YYachts Y9 review: new sweet spot of superyachting

  • Toby Hodges
  • October 20, 2023

The ability to get sailing quickly, easily and enjoyably is what makes the Y9 so appealing, says Toby Hodges after sailing Bella

Product Overview

Time. You may not be able to buy it, but some may be fortunate enough to buy the things that let you use it most efficiently. It was mid afternoon on a sweltering day in late June, Mallorca. I’d just come ashore from the Superyacht Cup Palma . With the rush hour traffic looming, roadworks stifling the city centre and the oppressive heat, there was surely no chance of any meaningful sail on the new Y9 that day, as it was located in Port Adriano, 25km along the coast.

Hitching a ride on Ulli’s (YYachts’s Hans-Ulrich Heisler) unnervingly powerful moped, we weaved through the city, avoided the motorway standstill and tailback and arrived at the Philippe Starck-designed marina within half an hour to be welcomed by Bella ’s crew, ready to depart.

Just 15 minutes later we were out of the marina and hoisting full sail via push buttons in a perfect Force 4 evening breeze. Bella heeled onto her wide powerful lines and we were straight into double figures, sailing at 10 knots in 13.

I was slightly dazzled by it all, and certainly impressed. This is no 25ft daysailer, rather a contemporary superyacht and yet the speed and ease with which we could get sailing with minimal fuss yet maximum pleasure is quite something.

However, this should perhaps come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Michael Schmidt’s background. A veteran racing sailor, his esteemed boatbuilding career is latterly built on making large yachts fun but crucially manageable to sail short-handed.

He saw a gap in the market to create premium yachts in the 70-100ft sector, built in series production to help offer value. His YYachts yard build light and fast carbon sandwich yachts with a ‘keep it simple’ philosophy. They are the creation of top designers, who are tasked with ensuring they look good, sail well, and are easily handled.

The Y9 has a 90ft Bill Tripp-designed modern hull shape with the volume of a 100-footer, and is also available as a Pilot House and a Custom version (which we saw last year in the stunning Prevail with its prominent squared deck house).

Bella launched in time for the Cannes Boat Show last autumn, and as I soon discovered when skipper Iloy Van Berk offered me the wheel, it boasts credible sailing merits: performance, handling and tangible enjoyment on the helm. Yes, this is a comparatively lightweight (55 tonne lightship) performance design for enjoyable, fast sailing, with a lofty mast and formidable sail area. But it’s also a luxury cruising yacht with voluminous tanks, stowage, comfort systems and twin engines.

Not that I could detect drag during our sail. The twin rudders gave assured control, with direct connection to the wheel, and the yacht felt stiff and nicely balanced.

Van Berk and his partner Elvira Estrany run a slick ship and keep Bella ready to go on short notice. Having worked for these owners for seven years, they know what they like and how to be prepared for them. While the Y9 is designed to accommodate four crew, Bella runs with three, which the skipper puts down to Elvira, ‘a superstar’ who cooks, cleans and sails/does deckhand work. “The boat design also allows us to handle it with three people,” he continues. “With the magic trim I can work the sheets. And the gennaker is on a furler – it has to be at 800m2!”

His point was proven when we went to tack… and no-one needed to do anything. It’s a one person affair. I brought the main in a little at the push of a button and the self-tacking jib sorted itself out. The combination of this headsail, a staysail option and a bowsprit that can take a hydraulic furling code sail, helps make such a large yacht easy to handle.

y yachts y9

Wide aft sections provide power and volume. A generous sail plan allows for enjoyable sailing in single figure winds, but the Y9 also felt stiff and stable in breeze. The push-button mainsheet is kept clear, led from the bimini arch through the boom. Photo: YYachts

According to designer Bill Tripp, it aids the Y9 to “sail well in blue water in the worst conditions and have light air performance to attract the keenest of sailors.”

When we cracked sheets to a beam reach, our average speed increased to 11.5-12 knots, and we clocked 12.5 in 16-18. Not bad figures for white sails cruising! And then the dolphins joined us to dance with and surf our bow waves. It was that kind of evening: gold standard sailing.

Secrets to simplicity

While we’ve talked about sail handling being key to the Y9’s ease of use, there is also the ease of manoeuvring, which we’ll come to, and the hull stability which help make it inviting for a broad spectrum of sailing experience.

The decks may be wide and flat, but the heel angle remained moderate. “The flared topsides allow for great deck spaces and added stability, a win-win that leads to a better boat,” Tripp explained. “Hull shape is optimised for 15° of heel, which is the most typical when globe-trotting.”

Bella ’s shakedown sail was a delivery trip from the Greifswald yard to Mallorca – in 12 days. That’s an average of over 9 knots or 288 mile days, and includes two stops for swell/supplies/rest! Sustained speeds in the low double figures are what this long powerful shape and generous sail area brings.

So there is pace on tap but it needs to be measured. When the wind reached 15 knots or more, I noted how Van Berk eased the mainsheet. Although Bella has clocked 25 knots before, the skipper says he prefers to keep it below 12 knots otherwise the loads shoot up.

y yachts y9

Performance cruising

While the Y9 has a performance hull shape and build, and could well suit superyacht regatta racing, Bella is very much set up for cruising, with the corresponding payload and gear aboard. The twin engines, genset, dual watermakers etc, (as well as solar and hydro renewable energy) gives the yacht multiple power sources and redundancy.

The renewables help allow for a silent ship at night. The twin drives and joystick-controlled thrusters also help offer better manoeuvrability in port and promote motorsailing efficiency. In light breeze Van Berk runs the leeward engine at 1,800rpm (for just one litre of diesel per hour), which creates enough apparent wind to sail at over 9 knots.

The power set up and ease of manoeuvrability all help make for an easy to use yacht.

“Our thought is to also attract new people to the sport and to tug people out of powerboats into something far more interesting,” said Tripp.

Bella ’s owner is a case in point as he previously had a Sunseeker 75 motorboat. Wanting to get into sailing he bought the first Y7 in build (also called Bella , which we sailed in 2019 ), on the understanding YYachts would build him a 90-footer as it scaled up. Despite he and his family having made so many happy memories on the Sunseeker, after just two weeks sailing the Y7 he confided to his skipper that he couldn’t believe he had ever had a powerboat. The owner now particularly likes long daysails, typically 100-200 miles from port to port.

This helps explain the fixed bimini and the shelter that provides to the vast cockpit. It also supports 5kW of solar panels on the roof. The bimini concept came from Van Berk after a scare on the previous Y7 when the skipper was struck in the head and knocked flat by the mainsheet while sailing off Corsica. Hence he lobbied for an arch for the mainsheet on the Y9. “Once we had that, it made sense to go for a hard bimini and the solar panels,” he explained. “It’s super comfortable, I love it.”

y yachts y9

The captive mainsheet is led from a single point on the bimini through a Cariboni hydraulic cylinder system in the Park Avenue boom, which not only keeps the mainsheet out of the cockpit and harm’s way, but allows for instant push-button control of the substantial mainsail from either pedestal.

Elsewhere Bella is kept relatively simple on deck with rod rigging for the carbon rig and halyards run neatly through the coachroof to two winches by either wheel.

So what are the downsides? Some may not like the fixed bimini look – but that’s obviously an option, which I consider to be a highly practical one. Solar field apart, sailing in upwards of 30ºC soon makes you seek shelter, while a sprayhood can also connect to the bimini.

Then there are the flat wide decks, which aren’t easy to negotiate in a pitching sea. As mentioned on previous YYachts designs, the expansive aft deck has its merits but it does present a long distance between the wheels or those aft winches that can be unnerving at heel. The majority of the aft deck hinges open to reveal the tender garage, so it would be difficult to install fixed structures on the deck, although there are handles on the pedestal and surrounding the crew companionway.

This YTender, which we have featured before, deserves another mention as Bella is the first yacht to carry one. The 4.35m carbon composite catamaran weighs just 230kg with a retractable electric drive to allow for beaching. It’s spacious, stable and designed to be the maximum size to fit in a large yacht garage. The YTender’s air tubes can be emptied or filled in just 45 seconds, reducing its beam by 30cm.

Plenty of choice

We’ve also featured the interior of Bella following a tour at its boat show debut, but when I reluctantly passed the helm over I had the chance to revisit below decks at heel where YYachts’ trademark sliding leather handrails came into good use to cross the saloon. It also felt noticeably calm. The yard uses an epoxy layer on the outer skin which it says helps with noise insulation.

y yachts y9

‘Soft minimalism’ under sail, where YYachts’ trademark sliding hand rails come in handy in the wide saloon. Photo: YYachts

It also uses a semi-custom production process where the parts are finished outside of the hull, the furniture subcontracted. This helps allow for a variety of layout choices yet a high standard of finish for the price. There are five different layout options for the Y9 including the opposite to Bella ’s, with a full beam master suite aft and crew area and galley forward.

Owners can specify their own interior designers and in Bella ’s case, Norm Architects from Copenhagen were again the choice. The dark and smoked oak styling might seem a little urban to some but is designed to create a retreat, described as soft minimalism. It has the feel of the owner’s previous Y7, while his forward cabin features suede-covered wardrobes and leather panels. Practical features include the rounded fiddles, spacious machinery area and good crew accommodation with private access.

y yachts y9

A question of time

Most owners are not typically going to use a superyacht for evening daysails (although YYachts new YBreeze concept is designed around such a mentality), however, our sail showed how achievable that is on the Y9. In an increasingly time-poor world, that could prove invaluable.

As we enjoyed a lovely fetch back towards the marina, still making easy speeds of 9.5-10 knots, I discussed the future cruising plans for Bella with her skipper. They aim to cross the Atlantic this autumn for a Caribbean season, before possibly going through Panama to Galapagos and then on up to Vancouver. The prospect of that latter leg instantly recalled one of my most memorable sails: the same passage on the same size boat by the same designer 20 years ago, when delivering the remarkable carbon ocean cruiser Shaman.

You have to hand it to Mr Tripp, he has a gift for drawing large yachts which are rewarding to sail and devour the miles with ease. Couple that with Schmidt’s boatbuilding knowledge, innovation and the ease of handling that he demands of such craft, and it’s clear to see why ‘Y’ represents the new sweet spot of superyachting.

YYachts delivered the first new Flagship Y9

yyachts y9

YYachts delivered the first Y9. The new flagship of the German shipyard shows sporty lines, an enormous volume and a sophisticated interior.

The yard’s new flagship Y9 is born from the ambitious idea of building a lightweight masterpiece of craftsmanship following the company’s philosophy to reduce sailing to its essentials and serving all customer’s needs.

With a length of 29.71 m, the Y9 presents – due to clever construction and transverse garage in the aft – the same volume of a 100ft yacht with a private owners’ apartment to offer maximum privacy, comfortable guest cabins and a large and flexible crew area. The exterior design and naval architecture was drawn by Bill Tripp while the interior is the result of a styling by Norm Architects and the experience of Design Unlimited.

YYachts y9

As all YYachts models, the Y9 is built completely from carbon fibre optimizing performance and making her extremely competitive. With her length of 90 feet, the yacht has an interesting rating and is for sure able to win some trophies at the St Barths Bucket, the Superyacht Cup or the Maxi Rolex Cup. According to Zademack, several discussions with owners were decisive for the development of the Y9: “ Actually, customers were interested in 100 feet in length. However, from this size upwards – in my experience – yachts become disproportionately expensive because many custom-built components have to be installed. With our expertise, we have therefore implemented the comfort of a 100-foot yacht on a length of 90 feet. With our new Y9 we are entering the super yacht segment. ”

Happy crew, happy owner

The Y9 generates an incomparable volume due to her transversely arranged tender garage in the stern and even has a separate owner’s apartment which consists of a private office, a dressing room, a bedroom and a bathroom with double washbasin including a separate shower and a separate toilet. A maximum of privacy is guaranteed, which the owner can enjoy with family or close friends.

Y8 Custom

Great importance was also given to the design of the crew area. As it is an unwritten law in yachting “Happy crew, happy owner”, the crew cabins on the Y9 have been designed extra large, with well thought-out storage space and an additional crew lounge. The captain’s cabin can be converted into a saloon during the day, for example – rooms on the Y9 do not have to have a single predefined purpose. Following this concept, the interior layout options can be customized with the YYachts design department to satisfy all customer’s desires and to preserve the exclusive style of the boat. Incidentally, Y Yachts offers no fewer than five different layouts for the Y9. And it is available on request as a Pilot Saloon version and as a Y9 Custom with almost unlimited freedom of choice when it comes to design.

YYachts y9

The interior of the first Y9 was jointly developed by two design studios. Norm Architects from Copenhagen and Design Unlimited from Lymington combined their architectural and yachting experience and created a Scandinavian elegant look for the Y9 that follows the principle of “soft minimalism” – oiled oak and grey fabrics and panels determine the colour palette.

Katrine Goldstein, Managing Director of Norm Architects, says: “ The Y9 already follows the award-winning Y7 in its design, but is much more complex and goes deeper. The Y9 will also be a luxurious retreat to get away from the constant stimulation that our everyday lives bring. To support an overall exclusive look and feel throughout the interior, only essential yet thoughtful, luxurious bespoke elements take up space where needed, to achieve a pared back interior with room for the life lived within. The wooden, paneled walls and curved interior elements in oak add a warm, organic feel to the space, while optically stretching the space vertically to make the rooms appear more spacious. Sliding doors and inbuilt storage effortlessly blend in with the architectural framework of the boat, with no disruptive elements. ” Great importance was also attached to a quiet yacht. To achieve this, YYachts engaged the noise consultants from Van Cappellen. “You sleep like a baby on board”, comments Dirk Zademack.

26 knots to Cannes

On deck, the Y-flagship pleases with its sheer walkways and the division of the cockpit areas common on such formats: Guests are accommodated in front, while the crew works aft. The mainsheet is nowhere to be found. It is centered on the bimini top and hidden in the Park Avenue main boom. To adjust or set the sails, to fetch the kicker or the luff, all it takes is the push of a button, which is why such a 29.71-meter cruiser can even be sailed by two people. Its performance potential is impressive: the hull speed is beyond twelve knots. The main alone measures 242 square meters of sail area, the gennaker catches the wind on 617 square meters. On the passage, speeds of 26 knots were reached, the captain reports. From Greifswald to Cannes took only eleven days, up to 240 nautical miles were mastered in 24 hours. A crew of four was necessary; in cruising and owner mode, two crew members – captain and stewardess – are usually permanently on board.

YYachts y9

Catamaran as tender

The garage of the new Y9 contains another highlight of the yacht – the brand new YTender. Like the mother ship, it is built of carbon composite and weighs just 230 kilograms at a length of 4.35 meters. Designed as a catamaran, the Y-tender is stable in the water and its hydrodynamics make it very efficient underway. It is available with both a conventional outboard and an electric drive; both can be retracted, allowing the Y-tender to land directly on the beach. Its layout is designed to be flexible, as is the equipment and decoration. The Y-Tender’s air hose can be emptied or filled in just 45 seconds. When empty, this reduces the width of the tender by 30 centimeters, resulting in a better pack size. The necessary electric pumps are integrated into the Y-tender. The dinghy is built entirely in Germany, ensuring a high level of vertical integration. YYachts’ keep-it-simple philosophy also applies here: a yacht must be reduced to what is necessary without restricting comfort.

Designer’s comment – Bill Tripp – Exterior and Naval Architecture

“When Michael Schmidt and I first talked he asked for a boat that you would immediately want to sail at first sight, that embodies modern beauty, simplicity, performance and ease of use, along with the capability to go anywhere. Michael identified that many yachts in the 70–100ft range are built as a one-off and there was an opportunity to present a world class yacht built in series through process engineering.

We have worked with MSY to design a series of boats that are constructed from the best materials in a production process that is based on the assembly of parts already finished outside of the boat. This increases the ease of making a highly finished boat with a level of flexibility in the configuration of the spaces. The result is a high-end series that is not only appealing, but obtainable.

YYachts Y9

Our thought is to also attract new people to the sport and to tug people out of powerboats into something far more interesting. The overarching principle is to keep the boat easy to use. Thus we have designed a boat that can comfortably be sailed by a few people. Equipped with a self-tacking jib, hydraulic furling code sail and staysail, these boats can sail well in blue water in the worst conditions and have light air performance to attract the keenest of sailors. The boats have two engines, a bow and stern thruster and joystick controls, making it easy to manoeuvre both when docking and sailing. They are built with identical structures in carbon/epoxy composite with twin rudders and fixed or telescoping keels. They cover a range of displacements with constant vertical and longitudinal centres of gravity, and bulbs and rig sizes designed and built to match the displacement and stability. The result is that the boats are well balanced between performance and luxury.

The first Y9 production result, Bella, comes with a hydro generation package from Oceanvolt, a large hard top bimini with 14sq m of solar panels, and an extensive battery package. These features will allow the boat to generate fossil fuel free energy both when sailing and moored.

I have no interest in designing boats that are cluttered or slow. The flared topsides allow for great deck spaces and added stability, a win-win that leads to a better boat. The hull shape is optimised for 15 degrees of heel which is the most typical when globe-trotting. This is also a good average for café racing as well as distance racing. The boat has a high prismatic form for highspeed ocean sailing, with a large sail plan that also makes sailing in six knots of breeze a realistic pleasure, a low centre of gravity to carry the sail plan and a moderate LCB location to improve sea keeping in waves.

The shape, while generally of a dinghy oriented lineage, is modified for sea-keeping and reduced slamming. The hull’s beam to depth ratio (known as BTR) is low to keep the hull shape from being a frying pan upwind in big ocean waves. The bow is finer than some for the same reason and keeping the prismatic high while doing this, and the LCB from going aft was a challenge that appealed to us. Designing a luxury yacht for extended series production is a unique task for a naval architect and means we must design the boat so that it can have different features in keeping with a client’s needs as well as be able to sail ably in different configurations to suit the owner’s mission. With a total of five different cabin configurations, the Y9 has something for everyone interested in this size boat.

This balanced combination of speed, reliability and comfort is ideal for an owner seeking a world cruising boat that will be fast in the fun regattas that have ascended in the last decade, at a price point that is unbeatable in today’s market.”

Sailboat in the ocean

Y9 by YYachts and Norm Architects Makes One Smooth Sail

Nour Abi-Nakhoul June 14, 2023

The boat cuts through the water smoothly, sleek and slate grey, with its dark black sail towering overhead, mountainous and monumental, with its name, Y9, proudly emblazoned near the very top. She’s the stunning result of the newest collaboration between Copenhagen- based architecture and design studio Norm Architects and Michael Schmidt at YYachts, an award-winning company that makes fast-sailing, minimalistic yachts created from carbon.

Y9 Sailboat YYachts Norm Architects

Norm Architects creates residential and commercial spaces across the world, from a high-class dental clinic in Belgium to a tea lounge in China and a beachfront property in Sri Lanka. All of it is tied together by their signature approach of “soft minimalism,” an unapologetically Scandinavian design ethos that prioritizes spaciousness and simplicity while maintaining warmth and tactility. The studio finds their natural pairing in this partnership with Schmidt, who “shares the same design ambitions of unique, understated luxury with a residential feel,” says Peter Eland, architect and partner at Norm. The slick, muted classiness of the Y9 is undeniable proof of the groups’ compatibility.

This is the second time Norm and YYachts have paired, the first being a 2019 collaboration on the Y7 yacht — a similarly sleek vessel with its interior also grounded in a modest, warm luxuriousness. With the Y9, Norm further refines the design characteristics and principles found in the Y7, bringing them to new heights. The studio faced two central challenges in translating soft minimalism into the hull of a yacht: remaining minimalistic despite such a limited space, and ensuring safety within a moving, water-bound vessel.

Y9 Sailboat YYachts Norm Architects Dining room

“Trying to fit everything was the most challenging part of the project. We had to rethink a lot of details due to the curved hull shape,” says Eland. The whole vessel is about 90 feet long, elliptical and narrow, with space taken up by framework elements. Norm’s first order of business was to emphasize simplicity by paring down the design to only what was essential, and to make more room for socializing, relaxing, and living.

Inessential aspects of the framework were removed to provide more fluid transitions between the spaces within the hull, and furniture and storage elements were, where possible, built-in so as to be unobtrusive — a small wine fridge, cabinets, and drawers are set smoothly into wood-panelled walls, and doors slide across rather than swing to take up less space.

Y9 Sailboat YYachts Norm Architects on open waters

The architects worked with, rather than against, the curved form of the ship to design a natural-feeling, relaxed space; everything, from the corners of the dining table to the edges of the walls, features smooth curves, with barely a single sharp corner seen throughout the entire hull. This flow helps negate the relative smallness of the space: so does the fact that many of the walls are made of thin wooden panels, which stretch the space vertically and make everything feel roomier. Layering is also used to give the impression that the space is more spacious and generous, like creating ledges behind the inbuilt sofas or astride doorways.

Safety was a top priority, and a unique challenge. Furniture and other objects need to be fastened and secured while the vessel is in motion, so they don’t get knocked around; passengers also need an abundance of places where they can hold on and steady themselves on rougher waters. A solution was found in elements that strike a balance between safety and beautiful simplicity: a heavy black handrail that contrasts nicely with the wood of the stairs, an orange-dyed leather strap hanging artfully from the ceiling, chairs that are affixed to the dining table with almost-invisible clips, and built-in furniture that appears unfixed. “It was interesting to design these functional requirements and at the same time create these beautiful details to them,” says Eland.

Y9 Sailboat YYachts Norm Architects

Similar to many of the studio’s other spaces, the hull of the boat emphasizes tactile surfaces, natural materials, and matte finishes in warm, neutral colours: beige, sand, earth. On the port side of the ship is a lounge area featuring a large, comfortable sofa and low coffee table in a cozy, homely setup that wouldn’t look out of place in a residential abode. This area is separated from the dining room by a short wooden flight of stairs that lead to the deck, the steps protruding out a bit so that lights on the bottoms can flood the space with warm, orange light during the evening.

Across the stairs is a long wooden table affixed to the ground on thin columns, with spaces for eight guests: minimal wiry chairs curve around one side, with a cream-upholstered bench on the other that matches the sofa in the lounge and ties the spaces together. In both the dining room and the lounge there’s a subtle contrast between the rich, dark wood of the wall panels and the creamy white walls around the ship’s windows, from which abundant light is cast across the space.

Y9 Sailboat YYachts Norm Architects

The panels shift their appearance slightly based on the quality of sunlight that hits them, emphasizing the space’s vitality during the day and its intimacy during the night. Stained oak was used in these walls and elsewhere throughout the ship: “We wanted to create an environment that nods towards the shipbuilding of the past, but without using rare tree species,” says Eland.

At the end of the dining room is a divider that rises up halfway to the ceiling, separating the space from the workstation, a wide desk featuring built-in recessions for keeping your utensils and objects safe from rolling away when the ship sways. The half-size of the divider, which matches the dark wood panels of the walls, finds a compromise between dividing the spaces and leaving the flow of the hull open, and thus more spacious.

Y9 by YYachts and Norm Architects Bedroom

There is one area sequestered away from the rest of the hull for privacy: the master bedroom, present in the bow of the ship through a dark wooden doorway. Inside, the bed and cabinets are upholstered in a light suede to contrast against the dark woods of the walls and floors. Through another sliding wood-panelled door that’s camouflaged into the wall is the bathroom, with elegant slate-grey sinks and black hardware.

Norm Architects’ ethos is to “create spaces for the senses that are human-centric,” and the Y9 is no exception. The uncluttered, simplistic-yet-luxurious design is lush with beautiful tactile materials and permeated by a visceral feeling of warmth and naturalness.

“The yacht is created for people,” says Eland. “And we wanted to give them a unique — and spacious — experience. To evoke the same feeling as in a residential or hospitality setting.”

Y9 : Small series flagship from YYachts with easy handling

Martin Hager

 ·  12.03.2023

"Bella" on the wind: Thanks to push-button steering and a self-tacking jib, the 6.80 metre wide carbon slup can also be sailed with a small crew

Since the shipyard was founded in 2015, YYachts models have been characterised by their ease of use - "Keep it simple" is not the credo of the boat builders led by Michael Schmidt for nothing. The lightweight carbon construction and long bowsprit show that the Y9 is also designed for sailing performance. The 55-tonner has 430 square metres of sail upwind and up to 859 square metres downwind with a gennaker from the Italian Zaoli loft. During the passage from the Ladebow shipyard on the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean, the "Bella" captain logged 26 knots top speed and a distance of 240 nautical miles. Even an experienced skipper would go into raptures.

Comfort on board the Y9 not restricted

As on the Y7, two people on deck should be enough, thanks to the push-button control of the sail systems and the fact that manoeuvring stress is avoided thanks to the self-tacking jib and a mainsail that can be sailed without backstays thanks to the narrow top. In addition, the cockpit is free of the mainsheet, which is attached to the fixed bimini between solar panels - true to the YYachts philosophy: a yacht must be reduced to the essentials without compromising comfort. The mainsheet solution has another advantage: the owner's family and their guests can move around in the cosy cockpit, which is completely shaded thanks to the fixed bimini, outside the danger zone, as the 242-square-metre main can exert heavy loads on the rigging depending on the wind force and the course steered.

"Bella" is the first representative of a new small series, a 90-foot single-unit construction laid with "Prevail" in Ladebow as early as 2021. The Y9 also relies on lines by Bill Tripp, easily recognisable by the striking deckhouse. According to YYachts Managing Director Dirk Zademack, the creation of the new flagship model is the result of several discussions with owners:

The customers were actually interested in a length of 100 feet. However, in my experience, yachts above this size become disproportionately expensive because many customised products have to be installed. With our expertise, we have therefore realised the comfort of a 100-foot yacht in a length of 90 feet."

The "Bella" owner, whom Michael Schmidt and his team have known well for four years, was also convinced of this. He was one of the first Y7 owners and was quickly impressed by the ease of use and outstanding sailing characteristics of his first "Bella". Just a few months after taking delivery and during the BOOTE EXCLUSIV test sail off Palma de Mallorca at the time, he was already thinking about switching to a larger YYachts model when it became available. Now the XL "Bella" is afloat and the owner is happy. Over the past four years, he has fully embraced the sailing lifestyle and seems to have completely forgotten his past as the owner of a 73-foot motor yacht. "Michael Schmidt's yachts opened my eyes and showed me that sailing is many times more comfortable than travelling with motor yachts. There are good reasons why motorboats no longer leave the harbour from a wind force of 4 Beaufort," the "Bella" owner told us at the time, smiling and satisfied at the wheel of his Y7.

In comparison: Y9 and Y7

Just how much larger the Y9 is compared to the 8.03 metre shorter Y7 can be seen above all in the wide and glidingly flat stern section, in which the dinghy parks transversely and from above. Behind the steering positions with carbon wheels, under a wide hatch that opens by means of hydraulic Reckmann cylinders, there is a watertight bay that is constructed like a crash box. This is where the tender is stored. On "Bella", this is a Y tender for the first time, a 4.35 metre rib with a carbon catamaran hull, which is powered conventionally via outboard motor or electrically and weighs just 230 kilograms. The air hose fills and empties via integrated pumps in just 45 seconds, reducing the width by 30 centimetres when empty. The water is supplied by a compact carbon fibre davit crane, which can be installed on deck in a few simple steps if required. The spacious parking bay also has space for surfboards, SUPs or diving equipment. There are good reasons for dispensing with a tender garage that is accessible via the transom, as shipyard founder Michael Schmidt explains: "I didn't want a garage that was accessible via the stern on the Y7," explains Schmidt. "Even if the lazarette is really well sealed, you always have moisture in there."

The interior of the "Bella"

The interior starts in front of the watertight bulkhead, in the case of "Bella" with the crew area. Here there are two cabins for up to four people and a cosy and functional mess area with on-board electronics panels opposite, multifunctional displays and the usual communication equipment. The "Bella" owner usually opts for a crew of two, who benefit accordingly from the generously proportioned area. The galley is located to starboard, where the owner himself also likes to wield the wooden spoon. The crew then keep to themselves aft, with a door separating the areas from each other to ensure privacy. Opposite is one of two guest cabins, which has a double bed and a large bathroom with shower. Adjacent to the short corridor leading into the saloon, designer Bill Tripp has placed the hatch in the easily accessible engine room, where a Volvo Penta D4 engine serves as the main engine alongside the fresh water treatment system and a Fischer Panda generator with 20 kilowatts of power.

Owner's reach ahead: past the office niche and into the master suite

The layout of the saloon, which is a few steps higher, is particularly successful. There is a dining table for eight people on the starboard side, while the adjacent aft wall panel inconspicuously hides storage compartments and a wine refrigerator, which the owner wanted here. The seating area opposite with a large day bed, side table and two armchairs serves as an entertainment area. A Samsung TV integrated into the forward transverse bulkhead functions as a colourful work of art in "Frame" mode and otherwise, of course, as a TV with the usual access to Netflix & Co. Handrails can be found everywhere on board - as befits a real sailing yacht - on the ceiling of the saloon in a clever and proven design à la Michael Schmidt: two leather holding loops are attached to two metal rails that extend almost the entire length of the saloon, the shape of which is reminiscent of ceiling loops from buses and trains. The saloon flows seamlessly into a cosy lounge alcove on the starboard side, which offers a workstation and a television opposite the sofa. Guest cabin number two is on the port side, also with a double bed and bathroom including shower.

Five layout options possible

YYachts offers a total of five layout options for the Y9, three of which are based on an aft owner's suite. The "Bella" owner, on the other hand, wanted his realm in the bow. Here he will find a walk-in wardrobe, plenty of storage space in surrounding sideboards, a large bathroom at the very front and a free-standing queen-size bed. Naturally, there are also details here that indicate the seaworthiness of every Y9. There are brackets for leeches above the bed, and handrails are concealed in the surrounding furniture. Like everywhere else on board, the doors of the shelves can be opened using a thin leather strap - a smart detail that again goes back to the creative mind of Michael Schmidt, who knows exactly how he wants his boats to look. Five large windows on each side of the hull plus the all-round windows of the deckhouse, which also provide a good view of the horizon, ensure that there is plenty of light throughout the interior.

Here too, oiled and smoked oak wood dominates, with light-coloured leather adorning the furniture fronts

As with his Y7, the owner opted for an interior developed by Norm Architects from Copenhagen and Design Unlimited from Lymington for the first Y9. The two design studios created a Scandinavian-elegant look that follows the principle of "soft minimalism"; smoked and oiled oak, grey fabrics and light-coloured wall panels define the colour palette. Katrine Goldstein, Managing Director of Norm Architects, summarises: "The Y9 follows the design of the award-winning Y7, but is much more complex. It is a comfortable and tranquil retreat to unwind from the constant stimuli of everyday life." After all, that should be the goal of every yacht.

YYachts España - Yates de carbono

YYachts Y9 Carbon Yacht Create your own superyacht.

Our Y9 is as unique as itself. Above all, he is as individual as each of his clients, because his structure and equipment are completely variable. In addition, the Y9 sailboat offers the volume of a 100-foot boat in only 90. Likewise, it is available in 3 versions, the Y9, the Y9 Pilot House and the Y9 Custom.

The main objective of the Y9 owners is to spend time with family and friends on board. As a result, the 90-foot carbon sailboat is an easy boat to sail, even with a short crew. Her interior design meets and exceeds the owner’s desire to have a family boat with enough privacy while cruising the world. Of course, the Y9 carbon yacht also demonstrates its potential on the Mediterranean or Caribbean racing courses, sailing on the front line of the race and being a formidable opponent.

Like all YYachts sailboats, the Y9 yacht follows the clear design philosophy of reducing all superstructure and unnecessary components, creating a clean and minimalist deck: Keep it simple, look good and sail nicely.

Advantages of the Y9 yacht

Easy handling.

On the Y9 yacht all halyards and sheets run hidden towards the steering positions, so that the helmsman can steer the Y9 yacht alone at any time.

Proven technology

YYachts only uses components that have been tested hundreds of times. Days lost due to vulnerable technology are unacceptable on this luxury 90-foot carbon yacht.

Effortless luxury

Our yachts provide you and your family with a worry-free experience. The Y9 yacht takes advantage of YYachts’ learning from the Y7 and Y8 and takes the whole thing to the highest level.

Lightweight construction

Using carbon fiber and lightweight construction materials on the interior, YYACHTS yachts achieve a high displacement/sail area ratio.

Variable interior design and layout.

Thanks to our modular construction, the layout can be adapted cost-free to the owner’s wishes. For example, the forward and aft living areas can be divided below deck, or the number of guest cabins can be chosen (up to 4).

YYacht Y9 exterior

The exterior of the Y9, designed by Bill Tripp, is characterized by elegant lines. Its sail area of more than 1,000m2 allows it to reach speeds of 26 knots and a spacious cabin but with short distances in the command stations guarantees fun sailing.

Interior layout.

The spaciousness of a 100 foot sailboat has been achieved in a 90 foot boat by implementing many years of design and construction experience – The owner has the maximum level of privacy in his own loft depending on the configuration. Likewise, it can have up to three guest cabins. Furthermore, great importance has been given to the design of the crew area, following an unwritten rule in yachting, “Happy crew, happy owner”. There are several layout options available for the Y9 in addition to numerous optional interior furnishings. The YYachts team will work with each owner to customize the interior; Likewise, you can select your own interior designer for the project.

Y9 // Y Yachts // Bill Tripp // Andrew Winch

The y9 was announced last year with other interior designers , now the bill tripp design comes up with an andrew winch interior.

The performance-oriented Tripp 90/Y9 is part of the YYachts’ Custom Division and has been created to compete on regattas and comfortable cruises. A crew of three persons can sail the 30-meter yacht. A lot of weight is saved by using carbon fiber for the hull, deck, and rigging. It is not the first collaboration between YYachts and Bill Tripp: He also designed the sailing yacht model Y7 / Bella .

Unfortunately, there are no interior pictures at the time of publication, but Bill Tripp comments the Andrew Winch interior design: “Onboard, you feel like you’re in a luxury hotel. A fantastic job”.

The shipyard describes the interior design as follows: “ The spacious interior is minimalist and open-plan, benefiting from plenty of natural light. Drawing stylistic inspiration from the U.S. East Coast and mid-century Scandinavian influences, as well as soft leather and light oak wood, the ambiance exudes understated elegance.”

German sailing yacht builders  YYachts  have delivered the first unit in its Y9 sailing yacht series. The yard's new 30m flagship  Bella  features design and naval architecture by Bill Tripp while the interior draws stylistic inspiration from the U.S. East Coast and mid-century Scandinavian influences.

y yachts y9

YYachts abide by a single mantra - The simpler the boat, the purer the sailing experience, and the greater the pleasure. For this reason, their yachts are made to emphasize the essentials of sailing - easy handling, alone (if possible), anywhere in the world. The aim is really to use the best technology available to simplify and put the joy back into the hobby of sailing.

Bella features a hydrogeneration package from Oceanvolt capable of generating 1kW at 10knots of speed , as well as a hard top bimini which is noticeably covered by 14 square metres of solar panels and an extensive battery package. These features allow the boat to generate fossil fuel free energy both when sailing and moored.

With regards to the performance of the yacht, Bella is equipped with twin Volvo engines and its main sail alone is roughly 242 square metres, the total sail area totals over 1000 square metres. Reports have revealed that on the yacht's maiden voyage, from Greifswald to Cannes, speeds of up 26 knots have already been clocked. Bella completed the journey from The Baltic Sea to The Mediterranean in less than 11 days.

Technology used in the YYachts Y9 sailboat :

  • LOA: 29.71 m
  • Boat beam: 6.8 m
  • Displacement: 55 000 kg
  • Hydrogenerator: Oceanvolt ServoProp 15 (capable of generating 1kW at 10knots of speed)

YYachts delivers flagship Y9 sailing yacht Bella

German builder YYachts has delivered the first unit in its Y9 sailing yacht series named Bella . The yard's new flagship features design and naval architecture by Bill Tripp and measures 29.71 metres in length, eclipsing its former flagship, Prevail , by 2.3 metres.

Bella is a performance cruiser built entirely in carbon fibre, and has been carefully designed to sail with as little as two crew. Sail and rig settings are adjusted at the push of a button for maximum operational efficiency, while the mainsheet is centred on the bimini top and kept out of sight within the Park Avenue main boom, keeping the social cockpit below clear of lines. A secondary cockpit and helm station are positioned further aft.

Her maiden voyage from Greifswald to Cannes saw the sloop and its four crew test the mettle of its 242-square-metre main sail together with a 617-square-metre gennaker. On the passage, Bella reached a top speed of 26 knots.

One of the most innovative design features of the Y9 is a tender garage that sits transversely across the stern, providing additional room for the private owner's apartment, comfortable guest cabins and a generous crew area. The garage on board Bella houses a carbon composite YTender catamaran.

The yacht's interior design comes as a collaboration between Scandinavian firms Norm Architects and Design Unlimited under the principle of "soft minimalism", evident in the yacht's oiled oak and grey fabrics and panels featured throughout. Katrine Goldstein, managing director of Norm Architects, noted the studio's vision of a pared-back interior, with special attention given to the sliding doors and inbuilt storage space so that it would "effortlessly blend in" with the vessel's architectural framework.

Bella comes with a hydro generation package sourced from Oceanvolt, a hard top bimini covered with 14 square metres of solar panels and an extensive battery package meaning the yacht is able to generate renewable power either being moored or underway. Equally important to the yacht's onboard features was the level of sound absorption, leading the yard to consult with noise specialists for an especially "quiet yacht".

Ultimately, the project is meant to expand the offerings of a sailing vessel to a growing number of prospective customers. According to Tripp, this meant developing a "high-end series" to be not only "appealing", but also "obtainable" in order to "attract new people to the sport and to tug people out of powerboats into something far more interesting".

The Y9 comes in three versions: the standard version, the pilot saloon version and a custom version with an almost unlimited range of design options.

Bella joins YYachts' existing lineup of Y7 and Y8 series of sailing yachts, as well as its custom division, which previously delivered the 27.4 metre Prevail that was selected as a finalist in this year's BOAT International Design and Innovation Awards .

Look good and sail nicely.“

y yachts y9

UNERMESSLICHE FREUDE AN BORD
