catamaran sig 45

SIG is a range of luxury cruising catamarans designed to be fast, innovative and easy to handle. The intention is to make 60’ and 80’ versions available, but so far only the 45s have made it into production.

 width=

Particularly elegant lines, a well-organized deck layout for small crews and spacious living areas are just some of the features of this comfortable catamaran which was originally designed for day sailing but turned out to be a very competent blue-water cruiser .

LeBreton SIG 45

N ow for a new kind of European boat. This cruising catamaran comes from the LeBreton yard in Amsterdam. The design work was done by three teams. The exterior styling, hull design and general naval architecture was done by Van Peteghem Lauriot Prevost in France. The interior design is by Bjorn Johansson in the UK. Technical support for the rig and deck layout came from Bruno Peyron.

The result is a spectacular design and just the kind of boat I would have loved to own back when I was 35 years old. Unlike most cruising catamarans, this cat does not use the bridgedeck area for accommodations. That allows for a dramatic reduction in displacement. This 45-foot cat weighs 12,000 pounds, less than half the displacement of the Lagoon 39 cruising cat. Clearly, this cat was designed with performance as the primary goal.

The hulls show a wave-piercing type of bow, and there is zero overhang in either the bow or the stern. In plan form the hulls are slightly asymmetrical flaring out inboard amidships to gain some internal volume. If I use this flared-out section for max beam I get an individual hull L/B of 6.23. Skinny hulls make for fast boats.

Overall beam is 27 feet 6 inches. The D/L for this boat is only 59.3 compared to 212 for the 39-foot Lagoon cat. The daggerboards are carbon and outboard in each hull, and give a board-down draft of 9 feet and a board up draft of 3 feet 10 inches due to rudder depth. The rudders are also carbon fiber.

The accommodation plan is spread into the two hulls with no accommodations in the bridgedeck area. The connecting span is just one big expanse of working "cockpit" area with seats outboard. In the port hull you have the owner's double berth aft in a spacious cabin. Forward of this there is a dinette that looks to fit four people. Forward of that is the galley and forward of that is a large head.

In the starboard hull you have double-berth cabins in each end, and a large head forward of the amidships office-type of area. I can't say this is a cozy layout where you will gather with friends on a blustery night in harbor. But it is comfortable and it works. There is just no way you can get a conventional-feeling layout into those long, narrow hulls. But I don't think buyers of this boat have convention in mind anyway. There are watertight bulkheads in each end of each hull.

The rig is big. The carbon fiber airfoil mast is rotating, and I think that given it is really part of the sail power of the rig we should include the mast area as sail area, adding 92 square feet. So, if I add that to the mainsail and the self-tacking jib I get a total sail area of 1,570 square feet and a SA/D of 49.7.

I think that's what I meant when I said I could have owned this boat when I was 35. You will have to be on your toes almost all the time sailing this boat. That is a lot of horsepower. Add the area of the asymmetrical chute and the SA/D goes through the roof. I have never sailed a cat quite like this one so I have no idea of what speeds you could expect but I'd guess in 12 to 15 knots of wind you could see 20 knots of speed with little effort.

On deck the mainsheet traveler spans the connecting beam at the stern. The boat is steered with surprisingly short tillers. Forward is a soft trampoline but aft the connecting deck is rigid and appears to have a teak planked veneer over at least part of it with the rest being nonskid paint.

Halyard winches are clustered at the mast base and I suspect the self-tacking jib sheet is controlled from this bank of winches also. There are three other sheet winches port and starboard aft at the steering stations. These winches also control the broad traveler. The daggerboards are line operated.

On a nice day with 12 knots of steady breeze and a flat sea this cat would be a real blast to sail.

LE BRETON YACHTS SIG45

LE BRETON YACHTS SIG45

The Le Breton Yachts SIG45 electric catamaran combines speed, innovation and grace, taking advantage of the performance, space and stability advantages of a modern performance multihull, but retaining the aesthetic elegance and ergonomics of a modern monohull.

The SIG45 is extraordinarily easy and enjoyable to sail fast. The ride is smooth, predictable and very comfortable. Modern rig and sail handling systems and extremely ergonomic working areas make sailing a pleasure for a small crew. The pilothouses and coamings provide protection to those on deck and frame a huge cockpit (more commonly found on yachts literally twice the size), which is perfect for sail handling, entertaining or just plain relaxing.

The accommodation is inviting and remarkably spacious, providing light, elegant and comfortable quarters for six, with unheard of privacy for a 45ft yacht.

Keeping weight out of the ends of a yacht, particularly one with such slender hulls as the SIG45, is critical to reducing pitching motion. This in turn increases comfort and performance. For this reason, the electric motors, generator and batteries of the SIG45 are located within one meter of the longitudinal centre of gravity, below the pilothouse sole. This also gives excellent access for maintenance. Similarly, the water and fuel tanks and the windlass and anchor chain are located in the main beam.

The boat is currently used for chartering the Greek Island. The company renting it fastsailing.gr is based in Lavrion. For more information about chartering the boat please visit their website: fastsailing.gr

SIG 45 - catamaran for agent 007

My name is SIG! SIG 45 Yes exactly! This is truly a catamaran for agent 007. With many surprises and incredible possibilities. Sasha Goron tested this device for us at the multihull exhibition in La Grand Motte.

Test drive of the sailing catamaran SIG 45

Two of them were built, one in the States and one in Europe, so we got it for a test drive.

Amazing history of creation

Hugo Le Breton  did not want to compromise on the yacht of his dreams and created a masterpiece. The recipe was simple enough - to find like-minded people, people who understood and felt Hugo's idea. The designer was chosen  VPLP , an architectural firm with the strongest track record in the field of multihull yachts. On account of their trimarans  ORMA, Groupama , the pinnacle of their work is the trimaran  Oracle  for America's Cup and the largest cruising catamaran  Hemisphere ... Moreover, he himself was involved as a consultant.  Bruno Peyron , the winner of the Jules Verne Cup, who bypassed  Orange 2  around the world in 50 days. Finally, interior design work  Bjorn Johansson who has won several awards for his creations in the superyacht world.

And as a result, the implementation

An explosive cocktail would not be ready without a worthy manufacturer. Skilled craftsmen were needed in working with a carbon case, they were found in Italy.  Indian yachts , whose lineage is replete with names such as  60 'GROUPE BEL, IMS 46', BRIBON , also make decks for  Wally  and  Swan ... The Italians approached the matter with a twinkle and gave out 5.5 tons of displacement to the mountain, this weight accounts for 134 square meters. m of main sails. Voila! And the boat rushes faster than the wind.

On the water

Outside SIG 45  possesses ideal proportions, it is felt that the marketer's hand has not been applied here for a second. They were not allowed to this creation. And this is nice, because after the crisis you rarely see a truly distinctive and beautiful yacht. So you can admire this boat for a long time.

Entering the huge cockpit, we find a rotating mast, 5 winches and quite normal controls. Nothing supernatural, i.e. a yachtsman with average experience can handle SIG quite well. Yes, I foresee immediately the exclamations of our "experienced" yachtsmen, watching a photo of a kata on one float, about overturns, etc. SIG has a rollover prevention system, which itself deflects the sheets in the event of a dangerous roll or a sharp gust of wind. Like this!

Further more  - we find electric motors in the housings  Oceanvolt , for such a weight and such contours there are plenty of them. And, accordingly, there are no problems with the voltage of 220 V, the diesel generator gives out power in excess. Comfortable cabins are not inferior in comfort to large cruise boats, a convenient navigator's seat, and on the other side the galley is not small in size. This boat cannot be called Puritan.

We go out to sea:  slight hum of electric motors, and it feels like we are floating in air above water. Sharp floats provide excellent comfort on the wave. There are no nuances in raising the sails, everything is just like on a regular cruiser. Burning with impatience, we raised the mainsail in seconds, manually, without any winches.

What happened next can only be described in one word - pleasure. We enjoyed the wind, the sea and the yacht!

Setting the sails  It didn’t take much time and after half a minute we accelerated the catamaran to 8 knots with a wind of 7.5 points, we were going in full hauled, 70 degrees. The speed was virtually unchanged up to 35 degrees! This is out of reach for a cruising catamaran! I sat on the windward side, the tiller did not break out of my hands, there was no tension in the boat's behavior.

Tacking  passed very easily, I forgot to mention that we had an automatic jib, so we coped with the change of tacks together.

It should be noted that the wave height was approximately 0.8 m, but there was no splashing on the beam, the shape of the hulls was perfectly streamlined. This can be traced by the wake.

SIG 45  disposed to walking, instead of the planned two hours we ironed the bay all four. A couple of times we turned around a 42-foot cruise Katana sailing in full sail. Yes, this boat gives the joy of communicating with the sea, I don't want to get off it. We did not get yesterday's strong wind, but even in a weak catamaran behaved excellently. Greg, a shipyard worker, said that he accelerated and kept the speed on this catamaran at 29 knots, well, I tend to believe him.

SIG 45  conquers with its uncompromising attitude in everything. The high cost does not allow it to go mainstream, but it justifies all the money spent on it. Owning and maintaining order on a yacht is not a hassle.  The catamaran perfectly keeps balance, sailing on it is safe for the family crew.

This 45 foot offshore catamaran was built with the utmost care and precision. Designed for speed and style. This was about a 13 month build. A huge amount of time and effort went into the center control area near the mast, 17 lines come into this area along with an anchor chain, control buttons for the electric winches, all integrated above the anchor chain locker. Many of the lines are routed from forward underneath the central control locker an into sheaves that are integrated into carbon cases. This made for many design challenges - not just to make all the equipment work, but also to make sure it looked decent and maintained water proof integrity. Other areas of that were under my direction were the flip down swim steps, and forward rigging integration, winch islands aft near the helms, with electric powered winches. All fabricated with G-10 or carbon fiber reinforcements, throughout bolted or threaded inserts as attachment points.

I may be wrong, but I think there will be a market for it. Who knows, maybe some day a large yacht club (like NYYC) will choose something like this, rather than a performance mono for their one-design fleet. Regardless, if they can get kind of a one-design fleet going, I suspect they will have found a great market niche.

Boat: SIG45 currently in build!
in to clarify a couple of things.
Firstly, we are very happy with the boat. Very fast, easy to sail and an accommodation that surprises everyone who has been on board - it is much bigger than one might suspect. I will be putting some new pictures up on the website as soon as we get out photoshoot completed.
Vegas is right about the fold down swim platform. It is an option, which gives great access plus some additional . the standard boat would have steps on the transom.
I think that there are some differences between the (very nice) boats that have gone before, like those of grainger, shuttleworth, etc and the SIG45.
I think that the closest boats are those of Crowther and Grainger, but relatively speaking, the SIG45 has a lot of accommodation, and quite a lot of deck protection thanks to the twin pilot houses. It is a genuine cruiser fitted out to a high level - not just a with a some beds.
Another is that the hull form is an evolution of VPLP's latest ORMA60 trimarans, which were based on very extensive tank testing. The design is very up to date indeed. This is one of the reasons that there is quite a lot of transom immersion - the boat is not too short, but it was designed this way, with slightly U-shaped sections aft to maximise at higher speeds. The forward sections are rounded and very fine, softing the entry and reducing decelleration and pitching in waves.
It is unfortunately going to be a bit harder to find clients in the current market, but we have a lot of interest in the SIG45, and many client test in the coming weeks. Lets hope that we have something that will attract a few more sailors over to lighter, faster boats. On the basis of the interested buyers so far, most actually seem to be monohull sailors. Just like the lovely Seacart 30 - their first 8 clients were first time buyers!
I would be happy to answer any more questions you might have.
All the best,
Hugo

Discover the Top Power Catamarans for 2024

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: September 10, 2024

Power catamarans have seen a surge in popularity, growing both in size and appeal. These cruise-focused yachts offer homelike comfort, fuel efficiency and user-friendly operation, making them a favorite among avid travelers. Their popularity extends to the bareboat charter market for the same reasons.

In this article, we explore the world’s top power catamarans, ranging from a 36-footer ideal for a cruising couple to a 78-footer perfect for entertaining friends and family. The propulsion options are diverse, including outboards, diesel inboards, hybrids, and even all-solar setups.

Top Luxury Power Catamarans

The following power catamarans are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Fountaine Pajot MY44 : A family-oriented cat suitable for long-range cruising and aimed at owner-operators.
  • Silent Yachts 60 : This is a catamaran that can cruise comfortably for long distances using emissions-free solar-electric propulsion.
  • Horizon PC74 : With interior and deck space like a much larger vessel, the PC74 is perfect for cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean.
  • Aquila 36 : This beefy 36-footer is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran.
  • Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat : A spacious design, this vessel fits the volume of a 130-foot-long monohull into just 78 feet of length overall.
  • Horizon PC68 : This cat has a stable ride, long range, volume to spare and intriguing layout options.
  • Two Oceans 555 : An elegantly simple yet luxurious 55-foot custom with the space and amenities of a much larger vessel.
  • Lagoon 630 : From its open salon to its spacious decks, the Lagoon is a comfortable and luxurious platform.
  • Fountaine Pajot MY5 : A midsize cruiser with serious big-boat space for family and friends.
  • Prestige Yachts M8 : The voluminous 65-footer lets owners customize onboard spaces.
  • Aquila 47 Molokai : Calling all anglers: This cat has 60-plus-knot speed and is set up for serious bluewater adventure.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the  Horizon PC74  is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36  is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the  Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat  is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555

With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the  Lagoon 630 MY  burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY5 is a standout feature, offering virtually unobstructed 360-degree ocean views and an elevated beach club vibe. Aft of the off-center starboard helm is a spacious area perfect for entertaining, complete with a wet bar, refrigeration center, and ample seating. It’s the most popular space aboard according to the builder. And if the weather turns for the worse, a second helm station in the saloon allows the skipper to pilot the MY5 in climate-controlled comfort.

Prestige Yachts M8

How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8 , at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

Aquila 47 Molokai

With every boat, there’s an origin story. In the case of the Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, it starts with MarineMax, which saw people renting boats for bareboat charters. MarineMax Vacations was born. After experimenting with several production yachts, the company decided to build its own: the Aquila line, designed for charter as well as for sale to owner-operators.
