Troia Beaches

Tourist guide.

Troia, Portugal

Troia is a popular summer destination, but is never crowded (this photo was taken in July!).

A lthough officially outside the Lisbon coast (it’s in the Alentejo region), Troia belongs to the city of Setúbal, which is the southern end of the Lisbon region, and is close enough to the capital to make it an easy day trip for fun in the sun and the sea .

Troia

Wicker parasols and loungers are available in the summer.

The Troia peninsula is the starting point of Portugal’s longest beach ( one of the world’s longest uninterrupted stretches of sand ) that extends for 65 kilometers (40 miles) to the town of Sines. Remarkably, it has been able to keep its pristine beauty and there are only a few hotels and apartment buildings. It also preserves ruins of an important Roman settlement and a community of dolphins , which can often be seen in these waters.

Troia marina

The Troia marina, overlooked by the landmark design hotel.

In recent years, it has been turned into an upmarket destination , but is less exclusive than Comporta immediately to the south, which is a quiet destination of the rich and famous (designer Christian Louboutin owns a villa here and Madonna often rode horses on this coast when she moved to Lisbon ). It has a landmark design hotel (see accommodation information below) and a casino by a marina, but there’s little else to do besides enjoying the beach and the views. And they are some quite beautiful views, with the Arrábida Natural Park to the north and pine trees to the east and south.

Beaches in Troia

Although it’s really one long beach, Troia is divided into four main “beaches” -- going from north to south, they are:

Troia-Mar Beach

It’s the northern section, facing Arrábida’s vegetation, within walking distance of the marina and where you arrive in the catamaran from Setúbal (see transportation details below). It has wicker parasols and loungers for rent in the summer. The shallow, calm waters mean that this is where everyone brings the kids.

Bico das Lulas

Bico das Lulas Beach, Troia

The boardwalk from Troia-Mar leads to this beach, which also has wicker parasols and loungers for rent. It faces west, and directly in front you see a sandbar known as “Ilha de Troia” (or “Troia Island”), which can only be reached by private boats, available for rent at the port of Setúbal.

Troia-Galé Beach

As it’s more distant from the hotels and apartments by the marina, this is a quieter section, but also has lifeguard supervision in the summer and a bar for refreshments.

Soltroia Beach

This is the southern part of Troia, where you arrive if you go by car, which means that it’s the most crowded section and more frequented by families. It has more of a beach resort feel and also lifeguards during the bathing season.

Troia Beach

There are nearly deserted sections between the main beaches.

In between these beaches are nearly-deserted parts, with some people often choosing to discreetly sunbathe nude on the dunes (especially on the stretch between Troia-Galé and Soltroia, where you first see the pine trees, although this is not recognized as an official nude beach).

How to Get to Troia

Avenida Luisa Todi, Setúbal

Signs in Setúbal's main boulevard (Avenida Luisa Todi), pointing to the port and the catamaran to Troia.

To go from Lisbon to Troia by public transportation, take the train to Setúbal, where you can then hop on a catamaran or ferry to the beach. The train departs from Lisbon’s Roma-Areeiro station (which is linked to the green line of the Metro ) and stops at three other stations in Lisbon before crossing the bridge to the suburbs across the river, and terminating in Setúbal. Those other stations in Lisbon are Entrecampos (on the yellow line of the Metro), Sete Rios (on the blue line; connected to the “Jardim Zoológico” station) and Campolide (not connected to the Metro). The stations of Entrecampos and Sete Rios are the easiest to connect to from the center of Lisbon.

Atlantic Ferries, Setúbal

The ticket office for the catamaran to Troia

The train is operated by the Fertagus company, and departs once per hour. It takes 58 minutes to reach Setúbal, where you should exit the station to the left and go down Estrada dos Ciprestes, a road which becomes Avenida Manuel Maria Portela after a roundabout. At the end of that avenue, turn left towards Avenida Luísa Todi (Setúbal’s main boulevard) and the port (it’s about a 15-minute walk from the train station to the port).

Ferry tickets machine

The machine to buy the catamaran tickets

At the port, you’ll see signs pointing to “Catamarans” or “Atlantic Ferries” -- that’s the ticket office and departure point of the catamaran to Troia. In the summer, it operates for almost 24 hours, departing once per hour on weekdays and every half hour on weekends, from as early as 6:20am to 4am! It takes less than 15 minutes to reach Troia, and has a pleasant outdoor area, where you can sit and admire the view of Setúbal and the neighboring Arrábida Natural Park. Outside the summer season, it departs once every hour. You can check the current schedule on the Atlantic Ferries website.

Catamaran to Troia

The catamaran at the pier in Setúbal

Tickets are €8.40 per person, but the return to Setúbal is free. You may buy your ticket at the ticket office or from the ticket machines.

Inside the catamaran to Troia

The interior of the catamaran to Troia

If you prefer to go by car, cross 25 de Abril Bridge to Almada and follow the signs to Setúbal. From the center of Lisbon to the port of Setúbal it’s about 45 minutes. You may then leave your car in Setúbal and take the catamaran to Troia, or choose the ferry, which takes cars. The ferry departs every half hour throughout the week, from 7:30am to around 11pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends (the journey takes less than 20 minutes). You’re charged €18.70 to take your car on the ferry, and that includes the fare for the driver. Another passenger in the car pays €5.30, and additional passengers pay €4.10 (children up to the age of 5 are free). If you leave your car in Setúbal but take the ferry as a regular passenger, tickets are €5.30 each way. This means that the catamaran is the cheapest option. Also note that the catamaran takes you to the northern side of the Troia peninsula (to Troia-Mar beach), while the ferry goes to the southern end, Soltroia.

Catamaran exterior

The outdoor area of the catamaran offers views of Setúbal and Troia along the way.

Portugal City Travel Guide: Tróia Peninsula

Tróia Peninsula, Setubal, Portugal.

The Tróia Peninsula lies south of Setúbal across the Sado Estuary west of the historic town of Alcácer do Sal .

The peninsula is a 21 km-long spit of sand and pine woods with excellent beaches on the Atlantic Ocean side. It stretches all the way down to the trendy resort of Comporta .

Tróia is around 50 km south of Lisbon and is best reached by train and then ferry from Setúbal. Tróia gets very busy in the summer, especially at weekends and there may be queues for both the car and foot passenger ferries (the catamaran) from Setúbal.

The area is part of the municipality of Grândola.

Casino Tróia, Portugal.

Close to the ferry port on the Tróia side are a number of large resort hotels and the Casino Tróia . Presently open from 11 am to 11 pm the casino features an impressive multi-media light show with over 200 slot machines as well as roulette and gaming tables. The casino is part of the modern, five-star Troia Design Hotel .

Beaches on the Tróia Peninsula, Portugal.

Wooden boardwalks to protect the fragile dunes lead to the fine, sandy beaches on the peninsula.

Nearest to the ferry terminal is Praia de Tróia Rio . Heading south on the Atlantic side are Praia Tróia Mar and Praia da Questa . Praia do Golfe is opposite the golf course and south again is Praia da Costa da Galé .

Heading towards Comporta are more beaches. The Praia Atlântica , Praia Do Malheirão , Praia da Malha da Costa and Praia Troia . They form one huge expanse of open beach with little shade.

The 18-hole, par 72, 6,317-meter Troia Golf Course has great views of the sea to the west and the Arrábida mountains to the north.

Ruínas Romanas de Troia, Portugal.

Also worth a visit are the area's substantial Roman remains . The Acala Island ruins (aka Cetobriga Roman Ruins or Ruínas Romanas de Troia ) were once the largest fish salting center in the Roman Empire and were in use until the 6th century.

They are open from October to March, Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am - 1 pm and from 2.30 pm to 6 pm. The rest of the year they are open for guided tours by an archaeologist only in June and September on Saturdays at 3 pm and July and August on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10.30 am.

The Cetobriga Roman Ruins have applied to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are on Portugal's tentative list of new places to be added.

This area of Portugal has grown rice since the Moorish period. The Museu do Arroz in Comporta is dedicated to the history and culture of rice farming here.

Book a boat tour to see the bottle-nosed dolphins in the Sado Estuary.

The Roman ruins

The Roman ruins of Tróia have been classified as a “Monumento Nacional” since 1910. This site, bathed by the ocean, was a large complex for the production of fish cured meats. It was built in the first half of the 1st century. This complex consisted of salting factories, houses, thermal baths, a mausoleum and its necropolis. The 1956 excavations uncovered Roman baths, covering 450 m2. There are hot, temperate and cool water pools, an underground heating system, as well as a swimming pool and a sports hall. A timeless visit not to be missed to understand the unique history of the Comporta region.

Bird and dolphin watching

Dolphins, of the Corazon Roazes species, have taken up residence at the mouth of the Sado River. About three dozen of these animals live in groups in the Sado estuary between Setúbal, Tróia and Comporta. They were first identified in 1981, and are subject to ongoing monitoring and follow-up. You can easily take a guided sea trip aboard a catamaran to admire these mammals, as well as the many species of birds that inhabit the estuary, an experience not to be missed!

The beaches of Tróia

Tróia beach / praia tróia.

The huge beaches of the Tróia peninsula are particularly recommended for children. These are the only beaches where there are few waves, which allows the youngest to enjoy the joys of swimming. The infrastructures around, and at the marina, make it easy to eat, buy ice cream or drinks. Rental of mattresses and parasols in summer.

Plage Atlantica (Soltroia) / Praia Atlântica

Here the sand is golden and the ocean is calm because it is slowed down by the sandbanks that can be seen from the Arrabida mountain. This beach is one of the safest for young children to swim on. The sand is fine and white as far as the eye can see and the water is clear and limpid. Its name comes from the private residence “Soltroia”, not very busy, which must be crossed to access it. Remember to bring your equipment as there is no deckchair or parasol.

Setubal Introduction - Setubal as a day trip - Things to do and see - Beaches - Lisbon to Setubal - Troia Peninsula

Troia, Portugal - the Peninsula de Tróia

The Troia Peninsula (Peninsula de Tróia) is one of the most beautiful coastlines of Portugal, with a 13km stretch of pristine sands, crystal clear waters and pine forested sand dunes.

Hidden within the pine forests are exclusive tourist developments, offering chic and secluded holidays for those who can afford the cost of super-luxury.

The main tourist development of Troia is to the northern tip of the sandy peninsula and exudes sophistication and class, with fine dining, fashionable bars and a grand casino complex.

This high-class reputation of Troia originates from the 1980s when the magnificent Troia Golf was constructed, and this golf course is still considered as one of Portugal’s finest.

Praia Troia Mar beach

Tróia is famed for its beautiful beaches

For the average tourist, Troia is an outstanding beach destination and is easily accessible from Setubal due to the regular and inexpensive ferry service.

During the summer, Troia is incredibly popular with day trippers, but hire a bike or take a short hike, leads to deserted beaches and peaceful forests. Troia was the site of a major Roman fish-salting settlement (Cetobriga) and today there are extensive ruins on the eastern side of the peninsula.

Troia has a reputation for exclusivity and wealth, but it is actually a peaceful and scenic stretch of coastline, which is highly recommend to visit. This guide will provide an introduction to Troia Peninsula, either for a holiday or day trip. Related articles: - Setubal guide - Serra da Arrabida - Sesimbra guide

Troia Welcome

Welcome to Tróia

Peninsula de Tróia

Troia for a Holiday

Troia is a wonderful holiday destination for visitors who seek tranquillity and seclusion, combined with a touch of class. Any holiday to Troia will be primarily focused around idyllic beaches and the facilities of your hotel complex; Troia is not a bustling or hectic resort. A holiday to Troia will be much more expensive, but then this is why people choose to live or have a holiday here.

Marina de Tróia

The main resort of Troia overlooks the marina

The main town is at the northern tip of the peninsula and boasts a selection of stylish restaurants and bars, and the Casino de Tróia. Even though the town is small, there is always a good holiday atmosphere, and in-part due to the ferry departing from here.

There is a second popular development further south on the Peninsula, referred to as Sol Tróia . This area is a mixture of modern holiday homes and stylish hotels, including the Pestana Troia Eco-Resort. Sol Tróia is much calmer and low key than the northern tip Troia with fewer restaurants and bars, but there is the trendy SPOT - Troy Water Lounge . Below is a map of Troia showing the locations of the main hotels and accommodation, if you adjust the dates to your holiday it will display availability and the best prices.

Troia as a day trip

The main reason for a day trip to Tróia are for the beaches, and they are wonderful beaches, but there is more to see and do in the region.

Bikes could be hired (or brought over on the ferry) to cycle along the quiet roads to the Roman ruins. The undeveloped eastern side of the Peninsula is a haven for wildlife including flamingos and migratory birds. Alternatively, a relaxing afternoon and evening could be spent in the romantic restaurants, which overlook the marina and estuary.

The majority of day-trippers come from Setubal, as this is the departure location for both ferries (the passenger catamaran and the car ferry). It is possible to have a day trip to Troia (using public transport) from Sesimbra or even Lisbon (train from Lisbon and ferry from Setubal). If you are on holiday in Setubal, then Troia offers the best beaches which are accessible by public transport.

Tróia nature

Tróia is not just exclusive tourist developments, there is also beautiful natural scenery

The beaches of Troia

The main reason for a day trip (and often a holiday) are the glorious beaches, which extend along the western side of the Peninsula. This coastline offers vast beaches of soft golden sands, onto which the cooling waters of the Atlantic Ocean roll onto.

Praia do Bico das Lulas, Troia

The Praia do Bico das Lulas beach, south of the main town

One interesting aspect of Troia Peninsula is that the seas tend to be much calmer than at other Portuguese westward facing coastlines (such as the Costa da Caparica or Ericeira, both famous for their surfing).

This calmness is due to sunken sandbars out to sea, and these give rise to the calm turquoise seas for which the region is renowned for, especially Comporta to the south. The beaches on the western side of Troia are safe for children to swim in, but only swim where there is lifeguard supervisor, and it is safe to do so.

troia Praia Atlantica beach

The Praia Atlantica beach, looks out over… the Atlantic (as the name suggests!)

The majority of visitors tend to congregate around the north-eastern side of the Praia de Tróia, as this is the closest beach to the ferry terminal and main resort town. From the town centre there are broad walks to quieter sections of this beach, including the southern side of the Praia do Bico das Lulas . To further escape the crowds head to the Praia de Tróia-Galé, which is behind the Troia Golf course.

The Praia Atlantica is the main beach for Sol Tróia, and is another magnificent beach, which is very similar to the northern tip.

The eastern side of the Troia Peninsula has beaches that are as picturesque as those of the western coastline, but the waters come from the Sado Estuary and are not suitable for swimming in.

Troia beach Sado Estuary

The beach on the eastern side of Troia overlook the Sado estuary and tend to be much quieter but are not for swimming

Troia Golf is the outstanding golf course of the Troia Peninsula, and is considered as one of the top 20 golf courses in Europe. The setting is beautiful, and, with narrow greens and numerous bunkers, it is a challenging 18-hole course. Green fees are €102/ €78 (18/9 holes) and they can be contacted by phone: +351 265 494 024, or www.troiaresort.pt/en/troia-golf/

The Roman ruins of Cetobriga

Cetobriga was a major Roman settlement which specialised in the salting of fish, caught from the Sado Estuary or the Atlantic Ocean. This fish-salting process was performed on almost an industrial scale, and many of the factory like buildings have been unearthed, along with bathhouse temples and even an early Christian church. The town was abandoned in the 5th century after being critically ravaged by a winter storm.

The ruins are situated on a separate headland of Troia , and are unfortunately a significant distance (7km) from the main resort town. If you have a car (or are cycling), this is a very peaceful and idyllic section of Troia. The entrance fee to the ruins is €6.00 and it closes during lunch.

Tuinas Roanas Cetobriga Troia

The Cetobriga ruins have detailed information and are well worth the cycle, hike or drive from Tróia

Travel to the Tróia Peninsula

There is just a single road connecting Troia to the mainland, but this travels from the south, via Comporta, and is a massive detour when heading from Lisbon. Most traffic from the north crosses the estuary using the car ferry (€17.20/€31.00 single/return) that departs from Doca do Comércio in Setubal and terminates at the Cais Sul terminal on Troia. This ferry terminal is close to Sol Tróia, and is three kilometres to from the main resort town and the passenger ferry terminal.

Troia setubal Atlantic Ferries

The slower car ferry heading back to Setubal

For foot passengers, the catamaran is the better option. It departs Setubal from Cais 3 and terminates at the Ponta do Adoxe, close to the marina in Troia . A return catamaran ticket costs €7.75 and is charged to the Navegante Card (the same public transport ticket as used in Lisbon), which costs €0.50 for the initial purchase. For the latest timetable, please visit the Atlantic Ferries website: https://www.atlanticferries.pt/en/

(link opens new tab)

It is possible to travel on the ferry as a foot passenger, and this is convenient for Sol Tróia, but the journey is much longer than the catamaran. A single ticket costs €3.60.

Fair winds and pleasurable moments.

In the alignment dividing the Atlantic from the Sado Estuary, you’ll find one of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays – the Bay of Setúbal. Known for its resident population bottlenose dolphins, the bay is an idyllic location for sailing and windsurfing. Troia Marina has 180 berths, where you can rent a boat to discover deserted beaches in the company of dolphins. If you’d rather stay on land, you can savour a cool drink at the marina with an ocean view facing Setúbal.

Troia Marina, your safe Harbour.

Look for buoy No. 2 and then navigate on the heading of the entrance (Azimuth=040) for about 3 miles to the Outão fort.

At night, when approaching the backshore, and all the way until swinging towards the channel leading to Tróia, keep on the previous heading – (formed by Doca and Azeda lighthouses).

After buoy No. 4 the channel widens slightly, but keep on the heading.

Pass the Outão lighthouse, then passing by buoy No. 5 you see TROIA RESORT on the starboard side, by the Ponta do Adoxe.

Sail half a mile past buoy No.5 further along the entry lane. Turn starboard, keeping a safe distance from land.

On the starboard side, the TROIA MARINA is marked with Starboard (EB) and Portside (BB).

After entering the marina, moor alongside the reception and fuel dock to starboard.

Welcome to the TROIA MARINA, perfect for sea lovers.

Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

The colony of bottlenose dolphins is composed of 28 individuals. This population is unique in Portugal, one of the very few in Europe living in estuaries.

The bottlenose dolphin is an easy species to detect: It is approximately 2 to 4 meters long, it has a grey torso and a slightly lighter belly, a pronounced snout, and weighs between 150 and 600 kg.

Bottlenose dolphins feed mainly on fish, cephalopods (cuttlefish, squid and octopus) and invertebrates.  When searching for food bottlenose dolphins use their echolocation system for detecting prey.

Sexual maturity is reached at around 11 and 12 years. Gestation lasts 10 to 12 months and each female gives birth to one calf every 2 or 3 years. Dolphins live around 30 to 40 years.

  • Bottlenose dolphins can be seen in the vicinity of TROIA MARINA.
  • The presence of vessels can interfere with their routine – resting, feeding, socialising and reproducing – so we count on you to comply with the following rules:
  • Avoid abrupt course changes.
  • Be quiet when around dolphins to not attract nor disturb them.
  • Do not exceed the speed at which the dolphins swim.
  • Keep clear of other approaching dolphins.
  • Travel in a direction parallel to the direction of the dolphins, and behind them, so that they have a clear 180º field before them.
  • Place your boat at 60º behind the dolphins.
  • Limit your viewing time to a recommended maximum of 30 minutes.

The following activities are forbidden:

  • Chasing or separating a school of bottlenose dolphins.
  • Touching the dolphins.
  • Feeding the dolphins.
  • Chasing after a dolphin for more than 30 minutes.
  • Approaching bottlenose dolphins near the shore thus limiting their movements around the vessel.
  • Reversing near the dolphins, except for an emergency.
  • Swimming towards the bottlenose dolphins.
  • Using jet-skis and similar craft when watching the dolphins.
  • Having more than three vessels within a 100-metre radius of the dolphins.
  • Move away immediately at the first sign of disturbance or agitation:
  • Sudden change in the direction and speed of the bottlenose dolphins.
  • Dodging and turning away from the vessel.
  • Longer diving time and/or shorter surface time when approached.
  • Repeated tail fin slapping.
  • Adult dolphins keeping their calves away from the vessel(s) or placing themselves between the calves and the vessel(s).

We are counting on you!

If you see a wounded animal, apparently weakened or dead, or if you witness any behaviour that is clearly in breach of these rules, please report it to the maritime authorities

What to eat, see and do in Portugal’s Troia Peninsula, a hidden gem

catamarans troia

Lisbon has long been a favourite for city breakers, with its rich history, decadent feel and the sound of fado drifting across the Bairro Alto.

But a less travelled path takes you 45 minutes south of the Portuguese capital, to less crowded Sessimbra and Setubal, and the golden sands of the Troia Peninsula.

The clue is in the unmissable pink Art Deco building right in the centre of Setubal – the Mercado do Livramento, built in 1930, is packed from 10am every day with locals buying fresh fish from bacalhau (cod) to dorada, turbot and skate. There are numerous restaurants on the main drag, Avenida Luísa Todi – try the dried cuttlefish. Over in Troia, meanwhile, El Christo on the waterfront is not as pricey as you might expect for the marina location.

catamarans troia

Meat is on the menu too, though – head to atmospheric De Pedra e Sal, part of a lovely courtyard area in Setubal, for steaks served on saltboards, with roast vegetables. For dessert, factor in a dash of Moscadel, the sherry-like tipple that Setubal is famous for. Pear soaked in it, for example, with salted caramel ice cream, is divine. And no Portuguese meal is complete without a nata or two (custard tart) to round things off.

Half an hour south on the edge of the Troia Peninsula you also find the achingly cool Comporta Café on the beach – share a sea bream or dorada with a glass or two of red or rose from the nearby Herdade de Comporta winery. In Comporta village, meanwhile, restaurant choices include Cavalarica – a restaurant and cocktail bar set in an old stables - and Museo do Arroz, a nod to the thriving local rice industry.

The five-star Troia Design Hotel has 61 rooms and 144 apartments, while the four-star Aqualuz aparthotel around the corner offers more value. Troia golf can arrange regular pick-ups to the course from either hotel, as well as from the Setubal catamaran.

For something more boutique, head south past Comporta to Sublime , an eco-retreat in the woods with 23 rooms and suites as well as cabana villas. Expect bamboo panelling and all-white minimalism, relax in the central infinity pool, in the spa or do a yoga session or two.

catamarans troia

With 60kms of pristine beach, Troia is a big favourite with Lisbon families, particularly in high summer when extra catamaran services nip across the Sado Estuary from Setubal. Smart Lisbon money has also gone into Troia, with villas and townhouses being snapped up by the likes of former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

The casino in the Troia Design Hotel by the marina keeps the high rollers entertained, and don’t be surprised to see golfers coming off the catamaran from Setubal with their bags – Troia’s 18-hole championship course, created by revered US course designer Robert Trent Jones Senior, is ranked in the top 20 in Europe by good judges such as Golf Monthly magazine.

It’s a long way from the bulk of Lisbon courses around Cascais but it’s worth the detour. The course at Troia is 6,317 metres long, fairways are narrow and the greens are lightning fast. Holes hugging the beach such as signature hole the third, as well as the superb fifth, also offer great views across to Arribada Nature Park.

catamarans troia

Troia also has impressive Roman ruins while at Comporta you’ll find boutique stores such as Manumaya, selling clothes and bric-a-brac from Guatemala. With stunning sandy beaches such as Pego and Carvalhal, Comporta is fast becoming a favourite with the trendy set, not least because fashionistas Phillippe Starck and Christian Louboutin have holiday homes there.

At Comporta you will also find the aforementioned Herdade da Comporta winery, which does tours and tastings of its many wines. Try the Parus reserve if you like full-bodied reds or the Tourigo Nacional-based Private Selection rose.

On the way back to Troia, stop off at the fishing village of Carrasqueira, head to the boardwalk and have a nosey around the artistically adorned stilted fishermen’s shacks.

Setubal is undergoing something of a revival, having struggled economically since the financial crisis of 2008. Many old buildings are now being restored, such as Casa da Baia, an 18th-century mansion on Avenida Luísa Todi now housing the local tourist office. It’s also a promotional centre for regional wines, sweets and cheese while the old cloister has been made into a delightful roof garden.

The tourist office also has a fantastic educational homage to the pods of bottlenose dolphins you might see in the Sado Estuary if you take a tour. Visit sadoarrabida.pt for details of day trips.

Getting there

Air Portugal flies daily to Lisbon from Heathrow, Gatwick and City, from £55 one-way. flytap.com

Metro trains go regularly from Lisbon to Setubal. Catamarans operate every half hour between Setubal and Troia (sevon euros return), while there is also an hourly car ferry service which drops you off near the Roman ruins.

The Tróia Peninsula, or the Peninsula de Tróia, is a gorgeous coastal gem with stunning beaches, crystal clear waters and pine-forested sand dunes. With great opportunities for cycling, golfing, and water sports, there is plenty to keep you entertained between sunbathing sessions on the beach. Also, great restaurants abound and you might even get the chance to see some dolphins. Sound like the vacation destination you’ve been searching for? Here is a guide to enjoying the best that this little slice of heaven has to offer.

troia portugal

This posh area has been developed with class and privacy in mind, and it offers chic and secluded holidays for those looking to treat themselves. The main tourist development of Tróia is to the northern tip of the sandy peninsula and it is here that you will find fine dining, fashionable bars and a grand casino complex. This swanky repute of Tróia dates back to the 1980s when the gorgeous Tróia Golf Course was constructed, and this golf course is still considered as one of Portugal’s finest. Portugal has some of the best golf courses in the world, plan a golf holiday with this guide.

Although there is a road approaching Tróia from the south, I would really recommend taking the lovely and refreshing ferry ride. If coming from Lisbon, first take the hour trip to Setúbal , then you simply take the ferry across the river Sado to get to the resort of Tróia. Although you can complete the journey back and forth in one day from Lisbon, the majority of day-trippers to Tróia come from Setúbal. This is the departure location for both ferries, including the passenger catamaran and the car ferry. That being said, it is possible to have a day trip to Tróia, using public transport, from Sesimbra or even Lisbon. If you are already in Setúbal, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore Tróia, as this is where you will definitely find the best local beaches accessible by public transport.

Although summer is definitely the busiest time on this beautiful peninsula, Tróia makes a nice destination all year round. You won’t find scorching heat from November- March, but the mild temperatures of Tróia’s microclimate allow you to spend a few days full of activities, whether it’s summer or winter. Keep in mind that during the summer Tróia is incredibly popular with day-trippers. But if you’re looking for a little peace and quiet, you can easily hire a bike or take a short hike in order to find yourself on a deserted beach or in a peaceful forest.

Troia Beach

Beaches in Tróia

If you’re looking for beaches that go on for days, Tróia will not disappoint. Along this sunny bank, you’ll find one of the most extensive beaches in Portugal. In fact, 18 full kilometres to explore and enjoy at your leisure. These idyllic beaches are blessed with soft golden sand onto which the cooling waters of the Atlantic Ocean roll, making for a pleasantly refreshing combination. An added bonus of the beaches scattered along the Tróia Peninsula is that the seas tend to be much calmer than at other Portuguese westward-facing coastlines, such as the surfing hot spots of Costa da Caparica or Ericeira . This welcome calmness is primarily thanks to sunken sandbars out to sea that give rise to the calm turquoise waters. If you’re planning to take the family with you, it’s good to know that the beaches on the western side of Tróia are safe for children to swim in. The water even tends to be a bit warmer than neighbouring beaches and there is usually a lifeguard on duty.

Here are my favourite beaches in Tróia:

Praia de Tróia is the closest beach to the ferry terminal and main resort town and is therefore where you are most likely to find the highest concentration of visitors. From the town centre, pleasant boardwalks are leading to quieter sections of this beach, including the southern side of the Praia do Bico das Lulas . If you’re really looking to get away from the crowds, your best bet is to head to the Praia de Tróia-Galé , behind the Tróia Golf course. The Praia Atlântica is the main beach for Sol Tróia and is another magnificent beach, which is very similar to the northern tip. The eastern side of the Península also boasts some truly gorgeous beaches, but keep in mind that due to the fact that these waters come from the Sado Estuary, they are not suitable for swimming.

Water sports

If you easily get bored laying stationary on the beach, Tróia still has plenty to offer! In addition to the pine forests ideal for cycling or walking, you can also enjoy a full range of water sports. Weather permitting, you can even try some windsurfing or sailing. The Tróia Marina is always bustling and full of helpful staff who will be glad to guide you in the right direction for your next adventure.

Golf in Tróia

You can’t talk about Tróia without highlighting one of its most famous attractions, the Troia Golf Course . Designed by the famous American architect Bobby Jones, this beautiful course is easy to appreciate- even for those who aren’t crazy about hitting the links. Truly integrated into the landscape, it is aesthetically marvellous and also offers up a great option for those in search of a real golfing challenge. Set amidst a beautiful backdrop, you’ll have to navigate narrow greens and numerous bunkers on this tricky 18-hole course. This course regularly makes the list of the best golf courses in Europe and is in the standard rotation of many international competitions.

troia golf

The chance to see these smart and friendly creatures is another fun experience that awaits you at the Tróia Peninsula. It is extremely common to spot dolphins at the point where the river Sado meets the sea. You can also take a boat ride out to observe their playful behaviour and see them up close. Book your dolphin watching tour right now.

The Tróia Peninsula has lots of great dining options. Whether you’re looking for an elegant dining experience or to sample some local street food, you’ll find plenty of options to suit your appetite. Go on a food and wine tasting tour. Book it right now!

Gomes – Wine and Snack House

The best-known mini gourmet market in the area, the owners of Gomes have expanded their enterprise to include a lovely little restaurant, Gomes – Casa de Vinhos e Petiscos . As the name implies, here you can try cheeses, sausages, preserves and hams to mince and good wines and cocktails to drink. You’ll also have the chance to snack on local delicacies like clams, and bean stew. The indoor atmosphere is cosy, but I recommend grabbing a table outside on warmer nights to fully take in your surroundings. It’s a 20-minute drive from the Tróia bay, but it is definitely worth the time.

gomes

B&G Restaurant

This lovely place offers a magnificent view of the marina and is decorated with stylish contemporary designs. In terms of the menu, they are all about celebrating regional flavours and showing off the best that Portuguese cuisine has to offer. This is a great place to come for fresh seafood prepared according to traditional recipes but with a modern twist.

Street Food at Tróia Resort

If burgers on bourgeois brioche bread, homemade croissants and waffles, and crepes topped with sugar and fresh lemon juice sound good to you, then you’re in luck. The centre of Tróia has a street food market all summer with these and other vans, as well as terrace tables for eating all day. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to try snacks of all sorts while strolling around at your leisure.

food truck troia

You have plenty of attractive options when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations in Tróia. Whether you’re looking for full-on luxury or a budget option, here a few top picks.

Blue & Green Tróia Design Hotel

If you’re looking to treat yourself to a stylish home away from home, this gorgeous 5-star hotel will not disappoint. With 14 floors of residential suites and luxury rooms, this hotel includes a Spa with over 70 different treatments, a kid’s club, 2 roof-top swimming pools, restaurants and a lounge bar that each reflect a unique approach to design.

Aqualuz Suite Hotel Apartamentos

If you’re travelling with the family and want all the amenities, in addition, comfortable rooms, this large hotel is a good option. You can start each day with their generous breakfast offering while enjoying breathtaking views over the sea, the Arrabida Mountain and the Sado River.

Villa Kochab

A bit further down the peninsula, this charming guesthouse has everything you need for a relaxing beach getaway. An intimate space of only 5 rooms, the area is surrounded by great beaches, restaurants and makes for a very chilled laid back escape.
