The rise of the Superyacht Agent

For a long time, a Superyacht agent was considered an unnecessary cost by companies and captains. They were called upon only when there was a problem to be fixed in local marinas or for refuelling or provisioning.

So, what’s changed?

Yacht owners and their guests want more. More exclusive experiences, special events, higher standards. All in a place that a lot of the time Captains and their crew have not visited before. The Superyacht “Milk run” has expanded to lesser known countries and therefore the challenge of finding “special” things for guests has become, well more challenging!

Who and where?

A+ Yachting agency is an agent helping to meet these challenges. Operating in Croatia and Montenegro they are slowly changing the narrative. With their modern approach, professional service, and innovative concierge making them one of the few full-service agencies in Europe.

This year, A+ Yachting went a step further and prepared a program  that will guarantee memories that will last a lifetime.

Starting with Croatia. A+ Yachting has booked a Wimbledon champion,  Goran Ivanisevic, for private tennis lessons or an exhibition match  for all tennis lovers. If guests want something more relaxing, local celebrity singer Petar Graso will gladly serenade them in an authentic Croatian tavern during a delicious dinner.

When it comes to venues for dining experiences. A+ offers a highly exclusive dinner party in Brijoni on the ruins of a Roman villa that  dates to 1 century AD, and several local monuments utilized for dreamlike experiences such as the 15th-century palace, top of the lighthouse, Old Town square, Our Lady of Lorreto monument and many more.

A+ Yachting has prepared equally unique experiences with dining spots on the top of the 14th-century fortress St. Andrew, located 743 meters above sea level, that offers spectacular views of Boka Bay.

You can also opt for a national museum in Perast, where dinner is served on the balcony right next to the famous island landmark of Our Lady of Rocks. A+ Yachting has utilized some of the most famous landmarks in Montenegro in order to provide some unique experiences to its guests.

This has helped them receive an award for the Best Adriatic Superyacht Agent in 2020 and a nomination for the same prize in 2021.

Superyacht Captain Under Investigation Over Death of Billionaire Mike Lynch and Six Others

Italian prosecutors are investigating the captain of a luxury yacht that sank at almost lightning speed off the coast of Sicily “for manslaughter and shipwreck,” according to local reports confirmed by Reuters .

Autopsies are due to be soon carried out on the bodies of those who died in the disaster , including billionaire U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch, who was only weeks earlier acquitted of fraud by a U.S. court over the $12 billion sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Among the other victims were his 18-year-old daughter Hannah , as well as Lynch’s lawyer and one of his team’s key witnesses during those proceedings.

A New Zealand national, 51-year-old James Cutfield had served as captain of the 184-foot superyacht Bayesian, which sank within just 60 seconds on Aug. 19 after being hit by a “tornadic waterspout” during a storm while moored about half a mile from the port of Palermo.

Under maritime law, Cutfield holds final responsibility for the well-being of all passengers and crew aboard the vessel. He has already been interrogated twice by police, and authorities have not yet indicated whether they plan to place any of the other eight surviving members of Cutfield’s crew under investigation.

Though it was ultimately a sudden turn in the weather that saw the Bayesian swallowed by the waves, Ambrogio Cartosio, head of the local public prosecutor’s office, recently said it was “plausible” human error had also played a role in the boat’s sinking.

Local press has further quoted nautical architect Franco Romani, a member of the team who designed the yacht, saying there was a possibility the vessel took on water at great speed due to a side hatch having been left open.

Fifteen of a total of 22 people aboard the boat survived its sinking, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and another woman, named as Charlotte Golunski , who saved her 1-year-old daughter’s life by holding the baby over her head above the waves.

In a bizarre twist to already tragic events , Lynch’s co-defendant during his recent trial, Stephen Chamberlain, also died in a U.K. hospital within just hours of the boat’s sinking, succumbing to injuries sustained in a car collision two days earlier.

Mike Lynch, the investor and high-profile founder of U.K. tech firm Autonomy, has been declared missing at sea after the yacht he was on, the Bayesian, capsized in a storm off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, is one of the 15 who have been rescued. The news is a dramatic, tragic development for one of the more colorful, and sometimes controversial, figures in technology out of the U.K.

DC agents allegedly received kickbacks from title insurers 

The party is over for four companies that settled a civil suit, but maintain they didn’t offer kickbacks, yacht excursions

A group of title insurance companies settled with the District of Columbia after allegedly providing kickbacks to real estate agents to steer clients their way.

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced the investigation and outcome tied to four title companies on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported . The companies paid a total of $3.3 million to settle civil claims, all denying any wrongdoing in the process.

Title insurance is an inescapable part of the homebuying process. When homeowners take out mortgages, they are required by lenders to pay for insurance to protect against unanticipated costs, tacking fees on to the closing for a home. Outside of commissions — another part of the homebuying process under intense scrutiny — title insurance is often the second-highest closing fee for consumers.

Schwalb alleges his office’s investigation found four companies offered real estate agents payments for customer referrals, with one company going as far as to reward participating agents with yacht parties. Schwalb’s office claims the companies offered discounted investment opportunities where agents could receive a share of title and settlement profits for referrals.

The companies named were Allied Title, KVS Title, Modern Settlements and Union Settlements. Modern allegedly offered ownership interests in partnerships without any upfront money from agents.

“These four companies violated the most fundamental principles of a free and fair marketplace: they hid information from consumers, limited their choices, and hurt other businesses that play by the rules,” Schwalb stated. The investigation is set to continue.

The title insurance industry could be in for an upheaval as the Biden administration puts its foot on the scale to revamp the housing market. Fannie Mae is looking to start testing a program where low risk mortgage refinancings wouldn’t require title insurance.

In the spring, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed having lenders pay for title insurance, rather than homebuyers.

Four title insurance companies will pay a combined $3.3 million in fines to settle allegations by the D.C. Attorney General (OAG) of illegal kickbacks to real estate agents in exchange for steering clients to their businesses.

Title insurance is one of the biggest costs home buyers pay at closing. It is required by most lenders to protect against costs from an unexpected property title challenge.

Allied Title & Escrow, KVS Title, Modern Settlements and Union Settlements will pay the District penalties ranging from $65,000 to $1.9 million to settle the allegations. The District will use $1.75 million from the settlements for restitution to affected consumers, which the Office of the Attorney General said it would detail in coming months .

Under terms of the settlement, the four companies agreed to end the practice of giving real estate agents consideration for referral business, and will either cease doing business in the District or divest real estate agents from their ownership interests.

Attorney General Brian Schwalb said investigations found the companies illegally provided real estate agents exclusive investment opportunities in their companies or shell entities. In return for referrals, agents received kickbacks in the form of a split of the profits. The OAG also said Allied compensated agents with yacht parties on the Chesapeake Bay to incentivize future referrals.

The D.C. Office of the Attorney General said those kickbacks reduced home buyers’ ability to shop for the best price on title insurance services and hurt competition in the District’s title insurance and escrow markets.

All four companies agreed to end the practices before the OAG’s investigation was completed. Allied, KVS and Modern issued statements denying improper conduct but settled to avoid protracted litigation, the Wall Street Journal reported . Union did not respond, according to the Wall Street Journal.
