Salty Dingo wins at prestigious Mirabaud Yachting Image Awards

Image of  Hamilton Island Wild Oats  Wins International Yacht Racing Forum Award

Australian photographic and videography agency Salty Dingo has won the Yacht Racing Forum Award (‘The Delegates Award’) in the 2023 Mirabaud Yachting Image Awards .

The Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image Awards, open to professional yacht racing photographers from around the world, attracted entries from 144 photographers from 30 nations this year.

Salty Dingo Co-Founder Craig Greenhill’s image of supermaxi  Hamilton Island Wild   Oats  competing in the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race proved a winner for delegates attending World Sailing’s annual conference and marine trade show Metstrade in The Netherlands.

Accepting the award in Amsterdam, Craig explained the story behind the hauntingly beautiful image of  Hamilton Island   Wild Oats  ( Wild Oats XI ) surrounded by mist in the middle of the Tasman Sea.

“We’d been searching the ocean in a helicopter under a thick blanket of sea fog and it took three attempts to locate the yacht 40 nautical miles off the coast of Tasmania,” explained Craig.

“On the last attempt, we spotted a shape on the horizon – the yacht we were looking for. As we got closer, the sun broke through the fog, silhouetting supermaxi Hamilton Island Wild Oats, producing this magical moment.

The Mirabaud award adds a much-treasured sailing photography honour to Craig’s career highlights, including two Walkley awards for Excellence in Journalism, two Kennedy awards, three News Corporation Photographer of the Year awards and a PANPA award.

“The Mirabaud Awards recognise the extraordinary commitment and passion of sailing and marine photographers all around the world,” said Craig.

“These photographers put their bodies and their equipment on the line, often in the worst of conditions, to capture amazing images. I’m really proud to be part of this group of dedicated and talented professionals who love the world of sailing.”

The award also brought a childhood dream to life for Craig when, just before his photograph was announced as a winner, he met the man whose image was his inspiration to pursue a career in sailing photography.

“Michael Kurtz took a legendary photograph of Alan Bond with Australia II as it was being lifted out of the water to reveal the winged keel after winning the 1983 America’s Cup,” said Craig.

“That moment in history inspired my love for sailing and yachting photography – it was such an honour and a special connection to meet Michael at the Mirabaud Awards and to accept an award in his influential presence.”

Mark Richards, skipper of  Hamilton Island Wild Oats , sent congratulations.

“We are thrilled that Craig’s amazing work has been recognised with this award – not only is it a great shot with an epic back story, but it also captures the nature of the Sydney to Hobart, and just how lonely the battle to the finish line can be,” said Mark.

Craig would like to thank the delegates of METSTRADE 2023, especially The Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) led by CEO David Good.

The Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image photo competition today announced the members of its 2023 jury. The prize-giving ceremony will be organised in partnership with World Sailing and METSTRADE, the world’s largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems.

Ship captain who saw Mike Lynch’s yacht sink blames ‘extreme mast’

Mike Lynch

An eye witness to the sinking of British tech entrepreneur  Mike Lynch ‘s yacht on Monday attributed the tragedy to the extremely tall mast, which made the vessel more vulnerable to the violent storm that was lashing the area.

Dutch ship captain Karsten Börner, whose own boat was anchored near Lynch’s Bayesian , told the Financial Times that the superyacht appeared to have stability problems.

“The center of gravity is too high with this extreme mast,” he explained, while also dismissing the Italian coast guard’s initial view that the Bayesian was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I was on the same spot,” Börner added. “I have two masts and they are 28 and 29 meters above deck, she has one, 73 meters (239.5 feet) above deck.”

Authorities are looking into  possible reasons Lynch’s yacht quickly sank , when other boats nearby seemed to weather the same storm without issue.

The 56-meter long superyacht had been carrying 22 passengers and crew. Börner rescued 15 passengers and said they told him the ship sank in less than two minutes.

He also described the wind as “violent, very violent,” telling the FT that the wind speed likely reached hurricane strength as “tons of water” came down.

“I never saw that before, there was a water tornado,” he said.

The CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns the company that built the Bayesian , previously told the FT that it was designed to be stable with its tall mast and suggested the crew didn’t carry out proper safety measures.

But Börner said the crew told him they “closed the ship,” according to the FT .

The Italian Sea Group didn’t immediately respond to Fortune’s request for comment on Börner’s remarks and declined to comment to the FT .

Meanwhile, prosecutors in Italy have launched a probe into the shipwreck and multiple counts of culpable homicide, which are equivalent to manslaughter charges.

The Italian coast guard also confirmed Friday that it had recovered the body of Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. In addition to Lynch and his daughter, the other victims included  Morgan Stanley  International chair Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, American jewelry designer Neda Morvillo; and chef Recaldo Thomas.

On Saturday, Italian prosecutors told reporters that the emergency began at 4:38 a.m. local time , when a red flare was launched and seen by the coast guard, adding that the passengers were likely asleep at the time.

Deputy prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano told reporters that a crew member had been on duty, as required, when the “truly sudden” storm struck.

Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio   said ship-tracking data showed the yacht started to drift from anchor just before 4 a.m., then traveled about 360 meters over five minute to the spot where it eventually sank some 15 minutes after that.

Manslaughter Probe Launched After Bayesian Yacht Sinking Kills British Entrepreneur, Morgan Stanley Chief

Italian authorities have launched a manslaughter investigation into the captain of the luxury Bayesian sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last week in a wreck that killed seven people, including Britsh tech entrepreneur Michael Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, and Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer.

Italian Coast Guards take part in searches of missing off Porticello near Palermo, on Aug. 21, 2024.

Italian prosecutors will investigate James Cutfield, the captain of the Bayesian, for manslaughter after the ship sank in rough weather overnight on Aug. 18, multiple outlets reported Monday.

The investigation will look into if the crew of the ship appropriately handled the storm that hit the yacht before it capsized, if passengers were warned of imminent danger and if hatches on the ship were left ajar, which would have contributed to its quick sinking.

As part of the probe, the ship will be raised from the waters in which it sank later this year, CNN reported , at the cost of registered owner Angela Bacares, the wife and mother, respectively, of victims Michael and Hannah Lynch.

The Bayesian, named for a mathematical theory, is currently about 50 meters (164 feet) below the surface near the port of Porticello in Sicily, Italy, and sank less than a minute after it capsized.

Officials have said the passengers who died—Michael and Hannah Lynch, Jonathan and Judy Bloomer and Chris and Neda Morvillo—were likely asleep at the time of the sinking.

Notices of investigations into an incident must be issued in Italy before autopsies can be done on victims, Reuters reported , and the opening of a probe does not necessarily mean formal charges will follow.

Key Background

The Bayesian is a 184-foot luxury sailing yacht with a 246-foot aluminum mast—the tallest of its kind in the world. It is legally owned by Bacares and her late husband "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a staff member told The Times of London. The Lynch/Bacares family was on board with seven guests and the boat was anchored when a storm hit overnight on Sunday, Aug. 18. The harsh weather included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water, that caused the vessel to top over and it was then quickly dragged underwater. Of the 10 passengers, six died in the capsizing and their bodies were recovered last week. There were also 12 crew members on board and one, Recaldo Thomas, also died. Among those resued were Bacares; Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Lynch's Invoke Capital, along with her partner and her baby daughter; lawyer Ayla Ronald and her partner.

Lynch, Bloomer and Morvillo were all involved in a massive fraud trial that saw Hewlett-Packard accuse Lynch and others of artificially inflating the value of his software company, Autonomy, before HP purchased it in 2011. Lynch was indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale but was acquitted alongside his co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain, who was killed in a car crash in the U.K. the same weekend the Bayesian sank in Italy. Bloomer testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial, according to the Associated Press , and Morvillo was one of the lawyers on the case.

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

  • Share full article

The Bayesian sailing yacht

By Eve Sampson

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting.
