Jack Daniel's Riverboat Captain 1.75L Bottle

IN HONOR OF RIVER BOATS AND THEIR CAPTAINS

In Mr. Jack’s day, the Cumberland River was a major thoroughfare for riverboats hauling cotton, tobacco and passengers, with Nashville being a major port-of-call. Keeping these boats amply supplied with Jack Daniel’s was the way to introduce travelers to the whiskey from Tennessee. And, the key to having a boat stock your product was to make friends with the captain. This 1.75L bottle, released in 1987, pays honor to the grand old river boats and the captains who commanded them.

Landscaping with River Rock: The Comprehensive Guide

Landscaping with River Rock

Known for its smooth and rounded texture, landscape river rock is available in many sizes, ranging from 3/8″ to 5″.

Each size group is able to perform its own unique set of functions as a means of meeting your landscaping needs and desires. The neutral and attractive color palette of these stones ensures that they will compliment any property.

Landscape river rock is extremely easy to work with, however many home and business owners are unsure of where to begin. Two of the most common questions we hear are:

  • Why should I use river rocks on my property and how can they best be utilized?
  • How much will this undertaking cost and how can I get the best value for my dollar?

This comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps of landscaping with river rock to ensure that the process is as smooth and seamless as possible.

Landscape River Rock Uses

River rocks have long been popular for use in landscaping applications as they can be used for a wide variety of projects. You might consider introducing river rocks to your landscape for purposes such as:

  • Paths and walkways – River rocks are an excellent choice for creating garden paths or front walkways in your property. The stones are comfortable to walk upon and the variety of colors and shapes will add visual interest to your land.
  • Play areas – Many people choose to use small river rocks in the areas surrounding their children’s play areas and equipment. A 2-3″ layer of these stones can be very shock absorbent, making them safe for falls. The rocks are also cleaner than other alternatives like sand or mulch and do not attract insects or other pests.
  • Edging – River rock of various sizes can act as a great edging material. The rocks will look beautiful as they create boundaries at the edge of flower beds, gardens, walkways or even around the sides of the property itself.
  • Gardens – Those with a green thumb will love the fact that river rocks promote healthy drainage while looking excellent in a garden setting. The stones do not decay or become infested with bugs, which makes them last longer and more cost-efficient in the long run.
  • Water features – River rocks can be utilized for the creation or enhancement of wet or dry water features. These stones are stunning when grouped around a fountain, in creating a waterfall or surrounding a pool or pond. They can also be used to construct dry river beds and streams.
  • Erosion prevention – For sloped yards the erosion of land in inclement weather can be an issue. River rocks make it possible to not only to improve the look of your landscape but also to preserve it by strategically placing the stones in a way that prevents erosion.

Landscape River Rock Sizing

Landscape river rocks are available for purchase in several sizes, each of which has their own set of functions:

  • 3/8″ river rock – These are the smallest sized river rocks that are available for purchase. The most common use for these small, smooth stones is in and around playgrounds and play equipment. As they don’t have jagged edges they are safe for children and they require far less maintenance than other alternatives.
  • 3/4″ river rock – These stones are ideal for the creation of paths and walkways as their size and smooth texture make them very comfortable to walk upon. The various colors of the stones will bring more interest to the overall look of your landscape and property.
  • 1″ river rock –  1″ river rock is perfect size for your landscape as it is still small enough for walkways but can also be used to construct riverbeds and features. It creates a variety of design options for you to choose from.
  • 1-3″ river rock – As river rocks continue to get larger in size they remain versatile. Stones that are 1-3″ are the perfect fit for creating a water feature that will become the centerpiece of your property. These rocks can be used to construct or enhance waterfalls, river beds and to surround ponds or other aspects of your landscape. This river rock is also the ideal size for mulch replacement.
  • 3-5″ river rock – This is the largest type of river rock that is available. The larger stones are excellent for attracting attention to any part of your landscape. Many property owners prefer to use the larger river rock for creating or adding to water features like water falls. 3″ – 5″ river rock can be used as a smaller veneer alternative when compared to the typical 6″-10″ options.

Landscape River Rock Cost

As you begin your landscaping project with river rocks , it’s important that you stay within your budget. In order to do this you need to understand the different factors that can influence the price of river rocks, including:

  • Size – The price that you will pay for your landscape river rock will depend on the size that you require. Generally speaking, smaller stones will cost more than larger stones as they must undergo additional screening to ensure it is the proper size.
  • Volume needed – When calculating how much you will spend you need to determine how much stone you will need to use. For obvious reasons, the higher the volume of stones that you require, the more money you will need to spend. Careful calculations can help you to avoid purchasing too much stone, however we recommend that you provide some cushion in your calculations. You would be better suited to have some extra than be half a yard short.
  • Supplier – The location from which you choose to buy your landscape river rock will play a role in its cost. Before rushing out to your local big box home improvement store, you should consider the fact that you will likely be charged more than the stone is worth. To ensure that you get the best deal possible it’s always a good idea to visit a river rock supplier.

Virgin River Season 6: What We Know About Mel and Jack’s Return to Netflix

As the end of summer draws near and fall creeps ever closer, we turn our attention to the cozier things in life: scented candles, pumpkin spice lattes and, of course, Virgin River .

It’s been roughly nine months since fans last visited the iconic Netflix locale, and while there’s still quite a while to wait until Season 6, we do have some idea of what to expect when we’re eventually reunited with Mel, Jack and the rest of the crew.

That '90s Show Introduces Kelso's Daughter - and Offers Fresh Intel on His Relationship With Jackie

As you may recall, Virgin River ‘s first-ever Christmas episode — which doubled as the fifth season finale — introduced a number of surprising developments into the mix: Mel met her estranged biological father, Charmaine (finally!) gave birth to her twins, Doc enrolled in an experimental trial to save his eyesight, Jack surprised Mel with a puppy (named Pony!), exes Brie and Brady almost kissed under the mistletoe, Lizzie and Denny announced that they’re expecting a baby girl, Preacher received a warning about Wes’ body being discovered, the return of Cameron’s ex threatened his future with Muriel, and the audience learned that Brady’s new girlfriend Lark isn’t the sweetheart she pretends to be.

Read on for a full breakdown of everything we know about Virgin River Season 6 so far, from its long-awaited release date to its ever-growing cast, along with intel on a few key cliffhangers. When you’re done, drop a comment with your own hopes for Season 6 below.

When Does Virgin River Season 6 Premiere?

A release date for Season 6 has not yet been announced, but considering production doesn’t even begin until sometime this spring, we could be waiting until late 2024 — if not early 2025 — for more Virgin River .

Who Is Returning for Virgin River Season 6?

Unless announced at a later date, we have reason to expect all of Virgin River ‘s current series regulars back for Season 6: Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel, Martin Henderson as Jack, Colin Lawrence as Preacher, Annette O’Toole as Hope, Tim Matheson as Doc, Benjamin Hollingsworth as Brady, Sarah Dugdale as Lizzie, Zibby Allen as Brie, Marco Grazzini as Mike, Mark Ghanimé as Cameron Hayek, Kai Bradbury as Denny and Kandyse McClure as Kaia.

The usual rotation of recurring characters — Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), Joey (Jenny Cooper), Muriel (Teryl Rothery), etc. — will also likely make appearances throughout the season.

How Many Episodes Are in Virgin River Season 6?

Virgin River will “probably” be going back to its traditional 10-episode format for Season 6, as was the case in the show’s first three seasons. Netflix raised that episode count to 12 for Season 4, with Season 5 taking things a step further by debuting in two separate parts.

“I think we’re probably looking at a 10-episode season moving forward,” Smith tells our sister site Deadline , adding that more Christmas specials are unlikely. “It’s sort of been there, done that, and I feel like we did it in [such] a big way that I wouldn’t even know where to start.”

And here’s a bonus: one of those episodes will be directed by series star Martin Henderson — pictured here, in action!

Is There a Virgin River Season 6 Trailer?

Unfortunately, no — Netflix has yet to release any new footage from Virgin River Season 6. But we promise we’ll let you know when they do!

What Is Mel’s Father’s Secret?

No good conversation ever started with “I’ve got something important to tell you,” yet that’s exactly how Mel’s estranged father chose to end Virgin River ‘s first-ever Christmas episode (aka the Season 5 finale).

So, what’s this big revelation that Everett is about to share? The only thing Smith will tell us for now is that the news will affect Mel “personally,” which leaves us to theorize about his potential bombshell. Does he have a terminal illness? Could Mel have half-siblings she doesn’t know about? We’ll find out, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Is Virgin River Getting a Spinoff?

Yes! Netflix is currently developing a Virgin River prequel series that will focus on the relationship between Mel’s mother and estranged father, who fell in love (and conceived her) in the titular town. Younger versions of Sarah and Everett will reportedly be introduced via flashbacks in Season 6, prior to the launch of the spinoff.

Has Virgin River Been Renewed for Season 7?

Not officially, but given that Virgin River is still one of the most-streamed shows on Netflix with each new season, it’s fair to assume that this show will be around for years to come. So we just have to wait for the news — and what are Virgin River fans if not patient?

Ride-hailing platform Uber has been fined €290 million -- around $324 million at current exchanges rates -- by the Netherlands' privacy watchdog for breaching the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The penalty is related to transfers of personal data of drivers out of the European Union to the US, where Uber's main business is located. Uber's full year revenue for 2023 was around €34.5 billion — so the level of sanction is well below that maximum.

Caprock Chronicles: The Battle at Red River

Editor’s note: Jack Becker is the editor of the Caprock Chronicles and authors today’s essay. He can be reached at  [email protected] . This is the third of a series of articles that commemorate the Red River War, which occurred 150 years ago this year.

Angered by the white man’s wanton destruction of the buffalo by buffalo hunters, also known as hide men, the Cheyenne, Comanche, and Kiowa peoples left their reservation in Indian Territory and traveled on the South Plains in attempt to stave-off the hide men’s destruction of their main food source. The southern plains Indians had exclusive rights to hunt buffalo on the South Plains, according to the Treaty of Medicine Lodge (1867).

Consequently, in the spring of 1874, Comanche and Kiowa warriors attacked a camp of hide men near the abandon site of Adobe Walls in present day Hutchinson County. Although the battle was considered a victory for the hide hunters. The battle sent shock waves across the southwest and soon afterwards, the Army was ordered into the area to use any means necessary to force the Indians back on to their reservations.

Military leaders pick Col. Nelson Miles, an experienced Indian fighter for the job. He left Fort Dodge in the late summer, heading south west with 744 soldiers, 554 horses and between 65-100 wagons, and 125 “citizen employees” under his command. After stopping and Camp Supply, in present day Oklahoma, he continued his march toward the Llano Estacado where he expected to find the off-reservation Indians.

It is at this site the Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne chose to attack the soldiers who had been following them so aggressively. Miles reported that between 75 and 100 warriors attacked an advance party of scouts less than two miles from the main force he personally commanded. Miles organized his troops and quickly came to the scouts rescue.

The Indians fell slowly back to a better prepared position some distance to the southwest where between 400-600 warriors held a very strong defensive position. At this point a five hour long running battle ensued. Covering about 12 miles starting at the Griffin Hills, where first contact was made, over the dry river bed of the Prairie Dog Branch of the Red River, to the mouth of Tule Canyon. The battle took place in southern Armstrong and northern Briscoe Counties.

Miles could not make the Indians “give battle” like he had hoped. He had hoped that one quick decisive battle would end the Red River War, but that was not to be.  The warriors successfully fought a delaying action, which allowed their village of mostly women and children to escape. After burning their village, which included everything they could not carry, the Indians traveled up Tule Canyon, following the trail that lead them to the top of the Llano Estacado.

Miles’ command spent the night on the Red River planning to follow the Indians the next day onto the top of the Llano. Following the trail the soldiers found that the Indians split up into many smaller trails, scattering in almost every direction of the compass. It soon became obvious to all that further pursuit was unless.

Miles returned to the site on the Red River where they had spent the previous night. During the night he determined that his command was dangerously low on ammunition, food and other supplies. And a rest was necessary to replenish his men and horses.

Although the Battle on the Red River was not the success Miles wanted, after all the Indians had escaped, they had, however, lost most of their worldly possessions and possibly the lives of 25 Indians. But the battle sent a message to all the Indians who now lived freely on the Llano. The U.S. Military intended to make war to the fullest.

The next day Miles ordered Captain Wyllys Lyman to return to Camp Supply with several wagons for the badly needed supplies.

Virgin River Season 6: Everything we know so far

comment icon

Mel and Jack's relationship in Netflix's original Virgin River is no less than a rollercoaster ride, which began soon after Melinda Monroe or Mel (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) moved to the small town named Virgin River after losing her husband and recovering from past traumatic experiences.

However, her arrival in the town was not so good. Being a nurse practitioner from Los Angeles, Mel was assigned to work with the town's local doctor, Doc Mullins, who didn't seem to be happy about working with Melinda Monroe. Mel then crosses paths with Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) and as they get closer, their lives get complicated.

Virgin River currently has five seasons, and the sixth was greenlit in 2023. Fans have been waiting to watch more of the small-town romance, and when asked if Virgin River season 6 will arrive in 2025, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith assured that won't happen while speaking to Glamour .

This is exciting news because it was believed that the next installment would hit Netflix in 2025, but now it looks like we can enjoy the rural love saga in season 6 in late 2024.

When will Virgin River season 6 come out on Netflix?

Lizzie and Denny (Image Source: Netflix)

Though Virgin River season six was greenlit last year, the series has faced major delays due to the writer's strike. The show revolves around the relationship of Mel and Jack, along with other supporting characters in the small town.

The series received a commendation for its comforting storyline and how Mel and Jack always chose each other at the end, despite facing significant challenges in their relationship.

In the same interview, Patrick Sean Smith also shared that the upcoming season does not have an exact release date yet and said:

"I don’t know. We don’t have an exact date yet, but I know that everybody is working towards trying to get us back in front of the cameras as quickly as possible. But as to when that is next year, I don’t know yet."

But if you think that the Netflix series will take another year to come out, then know that Smith is "going to do [his] darnedest to make sure that doesn't happen" . Despite facing delays, the drama series has ensured a smooth run of its five seasons, and we're expecting the upcoming season to arrive sometime in December 2024.

What is the plot of Virgin River season 6?

Virgin River season 6 will focus on Mel and Jack's parenthood (Image Source: Netflix)

Though Virgin River season 5 ended with a happy moment between Mel and Jack, it also included major cliffhangers and shocking revelations. Fans and viewers saw Mel finally confronting her biological father and also helping Charmine in giving birth to her twin boys.

The finale of season 5 also featured Preacher in a tough situation as he faces legal troubles following the discovery of Wes's body. Additionally, Lizzie announced her pregnancy which might lead her to tie the knot with Denny.

The showrunner also spoke with Deadline and stated, "Their [Mel and Jack's] pursuit of parenthood will play prominently in Season 6." Smith also confirmed in another interview with TV Line , that viewers will now see Doc and Hope in good health conditions compared to their issues featured in the fifth season.

Hope will be seen gathering new opportunities in her life after she navigates through significant challenges due to the distressing brain injury she sustained from a car accident.

How many episodes will Virgin River season 6 have?

Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel (Image Source: Netflix)

In the same 2023 interview with Deadline , showrunner Patrick Sean Smith said that the team is "probably looking at a 10-episode season moving forward" and does not plan to end the romance drama until all stories are covered and the characters' arcs are fully resolved.

The titles of the ten episodes have not been disclosed, but we know that season 6 will undeniably captivate fans with a fresh narrative while solving each cliffhanger left in season 5's finale.

Who are the cast members of Virgin River season 6?

A still from Virgin River (Image Source: Netflix)

Since the series will continue from where it left off and bring some new stories as well, the main cast members including Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel), Martin Henderson (Jack), Tim Matheson (Doc), Annette O'Toole (Hope), Sarah Dugdale (Lizzie), Kai Bradbury (Denny), Kandyse McClure (Kaia), and many others are expected to return.

Till then, you can watch Virgin River seasons 1-5 on Netflix.

The beer hall of fame: here are the top ten american ipa beers.

A selection of American craft IPAs

India Pale Ale (IPA) is one of America's most popular beer styles. It is known for its strong hop flavor and higher alcohol content. Below is a listing of the ten most medaled American IPAs in the United States, along with the five most important competitions where they have medaled, their awards, the Brewery that makes them, and a brief tasting note.

The origins of IPA are steeped in history, dating back to the late 18th century during the British colonial period. Breweries crafted this unique beer to withstand the arduous sea voyage from England to India. They fortified it with extra hops, a natural preservative, and increased the alcohol content to ensure it remained unspoiled during the journey. This historical context adds a rich layer of heritage to your beer experience.

The resulting beer was more bitter and robust than other ales. The style became very popular among British troops in India and back home in England, eventually spreading worldwide.

American craft beer brew masters, known for their creativity and innovation, were particularly drawn to the IPA-style beers. They took this classic style and pushed its boundaries, experimenting with diverse and innovative styles. Their dedication to pushing the envelope and creating a range of extra-hopped and extra-strong IPA beers is truly inspiring.

Since its inception, IPA has evolved into several substyles, including:

American IPA : Known for its stronger hop character and typically higher alcohol content.

Double/Imperial IPA : An even more intense version with more hops and a higher ABV.

New England IPA : Known for its hazy appearance and juicy, fruity hop flavors.

Where is ‘hoffman family gold’ filmed, what other locations has the hoffman crew mined in, what is ‘hoffman family gold’ about, who is in ‘hoffman family gold’.

Hoffman Family Gold , the latest spinoff from Discovery’s hit series Gold Rush , brings viewers back into the wild world of gold mining with a familiar face leading the charge. Todd Hoffman , the dreamer who kick-started the mining craze, is back - this time with his father, Jack Hoffman , and his son, Hunter Hoffman , for one final shot at striking it rich. The Hoffmans have ventured deep into the rugged heart of Alaska, where they’re battling everything from brutal weather to logistical nightmares, all in the name of gold. It’s remote, it’s treacherous, and it’s exactly where fortune seekers like the Hoffmans thrive.

Alaska’s untamed wilderness is practically another character in Hoffman Family Gold , making life difficult for the crew at every turn. From unpredictable storms to relentless cold, this isolated spot tests the Hoffmans as they try to rescue a failing mine. The pressure is on, and with a rookie crew and battered equipment, it’s a race against time before winter shuts everything down. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about the Hoffmans, it’s that they don’t back down easily. This wild ride through Alaska’s goldfields is about more than just striking it rich - it’s about family, legacy, and the pursuit of a dream.

Without further ado, check out where the Hoffman Family Gold is filmed.

Hoffman Family Gold (2022)

Hoffman Family Gold is primarily filmed in Alaska, about 85 miles northwest of Nome . To reach the site, miners must navigate a road that’s more like a rough trail. The journey involves crossing two mountain ranges and takes approximately three hours . But that’s just the beginning. Not only do miners have to endure the challenging journey , but they also need to transport their heavy-duty equipment to remote mining locations.

As one of the United States’ most significant mining regions, Alaska’s terrain plays a crucial role in the production of minerals like gold, silver, zinc, lead, and coal. Famous for its gold mines dating back to the 1860s, Alaska features rugged landscapes that closely resemble the conditions in northern Canada, particularly the Northwest Territories. Situated deep in the Alaskan wilderness, the area is only about 200 miles from the Russian border and close to Siberia. Given the isolation, both the gold mining crew and the filming crew need to be resourceful. If any equipment breaks down, they have to improvise on the spot rather than wait for help.

Over the years, the Hoffman crew has mined all over the region, especially in Gold Rush . Below are some of the mines the crew have left their mark in:

Jim Nail Placer Mine (Porcupine Creek)

Tucked away in the Chilkat Valley, Porcupine Creek is a tributary of the Klehini River in the Skagway subdistrict of Alaska’s Juneau mining district. This spot is no ordinary creek - certain patches of gravel here are said to contain an impressive 0.0106 or more ounces of gold per cubic yard.

Quartz Creek Mine

Quartz Creek Mine is nestled in the Klondike, Yukon, near Toronto Creek, Canada. After losing their Porcupine Creek claim to “Dakota” Fred, the Hoffman Crew set their sights on this location, hoping it would lead them to gold riches.

Indian River Mine

The Indian River Claim spans multiple areas along the Indian River, with one claim just 2 miles from Quartz Creek. Another claim is 35 miles away, near Scribner Creek, separated by the towering 2000-foot Quartz Hill. And if that’s not enough, there’s another claim 6 miles further down the road, located 15 miles west of its partner claim.

Q.O.D. Mine

The Q.O.D. Claim is nestled along Maple Creek’s paleochannel, near its intersection with Q.O.D. Creek. It’s a short 15-mile hop from the Maple Creek Claim and just 1.5 miles inland from the Potaro River. Previously owned by Ed Hopkinson , this prime piece of land was sold to Tony MacDeCee . The nearest town is Mahdia, and the crew made their base at their jungle hideaway, 316 Mining.

McKinnon Creek Mine

The McKinnon Creek Claim covers 350 acres along McKinnon Creek, stretching 1.5 miles in length, and sits about 35 miles south of Dawson City. This spot lies 10 miles west of Scribner Creek.

The Hoffman crew didn’t just stick to the frozen north - they ventured as far as the jungles of Guyana in their hunt for gold , even landing themselves in some seriously dangerous situations. In one interview, Todd revealed a hair-raising story: after cashing out a hefty haul of gold, he found himself in a high-speed car chase . With two backpacks stuffed with cash, Todd was practically a walking target and armed men were hot on his trail, ready to snatch it all. Thankfully, Todd and his driver managed to make a narrow escape, but the ordeal understandably left him spooked and shaken. Though the cameras didn’t capture the chaos, it’s a chilling reminder of the real risks that gold miners face in the pursuit of fortune.

Most recently, Hoffman Family Gold returned for its highly anticipated third season on June 14, 2024. Check out the official synopsis for Season 3 below:

"As three generations of Todd Hoffman’s family arrive in Alaska to mine the most promising claim they’ve ever held, tensions rise when Todd’s father, Jack, announces his final season. With winter fast approaching, the Hoffman crew must devise a plan to triple their output and mine 3,000 ounces before the ground freezes over, putting their legacy and livelihood on the line."

In Season 3, the Hoffman crew face their biggest challenges as they go head-to-head with an Alaskan tundra to strike a gold jackpot worth five million dollars. But before they could get their hands on all this fortune, they’d have to melt permafrost, devise engineering schemes, and tend to their wash plans. Mother Nature isn’t so motherly to the crew. It’s going to take a miracle for the crew to get through the season. The third season also marks Jack’s final run before he officially calls it quits . While things are pretty bittersweet, Todd and Jack are determined to make every second count.

Todd just couldn’t stay away from gold mining for long. As one of the original trailblazers of the gold rush craze, Todd initially decided to pack up his gear and walk away from the risky business, choosing to focus on his family instead. But when whispers of a golden opportunity reached him, he couldn’t resist the pull. After four years away from the game, Todd is making a bold return to Alaska, determined to give it one last shot. This time, he’s not going it alone - he’s brought along his father, Jack, his son, Hunter, and crew members Jim Thurber , Andy Spinks , and Randy Hubler . Together, they’re ready to take on new risks and see if this mine can deliver the fortune they’ve been chasing.

However, it’s not going to be easy. Alaska’s brutal weather, inexperienced crews, and rundown equipment are all working against them. Todd knows he’s rolling the dice, but if he can pull off this rescue mission, he’ll secure mining rights for the next decade and possibly cement a family legacy. The clock is ticking though - he’s got just seven weeks before winter swoops in and shuts everything down.

Jack, Todd’s father, has his own history with Alaska’s treacherous terrain. A quarter century ago, he took a chance on mining and nearly lost everything, including everything he had in his life. His dream of striking it rich crumbled, and the disappointment of failing his family haunted him. But in 2010, Jack had a second shot at chasing his dream thanks to his son. Since then, he’s witnessed the Hoffman crew haul in over 6,000 ounces of gold. At 72 years old, Jack spends more time in the gold room than in the field, but his work ethic doesn’t fade. Besides Jack, Todd’s son, Hunter, steps in as the third generation of his family to join the gold mining adventure. Alongside Parker Schnabel , best known for his spin-off Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail , Hunter is one of the younger faces on the show. However, Parker’s got a bit of a head start - about five years older and far more seasoned in the Gold Rush game, having been deeply involved from the start.

Residents fight golf courses in Jonathan Dickinson State Park

Portrait of Jack Lemnus

Editor's note: On Friday, after The Flagler of Stuart decided not to host the DEP public meeting that was scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday, citing "safety concerns," DEP postponed all of the meetings across the state and said it is looking for larger venues "due to the overwhelming interest." Stay tuned for a new date, time and place.

Martin County leaders, residents and environmentalists are scrambling to halt the development of Jonathan Dickinson State Park, which would include clearing huge swaths of native scrub habitat to build three golf courses .

Environmental nonprofits, including Audubon of Martin County and the Florida Wildlife Federation , have gathered thousands of petition signatures and announced plans to pack a public meeting about the issue in Stuart Tuesday.

The Protect Jonathan Dickinson State Park Facebook Group mobilized over 100 people who demonstrated at the park Wednesday, with dozens of cars clogging the roads trying to attend. The group has gained over 25,000 followers since it was created Monday by Jessica Namath, a former Tequesta Environmental Advisory Committee member.

“It’s infuriatingly egregious of them to think that we would be OK with this,” Namath told TCPalm Thursday. “We have enough golf courses already polluting our water with waste, and this would just be one more in a critical habitat.”

Martin County leaders oppose state park golf course

Florida Rep. John Snyder of Stuart, his father Sheriff William Snyder and Martin County Commissioner Blake Capps, who was elected Tuesday to represent Hobe Sound, have publicly opposed the proposal. All are Republicans.

The park "is not open for development," John Snyder said in a news release. "For many of us, Jonathan Dickinson is more than just land; it’s woven into the fabric of our community, our history and our everyday lives."

He called the park a "cherished sanctuary" and said protecting it "is vital to preserving the natural and cultural heritage that defines Palm Beach and Martin counties." He said development plans have "understandably struck a nerve with our community" and he urged residents to "keep raising your voices and standing firm" to support the park.

"I want you to know that I hear you, and I’m with you on this," Snyder said. "I won’t stand by while its future is put at risk."

The sheriff said, "It bodes badly for our county" and will increase crime, car crashes, calls for service and displaced wildlife. "We have enough golf courses. We don't have enough open spaces and enough protected uplands.”

Capps agreed, saying, "I think it’s an absolutely terrible idea. I look forward to strongly opposing this.”

DeSantis' Great Outdoors Initiative

Communities near the eight state parks slated for recreational development — such as golf courses, disc golf courses and pickleball courts — were given a week's notice, and all the public meetings will be on the same day.

“They’re being really stealthy about this,” said James Howe, conservation chair of Audubon of Martin County. “The room for the (Stuart) meeting only holds 150 people, but we’re going to show up. The crowd is going to bring gridlock to Stuart.”

The Department of Environmental Protection will unveil the plan at The Flagler of Stuart River Room at 201 S.W., Flagler Ave.

DEP ARC: Here are the 7 people who will decide on the golf courses

Things to know: 10 facts about Jonathan Dickinson State Park

This isn't the first time land in Jonathan Dickinson has been eyed for a golf course. In 2011, a bill would have allowed golfer and golf-course designer Jack Nicklaus to build courses in state parks as part of then-Gov. Rick Scott’s initiative to boost tourism. Three years of fierce opposition by conservationists seemed to have killed the plan.

Friends of the Everglades Executive Director Eve Samples was confident about quashing this part of Gov. Ron DeSantis' “Great Outdoors Initiative,” which DEP released Wednesday after someone leaked the documents.

“I’m extremely hopeful we’ll defeat these sneaky proposals. We did it a decade ago, and we’ll do it again,” she said. “The buck stops with the governor. FDEP is an arm of our executive branch, and if Gov. DeSantis stands for clean water , he can — and should — have stopped this.”

Golf courses in state parks damage habitat

The plan calls for two 18-hole golf courses and one nine-hole golf course over 1,000 acres of protected scrub land. To accommodate for the new golf courses, the state plans to relocate existing park amenities and tear down the Hobe Mountain boardwalk and observation tower, which is deemed unsafe, according to state officials.

Environmentalists point to the development's potential damage to natural waterways, not only by depleting the freshwater supply to maintain the courses, but also by polluting the Loxahatchee River with fertilizer and pesticide runoff.

“Runoff from the proposed golf courses would likely enter the Indian River Lagoon with potential impacts to our waterways and crucial species, including seagrasses and oysters, endangering the fragile coastal ecosystems we are fighting to protect,” the Florida Oceanographic Society wrote in a statement released Thursday.

The park’s scrub land is also crucial habitat for endemic and endangered species such as the Florida scrub jay and the gopher tortoise, said Howe, who has led scrub jay educational walks through the park for years. He fears the loss of habitat would destabilize the ecosystem.

“If the governor’s office thought people would say, 'Oh, let’s get rid of this stupid land that’s just sitting there and get some golf courses in here, people are going to love this,' it’s pretty clear that’s not the case,” Howe said.

Sheriff William Snyder opposes state park golf course

Snyder said he is “vehemently opposed” to the plan.

“I have to look at everything, first of all, as a law enforcement issue, and if the question was, 'Would a golf course or two golf courses in Jonathan Dickinson State Park present a public safety challenge or issue?' I would say unequivocally, yes,” he told TCPalm Thursday. “Golf courses in and of themselves are not a magnet for crime, but people coming into our county to golf creates an environment that could exacerbate our calls for service.”

As a longtime resident, the sheriff said he also worries about the environment and overdevelopment.

The park has felt like a “bulwark, kind of a stopgap between the urbanization that we see in the counties to the south and to our quieter, less crime-affected community," he said. "I think as we diminish that, it feels to me that the symbol of our way of life — Jonathan Dickinson State Park — pushing back against encroaching urbanization, will be lost.”

Snyder said when he learned of the project, he noted the list of endangered species that live in the park.

“We are constantly responding to calls for service because of wild animals that have been pushed out of their natural habitat,” he said. “If they do this in Jonathan Dickinson State Park, we will see animals displaced and crashes occurring along U.S. 1, no doubt, as these animals are looking for a place to go live.”

DEP had not responded to TCPalm’s phone calls and emails as of Thursday afternoon. The agency defended the proposal in a news release Monday, highlighting the state’s previous land conservation efforts.

“Today’s announcement reinforces the DeSantis Administration’s record support for conserving our natural landscapes and commitment to ensuring every Floridian can visit and recreate at Florida’s state parks,” the release states.
