Superyacht Tatoosh

When the words “famous explorer yacht” are strung together, Tatoosh is one name that comes to mind among yacht-watchers. The 303-foot expedition vessel, built by Nobiskrug in 2000, gained recognition thanks to its high-profile owners—American telecom executive Craig McCaw and Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen. Behind the big names, this gigayacht is more noteworthy for its capacity for adventure.

“ Tatoosh is more than a pretty yacht; she’s designed to venture around the world,” Capt. Laurent Delleur, who has been with the yacht since 2007, told Robb Report .

A roster of international designers had a hand in Tatoosh ’s design evolution, including German designer Claus Kusch for the distinctive exterior and British designer Terence Disdale on the original interior.

Following Allen’s death in 2018, the current owner bought Tatoosh in 2022 and embarked on a significant refit, which included an interior refresh, full upgrade of the AV/IT systems, and changes to the outdoor spaces. He also put it into Fraser Yachts charter fleet.

Beyond the tech,  Tatoosh is one of the quietest yachts afloat thanks to twin DEUTZ-MWM 2,500 hp diesel engines with Visco Masse rubber mounts. The yacht has an impressive 7,000-nautical mile range when cruising at speeds of 12.5 knots. Its top speed is 16 knots.

Here are eight cool facts you didn’t know about one of the world’s most recognizable yachts.

The Boat Deck With Its Custom Tenders

owner of tatoosh yacht

As one of the original explorer yachts, toys feature big aboard Tatoosh . The dedicated “boat deck” has Davits worked into the exterior lines to hold a Germán Frers–designed 42-foot daysailer called Julia  and a 42-foot classic Hinckley Talaria tender called Chase . “The main tenders don’t sit in garages like modern yachts, but on deck, as part of Tatoosh ’s signature,” says Delleur. “The sailing boat was custom made from carbon fiber and was unique with her canting keel. The yacht used to also accommodate two Hobie catamarans on the boat deck.”

The Pool Transitions to a Dance Floor

owner of tatoosh yacht

It takes nearly 10,600 gallons of water to fill the 200-square-foot heated swimming pool on the main deck aft. A variable current allows guests to swim long distances. Come evening, the pool floor raises flush to the deck, transforming into a dance floor.

The Extended Beach Club

owner of tatoosh yacht

Tatoosh boasts a whopping 3,229 gross tonnes of internal volume. Exterior designer Disdale pushed the yacht’s dimensions from the 292-foot length that was originally planned to its final 303 feet, mostly to make more room for the on-deck pool and beach club. It proved to be a good idea, paving the way for a dedicated dive lobby, a hot tub, a sauna, and a bar with sea views.

World Traveler

owner of tatoosh yacht

Tatoosh has a track record of global cruising, sometimes sailing up to 35,000 nautical miles a year. The ambitious cruising program has taken it into far-off lands, including Fernando de Noronha in Brazil, Namibia, and Zanzibar. The most remote location to date is a group of far-flung islands in the Indian Ocean, which Tatoosh visited during the 2000s. The yacht spent several weeks in the region, taking in Europa, Les Glorieuses, and the Aldabra Atoll, which rarely feature on even the most adventurous itinerary, as well as Madagascar, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

The Piano Lounge

owner of tatoosh yacht

Tatoosh’s interior can be closed off to create a twin-level private owner’s apartment that occupies the forward section of the yacht across two decks: The self-contained area includes the primary bedroom, owner’s office, gym, observation lounge with private galley, massage room, piano lounge (pictured) and two guest cabins. From the observation lounge, for example, views of Mt. Etna and Mt. Stromboli erupting by night have been enjoyed in privacy.

Two Helipads, Two Choppers For Exploration

owner of tatoosh yacht

The yacht’s two heli-decks are a signature feature of Tatoosh ’s distinctive exterior, with the capacity to land a twin-turbine Airbus A145. They’ve largely been used for remote exploration in places like Africa. One of the helipads has a dedicated helicopter spares store, a helicopter refueling station, and an approved fire station—allowing the yacht to be used like a small heliport. The dual helicopter operations mean multiple groups of guests can be welcomed by air and flown ashore. Another use when the choppers are away: Candlelit dinners on the main helipad.

What’s in a Name

owner of tatoosh yacht

Tatoosh is named after the island near Paul Allen’s hometown of Seattle, but the 11 guest cabins are christened after some of the Pacific islands the yacht has frequently visited, including Lahaina in Hawaii and Maupiti and Bora Bora in French Polynesia.

Two Cinemas and Recording Studio

owner of tatoosh yacht

Tatoosh’ s previous owners kitted the yacht out with impressive onboard technology, including a state-of-the-art recording studio and two cinemas—one indoor, one outdoor. Even so, that technology was no match for Allen’s impressive onboard art collection. Under his stewardship, Tatoosh displayed original pieces, including a Van Gogh. Allen’s complete art anthology fetched $1.5 billion at auction in 2022.

Inside Paul Allen’s Former Yacht on Sale for $90 Million

owner of tatoosh yacht

The estate of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is offering the sale of his 303-foot-long superyacht , Tatoosh , for a cool $90 million, according to Dirt . If you’re thinking those stats aren’t impressive enough for the billionaire and tech magnate , well, you’d be right. Tatoosh , which is currently the 60th largest yacht worldwide, was just Allen’s secondary vessel. His main yacht, Octopus , sold last year for $325 million and stretches 414 feet long, making it the 20th largest yacht in the world.

As for Tatoosh , the recently-listed vessel was custom-built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000 for fellow American tech mogul Craig McCaw before being bought by Allen the following year for an estimated $100 million. The craft was put up for sale shortly after Allen’s death in 2018, but was taken off the market for an extensive refitting that was completed last year.

The owner’s quarters include a private deck, two dressing rooms, and an observation lounge with a private galley, all spanning across two of the ship’s five decks, which are all accessible via elevator.

To maintain and staff the superyacht, which will be one of the largest yachts on display during the Monaco Yacht Show later this month, potential new owners will have to be prepared to pay $9 to $10 million per year in addition to the hefty price tag. Tatoosh is being represented by the Monaco-based yachting company Fraser.

According to the listing by Fraser Yachts, the "instantly recognizable" Tatoosh can sleep 19 passengers, and has space for 31 crew. It was custom-built by Nobiskrug for the American cellphone mogul Craig McCaw, who sold the boat to Allen in 2001.

"Tatoosh should feel gracious like a home and also cozy," McCaw told Boat International on September 8, about the process of designing the yacht.

The yacht has 10 individual staterooms, but McCaw also wanted to ensure that his family had their own private space while aboard, so decided to section off a separate owner's cabin, he told Boat International.

The apartment has two ensuite bedrooms, a lounge, its own pantry, a galley, and gym among other things, per Boat International.

"After two weeks, the crew and the owner need a little space from each other, so I wanted a galley where I could make some dinner," McCaw said.

However, the boat still has plenty of areas for socializing with guests, including a heated swimming pool on the main deck, as well as its own 'beach club' area, per the listing.

TATOOSH - the view from the bridge

Published 12 September 2022

For the inside track on the largest new yacht to join the Burgess sales fleet, we spoke to Captain Richard Hielckert of the 92.4m TATOOSH during her refit in Germany.

TATOOSH Captain

Richard Hielckert has been one of the rotational captains on board TATOOSH for the past six years. We spoke to him as he joined the yacht in Germany where she is undergoing an extensive refit and her 20 year class survey. TATOOSH is available for purchase with Burgess asking EUR 90,000,000.

What was your path into yachting?

I captained cruise ships for 15 years. My first son was born and he sailed with us for the first two and a half years. When my second son was born I stopped cruise ships and tried to work from home but soon figured out that I need to work in a team environment. Out of the blue an ex colleague I hadn't seen for seven years called to say 'I'm in the area, can I come for a beer?' He worked in yachts and said 'If you ever feel like going back to sea again, let me know.' So yachting it became. I previously worked with Burgess actually, back in 2013-14. I worked with Alan Dale on the 70.1m Lurssen SAINT NICOLAS.

5x4m contra flow pool

Which areas of the yacht are most popular with guests?

It really depends on the charter guests, so from cabin spaces, pool areas, the observation lounge with great views and a flip-down TV, the range of options inside and out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We have done outside set-ups where the helipad was utilised as a sunbathing area and the swim platform with the dive area and jacuzzi behind it are always popular. The boat deck is a fantastic area to just relax either inside in the lounge or outside on deck, read some books or play music. The main deck aft lounge is always a great place to receive guests with welcome drinks and make them feel at home instantly.

Where has TATOOSH cruised in the past?

In my time it's mostly been the  Caribbean and  Mediterranean but we did visit Fernando de Noronha, a really special island off the Brazilian coast, not many people have been there. Then we went to Namibia and South Africa before heading back to the Caribbean.

Looking at the cruise folder, she's been all over the world. She's toured Africa, the Middle East, Indian Ocean, Far East, South East Asia, the Atlantic islands, the east and west coasts of the Americas. We were preparing a trip up the Amazon but unfortunately that never happened.

Beach club with jacuzzi

How capable is TATOOSH?

The way she is built, TATOOSH is capable of anything. We've sat at anchor in 60-plus knots of wind with no problems, she is a very seaworthy yacht, very stable. Everything is solidly built, German built. Everything is over spec instead of under spec and from my point of view that's a very comforting thing to know.

TATOOSH

What else makes TATOOSH stand out in your opinion?

She is completely unique, a beautiful yacht, absolutely one of a kind. To me, if you don't recognise TATOOSH from a distance, you probably don't know yachting. She's absolutely timeless. There's still no other yacht out there like her.

The whole dive set up is particularly spacious compared to other yachts. Having a 12.4m sailing yacht, Julia, hanging on the side is a big part of what makes her distinctive. Julia's being serviced too and even today she is still a top of the range sail racing yacht. The other tender is a 12m Hinckley and whenever we are in Miami where Hinckley is big, people come out in their own Hinckleys to talk to us.

It's also the welcoming feel inside, she's a relaxing yacht. It sounds an odd thing to say about a 92.4m yacht but she feels cosy, very special, more like a huge house than the marble and gold you see on a lot of other yachts.

Cinema

Who will buy her?

She will suit anyone. If you just want to chill and relax, that can be done. If you're adventurous and you want to travel the world and go diving, that can be done, surfing, kiting - all the watersports. Cinema, gym, beach club jacuzzi and spa, she has it all. Whatever you want to do, it can all be done with TATOOSH.

The whole owner's area can be segregated from the other guests, if so wished. There's an office in the owner's cabin and another on the deck above both with cabins for a PA or staff. She caters for whatever set up you would like, it can be very private or fully open. We held a lot of parties over the years, which most people will know about, so it can all be opened up but you still have separate spaces so you can have it noisy or quiet, you can enjoy a party the way you want to. Operationally she has service pantries all the way through the yacht and that works really well too.

For me it has been an absolute pleasure being captain here and sailing on TATOOSH and I hope to carry on. After a major refit and her 20 year survey, she has many years of fun and adventures ahead of her. All she needs is a new owner.

Please describe the yacht in five words.

Legendary, solid, exploratory, unique, welcoming.

With sea trials scheduled for March, TATOOSH could be yours for a spectacular summer of cruising anywhere in the world. Contact your Burgess broker to arrange an inspection, either virtually or in person, and you can fully appreciate the space, quality and pure spirit of this remarkable yacht.

Iconic 92m Nobiskrug Tatoosh rejoins the charter fleet

The 92.4-metre superyacht, Tatoosh has returned to the charter fleet with Fraser as central agency for charter. Still considered one of the most iconic vessels on the water more than 20 years after delivery, Tatoosh rejoins the charter market following an extensive 2021 refit and with a long list of amenities which includes a cinema, sauna and owner’s apartment among much else.

Delivered in 2000 by Nobiskrug , Tatoosh was originally commissioned to be a home away from home and one that could stick to an ambitious cruising programme, while offering a perfect environment for a family-orientated lifestyle. With this in mind, the yacht’s functionality is deeply ingrained in the design, resulting in an arrangement that would work for the owner’s young family and extensive time at sea.

Terence Disdale was soon brought into the project and tasked with creating a practical arrangement that would make the most of the vessel’s 3,229GT of internal volume. The result was a two-deck owner's apartment with access to an observation lounge and secluded lounge area, with total accommodation for 12 on board, across a staggering 11 cabins. There is complement for a crew of 31.

The styling itself – also the work of Disdale – was a painstaking and meticulous feat, with everything down to the last socket carefully considered. The result is rich, refined and welcoming rather than intimidating, an element that was hugely important for the original owner, and one that has carried through to create the ultimate charter vessel.

On board, there is a fine balance of texture throughout with intricate rattan work, Chippendale armchairs, elegant Georgian occasional tables, and lattice-fronted wardrobes. Her neutral colour palette also calls on the welcoming theme, along with natural wood grains and chenille fabric.

Alongside her elegant interior and vast deck space, the toy-box is another major point in the Tatoosh philosophy. An entire deck – christened “the boat deck” – lends itself to the theme and has davits worked into the exterior lines. Jet skis and paddleboards are also hidden on board for more fun on the water.

The main helipad is high up aft on the bridge deck and there is also an additional touch-and-go helipad on the deck above. The yacht also benefits from a heated contraflow swimming pool on the main deck which can be drained and raised to lie flush with the deck.

Tatoosh’s dive centre, located around the beach club, is also up there with the best, and features an industrial model Bauer compressor and a fill station that can refill four tanks simultaneously; there’s also a nitrox refilling station for deeper dives. The yacht’s ability to travel to the far reaches of the earth makes her a sublime choice for keen divers, and her rock-like stability also means that Tatoosh is quite comfortable taking divers off the beaten track.

Proof of this can be seen in her extensive cruising history with Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, the Far East and South East Asia all under her belt.

Now under Fraser management , Tatoosh is currently undergoing upgrades which will enable her to offer the ultimate charter experience.

While Knicks owner James Dolan looks out for his own interests, the rest of the NBA carries on

James Dolan is riding the gravy train.

The billionaire inherited his fortune, which includes the New York Knicks, Madison Square Garden and MSG Network, from his father, Charles Dolan, one of the world's wealthiest people. James Dolan controls the NBA's highest-valued franchise in the league's largest media market because he was born into both.

Dolan reportedly wanted more at the rest of the NBA's expense. Except, the 69-year-old was this week's lone dissenting vote against both the league's proposed budget this season and its newly re-elected chairman of the board of governors, Toronto 's Larry Tanenbaum, sources told Yahoo Sports.

In 2023, when the Knicks paid $20.9 million into the league's revenue-sharing plan, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski , Forbes valued the organization at $6.6 billion. The Knicks collected $504 million in revenue and $169 million in operating income last year, the publication said . MSG Network, which broadcasts the Knicks, earned a record $887 million in revenue last year, profiting $89.9 million, according to Sportico .

Dolan has reportedly sent three contentious memos to the board of governors in the last year — the first to resign from its financial and media advisory committees, a second to voice his displeasure with the NBA's new media rights deal (and the league office's share of it) and a third to reiterate those objections.

He wrote in July, "Pride of ownership is what is sacrificed. We are well on our way to becoming a one size fits all, characterless organization. Just remember we did this on the backs of owners like Jerry Buss."

Pride of ownership, he said. Rich coming from a team owner who has castigated fans and former players alike. Or one who has been a subject of multiple sexual misconduct lawsuits . And it is notable that Lakers governor Jeanie Buss, Jerry's daughter, has long been a supporter of the league's revenue-sharing plan.

“Any business operator wants to keep their revenue,” she told Sports Business Journal . “That’s the nature of the business, but we also understand the bigger picture and we want a league with teams that are economically viable so that every team has the opportunity to compete. It makes for a healthier league.”

Dolan appears mainly upset that the league's new media package, which will pay his Knicks more than $1 billion over its life, lowers his profit from local broadcasts. Per Sports Business Journal , the Knicks earn roughly $3 million a game on MSG Network and will lose a handful of games per year to national TV.

Again: The NBA's $75 billion media deal will pay the Knicks more than $100 million a year through 2036.

Dolan also claimed in his July memo that the league office's share of media rights would increase from $15 million for the 2024-25 season to $358 million in 2025-26. The initial figure is incorrect, according to Sports Business Journal . The league office's actual number for the 2024-25 season is reportedly $113 million, not $15 million, and the $358 million reflects a threefold increase in the media rights package.

Regardless, it is not as though folks at the league office are lining their pockets with Dolan's cash. Those funds, approved by the board of governors, are reinvested to grow the game globally — for more money.

The Knicks have profited more than $1 billion over the past seven seasons and could sell tomorrow for more than $6 billion. "Losing" a handful of local broadcasts per year means one less yacht in the shipyard, if that, since those earnings are not lost but incorporated into a more evenly split national rights deal.

And that is what it appears Dolan is really mad about. He should make more, because his team happens to play in New York. In theory, this should give his Knicks an advantage, so long as he reinvested those earnings into his roster. Think Major League Baseball, where the New York Yankees' payroll is 4-5 times that of smaller markets. In reality, Dolan has not paid the NBA's luxury tax in a decade and collected an annual payout from teams that did. The Knicks reportedly received $11.9 million last season as a result.

No word on whether Dolan declined any of his luxury tax income.

The difference between actively not paying for a competitive team and passively existing in a big city should not be lost on anyone. Revenue sharing is a simple concept. Large-market teams, left to their own devices, would profit immensely from larger local audiences as small-market teams suffered — or even folded — from smaller ones. If the NBA did not collapse, it would become so competitively imbalanced that collective viewership would decline, and the league's next media rights package would follow suit.

Plain and simple: Revenue sharing is designed to create parity around the league, therefore increasing interest across all 30 teams, not for just a handful. It is for the health of the sport — for you, the fan.

Not for James Dolan.

"The NBA has made the move to an NFL model — deemphasizing and depowering the local market," Dolan wrote in a July memo to commissioner Adam Silver and the NBA's 29 other governors, per ESPN . "Soon, your only revenue concern will be the sale of tickets and what color next year's jersey will be. Don't worry, because due to revenue pooling, you are guaranteed to be neither a success nor a failure.

  • Parity works for the NFL, will it work for Adam Silver’s NBA?

"Of course, to get there, the league must take down the successful franchises and redistribute to the less successful," added Dolan. "This new media deal goes a long way to accomplishing that goal."

All of that is weird. Why would moving to an NFL model be so bad? It is only the most successful sports league in the world. And Dolan has been guaranteed financial success, not failure, despite fielding one of the league's least successful teams. For all their advantages, the Knicks have not a won a championship in more than 50 years, and they have failed to make the playoffs in 16 of Dolan's 25 seasons at the helm.

And why would the NBA orient its business around a model that Dolan conceded is not working? He reportedly noted in that same July memo a 45% decline in MSG's viewership, largely due to cord-cutting. The league is shopping some local broadcasts to a digital partner, according to Sports Business Journal, though Dolan reportedly insisted teams are "without a comparable replacement offered by the league."

Only recently have the Knicks revitalized the franchise, making back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 2013, so they will pay the luxury tax for the first time since 2014. Maybe this is why Dolan is expressing concern about slightly lower nine-figure profits, even if the league is better for it. He might have to sacrifice a mansion he never visits so less fortunate franchises can afford to remain relevant.

In the end, Dolan's opposition was met with silence. Though he wrote in July, "We trust that our concerns are shared by many of our counterparts across the league," his dissenting votes stood alone. The rest of the NBA continues apace, operating in its best interest, and James Dolan will get back on his gravy train.
