Review of Pandora 22 International

Pandora 22 International

Basic specs.

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat is equipped with 2 cabins and a galley.

The Pandora 22 International is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.99 - 1.09 meter (3.25 - 3.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

An outboard motor is often used on this boat. In that case Pandora 22 International will typically require a power of 3 - 4 hp, alternatively 63 - 75 lbs thrust if you prefer an electrical motor. Electric outboards are becoming popular for sailboat owners who want clean instant power with less noise and no exhaust fumes.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Pandora 22 International is 1.89, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Pandora 22 International is about 80 kg/cm, alternatively 452 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 80 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 452 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 13m 2 (139 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Althought the hulls are mostly the same, the International has a deeper, higher aspect ratio fin keel than the PANDORA MKI, a taller mast and shorter boom following the IOR fashion of the time. Draft: Twin keel - 3’/.92m Keel/CB BU - 2’/.65m BD - 4.5’/1.37m

Pandora Yacht

Pandora Yacht

The Pandora was designed by the renowned yacht designer E. G. Van de Stadt and can be traced back to 1962 when Van de Stadt devised the “Randmeer”, a dayboat with a low freeboard. The Randmeer is still raced today in the Netherlands with a very active class association.

Later developments of the Randmeer included adding a deck with a cabin thereby converting the boat into a cruiser, which was then renamed “Trotter”. The Trotter was handicapped with its low freeboard, so Van de Stadt designed a new faster hull with higher freeboard but still using the Trotter deck. The new boat was called a “Trotter-Pandora” and was very popular and successful on the Continent, with about 200 boats being sold. In addition the boat was also licenced to be produced in the USA, Australia and Japan.

In 1967 Grimsby Plastics, who built no more than 20 boats, introduced the Trotter-Pandora to England. Rydgeway Marine Ltd. of Lowestoft Suffolk then succeeded them in 1970 by acquiring the moulds and marketed the same boat but under a new name “Pandora”. This Pandora became known as the “Mark 1”.

In 1971 Ridgeway made two very minor modifications to the original Trotter deck. However, it was not until circa 1973 that a major redesign/modernisation was undertaken, with the introduction of the “International”.

The International had a deeper, higher aspect ratio fin keel and the rig was modified. This consisted of a higher mast and a shorter boom. In 1976 the last modernisation was undertaken with the introduction of the “700”. The 700 had now stretched to 7.01 metres (hence its name) with the introduction of a retousse stern and associated inboard rudder and an even taller mast and shorter boom. Production of the 700 ceased in October 1991.

Since the demise of Rydgeway Marine, no further Pandoras have been built and the total number of yachts produced is estimated to be in the region of between 850 to 900 (including the 200 Continental Trotter-Pandoras). Van de Stadt’s later developments of this design include the Splinter – built by SOS – and the Spirit 24.

Despite its relatively small size, it’s an extremely sea worthy boat whose ability matches many larger craft, particularly the fin keeled versions. The boat is noted for being responsive and light on the helm.

There are two versions of the Pandora, the MK1 and MKII and both models feature a choice of keel – fin, ballasted twin, twin with central ballasted keel or a centreboard which retracts into a stub keel.

The interior is an open plan design comprising four berths plus a GRP moulded galley unit comprising a sink and gimballed cooker. Headroom is generous at around 4′ 8″. The cockpit is over 7′ long accommodating three crew with ease.

The Pandora association is based in Abersoch, Wales and actively races Pandora yachts.

I have just bought a boat that had no title or hull number and it was hearsay that it was a “Trotter”. This boat does appear to be a “Trotter-Pandora”. If there is a hull number on these boats and anyone out there knows where a person can find it I would sure appreciate it. I am looking forward to a great time with it after reading its history. Thanks. I bought a new Trotter (drop-keel) in 1964 or thereabouts, and named her “Boomalakka”. The Trotter was later redeveloped as a Pandora, but the original one had a 3/4 forestay, the Pandora I think masthead. The boat sailed beautifully, but had a low aspect ratio main that looked odd by today’s standards. What a fantastic choice of picture to choose to show a Pandora at its best – it’s my boat ‘Panic’ an International racing in the Pandora Welsh Open. There is a fleet of Pandora’s regularly racing out of South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club at Abersoch, N. Wales. See the SCYC web site or the pandora web site above for more details.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS; A LOCK FOR PANDORA

The Soviet leader, Yuri Andropov, has been pushing arms control lately. There are some encouraging signs. The American public needs to watch closely to be sure opportunities are not missed.

A chance, probably the last one, now appears to prevent a race for weapons in space. The Russians are going to submit a draft treaty to the United Nations to ''eliminate'' satellite killers, in Mr. Andropov's words. This is a very important proposal, providing Moscow doesn't deny, as Mr. Andropov seemed to do, that it already has a tested antisatellite system.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is preparing a proposal on ASAT's, as they are called. Informed scientists say that the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency has completed an offer that would limit each side to one low-orbit system. This is a reprise of the approach to the 1972 antiballistic missile treaty. The Russians had already deployed their rockets, so the agreement was to limit each side to one set. In the end, the U.S. renounced even that because it wasn't worth the cost. The arms control agency suggests two parallel negotiations on ASAT's. One would be for a general pact among all countries with space assets or ambitions pledging not to interfere with each other's satellites. The other would be for Soviet-American talks. Only the Russians have already launched satellite killers, against their own devices in orbit. But the U.S. is set to test its system, widely considered superior, within a few weeks. It would be much better to delay the test until the White House has decided on negotiations. The best way to stop the armed space race is to try to stop it. The current idea is to go ahead with U.S. tests, and seek an agreement that would allow Moscow to work out a single improved ASAT system. At the moment however, the real battle is coming in Washington. The arms-control agency's plan is to be submitted to an interagency panel headed by the White House national security adviser, William Clark. Then the Pentagon, which currently opposes the whole effort at space control, will have a shot at it. The Air Force's new Space Command is straining at the launch pad to get weapons far above the wild blue yonder. The Navy has a crucial interest in guaranteeing satellites safety from attack. Its nuclear submarines are largely dependent on them for navigation and communications. So far, it hasn't weighed effectively against the space warriors.

This is shortsighted. Currently planned ASAT's can only reach low- orbit satellites, and the most vital ones for the Navy are in high orbit. But once a new type of weapon is in the arsenal, performance is continuously improved.

It isn't at all clear whether a firm, verifiable accord is available with the Russians along the lines the arms- control agency proposes. But first there has to be a Washington decision. The lines are drawn so tightly that one scientist involved said, ''Negotiations with the Soviets, who worries about that? It's negotiations with the White House and the Pentagon that are the first concern.''

The moment is critical. If ASAT's aren't controlled, the world will be taking the first step to star wars. Not only will satellite killers add immensely to distrust and insecurity on both sides, the technique can be used in the first stages of space-based antiballistic missiles. Thus it will be possible to start violating the ABM treaty secretly, pretending that tests are only to perfect an ASAT system.

It should be obvious enough, from the terrible time the world is having trying to cut back on the senseless number of existing nuclear warheads, that once Pandora's space box is opened, the evils that escape won't soon be stuffed back under control.

Negotiations are needed soon. A serious offer, which would head off destabilization for both the U.S. and Moscow and provide mutual security, would go a long way toward reassuring Europeans and others that the U.S. does want to stop the arms race. A one-sided offer would reinforce critics.

The notion that the U.S. can achieve permanent superiority in arms technique is nonsense. That is what brought us the multiwarhead disaster of MIRV's. Even Henry Kissinger has now said, ''I wish I had thought through the implications of a MIRV'ed world.''

A remarkable interview that a Soviet physicist, Yevgeny Velikov, gave during a conference against nuclear war in Amsterdam last summer showed that the Russians are still capable of copying U.S mistakes. He said there had been extensive discussions of the space war idea in Moscow.

He considers it ''irrational'' for the Russians to follow if the U.S. goes ahead, but said there would be tremendous pressure to do so. ''So you have your own crazies,'' said the interviewer. ''Of course,'' said Mr. Velikov. ''They are a little different, but of course yes.''

Mr. Velikov contended that ''the arms race has been fueled mostly by the Americans.'' But he added, ''We, too, have made some terrible mistakes.''

This is the time when the non- crazies on both sides can block a new mistake. It won't last long.

moscow boat show

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.

COMMENTS

  1. PANDORA INTERNATIONAL

Althought the hulls are mostly the same, the International has a deeper, higher aspect ratio fin keel than the PANDORA MKI, a taller mast and shorter boom following the IOR fashion of the time. Draft: Twin keel - 3'/.92m. Keel/CB BU - 2'/.65m BD - 4.5'/1.37m.

  2. Review of Pandora 22 International

The Pandora 22 International is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.99 - 1.09 meter (3.25 - 3.55 ft) dependent on the load.
