Fill ‘er Up (With Air): The 6 Best Inflatable Catamarans for Fishing, Fun and Portability

Fill ‘er Up (With Air): The 6 Best Inflatable Catamarans for Fishing, Fun and Portability

From the wooden rafts of Polynesia to the 60s surf culture of the Hobie Cat, catamarans (or simply cats) have been a fun way to enjoy the local lake, ocean or bay.

That seemingly effortless way they glide across the water is both relaxing and exhilarating.  What's not relaxing is lugging a heavy vessel across the sand or investing in an expensive traditional catamaran.

Have you considered an inflatable catamaran? Inflatable catamarans are a less expensive and more portable option to traditional cats. You can even use them as inflatable dinghies and yacht tenders.

The main design of a cat is 3000 years old and influenced by the Polynesian wooden rafts that made long journeys across the Pacific. You don't have to journey across the Pacific (or even the Atlantic) to enjoy the fun, convenience and diversity of catamarans.

Keep reading to discover more about inflatable catamarans and how they might be just what you need for fishing, diving or just cruising around the lake.

What is an Inflatable Catamaran?

With a design based on geometry, just like their traditional non-inflatable counterparts, inflatable catamarans offer stability and smooth sailing due to the wide beam and double- hulled tubes on either side.

This isn't your typical full-size dive/snorkel/sightseeing catamaran you've seen in the local marina. They range in size from eight to 15 or so feet and can be propelled by sails, an outboard engine or a pair of oars.

The unique thing about inflatable catamarans is that they, well, inflate, as well as deflate for storage in a car or on a bigger boat. This also makes it easier to carry to and from the water.

Similar in design to a pontoon boat, inflatable catamarans have actually been called pontoon boats (though they're technically not), along with fishing boats or even inflatable kayak s (which they're really not either).

While they don't have cabins or storage in the tubes like full-size (non-inflatable) cats, they can accommodate anywhere from two to eight passengers depending on size.

Benefits of Inflatable Catamarans

  • Lightweight
  • Foldable (like a folding kayak )
  • Fuel Efficient
  • Wide beam for stability
  • Small enough to navigate small coves and sandbars

Features of Inflatable Catamarans

Parallel Tubes:  Two pontoon-like tunnel-hull tubes, located on either side of the platform, provide stability and flotation. They usually have multiple chambers to make inflation easier.

Wide Beams:  Like a traditional cat, this makes it stable for one or multiple passengers whether you're fishing, anchoring out or just cruising around the lake.

Sectional Aluminum Floors:  Sturdy aluminum provides a stable surface. Sections make it easier to put together and take apart.

PVC Hulls:  The bottoms of inflatable catamarans are usually made out of durable PVC, which helps prevent tension and tearing.

Heat-Welded Seams:  Heat welding ensures a sturdy, durable and water-resistant seam that can stand up to saltwater, fresh water and high heat. The high heat factor comes into play if you store it for long periods of time (such as in a garage, shed or attic).

Marine Plywood Transom:  Marine plywood is designed especially for wet, humid and marine environments. It makes a strong material to hold a small outboard engine.

Multiple Propulsion Methods:  Inflatable catamarans can be operated with outboard engines , sails or oars and paddles .

Uses for an Inflatable Catamaran

  • Tender/Dinghy
  • Diving/Snorkeling
  • Support vessel for watersports such as swimming, kayaking and rowing

Glued Seams vs. Welded Seams

Welded seams are often used for RIBs as they are affordable, typically easy to do, and inflated most of the time. Glued seams are best for boats you intend to fold and unfold constantly.

Welded seams become brittle and will start to leak. Additionally, they are not totally repairable as you can only patch them up, which compromises your boat’s quality and performance.

You want to purchase glued seamed boats, which are more flexible and have higher holding power in complex shapes and sizes.

10 Best Inflatable Catamarans To Buy In 2024

Takacat-T380LX

What Are Inflatable Catamaran Sailboats?

Catamarans are easily spotted by being water vessels consisting of 2 parallel hulls (of equal size), connected together by a frame. With a priority on smooth sailing and stability, Inflatable Catamarans are your holiday go to option as they can be driven by engines, sails or a pair of oars.

Oars are used for rowing, and they’re connected to the water vessel via oarlocks or designated pivot points. The difference between a pair of oars and paddles is that paddles are held by the paddlers when propelling the vessel, while oars are connected to watercraft via oarlocks.

With so much to see and do during the holidays and at your leisure, you sure wouldn’t want to miss out on your scheduled adventurous activities. Inflatable catamarans give you the option to go where bigger catamarans/boats would prefer not to, due to sizing and sometimes distance. Take a dive into our top 10 picks for the best kayaking GPSs on the market.

Inflatable catamaran dinghies are geometry stabilized water vessels that derive their stability from their wide beams. They’re unique in size, as their typical size range is between 8 – 14 feet (∼ 244 – 427 cm).  The inflatable catamaran could get slightly larger depending on the specific purpose for which it was created.

They are used for a host of different purposes, of which some include: relaxation & picnicking, sporting, diving/snorkeling, fishing, marine research, and search and rescue. Before we proceed any further, even though inflatable catamarans have excellent maneuverability and are relatively stable, always ensure you’ve got a life vest, or if you’re with the crew, life vests .

Also of important note is, if you’re inexperienced, you shouldn’t try doing this on your own. It’s advisable you have an experienced individual with you before heading out, it’s better safe than sorry.

In addition to inflatable catamarans being very portable and lightweight, they provide a lot of comfort alongside fun. Some important accessories to have handy with your inflatable dinghies or catamarans include anchors, foot pumps, storage covers, oars (or paddles), cart with wheels (for ease of transport from and to the target water location).

Don’t forget to check out our Kayaking Near Me Interactive Map for finding the best kayaking locations near you, and of course our Fishing Near Me Interactive Map as well.

Best 5 Inflatable Catamarans

Arthur

The best examples of the wide range of designs for  inflatable catamarans  come from Sea Eagle, a company in the boat business since 1967.

Sea Eagle is known for making durable and tough inflatable pontoon fishing boats, and they have really outdone themselves with the design of the new FoldCat.

They also make a sailing cat, cleverly named the SailCat, and another exceptional innovation, an inflatable kayak catamaran called the PaddleSki.

Here’s a closer look at all three inflatable catamarans:

Three Types of Inflatable Catamarans

The FoldCat is an awarding-winning design among inflatable pontoon boats. The North American Fishing Club tested it and gave it one of their best scores, a 9.7 out of 10. The catamaran has a folding frame and a full floor riding on twin-pontoons. A built-in motormount lets you add up to 4 hp gas (60 lbs. max weight) or up to 74 lb. thrust electric. Drop a Mushroom Anchor ($49) to keep from drifting, or float with the current, and you’re set for fishing.

Fifteen minutes is all you need to set-up and inflate the SailCat. The catamaran has an easy for beginners to learn  Lateen Rig Sail , with an aluminum mast, center tiller/rudder, and trampoline floor to seat up to 4 people. Because of its dual pontoon hull, the SailCat is a very stable and can move at a good clip when it catches the wind. This 97-lb inflatable sailing catamaran is a good value for less than $1400.

3. PaddleSki

The last example is one that has won over a lot of fans. It is an inflatable kayak catamaran called the Sea Eagle PaddleSki. You might wonder how a kayak could be paired with a catamaran but Sea Eagle pulled it off. They placed the pontoons close together, seated the passengers up high on the deck, and added two skegs underneath for directional stability. The seats mount quickly into the frame and you have a foot rest for support; both of these features are important for safety when going down occasional whitewater. The 395 and the larger 435 PaddleSki serve as multi-purpose boats: you can add a sail, a rowing frame, or small outboard motor on them.

1. Sea Eagle 375fc FoldCat

inflatable catamaran reviews

The first thing you notice about the  Sea Eagle 375fc FoldCat  is its unique folding frame design — a first for a pontoon boat. Once you complete the initial assembly, each time you use it you only need to unroll it, slide the four aluminum stabilizer bars under the slats, then inflate the catamaran’s hulls. That’s it. You’re ready to load your gear and get at those fish.

A Look at the Craft

The  Sea Eagle 375fc FoldCat   has a 4’6″ wide beam on top of two 16″ pontoons to offer incredible stability over a hard hull boat design. The inflatable catamaran can be self-powered or used with a 3 hp 4-cycle small outboard for up to 8 knots or powering upstream loaded with gear. It will also mount an electric trolling motor.

Specifications :

  • Dimensions: 12′ 4″ x 4′ 6″
  • Deflated: 56″ x 21″ x 10″
  • Tube Diameter: 16″
  • Capacity: Two adults (650 lbs)

  • Chambers: Two independent air chambers
  • Material: 1000 Denier Reinforced
  • Seam: Quadruple Overlap Seams
  • Floor: Aluminum slat roll up over full fabric floor
  • Air Valves: Halkey Roberts one way
  • Nylon hull carry bag, and repair kit
  • 2 oars & oarlocks
  • Motormount capacity: 3 hp (45 lbs max weight)
  • Speed Estimates: 8-10 mph with gas, 4-6mph with electric

  • NMMA Certified for safety/construction standards
  • Inflation and Assembly time: 5-15 minutes

T here are four packages to choose from when outfitting the Sea Eagle 375fc FoldCat. The most popular, and best deal, is the Pro Angler package. The  Pro Angler Guide Package  includes everything listed above plus:

  • 2 additional rod holders
  • Two 360° swivel padded seats
  • Quick-release seat mounts
  • AB45 Oar/paddle set
  • Oarlock set

How it Performs

The Sea Eagle 375fc FoldCat weighs  just 75 pounds  so it’s easy to get in and out of the water. It handles two adults plus gear for a combined weight of 650 pounds. The large inflatable pontoons keep the craft riding high in the water and its wide beam design allow it to flex as it rides over choppy water and not rock from side to side like a rigid hull catamaran will. The downside is that the 375fc FoldCat doesn’t track well in a straight line, even with skegs, since the boat is light even when loaded.

The hull material is a heavy-duty 1000 Denier material that is  amazingly puncture resistant  so you don’t have to worry about bouncing the catamaran into jagged rocks, or getting damaged when hauling it in and out of a truck bed, car trunk, RV, or sailboat. Other inflatable pontoons are made with abrasion-resistant PVC bottoms and nylon tops and won’t stand up to such punishment. Sea Eagle’s  patented folding support system  sets up in as little as five minutes, with no bolts and parts to sort through like other pontoon designs.

One of the  best features  of Sea Eagle’s 375 FoldCat is the full floor that allows you and your buddy to move around as well as store gear on the floor. No more uncomfortable straddling with your feet on the pontoons or a front bar! In addition, standing on the deck means better leverage to haul in that big catch as opposed to trying to maintain your balance in a rowboat while fighting a fish.

You’ll Be Hooked

The Sea Eagle 375fc FoldCat is ideal for fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, or just having fun. It’s stable, economical, and  certified for safety and quality  by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. This award-winning inflatable catamaran has scored a rating of 9.7 out of 10 from the North American Fishing Club, America’s oldest fishing organization, and is highly recommended over other pontoon designs.

2. Sea Eagle 440fc FoldCat

inflatable catamaran reviews

The  Sea Eagle 440fc FoldCat  has been given a rating of 9.7 out of 10 by the North American Fishing Club for quality, safety, ruggedness, durability, and price. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

When ordering this inflatable catamaran, you will choose between two packages, the Deluxe or the Pro Angler, the latter includes everything found in the deluxe package plus seat pedestal stands and an upgraded oar set suitable for white water.

The Sea Eagle 440fc FoldCat  Deluxe Package Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 14’3″ x 5’11”
  • Deflated: 74″ x 24″ x 12″
  • Tube Diameter: 18.5″

  • Hull weight: 101 lbs

  • Upgraded AB90 oar set: two 9′ heavy aluminum oars

Options and Accessories:

  • BST Super Turbo Pump ($189)
  • Casting Bar ($159)
  • One seat pkg ($79)
  • Canopy for 440fc ($239)
  • Minn Kota 28 lb thrust motor ($149)

Kicking the Tires

The Sea Eagle 440fc FoldCat sports a unique folding frame, a full floor for standing and casting as well as storing gear, and 360° swivel seats which offer firm back support. The two hefty inflatable pontoons and the wide beam design provide  independent buoyancy  allowing the catamaran to roll over lapping water like a dual suspension, versus rocking up and down at the mercy of swells and waves in a hard-hulled boat.

Another  key feature  of the Sea Eagle 440fc is the 1000 Denier fabric used on the hull that allows the pontoons to take a beating without fear of rips or punctures. That means the FoldCat can survive rough handling such as being dragged over rough rocks on the beach or getting tossed in the bed of a truck, without damaging the air chambers.

Three adults can fish aboard the Sea Eagle 440fc FoldCat and have  elbow room to spare . It’s designed to seat up to four people plus their gear, but that many fishermen aboard makes this boat seems crowded.

Out on a lake, this inflatable catamaran is fairly  easy to navigate  as it zips through calm water. In heavy and persistent chop, it is a bit more difficult to maneuver at speed but not so much that it’s a problem.

New or Used, It’s a Good Choice

If you buy your catamaran direct from the Sea Eagle website, you may have the option of purchasing a used FoldCat saving you about $200. There may be a few cosmetic scratches but the used boats have been tested and inspected for damaged, and come with the same 180-day money back guarantee as a brand new inflatable boat. New or used, the Sea Eagle 440fc FoldCat is a good choice for bass anglers and comes highly recommended.

3. Sea Eagle 14 SailCat

inflatable catamaran reviews

Novices will find that the  Sea Eagle 14 SailCat  is a wonderful catamaran sailboat that is affordable, easy to learn on, and is so portable – it can be assembled in about 15 minutes.

The Sea Eagle 14 SailCat comes in two packages: the  Deluxe that includes the boat, oar set, foot pump, storage bag, two cushions, and a 14-sc Sail Rig; and the  Comfort Package  ($1,499) that includes boat, oars, foot pump, storage bag, two cushions, swivel seat kit, motormount, and 14-sc Sail Rig. Both packages include  Free Shipping  when you buy direct from Sea Eagle.

Basic specifications of the Sea Eagle 14:

  • Exterior Size: 14′ x 5′
  • Interior: 9′ 6″ x 4′
  • Deflated: 60″ x 14″ x 12″
  • Capacity: 4 persons (1000 lbs)
  • Hull weight: 97 lbs
  • Chambers: 2
  • Material: 1000 Denier reinforced
  • Seam: Quadruple overlap
  • Air Valves: Recessed one-way
  • Sail Area: 45 sq ft
  • Wind Rating: 0-25 mph
  • Warranty: 3 years (180-day money back guarantee)
  • Inflation & assembly time: 12 minutes

The SailCat incorporates a patent-pending folding-frame system with 3 aluminum cross- benches and 4 aluminum underbars which supports a trampoline floor for up to 4 passengers. It has  strong 1000 denier material  on its twin 14′ catamaran hulls, a 45 sq. ft. Lateen Rig Sail, and a nautical-grade, anodized aluminum mast.

You Will Experience Success

Sailing and handling wind, water, and sails is a difficult skill set to master. The Sea Eagle 14 SailCat comes with a  Lateen Rig  that even a beginner can learn proficiently in a short amount of time. A Lateen Rig uses just two lines: one to raise the sail and one to trim it. Trimming a sail is working with the wind as it fills the sail, then as the wind changes direction, you must make adjustments depending on which direction you want the boat to go.

With  only one sail to learn , combined with a small manageable dinghy, you will be better able to learn sailing basics. Because of its lightweight rigging, and catamaran hulls that sit high in the water, Sea Eagle’s 14 sailing catamaran is fast and responsive for the new sailor.

Easy Handling In or Out of the Water

At 60″ long deflated, this inflatable sail boat can be strapped to the top of a car or laid down in the back of an SUV with a rear seat folded down. (No trailer required!) The 97-lb hull and rig can be set up fast: inflation and assembly time is only about 12 minutes.

Two Beautiful Words: Risk Free

We recommend you get the less expensive Deluxe package rather than the Comfort package if you don’t think you’ll be adding an electric or gas motor to the SailCat. If you change your mind later, you can buy a  motormount kit  ($49), which you’ll need for attaching a motor to the boat.

The SailCat is a fun and inexpensive way to try out the sport of sailing and see if you fall in love with it. (You will.) You can even  try out the Sea Eagle 14 risk-free for a full 180 days  (that’s 6 months!) starting the day you receive your boat. If sailing isn’t for you, or feel the SailCat doesn’t fit your needs, return the package to Sea Eagle (in good shape, of course) for a full refund. However, if you love this rugged little inflatable catamaran, sail away with the peace of mind that the Sea Eagle 14 SailCat is covered for 3 years with a complete bow to stern warranty.

4. Sea Eagle 395 PaddleSki

inflatable catamaran reviews

The  Sea Eagle 395 PaddleSki  glides through the water with greatly reduced drag thanks to its unique design where only the catamaran pontoons touch the water while occupants sit high, yet it rides like a long kayak.

Specifications of the  Sea Eagle 395 PaddleSki :

  • Exterior: 12’11” x 3′ 3″
  • Interior: 11’6″ x 1′ 4″
  • Deflated: 38″ x 18″ x 9″
  • Tube Diameter: 12 1/2″
  • Capacity: Two adults (500 lbs)
  • Hull weight: 49 lbs
  • Chambers: 2 (port & starboard)
  • Seam: Quadruple Overlap Seam
  • Floor: 2000 Denier Reinforced
  • 2 skegs for directional stability
  • 6 D-Rings to secure seats
  • 3 aluminum crossbars
  • 4 side carry handles; bow handle
  • Carry bag and repair kit
  • Engine capacity: 55 lbs thrust electric
  • Inflation time: 5 minutes

Sea Eagle’s  Ultimate package   has everything the Pro Kayak kit includes, plus a motormount and a pricey Torqeedo Electric Motor. If you want the 395 PaddleSki with a motor, we suggest you get the Pro Kayak package, buy a  PaddleSki Center Motormount separately, and get a less expensive electric motor.

Unique Design – But for What?

Sea Eagle advertises the 395 Inflatable PaddleSki as “5 boats in 1” that can  sail, motor, fish, paddle, and row , but those options work only if you buy add-on packages such as a sail rig, motormount kit, rowing frame, fishing seat, etc.

The Sea Eagle 395 PaddleSki is not a good boat design for a sail and mast, and it is definitely the  wrong boat for serious fishermen . Despite the cool design of the inflatable kayak catamaran combo, the nagging problem with the craft is that is very crowded with two people on board – and once you add any gear it gets piled up pretty quick due to a lack of storage space.

Another option is to use the 395 PaddleSki as a  rowboat . You can add a Rowing Frame & Sliding Seat , but there are better boat choices out there if this is to be your primary use of the craft. Again, the deck has limited space as it is and adding any attachment of this size drastically reduces space for gear.

Unique as a Recreation Boat

Yet, as a  paddle boat , the Sea Eagle 395 PaddleSki is a lot of fun. With its raised kayak-shaped bow and molded skegs on the pontoons, the boat is easy to maneuver with very little drag in the water. The oversized air tubes and wide beam design provides stability, and the aluminum crossbars provide a footrest for going down whitewater or waves.

Despite its lack of focus (or too much effort trying to be a 5-in-1 boat), it is  still a joy to use  this Sea Eagle catamaran. If your desire is to paddle for exercise, hitting the surf, or use for afternoon explorations while camping, then the 395 PaddleSki is definitely worth your consideration. But if you are looking for an inflatable kayak for wilderness trips, get an Explorer kayak, or if you want a fishing catamaran, check out the FoldCat. This combo design is more fun than functional, making the Sea Eagle 395 PaddleSki best suited for situations when you don’t need to carry much (if any) stuff onboard.

5. Sea Eagle 435 PaddleSki

inflatable catamaran reviews

The  Sea Eagle 435 PaddleSki  is a unique design that offers speed in the water and a comfort stance for paddling. With little assembly required, you need only to unfold it, pump it up in 7 minutes, attach the seats — and hit the water!

This inflatable catamaran kayak comes in three equipment packages. The basic  Deluxe package  includes the paddle ski boat, two 7′ 10″ double-ended paddles, a foot pump, and two inflatable seats.

Specifications of the  Sea Eagle 435 PaddleSki :

  • Exterior: 14′ x 3′ 3″
  • Interior: 12’6″ x 1′ 4″
  • Deflated: 38″ x 19″ x 10″
  • Tube Diameter: 14″
  • Capacity: 2 adults (650 lbs)
  • Hull weight: 57 lbs
  • 3 aluminum yokes
  • 2 rear carry handles; bow handle
  • Inflation time: 7 minutes

The  Pro Kayak package  includes everything the Deluxe package offers with the exception of these upgrades: two high performance 8′ AB40 paddles, two high-back seats, and a bow storage bag. The  Ultimate package  ($2,849) is same package the Pro Kayak kit with the addition of a motormount and a Torqeedo Electric Motor.

Key Features of the PaddleSki

The Sea Eagle 435 Paddle Ski is built with  tough 1000 denier material  on its two pontoons that support a tunnel hull, and features three aluminum yokes that serve as stabilizer bars and footrests between the two air chambers. The tall-back seats in the Pro Kayak package add back support, and the 8′ paddles (just 2.75 lbs each) have an asymmetrical spoon design on the blades to improve power to the stroke while lessening fatigue in your arms and shoulders.

What is Your Intended Purpose?

Sea Eagle promotes the 435 PaddleSki as a “5 boats in 1” design but you need to consider how you intend to use an inflatable. The price of the PaddleSki starts at around $1000 and the  cost will increase substantially  when you have to buy a sail rig, rowing frame, or motor. You will find that there are better choices to suite your needs if you are looking for a boat for a specific type of activity — be it a fishing boat, sail catamaran, inflatable kayak, or motormount boat.

That’s not to say it’s a bad choice; in fact, it’s an awesome and well-built inflatable catamaran kayak from a company that has built quality inflatables for 40 years. For fast assembly, ease of use, expert craftsmanship, and seaworthy stability, the Sea Eagle PaddleSki gets two big thumbs up.

But for  lack of room and storage space  on the small deck, and the requirement to buy costly accessories to get “5 boats in 1” — that is a problem. The solution is to leave the gear behind, grab the paddles, and use the Sea Eagle 435 PaddleSki for fun and recreation on lakes or even riding ocean waves.

The quality, durability, toughness, and price make inflatables excellent value for the money. They come in many styles and sizes, and it can be a bit difficult to choose which catamaran is best for your needs. Do your research to see how well these pontoon boats perform on the water in terms of stability, tracking, and maneuverability.

And keep in mind that anything you buy from Sea Eagle comes with a  six-month, no-risk guarantee . If you aren’t completely blown away with your inflatable catamaran, Sea Eagle will give you your money back.

Testimonials

Easiest boat I have ever bought and staff were excellent and very helpful. Absolutely no problem purchasing from Australia and better than anything I could buy in Australia.

Great looking boat I haven't had the time to use the boat yet, but have assembled and inflated the boat. Compared to the Zodiac Granride MK3, it's a lot lighter, and the inflatable deck is much easier then the zodiacs hard deck to get in place. So just from looking at the TrueKit, i think the quality is up at the zodiac level, and looking forward to try out the boat in the water!

We’ve had our boat for a few weeks now, and I can honestly say we love it. It’s super stable and planes easily. It is super light, so loading it correctly matters, but that is super easy to do.

Discovery 330 has exceeded my expectations after my sea trials and break in of my Yamaha F6. Set up with the supplied hand pump worked well. Spring loaded wheels are a must have. Once inflated inspection of the seams and construction confirmed my research that this is a high quality craft that will provide years of enjoyment. After break in of my Yamaha with one person onboard the F6 pushed her along nicely.

Customer Reviews

Was surprised how much better is this boat . Navigates very well Customer service from light as air bots was great .

I got mine last week. I took it on a lake twice and on a river once. So far so good.

I also have an Intex Mariner 3, so I will compare it to that. Both boats are made out of very nice fabric, but the Aircat can handle higher pressure, which makes it feel a lot more solid. The Mariner 3 has an extruded plastic floor, but the inflatable floor of the Aircat feels just as solid. The only downside to the Aircat is that it takes longer to inflate, especially the floor.

I also installed wheels on the transom. I can just walk down to the lake with it.

The open bow makes it very easy to climb back on the boat from the water. It’s great for swimming.

This seems to be a very nice boat for the money. Very nice quality at a very good price.

Super high quality. Kids love it!

Best Inflatable Catamaran And Sailboat Picks In 2022 Reviews

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or simply enjoy having to fight the wind to move around the water, inflatable catamaran sailboats are the thing for you. You can go by yourself if you enjoy your ‘me’ time, or even take your friends or family with you to spend the day sailing around the coast.

This article will let you in on inflatable sailboats and inflatable catamarans, explain what they can be used for and give you some examples of best inflatable sailboats on the market. Those products are chosen based on their specifications and user reviews.

inflatable-catamaran-sailboat

Introduction To Inflatable Catamarans

Are inflatable catamaran sailboats safe.

Unlike traditional boats and similar inflatable boats, inflatable catamarans do not have any physical obstacle to prevent going overboard. There is also the risk of capsizing, so if you’re not comfortable and confident enough, you should not get one of these.

What Can I Use A Blow-Up Catamaran For?

Most people use inflatable sailboats for sailing and leisure. Most are made so that you can attach a motor or even row if there is no wind to push you forward. Inflatable sailing catamarans can also be used as tenders for larger boats and ships.

Where Can I Get An Inflatable Sailboat?

As you will see, this article will provide you with links for the example blow-up sailboats presented in the article. All of the mentioned can be found on Amazon.com, but if you look further you’ll also find them on other websites and specialized stores.

What Are Inflatable Catamaran Boats Made Of?

As science developed, so did the technology surrounding the making of any inflatable vessel. Nowadays, they’re usually made from PVC which can resist UV rays and endure rough conditions. Some manufacturers even use aluminum to give extra strength to their inflatable catamarans.

Best 4 Inflatable Catamarans For Sale Reviews

Best inflatable racing catamaran for sale, smartkat racing edition inflatable catamaran.

Construction And General Info

This inflatable sailing catamaran is made for a crew of up to 4 people. It can be sailed with an optional trapeze, and there is also a 4 Meter Performance Edition of the same inflatable catamaran. The hulls are made of heavy-duty multi-layer PVC and attach to a large diameter anodized aluminum tubular frame which supports the trampoline.

Smartkat Racing Edition Inflatable Catamaran

Sailing Features

The 6’ long trampoline makes a comfortable area that can be used for sailing or just laying around. The three hiking straps along the trampoline lock your feet in when sailing for better stability. You can even use the inflatable sailboat without sails and attach a motor of up to 5 horsepower.

Main Components Of The Inflatable Sailboat

The mast is made of anodized aluminum tubing and has 3 separate sections of equal length. For extra rigidity, it is reinforced in the mid-section. The mainsail and jib are made from heavy-duty Dacron which retains its shape over many years.

Smartkat Racing Edition Inflatable Catamaran review

More On The Main Sail

Because Dacron is used for the mainsail, it provides the sail with great strength, high UV resistance and allows the sails to dry quickly. The mainsail is made with extra ‘X-ply’ laminate in high-stress areas, and also features battens which you can adjust to wind conditions.

  • Up to 4 people
  • Attach a motor
  • 3 hiking straps

Conlusion: Which Inflatable Sailing Catamaran Is Your Pick?

If you are not really into inflatable catamarans and inflatable sailboats, the information mentioned above may seem confusing. But if you dig a bit deeper, you’ll understand what everything means and find a suitable inflatable sailboat for you. Out of the ones mentioned above, I would recommend the Smartkat Racing Edition because it has a longer hull than the Performance Edition and fits 4 people in it. The other blow-up sailboat I would recommend is the Generic 2-Person Inflatable Portable Sailboat because you get a pump and carry bags in the package, which is not found in the Smarkat products.

Introducing the Ultimate Portable Watercraft

THE TAKACAT LX SERIES BOAT LINEUP

Takacat LX Series boats are durable, stable, and designed with smart features that make them a perfect choice for marine professionals and recreational water enthusiasts alike.

Whether you’re looking for a foldable sports boat for fishing or exploring, or need a quality portable tender for your yacht or RV, the Takacat team of lightweight dinghies are a tough, stable, and fun option on any water. The full Takacat lineup features stability, versatility, and lightweight performance for a wide range of uses. The innovative and fully removable Tube Transom® system allows Takacat inflatable tenders to be rolled up into two carry bags for easy transportation and storage.

Big Adventure in an Ultra-Portable Package

The Takacat LX Series boats feature a revolutionary, and completely removable, Tube Transom®. The sleek and minimal Tube Transom® design makes the boat about 15 lbs lighter than traditional inflatable boats. Because the transom can be completely removed, Takacat packs down significantly smaller as compared to other inflatable boats. All Takacat boats can be packed small enough to be checked as baggage on a plane, thrown into bench seat storage, or tossed into an SUV trunk for a weekend adventure — no need for a trailer.

Fast, Stable Catamaran Design for Ultimate Fun

The lightweight, low resistance design of Takacat boats provides quick and level planing, exceptional stability, and fuel economy. The low draft and buoyant inflatable catamaran construction allows for navigation through extremely shallow water and provides the ability to get further up on a beach or ramp before grounding the boat.

Fast-Draining Open Bow and Tube Transom®

The unique Tube Transom® design of Takacat combined with the fully open bow allows the deck to continuously drain. Fast and constant draining keeps the deck dry and prevents water from building up inside the boat, a great advantage when sensitive gear is on board or when towing.

Easy-Entry Open Bow Design

The open bow, raised deck and rigid air deck floor makes boarding passengers and cargo effortless from the beach, dock, and even a larger vessel. Combined with the shallow draft of the boat, entry and exit from the water is just as simple, even for small children and pets.

Durable Hull Tube Construction

All Takacat boat models are available in both PVC and Hypalon fabric construction. Standard tubes are fabricated from durable custom-made 0.9mm, 1000 denier PVC. Digital Camo and Woodland Camo color options are built using thicker 1mm, 1200 denier PVC for extra rub and tear resistance in flooded timber and murky, backcountry water. All models can be custom ordered in Hypalon fabric for exceptional UV protection and resistance to extreme temperatures.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THE TAKACAT LX

Smart and functional design comes standard with every Takacat model. We never settle for second best, and always have high quality design and solid materials as our top priority. It’s who we are, and we're proud of it.

1 The open transom and raised floor keeps the water out and the floor dry. Any water that does find its way in, will go straight out the back.

2 Takacat’s original open bow design provides safety and convenience when entering and exiting. Standard inflatable high-pressure air floor and optional hybrid fiberglass rigid floor both offer an ultra-stable surface for on/off-boarding from land or water.

3 Inner and outer grab lines provide safe handholds so you can sit anywhere.

4 atamaran design makes for efficient and easy rowing while also tracking well, even in a crosswind.

5 Halkey-Roberts fill valve for fast, reliable inflation and deflation. Pressure relief valves prevent over-pressurization when left in the hot sun.

6 Non-skid PVC on the air deck floor makes for slip-free fun! Ultra UV Stabilized, it will not get chalky over time.

1 Aerodynamic tapered bow is designed to ensure you go over the top of rough and choppy waters. It also reduces windage over flared bow designs.

2 Fixed oarlocks and Velcro straps ensure you won’t be up the creek without a paddle!

3 Designed with a single seam on each hull. Seam is sealed using a chemical bonding gluing system and a quadruple overlap of material to ensure airtightness, even after years of folding.

4 Innovative Tube Transom Design has quick attachment points for rod holders and beach launching wheels.

6 Lifting handle at the stern for easy portage, even with a light outboard still attached.

inflatable catamaran reviews

1 Heavy-duty rubber under-tube protection for beaching and transport ease.

2 Extra large diameter tubes for added carry capacity and comfort.

3 Shallow Draft is a huge advantage when navigating shallow water and allows you to get further up the beach or ramp before the hull of the boat grounds.

4 Not a flat bottom. Catamaran hull allows for a lower wetted surface area making Takacat boats much faster with less horsepower.

Permatrim Plate

Lift the power and performance of your Takacat’s gas-powered outboard motor with a Permatrim Hydrofoil. The catamaran design with a single, centralized outboard lends itself to ventilation on higher power outboards. This is more prevalent in the shorter models, but can be brought out on any of the Takacat boats.

We have a remedy to this problem by way of another New Zealand product—Permatrim. This foil plate bolts to the cav plate (the little tongue that sticks out over the propeller) and does a good job of fixing cavitation issues. It also helps get the boat on plane quicker and easier, and reduces splashing from the transom when underway. Fitment Guide:

  • M3 fits 2.5 HP Outboards (All Modern Makes & Models)
  • M4 fits 4 - 6 HP Outboards (All Modern Makes & Models)
  • M5 fits 8 - 30 HP Outboards (All Modern Makes & Models)

Advantages A lot bigger than the other 'standard' inflatable that I have, and also faster. Seems very well built. more Disadvantages A standard-shaft OB motor will not work with this raft. It will cavitate, no matter how far you trim down. I'm using a 1980 Johnson 9.9. So I will either have to find a long-shaft OB motor, or may possibly notch the transom a few inches (Discussing with the manufacturer). more Comment A lot bigger than the other 'standard' inflatable that I have, and also faster. Administrator reply Thank you for your feedback and the great pictures. The new 2023 Saturn Triton catamarans are indeed larger and of greater quality than our prior models, and we appreciate you noticing that. While the transom is custom designed for a short shaft motor, it is possible that certain motors/brands may not perform as well as others. We look forward to continuing to partner with you to help resolve the motor performance.
Comment Steve..just sent you some pics today before the big snow fall tonight...made lifting bridles from new tow straps so they lift from under the tubes worked out great! Cheers Tim Wrangell AK (These photos are now shown on product page) more
Comment I bought this for carrying lumber to remote building sites in Alaska, it's light enough to use the main Halyard to lift it out of the water and place on top of my boat. I will be doing a whole video on YouTube this spring. Steve Susten has delivered on time..as quoted every time....Great Inflatables! more

Sea Eagle FastCat 14 Catamaran Inflatable Boat Review For 2024

Disclosure: I am compensated for purchases made through some links on this site. Click for details .

Have you ever encountered one of those companies that one-ups itself all the time? If you haven’t check out Sea Eagle Boats. They seem to live by the motto Constant and Never-Ending Improvement.

That’s a work ethic I respect! Not only are they coming up with new designs, but they also improve on their tried and true. Some of their boats have been around for decades like the Sea Eagle 9 Inflatable Motormount Boat that’s been around for over 40 years.

In the Spring of 2021, they released the brand new FastCat 12. The first in the new FastCat line of inflatable boats with a catamaran-style hull design.

Now…!

Sea Eagle has released the brand new FastCat 14 Catamaran Inflatable Boat . This impressive boat is over the top! If you bought the FastCat 12, stop reading. You may get boat envy. This bigger badder version of the FastCat 12 may be the most stable inflatable boat on the market!

The Sea Eagle FastCat14 has a catamaran hull design that lifts this 14′ 4″ x 6′ 8″ boat up on top of the water to prevent the hull from slapping on the water. This creates a super-smooth ride for up to four people or 1600 lbs. This boat’s incredibly large deck is perfect for a fun day on the water.

The spacious deck space of the FastCat14 is designed for fishing, swimming, sunning, snorkeling, scuba diving, hauling gear, and extended camping excursions. They can even be used by filing crews. They are that stable!

The durable FastCat14 is also one of the most rugged inflatable boats on the market, made from a double layer of PVC-reinforced 1000 Denier fabric and fully constructed with drop-stitch technology for a high-pressure, rigid, dependable, stable, and high-performance boat.

The FastCat14 can be inflated and assembled in 30 minutes and it’s easy to pack up and stow away in almost any truck bed, SUV, or RV.

Other Sea Eagle inflatable boats that might interest you are the FastCat 12 , PaddleSki Inflatable Catamaran Boats , and Inflatable Sport Runabouts .

Key Features of the Sea Eagle FastCat14 Catamaran Inflatable Boat

Catamaran design.

The Sea Eagle FastCat14 Catamaran Inflatable Boat has a catamaran-style hull design.

The Sea Eagle FastCat14 has a catamaran-style hull design with widely spaced side tubes that create lift to reduce center floor friction on the water.

The catamaran design:

  • Reduces drag and improves speed
  • Improves fuel efficiency
  • Improves balance, stability, and handling
  • Provides an incredible cloud-cushioned ride

High-Pressure, Reinforced, Drop-Stitch Construction

The Sea Eagle FastCat is made from a double-layer of PVC-reinforced 1000 Denier fabric that is drop-stitched together by joining the top and bottom of the floor and sides of the gunwales with tens of thousands of high-tensile strength threads.

The drop-stitch construction allows the boat to be inflated up to 15psi. This high-pressure improves performance and provides remarkable stability, buoyancy, and a rigid floor stable enough to stand and walk around on.

The reinforced double-layer protection allows the FastCat to bounce off rocks, logs, and other objects leaving the extremely durable boat unscathed.

Safety Air Chambers

The Sea Eagle FastCat14 has four rugged, independent, safety air chambers.

With four separate air chambers, the FastCat14 adheres to the highest safety standards (NMMA and CE certified).

In the unlikely event of a chamber failure, the boat will easily stay afloat to ensure your safety and that of any passenger.

Protective Rubbing Strake & Bumper Guard

The Sea Eagle FastCat14 has protective rubbing strakes and side bumper guards.

This rugged inflatable boat has full-length, underside rubbing strakes and side bumper guards for added protection from bumps and abrasions where the boat is most vulnerable.

The custom removable transom improves the storability and portability of the FastCat14 by making it lighter and allowing a smaller folded profile.

Install the transom and attach an electric motor up to a 20 hp outboard and you are ready to glide across the water.

Attach Up To A 20 HP Gas Motor

Hey Steve Hood, was wondering about the non-slip EVA foam deck on the FastCat14. How does it hold up in the sun? Worried about it getting too hot or degrading over time with exposure.

The catamaran design is a game changer for stability! Been on monohulls most of my life, but this makes me want to switch.

Seriously impressed with the 110w Solar Boat Package. Clean energy powering my trips sounds ideal. Anyone got hands-on experience with it?

Not sure about attaching a 20 HP gas motor to these inflatable beauties. Seems counterintuitive to the eco-friendly vibe. Thoughts?

I get your point, but having the option doesn’t mean you always use it. Plus, for longer trips, that motor could be a lifesaver.

Can you fish off it or will a big catch flip you? Trying to imagine wrestling a river monster on that thing.

Love the Quik-Cinch EZ-Attach Bench Seating System idea. Customizable solutions are exactly what I’ve been looking for. Kudos for the innovation!

Portable, transportable – aren’t those just fancy words for ‘it floats’? But hey, if it gets me to those secluded fishing spots, count me in.

Interesting article, Steve. However, I believe the concept of catamarans dates back much further. The ancient Polynesians were the true pioneers of this design, using it for vast oceanic explorations.

How fast can this baby go with a 20 HP motor? I’m all about that need for speed on water.

Finally, a boat that speaks to my chill vibes. Can’t wait to just float and forget the world.

Steve Susten has delivered on time..as quoted every time....Great Inflatables! more

Discover the Top Power Catamarans for 2024

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: September 10, 2024

Power catamarans have seen a surge in popularity, growing both in size and appeal. These cruise-focused yachts offer homelike comfort, fuel efficiency and user-friendly operation, making them a favorite among avid travelers. Their popularity extends to the bareboat charter market for the same reasons.

In this article, we explore the world’s top power catamarans, ranging from a 36-footer ideal for a cruising couple to a 78-footer perfect for entertaining friends and family. The propulsion options are diverse, including outboards, diesel inboards, hybrids, and even all-solar setups.

Top Luxury Power Catamarans

The following power catamarans are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Fountaine Pajot MY44 : A family-oriented cat suitable for long-range cruising and aimed at owner-operators.
  • Silent Yachts 60 : This is a catamaran that can cruise comfortably for long distances using emissions-free solar-electric propulsion.
  • Horizon PC74 : With interior and deck space like a much larger vessel, the PC74 is perfect for cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean.
  • Aquila 36 : This beefy 36-footer is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran.
  • Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat : A spacious design, this vessel fits the volume of a 130-foot-long monohull into just 78 feet of length overall.
  • Horizon PC68 : This cat has a stable ride, long range, volume to spare and intriguing layout options.
  • Two Oceans 555 : An elegantly simple yet luxurious 55-foot custom with the space and amenities of a much larger vessel.
  • Lagoon 630 : From its open salon to its spacious decks, the Lagoon is a comfortable and luxurious platform.
  • Fountaine Pajot MY5 : A midsize cruiser with serious big-boat space for family and friends.
  • Prestige Yachts M8 : The voluminous 65-footer lets owners customize onboard spaces.
  • Aquila 47 Molokai : Calling all anglers: This cat has 60-plus-knot speed and is set up for serious bluewater adventure.

Fountaine Pajot MY44

The  Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent Yachts 60

Solar panels, ocean-crossing range and self-sufficiency define the electric Silent-Yachts 60 power catamaran. If there was any question that the “Tesla moment” has arrived in yachting, the Silent 60 clearly provides a positive response. Consider, for a moment, crossing oceans in silence at 5 to 6 knots without consuming a drop of fuel and never needing to plan your course between fuel stops. Imagine sitting at anchor and running the air conditioning all night, not to mention all the galley appliances plus the washer-dryer, without the hum or fumes from a genset.

Horizon PC74

As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.

“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.

The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the  Horizon PC74  is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36  is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.

With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat

Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the  Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat  is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC68

Multihull yachts ride differently than monohulls, often counteracting the sea’s motion for a smoother, more stable ride. On the Horizon PC68 , sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, and a Humphree stabilization system with blades reduces roll. Horizon uses SCRIMP construction for resin saturation that maximizes strength with an 111,112-pound displacement. And with a 5-foot-4-inch draft, the PC68 invites island cruising.

Two Oceans 555

With 27-knot speed, house-like volume, an on-deck master and top-tier tech, the Two Oceans 555 is a formidable power catamaran. Dave Jirikovic of HMY Yachts was on a quest. The sales broker was looking for the meanest, nastiest patch of Gulf Stream he could find to show a potential client what the Two Oceans 555 power cat could handle. And just as he had intended to show us, the broad-shouldered power cat didn’t even notice. He even dropped the single-lever throttles back to idle and left the 25-foot-wide Two Oceans 555 beam-on to another set of square-edged seas. The 55-footer brushed that off too. Jirikovic tried quartering into the seas—never a happy angle for catamarans—and the yacht drowsed through them.

Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the  Lagoon 630 MY  burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.

Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The flybridge deck on the Fountaine Pajot MY5 is a standout feature, offering virtually unobstructed 360-degree ocean views and an elevated beach club vibe. Aft of the off-center starboard helm is a spacious area perfect for entertaining, complete with a wet bar, refrigeration center, and ample seating. It’s the most popular space aboard according to the builder. And if the weather turns for the worse, a second helm station in the saloon allows the skipper to pilot the MY5 in climate-controlled comfort.

Prestige Yachts M8

How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8 , at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

Aquila 47 Molokai

With every boat, there’s an origin story. In the case of the Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, it starts with MarineMax, which saw people renting boats for bareboat charters. MarineMax Vacations was born. After experimenting with several production yachts, the company decided to build its own: the Aquila line, designed for charter as well as for sale to owner-operators.

This New Solar-Electric Catamaran Comes With a Massive, Fold-Down Beach Club

Cosmopolitan Yachts just unveiled an electrifying new catamaran.

The simply named Cosmopolitan 125 spans, you guessed it, 125 feet, making it the largest model in the burgeoning Spanish yard’s five-strong lineup. The zero-emission newcomer is also equipped with a hybrid solar-electric propulsion system that makes it cleaner and more efficient on the high seas than traditional diesel-powered yachts of a similar size.

This New 161-Foot Explorer Yacht Offers 6 Days of Autonomy at Sea

The 125 features a lightweight aluminum exterior and sleek, modern lines. With a focus on sustainable luxury, the cat is replete with innovative, eco-friendly materials and the latest green technologies. Solar panels have been integrated into the rooftop, for instance. The yard didn’t share exact specs but says the yacht can traverse the seas sans emission at a cruising speed of 10 knots.

Described as a floating haven by Cosmopolitan, the multihull has an impressive interior volume of 500 GT and offers nearly 6,500 square feet of deck space. The living quarters are replete with “state-of-the-art amenities and luxurious finishes,” according to the yard.

The spacious layout includes four VIP guest cabins, one owner’s suite with a private terrace, three crew cabins, and a captain’s cabin. The guest accommodation is spread across the lower and main decks, while the owner’s cabin can be positioned on either the main deck or the bridge deck. The crew quarters are located on the lower deck, along with the crew mess, galley, and laundry.

The 125 offers more than just a place to sleep, of course. The main deck is home to a large living room with a TV and game area, while the upper deck is outfitted with a giant dining area and bar. A second bar and a gym can be found on the lower deck. Alfresco lounges are positioned forward and aft, while a helipad sits on the uppermost deck.

One of the standout features of the 125 is the beach club. The innovative platform is fitted with expandable terraces that open directly over the water to transform the stern into what Cosmopolitan calls “a private waterfront resort.” The sprawling space, which affords guests direct and easy access to the sea, can be used for sunbathing, swimming, or sundowners.

Cosmopolitan Yachts was founded by Christian Braun and Iván Salas Jefferson in 2021. Based in Barcelona, the yard specializes in custom aluminum catamarans with highly efficient electric propulsion systems. The range currently includes four models ranging from 70 to 111 feet and, of course, the electrifying new 125.

Senate leaders ask FTC to investigate AI content summaries as anti-competitive

A group of Democratic senators is urging the FTC and Justice Department to investigate whether AI tools that summarize and regurgitate online content like news and recipes may amount to anticompetitive practices. In a letter to the agencies, the senators, led by Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), explained their position that the latest AI features are hitting creators and publishers while they're down. While a traditional search result or news feed links may lead users to the publisher’s website, an AI-generated summary keeps the users on the original search platform, where that platform alone can profit from the user’s attention through advertising and data collection.

SpaceX has launched its most public and aggressive offensive against regulators to date, with a blog post published Tuesday urging more expeditious launch licensing — lest the country lose its place as the leader in the global space race. Rockets that operate commercial services regularly, like SpaceX’s workhorse Falcon 9 rocket, do so under a blanket vehicle operator license.
