Guide to Hawaii

Say Aloha to the paradise islands of Hawaii

Just by breathing the words, Hawaii evokes images of heavenly beaches, endless sunny days and copious palm trees, whilst the reality boasting all of this and more. Far removed from any continent by 2,000 miles, the Hawaiian Islands are an idyllic destination for yacht charters and are becoming increasingly popular for those seeking a holiday of a lifetime.

Laced like jewels in the Pacific Ocean , Hawaii boasts eight main emerald islands, each one as ruggedly beautiful as the next. Although an idyllic location for a secluded yacht charter, Hawaii is located in the centre of the Pacific meaning venturing to the islands is not for anyone unsteady on their sea legs. The ocean waters can be subjected to swells so a sturdy vessel such as a catamaran is ideal for a Hawaiian yacht charter. With a warm climate all year round and warm people to match, Hawaii promises one heavenly day to the next. Although one of the youngest American states, Hawaii has a preceding reputation of sun, sea and sand which exceeds expectation upon arrival.

With a variety of glorious islands to explore, a yacht charter provides the perfect opportunity to hop from one to the next, discovering some of Hawaii’s untold secrets along the way. From Kauai to the “Big Island” of Hawaii, there is a plethora of sights to see and memories to be made. Nicknamed as the “Garden Isle”, Kauai boasts tropical rainforests, towering cliffs and sugar white sandy beaches. To the west side of the island, the Waimea Canyon is an unmissable sight. Often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, this breathtaking geological wonder offers stunning panoramic views with copious trails to trek whether you’re a novice or experienced hiker. The bustling streets of Oahu are great for shopping and dining ashore whilst the volcanic landmark, Diamond Head, is a remarkable scene. Revel in the historical impact of Pearl Harbour before venturing to Molokai. Deemed as the most traditional Hawaiian Island in the isolated archipelago and often referred to as “the Friendly Island”, Molokai is renowned for being laid back and relaxed, combining the opportunity to do as much or as little as you please. From water sports, whale watching and sport fishing to reading a book under a palm tree, the choice is all yours. The island of Lanai is untouched and tranquil with miles of sun kissed shoreline for that ‘get away from it all’ feel whereas sightseeing at Keahiakawlo is a one of a kind experience. Renowned as the “Garden of the Gods”, this location transforms into an enchanting sight at dusk as the setting sun casts a warm orange glow on the rocks, illuminating this fascinating rock garden in brilliant shades of red and purple.

Meander from one isle to another, sightseeing, sun bathing and sampling cuisine. Maui offers heavenly beaches, tumbling waterfalls and quaint small towns. Keep an eye out for the humpback whales that migrate here every year and don’t leave until you have experienced the awe-inspiring volcanoes at Haleakala National Park. Last but certainly not least, no charter to Hawaii would be complete without a final stop off at the “Big Island”, aptly named Hawaii Island. By day, gaze in admiration at Kilauea within Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park, witness the tallest sea mountain, Mauna Kea and sip on the famous Kona coffee before paying a well-earned visit to Hapuna beach, often deemed as one of the best beaches in the world.  As the sun sets, watch out for the glittering stars which dazzle like a diamond chandelier in the clear night sky.

Hawaii encompasses vast expressions of nature, lush vegetation and divine landmarks, which come together to complete this natural wonderland. With so much to explore, admire and adore, Hawaii exceeds every expectation.

Yacht Charter in Hawaii

Hawaii yacht charter.

The islands of Hawaii seem to have been made for the gods. With amazing beaches, a climate of endless sunny days, and miles and miles of coastlines, Hawaii is simply a paradise destination. With eight main islands, there are plenty to choose from for an unforgettable yacht charter experience. Located on the centre of the Pacific, the waters of Hawaii are simply perfect for multiple days of island-hopping adventures, or full-day trips on one of the islands. For a more immersive experience, a multi-island yacht charter is a definite must in Hawaii.

Why charter a yacht in Hawaii?

If you want to experience the real gist of Hawaii, spending a vacation on one island is not enough. A yacht charter can bring you to the archipelago's best spots, the most amazing natural beauty, and a world of water adventures that can only be experienced with a boat. Your captain can bring you to many of these islands' secret spots, as you enjoy the spoils of the natural wonders that abound. From swimming to snorkelling, windsurfing, to fishing, to diving, Hawaii's waters are genuinely one of the best places on earth for the ultimate yacht charter holiday.

What are yacht charter prices in Hawaii?

A catamaran is the ideal type of yacht in Hawaiian waters because the ocean waters are subject to swells. A catamaran offers stability in such conditions. Nevertheless, motor yachts are still as great on the seas of Hawaii. A typical 71-foot motor yacht can cost about $60,000 for a week's rent in Hawaii. This kind of boat can accommodate a group of 6 people with three cabins on board. A catamaran is perfect for a day tour in any of the Hawaiian islands. A 48-foot catamaran can cost around $3,000 for a full day yacht charter. And lastly, a sailing catamaran with a length of 46 feet can cost around $2,500 for a full day's charter.

When is the yachting season in Hawaii?

The months of May to October are perfect for yacht charters in Hawaii. Having a subtropical climate, the summer months have the best weather and the lowest humidity. The months of November, December, and January is the rainy season in Hawaii, but also the ideal months for surf charters. These are the months that the waves are pumping, and much favoured by professional surfers.

Hawaii yacht charter for a day

A day yacht charter in Hawaii can be a great way to spend time on ocean waters and away from the cosmopolitan vibe of Honolulu. A charter around Maunalua Bay presents you with opportunities to visit and witness and the scenery of Koko Head, Diamond Head, and the Hanauma Bay Ridge. A day charter can include swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, surfing, or simply lounging on the boat as you cruise along the volcanic islands.

Hawaii yacht charter overnight

The West Coast of Oahu offers the best coast for an overnight yacht charter in Hawaii. It presents you a chance to escape the city life for a relaxing cruise along the beach, and of course, visiting coastal towns and enjoying a plethora of water sports activities on the bays. Head to Pokai Bay and enjoy swimming and snorkelling before you spend the night on this safe anchorage. In the morning, have breakfast on the waters of Yokohama Bay, where you can enjoy the secluded and tranquil beach for the rest of your morning. You can also visit Haleiwa town before making your way back to Honolulu. This historic town is the perfect example of old Hawaii mixed with the new Hawaiian atmosphere.

Hawaii yacht charter for a week

A week-long yacht charter in Hawaii can offer you a multi-island liveaboard where you can discover some of the archipelago’s most beautiful spots. Visit the islands of Molokai, Maui, and Lanai from your base in Oahu.

Day 1-2: Oahu

Spend your first two days cruising along the coasts of Oahu. The West end is perfect for snorkelling, possible encounters with dolphins, and cruising along Kaneohe Bay. You can also head to Waikiki Beach, which is the most popular in Oahu, and one of the top beaches in the world. Spend your day here shopping at the waterfront, dining on the seaside restaurants, sunbathing and swimming on the beach, and thoroughly enjoying the quintessential Hawaiian beach.

Days 3-4: Molokai

Visit Kaunakakai, which is the only town in Molokai and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of this beautiful island. Head to the Kalaupapa Peninsula, the Papohaku Beach, and the North Shore, which has the highest sea cliffs in the world, with peaks rising out of the water up to 3,000 feet. A sight to behold, cruising along this coast is a must in your Molokai yacht charter itinerary.

Days 5- 6: Lanai

The island of Lanai offers a tranquil yacht charter experience. Head to Hulopoe Bay Marine Sanctuary Beach and enjoy a day of swimming and snorkelling and BBQ on the beach. Visit the famed Garden of the Gods, as well as the remote Shipwreck Bay. Rent a 4x4 and explore the island’s beautiful scenery or hike through the trails and revel in the magnificent views rewarded to you once you reach the peak.

Day 7-8: Maui

Maui is one of Hawaii's most popular destinations. Visit Lahaina, which is a historic whaling village known for its shopping, art galleries, and restaurants. Head over to Honolua Bay before the sun sets and spend your night here, which is a great anchorage on the northwest coast. On your last day, you can either disembark in Maui, head to the island of Hawaii or make your way back to Oahu.

Wedding yacht charter in Hawaii

Hawaii is an idyllic island paradise, and there's nothing more romantic than spending your wedding and honeymoon here all at the same time. While Hawaii is famous as a tourist destination, a wedding yacht charter can provide you with privacy and exclusivity that can't be met at a 5-star resort. On a yacht charter, you and your guests can have the boat all to yourself as you cruise along the waters of Waikiki beach and experience the beauty of Honolulu's starry skyline at night. Or, if you want an intimate wedding with just the two of you, your boat captain can officiate the wedding with the crew as your witnesses, then have a romantic dinner for two on deck as the sun sets, then cruise your way to your honeymoon destination right after.

Surfing yacht charter in Hawaii

During the months of November to January, surfers flock to Hawaii for the excellent surf and swells. Surfing charters bring guests to the best spots in Hawaii, as well as secret surf spots that only locals know. However, for beginners, or for those who want to surf for the first time, plenty of spots are found across the islands. Some of these spots are in Waikiki, in Oahu; Lemon Drop, Kiahuna Plantation, and PK's in Kauai, and Hanalei Bay. On Hawaii island, the coast of Kona is ideal for beginner surfers. A surfing charter can include a qualified and licensed surf instructor on board, where you can hop from one surf spot to another, and learn the sport without sacrificing comfort and luxury.

Hawaii is the ultimate yacht charter definition with a multitude of itineraries to experience. With so many islands and natural beauty to explore, a yacht charter in Hawaii is simply the ideal way to visit the stunning volcanic islands in the middle of the Pacific.

An unforgettable experience.

The Via Mia is a fully restored antique yacht located in Honolulu, Hawaii. The worldly 61-foot wooden yacht was constructed in 1929 in Stockton, California. Built for luxury, she traveled the world before crossing the ocean to Hawai‘i where she currently resides in beautiful Waikiki.

If her teak could speak, Vida Mia would not only tell stories about movie stars and politicians who enjoyed her lap of luxury basking in the sunsets off Waikiki, but of the countless grand times of families and friends who created lifetime memories aboard this gorgeous, iconic vessel.

The Vida Mia has been on the silver screen starring in movies dating all the way back to the 50's.

Nearly everyone you meet on the island has a story of an event or adventure on the Vida Mia.

She had made Hawaii home for over 60 years.

The Vida Mia is an exclusive experience that our guests remember for years.

Nothing pleases us more than sharing the Vida Mia with new friends.

Over the years, we have built a community of visitors, travelers, and local residents.

The Vida Mia works exclusively with local artists, vendors, and craftsmen. From musicians to our local coffee farmers and fisherman, we strive to build a community around the boat.  All of the food served on the boat is sourced locally.

The Vida Mia served her country during World War II. She arrived in Hawai‘i after serving as an unofficial escort of the famed Transpacific sailing race in 1963, although it’s said perhaps the Transpacific racing fleet was really escorting her.

There is only one Vida Mia.

Our experienced maritime staff has traveled the world restoring and preserving old sailing vessels and has extensive experience with classic yachts and wooden boats.

We take great pride as stewards of this historic vessel.  Our staff is hands-on and personable. We have a loyal customer base here in Hawaii.

Vida Mia has been a beloved part of the Hawaii island harbor community for many years.

Come experience the Vida Mia. There is no other boat like her.

When you book Vida Mia know you are supporting many other small businesses here in our community.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

We are conveniently located near all the major hotels in Honolulu. We share the harbor with the nearby Prince Waikiki , Ilikai Hotel , and the Hilton Hawaiian Village . If you are staying at the Royal Hawaiian , Outrigger Waikiki, or Sheraton Waikiki we are a short 10-15 minute walk along the beach. Many of our hotel guests take a morning stroll over to the harbor or rent a Biki bike at one of their kiosks. There is a nice bike path along the beach; you can catch it right at the end of Lewers Street or take the scenic route and cut through the path at the Hale Koa Hotel .

For guests staying on other parts of the island, we offer transportation recommendations.

There is ample parking near the vessel. Parking in the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor is convenient and affordable.

We recommend shared rides or taxi service for cruises that depart on Friday evenings.

Captain Polu made our experience so great! We were late and he was very accommodating as we rushed to get there. Yacht was beautiful and spacious for our group. Overall we had the best time and 3 hours sailing was the perfect amount! HIGHLY recommend!

We appreciate Steven very much. We asked for a last minute tour and he made it happen, while being so much fun ! My group had nothing but great things to say. We were given some intel on history of the island, the opportunity to swim/snorkel, and then proceeded with some lunch and snack that were provided. Definitely recommend !

Highly recommend Captain Polu! We chartered his boat for a group of 6 and it was SO much better than our previous experiences on the larger more commercial “Mai Tai/Booze Cruise” type ones which are crowded and stressful. His boat is great and we had a great few hours on the water. Thanks Polu!

Our family took a trip with Joey and everyone had so much fun. Joey and the crew were extremely friendly and made us feel welcome. We enjoyed jumping off the boat, cruising around and watching the sunset. Would definitely recommend!

A great afternoon/evening. Staff were attentive and helpful. I am terrified of deep water, but Terry was great and I was confidently snorkeling, watching turtles and reef fish with no fear. Angelica also was by my side as I wasnt the strongest of swimmers. Much appreciated. Thank you .

My group and I had the best time. Capt Ty and first mate Kyleigh were excellent. Both are very knowledgeable about the boat/water/island and very accommodating. They did a great job at planning and making sure everyone got what they wanted from the experience (snorkeling, swimming and time out sailing). Would book again in the future!

How much does it cost to rent a yacht in Hawaii?

You can charter a boat in Hawaii for a day, for an average of $1100. The average price for a weekly Maui boat rental is $3500. Your total budget for a boating trip in Hawaii depends on many factors such as: trip duration, if captain and crew are included in the price or their cost have to be paid separately, fuel cost (which could be significantly higher on a motorboat compared to a sailboat) and other extras you choose to customize your experience in Hawaii.

What is Sailo’s cancellation policy?

As long as the booking request hasn't been accepted by the Maui boat charter owner, the renter can cancel the request without any charge. If the renter cancels after the booking request has been accepted, the booking will be subject to the terms of the cancellation policy in place for each boat. The renter should check the cancellation policy with the boat owner, as some of the professional operators have specific cancellation policies which supersede that of Sailo. Whenever a boat owner doesn't have a specific cancellation policy, Sailo's Standard Cancellation policy will apply.

Tips for responsible boating

If you’re looking to explore our beautiful planet, a yacht charter in Hawaii is a great place to start. Explore coral reefs with your snorkel, discover hidden bays and islands and generally enjoy the view of nature. Remember, that sailing motto: 'Take only photos, leave only wake' (OK, so we paraphrased). To be a responsible sailor, remember:

  • Don’t disturb coral or sealife
  • Take your trash home (and don’t throw anything in the sea)
  • Respect the locals and their customs wherever you go

Kelsey Walling/Tribune-Herald NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer is docked Monday at the Port of Hilo.

A vessel dedicated to exploring the unknown parts of the ocean is docked this week at the Port of Hilo for the first time as the crew and scientists prepare for the next part of their expedition.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ocean Expedition has docked the Okeanos Explorer in Hilo while conducting two expeditions to map the deep, unexplored ocean around the Johnston Atoll Unit of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.

ADVERTISING

The expeditions are part of a collaborative science and research campaign, “Beyond the Blue: Illuminating the Pacific,” which is aimed at raising the knowledge and understanding of the deep waters in the Pacific Islands region through coastal and ocean mapping.

The 224-foot ship is completing six missions to explore the unknown deepwater of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument and the Johnston Atoll Unit. Depths of these areas range from 250 meters to 6,000 meters.

“The real purpose of these expeditions is to gather the baseline information to understand what we don’t know,” NOAA Ocean Exploration Director Jeremy Weirich told reporters visiting the ship on Monday. “If we can provide any geographical, biological, and even archaeological information that is fundamental to research, then other researchers can decide to come back to a spot and look further.”

Along with its sonar capabilities, the Okeanos Explorer is also equipped with remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, which are capable of diving to depths of 6,000 meters while taking high-definition footage of the seafloor.

Since the NOAA ship is being used solely for mapping expeditions this year, the ROVs are not on board and are being serviced in the ship’s home port in Rhode Island.

“The name Okeanos is Greek for ‘the river that circles the world,’ which is appropriate,” said Trish Albano, Ocean Exploration expedition coordinator. “The ship has a special mission that takes us to these amazing and far away places. It’s always on the move.”

During the expeditions to the Johnston Atoll Unit, the research team and crew will conduct 24-hour-a-day exploratory mapping operations using the ship’s mapping systems.

During the second mapping mission to Papahanaumokuakea this year, NOAA Ocean Exploration was able to map a seamount on the northwestern side and found that it stood 3,000 meters above the seafloor.

“This was completely unmapped before, and now we know what to expect from that area. Maybe one day we can come back with the ROV to see a small portion of the seamount and probably end up with even more questions,” Albano said.

Unlike most NOAA ocean expeditions, a majority of scientists remain on shore and can communicate with the Okeanos Explorer through “telepresence” technology, which transmits data and video feeds to scientists who can then add their expertise no matter where the ship is located.

The technology also enables the public to view ongoing expeditions in real time. Anyone with internet connection can see what the Okeanos Explorer crew is seeing live.

“Our scientists are narrating what they see to the public watching live, and we can also set up video calls for school groups who can see what we’re doing in real time,” Albano said. “The technology for outreach and education is so important when it comes to doing this research and is one of the main reasons for doing it in the first place.”

The NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries has been involved in the “Beyond the Blue” project as more knowledge from the mapping expeditions helps provide data needed for managing marine protected areas.

“Specific to this region, a lot of what is done through mapping helps us understand what is there and helps us with the management of these special and sacred areas,” said Jenny Crawford, communications coordinator for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries Pacific Islands Region. “It gives us a reason to protect these places. The deepwater is less known, but just as important.”

NOAA is currently working with the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Interior, the state of Hawaii and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs on a proposal to designate the Papahanaumokuakea Monument as a sanctuary, which would strengthen protections for the ecosystems, wildlife and cultural resources of the area.

While in the Pacific Ocean, the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer usually docks at Oahu’s Ford Island between expeditions. However, Weirich planned to dock in Hilo for the first time to reach a different community.

“I have always loved Hilo, so with our current location, dates and timing, I wanted to see if it was possible to dock here for a week,” Weirich said. “Luckily, it worked out, and now we can share the work we’re doing with a new community and a community invested in Papahanaumokuakea.”

Ocean Exploration is partnering with the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and Mokupapapa Discovery Center to put on public and private activities throughout the week in Hilo.

“Pilina Kai Lipo: Connecting to the Deep Ocean” is a two-day event designed to engage the local community about the deep ocean from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Wednesday.

The event is free and will highlight the efforts being made to further the understanding of the Papahanaumokuakea region.

Albano and Weirich also will be giving tours to school groups to help foster the next generation of marine stewards and educate the community about deep sea exploration.

Fall overboard from sail training vessel Pelican of London with loss of 1 life

Location: Sharpness, England.

Accident Investigation Report 10/2024

Read our marine accident investigation report, which includes what happened, subsequent actions taken and recommendations:

MAIB investigation report 10-2024: Pelican of London

Pelican of London

At 2308 on 2 October 2023, the volunteer relief cook on Pelican of London fell from the top of the vessel’s gangway into the flooded drydock while under the influence of alcohol. His absence was not noted until the next morning and a search was started. In the early afternoon of 3 October 2023, police divers recovered the relief cook’s body to the dockside where he was declared deceased.

Safety issues

the gangway did not provide a safe means of access to Pelican of London

on board training and risk assessments did not mitigate the risk of a fall from the gangway

the relief cook was above the legal limit for duty on board Pelican of London and the drug and alcohol policy did not specify parameters for crew returning on board from recreational time ashore

Recommendations

The vessel owners, Seas Your Future, were recommended (2024/130, 2024/131 and 2024/132) to review and amend: its policy and training for the rigging and approval of the gangway when used; the risk assessment procedure; and the fleet policy and procedure for dealing with drugs and/or alcohol.

Related publications

A safety flyer to the shipping industry was produced with this report, signposting guidance on how to safely rig a gangway.

Star Wars Outlaws: 10 Best Charms

Star wars outlaws: how to open the hutt vault in mos eisley, star wars outlaws: where to find every sabacc high roller, quick links, tak'tak tandishek, nizuma chith, tretet zadiket, pinota pakinota.

More than any other planet in Star Wars Outlaws , Tatooine is stuffed to the brim with references to classic Star Wars. That includes the diminutive, hooded Jawas, the very first alien species to appear onscreen in a Star Wars film.

Learn all about the best charms in Star Wars Outlaws!

Once you've secured the help of the Jawas in upgrading the Trailblazer and gained the expertise of the Hotfixer, you can learn the Jawaese art of negotiation, M'Gasha. This skill will get you a discount at merchants for the rest of the game, but to unlock it you'll need to find five hidden Jawas throughout Tatooine.

M'Gasha reduces the buy cost and increases the sell price of all goods by ten percent.

Entip trades parts and salvage at the Jawa Sandcrawler on the southern edge of the Tatooine map - the same one that you visit for the Hotfixer quest. If you didn't talk to them the first time, don't worry - the Sandcrawler is a Fast Travel Point, so you can easily return and visit Entip without having to take a long trip across the desert.

Mos Eisley Ship Workshop

If you've completed The Hotfixer quest, chances are you've already met Tak'Tak... or walked right by them without even noticing. Tak'Tak trades parts in the ship workshop of Mos Eisley - the same place that directs you to seek the Jawas for a turret upgrade. If you don't have the components you need for an upgrade at the main desk, Tak'Tak might have what you need.

If you missed the Jawa on your first visit, you can easily return via fast travel, since the shop is just east of Docking Bay 94.

The Hutts don't need this stuff, right?

Outside Chalmun's Cantina

The most infamous cantina in the galaxy is on the east side of Mos Eisley, and Nizuma Chith has a merchant stall set up just outside. Several quests involve visiting Chalmun's Cantina, and there's a Broker there for you to pick up easy jobs, so if you haven't met Nizuma yet you can always stop by the next time you're in the area.

You don't actually have to buy anything from any of the Jawa Traders for them to count toward unlocking M'Gasha - you just need to talk to them.

South Jundland Wastes

From the Sandcrawer, follow the main road east along the south edge of the map. Keep an eye out on your left for a small Jawa camp up a hill, just before the Jundland Wastes opens up into the Great Chott Salt Flat. You'll find Tretet Zadiket here.

This camp is also the starting point for finding one of Jet Kordo's vaults on Tatooine , so it's a good idea to start the Holotracker quest by finding the first vault on Toshara before visiting Tretet.

Hidden Sandfall

Pinota is the hardest Jawa to find , residing at the top of a dangerous cliff. Midway between Garrick Ranch and the Imperial Terminal , look for a steep ramp to the south. Use the Speeder's boost to jump it and find a hidden area. When you arrive at the sandfall, keep to the left.

Climb up the cliff walls, doubling back so that you end up above the area that you came from . You'll probably have to fight a pack of massifs or two along the way, so have your blaster ready and make sure your bacta vials are topped up before attempting the climb.

Pinota waits at the top of the cliff, but don't stop exploring once you've done your shopping - there are plenty of hidden treasures in this canyon to seek out!

Defeating the galaxy's best Sabacc players will get you bragging rights and cosmetics.
