Tech Mogul Michael Saylor, Owner of Entourage Party Yacht, Starts Fractional Superyacht Ownership Program

Back in January we reported that the cast of the upcoming Entourage movie was filming some wild party scenes with topless models in Miami aboard the impressive $30 million  Usher superyacht. Now the vessel’s owner, tech billionaire Michael Saylor, is using the luxury yacht as the crown jewel in a new company called Fleet Miami that he’s positioning as, according to a post on his Facebook timeline as reported by  Pursuitist , “NetJets for yachts, albeit more exclusive and less ambitious." Saylor intends to sell memberships starting at $250,000 per year, which will give cardholders access to the 154-foot  Usher, as well as Saylor’s other yachts — including the 147-foot Feadship Harle , the 87-foot Warren Yacht Moksha , and the 36-foot cruiser Julia .

“Michael Saylor saw a big need to simplify not only the ownership of yachts but also the need to streamline the charter process,” Captain Glen Allen, fleet captain of Fleet Miami, tells The Superyacht Owner . “Mr. Saylor hates inefficiency. He looked at how when we added a second and then third yacht to his stable, the crew became much more efficient. He saw that with multiple yachts we could utilise the crew much more efficiently. But then the inventory of available days of use grew and he was not able to fill those days — he felt we needed a system to take advantage of that.”

Can’t afford a full membership? Saylor is also selling seven-day charters through the Florida Keys for $70,000 to $280,000, depending on which yacht you choose. Usher , which had been available for charter at $225,000 per week, is a high performance motor yacht built by the renowned Delta Marine shipyard in 2007. It features one of the most distinctive interiors of any vessel, with a tropical-themed design scheme that includes custom glasswork, bamboo, leather and rich exotic woods (like Wenge, Bubinga and Koa). Perfect for partying, it features a hot tub, wet bar and two onboard margarita machines. Saylor, once the richest person in Washington, D.C., lost an estimated six billion in a single day during the tech bubble in 2000, but has since recovered a fair amount of his fortune.

The yacht from the Entourage movie is in Miami

Usher is at the Epic Marina

An aerial of a superyacht

Usher, a sleek 154-square-foot superyacht that was featured during a party scene in the Entourage movie, is currently docked at the Epic Marina in downtown Miami.

The vessel sleeps 12 and features Polynesian interior styling, a sundeck jacuzzi and wet bar, underwater camera on the stern, a fishing cockpit and a beach platform with a hydraulically-operated swim ladder.

The $30 million yacht is owned by tech mogul Michael Saylor and is available for charter for $200,000 a week.

Miami Yacht Show

YOU CAN SEE THIS 154-FOOT, LOCALLY OWNED SHIP AT MIAMI YACHT SHOW. IT HELPS THE ECONOMY.

  • Florida   Boat Show

Local tech executive Michael Saylor’s 154-foot luxury motor yacht is called USHER.

No, the name has nothing to do with the R&B singer — though the vessel’s Polynesian and Art Deco interior does give it flair.

For Glen Allen, who oversees Saylor’s boats — yes, he owns several — the story of USHER and the other megayachts at this year’s  Miami Yacht Show  is not another wealthy Miami-area resident with a large ship.

Rather, it’s the story of how these ships comprise an essential part of the Miami-area economy. And USHER, the largest locally owned boat in this year’s show, which opens Thursday, is a textbook example, he says.

USHER was commissioned in 2007 by Seattle-based Delta Marine — “one of the last quality American large yacht builders left in the U.S.,” Allen says. Its first owner, Jerry Herbst, had built up a series of gas stations and casinos under the  Terrible Herbst brand , and decided to christen it “Mr. Terrible.”

Its eventual fate in Herbst’s hands was indeed unfortunate. Herbst was forced to sell the vessel in 2009 shortly after his company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as the global financial crisis hit. The ship went without a new owner until 2013, when Saylor purchased it after catching sight of it at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The biggest reason for the purchase was also the simplest, Allen says: With just a 7 1/2-foot draft, it would fit in the dock behind Saylor’s Miami Beach residence on Indian Creek. The name USHER comes from the name of a software product sold by Saylor’s company, MicroStrategy.

The vessel’s cruisings over the years have taken it up to the Washington, D.C., area, where MicroStrategy is based, as well as to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and New England. Saylor entertains corporate clients in addition to friends and family, Allen says. It also plays host to scientific research projects as part of the The International SeaKeepers Society.

Given the multi-hour effort it takes to get the boat out of Indian Creek and into open water, the yacht show will represent one of the rare occasions where a local can catch a glimpse of the vessel up close.

Allen says the boat should not just be viewed as a local attraction — its impact is much wider.

“We’re supporting the local economy through vendors that service the yacht,” he said. “It really is a commerce-producing platform for the local economy.”

These vessels also create or support jobs; in USHER’s case, 12 directly, Allen says. And when one considers how many boats like USHER are docked in the Miami area, Allen says, it becomes clear how these yachts perform a vital function in the local economy.

“I’ve heard people say, ‘Well, there’s that big rich guy with that big fancy yacht — why spend so much money on that?’ They don’t realize how much goes into that boat, and goes to support the local economy.”

According to Informa, the 32,000 visitors expected at the five-day yacht show will have a statewide economic impact of $486 million, including 3,576 jobs supported. In 2018, total estimated sales by Florida companies during the show reached $252.6 million; Miami-Dade companies contributed more than $64.9 million in estimated sales of marine products. In 2018, the total excise and sales taxes generated within Florida from the show came to an estimated $31.8 million.

The Miami Yacht Show is being held concurrently with the Miami International Boat Show, which features a wider variety of boat products geared toward more mainstream buyers. Together, the two shows will feature more than 2,000 boats on display, representing the largest marine showcase in the world.

Vessels featured at this year’s yacht show include:

  • The U.S. debut of SilverYachts’ 278-foot BOLD
  • The world debut of Hatteras Yacht’s GT65 (65 feet)
  • The world debut of Monte Carlo Yachts’ MCY 70 Skylounge (70 feet), the first model of the new MCY Collection

Azimut Yachts will also showcase 18 yachts, including three U.S. debuts: The Azimut 78 (78 feet), Azimut S8 (80 feet), and Azimut Grande 32 Metri (105 feet). The show will also serve as the world premier of the Azimut Verve 47 (47 feet).

Meanwhile, the boat show will feature:

  • The Scarab 285 ID from Benteau, billed as the largest recreation jet boat on the market, topping out at 54 miles-per-hour and zooming from 0 to 30 miles per hour in less than five seconds.
  • Lexus’ LY 650, a 65-foot yacht from the luxury carmaker.
  • The world debut of Nautitech’s 47 Power Cat catamaran, which reaches a top speed of 25 miles per hour thanks to two Volvo 300hp engines.

What It Was Like to Be on the Entourage Party Yacht

this image is not available

The opening scene of the Entourage movie called for the most beautiful people in the world to gather on a yacht off the coast of Ibiza. Last January, a yacht was afloat and beautiful people abounded, but instead of the Mediterranean hotspot, filming took place off the coast of Miami's Bill Baggs State Park in Key Biscayne. I was there, one of a horde of extras who were paid $100 to $300 per day, including 49 party girls, six "hottie" party girls, two yacht bartenders, four party guys, three older rich men, one Euro dude, two yacht crew, and three topless girls. The topless girls made $500 per day, though. One of them named Priscilla told me so.

There was glamor, and, of course, breasts. Oh, the breasts. Bikini-clad beauties were plentiful on the 154-foot luxury super-yacht for the next two days, tanned to perfection and sprayed down with oil and body makeup. The fleet captain explained that this yacht was one of five owned by billionaire software entrepreneur Michael Saylor, a notorious womanizer and serial partier. Built for a cool $52 million in 2007, it cost $225,000 a week to rent. The ship's name was Usher , not after the R&B crooner, but after one of Saylor's software products.

As a refresher, Entourage 's eight-season run on HBO ended in 2011 with Vince (Adrian Grenier) heading to Paris to marry Vanity Fair writer Sophia (Alice Eve) after a stint in rehab. Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) went from chauffeur to millionaire after investing in a tequila company, while Drama (Kevin Dillon) pretty much just continued to be Drama. Vince's manager Eric (Kevin Connolly) reconciled with on-again-off-again girlfriend Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui), who was pregnant with his child. Ari (Jeremy Piven) quit his job as agency head to focus on his relationship with Mrs. Ari (Perrey Reeves)... until he received a call asking if he'd like to become the chairman and CEO of Time Warner. We were left hanging as he contemplated the offer. Needless to say, the door was open for a potential movie adaptation. Four years later, here we are.

The opening scene of the Entourage movie, set to be released on June 3, is perhaps its most important, a first impression meant to set the tone of the entire film. So crucial was it to director and writer Doug Ellin that he requested an animation be made, shot for shot, of how the dramatic, party-filled yacht sequence would unfold. He showed off the animation on his phone to friends. He knew it was just what he wanted.

But there's a lot of room for contingencies between animating an elaborate scene and filming it, and almost immediately it was clear that things were not going as planned because of one culprit: the wind. It was so strong that Connolly joked about it blowing him off the ship, and later the unthinkable happened as a sudden gust flung Dillon's fedora straight from his head and into the ocean. "I got a piece of it," moped Ferrara. "That would have been a great save."

"You don't have great hands," Ellin chided Dillon.

A hat flying over a yacht is only a catastrophe when time is of the essence and the wardrobe department's backup hats are a shuttle, a golf cart, and a ferry boat ride away. The shoot cost around $250,000 to $400,000 per day and was being crammed into two days of filming. "We can throw the girls out there and tell them to pretend it's warm but we can't deal with the wind," Ellin said. "There's nothing we can do about the wind. I'd take five degrees less for no wind."

Tomorrow would be crunch time.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Ellin, who wrote and directed the film, is a Brooklyn native. He comes across as a confident bro in the body of a 47-year-old Jewish guy, although he looks closer to 37. Yes, Entourage is partially thanks to Mark Wahlberg, who is producing the film and whose life served as the inspiration behind the series' lead character, Vincent Chase, but Ellin is the creator of the franchise. He dreamed up the idea and wrote much of the show, slyly throwing in plot points taken from his own life. As with the lead character, most of the people he calls his best friends are, in fact, his friends from childhood. They're invited on set, to private dinners with celebrities, and along for nights out with beautiful women. His fiancée Maddie Diehl (who makes a cameo in the film during party scenes) has a body that could rival most Victoria's Secret models. Ellin is Entourage .

Despite the series finale's cliffhanger, it's a miracle everything came together for the movie to actually happen. A week before the first days of shooting were planned to take place, plenty was still up in the air. The script was being reworked, there were concerns about the weather, and Connolly's schedule for his new CBS show Friends with Better Lives was an issue (the show would end up getting canceled after nine episodes). Add to that the fact that contract negotiations nearly put a halt to the entire movie. Just four months before shooting the yacht scene, when Ellin was asked on Twitter what the odds were that the Entourage movie would come to fruition, he told fans that he "wouldn't bet on it," and that it looked "less and less likely every day."

The actors had reportedly been upset that Piven had been offered more than them, and they were holding out. On one hand, Piven was the only cast member with three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe, and there was little doubt that he turned in the series' best performance. On the other hand, each cast member was equally important to making this movie happen, and all five needed to sign on. If one said no, it was a no-go. There would be no film without the entire entourage. With the series still the biggest success for all five major players, though, it was clear that everyone wanted this movie to happen despite how unlikely it may have looked. And for that very reason, it did.

The wind had subsided and, compared to the day before, the 66-degree temperature felt more like a crip 90. A scene featuring all four main guys on the deck in the middle of a raucous yacht party was about to start shooting. There were topless models, half-naked models, and bulked-up guys in swim trunks. Waiters carried trays of scrumptious appetizers, and cocktails flowed like water, albeit with a slight Hollywood twist: The food was inedible, Stella Artois bottles were filled with SmartWater, champagne was Martinelli's sparkling apple cider, and screwdrivers were simply orange juice. Though actual alcohol was not involved, everyone onboard was relaxed and having plenty of fun.

"Whoa!" shouted Connolly to a guy beginning to unzip his shorts on the yacht's upper sun deck. "The only thing I ask is that you keep your pants zipped!"

Eyes turned upward toward the embarrassed extra. "Sorry, I'm supposed to be wearing a bathing suit," he said as he shamefully removed his shorts to uncover a flashy, revealing Speedo, one that he was clearly hoping to expose at the last moment possible.

"Oh. Sorry. I get it now," said Connolly, laughing. "I thought something else was going to be revealed."

I was told I could be an extra, so there I was, in a modest one-piece and sarong, somewhere in between the partygoers cavorting, trying to look like how I imagined Cara Delevingne would if she were there, with my arms in the air, dancing with my Stella Artois filled with water near one of the Euro-looking extras who sported a small diamond stud in one ear and a winged tattoo across his back.

During one take, I watched him strategically working his way around the party so that he was always in the frame as the cameraman circled around the movie's leading men. He had created an entire storyline for himself, pretending that one of the topless girls had walked away from him and he was going to chase after her—Method extra-ing. Eventually he bumped the cameraman and was told to stay put in one spot. So much for his big debut.

The prettiest girls were brought to the front. Paparazzi on nearby boats snapped photos from a distance while the Flight Facilities song "Crave You" played over the speakers. "I walked into the room dripping in gold/Yeah dripping in gold," Giselle's hypnotic voice sang.

"Won't people be able to see that boat in the background?" Connolly said in between takes, pointing to a boat floating nearby. Sure enough, a few minutes later crew members began to scream about how the nearby boat needed to "get to the Usher 's bow immediately! You're holding up the shot!"

Connolly could have easily been mistaken for an assistant director. He was constantly pointing out continuity issues ("Shouldn't Nina get out of the tub like she did in the other shot?"), the time between takes, and issues with the background music. "Can we please play any song but that song?" he complained when Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" played during a party scene. While such a vocal actor might be a major faux pas on any other set, Connolly was usually right, so no one seemed to mind the extra eyes and ears.

Then there was Dillon, who much like his character on the show, seemed adorably awkward with women. He offered models in bikinis his coat during breaks and chanted "It's good to be king!" while posing with them for photos. Grenier was mostly interested in talking about the new whale documentary he was producing and how much he loved The Skins, a new band he was managing. Ferrara talked baseball with his co-stars in between takes.

The big opening helicopter scene was about to happen, but it was proving hard to make a bunch of sober Miamians pretend to look drunk and dance. "Throw your hands in the air!" screamed a crew member. "But stop looking up at the helicopter!"

Sports Illustrated and Victoria's Secret model Nina Agdal stood nearby on the boat's edge in a royal blue bikini, her hair full of glorious curled extensions, a single gold necklace dangling in front of her chest.

She was making her movie debut in the opening scene playing Brigitte, a French beauty onboard. Adriana Lima was considered for the part but was deemed "too recognizable" to have a role in which she didn't play herself. She wasn't the only one who didn't make it to the final cast list. Emily Ratajkowski ended up with a role that was originally written for Kate Upton, who apparently decided, or was advised, not to play herself. A role planned for Rihanna was rewritten for UFC Women's Champion Ronda Rousey when Rihanna didn't work out.

"I want to see someone twerk!" Agdal yelled, as a tiny woman in a leopard-print bikini fulfilled her wishes and began shaking.

The helicopter swarmed overhead as two women on jet skis crisscrossed near the stern of the yacht as a separate boat carried Ferrara, Dillon, and Connolly. Someone was yelling from the water and I looked down to see one of the two jet ski girls trying to get the attention of someone on the crew. "How much longer is this?" she pleaded, visibly shaking. "We are freezing! I'm going numb."

"Oh no!" cooed Agdal. "I wish I could switch with her. I really would."

Supermodels are known for working half-naked in frigid conditions, so I got the impression Agdal might have been serious.

"That's a wrap!" someone yelled, as the ship lit up in cheers and the helicopter flew away into the distance.

"Nobody makes movies about good times anymore unless you have a stupid comedy," said a woman named Claudette, a still photographer with a thick European accent. She was talking with a cameraman about whether there would be more Entourage films to follow. "There's an Entourage crowd," she continued. "It's all over the world believe or not, in France and England and Germany. They'll do it, one, two, three." The world needs more films like Entourage , she argued, films about good times.

"Do you guys still feel like you're on the boat? I keep swaying like I'm still on the boat," said Ferrara hours after filming had wrapped and he had joined Dillon, Connolly, Grenier, Ellin, and Agdal at Prime 112 steak house along with a few other crew members and close friends. Diners inside stared and gawked.

" Entourage is here!" they whispered.

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, a fan of the show, was also dining at the restaurant and came over to say hello before the crew headed to the wrap party at the new Miami nightclub E11even.

Transportation from dinner to the club came in the form of a giant party bus lined with booths and fitted with disco lights, a smoke machine, and bottle service. Grenier grabbed a harmonica and began playing along to the songs while the cast and crew danced, holding on to the sides of the bus as it made its way down the Miami streets. It was everything the yacht party was and wasn't—all the glam but with actual booze and music that didn't stop playing. It looked like a scene straight out of the show, but this time it was real. The entourage was back.

Tech Billionaire Launches ‘NetJet for Yachts’ With Fleet Miami

The latest post from a Pursuitist guest writer.

MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor collects yachts the way some enthusiasts collect watches or cars. And when you make your living at the top of the tech world, it seems simple enough to launch a small company with a minimum $250,000 membership fee, right?

Well, for Saylor, it is. His newest venture, Fleet Miami , lets members purchase blocks of credits to be exchanged for charter across a fleet of luxury yachts, many of which are part of Saylor’s personal collection.

Buy in to rent the 154′, five-stateroom “Usher,” the acclaimed 147′, Feadship “Harle” with its crew of nine, the 87′ “Moksha” or the more manageable 35-passenger, 36′ “Julia” for a quick cruise around Biscayne Bay. Crave a trip, not just a three-hour tour? Buy a seven-day charter through the Florida Keys for  $70,000-$280,000, depending on yacht selection.

In a post on his personal Facebook page, owner/founder Saylor made light of his new venture, writing “think of it as NetJets for yachts, albeit more exclusive and less ambitious.” Nice one.

We’re excited to see where this new company sails in the coming months.

MicroStrategy chief Michael Saylor launches luxury yacht charter business in Miami

Michael Saylor has entered the yacht charter business.

The chief executive and co-founder of Tysons Corner-based MicroStrategy, a maker of business intelligence software, notified his Facebook followers this month that he had started the luxury business, called Fleet Miami.

“I have launched a company that operates yachts for owners and actively charters them under a single brand,” Saylor said in a March 1 posting. “Think of it as NetJets for yachts, albeit more exclusive and less ambitious.”

Memberships start at $250,000 for 250 credits and go up to $1 million for 1,000 credits, according to the Fleet Miami Web site. A seven-day Florida Keys trip can cost as much $280,000, depending on the yacht you choose.

The site lists nine vessels, including the 154-foot Usher and the 147-foot Harle, both owned by Saylor. The other yachts range from the 87-foot Moksha to the 36-foot Julia.

Pursuitist, a luxury-goods blog, reported the news earlier .

Saylor’s yacht venture appears to have at least some business ties to MicroStrategy, according to state and federal records.

Florida business records list Fleet Miami's parent company as Aeromar Management, a firm incorporated in Delaware in April 2007.

Aeromar entered into an agreement with MicroStrategy in January 2011 that provides Aeromar with 150 square feet of space at MicroStrategy's headquarters and other services free of charge, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Those filings also name Saylor as Aeromar’s sole member and state that the agreement requires MicroStrategy to provide Saylor with “gross-up” payments, or financial reimbursement, for taxes he incurs as a result of the arrangement between his two companies.

Requests for comment from a MicroStrategy spokesman brought no response. Thomas Heyer, the operations manager at Aeromar, did not return calls seeking comment.

News of Saylor's yacht business comes as a group of MicroStrategy's large shareholders have been voicing concern that his luxurious lifestyle and time away from the office have become a distraction from his business duties.

Critics cite what they see as a lagging stock price as evidence that MicroStrategy is undervalued compared with its competitors in the software and data industry.

Gil Simon, the portfolio manager for technology and entertainment at Apex Capital, a large shareholder that has been critical of MicroStrategy's performance and has called for Saylor to step aside , called Saylor's focus on a yacht company "frustrating."

“If anyone needed further evidence of Saylor’s lack of commitment to MicroStrategy, the company he is supposed to be running on a day to day basis, this is it,” Simon said in an e-mail. “While shareholders are agonizing over the company’s inferior performance, he starts a yacht company. It is frustrating to say the least.”

The company has defended Saylor, saying he built MicroStrategy into a profitable multinational enterprise and that he remains as engaged as ever in business operations, even when he is away from the office.

Some of Saylor's time away is spent at his 18,006-square-foot mansion on the Miami waterfront, where his yachts, including Usher , are docked.

Usher, which can accommodate 12 guests in its five staterooms, “is the ultimate sport yacht combined with the refined elegance of the most luxurious gentleman’s yacht,” according to the Fleet Miami Web site.

"Play by day with an arsenal of toys from the giant swim and fishing decks: wake boarding, wind surfing, snorkeling, rendezvous diving, fishing like no other, kayaking, paddle boards . . . whatever you desire. Dip into the ocean or lounge by the Jacuzzi and sun bathe from one of the many sun pads."

New 'Entourage' Movie Yacht Scenes Filmed on Charter Yacht USHER

By Editorial Team   20 January 2014

The stunning 46m/151’ charter yacht ‘USHER’ was the setting for a number of scenes shot for the eagerly awaited ‘Entourage’ movie starring Adrian Grenier, which finally began filming on Thursday 16th January.

The scenes were shot in Miami on day two of filming where Grenier and his four original co-stars, Kevin Dillon (Johnny ‘Drama’), Kevin Connolly (Eric Weinstein) and Jerry Ferrara (Turtle) were surrounded by a crowd of partying models. Even though weather conditions were less than ideal for the bikini-clad models, luxury charter yacht ‘USHER’ offered the perfect surroundings for the movie, boasting stylish and spacious living areas and an array of outdoor amenities.

The eighth and final series of hit HBO ‘Entourage’, which is roughly based on the early career of executive producer Mark Wahlberg, was wrapped up in 2011 and plans for a big-budget movie have since been in the pipeline.

Speculation was rife last year about whether the movie would even go ahead with certain actors holding out for bigger salaries. All rumours were put to rest though last week with all cast members looking happy at being reunited and writer-director Doug Ellin even took to Instagram to post a picture of himself on board ‘USHER’ flanked either side by models which he captioned ‘rough first day of shoot’.

It was originally thought that supermodel Kate Upton would be cast for the female lead in the upcoming movie, but it looks as though Danish model Nina Agdal who was pictured on board the superyacht with the rest of the cast, may have landed the final role.

Although filming is clearly underway, there is no release date for the ‘Entourage’ movie as yet. The award-winning Delta Marine-built charter yacht ‘USHER’ offers accommodation for up to 12 guests in five luxurious staterooms, for more details on locations and availability contact your yacht charter broker .
