ATHOS WINS PRESTIGIOUS “BEST REFITTED YACHT” AWARD

ATHOS WINS PRESTIGIOUS “BEST REFITTED YACHT” AWARD

The 62m / 203ft classic schooner was converted  – outside and inside – and optimized at her birthplace in Amsterdam. Warm congratulations to the owner of Athos, his team and all involved.

Athos after Huisfit by Oliver Riley 108r 60c resize

Before acquiring Athos (Holland Jachtbouw, 2010), the new owner chartered her for a year. He fell in love with the boat but saw many ways in which she could be optimized to enhance the  amenities and user experience. As the project evolved in his mind, so the refit list grew. And as the refit work got under way, so additional opportunities to perfect the outcome presented themselves.

What started as a large refit project soon came to embrace all aspects of the proposition of Huisfit: refit, rebuild and renewal. The stern overhang would be extended and, on deck, cockpit layouts had to be redesigned and a new forward navigation deckhouse had to be added. New booms, new sails and carbon rigging would ensure improved sail management and performance. All systems were to be updated. A considerable amount of the interior was to be replaced or reconfigured and updated.

Huisfit’s capability and reputation for quality, led to obtaining the project. For the owner, it was a bonus to take Athos back to the location where she was originally built, now Huisfit’s Amsterdam deep water refit facility.

Jeremy “Bear” Wynne, representing the owner during the conversion project: ”The multiple modifications to Athos have been beautifully done. The attention to detail and finish is excellent. The new additions and modifications have not only improved the functionality of the yacht, they have also enhanced the appearance.”

From the World Superyacht Awards judges' report: "The quality and practicality of the work so impressed the judges that they had little hesitation in selecting her as the winner."

Schooner Athos re-delivered by Huisfit following a Successful Conversion

athos huisfit

Before acquiring the 62 m / 203 ft Hoek-designed, Holland Jachtbouw-built Athos (2010), the new owner chartered her for a year. He fell in love with the boat but saw many ways in which she could be optimized to enhance the amenities and user experience. As the project evolved in his mind, so the refit list grew. And as the refit work got underway, so additional opportunities to perfect the outcome presented themselves.

What started as a large refit project soon came to embrace all aspects of the Huisfit proposition: Refit, Rebuild, and Renewal.

Hoek Design was again involved in all naval architecture work to accommodate these changes, the interior styling and layout of the new owner’s cabin, one of the guest cabins, the main salon, the new crew service area and the navigation deckhouse. Peter Mikic Interiors was responsible for the layout and styling of the main deckhouse and for the overall guest interior decoration.

Huisfit’s capability and reputation for quality led to obtaining the project. For the owner, it was a bonus to take Athos back to the location where she was originally built in 2010, now Huisfit’s Amsterdam deep water refit facility.

On deck: from stern forwards

Athos’ stern has been extended by 1.25 meters / 4 feet, a seemingly modest extension. Yet the concave and convex curves of the new section called for exceptional skills in the design and build of the aluminum structure in order to fit perfectly into the aluminum hull. The extension, with a relocated pushpit, provides a new two-meter area for sunbeds behind the owners’ private cockpit.

Baltic 130 My Song

The cockpit itself has been reconfigured for easier access and got extra amenities, including a fridge and ice maker. The interior layout and furnishing of the owners’ deckhouse have been updated. As a finishing touch, the new stern section has been complemented by a fine teak transom.

athos huisfit

The main cockpit and deckhouse, aft of the mainmast, have been extensively modified to provide a true social hub for meeting and greeting, al fresco dining and relaxed leisure activity.

The new cockpit of Athos is wider and longer and can comfortably provide dining for 12 people. There is also informal seating for guests to meet in smaller groups or find a quiet corner to enjoy a read. Coffee tables are flexibly designed in order to adjust to becoming coffee tables or dining tables. A bar with a fridge and icemaker has been installed. Just aft of the main cockpit, re-designed dashboard consoles sit to port and starboard of the ship’s wheel.

The main deckhouse floor has been raised to one level and provides an enhanced outlook. The entire interior, including the nav station, was taken out and a new design installed. The deckhouse looks much larger, the traffic flow is better and the natural light has improved. A new classic-looking bar has been built on the portside and a couch occupies the space of the nav station, while smaller dining tables and casual seating maximize flexibility.

More forward the former crew companionway which gave access to the crew quarters has been replaced by a larger, third deckhouse, styled and crafted in the same style as the other deckhouses.

athos huisfit

This houses a new navigation and secondary steering station and provides additional social space for the crew and access below. At the same time, the new design of the crew deckhouse improved the flow of the engine room ventilation system and reduced the subsequent noise considerably.

Below decks

The owner’s suite has been totally stripped out, re-designed and refitted. An additional porthole was made on either side and therewith wasted space was eliminated to make full use of idle space. There are now two bathrooms in place of one and a new walk-in closet. Hard paneling has been replaced by subtle fabrics and the plank flooring has been carpeted to create a warm and tranquil ambiance.

Just forward of the owner’s suite, a day head has been removed. The space thus obtained has been incorporated into the aft port guest cabin, where a fixed Queen bed and a sofa have been added. Along with the other three guest cabins, the floor has been carpeted and the fielded panels have been upholstered. Everything inside the corridor that connects the guest cabins has been renewed – new walls, new flooring, new carpets, even a new chandelier! The biggest change in this area was the replacement of the original curved staircase to the main deckhouse with a beautifully crafted and space-liberating new stairway.

athos huisfit

From the main deckhouse of Athos, stairs forward previously gave access to a lower salon in an open-plan setting with a showpiece galley. A fireplace was removed and a wall was built between the two areas to create a cozy and intimate media room to starboard. A long bookcase-built cross-ships and luxurious new furniture complete the scene.

The galley to port, behind the new wall, has been custom-rebuilt and all equipment updated for modern haute cuisine practices. A stewardess station has been added meaning that there is more room in the galley for the chef.

In the crew quarters, the laundry has all-new appliances, the crew cabins have new floors and the crew mess enjoys the benefit of new worktops.

Designed by Hoek and built by  Holland Jachtbouw in 2010, S/Y ATHOS has undergone an extensive series of changes – some obvious, some almost unnoticeable – to improve the quality of life on board greatly. Hoek returned as a naval architect for this project, creating the changes to the majority of the interior layout. Peter Mikic Interiors provided the new interior styling as well as the layout for the new deckhouse.

For the external changes, the stern overhang has been extended by 1.25m/4ft to accommodate new sunbeds. The Owner’s cockpit leading down to the Owner’s suite has been reconfigured to include a fridge and ice maker, with improved access going down below deck.

The main cockpit is now capable of seating up to 12 guests for alfresco meals, while the surrounding sides have been fitted with a seating and adjustable tables that can be used for casual coffee mornings or more formal, larger meals.

A new forward navigation deckhouse was added, along with new booms, sails and carbon rigging for better performance and sail management. The main deckhouse has been raised up by one level for improved views for both the Captain and guests. A new design layout has increased the natural light able to penetrate within, improved traffic flow and created the sense of a much larger environment.

Forward, what was once the crew companionway has been removed and replaced by a third deckhouse, which has given the crew an additional social area while at the same time improving ventilation to the engine room, thereby significantly reducing the generated noise.

The crew quarters below have new floors, a crew mess with new countertops, plus a laundry with new appliances. The Owner’s suite aft has been completely stripped out and redesigned, giving an additional porthole on both sides and a sofa/daybed underneath. Other changes include two bathrooms (one of which has a bathtub and the other a shower) and a walk-in closet.

Forward of the Owner’s suite, a lower deck day head has been removed and the recovered space has been incorporated into the port guest cabin, allowing for a fixed queen bed and a sofa. The other guest cabins have been reupholstered, as well as the corridor, which has a new chandelier to complement the new walls and flooring.

Lastly, the galley and salon beneath the main deckhouse have undergone a layout improvement: While the starboard social area has been refurbished, the port galley now has the latest equipment and a stewardess station, enhancing the working area for the chef. The fireplace in the salon was removed and a wall has been added between the two spaces, creating a more intimate ambience for films and conversation.

S/Y ATHOS is now ready for the festive season, where her modifications are sure to please her Owner for an improved living experience aboard a cherished yacht.

Former known as: Athos of London

At 62 metres in length, Athos (formerly Athos of London ) is world’s largest and most luxurious privately-owned two-masted schooner. One top of that, she is one of the most innovative sailing yachts built since her launch in 2010. Her proud owner has spared no expense to build his dream, providing her with her opulent luxury and technological delights.

The dining table at the starboard side of the deckhouse accommodates twelve guests. On portside of the deckhouse is a cozy seating area with a coffee table as the main centerpiece. The bar is equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator and ice maker.

Athos’ interior is at least as impressive as her exterior. Below deck she has all possible comforts, such as climate control, a Kaleidescape on-demand audio and video server in all guest cabins and the main saloon, a WiFi network with VSAT broadband and Satellite TV/DVD/CD/Radio/MP3 in all cabins.

The classic, timeless styling, beautiful details and grand furniture create an elegant and comfortable atmosphere on board Athos . Her layout consists of the saloon, galley, the main deck cabin with navigation area, four guest cabins and a master cabin. The engine compartment can be reached directly from the control room. Athos accommodates up to twelve guests and ten crew members to help the guests achieve a relaxed and luxurious sailing experience. To contribute to that experience, she has a wellness area with massage table on board, as well as a cinema with projector and Dolby surround system. The crew members have access to a walk-in fridge and laundry area.

All guest cabins have finishing in a different type of wood, which creates a unique ambiance in every cabin. The matching upholstery has been carefully picked. The two aft cabins (which can be transformed from twin to double beds) have aniegré and maple wood finishing. The two front guest rooms are finished in cherry and pear wood and are both equipped with a double bed and a Pullman. These cabins are also equipped with a couch and a pull-out desk. All guest cabins have adjoining en suite bathrooms.

The master cabin is finished with mahogany and has a kingsize bed, desk, daybed and a couch. The bathroom has a bath, shower/steamroom and his & hers sinks. Adjacent to the master cabin is the private aft deckhouse which is furnished with a secluded sitting area and daybed, as well as a private office. Next to the aft deckhouse is an owners’ cockpit with adjustable table.

The galley and pantry are fully equipped with Miele appliances, including a gimbal oven and hob, steam oven, combi microwave grill/oven, plate and cup warming drawers, an espresso machine, two dishwashers and various other mobile appliances. Everything to ensure the highest culinary standards.

Opposite the galley, is the imposing main salon, including a sitting area by the fireplace and a large ottoman with extendable footrests in the middle.

Designer Andre Hoek from Hoek Design Naval Architects, Holland Jachtbouw and a very dedicated owner worked together on this unique project. This collaboration led to the launch of a number of technical innovations, including a unique hydraulic system that spans more than 30 kilometres of wiring and delivers around 450 kW of power.

athos superyacht owner

This superyacht features an impressive 61.4m mainmast, Reckmann furling systems and Doyle sails. The twin Volvo Penta diesel engines deliver a cruising speed of 12 knots with a maximum of 14 knots and a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 11 knots. Furthermore, Athos has dual redundancy for virtually any system, to eliminate single points of failure. She also has a dynamic positioning system, a fully integrated stern anchor, a 5383 aluminium hull and a hydraulically operated centreboard.

Athos is the most technologically advanced classic sailing yacht built to date. She is Bureau Veritas classified and MCA compliant.

Huisfit transforms 62m S/Y Athos

The conversion project regularly employed up to fifty skilled workers for more than a year…….

Athos juxtapose: Left - Before, Right - After

Before acquiring the 62m Hoek- designed, Holland Jachtbouw-built Athos (2010), the new owner chartered  Athos for around a year. Although he enjoyed the yacht, he saw many ways in which it would possible to optimise and enhance the amenities and user experience. As the project evolved in his mind, the refit list grew, and what started as a large refit project soon came to embrace all aspects of the Huisfit proposition: Refit, Rebuild and Renewal.

The stern overhang needed to be extended and, on deck, cockpit layouts had to be redesigned and a new forward navigation deckhouse had to be added. New booms, new sails and carbon rigging would ensure improved sail management and performance. All systems were to be updated and a considerable amount of the interior was to be replaced or reconfigured and updated.

Hoek Design was, once again, involved in all naval architecture work to accommodate these changes, the interior styling and layout of the new owner’s cabin, one of the guest cabins, the main salon, the new crew service area and the navigation deckhouse. Peter Mikic Interiors were responsible for the layout and styling of the main deckhouse and for the overall guest interior decoration.

The extension, with a relocated pushpit, provides a new two-meter area for sunbeds behind the owners’ private cockpit.

The biggest change in this area was the replacement of the original curved staircase to the main deckhouse with a new stairway.

From the main deckhouse, stairs forward previously gave access to a lower salon in an open-plan setting with a showpiece galley. A fireplace was removed and a wall was built between the two areas to create a cosy and intimate media room to starboard. A long bookcase-built cross-ships and luxurious new furniture complete the scene.

The galley to port, behind the new wall, has been custom-rebuilt and all equipment updated for modern haute cuisine practices. In the crew quarters, the laundry has all-new appliances, the crew cabins have new floors and the crew mess enjoys the benefit of new worktops.

Other enhancements include all-new navigation, alarm and safety systems and new lighting throughout. All PLCs have been changed and pumps upgraded. All guest spaces benefit from a state-of-the-art communications and entertainment package. The main tender has been completely rebuilt and there is a new second tender. The bottom of the hull was blasted to bare aluminium before a full respray.

This conversion project regularly employed up to fifty skilled people for more than a year. Acting on behalf of the owner, project manager Jeremy “Bear” Wynne from Wynne Projects Ltd. concludes: “The new Athos looks amazing. The multiple modifications have been beautifully done. The attention to detail and finish is excellent. The additions and modifications have not only improved the functionality of the yacht, but they have also enhanced its appearance. The quality of Huisfit’s work is exceptional.”

Athos will be available to charter, through Y.CO , in the Caribbean and Bahamas for this winter season.

A billionaire NFL owner's superyacht is now available for charter. It'll cost you.

  • NFL owner Shahid Khan's superyacht Kismet is available for charter at $3 million a week.
  • Kismet, which will debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, features luxury amenities and can host 12 guests.
  • Added costs for provisions, gratuities, and taxes can raise the weekly charter cost to $5.4 million.

Insider Today

Want to vacation like a billionaire? You can — for $3 million a week.

The superyacht belonging to Shahid Khan, the owner of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars who is worth $13.3 billion, according to Forbes, is officially available for charter.

Kismet, Khan's new yacht, will make her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show later this month.

The 122-meter yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests — and a crew of 36 available to serve them — and, like any superyacht worth its weight, has some special amenities .

A "Balinese-inspired" spa features a hammam, sauna, and cryotherapy chamber, as well as a massage table and chromotherapy bathtub offering some sort of color-related treatment. For more active wellness, there's a gym, basketball court, and pickleball court.

There are three pools — two are jacuzzis — spread over six decks, four outdoor showers, four bars, four fireplaces, two fire pits, and one helipad. For your viewing pleasure, there is an outdoor cinema, and for your listening pleasure, a DJ booth and grand piano.

And because billionaires love to play, there is a suite of water toys aboard, including Jet Skis, SeaBobs, e-foils, and WaveRunners.

Khan is a committed superyacht owner. His previous superyacht, also named Kismet, was purchased by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt last year. While its final sales price was not disclosed, it was listed for about $160 million. Renamed Whisper, the yacht was built by the same German shipyard as the new Kismet, Lürssen, and measured 95 meters.

"The yacht has exceeded all expectations of the client for whom we have built his third yacht in total," Peter Lürssen, a managing partner at Lürssen, said in a statement about the newest Kismet.

Kismet is the largest yacht on display at the Monaco Yacht Show, which will feature 120 superyachts . Renaissance, the second largest at 112 meters, charters for the same weekly price of $3 million.

While the nine-figure sales prices of these yachts make their seven-figure charter rates seem like a bargain, renting out a superyacht is not for the faint of wallet. In addition to the charter fee, there are costs associated with provisions which can come to as much as 40% of the fee; gratuities, as much as 20% of the fee; and taxes, also as much as 20%. That means a week aboard the Kismet can actually cost as much as $5.4 million.

“The yacht has exceeded all expectations of the client for whom we have built his third yacht in total,” said Peter Lürssen , a managing partner at Lürssen.

While the charter fee may appear steep, additional expenses such as provisions, gratuities, and taxes can inflate the total cost of a week aboard the Kismet to a staggering $5.4 million.

Why It Matters : This move by Khan signifies a growing trend among billionaires to monetize their luxury assets. It also highlights the increasing demand for ultra-luxury experiences among the super-rich, who are willing to pay premium prices for exclusive experiences.

The charter of Kismet also underscores the popularity of superyachts as a symbol of opulence and status among the world’s wealthiest individuals.

The fact that Khan’s previous yacht was bought by another high-profile billionaire, Eric Schmidt, further emphasizes this point.

From the World Superyacht Awards judges’ report: “The quality and practicality of the work so impressed the judges that they had little hesitation in selecting her as the winner.”

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia

athos superyacht owner

Trans-Siberian heritage

Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.

In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays.

Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.

The cultural center of Siberia

The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.

The large Siberian sea and ligers

athos superyacht owner

Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .

Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.

Siberian Silicon Valley

athos superyacht owner

Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.

For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .

Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.

Memento Mori

athos superyacht owner

Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of  "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.

Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings.

Novosibirsk underground

athos superyacht owner

Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.

The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey.

THE BASICS:

UTC time zone +7, MSC +4 City telephone code for local calls 383 Currency: Ruble Average winter temperature: -18…-22 C Average summer temperature: +20…+22C The main landmarks, parks, theaters and the main streets of the city are on the right bank of the Ob.
