- Rolex Clasps
The clasp is one of the most overlooked, yet important parts of a Rolex watch . The clasp is what stands between the wearer and the loss of their valuable timepiece. The clasp is also the most "used" part of the watch, as the wearer will always handle and adjust it when taking the watch on or off - regardless of the specific model they may own.
Without the clasp, a Rolex watch is unwearable. It becomes little more than a pretty, small clock. As with all aspects of design, Rolex paid careful attention to the clasp. Designs throughout the years ensured reliability, strength, and protection, as well as aesthetic value. Rolex has designed a series of clasps using the latest research and technology, each put through stringent testing to ensure the highest quality product.
Clasps have always been important. As such, Rolex has always taken a market-leading level of care in their construction. But what constitutes market-leading has shifted notably over the past few decades. While it would be more than fair to have regarded a Rolex clasp from the sixties or seventies as one of the best in class, comparing those products to the modern day’s engineering masterpieces would display an enormous disparity in build quality.

Identifying your clasp
If you reference our Rolex bracelet guide you'll note that many bracelets are stamped with codes. You can often find these codes on two different locations: the clasp and the end-links of the bracelet - although it should be noted that certain other codes can appear on other location of a Rolex bracelet.
However, the vast majority of Rolex clasps will have codes on them and Rolex began the practice of stamping clasps in 1976. The vast majority of clasp codes begin with one or two letters, followed by a number 1 through 12. The letter(s) indicates the year, and the 1 through 12 number indicates the month.
In 2011, Rolex did away with the previous clasp code configurations system, changing to a completely random three digit clasp code system. The three digit code is composed of either all numbers, all letters, or a combination of the two. Because the code is random, it reveals nothing about the timepiece’s production date like previous-generation Rolex clasps.
Different types of Rolex clasp
While the Oysterlock is the most famous type of modern Rolex clasp (largely because it is deployed on many of the Crown’s most sought after models), it is most definitely not the only one. Quite a few different Rolex clasps are lurking in the collection. Let's dive into them now.
Oysterlock Clasp
This newly developed clasp attempts to reconcile the demands made on the brand's Professional watches. It does this by skillfully blending sophisticated engineering, smooth lines, and security. The standard Oysterlock clasp is crafted from 904L steel with increased chromium content. The added chromium makes the clasp especially corrosion-resistant - perfect for use in the water.
Glidelock Clasp
The Rolex Glidelock clasp is very often confused with the Oysterlock clasp itself. While it looks rather similar to the Oysterlock, the Glidelock clasp is much longer. Concealed within it is a truly fantastic extension system. This extension allows divers to expand the band by approximately 20mm in precise 2mm increments. Additionally, the Fliplock extension links on the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea models enable the bracelet to be adjusted by a further 26mm. As such, wearers can quickly adjust the watch to be worn comfortably over a thick diving suit.
While we may well take this kind of functionality for granted these days, it was not always the case. Considering the clasp’s importance, it should come as no surprise that just as much research and development have gone into improving this aspect of the wearing experience as any other aspect of watchmaking in the past half-century. The Glidelock is Rolex’s most advanced and technically impressive clasp and it is used on only the brand's professional dive watches. It is, given those models’ popularity these days, unlikely to be found sitting on the shelves of your local authorized dealer.
Rolex buckle
From the most complex Rolex clasp to the simplest. The Rolex buckle is a rare beast these days as the vast majority of Rolex’s watches are delivered on bracelets. However, the sometimes overlooked Cellini range still produces watches that come on leather straps, affixed to wrists by solid 18k gold pin and tang buckles (or ardillon , if you prefer).
These classic buckles work just like a standard belt and are very common throughout the industry. They work particularly well on dressier timepieces as they do not add too much visual bulk to the wrist’s underside and are slender enough to slide effortlessly under a shirt cuff.
Oysterclasp
Not to be confused with the Oysterlock clasp, the Oysterclasp clasp looks almost identical - except for the fact it lacks the additional fold-over security lock found on its bigger brother. The Oysterclasp is found most commonly found on watches from Rolex's Classic series, such as the Datejust and Oyster Perpetual models, which are Rolex's everyday timepieces and thus not expected to be used in such challenging environments like the Professional series watches.
The Oysterclasp is a simple clasp, perfectly suited to everyday wear. Fitted to both Oyster and Jubilee bracelets, the Oysterclasp is Rolex's standard go-to clasp option and represents the perfect fusion of reliability, regality, and innovative design.
Hidden Crownclasp
The Rolex Hidden Crownclasp is perhaps the most elegant of all the Rolex clasps. It was conceived to allow a bracelet to appear as if an unbroken chain of steel and/or gold wrapped around the wearer's wrist. When closed, the Rolex Hidden Clasp is only locatable by the coronet logo that sits proudly at the point of fastening.
You can find this clasp style on President, Pealrmaster, and Jubilee bracelets, although it is no longer offered as an option on the Jubilee bracelet within Rolex's current lineup. It was once more common to find it on the Rolex Datejust than it is today, as the modern Jubilee bracelet is now fitted with the Oysterclasp on the larger models (36mm and 41mm). This update is in line with an overall trend towards sportier and more robust styles throughout the Rolex catalog.
However, if you’re a fan of the hidden clasp, you can still pick it up on the smaller Datejust models with the president bracelet, along with older generations of the Datejust that are fitted with solid-link Jubilee bracelets. Lastly, the variant of the hidden clasp (which some regard as a distinct style of Crownclasp in its own right) can be seen on the Pearlmaster bracelet and helps maintain its elegant and seamless design.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.
This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

RLX titanium
Ultralight resistance
RLX titanium is a grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex. Like all titanium alloys, it is especially lightweight and is noted for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
Another characteristic of RLX titanium is the possibility of working it to give a polished or satin finish according to the brand’s specifications. Its high mechanical strength makes it complex to work with, and the decision to use it has required the introduction of special production processes.
The Oyster bracelet
Alchemy of form and function.
The Yacht-Master 42, made from RLX titanium, is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. Developed at the end of the 1930s, this three-piece link bracelet remains the most universal in the Oyster Perpetual collection and is known for its robustness.
The Oyster bracelet of this new version of the Yacht-Master 42 features the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It is also equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. The Oyster bracelet in RLX titanium also includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by the brand – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity.

Complete Guide to Rolex Bracelet Clasps
The clasp of a Rolex bracelet is a crucial part of the watch’s design. Just as important as it is for comfort, it is equally important for durability and reliability. A bracelet clasp should be functional, comfortable, and look good at the same time.
Over the years, Rolex has used a number of different clasps for its bracelets. The clasps have been refined, improved, and upgraded, but at their core, they are very much similar to the predecessors, just like with Rolex’s watches.
Rolex currently has several different clasps that are used for its bracelets. Different clasps have different functionality and purpose, and therefore, they are used in different collections. It can be difficult to define exactly how many different clasps Rolex has because it really depends on how you count. For example, new, upgraded versions may have been released, but the clasp has retained its original name. With that said, there can be numerous different clasps under the same name.
Background and history of Rolex clasps
Just like Rolex’s bracelets, the Rolex bracelets have changed a lot over the decades. If you compare modern Rolex clasps with Rolex clasps from a few decades ago, the difference is very obvious. The clasps of the vintage Rolex watches are less robust and more flimsy. They do not give the impression of full reliability, and the metal is generally made quite thin, which means it does not feel as solid and robust as the claps of today. And frankly, they aren’t. That is what Rolex is best at – evolution, not revolution.
Note that the additional functions that the clasps feature may or may not be exclusive for that particular clasp, which means one clasp may exist in different configurations.

Rolex clasps, oyster clasp.
The Oyster clasp is the standard clasp of the Oyster bracelet . Since this clasp is used for Rolex’s less sporty watches, such as the Datejust, they have no real need for a safety lock mechanism that locks the clasp into place.
What is interesting is that, as the name suggests, you would think that this clasp is only used on Oyster bracelets. However, that is not the case. Rolex has also started using the Oyster clasp on its Jubilee bracelets, likely because Rolex has found it functional and beautiful.
Oysterlock safety clasp
The Oysterlock clasp is developed and used especially for Professional watches. The Oysterlock clasp has a locking mechanism that locks the bracelet into place when the clasp is closed. This prevents accidental opening and is crucial for a sports watch in particular.
Hidden clasp
The hidden clasp, also known as a Rolex crown clasp or Rolex concealed clasp, is meant to be Rolex’s most elegant clasp. By removing the visible clasp, Rolex has made these bracelets more seamless, elegant, and refined.
The crown clasp name comes from the fact that instead of a clasp, they have a small Rolex coronet logo placed there instead. This is used to open and close the bracelet.
The President bracelet always has a hidden clasp. Rolex also used to use the Crown Clasp extensively for its Datejust models but has since moved on to a different clasp. Note that the hidden clasp is only available on the President bracelet and the Jubilee bracelet.
Glidelock clasp
The Glidelock clasp is interesting because technically, the Glidelock clasp is an Oyster clasp that also features the Oysterlock mechanism. But in its marketing, Rolex still calls it the Glidelock clasp , so that’s why we will go with.
The Glidelock clasp is only used for Rolex’s dive watches, which include the Submariner, DeepSea Sea-Dweller, and Sea-Dweller.
The Glidelock clasp is much longer than most other Rolex clasps, but there is a good reason for this, which is to make room for the Glidelock mechanism inside the clasp.
The Glidelock clasp is made for diving, and more specifically, to be able to adjust the bracelet to fit it on the outside of a swimsuit. This clasp allows you to adjust the size of the bracelet by about 20 mm in 2 mm increments.
A buckle is used for some of Rolex’s leather straps. Whilst leather straps have become less common for Rolex in recent decades, the company still makes watches on a leather strap, primarily the Cellini range.
The buckle of Rolex’s leather strap is quite straightforward. It has a crown on the buckle and is locked via a pin. The Rolex buckles of today are exclusively made of precious metal.
Pearlmaster clasp
The Pearlmaster clasp is exclusively made for the Pearlmaster range. The Pearlmaster clasp is almost a concealed crown clasp as it is very discreet, but its clasp is slightly visible and not completely concealed. Its design just blends in with the rest of the bracelet.
The Pearlmaster is Rolex’s most glamorous range of watches. As such, the Pearlmaster clasp always has a polished finish.

Hello, I have a question please. My 14060m was first sold in aug. 2012 and has a 3 digit clasp code of FZ1 Is this a very late production, most all I’ve ever seen were 2 digits on 2011 Submariners
Hello Louis, It is difficult to give a definite answer without the details, but what we can say is that it is not uncomommon or unlikely that the bracelet has been replaced.

Good day. I have a 124060 submariner with a standard glidelock clasp. Despite being an excellent piece I feel it is quite big, as I have rather small wrists, and miss the more discrete feeling of the standard oyster clasps found on non-professional models. Do you know if Rolex makes a “standard” brushed oyster clasp that fits the new 17mm submariner bracelet?

Hi, If you mean the Rolex crown logo on the clasp (locking buckle) then yes. Not always but if you’re talking about 2018 and 2019 models, then absolutely.

The Gridlock feature offers a total extension of up to 20mm. To use the Glidelock clasp function to adjust your Rolex bracelet's size, pop open the adjustable side of the bracelet from the clasp and then glide it back and forth until you find a size suitable for your wrist. Then, simply click the clasp back in place.
