American 18

The American 18 Daysailer is ideal for those who are seeking a spacious and comfortable daysailer which is also designed for speed and performance. Design features include a self bailing cockpit, molded in drink cooler storage areas, three storage compartments, kickup rudder and centerboard, adjustable jib tracks, Harken hardware, and stainless rigging. As with all American Sail products, the American 18 is constructed of hand-laid fiberglass with positive foam floatation for a durable and safe boat. The wide beam and flat bottom planing hull allow for exceptional performance in a light breeze or in a heavy wind. This boat is designed to sail flat with minimal heel. It is Offered as a package with boat, sails, and galvanized trailer. Optional features include roller furling jib, outboard engines or trolling motor, trailering cover, and mooring cover.  Definitely one of the best small sailboats you will find available on the market!

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Anyone know anything or have literature for Sea Crown sailboats? Apparently these were made in Ceres, CA. There's a 25' Sea Crown for sale I've seen but I would like some input before I commit. Thanks!

Never heard of them. But there are somethings that you should check on all boats. Condition of the keel bolts, water in the hull core, water in the deck core, water leaking through deck fittings, water leaking through the deck-hull joint, water leaking through (insert name of boat here) The core can have some moisture in it and not be that big a deal or it could be rotted and the boat could be worthless. The boat won't look any different from the outside. Some people say "Oh I looked at it, it looked fine to me" Then they start trying to repair it and it is a disaster. It's good that you are asking questions now though before you commit. From what I have seen most people on this board are more concerned with the condition of an old boat more than the maker. Of course the make is important but who cares if you have a freedom yacht if the hull and deck cores are rotted out inside?  

How old is it? A lot of the boats from the early '70s and older have heavy solid fiberglass hulls and no core. Mid-70s OSHA regs made fiberglass more expensive and to get the same stiffness with less glass they started using cored hulls. It also makes the hull's lighter for the same strength. Anyway... a lot of the older boats look awful ... so you can get them for cheap... then gut them, strip the deck hardware... paint ... put in new interior and you are good to go. I've done four boats this way already and have been happy every time. Fiberglass is not that hard to repair but a bad core (or even a soft spot) is a lot more work and maybe not worth it. r

Check out ebay and craigslist and look for a boat between 1970 and 1976. Be patient. In my experience the best time to shop for a boat is September. Everyone who has not had their boat out of the slip in two or more seasons considers selling. Older Coronados and Columbias are heavy solid hulls. I recently down sized to a trailerable boat but I really liked the performance of my 1974 Coronado 25', especially in heavier winds. I've owned two MacGregor 21's a Coronado 23' and Coronado 25' and now I own a Macgregor V222. I've never paid more than $1,400 for a boat and that one included the trailer, motor, and three sails. My current boat I got for $800 with a sail inventory of 5 sails and a decent trailer. I had to gut her and repaint but all in all I ended up with a boat that looks good for a total of $2,000 for boat plus parts etc. I purchased a Briggs & Straton 5h.p. for $600. The second Mac V21 I owned I got for $500 with a new genoa and the genoa was still in the original wrapping. I don't think it had ever been flown. I know where that boat is and I know the owner wants to sell it. It need all of the wood replaced and the interior is musty but with a lot of sand paper and some decent parts you would have a good boat. Good luck, r
