Portrait of a building site / Jeanneau, the history of a French yachting flagship from 1950 to 1982

Founded in the 50s, the Jeanneau shipyard is a benchmark in the global yachting industry. A look back at the history and development of this legendary Vendée shipyard.

Maxime Leriche

Henry Jeanneau : a visionary

The history of the jeanneau shipyard began in the 1950s, when Henry Jeanneau started building a small sportsboat to race in a motorboat race called the 6 Hours of Paris.

jeanneau yacht factory france

Propelled by a 30 horsepower outboard , Henry took the top spots on the circuit. His thirst for entrepreneurship, combined with a pronounced taste for water sports, led him to create his own shipyard , the Western Nautical Hall based in Les Herbiers.

Initially offering a short range of products made of mahogany, Henry Jeanneau turned to polyester, and in 1957 brought out his first model made of this innovative material.

jeanneau yacht factory france

A new factory was inaugurated in 1961, and the shipyard was renamed Jeanneau . In 1963, the shipyard launched its first mass production in polyester with the Seabird a cabin-cruiser of 4.90 m, offering a small cabin with two berths and powered by a 40 hp outboard .

Le Seabird de Jeanneau

With this multipurpose boat, Jeanneau has made its mark against its direct competitor, Bénéteau.

Henry Jeanneau , assisted by his wife Nelly and Robert Rigaudeau, set up a network of dealers to represent his brand throughout the country. In 1964, the French discovered sailing following Eric Tabarly's victory in the Transat . Henry Jeanneau took advantage of this craze and launched his first sailing boat, the Alizé a dinghy of 5.50 m.

Le Jeanneau Alizé

It was followed in 1969 by the Sangria a 7.62 m keelboat designed by Philippe Harlé , then by the Love Love measuring 6 m. These two models will be produced in a total of nearly 3000 units, and will give Jeanneau legitimacy on the market of liveaboard yachts .

Le Jeanneau Love Love

Innovations and commercial successes

In the early 1970s, the Jeanneau shipyard became the property of an American group, Bangor Punta. Henry Jeanneau remained at the head of the shipyard , while being involved in the management of Gibert Marine , and the development of new structures, always in the nautical field.

In 1972, after extensive research and the production of dozens of prototypes, Jeanneau developed an innovative manufacturing process that allowed it to mold entire hulls in a single piece. The rotational molding process, due to its exemplary solidity, was a great success with fishermen and marine professionals, with brands such as Rigiflex or Fun Yak.

Le Melody

In 1976, Jeanneau launched the Melody 10,50 m a sloop designed by André Mauric . One of the first models of the series is famous by taking the start of the Transat 76, won by Tabarly on Pen Duick VI . Led by Yves Olivaux, it will be ranked at 25 e place in an edition marked by very strong lows.

Le Jeanneau Flirt

The same year, under the leadership of Robert Rigaudeau, Jeanneau launches the Flirt this 6-meter multipurpose coastal cruiser will be available as a keelboat or a dinghy . It will be produced in 1700 copies during a decade. In the continuity of this success, the site designs the Brio of 6,90 m the first Jeanneau to be equipped with a saildrive engine, and will be produced in more than 1000 units.

A nautical icon: the Leader

jeanneau yacht factory france

In 1980, Jeanneau returned to its first love by developing an inshore Formula 1 racing team, which was to be famous for 4 seasons on the international circuit. The same year, Jeanneau launched a nautical icon: the Leader .

Le Leader 575

First of the rope , the Leader 575 is considered as the boat that launched the Leader spirit because of its excellent nautical qualities and its great versatility.

Indeed, the Leader 575 is known for being very stable and easy to maneuver , making it perfect for sea outings with family or friends. Its modern and sporty design, as well as its large storage capacity, also make it a popular choice for water sports enthusiasts such as diving , fishing and water skiing .

Le Leader en plein rally africain

In order to ensure the viability of its newborn, Jeanneau has entered the Nyamey-Bamako Rally, a 2,000 km African endurance event. Specially designed in Kevlar, the Leader Niger 510 is the winner of this African adventure with Gérard D'Aboville at the helm. That same year, Club Méditerranée entrusts Jeanneau with the renewal of its fleet of water ski boats.

PRESTIGE History

Prestige heritage.

PRESTIGE was born more than 30 years ago with the desire to create exceptional boats, designed for exceptional customers, who aspire to live out their dreams. Driven by passion, craftsmanship, and talent, PRESTIGE is a world leader in today’s international motor yacht market, with a heritage built on the great industrial savoir-faire of the JEANNEAU shipyard.  Discover the key milestones in its history.

BIRTH OF THE JEANNEAU SHIPYARD, AN INSTANT SUCCESS

Henri Jeanneau, a powerboat racing enthusiast, created the Jeanneau shipyard.  From the very first lines of those early wooden boats, Jeanneau models have been distinguished by their innovative technical solutions, timeless design, and artisanal savoir-faire. This shipyard was a pioneer, being among the first to use fiberglass technology with polyester resin.

THE FIRST PRESTIGE MODEL

Jeanneau, with the long-term collaboration of Garroni Design, launched the first PRESTIGE on the market of luxury motor yachts. The PRESTIGE 41 marked the beginning of the PRESTIGE brand story, earning its reputation for contemporary style and seaworthiness.

THE FIRST PRESTIGE FLYBRIDGE

The PRESTIGE 36 introduced the brand to Flybridge motor yachts segment, giving birth to first generation of the F-LINE range. PRESTIGE Flybridges were appreciated for their spacious storage, wide sundecks, and full helm station, for fully enjoying life at sea.

PRESTIGE EXPANSION

During this period, PRESTIGE experienced rapid expansion with the opening of a modern production facility next to the historic Jeanneau shipyard, in Les Herbiers, France.

EXPANSION TO NORTH AMERICA

In 2010, PRESTIGE ventured to expand its global presence by establishing a dealer network in North America.

F-LINE SECOND GENERATION

PRESTIGE became a separate brand, thanks to the success of the 500: the “Icon,” the first model of the second generation of the F-LINE.  The PRESTIGE 500  offered innovative features, such as the “owner's suite” and the 360°view onboard, defining some of the key characteristics of the brand.

LAUNCH OF THE S-LINE

At this time, the first 500S and the 60S were launched in response to a request for sportier handling and lifestyle onboard. The PRESTIGE S-Line features sporty yachts, where even the smallest detail has been designed to combine performance and reactivity, without compromise.

LARGEST DEALER NETWORK IN EUROPE

PRESTIGE became a key player on the international stage, benefiting from the largest European dealer network. The success of the PRESTIGE 500 propelled PRESTIGE beyond Europe and onto the international stage, and notably on the US market.

THE LARGEST PRESTIGE YACHTS: the 750, A 75-FOOT MOTOR YACHT

PRESTIGE reached another milestone with the launch of its flagship yacht:  the PRESTIGE 750. This motor yacht redefined comfort and contemporary design, earning multiple awards, including the 2014 WORLD YACHTS TROPHIES in the categories “Best Layout” and “Most Achieved," the 2014 Nautic Design Award, and the 2015 European Power Boat of the Year.

A COMPLETE LINE OF YACHTS, FROM 40 TO 75 FEET

As a market leader, PRESTIGE launched the 680 and 680 S, featuring exceptional interiors and innovative design, receiving widespread acclaim for their remarkable achievements.  They featured the novel concept of a raised forward owner’s cabin, and they offered an independent cabin with private access and bright natural lighting.  Recognized for these innovations, the PRESTIGE 680 was named Motor Boat of the Year 2016.

A TRULY GLOBAL PRESENCE

With the launch of four major new models – the 560, the 560S, the 630, and the 630S –  PRESTIGE continued to develop its product offer, supported by an ever-expanding international network of marine professionals.  By 2017, PRESTIGE had established a truly global presence, with 4,000 owners around the world sharing the values of the brand.  The success of the PRESTIGE brand is the result of an audacious product development plan and an ambitious strategy to conquer the luxury powerboat market.

THE LAUNCH OF A TRUE BEST SELLER : PRESTIGE 520

The 520 is an evolution of the iconic PRESTIGE 500, concentrating all the knowledge and experience of the shipyard in the field of luxury motor yachts. “We have incorporated evolutions in the 520, while preserving its heritage and timeless design. We wanted this flybridge to last through the years without becoming outdated, remaining a reference on the market of 50-footers,” explains Camillo GARRONI, of GARRONI Design."

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF YACHT BUILDING

This year is a significant milestone for PRESTIGE, with the celebration of its 30th anniversary.

LAUNCH OF THE PRESTIGE X-LINE DEDICATED TO LUXURY AND ART DE VIVRE

With this new X-line, dedicated to the luxury of space and to the Art de Vivre, PRESTIGE keeps innovating and enhancing onboard comfort and well-being.  The X-Line is designed as your own private island, an escape from everyday life. The X70, the first yacht in the new X-Line, redefines space, light, and luxury, placing an accent on fine materials and exceptionally high-quality finish.  Life aboard the X70 combines the comfort of a luxury villa and the pleasures of life at sea in a radically new way.

THE PRESTIGE 690 BECOMES THE F-LINE FLAGSHIP

This new yacht reflects the heritage of the brand while integrating all the latest evolutions. Bright and spacious, with an immense flybridge, each detail onboard has been carefully considered for living close to the sea.

A NEW DIMENSION OF PRESTIGE: LAUNCH OF THE M-LINE

Entering the multihull motor yacht market, PRESTIGE takes a major step, offering an all-new experience in the art of living well.  The M48 is a villa that opens on the sea, with redefined living spaces and infinite views.

TWO MAJOR LAUNCHES... THE F4.9 AND THE M8

The two new models strengthen and expand the PRESTIGE product range.  With the M8, the brand-new flagship of the line, PRESTIGE enters a new market sector, while the F4.9 brings an innovative new design to the segment, in which PRESTIGE is already the market leader.

THIRD GENERATION OF THE F-LINE The F4.9 marks the birth of the 3rd generation of the F-Line.  This new model introduces innovative new features, such as the Oceanview galley and the semi-main deck master suite, as well as the versatile flybridge.

BRAND-NEW FLAGSHIP

The M8 flagship, built in Italy at the Monfalcone shipyard, offers smooth, serene cruising that is more respectful of the environment, with reduced energy consumption.

The original Jeanneau factory is located in Les Herbiers, in Vendée (France), producing exceptional sailing and motor yachts since 1957. Henri Jeanneau founded it, already passionate about planes and cars. Henry started making motorboats and discovered a new passion for power boating, one that began while watching a boat pass by his window. Soon after, at Les Herbiers, he began to build a wooden hull with which he competed in the 6-hour race in Paris, the largest national boat race at the time.

Jeanneau specialised in monohulls, but he created a subsidiary specialising in multihulls called Lagoon catamarans. Jeanneau (and Lagoon) joined the Bénéteau group in 1995.

We visited the Jeanneau factory in 2017 when we were still Jeanneau dealers. We collected some photos of the construction process. In addition, a video we made of the plant is available on the Jeanneau website. It is possible to visit the Jeanneau factory by appointment through the Jeanneau Dealer.

Ask us for more information! We were Jeanneau Dealers in the UK from 2003 to 2017.

JEANNEAU YACHT BOAT SHOW

The last UK Show

Southampton 2017 was our last Jeanneau Yachts Boat Show, with us being UK-based.  We moved to Barcelona, Spain with our business during the summer of 2017. We are confident it will not be our last Jeanneau Yachts Boat Show.

Jeanneau Yacht For The Mediterranean.

But for the time being, we must purchase Yachts through our old company Network Yacht Brokers Conwy, for our clients wishing to buy a yacht for the Mediterranean.

With Brexit complete, the UK is out of the European Market. It will take years for things to settle down, so rules and regulations about VAT and special trading conditions will remain sketchy. The problem is that even though VAT and registration rules are well documented for countries outside the EU, local enforcement rules will be interpreted differently.

Jeanneau History Development

Jeanneau's History is well documented on the internet; information found usually goes back over the 60-year history. This page will only briefly mention Henry Jeanneau and the distant past as we feel the recent history of Jeanneau is more relevant today.

Significant Changes in Yacht construction

Considerable changes in new boat production have occurred over the last 20 years, none more than with Jeanneau boat and yacht production. Significant changes came when Prisma moulding was introduced to the Jeanneau product between 2005 and 2010. Add to that the evolution of hull construction and a more cost-effective solution to interior woodwork, the results being that sailboats built in the 90s bear little resemblance to the craft we see today.

Prisma Moulding (Injection Moulding)

Hull shapes 20 years ago and before was built in the traditional way using uncomplicated lines. A straightforward design is necessary for an uncomplicated mould. A sailboat deck was constructed in two parts and then glued or even screwed together to form the Yacht. Many surfaces would not have a smooth finish and had to be hand-finished. The old hand-laid deck of a yacht would typically be 30% heavier than its Prisma moulded counterpart. The Jeanneau 39i was one of the first production boats to get a Prisma Moulded Deck. A quiet revolution that met some resistance.

Prisma Moulding excellent for the environment.

I remember going to an American shipbuilder's yard back in 2001. As we entered the building, the stench of fibreglass resin was almost overwhelming. The light-hearted advice from the guide was to keep walking until we were out of the workshop! I realised if I paused too long my shoes would become fixed to the floor! None of the workers used respirators. This excursion to the USA was not to a Jeanneau factory; however, all boat builders using a spray to apply fibreglass to resin suffered from vapour problems. Now, if you enter a workshop owned by Jeanneau (Group Beneteau), you cannot smell fibreglass. The air is clean, thanks to injection or Prisma moulding.

Prisma Moulding is stronger

As Prisma moulding developed, designers realised they were from traditional angles. Yacht designers can now experiment with deck shapes that have transformed how yachts look. Gone are the days when a locker door opens and a buyer can see rough fibreglass. All surfaces are smooth. It’s also a fact that a Prisma Moulded deck is lighter and stronger than its conventional counterpart.

Screws are no longer necessary

In early 2000, a hull was screwed to the deck of a yacht. Visible screws or bolts along the deck joint and around windows were a selling feature showing the integral strength of the Yacht. As Glue and resin developed, Jeanneau realised it could join a hull to a deck with only Glue. For some time in the mid-2000s, decks were both glued and screwed. The only reason for using screws in this interim period was that Jeanneau thought the market was not yet ready to accept an entirely bonded-together hull. Sicoflex sealer has become an essential tool in the shipwrights’ tool kit. A Glue called Sicoflex, similar to that used by boat manufacturers is used throughout the marine industry.

The end of teak veneer

A natural teak veneer was used in production until around 2006. The significant disadvantage to this is the global cost of teak and the difficulty of consistency. Minor imperfections in a wood pattern often plagued boat builders. Inconsistency in wood quality continued until an artificial wood finish wood became available. From then, the grain is manufactured to match. From this point, Yachts became a little less personal; however, on the upside, replacing a door or panel became just a matter of ordering a spare part as they were all the same.

The evolution of a brand

Over 60 years ago, it took Henry Jeanneau and a group of creative individuals to create a brand. At its conception, market conditions fell in favour of this company, then experienced, and judgment (with a bit of luck) have carried this great brand to where it is today. The brand might not have survived if Beneteau had not taken over Jeanneau some years ago. The fact is the brand did survive the ups and downs of 60 years regardless of ownership. This survival is a credit to all who work for the company and believe in the Jeanneau brand.

Beneteau & Jeanneau to Close U.S. Factory

Boy, that was a hard headline to write. But it is true. Groupe Beneteau announced that the company was in the process of putting their large boat building facility in Marion, SC into hibernation. The process will begin in September and will run through the end of November.  During that time all current orders for new boats normally built in Marion will be met. After that time and for the near future, new boat orders will be served by Beneteau and Jeanneau factories in France which build boats similar to the boats produced in Marion for the European and Asia-Pacific market. Groupe Beneteau remains the market leader in sailboat sails in the U.S. market and will continue to fill that role in the post Covid-19 era. After sales service for North America will continue to be handled from offices in the U.S.
The reason for the production reallocation from the U.S. to France is due to two fairly obvious forces affecting the sailboat market in the North America. First, sales of new sailboats in North America have been falling for the last decade. And, second, that trend has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. As we get through the pandemic and get our economy back in gear, Groupe Beneteau will continually reevaluate the viability of building their boats in Marion. In the meantime, the company continues to build their range of powerboats in the U.S. and will serve buyers of sailboats as they did 36 years ago prior to opening the Marion facility. The only difference for Beneteau and Jeanneau new boat buyers is their boats will make a transatlantic passage aboard a ship before arriving in the U.S.
