Florida is home to more registered yachts than almost any other state, so it goes without saying that South Florida is one of the world’s leading destinations for yacht refits and yacht repairs. At Tess, our Fort Lauderdale yacht refit services are designed with one goal in mind — to provide you with a yacht that you’ll enjoy for years to come. Yacht Refit Services

Unlike smaller recreational boats, Super Yachts require a great deal of specialized maintenance and service. Regardless of whether your yacht needs routine maintenance and repair or if you’re looking for an entire systems overhaul, a yacht refit can extend the life of your vessel for many years.

When you’re considering yacht refit companies, it’s important that you work with a team that is experienced in everything from marine electrical refits to marine engineering and everything in between.

Tess Electrical LLC has provided marine electrical and engineering services as well as yacht retrofit services in South Florida for more than 35 years. As a more specialized electrical contractor, Tess can facilitate yacht refits of any scope—from electrical system overhauls to interior updates, as well as total yacht renovations.

When Should You Retrofit Your Yacht?

There comes a point for many yacht owners on whether to renovate their yacht or trade it in for a new yacht. In many cases, a refit is a better choice than selling the vessel and does add value to the yacht if it stays within class. With a refit, you can customize your yacht to look and operate precisely to your desired specifications.

Refitting has been on the rise in recent years as more owners seek to refit their existing vessels. Also, an increasing number of people are buying used yachts because it’s less expensive to refurbish an older ship than to buy a new one in some cases.

A refit typically involves significant electrical, structural, and mechanical work. Many yacht owners schedule a refit every five years to coincide with the survey and recertification process that most insurers require.

marine electrical projects

What Marine Electrical Components Are Addressed in a Yacht Refit?

Tess specializes in electrical system refits, repairs, and installation. Every yacht has a complex electrical system made up of lights, monitors, breakers, relays, alarms, and so much more. The company’s marine electricians and engineers use the latest technology and equipment to inspect and test voltage, amperage, and resistance.

Based on this expert evaluation, the Tess team will give you advice on repairing or upgrading electrical systems. Making relatively small changes can improve your yachting experience. For example, retrofitting internal and external lights with LED lighting can reduce energy demands and minimize future lighting maintenance. This can also improve overall safety on board by reducing the risk of fires.

A marine environment can erode the highest-quality electrical system. As part of the retrofit process, Tess uses Megger testing (also called insulation resistance testing) to gauge how well the yacht’s electrical systems can resist current flow. This test helps Tess target areas that need an upgrade.

The most common electronics upgrades include:

  • AIS (Automatic Identification System)
  • Depth sounder (sonar)
  • Internet/WiFi

Tess Electrical offers repair, maintenance, and retrofitting for yachts of any size. The marine service industry highly respects the company’s electrical and engineering knowledge and expertise. The Tess team has experience in everything from detailed mechanical drawings of retrofit concept plans to custom designing lighting and monitoring systems, ensuring that each yacht retrofit service comes together perfectly.

Tess Electric can extend the life of your yacht — and improve its overall safety — with a retrofit. It provides AutoCAD design for any electrical project. The company specializes in the design, installation, repair, and maintenance of:

  • Yacht alarm systems
  • Power systems
  • Entertainment and AV systems
  • Wiring and electrical fixtures and appliances
  • Switchboards and control panels
  • Load banks and shore converters

What Is the Process To Refit a Yacht?

A marine environment can age a yacht’s systems quickly with the harsh environment they operate in.. A complete refit is an excellent way to repair, replace, and upgrade systems at once rather than waiting for them to fail sporadically. Refits vary depending on the yacht’s size and age, budget, necessary repairs, and the owner’s customization choices.

Initial Survey

A marine survey is the first step in most refits. Conducting a yacht survey helps determine what repairs and upgrades are necessary and makes refits easier to plan and budget. You should always have a trained professional perform the survey to detect damage and potential issues that a non-expert could overlook.

In most cases, survey experts like Tess will thoroughly inspect the yacht’s systems, structure, and propulsion. The professionals at Tess perform comprehensive assessments of your yacht, including:

  • Topside, tank, and underwater coatings
  • Class and flag regulations
  • Interior appliances and devices

Following a survey, Tess works closely with the yacht owner to create a project plan, design concepts, and work scope. Tess will appoint a project manager to handle each stage of the project. They will coordinate everything, including hiring subcontractors wherever necessary.

Yacht Refit Cost

The cost of renovating a yacht varies greatly, but a survey will help you get a renovation estimate. If you own a superyacht (over 120 feet in length), a thorough retrofit can cost between $300,000 to $1 million. A retrofit of a 60-foot personal yacht costs between $60,000 and $250,000.

How Long Do Yacht Retrofits Take?

One of the benefits of a retrofit is that it can take half the time of waiting for the delivery of a new yacht. Again, estimates vary depending on the vessel’s size and the renovation, but most refits take between a few weeks to a few months.

Types of Yacht Upgrades

Along with electrical and mechanical upgrades, many refits include cosmetic changes to the yacht. Some of the most common interior upgrades include:

  • AV system: Advances in technology call for upgrades to the internet, audiovisual , and sound  systems
  • Electrical Systems: One of the most important things we do for a yacht retrofit is to replace part or all of the existing electrical system for safety and efficiency purposes.
  • Power Management Systems: Replace or upgrade the yachts existing power management systems
  • Alarm Monitoring Systems: Alarm, monitoring, and control are vital functions on marine vessels. TESS develops and implements these systems, as well remote platform performance monitoring.

Derecktor Shipyards - Since 1947

It was 1947 when Bob Derecktor began with a simple plan and a small shop in Mamaroneck, NY. His goal: build boats the equal of any in the world, and do it without compromise.

Today, the record says he and the yards he founded have done just that. Notable vessels ranging from America's Cup winners to massive mega-yachts to rugged Coast Guard cutters have come from Derecktor.

Just as  remarkable is the way the business has evolved. That first shop has grown to three full-service facilities ranging the length of the East Coast, and a fourth currently coming online in Fort Pierce, Florida. And, while still among the world's best builders and still a family business, today we offer customers a variety of benefits from complex refits to destination marinas.

What has not changed is a driving determination to do it right. Which is why when most American boatbuilders that were around all those years ago are now but distant memories, Derecktor is thriving. And still right on course.

Complete Refits & Restoration

Complete Refits & Restoration

Modernize, revitalize, and customize your boat with a complete refit.

With turnkey services and a state-of-the-art marine facility, Yacht Management can accommodate a variety of custom yacht services. Some of these services include interior and exterior refits, entertainment systems, mechanical systems, marine electrical and marine electronics.

There are two types of boat owners who contract yacht refits:

  • Yacht owners who love their vessel and want to upgrade their finishings.
  • Yacht buyers that have purchased a used yacht and would like to refurbish their vessel.

Whether you fall into yacht fit category one or two, Yacht Management of South Florida can help make the refit and restoration process stress-free. Once you have decided to undergo a complete yacht refit and restoration, our team will work with you to create an organized list to plan your project. Our yacht management group works closely with several reputable naval architects that can bring your vision to life. With the collaboration of CAD drawings, your restoration concerns can be turned into obtainable projects with minimal down time. One tip to keep in mind when shopping for yacht restoration prices is to focus on more than just the cost of the restoration. Reputation should play a factor in your decision making process for who to choose for your yacht refit. Sometimes, a price difference of 2%-7% could result in a substantial improvement in your yacht renovations.

Coal Blooded, Mangunsta 80'

This recent REFIT project completed at Yacht Management Service Center on an 80' Mangusta required consideration of every detail. The owners wanted to modernize the vessel, which included metallic paint work, complete interior overhaul, electronics upgrades including re-wiring to accommodate for LED lighting and major engine and generator service.

Exclusive Yacht Faux Teak Flooring Providers

yacht refit florida

We proudly offer, and are the exclusive provider for the most realistic Faux Teak we have ever used! I have literally stood on this material and have not been able to tell that it is Faux Teak. We offer complete Faux teak yacht flooring Installations, repair, and servicing.

Faux Teak is a popular choice for yacht exterior surfaces due to several key advantages:

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Faux teak mimics the look of natural teak wood, which is a very popular look for yacht owners. It offers the same classic, luxurious appearance. It can enhance the yacht’s aesthetic while maintaining the traditional nautical style.
  • Low Maintenance: Unlike natural teak, faux teak requires minimal upkeep. It does not need regular sanding, oiling, or sealing. Cleaning is easy and involves just a quick rinse or wash with soap and water.
  • Durability and Longevity: Faux teak is resistant to UV rays, saltwater, and other harsh marine conditions. It doesn’t crack, warp, or fade as natural teak can over time, ensuring it looks good for many years.
  • Non-Slip Surface: Safety is a major concern on yachts, and faux teak offers excellent grip, even when wet. The textured surface provides a non-slip finish, reducing the risk of slips and falls.
  • Cost-Effective: Faux teak is generally more affordable than natural teak. While it delivers a similar visual appeal, it comes at a fraction of the cost.
  • Eco-Friendly: Using faux teak avoids the need for harvesting natural teak wood, which helps preserve tropical forests and supports sustainable practices.
  • Customization Options: Faux teak flooring is available in a variety of colors, grain patterns, and design layouts, allowing yacht owners to personalize their decks according to their preferences.

Faux teak flooring combines the look of traditional teak with the benefits of modern materials, making it an exceptional choice for yacht exterior surfaces.

Custom Yacht Interior Designs

Yacht Refit – Restoring Luster to a Pedigree Sportfish

yacht refit florida

Whether a yacht design project involves conceptualizing the layout of a new superyacht or bringing an older vessel up to today’s standards with a yacht refit, each yacht has a story to tell. As a designer, refitting a forgotten gem can be the most rewarding experience, particularly when the boat carries a strong pedigree or classic detailing that can be lovingly enhanced.

Such was the case aboard the 61’ Tribute Sportfish, a true “gentleman’s yacht”. This was not a yacht that remained in the marina, only to be visited occasionally by its owner, rather a vessel that was enjoyed thoroughly for its intended purpose – which was to be out on the water, soaking up the sun, and filled with guests enjoying themselves while fishing and socializing.

yacht refit florida

These years of fun in the sun were apparent. The rich cherry wood that graced the interior had become faded, yellowed and uneven. Veneers that once enhanced the luxurious look were chipped, cracked and lifting in parts. The seams between the flitches of veneer on the walls had opened and the wooden planks in the flooring were shifting and separating.

Yacht Interior Refit Before

In addition to the apparent wear and tear, the interior showed its age in decor. The yacht had been fitted with halogen lighting – the preferred lighting at the time of build – and accented with emerald green carpeting, deep green stone, and dark, heavily textured wallpaper and headliner.

Yacht Refit

The brief was simple yet complex: maintain the stately charm of the vessel, whose owner planned to continue entertaining high profile friends and business associates on fishing excursions, while updating the interior to the latest standards.

Yacht Refit

We set about restoring the lost luster of the beautiful cherry wood throughout and gave new life to every inch of the walls, flooring, and cabinetry. We replaced the dark, heavily textured wallpaper with a lighter wall covering offering a slight shimmer that subtly brightens smaller spaces onboard, such as the lower deck cabins. The stone tops throughout were polished to their original luster and the outdated appliances were replaced and the Galley cabinetry modified to account for the new appliance dimensions.

Yacht Interior Refit

Yacht refits are not only about updating the decor, however, and in almost every refit I encounter the opportunity to improve upon the original design. Aboard the Tribute, the cushions of the built-in settees in the salon were upholstered into ¾” plywood, which made them very heavy and bulky. This made accessing the fishing gear – which was stowed within the settees and accessed often on this active yacht – an arduous task for the Captain. So, we rebuilt these using a much lighter board, repaired the wood bases and replaced all of the cushions with high-end waterproof leather for lasting beauty and durability.

Yacht Refit

Lighting has such an impact on a space and upgrading the lighting throughout to LED for efficiency and improved color temperature made a great difference. I highly recommend testing the color temperature (you can do this by comparing old and new lights in a dark space) before installing new lighting.

We rebuilt and reupholstered all of the interior and exterior settees and replaced the headliners. Fresh carpeting and new soft goods punctuated the appealing new look. Here we were able to maintain and accent the yacht’s original interior colors, as earth tones are once again en vogue. We kept the foundation neutral throughout and added sophisticated accents of green and caramel and rich focal elements on the main deck for a smart, clean-lined aesthetic. Despite being a smaller space, the dark green doesn’t overwhelm the room, but rather makes the otherwise simple area more dynamic and interesting. In the yacht’s guest areas, layers of grays and soft blue tones create a relaxing retreat and complement the earth tones on the main deck to round out a serenely cohesive space.

Yacht Interior Refit

Soon this green-hulled beauty will be sailing off into the sunset, while her guests enjoy cocktails, fishing, and networking in style.

U.s. coast guard cuts mh-60t jayhawk service life, grounds helicopters.

The Coast Guard's Jayhawk Fleet Is In Trouble

In a surprise move, the U.S. Coast Guard abruptly cut the service life of their MH-60T Jayhawk Medium Range Recovery Helicopters from 20,000 hours to 19,000. As a result, six high-hour aircraft were immediately grounded, taken out of service in mid-August. If the Jayhawk’s service-life adjustment is permanent, the Coast Guard’s already stressed helicopter fleet will soon face serious operational challenges.

The Coast Guard, in a statement, confirmed the helicopters were taken out of service, saying that it “anticipates no immediate impacts on search and rescue capabilities.” But with the Coast Guard’s helicopter air wing already stretched to the breaking point, grounding any fraction of the Coast Guard’s current fleet of around 48 Sikorsky-built MH-60T helicopters poses a serious problem for the Coast Guard.

With emergency conversations still ongoing between the Coast Guard and Sikorsky, the flight hour cut may prove to be a temporary safety “hold.” But, if the 19,000-hour service life is not quickly adjusted back upward, returning to the original 20,000-hour target, the Coast Guard risks running out of operable MH-60T airframes at a time when the Service needs them most.

With an aging, bare-bones air wing, the Coast Guard has few options. By late 2023, over 90 percent of the Coast Guard’s fleet of MH-60T helicopters were operating with over 16,000 flight hours. Each Jayhawk chalks up somewhere around 800 flight hours a year—and with the remaining still-flyable airframes expected to operate more, filling in for the already-grounded helicopters—the Coast Guard’s high-hour MH-60T fleet will deplete itself in a big hurry. The Coast Guard’s only other helicopter, the aging and far smaller MH-65 Dolphin, is getting phased out, so there’s no backup for the beleaguered Service.

To recover, the Coast Guard may be forced to adjust their long-planned, penny-pinching effort to rebuild their existing high-hour MH-60T aircraft.

Apple iPhone 16 And iPhone 16 Plus: Everything We Know So Far

Secret service puts $2.5 million bounty on most wanted hacker’s head, election 2024 swing state polls: harris leads or ties trump in all battleground states, latest survey finds.

As a chronically underfunded agency , the Coast Guard has, for years, touted a low-cost plan to run their MH-60T aircraft for 20,000 hours, gradually rebuilding each high-hour MH-60T helicopter, enabling the aircraft to run for thousands of additional hours. But now, with the surprise cut in service life, the Coast Guard’s convoluted and penny-pinching Jayhawk recapitalization effort—a necessity to keep from busting the Coast Guard’s miniscule $13.8 billion budget—may be broken as well.

The Coast Guard needs robust all-weather helicopters

Hard-Used Fleet Shows Signs Of Strain:

The Coast Guard’s MH-60T helicopter fleet sees intensive use, and they are very reliable. However, over the past few years, the Coast Guard’s normally robust MH-60Ts have been showing signs of operational strain. In November 2023, a MH-60T crashed in Alaska while responding to a distress call from a fishing boat . Seven months later, in June, a different Coast Guard MH-60T helicopter suffered transmission issues and was forced to make an emergency landing West of Orlando, Florida.

While there is no indication that the abrupt service life cut is linked to the recent MH-60T mishaps, the surprise service life reduction is a sign that the Coast Guard, in their effort to save cash, is pushing their MH-60Ts to the brink. As Sikorsky’s long-held engineering models get tested by the Coast Guard’s unprecedented operational flight hour expectations, the helicopters can encounter new risks and experience otherwise unprecedented failures. The abrupt grounding may be an indication that something in the older, hard-run aircraft is threatening to break.

Put bluntly, funding constraints are pushing both the Coast Guard and Sikorsky into uncharted territory. Better-funded government agencies replace their H-60 helicopters far more often. The Navy, in 2003, celebrated extending the service lives of their H-60-based Seahawk fleet to 12,000 flight hours , up from 10,000. And, today, the Coast Guard, to save costs, is taking those Navy cast-offs and rebuilding them as MH-60Ts, fully expecting to run them for at least 8,000 more hours.

That plan may no longer work. Permanently reducing the MH-60T service life by 1,000 hours upends the Coast Guard’s delicately-balanced fiscal calculus, and may force the Coast Guard to buy new MH-60T hulls (a newly-manufactured “nose, cabin and aft transition structure”) from Sikorsky.

Even that step might not work, as the Coast Guard is also balancing industrial base constraints. Again, to save cost, high-hour Coast Guard MH-60Ts are being rebuilt around “fresh” hulls at the Coast Guard’s Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The aging facility—a former seaplane base—can only refit so many helicopters at a time and has very little capacity to accelerate the complex rebuilding efforts. With delays in the refit effort likely, Coast Guard leaders probably counted on Sikorsky to grant waivers, allowing the Coast Guard to operate the hard-used choppers beyond the already high 20,000 hour limit.

Of course, there’s an open question as to why the Coast Guard is going through such lengths to keep their aging helicopters in the air at all.

There’s no plan. The Coast Guard’s long-term rotary wing recapitalization effort is in complete disarray. Once pegged to the Army’s Future Vertical Lift Program, the Coast Guard was caught flat-footed after the Army picked the Bell V-280 Valor . That complex tilt-rotor platform is unlikely to meet the Coast Guard’s demanding rotary wing requirements, and, outside of new MH-60Ts, the Coast Guard has few viable options for the future.

With Polar Operations , hurricane response and other rotary-wing intensive tasks looming, it may well be time for Congress to read both the Administration and the Coast Guard the riot act, forcing the Department of Homeland Security to order enough newly-built MH-60T Jayhawks to fully refresh the Coast Guard’s stressed rotary wing force. The Coast Guard’s helicopters are vital, life-saving tools, and, rather than love them to death, it may be time to buy the penurious Service a new fleet of Jayhawk helicopters before the Blackhawk production line closes for good.
