Best experience, with friendly staff, helpful in every way. Great place to hang out- family oriented, quaint, eclectic gift shop, with a awesome galley kitchen- Gas products are ethanol free, and plenty of lake accessories!

I want to explain the bad ratings that this company received has NOTHING to do with Pier 88. The people that tried to get into the neighborhood made the mistake. The neighborhood is private and gated. They needed to be on the list with security to get in. Their experience is with River Hills security... not the marina. They are two completely different entities. That being said... Pier 88 is amazing. The owners: Paul and Rikki are so sweet. Their gas is cheaper than any marina on the lake. The general store is adorable and has drinks and snacks including hamburgers etc. The marina is full service and the staff is always very helpful. I highly recommend this business!

I was in River Hills, doing some contractor work and realized that my gas tank was on empty, as it takes 2 miles of gas to get in and out of the community. My work happened to be near the Pier 88 fueling station and was directed there to get gas for my car. As I walked up, I discovered that the store was open and abandoned. I waited 10 to 15 minutes and as I walked back to shore, saw a woman who was carting soda boxes. I explained that I was in a pinch and needed some gas to get out of River Hills. The woman was friendly for about 5 seconds until she decided to add her personal opinions, which included "or don't run out of gas in the first place." Instead of just giving me a few gallons, she decided to give me 5 gallons and charged me $26+ for Marathon fuel. When you get a chance to be kind in a place of business, show understanding and don't take advantage of people in a bind. Also, when you abandon your workplace, you provide an easy opportunity for theft.

Go here to get gas for my boat. Workers are very nice and very helpful. They sell many items in the tiny store like hotdogs and ice cream. Both are very good. They also sell hats and other clothings. Many gas pumps which is helpful. If you're lucky then you can even see turtles and cat fish in the water. It has seating outside to sit outside and enjoy the day. Recommend.

Low cost and great views!! You could either pull up in a boat or walk from your car. Its a nice quant place, however depending on traffic it could be a little loud with boats coming in and out. Service was amazing and employees are very friendly! You will need to make a reservation before going but its worth in

We really like this place. The food is really very good. The owners are usually there and are always very friendly and seemed to truly care about our experience. They have a really nice floating patio area with tables on the water. Can't beat that!

Great place to eat and enjoy a day on the water. Ample docking and nice picnic tables overlooking the marina. The French fries and onion rings are best on the lake. Nice ships store and gas is available. Very nice and helpful!

Our goal at Pier 88 Yacht Club is to make sure that you have a memorable, safe and fun-filled day on beautiful Lake Wylie! Pier 88 Yacht Club was established in the fall of 2007 at River Hills Marina, which was established in the early 70s. Locally owned and operated by Rikki and Paul Herrmann and Chip and Heather Krell. The Krells have been river rats since 1984 and the Herrmanns since 2010. You'll find just about everything you need at Pier 88! We're stocked with everything from fishing supplies to boating supplies, not to mention plenty of good food and drink. In our ship's store and Cookie's Boutique, we've got you covered. You'll find sunglasses, men's T-shirts, ladies tank tops and designer shirts, hats, caps and much more. At Cookie's, you can grab a hot dog, burger, wings, and much more from our extensive menu and the coldest beer on the lake. Call ahead and we'll have it ready when you arrive. We are pet friendly!

Kayaking can range from a relaxing trip on a calm lake or river to an adrenaline pumping extreme sport. Unless you’re seeking an adventure, it is advisable for most beginners to start slow on calm waters and avoid white water kayaking on day one.

Beginners thinking about hitting the water the first time only need to know a few simple things to enjoy a gorgeous day outdoors. Kayaks come in several styles, shapes, and sizes. They can be sit on, sit in, long, short, wide, or narrow. Sit in are more commonly heard of, but require more skill in the advent of flipping the boat. Sit on kayaks are generally advised to first time kayakers and are usually wider, more stable and allow for a easy way to get on. The length and width of the boat determine stability and maneuverability. The wider and lower the boat, the harder it is for it to tip over or throw you out. While a shorter boat is easier to turn and maneuver. However as the time comes, longer and narrower boats do allow for faster speeds with less physical effort. So in general a short, wide, sit on kayak is a good starting place for most beginners.

After a suitable boat is found, all that are needed are paddles and life jackets. Life jackets come in many shapes and sizes, so find one that fits properly. A life jacket that is too tight causes discomfort for the duration of the ride and one that is too big may come off when in the water. Make sure and test the life jacket’s size before starting on the kayak. Many times a life jacket seems good enough only to float half above the person when they swim around. A life jacket that fits should have a couple inches of clearance when pulled away from the chest and be able to move around the smallest amount. Depending on how many people are going to be in the kayak, single or double sided paddles should be considered. In a one person kayak it is often advised that both sides of the pole have a paddle to limit time spent switching grips in order to go on a straight path. When two or more people are on a multi person kayak, a one sided paddle may be better to avoid hitting each other’s paddles when rowing.

The next part is the fun part. Get on the water. It may take a few minutes to get the rowing down, especially if two or more people are trying to equal each other’s strokes, but sit back relax as the water rushes by you. Never worry about falling out either. With a suitable life jacket and calm water, getting in the lake or river is a rather enjoyable way to cool down when working up a good sweat on the kayak. Also, most beginner kayaks wide and designed to allow easy access when getting back on from in the water.

As you become more experienced and look for more options, consider a slightly faster river or a longer and thinner kayak. Your strokes will push you further with less effort and you’ll soon be addicted to the most relaxing workout around.
