Cruising Boat Spotlight: The Columbia 50

By: Pat Reynolds Cruising Tips , Sailboats

In our new series of great cruising boats we begin with a crowd favorite – the Columbia 50. With its bubble top, long graceful lines and inherent speed, the Columbia 50 is a beloved classic.

Designed by Bill Tripp, the Columbia 50 was sexy, fast and fun when it came off the line in 1965. Fiberglass boat building was still relatively new, but Tripp was ahead of the curve as he had been designing fiberglass boats since the late 50s. In 1966 the lean racer/cruiser won the legendary Newport to Ensenada race in California, which, at that time, was over 500 boats. The boat was built predominantly by Columbia Yachts in California and was the largest fiberglass production boat of its day.

Next time you see one of these elegant specimens heading out to sea, realize that they are more than a pretty face. The Columbia 50 is a pioneer design in that it was the first big sailboat that didn’t cost an absolute fortune to build. Much labor went into wooden boats of the day and the 50 opened the door for more affordable big boat sailing.

Today, the design still holds up – both structurally and aesthetically. Fifty-seven boats were built and many are still kicking around (check out the Columbia 50 Owners’ Network ), especially on the West Coast of the U.S. Since fiberglass boat building was new in the mid-sixties, boats of this time were usually overbuilt (by today’s standards) and therefore are pretty tough.

As for picking one up on the used market, they’re not a dime a dozen and they’re not really cheap ( Columbia 50s for sale ). The Columbia 50 seems to have achieved a classic car sort of status based on its good looks, solid build and limited quantity (unlike the more abundant Columbia 26, that looks similar but are more abundant and pretty inexpensive). Most Columbia 50 owners will tell you that this boat is an ageless beauty that performs just about like a modern boat. It’s happy racing locally or venturing out into the open ocean, but wherever it is you can bet she’s turning heads.

Columbia 50 - Torben Grael

Torben Grael is arguably one of the finest sailors in the world. This photo shows his Columbia 50 together with his Star boat. He is an accomplished sailor ( see Wikipedia ) winning several Olympic medals in the Star, and winning the Volvo around the world race in 2009. Great sailors like great boats!

should seriously consider re-naming it. One of it's owners had a at sea, and the other guys on the ham net thought it was a scam because of the name. Eventually, Jim convinced them to take it seriously, and the Coast Guard dropped the needed medications to the people.

50’s are solid ... I delivered a couple back in the 90’s and always thought they were one of the better production out there. Good making vessels and relatively dry to windward.
There was one in my old marina in and the owner (an older gent) could not get the to turn over. He asked another owner in the marina to have a look because he was expecting his grandkids and their spouses any minute tohead out for a day sail. Neither of the two of them could figure the problem so walked over to my boat and rapped on the . It was still dark out but I agreed to have a look. Walking back to the Columbia, I asked the owner when was the last time he ran the engine. He replied, “about a year!” So I asked him if he had a ball pean hammer which he produced. I believe it was a engine so I gave a couple of sharp taps to the top of the solenoid and asked him to try it. It kicked right over and we let it run for a few minutes with no problems. I suggested he get some fresh gas as one year is about the limit before it begins to degrade.
With old engines that are in place in a boat and not run for a while, they tend to get a buildup on connectors and should be thoroughly gone through and cleaned up.
I went back to as he and his headed to the .

available?

Is there a complete list of the aboard ?

Sail inventory ? Age/condition?

What known jobs need to be done ?

When was it last re rigged ?

Is the boat from 1979? Most info says last built in 1972 or possibly 1974. Seems like more likley 1969.

. Add fresh fuel. New Batts. Either reinstall shaft with ( nothing wrong with it) or upgrade to dripless like i was going to. She has a feathering prop. I installed new cutlass bearing before launch. She needs new halyards. Has very good . No . After 35 yrs of professionally working on boats i surveyed her myself. Sounded ....no at all. After 7 yrs we know hull is dry. Inspected all chain plates and standing . Found 1 questionable soft spot in deck. Its since been repaired. Found vessel to be significantly overbuilt and proof is her global mileage with no stresses in hull or decks. and is larger than normal. I am weak in my mechanical knoweledge so i rely on desiel doctors for that. Inspected post and quadrant etc. Engine 0 hrs. serviceable but I would use as backup if crossing an ocean. 1979.
is old! radio/telephone, aqua vane,

I will ask owner what else on equipment.

Currently residing in San Diego’s very desirable Kona Kai Resort/Marina ($1000.monthly) on Shelter Island.

This is a fabulous deal! Priced to sell!- asking less than our investment and less than half of her true value.

Equipment: Looking for a sailor/s, we are trying to give her a good home with this super low, no hassle, buy it now, low price.

With the money you save, You can upgrade as you like. However, this turn-key vessel is well equipped with everything you need to get out and enjoy a day on the water.

Let it be said- Boating is expensive. It’s one of the 3Fs, Because if it Floats, Flies, or Fornicates, it’s probably cheaper to rent it.

Yet Marriage remains popular, with good reason, as do airplanes and boats. There’s just something about having your very own. And there are some very fine older boats, airplanes and even people that come from a place of quality rarely found today.

This vessel is one such gem, at an approachable price. Don’t let opportunity pass you by.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Classic, well-known sailboat with beautiful lines, large flush deck and an open, comfortable interior with plenty of headroom. Lots of Potential Here!!! Don't Let This Spacious, Solid Sailing Vessel Pass You By!!! With the large flush deck, spacious interior, and bulletproof hull construction, this Columbia 50 is a real head-turner! She has been completely re-done and made to be more functional, easier to sail single-hand, and capable of sailing anywhere. Much of the hard work to restore this beautiful vessel has been done and she comes with everything necessary to complete the work that was started. The interior was stripped and completely rebuilt from the hull up. While the galley/dinette was never finished, it is still functional. Everything else has new bulkheads, which were done with West Systems epoxy. This boat is stronger and lighter than the original "drop-in" interior liner that she was built with. Also, the refit freed up more usable space providing a functional interior that makes all working systems onboard easy to access There is brand new wiring throughout the vessel - completely re-wired with all new components, switch panel, switches, bilge pumps, bus bars, etc There is also a new Victron Charge Controller and Bluetooth battery monitoring system The re-designed cockpit layout (winches, rope clutches, traveler, etc, now allows for single-handed sailing. Has a Yanmar 4JH2-UTE 100hp Inboard Diesel in excellent condition with approx. 2000 hours -- Keel stepped mast was re-fit 2 years ago. == New wiring, tangs, sheaves, lights, antenna, Harken mainsail track, and paint. -- Standing rigging was replaced 4 Years ago, mostly Haynes Hi-Mod compression fitting. -- All chainplates were replaced 2 years ago before stepping the mast, They are titanium chainplates from Colligo Marine The running rigging is mostly synthetic lines (Dyneema core w/nylon cover), about 2 years old, and in very good condition. She needs a secondary Jib/spinnaker Halyard run through the mast. 2x Barient 32 Winches, 3x Barient 28, Barient 24, 2x Barient 10 are all in good shape. The larger cockpit winches can be converted to self-tailing Included in the sale is a Simrad Multi-function display as well as Simrad Autopilot system that has not yet been installed. There is also a new Maxwell RC10 Windlass which is ready to be installed In addition, she comes with a Harken Mark IV Furling system and all necessary components and sail to install a staysail rig. Many additional miscellaneous new parts, spare engine parts, cleats and deck hardware, blocks, lines, materials, etc. will also be provided to a new owner. However, these will not be inventoried. The owner is only selling because they purchased a new vessel. Priced to sell - over $20k below current value - because there are still some ongoing projects. This very generous asking price is in hopes that a motivated and enthusiastic new buyer will take these over and finish the restoration. She will make an INCREDIBLE liveaboard, inter-island cruiser or South Pacific voyager! We are looking for people all over the country who share our love for boats.
