Larry Ellison’s Yacht Musashi: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

American billionaire Larry Ellison was the co-founder of Oracle Corporation and is believed to have a net worth of nearly $114 billion. Ellison is no stranger to the yachting world and used to co-own a yacht with David Geffen for many years. There was a rumor he sold his stake to Geffen because he thought their 453 foot yacht the Rising Sun was just too big for him. That was back in 2010. Since that time, Ellison has gone on to purchase his own yacht

Design and Features of Larry Ellison’s Yacht

larry ellison yacht musashi

Ellison’s yacht is known as Musashi. It was built in 2011, just after he sold his previous yacht to David Geffen. It was built by the company Feadship with an exterior design by De Voogt naval architects and interior handled by Sinot Yacht Design.

The vessel has a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. The decks are teak. The superyacht features at-anchor stabilizers to increase comfort. The on board water tanks store around 88,000 liters of fresh water.

What’s with Larry Ellison and Miyamoto Musashi?

larry ellison yacht musashi

Other yachts that Ellison has owned included the Ronin and the Katana. All four of these yachts have a noticeable theme in common and that is Japan with a strong leaning towards samurai culture.

While Rising Sun is a reference to Japan itself, often called the Land of the Rising Sun, the other names are more samurai inspired. Ronin is the name of a masterless samurai while a katana is a type of sword that is often associated with the warriors. As for Musashi, that comes from a famous samurai warrior and Japanese swordsman named Miyamoto Musashi. It was said Musashi was a master swordsman and was undefeated in over 60 duels.

This appreciation for Japanese culture also inspired some of the design elements of the yacht seen in the Sinot yacht architecture. That includes things like an overall minimalistic Japanese style, clean lines along the exterior to the materials and art found within which either reflect Japanese style or design esthetics.  One of the most notable pieces is a Hiroshi Senju painting.

Interior of Larry Ellison’s Yacht

larry ellison yacht musashi

The Musashi superyacht has been designed to accommodate up to 18 guests at a time, in addition to the crew who run the ship. That includes 10 guest suites, two of which are VIP cabins. Among the many features available for guests you can find

  • a movie theater
  • a swimming pool
  • basketball court
  • volleyball court
  • beach and water toys

The 5 deck yacht can be accessed easily thanks to an elevator to take you where you need to go. Failing that, there’s a stainless steel and glass staircase that can take you through the structure. The design is a little unusual and where a tender garage would normally be kept on the lower decks is the gym and spa and then crew quarters as well as access to the inner workings of the ship are down below.

The Musashi also features a basketball court on board as well that can be converted for playing other sports like football and volleyball as a crane that can launch racing boats.

There is a tender garage, of course, but it’s located on the main deck as part of the giant beach club. You can also find a cinema on the main deck that converts to a lounge and then most of the guest cabins are on this level as well.

Heading to the upper deck, half of this entire space is reserved for the largest of the VIP suites.

How Much Did Musashi Cost?

larry ellison yacht musashi

According to various reports, Musashi cost Ellison about $160 million. That doesn’t put it in the running to be the most expensive yacht in the world by any means, but it’s definitely an expensive superyacht.

The annual expense for running the yacht which includes everything from taxes and licenses, salary for the crew and fuel expenses is believed to run between $10 million and $20 million per year. That may seem like a lot but it’s pretty standard for a yacht of this size. This is part of the reason why many billionaire yacht owners will put their yacht up for charter during times when they are not using it. It’s much easier to cut those expenses when other people are paying them.

That said, Ellison has not opted to make his yacht available for charter. At least not yet, anyway.

Speed and Propulsion

Musashi is powered by twin 5,766hp MTU 20V4000 M93L diesel engines.

  • The yacht has a fuel capacity of 335,000 L (88,000 US gal).
  • That means that Musashi has a maximum range of 6,000 nmi (11,000 km) at 12 knots (22 km/h).
  • Cruising speed is 18 knots and a top speed of 21 knots.

The crew of the Musashi numbers around 24 and there are 10 crew cabins on board. This includes the crew needed to actually operate the vessel as well as additional crew members such as a chef and others who are able to see to the needs of the passengers for whatever they might require.

Musashi is a large yacht, though far from the largest yacht in the world.   It measures 288 feet in length, and has a beam of 45.6 feet. The draft is 13.5 feet and the gross tonnage of the megayacht is 2,463 tons.

How Does The Musashi Yacht Compare to Other Luxury Yachts?

larry ellison yacht musashi

One of the most obvious comparisons you can make is between this luxury superyacht and Ellison’s previous yacht the Rising Sun , owned by David Geffen. The Rising Sun is 453 feet which is 165 feet longer than Musashi. The Rising Sun was also said to have a cost of around $200 million compared to the $160 million of Musashi.

While $160 million is nothing to sneeze at, the current reigning title for most expensive yacht seems to belong to the Eclipse, owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich which, after the initial purchase and various retrofits and upgrades, is said to have cost him $1.5 billion.

In terms of size, Musashi also falls short of the largest yacht in the world which is the massive Azzam. It measures in at 180 meters which is nearly 600 feet in length.

The Bottom Line

Larry Ellison was the founder of Oracle and is one of the top ten richest people in the world. He spent $160 million on his yacht Musashi, named after a historical samurai. Musashi measures in at 288 feet in length and can handle up to 18 guests on board. The yacht features a pool, spa, gym and other amenities and is very much inspired by Japanese design elements.

Larry ellison’s ownership of the superyacht musashi, the samurai connection of the superyacht, a minimalist, japanese-style vessel.

It is a common knowledge that the world’s wealthiest people like blowing millions of dollars on collectible vehicles, opulent homes, private planes, and other luxuries. Others own a lot of stocks and corporations all over the world and tech billionaire Larry Ellison is among them. Nothing really compares to a multimillion-dollar superyacht when it comes to establishing your super-rich social hierarchy, and it is pretty obvious since the Oracle co-founder has more than one superyacht.

Superyachts can be purchased for hundreds of millions of dollars and maintained for millions more annually. It is regarded as the foremost symbol of prosperity and exemplifies excellent affluence. Many billionaires possess enormous superyachts that are the ideal signs of their opulent lifestyles.

Superyacht Musashi, owned by American billionaire Larry Ellison, is one expensive example and is amazingly featured in one of Netflix's series, The Dropout. Fans were astonished at the sight of the superyacht seen in the series. The peculiar designs and architectural layout are remarkable that this raises queries about it and the identity of the yacht's enormous owner.

Larry Ellison, full name Lawrence Joseph Ellison, was the Oracle's software corporation co-founder and CEO from 1977 to 2014. With a net worth of $93 billion and a co-founder of Oracle Corporation. He is the eighth richest person in the world. He is considered one of the highest-paid CEO in the US. Although it has been announced that Ellison will be leaving the board of directors in 2022, he also owns shares in Tesla valued at the US $1 billion. His Musashi is revered by all as a classic illustration of the most luxurious pastime a millionaire like Ellison enjoys. It is an 88-meter vessel designed in the Japanese style and unveiled in 2011 by the Koninklijke De Vries yard of Feadship in Makkum, the Netherlands.

Musashi measures 87.78 m (288.0 ft) overall and 13.90 m in beam (45.6 ft). Together with her sister ship Fountainhead, she is ranked as the 79th-largest yacht in the world. Her well-chosen name reflects the appreciation for Japanese styling that her very skilled owner shares. Additionally, the billionaire has made no secret of his admiration for Japanese tradition and has acquired a precious collection of Japanese artwork that dates back thousands of years.

Ellison is well-known for having owned numerous high-end superyachts during his life. The 58-meter Ronin, the 75-meter Katana, and the 138-meter Rising Sun are some of them. When you get here, you'll see that the names of all these vessels are strongly associated with the country of the rising Sun. With its name derived from the illustrious samurai Miyamoto Musashi in Japanese history, the Musashi also adheres to this tradition. Musashi, who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries, was a skilled swordsman, philosopher, military leader, author, and Roman.

At the age of 13, Musashi killed a guy in single combat, launching his career as a fighter. He claimed to engage in more or less 60 separate sword fights, all of which he claimed to have won, many of which were to the death. Legend has it that he remained undefeated throughout his life and was renowned as a "sword saint" because he set out on a personal quest to learn excellent sword skills. Ellison's choice of the name reveals his love of samurai mythology and Japanese culture. In reality, the billionaire also owned a Japanese art collection in an exhibition that debuted over a weekend at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.

Feadship delivered the superyacht, which cost an estimated amount of $160 million and was the largest vessel ever constructed by the shipyard at the time.  With a crew of 23, Musashi can accommodate 18 guests. Japanese art and design elements are mixed throughout the room. The aesthetic sensibility of the Eastern nation is reflected in every piece of furniture, material utilized, work of art, and sculpture. The ship has five decks, which is a very unusual layout. The tender boats are again positioned on the main deck and prepared to transform into a mobile beach club once they are released into the sea. Downstairs are technical areas and crew accommodations, a gym, and a garage, although this is often a garage for tender motor boats. Musashi's theater room, which can be transformed into a comfortable living room when necessary, is one of its best features. The passenger compartments are located in the main deck's remaining space.

Meanwhile, a master suite fills half of the upper deck. It contains a theater room that can be converted, and the living room on the main deck has a breathtaking outlook. The glass and stainless-steel elevator system must be mentioned, encircled by a glass staircase that winds across the boat's floors. Musashi has an average speed of 18 knots and can operate continuously at over 6,000 knots.

From the archives: On board the 88m Feadship superyacht Musashi

Fusing Japanese minimalism with hints of art deco and vast expanses of glass, the magnificent Musashi shows what can be achieved when a top studio, a leading shipyard and an enthusiastic owner come together. BOAT International dives into its archives...

Miyamoto Musashi lived around the turn of the 16th century, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest samurai in Japanese history. A supreme swordsman, he received the title kensei – meaning ‘sword saint’ – and was reputedly never beaten in more than 60 duels during his lifetime. However, there was another side to Musashi, and he also became an accomplished sculptor, painter and calligrapher, as well as writing books not only on combat and strategy but also on self-discipline. He was, it appears, well worthy of his legendary status.

Fast forward 400 years to another Musashi , the 87.78 metre yacht launched in 2011 by Feadship ’s Koninklijke De Vries yard in Makkum, the Netherlands. As her name suggests, her highly experienced owner shares a passion for Japanese styling, and the name was well chosen. With her exterior lines and interior design realised by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design in close co-operation with Feadship and De Voogt Naval Architects, the parallels to her namesake are described by Sinot thus: ‘Subtle but unconquerable, with clear lines but many concealed elements, with an open structure, but closed where necessary; [she is] entirely inspired by Musashi’s character.’

With a background as an industrial designer, Sander Sinot is well placed to understand the requirements for a turnkey custom project such as Musashi . 'I prefer to work in a team where you have a naval architect doing the hull shape, the underwater profile and making the whole engineering plan fit into a design philosophy,' he says. 'As with buildings, you have specialists to do the calculations in a given discipline, but the way we look at it is to make sure there is beautiful architecture not only from the outside, but also from the inside. Our industrial design background means we know also how to produce it.'

It's a valuable skill for a project where Sinot and his team became responsible for not just the overall concept, but also the custom design of every single element of the yacht, from the interior style and furniture right down to the smallest details.

‘We had a profile of the client, and also some references – I went to visit his domestic environments, and he has owned yachts before so we looked at those interiors. He has a strong flavour for art deco and for Japanese style, so we aimed for a fusion of the two – a kind of Japanese deco. The result is, on one hand, a touch minimalistic, but on the other we brought in a little Western flavour.’

Musashi’s layout is by turns conventional and alternative. The lower deck is given over to the crew areas and technical spaces, with the only guest amenities being a gymnasium and a spa aft. The main tenders are kept on the main deck aft, an area which, when the tenders are launched, becomes a giant beach and play deck complete with basketball court . Aft on the main deck is an informal lounge-cum-cinema, while the rest of this deck provides sumptuous suites and cabins for guests – two aft VIP suites, which each feature one full wall of windows, and six guest suites forward of the main foyer, which each benefit from proper en suite bathrooms and dressing rooms.

The upper deck comprises another saloon with the inside dining area at its forward end, while the front half of this deck is given to one of the two master suites on the yacht. The second master is located aft on the bridge deck, with the wheelhouse forward gaining superb visibility thanks to those impressive panoramic windows. The open-air top deck offers guests the chance to enjoy the sun, cool off in the yacht’s spa pool, or enjoy a drink at the bar.

The first thing to note is that Musashi eschews the trend for a giant beach club in the stern. ‘What is very different to most yachts,’ explains Sinot, ‘is that we have big tenders on the main deck aft. The lower deck gymnasium – sited where the tender garage might be – has a big hull door that opens to create a platform on the water, while a large glass wall slides open to create a flexible indoor/outdoor gym depending on the weather conditions. We use a lot of the lower deck space for the technical elements,’ he says, ‘and because we have this tremendous main aft deck, a beach club would be a bit overkill. Most of the time, if the yacht is at anchor for more than a couple of hours, the tenders will be launched and the whole of that main aft deck is open.’

The spa area features clean design, and appears very Japanese in its execution, an effect enhanced by overhead shoji grids and backlit, wavy curved glass used to create a sense of harmony and tranquillity to allow users to relax.

Musashi’s other main social spaces are divided into two areas: the aft informal saloon on the main deck, and the large saloon and dining area on the upper deck.

The main deck saloon overlooks the expansive aft deck, and again, design is clean, yet homely. ‘During the day, you can hang out, you can lounge and you can head out to the basketball court,’ says Sinot. ‘It’s all soft, silk carpets on teak deck and the fabrics are chenille and cashmere. It’s all very soft in tactility.’

There is more to the aft saloon than meets the eye, though, for the comfortable daybeds become luxurious stalls for when the area is converted into a cinema , complete with a six metre wide screen that is concealed in the deckhead, and an ultra high-end AV system and HD projector. Moreover here, as in the rest of the yacht, there is great emphasis on clean surfaces, but not at the expense of practicality. ‘Everything here is integrated,’ Sinot continues. ‘We try to hide controls, but they’re not so hidden that you can’t find them. For example, there is a little wooden button in the side console to the daybeds – if you press it, a lid will drop and slide forward, and a telephone will pop up.’

This aft saloon is dominated by the expansive windows and the wall of glass that overlooks the aft deck, a theme that was central to the design of the entire yacht. ‘We tried to push the glass,’ says Sinot, ‘to make the windows as big as possible, so it feels more like a penthouse apartment than a yacht. The theme was also apparent on Rising Sun , which used a structural web with big areas of glass, and it’s something we wanted to translate for _Musash_i.’

The second large communal guest area is the upper saloon, a relaxed area that can comfortably accommodate 18 guests in its luxurious surrounds. Geometric sofas created in macassar with stainless steel trim form a central conversation area, while outlying chairs and deco-influenced occasional tables allow for enjoying the expansive views. Forward, a 4.5 metre dining table finished from book matched macassar ebony veneer – complete with a blond wood splint central feature – is overlooked by a Hiroshi Senju painting of a waterfall illuminated by custom lighting. It is one of many exceptional artworks and sculptures on board.

A key feature is the central glass lift enveloped by a stainless steel and glass staircase that snakes through every deck of the yacht. The steps are made from three layers of glass , with the top layer sandblasted to offer good grip underfoot, while LED spots with concealed wiring illuminate each step on the stainless steel backbone.

It is evident that everything on board has been realised to the very highest standard, from the custom furniture designed by Sinot and crafted by Pollaro to the fit-out by Metrica, from the naval architecture and engineering to the detail in the artwork. Everything is custom, right down to the last tap and handle. ‘I think the success of the project,’ says Sinot, ‘is that we had the opportunity to work very closely with the owner. He is very receptive, and very creative – it’s easy to have a creative dialogue with him. Design has a lot to do with determining what you want to do, with making decisions. He is very quick at making decisions and he also offered space for interpretation.

‘If you have a good owner, a good build captain and a good shipyard,’ Sinot concludes, ‘then the project can be successful.’ There is no doubt that this yacht is the epitome of a successful project – a blending of skills and talents which has created a superb, balanced, and perfectly finished yacht. Musashi himself would have been proud.

Before we check out this samurai-inspired superyacht, who is Larry Ellison  exactly?

Since co-founding American computer technology giant Oracle, which has become the world’s second-largest supplier of business applications, he hovers around being the fifth or sixth richest person in the world.

Forbes’ real-time billionaire tracker recorded his current net worth to be a very easy-breezy $95,7 billion earlier today.

The tycoon is also a massive Tesla fan, having bought three million shares of Tesla worth $1 billion in 2018. He also became a board member but is rumoured to be relinquishing that role later this year.

He is also really into Japanese culture, which he so dotingly showed off with the design of his 87,7-metre superyacht named after a legendary samurai.

Meet Musashi:

larry ellison yacht musashi

Image: Feadship

Luxury Launche s has the story behind the name:

The Musashi superyacht is no different and is named after Miyamoto Musashi – one of the greatest samurais in Japanese history. Born in the 16th century, Musashi was a Japanese swordsman, philosopher, strategist, writer, and rōnin. He became renowned through stories of his unique double-bladed swordsmanship and undefeated record in his 61 duels. He even received the title Kensei, Japanese for ‘sword saint’. Ellison’s passion for the Japanese culture and the Samurai legends was the prime reason the superyacht was named Musashi.

The other yachts that Ellison has owned over the years have also had names with ties to Japan; there was the 58-metre Ronin, the 75-metre Katana, and the gigantic 138-metre Rising Sun.

In 2011, Feadship’s Koninklijke De Vries yard in Makkum, the Netherlands, launched Musashi, estimated to be worth a massive $160 million:

“Subtle but unconquerable, with clear lines but many concealed elements, with an open structure, but closed where necessary; [she is] entirely inspired by Musashi’s character,” Sander Sinot, of Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design, told Boat International.

The minimalistic Japanese aesthetic is reflected in every nook and cranny, from the furniture and the materials that were used, to the numerous artworks and sculptures all over.

This includes a Hiroshi Senju painting of a waterfall that’s illuminated by custom lighting, in the upper saloon.

larry ellison yacht musashi

The spa room also borrows heavily from Japan, featuring traditional shoji panels:

larry ellison yacht musashi

Musashi can accommodate up to 18 guests along with a crew of 23 people, which is revolutionary for its size category.

The five-deck layout is a thing to behold:

The lower deck is taken up by technical spaces and crew areas, with the gym and spa where the tender garage would typically be placed. The tenders are kept in an area on the main deck that turns into a giant beach club when the tenders are deployed.

larry ellison yacht musashi

Another highlight of the Musashi superyacht is the convertible cinema on the main deck that also doubles as a cozy lounge area. The main deck also houses the guest cabins. Half of the entire upper deck is dedicated to one of the master suites. Equally stunning is the central glass lift wrapped around by a stainless steel and glass staircase that snakes through every deck of the yacht.

larry ellison yacht musashi

Despite the traditional samurai-inspired design, modern American elements are also masterfully blended in with the vast beach club coming complete with a basketball court.

Last but not least, the yacht’s performance is just as remarkable as its custom design, boasting a top speed of 21 knots per hour with a 6 000-nautical mile (9 650 kilometres) range.

What a way to establish yourself in the billionaire pecking order.

The Insiders Guide to Sausalito

The Super Yacht off Sausalito is Musashi, Owned by Larry Ellison

July 1, 2013 by Editors

Note:  The vessel is no longer anchored off Sausalito, but (as of Sept. 1) can be seen at anchor from the Embarcadero in San Francisco at the foot of Battery St. behind the America’s Cup Pavilion near Pier 33 .

Who owns the big yacht anchored off the Sausalito waterfront?

Sharp-eyed local artist and photographer Evaristo Buendia caught this late afternoon shot of Larry Ellison’s huge mega-yacht Musashi (named after the most famous of all samurai, Miyamoto Musashi ) in San Franciosco Bay off the coast of Sausalito.   It is the 48th largest private yacht in the world .

Since America’s Cup races start this weekend we presume this is part of Ellison’s preparation to observe the events with guests.  The vessel can host 18 people, who are served by a crew of 23.

Of course, maybe he’s just here to see Sausalito’s 4th of July Fireworks !

Larry Ellison and his latest ex-wife, Melanie Craft

When you're worth nearly $50 billion, like Oracle founder Larry Ellison, you can afford to do things that most people can't.

For instance, you can put basketball courts on your yachts.

Ellison has installed courts on at least two of his yachts, Tom Ehman, who handles America's Cup matters for Ellison told The Wall Street Journal.

But what fun is a court, if you don't use it, right? Ellison likes to relax by shooting hoops on these courts.

And here's the best part: He has someone ride along in a powerboat behind the yacht to retrieve balls that go overboard, according to The Journal.

Ellison has been trying to buy an NBA team for years and is trying again, now. This time he hopes to buy the L.A. Clippers and has put together a bid for the Clippers with Oprah Winfrey and entertainment mogul David Geffen, Geffen confirmed to The WSJ.

Mark Zuckerberg’s new yacht, Launchpad, is enjoying its summer debut. The megayacht recently stopped in Mallorca and has since ventured further into the Mediterranean. It looks like Zuckerberg may dethrone Jeff Bezos as king of this year’s superyacht season.
