BIG SKY Yacht for Sale
Not for sale or charter to U.S. residents while in U.S. waters.
The 157-foot (48m) Oceanfast luxury motor yacht BIG SKY is outfitted with an exceptional outdoor living area and a spacious interior that ensure she is ideal for entertaining on the water.
Built in 2010 and refitted in 2018, BIG SKY is in impeccable condition. In 2020, she received her 10-year Lloyds and Class Surveys. BIG SKY features Quantum zero speed stabilizers to ensure comfort while aboard. She features a shallow draft making her ideal for cruising in The Bahamas and other low-lying islands. BIG SKY has a solid charter history and offers a tested platform for future chartering if her new owner is so inclined.
BIG SKY’s 2018 refit focused on her interior spaces. Her owner commissioned Alder & Tweed Design Co. to collaborate in crafting new built-in furnishings and loose furniture for the main deck and skylounge spaces. The guest accommodations also were refinished and rearranged to create an ideal layout for guest enjoyment. The yacht also benefitted from all new soft goods.
The main salon features large aft sliding glass doors that provide ample natural light and offer impressive views. This comfortable space is perfect for pre-dinner cocktails or evening movies and relaxation. This newly minted space features modern touches and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Forward is a formal dining area with custom artwork. The master stateroom is found forward on this deck with a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom with a deep sculptural tub. Additional guest accommodations aboard BIG SKY are found below deck. Three queen staterooms and one full stateroom with a Pullman welcome guests. Each is outfitted with en-suite facilities.
The yacht’s skylounge features a full, custom wet bar and opens to the aft dining table that easily welcomes 12 for a meal. Paola Lenti furniture farther aft is perfect for cocktail hour or lounging during the day. This space can be rearranged to be utilized for a multitude of different functions. The main deck aft also features a cocktail area and accesses the yacht’s swim platform, which is perfect for launching the water toys or taking a dip. BIG SKY’s sundeck is a big draw, offering a Jacuzzi and large sun pads well suited for spending the day soaking up the rays. A full bar and a comfortable lounge also are found on this deck. Yachts in your shortlist Mike Lynch’s Sunken Superyacht Is Largely Intact, Italian Officials SayI talian investigators searching the wreckage of the Bayesian superyacht said it appeared largely intact, a discovery that contradicts earlier eyewitnesses who said its mast had snapped when it sank in Monday’s storm. Divers are reporting that the 180-foot-long yacht was lying on its side on the ocean floor, an Italian coast guard official said Wednesday. “The divers are looking for structural damage on the hull,” the official said. The early reports from Italian officials appeared to be at odds with witnesses who had said the aluminum mast snapped during a violent thunderstorm when the vessel sank off the coast of Sicily with 22 people on board, including owner Mike Lynch, a U.K. tech billionaire. The towering mast on the Bayesian stretched nearly 240 feet into the sky—making the superyacht the tallest luxury sailboat when it was built. Maritime experts said a broken mast of that height could cause serious damage to a vessel, but the design isn’t a safety concern as long as the masts are well maintained and held tightly upright on the hull by cables called stays. “Bigger masts support bigger sails and higher sailing speeds,” said Takis Tsakos, a veteran captain who also oversees for clients the construction of superyachts such as the Bayesian at yards in Europe and the U.S. “The yacht fans love the bigger masts because they look marvelous and give the vessel more volume. They are especially impressive at night when they are lit up.” The Bayesian’s mast could have fallen on the hull, damaging it, or could have been uprooted from its base by the strong winds if the stays weren’t tight enough. Yacht captains say loose stays can make a boat tilt as much as 15 degrees even with the sails folded. “That would have made a gaping hole and water could have rushed in. It was also a relaxed evening—doors and windows could have been open with more water coming in as the boat tilted,” said Tsakos, founder of Athens-based Yachtways GP, which rents out luxury yachts in the Mediterranean. “These will be determined when the yacht is pulled out of the water.” The people missing and presumed dead in the sinking of the Bayesian include Lynch, his daughter, a top executive at Morgan Stanley and one of Lynch’s lawyers. The group was celebrating Lynch’s acquittal on U.S. fraud charges. Italian authorities are continuing to investigate the accident and divers are trying to access the sunken hull. Rescue teams located five bodies from the wreck on Wednesday. The body of the boat’s chef was retrieved from the sea on Tuesday. Masts must meet the safety standards of classification societies that give the green light for a ship to sail and monitor its maintenance over the years. Oversize masts on superyachts are turned by computer so they face the wind straight on and not sideways even when the sails are folded. “For a vessel of this size to go down, there must have been tremendous ingress of water inside its enclosed spaces,” said Fotis Pagoulatos, a naval architect who has participated in a number of shipwreck investigations. “Its design allows it to stay afloat, even with two compartments flooded.” He said he wouldn’t be surprised if the yacht’s hull is found cracked and buckled from the forces exerted by the freak weather and possibly the cracked mast. The single-masted Bayesian was built by Italian company Perini Navi and delivered in 2008 to its original owner. The boat, which was taller than it was long, was one of a class of supersize luxury yachts that cruise the Mediterranean and other hot spots. Formerly known as Salute, it was one of several that Perini Navi built that was 56 meters long. But its sister ships had shorter masts—generally extending 59 meters, compared with about 72 meters for the Bayesian. Perini Navi didn’t return requests for comment. The Bayesian has been eclipsed by newer boats owned by other billionaires. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon.com founder, commissioned the 127-meter-tall Koru, a three-masted vessel that was delivered in 2023. The Koru was so tall that in 2022 it sparked a protest over plans to dismantle a bridge to let it sail out of the Dutch port where it was built. Instead, the ship was towed to another shipyard to have its masts mounted. Still, the Bayesian remained one of the largest private sailing yachts. It was ordered by a Dutch businessman but, in 2005, he was paralyzed in a yachting accident and it was sold on completion to another Dutch owner and renamed Salute, according to yacht brokers. In 2014, it was sold to an entity owned by Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, and renamed Bayesian. It has no racing history, but boats of this size compete in events such as the St Barths Bucket Regatta, an annual race in the Caribbean, and in the Perini Navi Cup, a four-day race near Sardinia. Perini Navi is known for creating some of the world’s most famous and luxurious sailing yachts, including the 88-meter-long Maltese Falcon, one of the world’s most recognizable sailing yachts, with rotating masts and a futuristic design. The masts of the Maltese Falcon are 57 meters tall. Write to Costas Paris at [email protected] The global authority in superyachting
48m Oceanfast motor yacht Big Sky soldThe 48 metre Oceanfast motor yacht Big Sky , listed for sale by Wes Sanford and Ann Avery at Northrop & Johnson , has been sold in an in-house deal. A spec build by the Australian superyacht yard Oceanfast , she was launched in 2010 in what the yard hoped would be a new range of mid-sized superyachts. Unfortunately, launching into the teeth of the Global Economic Crisis put paid to that dream, but she nevertheless remains a rather special superyacht. Big Sky provides spacious accommodation for 10 guests in five well-appointed guest suites including a master suite on the main deck, plus three double VIP cabins and one twin guest cabin on the lower deck, featuring contemporary styling throughout. All cabins have en suite bathrooms. A 2018 refit focused on her interior spaces. Her owner commissioned a team of designers to collaborate in crafting new built-in furnishings and loose furniture for the main deck and skylounge spaces. The full beam main saloon makes maximum use of its vast space with oversized windows allowing ample natural light to flood into this area devoted to relaxing, dining and entertaining. There is ample room for an intimate dinner or large party on the teak soled aft deck while complementing the sun deck entertainment area is a Jacuzzi spa, sun pads and a bar under a custom hard top, offering total privacy. Twin 1,330hp MTU engines give her a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 12 knots and she is fitted with Quantum zero speed stabilisers. Big Sky was asking $9,900,000. We're ending our live coverage for this evening but here is a recap of what we know:
Monday 19 August The Bayesian yacht, flying a British flag, sinks at around 5am local time when the area was hit by a tornado. Fifteen people are rescued from the 56 metre vessel - including a mother and baby - but another seven remain missing. One body, later confirmed to be the yacht's chef Recaldo Thomas, is found near the wreck. It emerges that British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah are among six people that remain missing. Tuesday 20 August The search continues for the six tourists missing. It is reported that among those missing are Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo. Police divers try to reach the hull of the ship, resting at a depth of 50 metres. Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco say early inspections of the wreck were "unsuccessful" because of limited access to the bridge and furniture obstructing passages. The operation is later described as "complex", with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts. Tributes pour in for Mr Thomas, with his friend Gareth Williams saying: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit." Wednesday 21 August The search for the six people unaccounted for enters a third day, with crews carrying out inspections of the yacht's internal hull. A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) arrive in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking. A helicopter is drafted in to help with the search effort and remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search. Five bodies are found inside the yacht on Wednesday afternoon. Only four of them are brought to shore. Body bags are seen being taken to Porticello in the afternoon where dozens of emergency services staff wait. Searches finish for the day just before 7.30pm. Thursday 22 August The search resumes for the remaining missing person. The body of the fifth missing person, found but not recovered the previous day, is brought to shore. A fire service boat with flashing blue lights returns with a blue body bag to the port of Porticello just after 8.45am local time on Thursday. Tributes pour in for Mr Lynch and Mr and Mrs Bloomer after they are identified as having died. The search is called off at around 8pm in Sicily, with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday. Friday 23 August The search continues for the final person missing from the wreck of the Bayesian, Hannah Lynch. Vincenzo Zagarola, of the Italian Coastguard, says the search for Hannah has not been "easy or quick", comparing the sunken yacht to an "18-storey building full of water". The coastguard confirms in the late morning that her body has been found. A green body bag is brought to the port of Porticello from the site of the sinking. A spokesperson announces on behalf of the Lynch family that they are "devastated" and "in shock" after the deaths of Mike and Hannah. Hannah's sister Esme pays tribute to her "little angel". Saturday 24 August A press conference is held in the court of an Italian town, Termini Imerese. Public prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio tells reporters that his office has opened an initial investigation against unknown persons into manslaughter and negligent shipwreck. As the focus now turns to the manslaughter investigation, here's another reminder of the seven victims of the sinking and the 15 people who survived. A close friend of the Lynch family has added to the chorus of tributes for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died in Monday's superyacht sinking. Susannah Gurdun, who lives in Suffolk, recalled being "daunted" when she first met Mr Lynch at a dinner party, before discovering he was "so much more than the corporate cliche". "He was riveting. He was funny, and kind, and endlessly interesting; capable of talking about anything and everything," she said. Ms Gardun said the businessman also had a "thrilling ability" to make complicated subjects "accessible to those of us less blessed with a science acumen". "In particular, he was wonderful with children. I will never forget hearing him explain to a group of them - including our ten year old son - the physics of why the sky went pink at sunset," she said. She went on describe Mr Lynch as a "true genius" and "phenomenal creative". Ms Gardun said his daughter Hannah was also showing "serious literary promise", and added that it was "beyond tragic that we will never know where her own particular brilliance might have led". "I still feel blessed to have shared that time with them in Spain. Not just because I witnessed Mike’s incredible storytelling; but because I was given a chance of understanding what that moment said about all four of them as a united vibrant loving family," she said. "He was an extraordinary human being and it was - truly - a privilege to have known him." A yacht crew member who survived the sinking has paid tribute to Hannah Lynch, calling her a "diamond in a sea of stars". Sasha Murray, chief stewardess of the Bayesian, has released a statement after divers recovered the final missing body from the wreckage, which is believed to be 18-year-old Hannah. "Those who knew her will know that Hannah was a diamond in a sea of stars," she said. "Bright, beautiful and always shining. What most people may not have seen was the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything. "While swimming with them she often said, if anything ever happened she would save them. "I have no doubt that the Irish, Latina fire that burns in her soul kept that spirited determination alive." Ms Murray's statement comes as a new image of Hannah Lynch and her father Mike Lynch is released: Prosecutors announced in this morning's news conference that they have opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation. Officials were unable to answer several queries from the media, saying they needed time to establish the facts, but what are the key questions facing prosecutors? Why weren't passengers who remained on board the vessel warned about escaping from the yacht? The prosecutor in charge of the case, Raffaele Cammarano, suggested that some passengers may have been asleep when others were awake. Asked why they were not woken up or alerted, he said that is something investigators are trying to work out from the statements of the survivors. He called it an "essential" part of the inquiry. Why were several of the passengers in one cabin? The press conference heard several bodies onboard the sunken yacht were found in a single cabin which was not theirs. Mr Cammarano said investigators currently do not know the reason for them being discovered in the same cabin. The chief of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the yacht pinned to the right and suggested people tried to go on the other side, taking refuge in cabins in the higher part of the wreck. Why did the boat sink? The vessel had been deemed "unsinkable" by its manufacturer - Italian shipyard Perini Navi. The Bayesian was hit by a downburst, according to Mr Cammarano, which are powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground. Officials will look into the safety equipment on the sunken vessel. Mr Cammarano was asked about whether there is a black box and if the hatches were left open. He said investigators do not have exact information about the black box and that the first phase of the inquiry will look into it. Why were nearby vessels not similarly affected? Another yacht, the Sir Robert BP, was about 150 to 200 metres from the Bayesian when extreme weather hit. Its crew helped to rescue 15 people from the stricken vessel. Italian officials said they would be looking at how the downburst could affect one vehicle and not other nearby vessels. What weather warnings was the Bayesian alerted to? Maritime director of western Sicily, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macauda, said the weather at the time of the yacht's sinking was abnormal and there was nothing to suggest such an extreme situation would arise. He said there were forecasts of winds and a storm alert, but there was no warning of a tornado. "Given that the conditions were such, there wasn't anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising," he said. "There are vessels that can monitor, after all, these events and one would have thought that the captain had taken precautions." How long will it take to recover the sailing vessel? Mr Macauda could not confirm how long it would take to retrieve the shipwreck of the sunken yacht. "Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe of the retrieval of the wreck and of course all that has to be submitted to the port authorities and in parallel of course there will be the inquiry results and it's only really then that we will be able to authorise the operation," he said. "I can't say, like some experts who have already spoken on the subject, [said] that it will be eight weeks." He made clear that the owners will bear the full cost of retrieval, although he could not estimate the figure. Italian authorities detailed the challenging and meticulous rescue operation to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck (see 9.18am post). But why was the five-day search so difficult? One of the main updates from prosecutors was that they have opened manslaughter and shipwreck investigations after the deaths of seven people in the Bayesian sinking. Watch the announcement below... Prosecutors have given a lengthy news conference this morning on their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian. Read the full report on the prosecutors' probe below... Marine investigator James Wilkes has been speaking to Sky News after this morning's press conference. "Naturally, there are more questions than there are substantive answers at the moment - that's the nature of investigative work. "Something forced that yacht to roll beyond its nominal stability limits, such that it wasn't able to right itself with the ingress of a certain amount of seawater that was coming into the yacht. "So the investigators are going to ask themselves one initial question - what must the conditions have been for this to happen? "Then they are going to look at the contributing factors to the yacht, sinking, and, and the unfortunate loss of life." Prosecutors said this morning that the future of the investigation is reliant on recovering the wreck. Mr Wilkes said the yacht is a "major piece of physical evidence in and of itself." "It's lying at 50 metres, which is a recoverable depth. "If it was significantly deeper, then I'm not sure they'd be considering salvage at this stage or certainly, the salvage question would be a lot more complicated to answer. "But if there was the ability to raise that yacht in one piece safely, then it gives the investigators physically more to look at." Mr Wilkes said he was unsure if the yacht would have a "black box" - called a voyage data recorder in shipping. "It would record things like GPS position, heading speed, engine telemetry, whether the radars were on, what they were recording, alarms, communications from the yacht itself, any audio on the bridge. "But more often than not, these are on merchant ships. The yacht was a commercial yacht in the sense that it could be chartered out so it's quite possible it has a voyage data recorder on, but I'm not sure that it does. I don't know that as a matter of fact," he said. The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived. Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage. Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board. Advertisement What happened?Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored. Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard. Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello. Who was on board?Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch, sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a US fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale. A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived. Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s US lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11. Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial. Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market. “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement. Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived. The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity. One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef. What is the Bayesian? The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week. Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man. The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy. What is a waterspout?Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water. According to the US National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic. Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website. While scientists haven't attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months. Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely. Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer, and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20 percent higher than the global average. How rare is it for a huge sailboat like this to capsize?Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events. “This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing. Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel. “When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in. It would take a couple minutes and that would be it." What happens next?As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened. Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly. The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo. Corder reported from The Hague, Netherlands. Associated Press writer Sylvia Hui in London contributed to this report. |
