Edmiston sells 75m ‘Enigma’ in 10 months

The famous blohm+voss build has sold for its initial listing price of €47.5 million.….

Image for article Edmiston sells 75m ‘Enigma’ in 10 months

“You know a yacht is iconic when a world-class shipyard still uses it as their main advertisement some 25 years after they built her,” said Nick Edmiston, of the eponymous firm, in an exclusive conversation with SuperyachtNews , when he listed Enigma  for sale in August 2016. “That speaks volumes for the quality and the pride the builders took in this particular commission.”

On 13 June, Edmiston & Company announced that it had sold Enigma, a Blohm+Voss build, for her initial listing price of €47.5 million, after just 10 months on the market – and 12 years since the firm sold the boat for the first time.

She was sold to a European buyer, who will rename the boat Zeus and become the fourth owner since she was delivered to her first owner, Emilion Azcarraga, a Mexican businessman, in 1991. She was then sold to Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle Corporation, in 1999 before he took delivery of 138m Rising Sun in 2007 and sold her to Aidan Barclay, owner of the Telegraph newspaper.

The panoramic convex windows set into Engima’s GRP superstructure are one of the most recognisable superyacht features of all time, but the yacht was not well received when she first hit the water. In fact, the designer, Martin Francis, told The Superyacht Report that he didn’t receive another enquiry for eight years after her completion.

The radical design, he said, was “too far ahead of the curve” – something he believes should be considered more carefully by today’s designers who are taking the plunge with ambitious projects.

Based on the speed of the sale and prestige of the boat, could Enigma have sold for more? “Well, she could have gone for less,” Edmiston quipped. “You just need to find what one person is prepared to pay and another is prepared to accept – and it’s up to me to marry the two together.

“But this particular boat is ageless," he continued. “I mean, it’s over 25-years-old and look at the condition it’s in. Age doesn’t matter when a boat has been run to a standard this high and that’s reflected by the value she’s maintained.” He compared it to "Georgian houses built in the 17th century that have sold for top dollar.”

Discussing the 60m+ sector specifically, Edmiston said he is noticing a lot more interest from potential buyers of late. “There is more confidence in France now under Macron, as opposed to his predecessor – and although what happened in England last week is very unfortunate, it won’t stop people coming from the Mediterranean,” Edmiston concluded.

Lord Alan Sugar lists his motor yacht Lady A for sale

55m Bannenberg superyacht Lady A sold

The 55.2-metre Nishii Zosen-Sterling motor yacht Lady A has been sold, one year after joining the market, with Simon Goldsworthy at Edmiston representing both seller and buyer.

Lady A was built by Japanese shipyard Nishii Zosen-Sterling in 1986 and flaunts a distinctive design by the legendary Jon Bannenberg . Formerly known as Southern Cross III, she was owned by Australian billionaire Alan Bond before being purchased by British business magnate and TV personality Sir Alan Sugar.

The 879GT vessel was almost entirely rebuilt in 2017 by her "selling" owner with work valued at more than €12 million. This included a comprehensive interior overhaul, an extension of the upper deck and the installation of new Quantum zero-speed stabilisers.

The extended upper aft deck is the main sun lounging space on board with sofas that hug the bulwarks, loose coffee tables and armchairs, and a large al fresco dining area seating up to 14 guests. Awnings can be set up by the crew for those seeking shade.

Unusually, the main interior lounge is also found on this level, accessed through sliding glass doors and complete with a raised reading nook and sit-up bar accompanying a central seating area. The space was reconfigured during the refit to accommodate the owner’s wish to create a less formal atmosphere on board. An alternative social space takes the form of a split-level observation lounge with wraparound windows offering 180-degree panoramas.

This unconventional layout allows for a large main deck conference room that doubles as a formal dining area. Crew quarters, sleeping 10, can also be found on this level, while a central staircase links all three interior decks. There are quarters for up to 15 crew members.

Up top is a split-level sundeck with a sit-up bar, spa pool and a large moon-shaped sunpad, with fixed sun umbrellas providing shade to each area.

Lady A is ABS classed and can sleep up to 12 guests in six cabins. A full-beam owner’s cabin occupies a large space amidships on the lower deck and comes with a private office. Three double guest cabins are also located on the lower deck, with the VIP guest cabin and a twin guest cabin situated on the main deck. The interior refit was completed by Design Unlimited and is finished with walnut cabinetry, solid timber floors and largely neutral tones with mauve accents.

Her two 3516B Caterpillar diesel engines were rebuilt during maintenance works in January 2021, with further upgrades in 2023 including an interior refresh. She has a cruising speed of 13 knots.

Lying in Italy, Lady A was last asking €7,900,000 with VAT paid.

Project Secret Hits the Yacht Market with Edmiston

Project Secret has the added draw of already being in construction phase with delivery scheduled for 2025.

By Kim Ayling and James Roberts

edmiston project secret Superyacht

Leading yacht brokerage firm Edmiston has announced a tempting new opportunity for those searching for a new superyacht.  Project Secret , currently under construction at Tankoa Yachts in Genoa, promises to be the shipyard ’s “marquee superyacht,” with many opportunities for personalization.

A star-studded cast of designers, including yacht design by Philippe Briand for Vitruvius and interiors by FM Architettura, ensures that every square inch of space on the custom-designed vessel is both elegant and efficient, with onboard capacity for 12 along with a crew of nine.

Fully tapping into the unique experience that is ocean travel, family-run consultancy Willem Van Cappellen was also brought on board to handle  Project Secret’s  acoustics and was tasked with accentuating the sound of the sea onboard.

Measuring in at 169 ft with a price tag of €38.5m (approx. $41.7m), the yacht has the added draw of already being in the construction phase with delivery scheduled for 2025. This presents a unique chance to take advantage of a significantly reduced lead time along with unusual scope for personalization.

“There are ample opportunities to bring a personal touch to the build in the latter phases,” said Briand. “The interior architecture has been planned around loose furniture, so the owner will have the opportunity to select their own furnishings.”

Project Secret’s  original brief specified a want to create a ‘floating beach house.’ “To meet [this] brief, there were various considerations we took into account,” said Briand. “Firstly, we wanted to avoid a traditional salon layout, instead creating a space that would offer an elegant yet relaxed feel.

“We also considered how we could maximize the potential of the yacht’s indoor and outdoor environments, leaving no dead space. Finally, we wanted to capture the light that is found in a beach house, and ensure that the interiors benefit from more natural light than you would usually find on a superyacht of this size.”

Versatility was a focus throughout the design, with a foredeck that accommodates multiple occasions, as well as a sun pad with a whirlpool and outdoor entertaining area. Elsewhere, a gym and wellness area, complete with a sauna and seaside dipping pool, promote well-being at sea.

Accommodations are spread across six cabins, including a full-beam master suite with a push-button sea terrace. “For me, the owner’s stateroom is very interesting,” says Briand. “Located on the main deck, it offers impressive space both inside and out. Its own private terrace ensures incredible ocean views.

In line with Tankoa Yachts’ bid to promote a more sustainable approach to shipbuilding and yachting, the vessel has been fitted with a hybrid parallel propulsion system.

“This is an exceptional yacht that perfectly encapsulates the clear vision of its owner,” added Edmiston broker, Andrew Bond. “When Project Secret sets sail, [she] will easily earn [her] place as the marquee superyacht from this renowned Italian shipyard and clearly sets standards for energy and design efficiencies.”

“It is going to be an incredible platform when she is completed. Her new owners will be saving significant time and taking on a world-class designed yacht.”

Yaroslavl: A UNESCO protectorate and the Volga’s most ancient town

The artists who painted the monumental landscapes were the first in the history of Russia to sign their work setting an example for future generations of talented Russian artists. Here you can see numerous ancient Russian icons and the very first printed edition of "The Song of Igor's Campaign," Russia’s most famous literary achievement of the Middle Ages.

A 27-year-old bear, Masha, lives on the premises in a special enclosure with its own bath and amusements. She represents the symbol on Yaroslavl’s coat of arms of a brown bear characteristic of Russia. Masha has a temper and is not what one would call an easy-going bear: 10 years ago she bit off the foot of one of her keepers.

UNESCO encourages tourists to take a closer look at this church. Its exterior is a fantastic silhouette of a huge Orthodox Church with 15 domes. The interior is peerless in the world of art with tiles, patterns and paintings depicting an encyclopedia of Biblical scenes. Practically the entire population of the city and the surrounding area participated either financially or physically in its construction in the 17th century.

16th century: « Ivan Vasilievich » This club and restaurant features delicious Russian food and bright design in tribute to one of the Soviet Union’s most famous comedies, "Ivan Vasilievich: Back to the Future." The interior is recreated to humorously resemble apartments of the 1970s and chambers of the era of Ivan the Terrible. Its price, when compared to Moscow restaurants, is a nice surprise.

The pride of the museum is its rich collection of examples from the Yaroslavl school of icon painting. Other notable exhibits include provincial portraits, works from the Parisian period of famous Russian artist Konstantin Korovin and canvases by Russia’s avant-garde. The museum annually hosts many events, lectures and exhibitions. Five years ago during a renovation, an arc from a secret underground passage from the Governor's house to the grotto under the observation deck of the Volga embankment was found. Twenty years ago the museum was given an award recognizing it as being the best provincial museum in Russia.

Music and Time museum This museum is very popular among foreign travelers to Russia. Here one can find the largest public display of antiques anywhere in the country. The collection includes vinyl records and gramophones, bells and chimes, irons and samovars, music boxes and phonographs. A private museum, Music and Time was founded 22 years ago by the collector, actor and magician John Mostoslavsky. If you’re lucky he will personally guide your tour, which turns the exhibits into a real show.

Yaroslavl’s most famous modern artist and a member of the Presidential Council for Culture, Nikolai Mukhin, and his colleague Treivus have created something stunning - a stone-carved portrait of Trinity angels that visit Abraham and his wife. It is a scene from the Old Testament. The sculpture is a bold attempt to interpret the great sculptural icon by medieval icon painter Andrei Rublev that bears the same name. It is Russia's only sculpture of the Holy Trinity. It is impossible to gauge how people would have reacted to such a violation of the religious canons in the past. However, the sculpture was consecrated by the former Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Aleksiy II.

Today the monument is considered one of Yaroslavl’s top five attractions. The sculpture was installed 20 years ago and shortly thereafter became a traditional place for newlyweds to make a wish and throw a coin into a cup.

lord edmiston yacht

Today this is a popular meeting spot for couples, to take wedding photos and to even propose marriage itself. Recently the city authorities banned the fastening of locks here, a popular ritual on wedding days, because they impede the surrounding views of the late classicist architecture. As an alternative, newlyweds have started planting "trees of love." But the place is still symbolic and lovers come here to kiss and spin around on the grass in anticipation of a happy future together. The gazebo of love is one of the best places in Yaroslavl to view the Volga.
