Build Your Transporter

Select from our most popular configurations to build the perfect boat transporter for your yard.

  • Wireless Remote and Backup Controls

All transporters come equipped with a wireless remote control to operate all the hydraulic functions on the machine. It gives the operator the flexibility to maneuver the transporter into tight places while observing the move from all angles. Backup controls are supplied at the engine or on an optional riders cab if the vessel needs to travel a longer distance.

  • Variable Width

For applications that require lifting of various size cradles, or wide beam mono hulls and catamarans, the variable width option is ideal. The option is available in single variable or double variable width depending on how wide the variation of vessels are at your yard.

  • All-Wheel Steering

Most models come standard with all-wheel steering which includes independent front and rear wheel controls. The operator can steer both sets of wheels to one side to obtain crab steering to 35º or more, allowing you to store boats as tight as possible and maximize the space at your facility.

  • Aluminum and Steel Keel Beams

Certain boats need to have at least some of their weight on the keel when lifted so keel beams are offered as an option. The most popular form is aluminum with frame sleeves, which is designed for fastest speed and least amount of labor. The beam resides in the frame of the machine and can be easily be pushed into place by hand. Independent keel beams on wheels are also available in both aluminum and steel. These can easily be wheeled into place and pinned on pick up legs.

  • Increased Speed and Gradeability

This option includes a larger pump and engine to produce added speed in boat yards that have a greater distance between the loading and storage areas. This option is also used to produce additional power for yards that have above average slopes or softer surface material.

  • Hydraulic Fixed Pads

With this option the boat pads are fixed on the machine frame and raised into place by a hydraulic cylinder, allowing the operator to position the pads with the remote instead of manually raising them into place. A second pump helps increased the lifting and lowering speeds of the pads and they run at low pressure so there is no risk of damaging a vessels hull.

  • Mechanical Fixed and Movable Pads

Flexible and versatile, the mechanical pads can be fixed or moveable to slide along the side beam to position the pads where they need to be. The angle of the pads are easily adjustable and can also be flipped to the outside of the frame for handling wider boats. The length is spring loaded to help lift into place and extensions can also be added for handling deep keel sailboats.

  • Telescoping Hydraulic Pads

The option mounts self-leveling pads on hydraulic telescoping arms which can rotate 180º allowing the pads to meet many different hull types. The angle and telescoping length are adjusted hydraulically and the self-leveling pad positions itself on the hull no matter the angle. This is especially important when the arms are up high, and the operator can't reach them.

  • Increased Lift Height

All transporters come standard with internal lift cylinders that raise the entire machine but when navigating more uneven terrain, ascending ramps or handling deeper keel vessels, it may be necessary to have increased lift height. This is accomplished by replacing the standard lift cylinder with one that has additional stroke.

  • Load, Engine and Pressure Indicators

A few different options are available depending on the information you want to obtain from the machine. Load pressure gauges show pressure, but not actual weight, to help balance the load and determine if there is any overloading. Another more advanced option adds IQAN modules for electronic load indication, as well as pressures, engine info and gives remote diagnostic capabilities.

  • Custom Width and Length

Meet the unique needs of your yard. Our team will design and build your machine for the boats you need to transport. Customizable lengths and widths are available to make sure the machine can meet the different needs of each individual yard.

  • Roll, Tilt & Auto Equalizing

There are three lifting functions as standard on each transporter, both rear corners and the front. The front lift cylinders are equalized and follow the rear allowing the operator to change the angle of the boat laterally or longitudinally. While traveling the wheels will follow the terrain lifting and lowering as needed, ensuring the load stays equal on the machine and level with the general angle of the terrain.

  • Easy Cradle Handling

The CS Series (Easy Cradle Handling) transporter was developed for moving cradled boats quickly and with minimal labor. It can lower itself to 12 inches to roll under the open center cradle and then lift cradle and boat in seconds for simple and fast transport. The CS Series is offered from 20 ton to 40 ton capacity and is suitable to handle open center cradles or raised shoulder cradles.

  • Wheel Set Configurations

Additional wheel sets can be added to the machine to help with vessels that may have more extreme center of gravity offsets. This option allows more weight to be loaded toward one end of the machine instead of needing to be centered with vessels that push max capacity of the unit.

  • Customized Options

If you need an option that wasn't mentioned, just ask your Marine Travelift sales representative. We take pride in customizing machines to a customer’s exact requirements. Adjustable lengths, wide wheels, operator riders cab, engine type, custom paint color, siloxane topcoat with zinc primer and much more are available upon request.

Some thoughts 1. Do you really need Indespension units for a yard trailer? It seems an expensive option to me. 2. I'm trying to remember how the Indespension axles fit onto my trailer but, if the load is carried on the blue beams it will need some good welding 3. Would it be worth looking at Acrow props for the pads? I'm not sure what size your boat is but my trailer, which is road going, has an all up weight including suspension and wheels of 600kg (boat 25 ft, 2+ tonnes). I like the idea of the removable bars. I want to drop my keel and am trying to work out a way to prop the boat up, drop the keel and then wheel the trailer out from under the boat. I'm sure it can be done, but I do feel a bit nervous about doing it!

You don't mention what weight of yacht? Anyway, I was wondering about the suspension units. The problem with having the removable bars is that when you put the weight on, you're loading the longitudinal channels in torsion (and they're lousy in torsion)! Even if a bit of twist doesn't bother the yacht or the cradle, I can see it pinching the round bars such that they wouldn't come out. Also, I wonder what effect it would have on the yacht itself? The structure looks quite weak in torsion down its length because the longitudinals are so close together. If you're towing it over uneven ground, I don't know what it would do to the yacht hull as it twisted. I think I'd be tempted to move the longitudinals to the outer corners (even if it means ditching your bar idea) - OR having additional longitudinals down the sides, but obviously, weight is a consideration. That said, so what if a yard trailer weighs a couple of tons? It's not like it's going on a public road behind something with a limited towing capacity! I think I'd also be inclined to put the wheels as close to the props as possible - even it it meant having to make the front pair castor. Lastly, if there's any possibility whatsoever, of the boat "rolling" forwards or backwards on those bars, you'll need to brace the hull supports fore-aft as well as laterally.

VicS

If you are going to be able to manoeuvre it around corners the two "axles" need to be practically as close together the wheels will allow. Also important to get their position right relative to the centre of gravity. I'd also want the axle cross beams to be continuous lengths not just short bits welded on the sides. You don't need suspension for a yard trolley only for road use. BUT I'd definitely move the axles towards the ends but then if you want to do anything other than go in a straight line you will need to make one axle steerable. I think you will need some means of locating the boat correctly length ways but remember if its a bow post/support you need to locate it to allow for the gradient of the slipway I'd advise you to discuss your plans with the boat yard that will be expected to use it. I think you'd be told what to do with it if you came into the yard where I'm based with it!

3 tips: Keep the axles under the centre of gravity (keel) for ease of turning and to lessen the beam sizes, not at the trailer ends Use short acrow tubes inset into tube inserts at the upper support ends so the pads will rotate and orient to hull curvature. Pins in the acrow holes for height adjustment. Use tractor type bottlescrews for easy lateral support angle adjustment.

I am about to start on a yard trailer. 3.5ton boat. Two off rear axles off Renault Master, fairly close coupled with one steerable, no suspension (why?). Side props, 'acro' types braced sideways and fore & aft. The boat is a motor sailer with .85mt draft, long keel. When I get a bit further I will put up a pic.

Active member

I would use rectangular tubing.I would also want to know where the C of gravity of the yacht was to place the axles. The axle bearers I would place under the longitudinal pieces.Unless you can get a second hand commercial axle I would use indispension units as they are reasonable in price,to what you get.I would also place the longitudinal pieces further apart.I had a 2.5 ton cruiser many years ago and bought a 4 wheeled trailer for it.(It had been used on a "Coronet") It never looked" right to me",so I fitted another axle on it.It travelled OK on the road, the tyres coped OK with the wind up.To get the trailer in the drive we had to manoeuvre it by hand so I would take one set of wheels off.I am sure my neighbours used to dread me bringing it home, as they helped manoeuvre it.I had the trailer 10yrs and had no trouble with the indispension units,in fact the 4 originals were probably older.I used to tow it about 22miles twice a year behind a Transit van with a piano in the back! but thats another story.

Thanks for the input guys, I weigh in at 4 tonnes. Although I am calling it a yard trailer, it is for wintering at home, the marina is an 40 mile each way hike which dampens the desire to do maintenance. I have crane access problems at home (trees) so need to get the boat to the end of the 200metre drive for the bi-annual trip. I will explore your suggestions, steering, maybe all 4 wheels.? My initial thoughts were probably not "out of the box" enough thx Howard

Rigger Mortice, Your idea doesn't sound unreasonable, the hull should not weigh that much when not supporting the keel. I presume she will be stabiled laterally, fore & aft, ie the bar will have pads or something to stop her toppling ? I have home made full depth trestles ( she draws 4'6" keel down ) and when it comes time for antifouling apply one layer, then use a packed up bottlejack. Between hull and jack I place a 1' long wooden block, veed on it's upper surface and steel plated beneath. I can then jack the boat up one end at a time enough to get her slightly off the trestle, so as to move the trestle just enough to clear the unpainted area. The keel is resting it's weight on the ground. Obviously any trestle etc must be under bulkheads, these are suprisingly easy to locate by tapping a knuckle on the hull - assuming she's grp ! The beauty of this is that should the jack fail or something unpleasant, the trestle is still under the boat an inch or so below. If I can help with any further description or photo's please PM me.

Seajet, Thanks for that. I think I'll just have to get on with it, but I won't be making my own trestles. My welding isn't good enough!

Ok, it's a different game now that it's use includes road and a GWT of >5tonnes. I suggest that you are better off buying a used small step frame trailer, which has all the lights, test certs, hydraulics / air etc., and then modifying it to provide supports. They do come up on ebay from time to time. e.g. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=...trailer&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 and there may be one for sale privately already set up for a boat. R31/32/34 Trailer - Single axle articulated truck trailer with cradle for Rival 31-34. Plated for 10 tonnes. Loads of work done to electrics and brakes - have the receipts to show. Very good condition with very little rust. This trailer would require testing prior to using it on the public highway. Now £1000 or near offer. Ideal if you want to put your Rival in your drive. Agree with the above, build a 5th wheel trailer, or buy one and have a local owner driver haul it each way. I'm in the process myself, of building a 8250Kg 5th wheel rig for moving boats up to 30' long and 4500Kg. Even then, I may have to go to 12000Kg There are a few single axle artic trailers around that can be modded. The cost of steel alone is going to make it expensive from new. Certainly if your unit attracts police or vosa attention you'll be pulling it with a push bike for six months. A 50mm ball is normally 3500Kg MAM. With a 4500Kg boat, and 1500Kg of trailer, your hanging 6000Kg on it. A big pickup truck with a fifth wheel in the back is still not going to handle it. Forget indespension units, the wheels and stubs will rip out at that weight. Solid axle, on steel springs and a nato ring coupling, tow it with a Fastrac Get a ford cargo chassis from the truck breakers and start there, rails and rear axle already fitted. Put a drop well in for the keel.

aquaplane

I'm looking at moving my Centaur (4Te best guess) about 40 miles to the sea and it's going to cost about £800. It's £200 or there abouts for the lift at each end. Leave the boat on the coast and drive to it.

Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard

What Others Are Saying

The day before Labor Day, at the beginning of a three-week cruise, our diesel auxiliary began overheating. I would have changed the impeller, but the engine is reversed to make more room in the cabin. I simply could not reach it. On Labor Day all boatyards were closed, but Gig Harbor Marine answered my call and scheduled an appointment for the next day. On that day, two technicians came to the boat, changed the impeller (two men - two hours) and noticed that the raw water hose to the pump was about to break. They replaced that, as well. They briefed me on all they did, advised me about things to watch out for in the future, were cordial, left no greasy smudges, and let me know that if there was any further problem, the fix would be free. Excellent service, very friendly office staff, and the engine has worked fine ever since. Highly recommended.

~John Van Eenwyk

We needed some parts after our port transmission stopped working, and pulled into gig harbor with our fingers crossed that someone would be able to help us out. When walking up to Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, Patrick and Michael both teamed up with us to find the part and guided us through the instillation process. We got everything put back together and we're under-way in the same day!! Very highly recommended for their customer service and knowledgeable staff - we will definitely be back in the future!!

~Krystina D.

We couldn't imagine a better place to be in the Puget Sound!!  The staff and crew of Gig Harbor Marina are always fantastic to work with and treat us like family.  Our 1976 36' Grand Banks Classic has a great life and home there.

~Jorge Sanmartin

Thank you to the whole team. You all provided great customer service and high quality work on our Carver. You honored your timeline, completed each project and returned the boat clean, reassembled and better than ever! The help, patience and care you offered us is much appreciated. We will be customers for life! Thanks again!!

~Napoleon and Christa E.

We have been very satisfied with the GHBY. Patrick is an excellent manager and keeps you very well informed of what you are facing and how it will be resolved. The prices are reasonable and all the staff are very professional and knowledgeable. A plus is that you can stay on your boat while work is being done (unless it is hauled, of course) and enjoy the beauty and activities of the harbor. The office staff is very friendly and professional. We are from Olympia and feel it is worth it to cruise up to GHBY for work on our boat. We trust GHBY.

~Richard Mahoney

We needed prop work done. We called and we had an appt within a few days. Props were sent off for repair and back on within 4 days of arriving. Thank-you Mark and David for working overtime to get us back in the water to enjoy the July 4 weekend. They saved our summer. The staff from office to yard workers, including management were nice, friendly and professional. We consider them friends. Its nice to have boatyard we can depend on.

Would it not be cheaper for each boat to have a cradle and just one set of wheels. Move it then move wheels to next cradle. You should probably have something on the center line for the weight / keel to sit on.

  • Jun 13, 2021

The club itself owns three trolleys which are hired out , all the rest are privately owned by the boat owners. Bilge keeled boats use trolleys with longitudinals towards outer edges with sleepers for the boat to sit on. Fin keeled boats usually have the longitudinals closer together for the single keel to sit on. Its an old system but works. Buying a full scale travel hoist is beyond the clubs finances.

lots of the ones Ive worked on use lorry front axles and tend to be made out of what ever was available at the time , I hate working on boat trailers , full of rust , wheels that wont come off and bearings that are trying to fall off . and no one ever wants to spend 2p fixing them , always a , sure just a quick fix for this year and Ill sort it out next year...

^^^^^^ This is why we are looking at having new ones made. 35 years ago my late father in law had a 32ft yacht she drew 5ft 6" of water. His trolley was a typical old rusty thing, but one day on hauling out at end of season the sleeper & rsj under it collapsed as she came over the top of the slipway, boat rocked forward onto her nose bent the aft support sideways & fell over. John was hurled off the highest rear bit of the boat & landed on his head on the concrete. A severely fractured skull & coma for a fortnight was the result. It took him years to recover. We have had several other close calls & a safety shake up is in order. As Tom sez "no one wants to spend 2p fixing them" John learnt the hard way & his new trolley was rather overbuilt & galvanised for good measure. My own boat uses this one today! With an average small yacht of 26ft weighing 3 - 4 tons & a 35 footer going 5 - 6 tons they have to be strong. There are a few lorry axle types left but they are rapidly being consigned to the scrap bin through old age. The airport style cargo trolleys are an interesting idea for small boats worth chasing up but probably require too much modification.

Certainly the frame should be galvanised!

from what ive noticed via your pics is the trolleys are poorly maintained id expect them to be greased up well not see them rusting like they are new frames with alternative hydraulic system in place for the wheels galvanised of coase and easy access to renew those swivel pins for the tyre swivels

with what you have now cut up and make new boat stands with them as i noticed you have alot of them around so must use them as stands themselves which makes them alot of cost to make loads instead of just plain stands for working on them

Does LOLR not come into effect if anyone builds these and then sells them on ?

They are not lifting equipment so lifting regs shouldnt come into it. We do have a club winch on the slipway & the wire gets inspected & replaced regularly also a crane that gets inspected & maintained, It is severely restricted as to what its allowed to lift, (basically engines & masts only) Because we are a members club with volunteer labor It is not quite the same as if we had paid employees moving boats, Each boat owner is responsible for his own boats equipment (including trolley). Regular volunteer crews with much experience do the actual hauling out & moving but the owner has to be there. Its a system that has evolved over time & works pretty well. Greater minds than mine look at the regs every year & the clubs insurance is pretty tight.

Where my father kept his yacht there was the usual array of old lorry chasis etc, and the odd one similar to yours pictured. But the many had their own cradles as supplied by the builder or built by owners etc. When the boats were lifted out wheels were moved from one cradle to the next. No steering just two axles with steel wheels about 10 inches diameter. Towed by a tractor about a 1/2 a mile from the lift to the boat yard. Boats in varying sizes to about 40ft. They now have a refurbished travel hoist. In a perfect world theyd be bespoke fancy galvanized hydraulic with all the widgets but in reality most yacht owners play with yachts on fairly tight budgets.

Tight budgets while on Shell or Ford pensions lol, yeah right. We are extremely lucky in our club that it is possible to be a member & keep a boat there including subs, mooring, haul out for about £500 to £600 a year all in. Its possible because a few far sighted men caused the club to buy its own land back in 67 & since then the members have built everything.

Whichever way you go with this I would suggest getting all the steels and profiles cut/delivered with the view to getting someone in to weld them up. It’s a big ungainly cradle that would probably cost more to deliver than weld up. Bob

general query here you just pay for lift out and fit onto your boat trolley those trolleys dont go near the water only for land transport they are then used for maintenance of your boats and then stood for the rest of the time until you need them or do others use the trolleys after you also how do you transport the boat around the yard by mand handerling or using a forklift or vehicle as you dont explain enough on those things

gaz1 said: sort of a 2 finger comment here with you speaking about certain set of regs you speak of regs for lifting equipment yet you seem to be ignoring the welding regs as well as supporting the boat regs as well as what was built at one time has to be now checked before a new build can be made Click to expand...
Keith 66 said: If you can tell me what regs we should be obeying as a members club i will look it up, none of the trolleys are road going indeed will never go off the private site, so i doubt trailer regs are applicable. Boat regs likewise, I was in the boat trade for a long time & the Recreational craft directive doesnt concern itself with trailers & such (thank god). The British post brexit version of that hasnt been published yet. Im all for H&S but in this modern world it is no wonder we are being left behind drowning under a sea of paperwork, nobody will ever be able to make anything soon. Click to expand...
