AZIMUT YACHTS is an Italian yacht-manufacturing company located in Avigliana. Established in 1969 by Paolo Vitelli, Azimut began with chartering sailing boats, a service they still provide today. Paolo Vitelli purchased Benetti in 1984, making Azimut the owner of the Benetti shipyard, another impressive yard building luxury yachts. Azimut has five series classes for yachts ranging between 34′ up to 120′ (10.36m up to 36.5m). The yard in the province of Turin is a 1,076,391 square foot (100,000 square meter) facility with the capability to produce up to 300 boats annually that are 69′ (21m) in length. Custom yachts of a larger size are ordered from other, larger shipyards throughout the world. Azimut’s commitment to provide beauty, style, elegance, and comfort is why they continue to be one of the world’s leaders in the luxury yacht industry today.

Azimut Reviews

Azimut Yachts is one of the foremost Italian boatbuilders, based at a state-of-the-art 100,000 square metre facility in Avigliana, less than 20 miles west of Turin, which can produce up to 300 boats per year and has built more than 10,000 hulls to date.

Founded in Italy in 1969 by Paolo Vitelli, originally as a charter company for sailboats, Azimut Yachts quickly expanded in the 1970s with the launch of its first fibreglass boat design, the AZ 43 Bali, which was built as part of a joint venture with Dutch yard Ameriglass. This was followed up in 1977 by the AZ 32 Targa, which Azimut describes as ‘the Ford Model T of the boat world’.

The next decade saw the company launch the world’s largest mass-produced fiberglass yacht, the 30 metre Azimut 105 Failaka in 1982. Built for a Kuwaiti prince, this yacht also made waves on the other side of the Atlantic and paved the way for Azimut to break into the lucrative US market with its first appearance at the Miami Yacht Show.

A major milestone came in 1985, when Azimut acquired the historic Benetti shipyard and created the Azimut-Benetti Group, which went on to take the title of the world’s largest superyacht builder in the early 21 st century. This came on the back of significant expansion in the 1990s, with new sites in Fano and Avigliana, as well as the restructuring of Benetti’s Viareggio headquarters. New models to splash in the 1990s included the AZ54, with its distinctive eye-shaped side windows – a motif that endured for more than a decade after its launch. More recently, the Gobbi yard was acquired in 2001 and its Atlantis sister brand was merged into the core Azimut portfolio in 2013.

Design and innovation

Azimut has pioneered several key yachting trends over the years, such as large frameless windows, electric seats and walnut wood interiors. As well as using the latest manufacturing techniques to ensure high-quality results, Azimut also prides itself on incorporating the finest hand craftsmanship in its interior detailing, to ensure that exclusive ‘Made in Italy’ feel.

Over the years, the yard has worked with several designers from all across the world, from the British naval architect Michael Peters to the Dutch supremo Cor D Rover, but the classic Azimut combination sees sporty Stefano Righini exterior lines offset by a sumptuous Carlo Galeazzi interior design. The company’s slogan ‘Fino all’ultimo dettaglio’ means ‘To the last detail’, while its yachts aim to evoke the timeless Italian tradition of living La Dolce Vita.

The Azimut range

The current Azimut collection includes the entry-level Verve dayboats, the semi-planing Magellano trawler models (launched in 2008) and the signature flybridge range, all the way up to the Grande superyacht line. The Azimut Yachts flagship, the Grande 35, measures in at an imposing 35 metres and is notable for its extensive use of structural carbon fibre as well as a displacement to planing hull with a wave-piercing bow for added efficiency.

Environmental efforts

Keen to minimise its yachts’ impact on the delicate marine ecosystem, Azimut has pioneered a wide range of environmental initiatives. These include research into eco-friendly paints and resins, hybrid propulsion systems and even the possibility of harnessing nanotechnologies for antifouling.

Today, Azimut has a truly global presence, with 138 sites in more than 60 countries around the world, including Japan, Canada and Saudia Arabia. We continue our presentation with the first great motor yachts manufacturer from my both lists, and this is Azimut from Italy, again.

The Flybridge 40

It seems that Italians are great boat designers, and I’ve noticed that even other famous yacht builders, from all over the world, are employing Italian designers services or are linking themselves with some great Italian yacht designers. You see that I can’t keep myself from using the word great when it comes to Italian boat designers , and I’m usually very strict with compliments. As that is stated in the annals, Azimut was founded in 1969 by a student, as a sailing yachts charter firm. No longer than 1970, they were approached by some prestigious yacht brands to distribute their products in Italy and expanded tremendously.

In parallel, they started to design their own models, leading to creation of Azimut 105 Failaka which became in 1982, the biggest mass produced fiberglass yacht at the time. With such a record, the company acquired Benetti in 1985, not the reverse. Now, Benetti built boats since the year Emperor Franz Jozef opened the 5’th World Fair in Vienna, 1873, and had a shipyard in Viareggio.

Acquiring new shipyards in Fano, restructuring Benetti sites in Viareggio, building a new one in Avigliana, the company went on to become the foremost builder of yachts and megayachts, with sites new established in Turkey and Brazil. This is the website’s info, the one in Turkey I know personally, and they say there that they work with Azimut. Truth is that they have delivered at least one megayacht for Azimut, during the time, with an incredible manpower economy. The thing is that on a site like yachtcouncil.com you find “buy thousands of Azimut Yachts made in Turkey” as meta phrase, which I find comical.

But let me start with the range of models which makes Azimut a leader of the motoryacht market. The Flybridge with its 40, 43, 45, 48, 53, 60, 64, 70, 78, 82, 88, 95, and 100 Leonardo variations.

The following picture is the 82 in full speed, a model of more than 82′ as the name may have suggested, but of over 84′ which means 25.69 meters LOA. Equipped with 2 Caterpillar C32 main engines, each of 1725 HP, it develops a speed of 25 kn (max 29) which sends you to New York from Naples in seven days :).

It has four plus two cabins, meaning that your crew will stay comfortable! The price range is following the luxury. I found a Flybridge 82 built in 2009 with the incredible price of € 4,3 million. It is true one buy a five stars hotel with that kind of money, but with the hotel you can’t travel between Europe and America having even better conditions :).

The 100 Leonardo, “combines sportiness and elegance”, as they say on the site, which by the way, has visitors, is a 263,133 ranking at Alexa, the first yacht brand website I’ve seen so high.

A Leonardo 100 Flybridge has a speed superior to the 82, it is of 29 knots for cruising, has also four plus two cabins, at 30.75 meters and just € 6,5 millions. They have a video on the site, but it was with Lamborginis, tramp models and champagne, less with the model itself. It is obviously made for another class of people, but I find somehow the price justified. Thirty meters are also expensive to park, but doesn’t matter anymore. If you can have this, you shall need just two weeks of charter to cover the expenses, salaries and mooring. Or you need maybe more than that, but it’s again, all right.

From “S” collection, I choose to show you the bigger, the S 86. For details on any of the models presented, I strongly advice you to visit the site. Signor Vitelli’s team is composed of highly professionals, they have created a very friendly website for visitors. This explains the high ranking as well.

Not a great fan of Magellano, or whom they build two models, the 50 and the 74. Better pass with them. For the next chapter, they have created a site, another one, called Azimut Grande , made for the new brand, a really “great” one :), with five variations: the 100, 105, 116, 103 SL, and 120 SL.

The sales manager responsible for the territory that a client hails from, and who knows the client. An architect capable of interior design and also for consulting on changes of layout. A project manager who will take over responsibility of the build of the yacht. A fourth person, who might be involved if the client is very technical, is what we call the technical manager, who will be on hand to discuss technical changes such as different engines, changes to compartments, different tender launching systems – all the technical elements. It is obvious that the Azimut 120 SL is the gem on their crown. I’m going to continue posting about all the yachts on my both lists, no matter of what have been published on this blog, before. The posts with more yacht brands per post, were on blogspot. Something strange happened and I suddenly changed radically my options!

To end with the 120 SL and with Azimut for today, you have to know that this treasure has a LOA of 116 feet 5 inches (35.5 meters), a draft of 1.5 meters, a beam of 24 feet 6 inches (7.5 meters),the speed of 35 knots (max), 31 knots (cruise)an Engine group of 3 x 2400 Hp MTU 16v 2000 M93 drives – 2 Rolls Royce Kamewa Water Jets + 1 Rolls Royce Kamewa Booster, a fuel capacity of 4,774 gallons (18,000 liters). The fabulous price is still a mystery for me, but I found an estimate for an Azimut Grande 116 built in 2007: something over $ 10 million, broker price. This makes me feel that a new 120 SL will be around $ 16 mil, but I’ll find out soon. I haven’t had the patience to wait for answers from brokers, so I published the post, anyway :).

Avigliana, June 13 th , 2023 – Azimut|Benetti Group announces the creation of the  Azimut|Benetti Group Corporate Academy , a  business school  designed to train top  yacht industry professionals , with the dual aim of supporting the professional growth of its employees and of creating the roles most in demand in order to  generate new jobs .  An initiative aimed at enhancing the merit and professionalism of current and future employees, which has always engaged the company’s founder, Paolo Vitelli, and was strongly desired by Giovanna Vitelli in her first months as President of the Group.

The  Azimut|Benetti Group Corporate Academy  is the first in the yachting world to look at the industry as a whole, bringing a  holistic approach  to training and a teaching model that embraces  technical know-how and handcrafting expertise ,  managerial development  in addition to  education and guidance projects  set up in partnership with vocational training agencies, secondary education institutes and universities. It is an ambitious programme, based on sharing the values and skills that have put the Group at the top of the world ranking of superyacht producers for the last 23 years.

The training is structured in  four action areas : the  Shipyard Academy  and the  Executive Academy , which provide upskilling, reskilling and executive education for Group employees, the  Development & Career Path , split into multiple internal growth paths, and lastly  Education and Guidance  Projects for students. Underlying all this is an awareness of the opportunities offered today by the yacht industry and of the role the company plays in this  strategic segment for Italy :

According to  La Nautica in Cifre  ( Yachting Facts and Figures ), the study published by Italian yacht industry trade body  Confindustria Nautica  in September 2022, the sector contributed over €5 billion to Italian GDP in 2021, up 31.4% on 2020. Total employees rose 9.7%, with a peak of 14.7% in new builds.

The shipyard area is also the focus of the Shipyard Academy, which has been set up in partnership with Turin-based training organisation  Fondazione Casa di Carità Arti e Mestieri di Torino  as part of the Innovative and Sustainable Integrated Mobility Academy promoted by Regione Piemonte and launched officially on  June 5, 2023 . The courses – over  18,000 hours of training  – will promote a  culture of continuous improvement , valuing and strengthening the skills required by the company  in order to train highly specialised professionals  in the techniques of bodywork production, carpentry, outfitting, and mechanical and hydraulic assembly.

“The Shipyard Academy has been created to focus on ‘homo faber’ and the ability to create and build, celebrating both the craftsmanship that is an integral part of the production process and the great professionalism of our workforce, which has always been one of the company’s distinctive features,”  explained  Santi Carlino, Azimut|Benetti Group Chief People & ICT Officer .

Also beginning this summer are the courses offered by the  Executive Academy , designed to ensure the supervision, spread and development of the Group’s business culture by promoting the values of talent and professionalism. Receiving a total of more than 28,000 hours of training,  Azimut|Benetti Group managers will take part in leadership development programmes  designed to strengthen their skills in the areas of communication and listening, people management and decision making. The training path will also include classes that focus on specific requirements, such as the customer experience in the luxury industry.

Santi Carlino  added:  “The Executive Academy offers our managers specific training activities identified by needs analysis processes as essential to achieve our strategic change management and organisational development objectives. The programme aims to boost the skills needed to excel in business”.

The two Academies are the natural continuation of the process of learning corporate values and skills that begins with  onboarding and induction into the Group  and takes the form of the  professional growth plan  for employees, which is structured in corporate career steps.

The Azimut|Benetti Group Corporate Academy extends the  vocational education  project launched by the company to  attract young people to the yacht industry and facilitate their transition to the world of work . For a number of years, in fact, the Group has been working with  professional schools  to train specialists in the areas of carpentry, outfitting and bodywork, with  secondary education institutes  to implement skill adaptation strategies aimed at developing mechanical and naval study plans for training naval operators, with the  maritime technical college  to train young captains and crew, and with  higher education institutes  on activities ranging from the development of new technologies to induction and co-teaching.
