for my Yankee 30 and need some info about the . Hopefully there are some Sailing enthusiasts out there that might know: Is it possible to convert a standard El Toro wooden into a two piece unit? I love those little but can't really fit a 14foot mast inside my Yankee. Don't really want to be carrying it around on either. Anyone seen a two piece retrofit that works?

Thanks

Trent

Boat: 15 foot Canoe
tube that you could fit the two halfs of the mast into. 18" or two feet ought to do for the tube length.
Just one suggestion.
Kind regards,

off a couple times... Marvelous . Rows like a beach ball though.

The laser 4.7m rig is a two-piece mast of about the same sail area as the el toro. A regular laser mast with the 4.7 sail might have the gooseneck at approximately the right height if the el toro were modified to house the circular mast.

EL Toro is a 7 ′ 10 ″ / 2.4 m monohull sailboat designed by Charles McGregor and built by Schock W.D. and Moore Sailboats starting in 1939.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The El Toro is one of several variants of the original Charles MacGregor designed Sabot, which appeared in The Rudder Magazine in 1939. Others include the NAPLES SABOT, the US SABOT, and the HOLDFAST TRAINER of Australia. The EL TORO is primarily seen on the US west coast.

For a long time I have wanted a sailing dinghy. Yesterday i bought an EL TORO. and while that is great and all it is not 100% complete. Namely, it has no rigging, and a bad sail. Where can i get a sailing diagram, so i can rig it properly? also, is there a place that sells sails just for this racing class? thanks.

Welcome to Sailnet Union Pacific.

thank you, glad to be here. seems a lot less inflammatory then CF

if you post pics I can help out with whats missiing, Im used to the euro version the OPTIMIST which is the same hull but not with a marconi rig in essence the el toro is much simpler to handle and raise sail etc... post pics Id be glad to help they are great little boats and are a perfect dinghy for the mothership in fact Ill be building one soon or similar to act as a liferaft with sail rig for my islander 36 cheers

as soon as i have them, i will post them. It is our new dinghy. I wanted to sail for fun, but now i may do a few fun races when i find them. It needs a lot of work, got it for $50.

not bad at all! jajaja thats a deal sails look on craigslist or ebay...dont have to buy new sheets, ebay too, or use whatever looks nice at the hardware store...again you dont have to get all crazy...Ive seen plenty of el toros rigged with chromed pulleys bought at hardware stores too pay attention to rudder attachment too the hull needs t be looked at at the trunk where the daggerboard goes to make sure it doesnt leak...there is a rubber flap on each side that needs to be there or else downwing you will get a gusher! other than that its a dream of a boat to sail and learn on I had 2 friends, the goodman brothers in stockton california who raced them extensively, as teenagers...one was national champ once great boats in any case!

I am not sure of your class. I have an FJ. Intensity sails seems to have the best market price for the FJ. Again, I do not know if they can do anything for you. best wishes, Lou

The El Torro is a great little boat that came about as a result of a bullshoot session at the Richmond Yacht Club (hence the shovel logo) in the late 1930's. We had one as a dinghy on our Rhodes Reliant in the early 70's. For information on the boats see (click on) EL TORO sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com . For help with the boat, parts sources etc. see (click on) ETIYRA- El Toro International Yacht Racing Association

after fixing it up, and you get good, you can do the "across the bay" solo in san francisco for some real fun! jajaja

I did a search and saw many new sails for about 450$. When i was looking for an extra sail for my mac dinghy I saw a used main that might work for you at Atlantic sail traders for 210$ stock # 43563 and Intensity sells a new sabot sail for 150$

el toro sailboat mast

It's basically the SF Bay Area version of the US Sabot, so while there weren't a lot of El Toro's out there, you can rig it identical to a sabot, which have plenty of info on the internet. I've been patiently waiting to get a Sabot or El Toro, with oars and a sail and use it as a dinghy and for a couple hours fun on hot days. So anything you find on Sabots can be used for El Toro's, check craigslists in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego and you will find just sails for sale, and they would probably ship them to you.

Sabot sailing kit. Sail, mast, boom, dagger boards, tiller, rudder. or just SABOT SAIL BOAT SAIL

Where are you located? I think I have around here a rudder and maybe a daggerboard. Not sure what happened to the sail, but haven't seen it in years. The Opti hull is not the same. Opti has a flat bottom, no keel, only a good rocker. El Toro is maybe 4 inches longer, and has a slight V to the bottom.

I need to bring my mast home for some repair work. I don't want to bring the whole boat home, any suggestions for bring the just the mast. I have a long bed super cab F150 with a topper.

Been my experience to tote the mast home aboard the same trailer that you haul your boat around on. Be careful though.Advantage over length is gained by rigging the mast at an upward angle toward the hitch/ladder end. Above all observe towing safety conventions. Tie a red rag on the rearward end. Tom

I guess it would depend on how long your truck is... figure the mast is 28' long for that vessel. If it doesn't hang over too much in the front or rear (be sure to check vehicle regs regarding this) I guess you could fasten it to the top of the truck, and use a mast support in the bed to help secure it. Usually, I've trailered the entire boat - a hassle to be sure, but at least you know it should get there safely...maybe plan some other projects at the same time for the vessel so the trip isn't a total waste.

MrBill_FLL

imho, I would drag the boat on the trailer, and not try to jury rig a support, unless you have a very long trailer to hold the mast. the mast is just too long to carry over the truck. legally. and you'll probably break something. Trying to save an hour or two will seem foolish if you break the mast. -(my .02)

HEINZIR

I had to buy a new (used) mast when I was dismasted at the mooring by a drunken power boater in the middle of the night. I used the boat trailer to get the new mast home. I bolted a 2X4 cross member across the bunks at the back with a couple of short uprights spaced 3" apart near the center to hold the mast in place. Worked fine.

I had a customer come up to my shop in Wisconsin, last week, from Texas, 1,004 miles, to get a new mast for a 26M which is 30' long, and heavier. He had a 2000 Ford F150, with the small seat(s) behind the drivers seat, no topper. He had made 3 crutches, out of 2x's, one in the back of the bed, one in the front of the bed, and one attached to his brush-guard in the front. - Bill at BOATS 4 SAIL

SPECIFICATIONS AND SAIL PLAN

Eliminating Grommet-to-Grommet Measurement

el toro sailboat mast

SAIL PLAN ... No restrictions are made on materials. Insignia shall be a shovel, the dimensions and shape as prescribed on the grid plan. Official number shall be 10" in height, to be clearly legible on both sides of the sail...should not be back-to-back. Reinforcing of sail cloth shall not extend more than a 12" radius measured from behind the bolt rope at the three corners of the sail.

SAIL MEASURING ...Sail shall be measured by spreading out on a smooth flat surface with battens in pockets and a 3 lb. pull on the leech. The leech shall be governed by measurement in a straight line from the top of the intersection of the luff immediately behind the bolt rope with the top of the headboard to the outboard extremity of the clew immediately above the bolt rope. Said measurement shall not exceed 12 ft. 2 inches for a sail measured for the first time and 12 ft. 2-3/4 inches for a sail previously measured.

Nominal length of luff = 10 ft. 11 inches

Nominal length of foot = 7 ft. 0 inches

HEADBOARD ...4-½" (shall be right angles or less to luff and inboard extremity shall not exceed 1/2" in distance from the bolt rope).

No more than two battens shall be used. While sailing, the leech end of each batten shall be located no further forward than one half inch from the leech. The upper batten shall be no longer than 26" and the lower batten shall be no longer than 30".

The batten pockets shall not exceed two inches in width and shall not extend more than one inch forward of the maximum batten length. The pockets shall be spaced so as to divide the leech plus or minus one inch. Reinforcing for batten pockets shall not extend more than three inches forward of the batten pockets. No stiffening of the sail other than battens shall be allowed.

The upper girth shall be no longer than 42" and the lower girth shall be no longer than 72". The girths are measured from the measurer's marks at the leech to the nearest point at the luff excluding the bolt rope. The measurer's marks are found by folding the leech into thirds: the head being defined as the upper, forward edge of the sail excluding the bolt rope and the clew being defined as the intersection of the foot and leech excluding the bolt rope.

History of Perm Krai

For the first time the word “perm” was mentioned in “The Tale of Past Years”, a fundamental source in the interpretation of the history of the Eastern Slavs created in the early 12th century. Perm were one of the peoples who paid tribute to the Kievan Rus. They were found by the first Russian expeditions to the Urals, to the north of the Kama River basin. Later, in Russian chronicles, this territory was called Old Perm or Perm Vychegodskaya.

Unlike Perm Vychegodskaya, the land along the upper reaches of the Kama River became known as the Great Perm. This name is often found in the written monuments of the 14th century. In the 14th - 17th centuries, the Great Perm included extensive lands along the Kama from its origins in the west to the Ural mountain range in the east, and from the upper reaches of the Pechora River in the north to the Chusovaya River in the south.

Novgorod merchants were the first ones who got interested in the Great Perm (furs and tributes). In the 14th - the first half of the 15th centuries, the Grand Duchy of Moscow began to encroach on the lands in the upper Kama. In the early 15th century, the first Russian settlements were founded in the Great Perm.

More Historical Facts…

In the second half of the 15th century, after the Novgorod Republic ceased to exist, the area became part of the united Russian state. Russia significantly expanded its borders to the east and gained access to new natural resources.

In the 17th century, the town of Sol Kamskaya (Solikamsk) became an important center of military, economic and cultural assimilation of the Middle Urals in the north. In the south-east, the newly constructed town of Kungur played the same role. In the first quarter of the 18th century, about 46,000 people lived on the territory of Great Perm, about 65% of them were Russians.

Until 1727, the Middle Urals was part of Siberian gubernia with the center in Tobolsk, then Perm was part of Kazan gubernia, and, from 1781, by order of Catherine II, the Perm region ruled by a governor-general was formed.

It remained the main mining area of the Russian Empire until the end of the 19th century. There were more than 110 mining plants producing cast iron, iron, steel. For a long time, it was the main provider of copper. Salt production was also developed. In the east of the Urals large deposits of platinum were discovered. By the end of the 19th century, gold mining grew twice.

The 20th century was marked by intense growth of the local industry: engineering structure became more complex and rich. During the Second World War, more than 120 plants were evacuated in the Western Urals. Such branches of industry as chemical, non-ferrous metallurgy, oil-processing developed intensely; oil deposits prospecting began; a number of pulp and paper mills was concentrated in the region; new towns grew on the basis of new industries.

In 1938, Perm Oblast was formed. In 1940-1957, it was called Molotov Oblast. In Soviet times, the Komi-Perm Autonomous District was part of Perm oblast. In 1993, with the adoption of the Constitution of Russia, it became an independent subject of the Russian Federation.

In 2003, a referendum was held in which the residents of Perm Oblast and the Komi-Perm Autonomous District supported the unification of the two regions into one. In 2005, these two administrative regions ceased to exist and the united Perm Krai was formed.

The old town of Kungur, founded in 1663, is a historical town with about 70 monuments of architecture.

Solikamsk is one of the oldest towns in the Urals. There is a unique museum of salt here. The town’s architecture reflects the techniques of Moscow architecture of the mid-17th century and the local tradition dating back to pagan times.

There is a number of interesting places along the Chusovaya River connected with many historical events, well-known figures of Russian history (Ermak, Stroganov, Demidov, Emelyan Pugachev). On its way the river crosses several mountain ranges, therefore, on its banks there are many picturesque rocks.

There are several architectural monuments in the towns of Osa, Usolye. Belogorsky Monastery and Gubaha Ski Resort are also worth mentioning.
