

‘A boat might be sold five or 10 times, but it will be the last owner who has to foot the bill to get rid of it. It is likely the owner won’t have much money, as he bought a cheap boat, and won’t have the money to dispose of it responsibly,’ said Edney, who says 20% of Boatbreakers work is disposing of abandoned boats.

‘Some people are responsible and after weighing up the cost of mooring fees and maintenance realise it is cost effective to recycle their boat, but ultimately any sort of national scheme would need to be Government funded to work. In France, free-recycling services for boats exist, and all owners have to pay for is the cost of getting the boats there.’

There are concerns that the rise in the cost of living in the UK will result in more abandoned boats. Credit: Boatbreakers.com

Edney said that ultimately, until GRP can be fully recycled, the problem will not go away. Although there has been some success in recycling GRP wind turbine blades, the GRP on boats, due to the different resins and other materials, is more complex.

In 2019, the European Boating Association (EBA) set up a working party to examine the legacy of existing end-of-life GRP and composite boats and how future designs could take into account dismantling and the use of recyclable materials.

It concluded that as well as ensuring boats are designed and built from material which can be reused, recycled and recovered as much as possible, extended producer responsibility should also be introduced.

This could be via a levy on new boat sales to fund disposal or by allowing owners to pass old boats back to their original builders, where possible, who would then dispose of them.

In Wales, abandoned boats can be reported at www.flytippingactionwales.org .

Abandoned craft or unpaid moorage fees?

Abandoned craft or unpaid moorage fees?

Do you have problems with abandoned craft or unpaid moorage fees?

In recent years many boat owners have been finding it difficult to maintain moorage fees.

Increasingly, marina owners are reluctantly left with little option but to take legal action to recover outstanding debts and release valuable moorage.

Outstanding Auction Success

Often, this results in marinas taking lawful possession of vessels and other marine items and selling them.

Hobbs Parker Marine Auctions provides marina owners with a professional on-site auction service which consistently achieves excellent results.

500+ Buyers

500+ Buyers

Our auctions are widely publicised via this website, our special marine auction email alerts and a dedicated Facebook Page .

A recent auction at Ramsgate Marina in Kent saw more than 500 enthusiastic buyers attend the disposal of twenty lots in Thanet District Council’s possession.

All Vessels Sold

All Vessels Sold

At our first auction which took place in 2011 all the vessels were sold and the sale raised approximately £40,000 towards unpaid moorage.

An additional important benefit was that many of the new owners took up new moorage with the marina.

We have held auctions on behalf of Thanet District Council every year since.

Boats seized from Bristol Harbour to be auctioned off for as little as £80

The 'star attraction' is more than 40ft long and called The Queen of Sheba

Boats impounded at Bristol Harbour are set to go up for auction – and could be available for as little as £80.

Some 22 abandoned boats will be auctioned online between February 1 and March 1, with 82 per cent of proceeds to go towards regeneration of the harbourside .

Auctioneer Graham Cockle said: “The boats are seized for various reasons by the Harbour Authority.

“Some people just disappear, while other people just fall into arrears so much they decide the boat’s not worth it and the Harbour can have it.

“We run an auction of this kind around every two years. I’d estimate we raised around £16,000 for the Harbour last time, and we’re targeting something in that region again.”

The Queen of Sheba

abandoned sailboats for sale uk

Mr Cockle, owner of Crown Consultants and Auctioneers, believes the majority of the takings may come from the sale of a classic Nelson Pilot boat dating back to 1969.

More than 40ft in length and 11ft wide, the “star attraction” twin-engine Nelson is named The Queen of Sheba and worth around £15,000, Mr Cockle says.

The auction listing says the boat has seating for up to eight people and is in “remarkable condition given she has languished in the Bristol Harbour for a few years”.

On the other end of the scale are dinghies, canoes and other boats expected to go for a lower price.

Mr Cockle said: “If you have the DIY aspect about yourself, there will be some you can pick up for about £80.

“We have boats going back as far as the 1960s, and if they’re a good representation of a very early model, there might not be many around.”

30 days to remove your boat

Buyers will not be able to just keep their new boats moored in Bristol Harbour, with a waiting list of more than a year for a berth.

“You’ll have 30 days to remove your boat from the Harbour after the auction, because it would have to go on a waiting list,” Mr Cockle said.

“Money raised from the sales goes back into the Harbour, so it’s a good thing for the local community and it clears away the boats no longer being used.

abandoned sailboats for sale uk

“The Harbour is evolving all the time, and it needs to have the old removed to make room for the new.”

You can meet Mr Cockle’s team for public viewings of the boats every Saturday and Sunday in February, between 10am and 4pm.

They will be found under a yellow gazebo outside the Harbourmaster’s office at Underfall Yard.

Crown Consultants and Auctioneers will take an 18 per cent cut of the proceeds, with the rest going to Bristol Harbour.

To enter a lot or register, email [email protected] or phone 07557043636.

You can see individual listings for the boats here .

Have Fun Taking a Narrowboat on a River Cruise

Riding a narrowboat or canal boat around the canals and waterways is a way to see the countryside in a leisurely manner. Narrowboats were originally pulled by draft animals and people, and they were later powered by steam. Modern narrowboats are used as recreational boats, and you can find an inexpensive, pre-owned canal boat for sale on eBay that will let you relive the old days on the river.

Narrowboats are all standardly sized at 2.08 metres. Narrowboats are designed to fit all the locks on the canals and rivers in the UK, and this is the width size that allows free passage. The maximum length of a narrowboat is around 21.95 metres, which corresponds to the length of the longest locks on the waterway systems.

Narrowboats have differing types of sterns, of which these are the main three types:

  • Traditional stern - This stern size is the smallest and offers the least amount of external space. These narrowboats are based on traditional working canal boats and have a short back deck, which means more room inside.
  • Cruiser stern - Narrowboats with cruiser sterns have a large external space, which is ideal for recreational cruising on the river. These boats make great holiday boats and have plenty of outside space for socialising. They are also good choices for renting out to large parties.
  • Semi-traditional - These narrowboats are a compromise between a traditional and cruiser style of stern. They combine the look of a traditional stern with the outside space of a cruiser. These canal boats also are good for renting out for party cruises.

Just as more people are choosing to live in caravans, more people are also choosing to live on narrowboats. If you choose to adopt this lifestyle, you can often find used narrowboats for sale online that are already outfitted with everything you need for life on the river. You can also purchase a used narrowboat for sale and customise it yourself with any features you like.

Most narrowboats are powered by diesel engines, and electric narrowboats require a diesel generator to charge the batteries. All narrowboats have two 12-volt battery banks, one of which starts the engine and one which powers on-boat objects like the lights, water pump, and other appliances. You will need to use 12-volt compatible appliances or use an inverter to convert your power to 240 volts when running power on the boat. You can also hook up to shore power.
