Lanakai-super-sportfishing-yacht

The biggest sportfish superyachts in the world

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The next few years are shaping up well for the super-sportfish market with the Global Order Book reporting 26 projects currently on order or in build. Some special mentions include the Viking 90 flagship, a 24 metre sportfish chase boat underway at Vanquish and Royal Huisman 's mega 52 metre sportfish hull Project 406 which was announced in 2021. As we patiently await this new wave of uber-luxe fishing vessels, we take a look at the biggest already afloat...

1. Bad Company

The 43.9 metre sportfish yacht Bad Company (née Marlena ) was delivered in 1998 and was the largest sportfish in the world at the time. She changed ownership in 2013 and sent to Spain where she received a comprehensive refit and lengthened by six metres to her current length of 43.9 metres. ABS classed and MCA compliant, this all-aluminium superyacht accommodates up to 11 guests in a master suite, VIP, two doubles and one twin with a Pullman berth, all with LCD television screens and full en suite bathroom facilities.

2. Mea Culpa

Despite her size, Mea Culpa can reach a top speed of 23.5 knots thanks to a pair of 2735hp MTU 12V4000M90 diesel engines. The McMullen & Wing superyacht, designed by Jack Sarin , measures in at a hefty 42.28 metres. Mea Culpa can accommodate up to eight guests and six crew in her interiors, which have been designed by Marnell Corrao . She boasts a deck jacuzzi on board for post-fishing relaxation.  Mea Culpa was delivered in 2003.

3. Forty Love

Forty Love , formerly Don Elegante , began life in 1988 when she was commissioned by her first owner. According to BOAT Pro, the yacht ended up being reconstructed on an existing hull built by Westport in 1990 and was finally finished in 2002. Today, the 42 metre sportfish motor yacht sails under the name Forty Love and was the recipient of a two million-euro refit in 2020. Highlights include a main dining area with 360-degree views as well as a swimming platform with steps down into the water.

Lanakai , built by Yachting Developments , is the newest addition to the list of mega sportfish yachts. Delivered in 2017, the 39.5 metre superyacht is constructed entirely from carbon fibre to a design by Michael Peters  and can reach a top speed of 30 knots thanks to the power of two 3100.0hp MTU diesel engines. Spread over four decks, Lanaki can accommodate 10 guests and six crew. Her interiors, designed by Naylor Booth , sport an alliance of finely crafted American walnut joinery and muted fabrics. Lanakai boasts two saloons within her spacious interiors as well as a bar and stainless-steel aft deck barbecue for preparing the catch of the day.

5. Red Sapphire

Dutch shipyard Heesen , known today for its sporty steel and aluminium hulls, launched a series of sportfishing superyachts including Red Sapphire which splashed in 1999. The 39 metre is easy to spot with its distinct triangular form and a red stripe that runs the length of the yacht. Built for speed, she was capable of reaching speeds of 35 knots back in the day, powered by twin MTU 16V4000M90 engines.

6. Obsessions

The 38 metre Obsessions is the second Heesen built to make it into this round-up of supersized sportfish yachts. Launched in 1996, she arrived three years earlier than her sportfishing sister Red Sapphire . She was designed by Dutch studio Mulder Design and can sleep up to 10 guests.

The 37.19 metre sportfish Mary P was delivered in 2008 by Trinity Yachts . Built to satisfy the ultimate fisherman, this custom yacht incorporates a Simrad forward-looking sonar in the bow and a transom specifically designed to back down on fish at 10 knots. Twin 2,550hp Caterpillar diesel engines give her a top speed of 25 knots. Mary P was designed by Doug Sharp  together with Geoff Van Aller and is the only sportfish yacht to be built to ABS class. Her interiors have been designed by Judy Bell Davis and she can sleep up to eight guests and three crew below deck. On board amenities include a skylounge, bar and a formal dining area forward.

Boss was delivered by Dutch shipyard Feadship 1988 under the name Gallant Lady - the fifth in a series of yachts owned by the late Jim Moran. When she was launched she measured 35.35 metres in length but has since been extended to 36.27 metres. The yacht was refitted at Palmer Johnson in 1999 and can sleep up to 10 guests across four staterooms.

The 10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts Ever Built

Check out the largest sportfish yachts on the water..

The largest sportfish yachts are designed for luxurious multi-day outings with family or friends, as well as heading far offshore in search of the biggest fish in the deepest waters. Sportfish yachts are powerboats built to arrive at fishing grounds fast, with a hull design capable of cruising through any sea conditions. Most are equipped with tournament fishing options such as tuna towers, kill boxes, large tackling stations, ice makers, and live bait wells. Here are 10 of the biggest sportfish yachts ever built. These fishing boats are very impressive.

1. 144′ Trinity 1998 | MARLENA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

At the time of her delivery in 1998 by Trinity Yachts , MARLENA was the largest sportfish yacht in the world at 126 feet. In 2013, she was purchased by an owner who lengthened her to her current length of 144 feet. She was sold again and is undergoing a refit including a complete repower.

2. 138’ McMullen & Wing 2003 | MEA CULPA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

When Jack Sarin was tasked with designing MEA CULPA, he was given the challenge of designing a boat that could fish in the most remote corners of the world but hold her own in the stylish ports of the Caribbean and the Mediterranean . With no expense spared in terms of quality and comfort and decked out with an impressive array of fishing equipment, she manages to achieve both and has fished and cruised all over the world.

3. 128′ Heesen 1999 | RED SAPPHIRE

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

Capable of 34 knots, RED SAPPHIRE is a Heesen 3900 sportfishing yacht built to ABS class. She features a semi-displacement aluminum hull and aluminum superstructure, with teak decks. Equipped with an ultra-modern stabilization system, she’s powered by 2 MTU 16V4000 M90 3,644hp diesel engines and propelled by her twin screws propellers. Heesen also built OBSESSIONAS, a 125-foot sportfish in 1996, and KARYATIS, a 105-foot sportfish in 2005.

4. 122’ Trinity | MARY P

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

MARY P was the first hull built and launched by the Trinity Yachts’ New Orleans shipyard after its post-Katrina reopening of that shipyard on July 5, 2006. With naval architecture by Doug Sharp of Sharp Designs, many other unique details enhance her role as a sportfishing yacht, such as a fully automated anchor deployment and retrieval system, specially designed underwater lighting to enhance her performance when night fishing, and a flybridge that maintains a good line of sight for the captain.

5. 119’ Denison 1991 | PHARAOH

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

With naval architecture by Joe Langlois, PHARAOH, now SEACALL, is considered the queen of tournament sports fishing and angling. The sportfish motor yacht features four double staterooms, 5 heads, a spacious salon and galley, extensive electronics, and twin 1960hp MTU diesel engines. She was refit in 2005.

6. 114′ Logos Marine 2008 | SEYA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

SEYA raises the question — at what point does a yacht stop being a sportfish and instead becomes a superyacht with a fishing cockpit? She was built in 2008 for a Middle Eastern client who specifically requested a cold-molded yacht due to his positive experience with this sturdy material. Logos’ 105-foot custom sportfish is also built with the same cold-molded, laminated epoxy wood with a fiberglass/epoxy skin.

7. 112’ Hakvoort 1988 | ACE OF DIAMONDS

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

ACE OF DIAMONDS (formerly SEA EAGLE) was custom built by Hakvoort Shipyard . This luxury sportfish vessel’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are the work of Pieter Beeldsnijder Design. She was last refitted in 2005.

8. 108′ Burger 2001 | SARAH BETH

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

Few sportfishing yachts have what it takes to make long passages to remote fishing locations with both speed and comfort. One that does is the 108’ Burger SARAH BETH. Powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel MTU 12V4000s, this sportfish exploration yacht has an 8,025-gallon fuel capacity can cruise at 24 knots, and tops out at 28 knots.

9. 105′ Jim Smith Boats | MARLENA

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

The latest masterwork by Jim Smith Tournament Boats of Stuart, Florida, MARLENA was designed and built for Sam Gershowitz, owner of Star Island Yacht Club in Montauk, New York. She is the largest boat built by Jim Smith Boats.

10. 105′ Broward 2002 | ODYSSEY

10 Biggest Sportfish Yachts

Delivered in spring 2002, this Broward was powered with the new MTU 16V2000 series easily one of the most amazing sportfish yachts ever built. ODYSSEY was built for Glenn Straub, the former owner of Broward Marine. She was designed by Luiz de Basto and the interior is by the Broward in-house design team.

Supersize Sport-Fishers

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: January 12, 2021

Viking Yachts 92

Once upon a time, sport-fishing boats were sized to meet lesser demands. Ernest Hemingway’s Pilar was 38 feet, which was large enough to get him into the Gulf Stream to chase marlin and the occasional U-boat during World War II. The first Rybovich, Miss Chevy II , was just 34 feet long, while the first Hatteras convertible sport-fisher, Knit Wits , pushed the length-overall envelope at 41 feet some 60 years ago.

Today, sport-fishers have soared past the 90-plus-foot mark with regularity, ranging up to the 144-foot Trinity Bad Company (originally Marlena ) that carries a dozen guests and a half-dozen crew on adventures to far-flung fishing grounds.

For years, both production and custom-built sport-fishers have grown. Owners demanded vessels that were bigger and more comfortable for running on their own bottoms from the United States to the fertile Pacific waters of Costa Rica and Guatemala to chase supersize sailfish and blue, black and striped marlin. To chug across the Atlantic for the summer billfish tournaments in Bermuda. To chase world records, wherever the bite was at the moment. It’s an attitude reminiscent of the film Endless Summer , where surfers gallop around the planet in search of the perfect wave.

The builders Viking, Hatteras and Bertram have long been the 900-pound gorillas of production sport-fishers, drawing the line at around 90 feet, with the Viking 92 emerging as a front-runner in this category. To date, Viking has built 19 of its 92-footers, with hull numbers 20 and 21 currently in production. While the Hatteras 92 and Bertram 80 are out of production, they still enjoy popularity on the brokerage market.

On the custom, cold-molded construction side of sport-fish yachts, North Carolina’s Jarrett Bay Boatworks launched the 90-foot Jaruco in 2017. The boat is a 44-knot battlewagon with a foredeck for touch-and-go helicopter landings. And for those who believe wooden hulls raise more fish, Bayliss Boatworks—also in North Carolina—has the 90-foot Reel Wheels II , with five staterooms and 38-knot speed, making quick work of runs to the canyons or back to the scales on tournament day.

In general, the hallmarks of a great sport-fisher, at least those in the 40-to-60-foot range, have included nimbleness when fighting a fish, as well as speed. Today’s larger sport-fishers can compete in those areas as well.

103-foot Burger Northland

Consider the 92-foot Viking Fa La Me , owned by Frank Rodriguez. It swept the Bermuda Triple Crown tournament series with the highest point total in the event’s history and became the first three-time winner of the series. Another 92-foot Viking, A Work of Art , grabbed second place in the 2017 Orange Beach Billfish Classic release division, and the 95-foot Jim Smith Relentless Pursuit took the tournament in 2019 with a 658.2-pound blue marlin and third-place wahoo.

The reigning queen of the mega-sport-fisher world, though, continues to be Bad Company , which was at first 132 feet length overall and subsequently stretched. Its top speed with twin 3,500 hp Paxman V-12s is 33 knots, which at first blush may not seem special. Keep in mind, however, that a 300-gross-ton 144-footer traveling at 33 knots can maintain that speed in rough seas while smaller, albeit faster sport-fishers have to pull the throttles way back. The amount of hull in the water matters.

The newest of the big-gun sport-fishers is the 130-foot Lanakai . Michael Peters designed it, and New Zealand’s Yachting Developments built it. It is the largest carbon-fiber sport-fisher and has twin 3,150 hp V-12 MTU 4000 M93 diesels that reportedly push it to 30 knots while carrying 10 guests and six crew in superyacht style.

So what changed to make larger sport-fishers tournament-viable, aside from owners being willing to spend considerably more money on a bigger boat?

First, of course, is maneuverability, which is essential—especially when faced with an angry blue marlin. Hydraulic bow thrusters are a key component of these vessels, allowing a captain to position the yacht precisely when backing down hard. Captains describe the big sport-fishers as being just as nimble as smaller boats.

On Fa La Me , one of the secret weapons is the fly-by-wire Viking independent programmable electrohydraulic rudders, eliminating the tie bars between rudders, and allowing independent rudder control, much like pod drives but with conventional shafts and props. The setup optimizes maneuverability at low speeds. Add to that modern technology such as joystick controls, which make the captain’s job easier. Two fingers on a joystick on the bridge rail keeps the yacht perfectly positioned for the crew in the cockpit.

Available horsepower has also driven up the sport-fisher’s length overall, with up to 7,000 hp now tucked into engine rooms for hammer-down power. Add in other technology such as gyrostabilizers that make a yacht more secure for stand-up tackle, and the result is large sport fishing yachts that are as agile as smaller sport-fishers in the hands of an experienced helmsman.

129 foot yacht Lanakai

Sheer size has other benefits. Consider the cockpit on Bad Company , which spans the vessel’s 27-foot beam. A half-dozen crew can be prepping bait and rigging lines and leaders, and never be crowded. That same width also allows outriggers that spread 120 feet to get lines into clean trolling lanes.

Mega-sport-fishers also have more balconies and mezzanines than Italy’s La Scala opera house, so it’s easier to keep a eye on the spread. Three decks on most offer good viewing of the fishing action. And the height matters. A taller flybridge allows for better visibility than tuna towers on smaller craft.

Larger yachts also mean more rod-and-tackle stowage and immense fridges and freezers with multiple ice chippers to keep the catch fresh and cool. Enclosed bridges provide comfort on extended passages as well as weather protection on snotty days.

The owner of Lanakai , according to Peters, puts those and other features to good use. “This owner is an absolute sportsman and adventurer,” Peters says. “He wants to stay out for weeks. He wants to fish Fiji and the [Great] Barrier Reef. He wants to roam far and wide in search of big fish. He had an 85-footer, and it simply wasn’t big enough for his goals. Besides, it’s not just about fishing; a water-level cockpit gives great access to the water for diving too.”

This type of boat is indeed a beautiful thing. As Luiz de Basto, designer of the 105-foot Broward Odyssey and the 95-foot Seaforce IX sport-fisher series, puts it: “Something that I, as a yacht designer, realized many years ago is that the pure, classic fishing boat—its unique purpose and the resulting lines—are probably the most original creation of the vast and diverse American pleasure-boat universe. From 30-footers to the largest ones, they all share a sporting purpose and beautiful elegance that demonstrates America’s ingenuity at its best.”

The style also represents fishing at its finest. Sam Gershowitz—owner of the Star Island Yacht Club and Marina in Montauk, New York—is a serial owner of sport-fishers, all named Marlena . His current big gun is a 105-foot Jim Smith. When asked how he planned to fish the boat, his answer perfectly summed up mega-sport-fishers: “very comfortably.”

Why Choose a Sportsfish Yacht?

Avid fishermen, anglers and fishing enthusiasts should consider a sportsfish yacht if that is the sole purpose of the vessel. Whether it will be used for recreational fishing activities with your family and friends or world-class fishing tournaments for big prizes and bigger accolades, if you plan to be on the water exclusively to drop a line, a sportsfish yacht is the way to go.

Sportsfish yachts are outfitted with all the amenities needed for fishing, from outriggers and towers to live wells and fighting chairs, fish lockers and freezers and, of course, copious rod holders. But these yachts aren’t all fishing and no-frills. Depending on the size, many sportsfish yachts also feature main salons, galleys, staterooms and all of the amenities found on a motor yacht, with the added bonus of the fishing kit.

Sportsfish yachts are sometimes owned in tandem with larger motor yachts or superyachts as an added amenity, with the sole purpose of casting a line and reeling in the big one.

9 Massive Sportfishing Boats That Double as Luxe Superyachts

Here are our favorite megayacht-sized convertibles, along with a 35-foot retro classic for a little balance. happy fishing., kevin koenig, kevin koenig's most recent stories.

9 of the world's largest sportfishing machines.

There was a time not so long ago that a 50- or 60-foot convertible would have been the biggest sportfish in the marina. But times have changed, and in the place of those trusty battlewagons of yore has emerged a class of fishing boats that are their own subsect of the superyacht category.

Whether they’re built by semi-production giants, small-town custom builders, or as one-off projects by superyacht yards, these boats are designed to do one thing: catch monster fish. While most have the conventional shape—a long forefoot, tuna tower for sighting schools of fish or birds that are feeding on them, and the fighting chair in the cockpit—others are deviating into new territory.

Vanquish has a new 80-footer, with a plumb bow and cruiser-like profile, that has been modified as a serious sportfishing machine, while Royal Huisman is taking the concept into extreme superyacht territory with its 171-footer that’s a six-deck superyacht shaped like a huge convertible. This category is morphing somewhat with these new designs, but for the most part, the changes are more about luxurious interiors and better technology in the engine rooms.

Have a look at our list of the biggest and baddest luxury sportfishermen, plus one pint-sized classic thrown in for balance.

mega fishing yacht

Viking is the leader of the semi-production sportfish market and its latest boat shows why. This new 90C flagship replaced a larger 92-footer so it could avoid the Tier III regulations that impacted the 92C. But the beauty is that this boat has the same size cockpit as the 92-footer and the same interior layouts, which include megayacht touches like a standard underlit Lumix bartop in the salon. This Viking has a top end of about 40 knots, and the company is looking to break that barrier as newer engines become available.

Jim Smith Tournament Boats 86

mega fishing yacht

This beautiful convertible, named Gina Lisa, has a cold-molded wood hull penned by the world-famous naval architect Donald L. Blount and Associates. The hull is constructed out of mahogany while composite materials are used elsewhere. The 86 features a five-stateroom, five-head layout that means the crew will have some privacy while on the tournament trail. Cruise speed is said to be in the mid-30-knot range, a very respectable gallop for vessel that displaces 125,000 pounds.

‘Lanakai’ 130

mega fishing yacht

From New Zealand’s Yachting Developments comes this monster of a sportfish. The 129-foot, all-carbon Lanakai is every bit a megayacht, albeit one with tuna and billfish in mind. Case in point, the massive, 59-foot-long Rupp outriggers give this yacht’s bait a formidable spread. Lanakai also has 6,300 hp powerplants, which helps it see speeds in the mid-30-knot range. The owner, who is on his fourth Yachting Developments hull, uses this boat, too. In his first 15 months aboard Lanakai logged 8,500 nautical miles.

Spencer 74 Centurion

mega fishing yacht

Spencer Yachts builds its cold-molded vessels in tiny Wanchese, N.C., right in the heart of the Carolina custom sportfish world. Despite turning just a handful of boats each year, a Spencer 64 was the league leader in the 2022 Sport Fishing Championship. This 74 Centurion is the builder’s 100th hull. With twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 M96s, the 70 can top out at a very fast 44 knots while running at a 37-knot cruise. Its transom is done in carbon fiber.

Rybovich 62

mega fishing yacht

This may not be the largest yacht on this list, but what’s lacking in size is made up for in pedigree, and arguably the most classic convertible lines in this group. Michael Rybovich & Sons in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is one of the most recognizable names in all of yachting, with a history dating back to 1919. The 62 has a glass windshield that provides excellent natural light and good views in the cockpit—an uncommon feature for serious sportfishing boats. An aft galley arrangement will come in handy when frying up all the mahi this 62 is sure to land. And of course, there is the cockpit, which is designed for boating blue marlin.

Vripack 171

mega fishing yacht

This 171-foot behemoth from Dutch naval architect Vripack in conjunction with Dutch yard Royal Huisman will hold the title of world’s largest sportfish when it launches. Thanks to clever design, this six-deck megayacht still holds true to the basic exterior lines of a sportfishing convertible. The designers said they were aiming for a penthouse aesthetic with the interior, and many of the decks are designed for optimal viewing of the fish-fighting action happening below. The hull and superstructure are made of aluminum. Vripack execs have described it as a “sportfish on steroids.”

Jarrett Bay 90

mega fishing yacht

The 90-foot from Beaufort, North Carolina’s, Jarrett Bay Boatworks —a heavyweight in the Carolina-custom world—is notable for its advanced infusion and lamination techniques in the decks and superstructure. These construction methods were put into place to save weight, resulting in a faster top end and increased fuel efficiency. The cold-molded hull should provide a soft ride. That’s extra important for this boat, which will have a leggy range owing to a 4,000-gallon fuel tank.

Vanquish VQ80

mega fishing yacht

This VQ80 from Dutch dayboat builder Vanquish is a bit of a surprise because of its lines, which are more like a contemporary cruisers. But it’s a formidable steed for anglers, nonetheless. Conceived as a chase boat for a Heesen megayacht, the Guido de Groot design has a sizzling top end of more than 50 knots. As for creature comforts, the vessel has three staterooms and two heads—not lavish for an 80-footer but one has to assume the owner will likely sleep on the mothership. Will it start a new design for sportfish builders? Hardly likely, but it’s nice to see a new profile fishing the canyons.

Bertram 35FB

mega fishing yacht

Bertram has always proved that a sportfisherman doesn’t need a megayacht-sized vessel to catch pelagics. Modeled on the Bertram 31, one of the most iconic powerboats ever, the Bertram 35 recaptures that classic boat’s magic with its modern hull and engines. Even at 35 feet, it has a workable cockpit for fighting fish, and flybridge helm for spotting them. The Bertram also has lines that harken back to its predecessor, meaning that wherever the boat pulls into port, it is sure to draw admirers. Most of the 35s are built at Bertram’s headquarters in Tampa, but it will also be built in Italy, though in smaller quantities.
