Pakleni islands off the coast of Hvar seem to have been created for anchoring, as was the nearby ACI Marina Palmižana (+385 (0) 21 744 995) with 180 berths. The nearby Vinogradišće cove offers the possibility of buoy berths (concessionaire Đenko Meneghello +385 (0) 91 171 82 42), and in addition to providing protection from almost all winds except the south, is locally famous for a spectacular number of excellent restaurants to visit by boat .

If you are aiming towards Vis, make sure to stop at Budikovac, beloved for its turquoise lagoon whose depth rarely exceeds 2 meters. One of everyone’s favorite coves on the island is Stončica, where buoys have been set up to welcome yachts, and the same concessionaire (Gradina Vis +385 (0) 21 711 121) offers buoys in the town of Vis, where boaters have 100 berths at their disposal.

In Komiža , 30 boats can be moored on the waterfront (SDZ Port Authority +385 (0) 21 339 825), and 60 buoys have been set up in Komiža Bay (Komiža Nautical Center +385 (0) 21 713 215). Contact the Komiža Nautical Center if you decide to visit the Mezoporat cove on the island of Biševo, where 20 buoys have also been set up.

The southeastern side of Vis and a range of incredibly beautiful islands are only a dozen nautical miles away. We suggest that you first drop your anchor in Stončica, a sandy cove with turquoise water, and take a walk to the nearby lighthouse, among the beautiful in the Adriatic. In its immediate vicinity to the east lies Smokova cove, where even in the high season there aren’t too many boats, and which is known as an ideal destination for playing picigin, a highly addictive local ball game.

A local celebrity Andro Slavić lives in Budikovac all year round, where he has a real small ranch and a uniquely imaginative restaurant.

The next day, as soon as the sun approaches its zenith, let the magical colors of the Green Cave on the neighboring island of Ravnik spill over you. After that, visit another island delight – Srebrna beach, whose name – silver – is a misnomer, as the this cove boasts the most beautiful white pebble beach.

Sailing along the southern shores of Vis in the direction of sunset, you’ll find it hard to choose where to drop your anchor. Ruda cove lures with its almost Caribbean shades of blue, Mala and Vela Travna with imaginative configurations of rocky shores and silky miniature pebble bottoms, and the famous Stiniva is a true masterpiece of Mother Nature. Split first came to prominence in around AD 295 when the Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered a palace built there. Diocletian's Palace remains an important part of the city to this day even after a number of other empires have ruled over the city over the last two Millennia.

The Venetians owned Split over the city for more than 350 years, then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the French and then of course Tito’s Yugoslavia until the late 1980’s. Diocletian’s Palace remains an important part of the city, untouched in the civil war and the destruction of Yugoslavia in the early 1990’s. As such this historic port is an almost unspoiled Mediterranean port that is worthy of a stay for a day or two, even before heading off on a luxury yacht charter.

Explore Split By Renting A Boat or Yacht

You can sail to Brac Island and Solta Island that lie an easy few hours sailing away from the ACI Marina Split, and can give you a taste of the best the Adriatic has on offer shortly after leaving port and an easy shakedown cruise on the sailing yacht. Another historic port on the Dalmatian Coast is Trogir, again a short day sail from the city along the bay.

On a typical sailing holiday you can mix and match between cities and towns, laid back anchorages and busy marinas as you go, taking in everything from barbecues on deserted beaches to full blast nightlife the feeling takes you.

Thanks to its position in the middle of the Adriatic Coast, Split is a great place to start a yacht charter heading south through the islands and along the Croatian coast towards Dubrovnik. Many a yacht charter up the Adriatic Sea is a one way trip, taking in the islands to the west as you hop from port to anchorage on your journey.

Skippered and fully crewed yacht charters also follow this route, with you just a passenger while taken by sea to some of the best spots known to those running the boat.

The holiday hotspot of Hvar is just a couple of days’ sailing from Split too. You will encounter the best nightlife in the region as well as some fantastic beaches. On an itinerary such as this you would loop back to Split at the end of your trip.

Heading north, Kornati Island is a national park with unique geology and wildlife, and are worth a visit for a day or more.

Around 50% of the marinas in Croatia are run by the state-owned ACI Marina company. These are of a good standard, though you should be aware that on some of the remoter islands shore power and water might be limited. ACI Split is where most sailboat charters leave from, though Trogir Marina is not far from Split Airport – you can include Split as part of your planned itinerary from there.

Where you can sail to or hire a boat to travel in the nearby area

If you have an eight day yacht charter (Saturday to Saturday) then you can head south to Dubrovnik and loop back or north to the Pula peninsula and return.

On a bigger, faster vessel like a motor boat or superyacht you could visit much of the coast of Croatia from north to south – it isn’t a very big country, though there are 2,000 islands to visit!

How To Get To Split

There are regular flights from several British airports to Split.

From the UK you can fly direct from Bristol, Belfast, Glasgow, London (Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton), Newcastle, and Manchester. It is also possible to fly to Venice and then on to Split from there.

The airport is 23km from the main city and a taxi costs around £30 for the trip. There are shuttle buses into the city centre from the airport too – these can save you money but you will still have to get from the bus station to the ACI Marina Split for the sailboat charter.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Split

Broadly there are two ways you can take a charter out of Split. The first is a one-way trip south to Dubrovnik, taking in the islands and coastline as you go.

The second is a loop route. Heading south over 6-8 days it is possible to head down to Dubrovnik and then island hop north via Vis island, Hvar Town and Stari Grad, either staying on a mooring buoy or going alongside at a town quay as you head back to Split.

Heading north you can take in the Kornati Island national park and head as far north as the original Dalmatian capital of Zadar before looping back south.

Trogir Marina is a little closer to Split Airport than ACI Split so you could include the city as a stop on similar routes north or south.

A typical day’s sail could be up to 35 miles though can be as few as 15. On a sailing monohull this would amount to 3-7 hours sailing daily though on a quick motor yacht you can cover a greater distance and spend more time exploring ashore.

Types Of Boats and Yachts To Hire In Split

Broadly there are four types of boat you can hire in Split – the motor cruiser, monohull sailboat , catamaran and speedboat.

Ranging from a 50 metre-plus fully crewed superyacht to a 15 metre bareboat, motor cruisers are a comfortable and fast way of getting around the coast and islands of Croatia. The larger ones will have all manner of toys from jet skis to racing yachts aboard, and plenty of entertainment space to enjoy sunsets (and sunrises!) in good company.

Monohull sailing boat

The workhorse of the sailboat charter fleet, monohull sailboats do the job in comfort – though not at a ripping pace. Better at getting to windward than a sailing catamaran, you’ll likely find yourself under sail more often on a loop route than on a cat. Don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry, but that’s part of the fun of sailing! Available for as little as €120 a day at the basic end you can have a great sailing holiday for a group of six adults at a good price – though you can pay a lot more for extra comfort and space.

Sailing catamaran

Much quicker downwind than a monohull, sailing catamarans can be fun and fast – but extremely comfortable and spacious at the same time. Expect en suite heads in every cabin and plenty of entertainment space below. The twin engines will more than make up for the leeway that makes these less handy to windward.

Not for spending the night on, speedboats are still a fun way to explore the Croatian coastline and islands. You can hire one for a day or half-day and blast about the sea, enjoying the sunshine and cool sea breezes with the wind in your hair.

The sailing holiday season in Split runs from April to October. Marinas charge around 20% extra in July and August and can be very busy – if you can avoid these months then it will be cheaper and quieter.

Yacht Charter Split

Split is one of the most popular yacht charter bases in Croatia . A major tourist, commercial and cultural center, it is located in central Dalmatia and is the second largest city in Croatia.

From Split you can sail south to the islands of Brac, known for its Zlatni Rat Beach, long and pebbly; Hvar, the Adriatic’s glitzy party island which has a great culinary scene and Vis, with its Roman ruins and crystalline waters. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it was constructed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian and was an opulent and heavily fortified palace fronting the sea. It now forms about half the old town of Split.

Connections

Split is a transport hub and is connected via the Adriatic coastal road to Dubrovnik and by highway to Zadar , Zagreb and Rijeka. The bus station is next to the ferry port in the center of town and connects Split with Dubrovnik, Sibenik, Zadar, Rijeka and Zagreb. There is also a train station with lines to Sibenik, Zadar and Zagreb.

There are ferry lines to Rijeka and Dubrovnik, as well as to the islands Solta, Brac, Hvar, Vis, Veliki Drvenik and Mali Drvenik, Korcula and Lastovo. International ferry lines connect Split with Ancona, Pescara and Bari via Dubrovnik.

Split International Airport is 25 kilometers northwest of Split. There are direct daily flights to Zagreb and many European cities. Special bus lines connect the Split airport and the centre of Split, several times per day.

The waters in this region pose no major problems for navigation and are suitable for beginners. Sailing conditions are ideal; the prevailing winds are the friendly Maestral from the North West, the Bora from the North East, and Sirocco and Jugo winds from the South/South East. Split Yacht Charter Enquiry

Just a brief note to let you know we had a great week aboard the Lady Thuraya. The yacht is in great condition, everything appears as new the furnishings are tasteful and comfortable and all the fixtures worked perfectly well. The navigation equipment also appears state of the art, looks like the renovation was extensive and very complete. But what really made our stay most enjoyable was the crew, always ready and anticipating our every desire, attentive to the smaller details, always a smile on their face and a genuine interest in providing us with an unforgettable experience while giving us all a great sense of safety and security with their professional attitude and ease of maneuvering the sailboat even into the tightest of mooring spots. The food was delightful and light, impecably served, totally appropriate for the heat we experienced; pity that Frans will not make a career of cooking on yachts! Bravo! A Memorable 7-Day Yacht Charter Adventure in Croatia, Starting from Split

Day 1 – split to hvar.

Head toward the Hvar island, one of the prettiest and most visited towns in the whole Adriatic. On our way, we will find some hidden lagoons of the archipelago Pakleni Islands and swim in the crystal blue sea. You can have lunch on one of the islands or anchor immediately in Hvar. Short relax before you stroll in the town, explore the town, restaurants, and bars Hvar has in its rich entertainment offer.

Day 2 – Hvar

We are staying for one more day in the phenomenal town of Hvar, as there is more beauty to explore – you can explore the fortress overlooking the harbor, enjoy the splendid view from the top of Hvar, enjoy gastronomic experiences, sail to hidden and secluded lagoons, do snorkeling diving, kayaking and/or other water activities.

Your next destination is the loveliest medieval town on the islands in Croatia –the charming Korčula. Korčula town seems to be where time stands still; you will be amazed at its simplicity and beauty. You can do many things while in Korcula: experience wine tasting in one of the famous vineries, rent quads and do the inland tour, or rent a jet-ski and kayaks to explore the island from the sea,… In recent years, the gastro-enology scene and nightlife have flourished so you can explore unique places, such as Michelin-recommended restaurant Lešić Dimitri Palace. The night will be spent in a marina in the old city.

It is a day to visit the island of Lastovo, an island of untouched and extremely beautiful nature, genuine heaven for lovers of nature, sailing, good food, wine, fish, and much more. Before arriving in Lastovo, indulge yourself in the crystal clear waters of Saplun islet and have lunch or dinner in the fantastic Augusta Insula restaurant. Lastovo is also known as the best place in Adriatic to eat lobsters.

Setting off from Lastovo in the morning, we will have our breakfast on board. Afterward, we recommend swimming in unique bays, perhaps jumping into the idyllic transparent sea at Stiniva Cove, surrounded by massive limestone walls, a fantastic place! We plan to arrive at Vis in the afternoon. For the evening, you stay in the town of Vis, where you can eat in good seafood restaurants or visit some inland country-style taverns. The evening as well as the night, can be spent in Komiža.

Day 6 – Solta

The plan for this day will be to visit the magnificent Modra Špilja (Blue cave), one of the most extraordinary caves in the world because of the bright blue glowing phenomenon that happens around noon, so we will plan to be there on time to experience it. After that, we sail towards the island Šolta. The untouched nature of Šolta and the surrounding islands still offers hidden private coves rarely found today. Short stop for swim and snorkeling before reaching the port of Maslinica on the island’s west side. You can have dinner at the beautiful sun terrace of the famous castle/restaurant Martinis Marchi, overlooking the bay.

On our way to Split in the morning, we can visit Blue Lagoon on Krknjaš island, have a fresh seafood lunch, and spend our last day on the water. In the afternoon, we sail towards Marina Split, our home base. We recommend a short dynamic tour of 1700 years old Diokletian’s palace for the last evening. The old city, beautiful as ever, will charm every visitor. After dinner in the city, an evening walk will mark the end of this day. If you are a nightlife fan, Split Nightclub Central and many bars in the Old Town can satisfy your thrill for fun and party!

Spend Thanksgiving on a Yacht

Several charter yachts are advertising availability for Thanksgiving bookings at the end of November.

HMY Yachts says the 98-foot Princess No Curfew is available for the holiday in the Bahamas. It’s a 2012 build that most recently was refitted in 2021. Accommodations are for eight guests in four staterooms—two of them with king-size berths, which makes this yacht an option for couples who want to charter together and split the weekly rate.

According to HMY, charter guests aboard No Curfew can be out and about, having some serious fun while the crew and chef are preparing Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. The yacht charters with a 27-foot Boston Whaler center console tender, a pair of Seadoo Spark three-seaters, a couple of Seabobs for underwater exploration, paddleboards, snorkeling gear and a floating dock to expand the available real estate for watersports.

Churchill Yacht Partners, meanwhile, is advertising no fewer than six yachts that still have Thanksgiving availability from its fleet.

First is the 157-foot Christensen Lady Joy , whose owner is accepting inquires for the Bahamas or the Caribbean. This is a 2007 build that accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, and that charters with 11 crew. The yacht is scheduled to make its way to Nassau, Bahamas, this month, following a summer charter season in the Mediterranean.

Also available for Thanksgiving in the Churchill fleet is the 142-foot Palmer Johnson Lady J . It’s currently in the shipyard in Florida, and is being advertised for the Bahamas on Thanksgiving. For the winter season, this yacht is expected to be in the Caribbean, taking 10 to 12 guests in five staterooms.

Churchill’s team also says the 142-foot Richmond Far From It is available for Thanksgiving. It will be in the Bahamas, following a summer of cruising up in New England. Accommodations aboard Far From It are for 10 guests in five staterooms. The yacht is a 2008 build that most recently was refitted in 2016.

Yet another “Turkey Day” option is the 130-foot Westport Dona Lola , which is available for Thanksgiving in the Caribbean. This yacht accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms, and it charters with seven crew. As of this writing, Dona Lola is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a shipyard period to make sure everything is in top shape ahead of the winter charter season.

Intervention is yet another yacht with Thanksgiving availability. It’s a 100-foot Azimut that will be based in Florida and the Bahamas, with accommodations for eight to 10 guests in four staterooms. This yacht charters with five crew.

Isn’t there one more yacht in the Churchill fleet that’s open for Thanksgiving? Yes. The 95-foot Azimut Sorridente is available for a Thanksgiving charter. This yacht bases year-round in the Bahamas, with accommodations for eight guests in four staterooms. It charters with four crew.
