British paint giants Johnstone’s have a history dating back to 1890 and make some of the most trusted and best exterior wood varnish products available right now. We’re familiar with their amazing range of colours and finishes, so it made sense to test out their Woodcare Outdoor Yacht Varnish .

It’s another yacht varnish with excellent coverage per litre, even though it goes on quite thick. If you key each coat with wire wool or an exceptionally fine grit sandpaper once it’s dry, you’ll get as good a finish as possible. We got on well with this varnish, it cures to a smart finish that is hard and clear.

Paintmaster offer great savings to trade customers and savvy DIYers by cutting out the middleman when it comes to buying the best yacht varnish , available in tins up to a whopping 205 litres. You might not need that much to treat the woodwork around your home, even if the coverage isn’t quite as impressive as some of the others on the list.

This no-nonsense yacht varnish has a super-quick touch dry time of just an hour, and the solvent based formulation promises to expand and contract with the wood underneath it, to minimise cracking and bubbling. It goes on well with a brush and looks great once cured.

Originally based in London’s Shoreditch area in the heart of the furniture making industry, Rustins know a thing or two about making the best exterior varnish for wood. We knew we had to try out their yacht varnish , so we got hold of a tin and put it through its paces.

It’s developed to give a durable finish to exterior timbers, with added tung oil that dries to a high shine. We love the almost wet look you get from this product, it’s the best satin yacht varnish we’ve used so far.

With a strong tradition of boat building and high expectations from their protective coatings, you can count on Dutch specialist paint manufacturer Epifanes to create the best yacht varnish. And they’ve been doing so since 1902.

We really like their High Gloss Clear Varnish , it’s not the cheapest option but you certainly get what you pay for. Designed for use on boats, it uses a blend of tung oil and resins to build up an ultra-tough and glossy surface that will protect your wood surfaces for years, whatever the weather. It’s easily the best clear yacht varnish on this list.

British protective coatings brand Ronseal have made a name for themselves by producing products that do exactly what they say on the tin. This solvent-based weatherproofing varnish is the perfect solution for exterior timbers like windowsills that need the best outdoor varnish on them.

Ronseal’s Yacht Varnish promises the best coverage on the list, so when we tested it out, we were happy to agree that a little goes a long way. Once several coats had been applied to prepared timber, it cured to a handsome satin finish that looked great.

Customers at Screwfix gave No Nonsense Yacht Varnish Gloss Clear 750ml a review score of 4.7 out of 5, with a total of 240 reviews. Reviews are arguably the most important thing to look at when purchasing a product, and can be the most damaging or beneficial part of a brand. This is why it is in the company’s best interest to provide only quality products to ensure that no negative feedback is received. When checking, you should always go to the negative comments first. This is because the negative comments are actually the most honest on a review page. You see, some companies or affiliate sellers may have less than honest methods of gaining top reviews. These are done through “paid review services” that business’ can hire to provide glowing and organic looking reviews. Negative reviews are posted by disgruntled buyers who have genuinely been let down by a product, which makes them genuine in most cases.

When scouring negative reviews, take note of the complaint and see if it can be dismissed as a frustrated buyer who has misused the tool or something that is petty and easily dismissable. Less negative reviews posted, the better the product will be. That doesn’t mean that every positive review is fake, in fact, most of them will be real, but it’s never a good idea to rely on them solely.

Quality of No Nonsense Yacht Varnish Gloss Clear 750ml

Buying a high-quality tool is as important as checking the condition of your car brakes and the structural soundness of your house. Poor tools can lead to having to replace them soon after you buy them, or in the most extreme cases, causing injury to yourself or others because they didn’t have the durability needed for the specific job. It is easy for a beginner to think “a saw is a saw, right?”, but that really isn’t the case.

Cheaper brands, such as those you would find in high street bargain stores, will have been mass-produced with lower grade materials which allow the low price tag. Though that may sound good for your bank account, you will soon discover you have a tape measure that slices your fingers, screwdrivers that don’t fit in the cross slot of a screw and a hammer grip that is slipping from the handle.

Researching the quality of a tool you are looking to buy is absolutely paramount. This goes back to my previous point of checking those reviews, as well as finding forums discussing the brand and tool in question so that you get genuine, unfiltered feedback.

Having tools with excellent durability is extremely important. Not only will it mean you will not have to spend out on replacement tools when they break prematurely, but because tougher tools will do a better job. Sometimes cheaper ones can appear to work great until wear and damage suddenly make them unusable, and you are left unable to complete your task. This will lead to an extended work period as you will have to go out and buy a replacement. If you use that tool as part of your profession, it could mean the difference between hitting your deadline or not. No matter what kind of job you have or how you’re using the equipment, make sure your tools can stand up to the task in the first place.

Choosing where to buy Yacht Varnish

There is a long list of brands that excel in specific tools, but don’t do so well with others. One company that is fantastic across the board is Screwfix.

They offer free delivery over £50 orders, which can easily be met depending on your needs. As well as an easy and quick online delivery service, you can also choose to “click and collect” on the same day, which is perfect for spontaneous DIY projects or if you need to replace a tool very quickly.

Screwfix has an excellent reputation and is arguably the best brand for trade tools in the UK. This is down to them supplying only top-quality tools at extremely reasonable prices. It’s obvious that the team at Screwfix are passionate about what they do – having friendly and helpful staff that range from online assistants to instore staff. If you are unsure or need any advice on your DIY or trade job, they are more than happy to answer your questions.

As mentioned previously, not all brands stock all tools, which can be frustrating when trying to source everything you need in one place. Well, Screwfix’s impressive product range means that it is extremely likely they will stock what you are looking for. If you come home with the wrong tool or find that there is a problem with your purchase, their return process is straightforward and free!

Screwfix has well and truly stepped up to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, going out of their way to ensure they are abiding by the health advice given by the government. They have implemented strict social distancing rules as well as bolstering their online delivery and “click and collect” services to reduce foot traffic inside of their 682 stores.

I recommend you head over to their site and check out the amazing range they stock. Screwfix prides themselves of impeccable service and only sells trustworthy brands, so you can rest assured when dealing with them.

Our Guide to Buying Tools

There are a lot of tools on the market, and with every bargain highstreet store having their own tools section, it is very easy to be pursued into picking up an inferior product. In the worst-case scenario, the tool could break and badly injure you. These poorer quality tools are usually mass-produced and are not built with durability or longevity in mind. In today’s post, I want to go through all the different factors you should consider when filling your toolbox with trustworthy gear.

Where To Start?

Since early man picked up a rock to use as a hammer, humans have thrived because of the tools they have developed. Today, they are as popular as ever with uses that range from DIY to making a living with them. Everyone has to start somewhere when it comes to buying tools; with some lucky enough to have people in their lives that can give them recommendations and show them the ropes. I’m going to go over a few things beginners should think about when buying their own tools so that they can tackle those jobs around the house or even begin a trade.

First of all, many well-known brand names tend to boast about their flagship tools in television, trade magazines and online ads. They tend to make the harder jobs look extremely simple when using their specific brand. Of course, the basis of this is to help sell their product. So is this a realistic representation of what the tool can do for you, especially if you’re just starting out? The answer is no. Different skill levels and experience has a significant factor in the effectiveness of a tool, as well as other things.

I recommend any beginner should source their basic hand tools first, such as a hammer, hand saw, screwdriver, tape measure and spirit level. Once comfortable with handling the basics, you can then think about moving onto power tools that will make the job go more quickly.

Tools You Should Never Buy Cheaply

Cheap drill bit.

Cheap drill bits do not cut well when they are brand new and don’t cut cleanly either. It will make the job slower and more difficult. It can be challenging to identify if a cheap drill bit is doing a good job because they can work great on lighter materials. Once you go to use it on the heavier stuff, however, you will run into an array of issues that will frustrate you.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

When in control of a hand or power tool, it is your responsibility to do everything in your power to keep you and the environment safe. That means wearing visors, gloves, goggles with anti-fogging coatings, vented respirators, face masks made of premium cushion materials and ear muffs with soft ear cups.

You may have to pay more than the cheaper or disposable options on the market, but you will be thankful if a near miss or accident occurs and it was your PPE that reduced or avoided the injury.

Many bargain footwear suppliers offer work boots for a fantastic price. But these are often not steel toe capped, do not have anti-fatigue soles and won’t protect your feet against liquids or extreme heat. In fact, some boots that look the part may as well be a pair of sandals if a hammer or power tool was to drop on your foot.

Nowadays, top brands offer work boots in a whole array of colours and designs to give more options to the buyer, as well as doing a fantastic job at keeping your feet safe while you are working.

Cheap / Off brand Power Tools

Power tools can sell for a decent price, which has opened up the doors to cheap and fake tools coming onto the market to maximise profit. The issues we have with such tools are that they may not provide the power needed to complete the job given. Also, many of them are made with flimsy materials that could fall apart easily with the vibrations of usage. The best-case scenario is that the tool will stop working, but in the worst case, they can explode, burst into flame or shatter over the user.

Top Safety Tips For Hand And Power Tools:

  • Regularly inspect tools to make sure they are in good condition and fit for the job you are doing.
  • Make sure you maintain your tools by performing regular maintenance tasks like grinding or sharpening. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions while you’re doing this.
  • Wear clothing that fits well. Loose clothing or accessories can get caught in a tool’s moving parts, which could result in dire consequences.
  • Use the right tool for the job. For example, don’t use a wrench as a hammer.
  • Make sure that your feet are planted on a stable surface so that you can keep your balance.
  • Never carry tools up a ladder by hand. Instead, get someone else to use a bucket or bag to hoist the tools up to you.
  • When working at heights, never leave tools lying out in the areas where they could present a hazard to the people below.
  • Never carry pointed tools in your pocket, especially in back pockets. Always use your toolbox!
  • Keep floors dry and clean to avoid slipping while working with or around dangerous tools.
  • Never carry a power tool by its cord, especially if it is connected to the mains.
  • Do not use electric tools in wet conditions unless they are approved for that use. If you must work in wet conditions, always ensure you have good balance and are unlikely to slip.
  • When you are finished using a compression tool like a nail gun, make sure that the pressure is released before you break the hose connections.
  • Finally, never leave your tool unattended, especially if there are children and animals in the house.

Smell from trade yacht varnish (no nonsense)

http://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsen...ml/23164#product_additional_details_container I have been using this stuff for outdoor furniture etc and it seems great. I added about 10% - 20% white spirit to the varnish to prime bare wood before adding at least one more coat. I got so used to using the stuff that I used it on a wooden bed that I built for my kids bedroom without thinking. It's been on for well over a week (most of which was in an unheated space) and it's still pretty stinky. With hindsight I should have used a water based interior varnish. I'd welcome any thoughts on the following? - is the smell toxic? It says high VOC on the tin. I've read the COSHH datasheet but couldn't make much sense of it! - will it cure completely and stop smelling or will it always smell - in terms of fixing this, I'll need to either sand it all off, or overcoat it with a suitable interior varnish. Will I need to do any special prep (beyond a light sanding) to overcoat with an interior varnish Any advice appreciated, thanks

The smell will eventually subside, the time of year isn't the best for varnish as it cures best when there is less humidity in the air. Probably what you have found when working outdoors on garden furniture. Being in an unheated room isn't helping. Increasing the heat will help the varnish cure - although the smell will increase in the short term. Sanding any varnish is a real pain, soft varnish is even worse as all the sanding sheets will clog really quickly. Best to leave it cure by itself

Once they are warmly tucked up in bed, crack open a window and keep their door open too. How old are the kids?
Thanks both yes we have been opening the windows and the smell does seem to be reducing a bit! I don't think sanding the varnish off would be too tricky as I put it on quite sparingly and I have a belt sander Overcoating would definitely be easier though if that would work. I'm going to remove the bed again at the weekend to do something with - it's just a question of whether I 1) try to sand it off 2) overcoat it or 3) go buy some new timber and start again!
Oh sorry and kids are 4 and 6
If you overcoat it with water-based before the oil is 100% cured, then I think you'll run the risk of crazing. There are some great primer/sealers out there like Zinsser BIN, but I doubt that'll cope with varnish that is still effectively giving off volatiles and is shrinking. Surely the worst of it has gorn, so it's chust a case of waiting it out a bit longer?

Strip the bed linen and mattress from the beds and let them have a good air flow all over and around them.

Ouch!
Mmm ok thanks sounds like I'd better get it out of their room sooner rather than later! I read the COSHH label once I'd realised my mistake but it read to me as though they were all the hazards during application and I thought once cured it would be ok. I couldn't smell it at all after about a week in the basement where I treated it but in the confines of a bedroom it smells a bit more. I'll get it out ASAP Cheers

Quick update... Once I'd shared the news from bazza's comment with the Mrs I really was under the COSHH ;-) So sleeping kids moved into our room (sofabed for us tonight), and bed's already been disassembled and returned to the basement! I'm not convinced that the smell is ever going to fully go away so I've just bought a 2nd hand futon base and will knock that into an UNVARNISHED replacement bed base at the weekend! Thanks for all the comments...
Probably strip off well using a hot air gun. Used SADOLIN Polyurethane Varnish on a staircase and 6 chairs recently, waterbased quick drying superb tough finish.

How much varnish do I need?

Measure your area precisely, drop the numbers into this smart calculator and it will tell you straight away how many litres you'll need to complete your project.

Exterior wood

Up to 8m2 per litre

Warm, dry day

How to use Yacht Varnish

Sand the wood using 120 grit paper. Wear a mask to avoid inhaling any dust. Wipe away dust with white spirit and leave to dry. Don't use in temperatures lower than 10°C. Stir well before use and test on a small area to check you are happy with the finish.

Use a brush and apply 3 thin coats in the direction of the grain. Leave 8 hours between each coat and lightly sand using 240 grit paper before the final coat.

Remove any varnish from your brush and wash with white spirit. Don't put any left over varnish down the drain or into watercourses. Your local authority may have facilities to get rid of unused varnish.

Can anybody pass on their experience of actually using this varnish and the quality and durability of finish?

MM5AHO

I used it one year. It was easy to use, flowed nicely gave a good finish, but barely lasted a season in the harsh Scottish sun. That's when I changed to LeTonkinois which I've used ever since. Fantastic stuff, lasting 3 years in some applications outdoors.

burgundyben

Its cheap! I used it, but only in some places that spend most time under cover or inside the cabin. Seems to last ok. Of outdoor stuff like gunnels etc, defo not suitable.

Active member

It used to be ok then they messed up with the formulation and it took ages to harden and even then felt sticky. I now use FLAG Yacht varnish - cheap but works well.

I've used Ronsons yacht varnish which is easy to apply and seems to resist UV pretty well. (I've also used Flag paint and AF both of which were cheap and effective)

Ronson do an 'outdoor varnish', which I've just used for some things which will get some sun. Seems OK to use, little bit on the murky side in the tin , but looks fine on the wood. Got it at BeanQueue in a '3rd one free' deal.

JumbleDuck

I have had good results with "Coo-Var Yacht and Seaplane Varnish" which I buy from my local builders' merchant. I wonder when anyone last used it to varnish a seaplane, though.

I seem to recall International Yacht Varnish had, at one time, on the tin, in small print, "Not suitable for marine use". !

Is the Screwfix varnish water based? I is getting increasingly difficult to find any coating that isn't.

I speak as I find, and after being in the yacht/boat building industry for nigh on 40 years I've tried just about everything going, and in most cases you do get what you pay for. The varnish I always came back to using was Blackfriars. Its not the cheapest, but I can honestly say its a quality product, and their Super Yacht Varnish if applied on a dry well prepared substrate, will stand up to the elements admirably..

Product Type

Johnstone's Trade Woodworks Heavy Duty Yacht Varnish has been specially formulated for use on all exterior smooth-planed timber, doors and window frames. It provides a flexible varnish film that flexes with the timber surface whilst protecting the wood. Heavy Duty Yacht Varnish protects against cracking and peeling and ensures all-weather UV protection. To ensure maximum protection on new, bare, and untreated wood, first apply a suitable all-purpose wood preserver. Dry after 16-24 hours under normal drying conditions, with light sanding down recommended between coats, we suggest at least 2 coats for full protection.

Applying Johnstone's Trade Woodworks Heavy Duty Yacht Varnish

For best results apply 2 or more coats along the wood grain using a brush, paying special attention to the end grains. Brand new wood can be first coated with a thinned coat followed by 2 full coats. Thin with up to 20% white spirit.

Remember: It's probably better to have a bit too much than to order too little!

Make sure you always check the coverage on the product page before purchasing and, if covering a dark or bright colour, you may need two or three coats.
