How to Build a Model Ship

Model ship building is an interesting hobby that many people enjoy. It can be a lot of fun to see your model ship come together as you build it. Most model ships are accurate representations of actual ships and even share some things in common with their construction processes. If you've never built a model ship before, don't worry. There are plenty of model kits that have all the pieces you'll need to build your own model ship.

Buying a Model Boat Kit

• Your local hobby shops will likely have model boat kits available to buy.
• Many on-line hobby shops can send a model boat kit to your home.
• There are many different model boat kit styles that you can buy. Many of these will have a differing levels of difficulty and challenge.
• If this is your first time building a model boat, try to select a simple model for beginners.
• Do some research on the type of boat you are building to help you get an idea of what it will look like when finished. [1] X Research source

• You will likely want a wood plane or sandpaper.
• Small pliers can help when assembling the model.
• You may find a complete ship model tool kit that will provide everything you need to get started.

• Each model boat will have its own instructions.
• Always consult your instruction manual every step.

Building the Body of a Model Ship

• Make sure all the parts are accounted for.
• Make sure none of the parts are damaged.
• Find your instructions manual and review it.
• You may need additional tools or materials. Check your instructions to see if you need to buy anything else before getting started.
• Slide the bulkhead frames into the keel. The keel will be the long piece of the frame, running the length of the boat. The bulkheads will slide into slots found on the keel. Bulkheads will help shape the planks of your boat when it's time to apply them.
• Once you're sure everything fits, you can glue the bulkhead frames into the keel.
• Make sure everything is level and flat on the top of the frame. If any bulkheads or areas of the keel are higher than others, use sandpaper to level them off.

• Place a plank over the bulkheads.
• If there is a space where the plank doesn't touch a bulkhead, sand the bulkheads down until the plank rests flatly against each bulkhead.
• Take your time and make sure each plank will lay flatly against the bulkheads.
• Make sure to test both sides of the bulkheads.
• If you sand one area down too much, you can add tiny slivers of wood later on to level off the plank.

• You will likely place the first plank at deck level.
• Planks run the length of the boat, from fore to aft.
• Each plank will be glued to the bulkheads that it is meant to touch.
• Check your model's instructions to learn where you should place your first plank.
• Add planks in pairs to ensure they are even and level with one another. Your first planks should mirror images of one another.
• Soaking planks in water can help them become more flexible.
• If there are any gaps, you can use wood filler or small pieces of wood to fill them in.
• Your model may have you add additional layers of planking. Follow your model's unique instructions when adding planks to ensure the best results.
• Additional layers of planking are often decorative.
• You may need to taper some planks to close up gaps.

• Your model boat's hull should look completely smooth after sanding it.
• Each plank will look like it was naturally blended or attached to the next.
• No one plank should stick out further than another.
• Double check your model before adding any finishing touches.
• You may need to use wood filler or small pieces of wood to make the deck piece lay level.
• Take a moment to sand down any rough areas that you might notice.
• Your model will likely have specific instructions for attaching the deck piece. Always check your instructions to make sure your model will be successfully completed.

Finishing the Model Boat

• Most wooden model boats will require some kind of wood stain and sealant to protect the wood.
• Some models can be decoratively painted to look like their real life counter parts.
• Matte or stain polyurethane finishes can be a great addition to your model boat.
• Figurehead.
• The boat's wheel.
• Quarterdeck.

• You can buy model boat displays at many hobby stores.
• You shouldn't have any leftover parts from your model. If you do, try to figure out where it was supposed to go and add it if possible.
• Be careful with your finished model boat as it will be fragile.

Easy RC Boat Plans

If you're new to model boat building from scratch or just want something easy, try this one. It shares a similar easy-to-build hull construction as the PT boat, but is actually even easier to build.

The boat measures 15 inches long finished and weigh just over a pound (about half a kilo). The size was kept small to facilitate printing onto relatively common paper size.

The plan is laid out with all templates on five 11x17 size sheets and the bulkheads and other templates on two 8 1/2 x 11. The plan can also be printed on ISO-sized paper (A3 & A4). Click the heading or image above for more information . This is a real bargain.

Model ship plan of the first Confederate ironclad AKA Merrimack (or sometimes incorrectly Merrimac). I spent many months researching the vessel and this plan is the result.

Here is a plan set for building the protected cruiser USS Olympia of Spanish-American War fame. This plan can be used for either bread-and-butter model boat construction or plank on bulkhead.

More About These Model Boat Plans

They fall into two categories:

CAD generated and computer lofted

The CAD generated plans are of exceptional quality, simply because they have never been printed, scanned or folded. These are the best print quality and accuracy I've ever seen in a set of model boat plans. The first time they are printed is when you take the files to your local print shop. To my knowledge, nobody else offers this service.

Scanned and electronically cleaned up

The down-side with CAD generated plans is that, for a one-man-show, it takes a long time to generate each one of them. I've concluded that it would benefit more people to simply offer scanned plans of these historic ships.

These plans are still excellent quality, and of high resolution. As the originals are over 100 years old, many hours have been spent cleaning them up to a my own high standard

All plans are in pdf format. If there are more than a single pdf-document in the download, it comes as a Zip-file. For those files you will need a zip/unzip program to access the plans. I use jZip because it's free and reliable.

Changing the scale when printing out is tricky with pdf files. I have therefore formatted each document for a single scale. Follow the link for more tips on printing pdf's further down on this page.

At one point I offered the CAD generated plans in several different scales, all individually. It drove me crazy trying to keep track of it all, and try and figure some sort of price structure. I gave up and decided to offer all different scales of the same subject in a single download. It has worked out well.

When you buy these model boat plans you receive a zip file containing multiple drawings at different scales. You get more flexibility in choice of scale, I get less files to track. A win-win.

I wish to thank you once again for the down-loads on two ships that I'd ordered. The down-loading was most easy to accomplish. I'm NOT a computer whiz so I was indeed happy to see the process was easy.

The super-size Kinko's printout was/is great to have not only for really good, clear details but for a very nice, nearly over-whelming print to stare at.

The print-outs from my own printer are equally useful for "carry around" purposes. I can grub up copy after copy as I carve out the hulls, paint, or cut out some detail that is needed. They are also very handy for note-taking as I progress on the models.

I must say the cost of your down-loads was most reasonable as well. Thank you on this especially since I am retired on a fixed income.

So, thank you for your product that met all my needs in this area. I've nothing at all to find fault with or complain to you about. I am completely happy with the images you provided.

Custom Half Hull Construction

Model is thoughtfully recreated from the real boat using photographs, line drawings, and pictures

Two methods of construction.

• We employ the latest technology in building modern yacht models to reflect these complex hull designs and cabin structures using AutoCAD drawings to actually print the hull into a high grade resin. With this technique we can scale the model exactly to the yacht. Each model is hand finished to include all the details of the actual yacht
• We are still an excellent builder of wood models and love to add bright work details to custom models of classic sail and power yachts. We build models to exacting standards demanded by the industry’s yacht builders and their customers.

There is a naval architect leading a staff of craftsmen from Europe and the Dominican Republic. Accurate deck and hull details are made with innovative materials that include custom brass, silver, and chrome castings Marine varnishes and polyurethane paint are used in the finishing process

Custom Model Gift Giving
