If your child or a child in a family that you know would like to sail this summer, but cannot afford it, then please Contact Us by email or by phone at (603) 589-1177 .  Every inquiry is confidential

We take great pride in the fact that many of our financial aid recipients have been given an experience they never would have had - -  an experience that might open the door to a lifetime of enjoyment of sailing and appreciation of the water.

Chronicle Watchh Us.jpg

The Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association, Inc. is dedicated to helping children from 7 to 16 build character through learning to appreciate, harness and respect the elements of wind and water. We are committed to work with students of all interests, abilities and means.

The LWSA has taught several thousand sailors since 1988. Our  US Sailing -certified instructors know what to teach at each level from novice to racer, and how to make it fun, too!

Our course materials and teaching aids are based on  US Sailing  and   American Red Cross  curricula. Course time is a combination of both classroom and on-the-water training. Our 37-boat Sailing Fleet consists of Optimist sailing dinghies, Vanguard 420's , a 23-foot Sonar keelboat, two 26-foot J-80s, and a fleet of ten exciting  O'pen Bic sailing dinghies !

Youth Classes

We offer a broad curriculum of hands-on youth classes all summer long for kids of all abilities ages 7 to 16, plus a Youth Racing Club (up to age 18) for those who want to race.

For students of all abilities, from beginner to experienced sailors, who can't wait to get  out on the water!

Adult Classes

We offer a hands-on group adult classes for beginner and intermediate adults. These are a great way to try out sailing and master essential skills. Whether you are just interested in trying sailing for the first time, giving the gift of sailing lessons to a family member, or want to get back into sailing after many years away from the helm, LWSA can help you meet your goals. Many of our adult group participants are new boat owners of small sailboats and find this the perfect way to safely gain confidence. Others want to brush up on skills before getting involved in the yacht racing scene on Lake WInnipesaukee.

Private Lessons

Our experienced staff is here for you! What would you like to do?

We will work with you or your family to deliver private lessons at times that are convenient to you, and at your own pace. We provide the boat, large or small, or if you prefer, we will coach you on your own sailboat.

Private Excursions / Outings

If you do not want instruction, but would just like to go sailing on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee, we can arrange that as well. Whether you are arranging a family outing or a team event for your business, LWSA can help you enjoy a sailing excursion on the lake.

Requirements

Swim tests .

Water safety is the first consideration for all. Students must pass the LWSA swim test prior to participating in any course. These tests will be conducted the first day of each class.

For the swim test, students will be required to swim approximately 75 feet wearing a life jacket, to a coach boat with instructor(s). They will then remove the life jacket and tread water for approximately one minute to demonstrate their comfort level in the water. They will then put the life jacket back on and swim back to the starting point.

Life Jackets

Students are required to have their own PFD (Life Jacket). If you are unable to purchase one for your child, please let us know and we will work to find one for him/her.

What To Bring

You can find a full, easy to print list of what to bring to Sailing School here .

LWSA wants participants in its programs to have fun while developing their skills and building their confidence. In order to function well, programs require a high standard of commitment, effort and personal conduct. Proper behavior & sportsmanship are expected while participating in the School’s program and on its property.

All classes start promptly at 9:00 AM or 1:00 PM. In order to maintain our schedule we ask that all students be on campus and “ready to go” on time but no earlier than 10 minutes before the designated start time.  Campus location and  directions can be found here .

Send a Kid to Sailing School

LWSA will not turn anyone away because of inability to pay.

Your donation of $75 will send a child to sailing school for a day,

$370 for a week and $555 for two weeks.

Your donation will go directly to our Scholarship Fund

During the war years, club activities were at a minimum, but rapidly resumed after the wartime fuel restrictions were lifted. The islands were largely unpopulated, and members had moorings around the Lake that were all shared. Public docks were uncrowded and easily available for overnight stays. Nonetheless, in 1949, the members formed a corporation, Endicott Estates, and chipped in $500 each to fund the purchase of a permanent home port for the Club.

Portsmouth/Kittery

Maine , South Coast and Casco Bay

Photo: Charles Tarbell

When visiting the Portsmouth NH/Kittery, Maine area and the powerful Piscataqua River that separates the two states, one is struck by the diversity of the area. New Castle on the NH side is very quaint and historic and features the impressive Wentworth-by-the-Sea Resort and Marina.  Directly across the river is the equally quaint town of Kittery, Maine, which has a quality yacht yard as well as the imposing Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that refits nuclear submarines. Just up river is Portsmouth, NH, which accommodates ocean-going ships, a cosmopolitan downtown and rich historic sites such as Strawbery Banke. The region celebrated the 400th anniversary of the settlement in 1623 last year.

Approach & Cautions

Photo: Whaleback Light, Walter Gaddis, Flickr

Coming from the south, between Gunboat Shoal bell buoy 1 and Kitts Rock 2KR whistle you will start to focus your approach to the harbor. The arch of the Piscataqua River Bridge (I-95), the lift towers of the Sarah Long (Rt. 1-Bypass) and Memorial (Rt. 1) bridges and the cranes of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will be slightly left. Whaleback Lighthouse Fl (2) 10 s and R “2” are left to starboard.  Can “3” and a daymark on Stielman Rocks off New Castle beach are left to port. Inside C “3” is a yellow warning buoy and a University of New Hampshire experimental fish pen just under the watch tower of the USCG Portsmouth Harbor Station. Fort Point Lighthouse G is left to port.

From the north, Boon Island Lighthouse is the prominent offshore light. Inshore from this lighthouse, beware of the various marked rocks such as York Ledge, Murray’s Rock, Stone’s Rock and, closer to Portsmouth Harbor, The East (unmarked) and West Sisters and Kitt’s Rock (2KR) off Whaleback Lighthouse.

There are channel markers on the Kittery Point shore to center approaching ships in the middle of the channel.

Whaleback light

Little Harbor: The harbor to the west of New Castle, northwest of Whaleback Lighthouse is protected by two offset breakwaters, the easterly breakwater being the outermost. Approaching, observe the can (1) and the nun (2) outside the breakwaters. There is a slight jog to the right and then left through the two breakwaters and then a narrow channel through the mooring field to the Safe Harbor Wentworth Marina . A sailboat should not go inland as the bridge (Rt. 1 Bypass) requires a four-hour window after a call to the State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation for a lift crew to arrive. There is not much inside that bridge of interest to a sailing vessel.

Docking, Anchorages, or Moorings

The most popular anchorage is just west of the mooring field at Pepperrell Cove, between Nun “4” and the western shore.

Moorings: As in most busy harbors, moorings may be in limited supply.

Call the Kittery Harbormaster (207) 451-0829, VHF Ch. 9 & 68, for Pepperell Cove mooring availability.

The Division of Ports and Harbors (603) 436-8500, regulates the moorings but doesn’t manage the moorings. One of their Harbormasters might be a place to start, (603) 231-6100 (Little Harbor) or (603) 944-0569 (Portsmouth).

The Yacht Clubs may have a limited number of guest moorings.

Portsmouth Y.C. : (603) 436-9877, Ch. 78. Moorings, reserved on Dockwa , are $50 and include launch service.

Kittery Point Y.C. : Ch. 68  (staffing and launch service is currently limited to race evenings–Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and weekends.)

Safe Harbor Kittery Point may have a few moorings in the Back Channel between Seavey Island (PNSY) and the Kittery shore. [email protected] (207) 439-9582. They can do repairs, rigging, painting, etc.

Piscataqua Marina 4 Island Ave., Kittery, offers transient slips and is about 1/2 mile from meat and produce markets, a restaurant, and a bakery . Dockmaster David can be reached at [email protected] , (207) 439-1661, or Ch. 9 or 13.

In Little Harbor, New Castle, NH, the Safe Harbor Wentworth by the Sea (603) 433-5050, Ch. 71, offers transient slips and there’s a restaurant next door.

There are no public dinghy docks on the New Hampshire side, but Pepperell Cove in Kittery Point, Maine, has a public dock. Portsmouth Y.C. launch is available for $5 per person per ride (or included in the cost of their moorings).

Provisioning

Pepperell Cove, Kittery Point, ME has a small store with some provisions just up from the Town Dock. For more extensive provisions, two Market Baskets , a Hannaford offering delivery, a Whole Foods , and a Trader Joe’s would best be reached by friend, taxi or Uber.  Also best reached by taxi, there are a Home Depot and a Lowes in the area, a West Marine (Rt. 1, NH), a Hamilton Marine (Rt. 1 BP, ME), Kittery Trading Post (Rt. 1, ME), and New England Marine (Rt. 16 N, NH).

The Great Island Eatery at Wentworth Marina is open 11:00 to 8:00, Wednesday through Sunday. The Wentworth Hotel has some fine dining options including the Salt , (603) 373-6566. There is no dinghy tie up. In Pepperrell Cove, Kittery Point, ME, just up from the Town Dock, is a small complex of options including the Bistro 1828, The Ski Club and Frisbee’s Wharf. There are numerous other dining options in the Kittery/Portsmouth area within reach of an easy taxi ride.

Wood Island Lifesaving Station , Kittery Point, ME, is newly restored and well worth a look.

New Castle village is quaint, and there’s a self-guided tour of the island.

Fort Foster , Gerrish Island, ME, just inside Wood Island, has a beach landing at the town park and is dog friendly.

Odiorne Point State Park , Rye, NH just inside the west breakwater in Little Harbor is another beach landing and has nice hiking trails. With all marine landings, be mindful of the tides!

Fort McClary State Historic Site , Pepperrell Rd., (Rt. 103), Kittery Point, ME,  (207) 439-2845, has some limited trails and great views of the harbor.

Other Things To Do

The area is filled with things to do suiting almost any interest, however most would require a taxi ride as dinghy tie-up space is quite limited or nonexistent.

The Kittery Art Association , 2 Walker St., Kittery, and the NH Art Association , 136 State St., Portsmouth, show a variety of artwork.

The New Castle Historical Society , 120 Main St., New Castle, is open Wednesday afternoons and holds monthly presentations. On Sundays, there are concerts at the church gazebo in the village.

The Kittery Historic and Naval Museum , a short taxi ride, is fascinating.

The Discover Portsmouth Center is a great place to start to explore Portsmouth. There are the famous historical houses of the Strawbery Banke Museum , and there are the independent houses: John Paul Jones House ,43 Middle St.; Wentworth–Coolidge Mansion , 375 Little Harbor Rd., a colonial governor’s house; Wentworth-Gardner House , 50 Mechanic St.; Warner House ,150 Daniel St.; and the Moffitt-Ladd House , 154 Market St., and several more.

The Albacore Museum offers a real submarine for tours. The USS Albacore is a research submarine, designed by the U.S. Navy to test experimental features used in modern submarines.

OUR REVIEWS

What CCA Members are saying:

As a young boy, l learned to row then sail on the Piscataqua River. Learning about the tides with their currents and eddies helps understanding how to get around. Some venues remain the same and some have evolved over time, but it is still a mighty river basin with its charms.

Khanty-Mansiysk: Why you simply must visit this northern land of mammoths

smith cove yacht club

“I have been to Yugra many times. I was sworn in as a Siberian in a cedar forest,” producer Andrey Suleikov writes in the preface to a collection of legends called Yugra. It’s My Land . “I tasted lingonberries in the cold and could not tell whether the berries were coated in sugar or ice. I also enjoyed outdoor hot springs while taking a traditional Siberian bath."

Fuel pumping stations

Fuel pumping stations

Sounds more like time travel than a present-day tourist trip, doesn’t it? But that is what Yugra is like: a fusion between prehistoric things like mammoths and modernity, which has brought oil, gas and new buildings. Even the region’s official name (which is quite long: the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area – Yugra) combines the present with the past.

Tying a ribbon is a national tradition

Tying a ribbon is a national tradition

There is a beautiful legend about Yugra’s origins. In one very bright, warm and sunny city, twins of unprecedented beauty were born: a brother named Yug and a sister named Ra. At first, they grew up like ordinary small children, but with age they began to argue and fight, so much so that when they did flames flared up around them. The townspeople were afraid that they would burn everything down, so they exiled Yug and Ra to a remote northern land covered with ice and snow. The brother and sister illuminated this land with their light and made it warm so that people could come here to live. Yug and Ra stopped fighting and began living together in harmony. Since then, this northern land has been called Yugra.

When you look at the map, it may seem that Khanty-Mansiysk is located almost in the middle of Russia. However, the climate here is similar to regions of the Far North. In winter, the temperature here drops to below -40 degrees Celsius.

We asked local residents and people who know this region well to tell us more about it and to share some tips for tourists who come to visit.

Why should a foreigner visit Khanty-Mansiysk?

“If you want to feel the coldness and colors of Russian winter, then you should definitely stop by in our small cozy town,” says a local tattoo artist, Semyon Chepurnoy.

Yevgeny Zinovyev, a journalist and the former editor-in-chief of a local media outlet, says that Khanty-Mansiysk provides the opportunity to experience a real and not touristy part of Russia. “In winter, there are frosts, snowdrifts and wind. In summer, heat, midges and bears. At any time of the year, you can experience the everyday life and customs of the indigenous peoples: the Khanty and Mansi. And of course, in Khanty-Mansiysk you can get to know the backbone of modern Russia – its oil and gas sector."

“We have unique scenery here. Khanty-Mansiysk is located on seven hills and is surrounded by the taiga. There are a lot of fish in the rivers, and a lot of mushrooms, berries and pine nuts in the forests surrounding the city,” says local insurance company employee Sergey Yankovich.

The harsh climate of the region influences how local residents relate to visitors. “Residents of the city are very good-natured and welcoming and are always ready to offer help in any situation, even to a stranger, because in the north, there is an unspoken rule: If you see that a person is in distress, be sure to help them, because tomorrow, it may be you in their place. The harsh climate and surrounding scenery leave no room for error, especially in winter,” Sergey says.

Things to see/do/taste in Khanty-Mansiysk

Mammoths at the Archeopark

Mammoths at the Archeopark

According to Irina Pudova, a local resident and the author of a collection of legends called Yugra: It’s My land , the first thing to do in Khanty-Mansiysk is to see the local mammoths. Seven life-size bronze prehistoric animals "roam" the area near Samarovsky Hill on the grounds of the Archeopark complex. Here you will also find a prehistoric bison, a pack of wolves, a cave bear, two woolly rhinos and prehistoric people themselves.

“Then you could get something to eat,” Irina advises. “The thing to do is to go to any local restaurant of Siberian cuisine and ask for muksun. It is a valuable freshwater fish of the salmon family, which is highly prized by locals and tourists alike.”

Khanty-Mansiysk is a relatively new city and only received this status in 1950. Soo oil was discovered in the region, prompting a dramatic push in its development. Prior to that, there were just Siberian settlements built by Russia in the late 16th century. Irina is impressed that a modern city was built in such harsh conditions.

“Cultural objects, squares, houses - all this is unique. And everything is new, there is nothing very ancient here. Except for mammoths!” she says.

In addition to the Archeopark mentioned above, Yevgeny Zinovyev’s list of favorite places in the city includes the Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas, along with the Museum of Nature and Man and the centuries-old cedars in the Samarovsky Chugas natural park. He recommends checking out the views from the observation deck near the Monument to the Explorers of the Yugra Land and paying a visit to a local bathhouse.

Yevgeny also provided us a checklist of culinary delights that anyone visiting Khanty-Mansiysk should be sure to try:

  • Muksun (in any form but best of all frozen and sliced as Stroganina).
  • Wild berries (cranberry, cowberry, cloudberry).
  • Venison (in any form but best of all stewed and sprinkled with frozen berries and pine nuts).

Sergey Yankovich recommends visiting the open-air ethnographic museum Torum Maa, which means "Sacred Land" in Mansi. “There you can get acquainted with the history of the city and the district, as well as with the life of the indigenous peoples of the Khanty and Mansi, who belong to the Finno-Ugric group,” Sergey says.

In addition, he advises anyone who comes to Khanty-Mansiysk to visit the spot where the Ob and Irtysh rivers meet, pay a visit to Misne Hotel’s restaurant and taste traditional dishes there, as well as dishes prepared by local fishermen and hunters while in the taiga.

According to Semyon Chepurnoy, the Valley of Streams natural park is another must for any visitor. It is one of local residents’ favorite recreation areas, where you can stroll along a dedicated footpath offering stunning views of the city. Semyon also advises trying pancakes at the GoodFood chain of cafes.

What are the best souvenirs?

“We all love something mystical and supernatural. There is a strong culture of shamanism here, so I think it’s cool to take with you some local amulets charged by a shaman—a bear claw or a pendant made of beads and deerskin,” says Irina Pudova.

Sergey Yankovich advises that authentic souvenirs can be found at the Crafts Center on Roznina Street. “There you can also see and even try on the national costumes of the Khanty and Mansi and try to solve traditional puzzles that representatives of the indigenous peoples made for their children.”

According to Yevgeny Zinovyev, the best souvenirs are Khanty and Mansi amulets, clothes, jewelry, as well as traditional local treats such as muksun, wild berries, pine nuts and venison.

For his part, Semyon Chepurnoy recommends bringing away memories and photographs as well as a little bit of Siberian Frost ❄.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer

P ANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?

The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.

”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”

Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”

The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.

Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.

“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.

”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”

More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.

Previous coverage: More details released as Panama City monitors St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire site

Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.

Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.

"People care so deeply," he said.

History of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra

Yugra is the historical homeland of the Ob-Ugric peoples: Khanty, Mansi, Nenets, and Selkup. They were engaged in hunting, fishing, cattle breeding. After the Turkic peoples pushed them from south to north, these peoples had to apply their skills in more severe conditions. It is at this new location Ugrians began to domesticate deer.

In the first half of the second millennium AD, the main features of the material and spiritual culture of Khanty, Mansi and forest Nenets were formed. It is believed that since then they have not undergone major changes. Since the second half of the 13th century, a new factor in the development of the region was its entry into the Golden Horde.

At the end of the 14th century, the collapse of the Golden Horde led to the emergence of a separate Tyumen Khanate. In 1495, the Siberian Khanate appeared. At that time the basic principles of political, administrative and socio-economic organization of this territory were developed. The region was called Ugra or Yugra.

More historical facts…

The region became part of Russia in the end of the 16th century. From the middle of the 18th century, this region became a place of exile for criminals. December 10, 1930, Ostyako-Vogul national okrug was formed with the center in the settlement of Samarovo. Construction of a new center began 5 km away from it. In February 1932, the new center of the region was named Ostyako-Vogulsk.

In 1934, the first steps to find oil and natural gas in the region were taken. October 23, 1940, Ostyko-Vogul national okrug was renamed Khanty-Mansi national okrug and Ostyko-Vogulsk was renamed Khanty-Mansiysk. August 14, 1944, the region became part of Tyumen Oblast. On January 27, 1950, Khanty-Mansiysk became a city.

On September 21, 1953, in Berezovo, the first natural gas in Western Siberia was produced. On June 23, 1960, the first oil in Western Siberia was discovered near Shaim. This was followed by the discovery of many other oil and natural gas fields. Along with the industrial exploitation of oil and gas fields, the timber industry developed rapidly.

By the end of the 20th century, under the influence of demographic and socio-economic developments the Khanty-Mansi region in fact lost its national basis. On July 25, 2003, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug was renamed Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Yugra.

The name of the region is associated with the self-names of the two main groups of northern peoples - Khanty and Mansi. In the Middle Ages, the word “Yugra” was used to refer to peoples and lands beyond the Northern Urals.

Summers are short and warm. From the west this region is protected by the Ural mountains, from the north it is open to cold arctic air.

The highest points of the region are Mount Narodnaya (1,895 m) in the Polar Urals and Mount Pedy (1,010 m) in the Northern Urals. Two major rivers flow in Khanty-Mansi autonomous okrug: the Ob (3,650 km) and its tributary the Irtysh (3,580 km). About 30% of the territory is covered by swamps.
